Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - MIRACLE: Cam Ward is FINE and SURGERY is NOT Required & Tennessee Titans TERRIBLE First Interviews
Episode Date: January 5, 2026The Tennessee Titans whole world has hung in the balance the last 24 hours as Cam Ward's injury clouded any optimism about the future, but we got great news on Monday indicating Ward will not require ...surgery and should be fully healthy for the entire offseason. While setbacks are always possible, this is a best case scenario for Ward considering a lot of the reporting around the injury on Sunday. However, now that we are passed the Ward news, the biggest thing on the to-do list is to hire a new head coach and the Titans got started with interview requests on Monday. The only problem is, the list looks terrible with a bunch of poor candidates and Borgonzi Buddies. While it would be easy to freak out, there are a few key things to consider that will keep you calm like scouting prospective defensive coordinators and realizing most of the proper candidates are unavailable right now. The Tennessee Titans requested a bunch of interviews with potential head coaches on Monday,
but the best news of the day was that Cam Ward is going to be just fine.
I'm going to give you the latest on today's edition of Locked on Titans.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network,
your team every day.
Welcome
to the Locked on Titans podcast
I am your host
Tyler Rowland Titans fans
today's edition
of the Locked on Titans podcast
is going to be all about
the massive Monday of news
for the Tennessee Titans
I'm going to update you on
Cam Ward's injury and boy
did we get good news
on that front
but also the Tennessee Titans
have begun their head coaching search
and they started putting out
some interview requests
I like some of the names
I do not like
Some of the names will go over everyone that the Tennessee Titans have reached out to so far.
Before we dive in, do want to thank you for making the Locked on Titans podcast.
Your first listen each and every day.

It's your team every day here on the Locked on Titans podcast.
Speaking of Every Day, shout out to my everydayers out there.
Tune in Monday through Friday.
Couldn't do it without you guys.
If you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one.
This head coaching search is about to take off like a rock.
Cam Ward's updates, free agency, the draft, all right around the corner. You're not going to be more up to date, more informed and more entertained than you would be right here with me on Locked on Titans. But with that being said, again, the biggest, best news of the day, the thing that mattered the most was the injury status, the health status of Cam Ward, and according to national reporters like Ian Rappaport, Adam Schepter, according to local reporters, according to Cam Ward, according to Cam,
Ward himself right now the recommendation is for him not to have surgery it does not look
like surgery will be necessary and it was even called the best case scenario for
Cam Ward and for the Tennessee Titans right now the way that it looks Cam Ward is
not going to have to have surgery he just needs to rest and let his body naturally
recover right now the timeline that's being stated is three to six weeks
weeks of rest for Cam Ward, and he should be just fine. Outside of all of the ramifications
that come along with a Cam Ward injury that we've talked about, that we will talk about,
more importantly than anything else, I'm a fan of this football team and I want my
quarterback to be healthy. I don't care what the reasons are. I don't care about all the
contacts and all. I want my young quarterback to be healthy. I don't care if, oh, even if he did
have surgery, he would have been back by, no.
I want my young quarterback to be healthy.
Point blank, period.
So the fact that we got this news as quick as we got it,
I wasn't certain how long it would take before we'd get a serious update.
But Cam Ward wasn't in a sling doing his press conferences exit interview on Monday.
That's a great sign.
So, look, that in itself is a great thing.
And then you add in all the context.
Then we add in all the other little details and the environmental factors
of brand new head coach, brand new offense to learn
going to have brand new teammates in the draft and in free agency
going to need to build chemistry with them,
be on the same page with them, work with them.
It's not like the only time that teammates work together
is in these organized team activities that the Titans have in the all season.
I did a joke in the update I did, the small video I did,
about going to Bora Bora, but I mean, we hear about it all the time.
They go, you know, these tropical locations as a team, and they throw and they get on the same page
and they run their routes and they talk about timing and they talk about route depth
and all these little things that can give the Tennessee Titans a jump start
towards hopefully being more competitive next year.
Cam Ward has to be healthy to be able to do most of those things.
