Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to a Locked on Titans postcast. I am your host, Tyler Rowland. Titans fans, I am going to give you guys my instant reactions, my raw emotions, my quick thoughts after the Titans lose to the New England Patriots 36-19. The game was closer than the score may lead on, but the Titans once again beat themselves. So we're going to dive into my quick reaction in a Locked On Titans postcast.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Let's get it. You are Locked On Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. The Tennessee Titans are now on a losing streak. That's two losses in a row for the Titans after they lose to the Patriots in week 12. Again, 36-19. The Patriots had some garbage time scores that made it look less competitive than it actually was but just gonna dive into my quick reactions here my my instant takeaways from the game do want to thank you guys for watching the postcast make sure you subscribe on whatever
Starting point is 00:01:20 platform you do stream if you're watching YouTube, make sure that you smash that notification bell so you know when all of my content goes live. But again, it comes down to the Titans beating themselves. Penalties, especially in the first half, the penalties reared their ugly head. Five penalties for 50 yards. The first drive when the Titans punted, the Patriots got 30 extra yards from where they started. The Patriots were set to be on their 30-yard line, and then two penalties forced the Titans to re-punt from a further position backwards, and then the Patriots got the ball on their own on the Titans' 40-yard line. So that's a 30-yard swing on the opening drive of the game. The Titans punt, but the Patriots get 30 extra
Starting point is 00:02:06 yards because of the penalty on Nick DeZubnar. So you want to talk about penalties, especially in the first half, five of them for 50 yards in the game, just critical, critical mistake for the Titans as that drive led to a Patriots touchdown, their first touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter, 7-0 when Kendrick Bourne just made an incredible catch over Kevin Byard in man coverage in the end zone. So the Titans go down 7-0 in most part due to penalties on the punt. So penalties hurt the Titans there. The Titans do respond, though, with a touchdown drive.
Starting point is 00:02:41 They go 17 plays for 69 yards. Nick Westbrook, Akina, insane that Mike Vrabel had to challenge that touchdown drive. They go 17 plays for 69 yards. Nick Westbrook-Akina, insane that Mike Vrabel had to challenge that touchdown catch. Just terrible by the officials. Nick Westbrook-Akina was never touched by a Patriots defender and he rolled over the goal line. Should have never had to use a challenge on that. The refs continue to be awful for the NFL this year. But then another Titans mistake, shooting themselves in the foot, a missed extra point from Randy Bullock, who had been playing great football, but the last two weeks starting to show some cracks in that confidence. The Patriots responded with a field goal drive, but you got to give the Titans defense credit
Starting point is 00:03:18 there. The Patriots went nine plays, 75 yards, and the Titans held up in the red zone to hold them to a field goal, and the Titans defense did a great job in the red zone throughout the day. The Patriots were only 2-5 in the red zone, so that's a good job by the Titans' defense. The Titans get the ball back. They drive down after some good field position, but Randy Bullock misses a field goal. The Titans shooting themselves in the foot. It continues.
Starting point is 00:03:44 The Patriots respond. They're like, if you guys aren't going to take the field goal, then we'll take the field goal. The Titans shooting themselves in the foot. It continues. The Patriots respond. They're like, if you guys aren't going to take the field goal, then we'll take the field goal. So instead of the game being 10-9, it's 13-6. And then the Titans are driving Dontrell Hilliard going down the field, and Hilliard fumbles, shooting themselves in the foot. It's 13-6.
Starting point is 00:04:05 The Titans have a chance to tie it up. They got 40 yards on the drive. They're moving. And then a fumble by Hilliard. So that just kills the Titans there. The Patriots take that fumble at the end of the half and they turn it into three points. The Titans do well in the red zone again, but the Patriots still get their point.
Starting point is 00:04:20 So 16-6. The Titans are down by 10. Then Dontrell Hilliard. Just an amazing run at the end of the half, 68 yards to the house, really kept the Titans in the game. 16-3, going into halftime after all the mistakes that the Titans had made, a turnover, missed kicks, penalties, to be down by three, that's great. The Titans come down, out of halftime, play good defense, stop the Patriots again in the red zone and the
Starting point is 00:04:46 Patriots miss a field goal so that's right before the end of halftime the Patriots miss a field goal so good stuff there from the Titans the Patriots come out of halftime on their first drive the Titans stop them in the red zone again and the Patriots kick a field goal but it's 19-13 at this time
Starting point is 00:05:01 19-13 the Titans are right in it a score gives them a chance to go ahead. So they're in this game. But then, Deontay Foreman breaks off a huge run. Going down past mid-yard, or the midfield mark. Ready for the Titans to go score and take that lead.
Starting point is 00:05:18 And he fumbles. Another mental mistake. Another example of the Titans shooting themselves in the foot. But the Titans' defense holds. The Patriots only get four yards on six plays, and they punt. Great job by the Titans' defense, forcing a punt.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Their only punt on the day that they forced, but still a good job. But the Titans get the ball back, and the Titans' offense hasn't had any consistency for weeks. They get five yards and they punt right away. So, you know, it's good that the Titans defense forced the Patriots to punt after the fumble, but it swung the field position battle in a way where the Titans are starting on their own 11 yard line and they get nothing and they punt. New England starts on the 44 yard line,
Starting point is 00:06:00 great field position, and they turn it into their next touchdown. Kendrick Bourne, 41 yards, and that was the backbreaker. The Titans' defense basically quit on that play. Jackrabbit Jenkins, a miserable effort. Amani Hooker, a miserable effort. Kevin Byard was terrible in coverage. Jayon Brown, just a god-awful effort on the