And also again, I mentioned new offense, new head coach, all that,
but for head coaching candidates
that could potentially pick
the Tennessee Titans
don't they want to know
that Cam Ward's injury is not that bad
and it's quote unquote
best case scenario
wouldn't you want future head coaching candidates
who may take that into consideration
wouldn't you want them to know that
so everything about this
is again best case scenario
great news
deep sigh of relief
deep breath
I was so worried
you were worried too don't lie
Don't lie. You were worried too because that is
Cam Ward having a serious injury
there and having to have surgery. That is like the
only thing that could derail this
Tennessee Titans all season from being
setting them up to have a
perfect run into being more competitive.
Now let's say this.
We do have to be honest.
All of the reports
are that Cam Ward doesn't need surgery.
But Cam Ward himself said
that's not what it's looking like right now.
Cam Ward left the door
open a little bit with his comments and his press conference to say like, you know,
right now, it doesn't look like that's needed.
You know, like that's not what's being recommended, all that.
But there is the possibility.
It is still a possibility that three to six weeks from now, they look at it and they're like,
this isn't getting better.
It's not healing.
It's not good.
We got to do surgery.
And then, you know, we would be right back into doomsday disaster prep.
So it's good news.
This is again the best case scenario for Cam Ward.
But that does not mean that we are completely out of the woods entirely.
Now, I'm going to choose, as you guys tell me to do all the time in the comments,
I'm going to choose to be optimistic here.
I'm going to choose to believe that the initial diagnosis that we got here,
the initial reports that we're getting here are correct.
Cam Ward's good to go.
It's going to heal all of that.
but, I mean, Anthony Richardson thought his would heal
and then had to have surgery.
Will Levis, you could say,
thought his would heal and didn't and then had to have surgery.
Now, we know why Will Levis had surgery
because he was pouting that the Titans went out and drafted Cam Ward
and he wasn't going to get a chance to be the starter.
We know that, but I'm just saying.
Now, Trevor Lawrence had surgery on an AC joint sprain
before this season now, Trevor Lawrence's was a non-throwing shoulder.
This is his throwing shoulder.
so that makes it much more of a concern
but again
realistically speaking
Cam Ward probably dodged a bullet here
he's probably going to be fine
he sounds like he's fine
he's even said
doesn't look like surgery is needed right now
Tennessee Titans medical staff
which I don't know if I trust them entirely
but they've even said not surgery
right now again the local
the national reports all say the same
so if you're a Tennessee Titans fan today
like me and you were waking up
scared to death, refresh in social media.
I need an update on Cam Ward.
This is literally the best update that we could possibly get.
This is the best update that we could possibly get
after seeing Cam Ward on the sideline in a sling
against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Hearing, it's grade 3.
And look, there are going to be some of you guys getting in the comments
or, you know, online or whatever talking about.
What grade is it?
Did we confirm grade 3, grade 4?
guys I tell you all the time I'm not a doctor I don't care about that because I don't know what any of that means you know I'm seeing grade three means that there were ligaments I gotta be honest with you in every picture that I've seen of an AC joint sprain it looks like the shoulder is snapped and disconnected like this top bone on the top of the shoulder every single AC joint sprain shows that disconnected from your shoulder and to me you
you have a broken shoulder like you have fractured your shoulder you have snapped your shoulder
if your bone is broken from the other bone but all of the pictures say it's torn ligaments
well that white bone connecting to the other white bones of the shoulder being snapped right there
that doesn't look like a ligament that looks like a bone so I'm not even going to pretend to act
like I have some medical degree and can tell you the difference in all the different grades of
But what I have seen is that a grade 3 AC joint sprain has a 50-50 shot to be surgery or to be rest and recovery.
And for Cam Ward to fall in the 50% rest and recovery bucket of that group, again, best case scenario, great news even if we're not completely out of the woods entirely.
Still the best possible news that we could get on this Monday.
Now, good news also for Titans fans is that the head coaching search is,
underway and there are requests being put out right now to candidates I'm
going to tell you who they are what the timeline of this decision is going to be
but also on the other hand some of the candidates that are getting interview
requests really have me concerned okay because I am not interested in them
as candidates whatsoever so let's go over all the coaching news do want to let you
know that today's episode is brought to you

Titans fans
let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast
we got an injury update on Cam Ward
great news for the Tennessee Titans
even if we aren't totally out of the woods
But now I want to talk about some of these interview requests that are going out to Tennessee Titans head coaching candidates
because we got a bunch of them on Monday and I got to be honest, not all of them have me very excited.
But before we get into that, do want to thank you for making Locked on Titans.
You're at first.
Listen, thank you for making the Locked On Podcast Network, the number one sports podcast network.
But again, we started Monday off with the name that we all expected.
And even if I hate the name, even if I don't want him to be hired, we knew Matt Nagy was going to.
to get an interview request. It was something that was confirmed locally,
something that we absolutely expected. He's the favorite to be the Tennessee Titans head coach
right now. Even though I hate saying that to you, again, the point is we knew no matter what
Matt Nagy was going to get an interview and we confirmed that interview request.
And although Matt Nagy's contract is going to be up with the Kansas City Chiefs,
it's not quite up yet, which means they still have to put in a formal request to the Chiefs
to interview Matt Nagy. But I want to throw this out.
out there. I am not high on Matt Nagy. I made an entire episode say no to Matt Nagy.
I am the anti-Mattaggy guy in the Tennessee Titans media ecosystem, period. I am the guy
who likes him the least. And I confirmed that over the weekend watching so many people
cape for Matt Nagy. Disgusting behavior in my opinion. But regardless, I think Matt Nagy
would be a terrible head coach. Terrible. He is not a leader of men. He cannot manage
games. However,
as a potential
offensive coordinator with a young
defensive coordinator as the head coach,
say the Titans go with a guy like Chris Shula,
a young defensive coordinator from the Los Angeles Rams.
Do we also want him to have a very young
offensive coordinator? That might be a risky move.
So Matt Nagy could be a guy
who is getting the first interview,
number one candidate, connection with
Mike Borganzi, blah, blah, but the reality
is the Titans could just want Matt
and Maggie to come over and be the offensive.
coordinator for a young defensive coordinator, so they have a former head coach and an experienced veteran to go on.
And I think Matt Nagy would be much better as just an offensive coordinator and play caller
than a head coach. Because I think the problems with Matt Nagy, while I didn't like his offense in Chicago,
the bigger problems I have with Matt Nagy are the leadership qualities,
which is what I value the most in the Tennessee Titans head coaching search this time.
I want somebody with experience.
So if Matt Nagy isn't going to be the head coach of the team
where I think he's terrible as a leader and as a manager of a in-game situation,
as just a pure offensive coordinator and play caller,
I'd be more open to that even if I'm not excited.
So keep that in mind as we go through these lists
that some of these guys, like we saw with Matt Lafleur and Mike Vrable,
some of these guys are being interviewed
either to a
get information out of them
how do you view the roster
what would you do with cam ward
who do you think would be the best fit for your coaching staff
how do you view our organization
other than simply information gathering
which happens with some of these interviews
they know they're not hiring this person
they're doing it to gain information
or like I just mentioned with Matt Lafleur
Matt Nagy or
it's a head coaching interview
that is actually an interview
for a potential coordinator position
under the head coach they do want to hide.
So keep that in mind.
As I tell you these names,
Vance Joseph,
defensive coordinator from the Denver Broncos
has been formally requested to interview
for the Tennessee Titans.
We'll talk about
the timing of that
and why that's allowed.
with the Broncos being in the playoffs here in just a moment.
Now again, when I said that I didn't like some of these names,
Vance Joseph is one of the guys that I am not interested in.
Again, the defense for the Broncos has been fantastic.
You could say that Vance Joseph, as a former head coach,
who was the head coach of Denver in 2017 and 2018,
Vance Joseph has former head coach experience.
schematically he has proven that he is a guru on a side of the football
his defenses in Denver the last couple of years have been incredible
he as you could say from those two things
earned an opportunity to get head coach interviews
but the last time he was a head coach
his defenses weren't even that good
they were good in yards
his first year as a head coach of the Denver Broncos
they were third in yards allowed, but 22nd and points.
26th in takeaways.
Like, they were a good rushing defense by yards, good passing defense by yards.
But they gave up a ton of points.
Couldn't stop anybody.
Like, he went 5 and 11, his first year with the Broncos,
6 and 10, his second year with the Broncos is a head coach.
I'm sorry.
But you cannot be somebody who doesn't like Kevin Stefansky,
who doesn't like Mike McCarthy,
but likes Vance Joseph.
I would take Matt Nagy over Vance Joseph.
What are we doing here?
This guy is not a head coach.
His defenses outside of Denver have been up and down.
If you take away the last two years of Denver,
you cannot make the argument whatsoever this dude deserves.
a head coaching position.
2023 in Denver as the defensive coordinator.
29th and yards, 27th and points.
The year before that in Arizona, 21 in yards, 31 in points.
Then in Arizona two years, he was 13 and 12 yards and points.
11 and 11 yards and points.
But then after that, 32nd in yards, 28th and points with Arizona in 2019.
22nd yards, 13th and points in 2018.
his last season in Denver that we talked about.
And then go to 2016 when he was the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.
29th in yards allowed, 18th and points allowed.
This guy's defenses haven't even been that good outside of his last two seasons in Denver.
He was a terrible head coach in Denver.
What are we doing here, man?
And the thing with Vance Joseph is,
he can't be the defensive coordinator for the Titans.
That's a lateral move.
The Titans can't just hire him to be the defensive coordinator when he's
already the defensive coordinator of the Broncos.
The Broncos get to say,
no, we're not letting you do that.
That's not a promotion.
I love when you guys say,
you know, Brian Flores is the defensive coordinator,
bring over Clint Kubiak as the offensive.
Guys, they have to be promoted to take them.
You can't just take them from other teams
and make them the same position that they are.
That's not how that works.
So, Vince Joseph, I saw that and, ooh, stinky.
What a terrible, terrible interview.
request, but hopefully he's got some good
insight on the defense. Steve Spagnola
is even worse.
What are we doing?
The only reason that Steve Spagnola
is getting an interview
is because Mike Borgonzi came from
Kansas City. But Steve Spagnola
should have a 0%
chance, a 0%
chance to be the head coach of the Tennessee
Titans. He's 66 years old.
66 years old.
He's already got two opportunities to be a head coach.
He was a head coach for the St. Louis Rams.
The year they went 1 in 15, 7 and 9, 2 and 14.
Then he went 1 in 3 as an interim head coach with the Giants in 2017.
This guy is a terrible head coach.
One of the worst head coach is in the last 25 years in the NFL.
What are we doing?
That has to be
Steve Spagnola is my buddy
I just want to make his resume look better
and hype him up
We need to get Steve Spagnola's take
on what to do with this defense
schematically what he would do with the roster
But if Steve Spagnola advances
Anywhere past the virtual interviews
My confidence of Mike Borgonzi is going to be shooking
If he even progresses
even if he doesn't get a job.
I'm still going to be concerned about Mike Borgonzi
because Steve Spagnola
is one of the worst head coaching candidates
you could even possibly fathom
in the NFL right now.
Lou Anarumo, even worse.
His defense in Cincinnati
crumbled, was massively overrated.
Goes to the Colts, their defense, not good.
Lou Anirumo, what are we doing here?
Like, can you at least be good on your side
the ball. You don't have any head coaching experience to point off and talk about
Lou Amarumo. And again, I don't want somebody who is no experience and going to be 60.
At least Mike McCoy or Mike McCarthy has won a Super Bowl. Yeah, he's 62 years old, but he's
won a Super Bowl. Lou Anerumo has never been a head coach before in his life and he's going to be
Steve Spacknola is 66 years old and has been one of the worst head coaches in NFL history.
Like, starting off the morning of Matt Nagy, Vance Joseph, Steve Spagnola, and Lou Anerumo.
I'm like, just find me at the bottom of the Cumberland, man.
What are we doing?
But here's the good news.
More head coach requests came in in the afternoon and there are a lot better names and we'll talk about them now.
Do want to let you know that today's episode is brought to you by Fandall.

Titans fans! Let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about an update on Cam Ward's injury and the good news we got there.
We talked about the first couple of interview requests we got for the Tennessee Titans
concerning to say the least.
But now I want to talk about some of the interview requests that came through later in the day
that I am more optimistic on.
Before I get into it, thank you for making Locked on Titans your first list.
Thank you for making the Lockdown Podcast Network, the number one sports podcast network.
But Mike McCarthy, we had that confirmed all along.
Mike McCarthy will get an interview with the Tennessee Titans.
Fantastic news.
As you guys know, Mike McCarthy, my favorite option up until Monday morning.
Now my number two option, Mike McCarthy is my number two.
I would be absolutely over the moon if the Tennessee Titans hired Mike McCarthy.
As I've explained,
will set a culture and be a professional leader
that this team desperately needs
after the Brian Callahan disaster.
They desperately need just a professional NFL football coach
to raise the level and raise the standard in Tennessee.
McCarthy does that.
Super Bowl winning coach
who has success, a winning record,
Super Bowl on his ledger,
with Dallas even,
multiple playoff appearances,
12 win seasons. This guy has had top five offenses
throughout his career. He is good working with quarterbacks.
He got MVP stuff out of Aaron Rogers.
Great play out of Dak Prescott.
Mike McCarthy checks so many boxes.
So very happy to hear officially
that Mike McCarthy would be requested by the Tennessee Titans.
Cliff Kingsbury.
Cliff Kingsbury, who I wasn't certain if the Titans
would take a look.
But my guy, Cortland Griffin, who does some work for the Titans, covers the Titans a little bit,
put out there that Cliff Kingsbury will, in fact, be requested for an interview by the Tennessee Titans.
Now, all of these are requests to interview.
In theory, some of these guys could turn down those requests.
But nonetheless, Cliff Kingsbury is a guy who I think is a massively over or underrated candidate in this coaching cycle.
There are leadership questions.
Is he capable of being a leader?
for an NFL program.
That's one of the things that he needed to improve on
from his first head coaching opportunity in Arizona.
I recognize that as a risk entirely
when we're doing the scouting report for these coaches.
But think about the stuff that Clint Kingsbury does do well.
He is a guru on the offensive side of the ball.
He is great at developing quarterbacks.
He would fit very nicely with what Cam Ward wants to do
and what Cam Ward is as a player.
I think if you want the best for Cam Ward,
If you want to get the absolute maximization of Cam Ward,
Cliff Kingsbury is the guy that you do it with.
Now, will he hire a good defensive coordinator?
Will he be ready to be a leader?
It sounds like he was buttoned heads with the general manager in Washington.
Is that going to happen in Tennessee?
Does he feel comfortable with Mike Morgonzi?
All those different things.
But a young, energetic, experienced, offense,
quarterback-centric head coach?
I mean, that sounds perfect.
What if the Titans brought in Cliff Kingsbury
and just kept DeNard Wilson and Bones Fossil?
I would be over the moon with that.
Cliff Kingsbury is a great option.
And at minimum, at minimum, at minimum.
You need to pick Cliff Kingsbury's brain
and figure out what he would do with Cam Ward,
what scheme is best for Cam Ward,
how would you surround Cam Ward with weapons.
What do you think his strengths and weaknesses are?
At minimum, you have to ask Cliff Kingsbury
all of those questions about offense
because even if you don't want him as your head coach,
that is a guy who knows offensive football
and is going to be able to give you some serious answers.
But let me just throw this out there.
Like I mentioned earlier in the show,
the Titans could be interviewing some of these people
for potential coordinator positions.
And there's, like I just said,
there's word out there that Cliff Kingsbury
may want to part ways with Washington
because of his differences in opinion
with the front office and general manager Adam Peters.
If Cliff Kingsbury leaves Washington as an offensive coordinator
and is just on the open market
and wants to continue being an offensive coordinator,
if the Titans could pair him with one of these defensive guys,
what a home run situation.
So very happy to hear that Cliff Kingsbury
is going to get an interview request from the Titans.
I think he's one of the most underrated candidates
because he checks so many boxes of what I'm looking for.
for the Titans.
We also heard that the Tennessee Titans
are going to be interviewing Raheem Morris.
Now, Rahim Morris was just fired by the Atlanta Falcons.
So, you know, how would you feel about that?
This would be his third opportunity as a head coach in the NFL
and often you don't get a third opportunity
to be a head coach in the NFL, and quite frankly,
the Atlanta Falcons have so much talent on their roster,
so much talent on their roster that it's a disaster
that they weren't able to make the playoffs the last couple of years.
But again, let me remind you, let me remind you,
the Titans could be interviewing Raheem Morris
for a defensive coordinator position.
If they were to hire a young defensive guy like Chris Shula from the Los Angeles Rams
Shula has worked with Rahim Morris directly before under Rahim Morris.
They're good friends. They have a good relationship.
What if the Tennessee Titans hire Chris Shula?
And then Chris Shula hires his friend Rahim Morris to be his defensive coordinator.
Now that, that would be a home run.
Imagine if Chris Shula was hired as the Tennessee Titans head coach.
he brought in Rahim Morris as the defensive coordinator
he brought in Nate Shelhoss
who's one of the hottest young candidates in the NFL
as an offensive coordinator
what a coaching staff
what a trio to start with
like I think that would be
absolutely fantastic
so I would hate Rahim Morris as the head coach
but I would love
Rahim Morris as a defensive coordinator
Now, the final name, the final name, Kevin Stafansky, my number one candidate, according to Pete Schrager from ESPN,
will get a request to interview with the Tennessee Titans.
He's also going to interview with the Giants and the Falcons.
Kevin Stafansky is the number one head coaching candidate on the market in the NFL right now,
not just for the Titans, for the NFL period.
Kevin Stefansky was fired and immediately became the most sought after head coaching candidate in the NFL.
If right now you're telling yourself, why?
Why would Kevin Stefansky, why would the Giants of Falcons and Titans be interested?
I'm sorry, but you don't know football.
That's what you're finding out.
You've got to look yourself in the mirror and say,
why is this guy immediately becoming the number one candidate in the NFL
and all these teams want to interview him?
every team is going to interview Kevin Stefansky
but you think he sucks at coaching football
you might have to
might have to reevaluate some things folks
I'm just telling you
I'm just trying to be brutally honest with you
Uncle Ty being honest
if you think Kevin Stefansky is a terrible
head coaching choice
if you don't like him and you like other people
and you want to say to me
Tyler I don't think that Kevin Stefansky
is terrible but I like
A, B and C better
I can respect that
but you people that get in my comments and tell me
Browns fans hate
I'm going to tell you a quote from the first
Men in Black movie
Tommy Lee Jones said it best
a person
is smart
people are dumb
fans are dumb
have you ever been on Facebook
and looked at the Titans' pages
like
it's insane
what some people believe
and their opinion I mean I had a Browns fan
arguing with me, that Kevin Stefanski going for two against the Titans at the end was dumb.
They were down by two.
They had to.
And you always go for it when you're down by 14, late in a game.
You go for two on your first touchdown and hopefully your second touchdown.
Remember when the Titans came back and beat the Dolphins with Will Levis?
They went for two both times.
And they got it once.
And it allowed them to win.
And if you get it at least one out of the two times, you're still going to be tied.
So I have Browns fans arguing with me that going for two was stupid
when that is one of the clearest analytical things
that everyone agrees on that you should do
and is clearly the right move.
And not only that, but Quinn Sean Junkins forgot the play.
He was supposed to pitch it back and it was wide open.
There was a guy wide open the end zone who was going to catch it
and the Titans were going to lose or go to overtime with the Browns.
He was wide open.
Quinn Sean Jutkins, his running back literally forgot to toss the ball backwards.
had a brain fart in the middle of the play and forgot.
And I have people telling me that
that's one of the main reasons
Kevin Stefansky is a bad coach.
Do you see why I don't respect the opinion
of other fan bases?
Like,
a person is smart.
People are dumb.
So, you know,
and to be honest, let's say what it is.
A lot of Titans fans were saying
that Mike Vrable was a bad hire,
a bad coach, whatever.
Fans don't know crap, man.
If fans knew about football,
they would be in charge.
That's just the truth.
And a fan, a single fan, an individual person
can be very smart, very informed, and know what they're talking about.
But the Cleveland Browns fans hate Kevin stuff.
Okay, well, Bengals, Steelers, and Ravens fans are happy that he's gone.
So if you want to go all fan opinion, let's, how about that fan opinion get introduced?
But either way, that's the eight names that we know right now.
I'm going to keep you up to date on all of them.
That's going to do it for me today, folks, as always.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this.
This was Locked on Titans.
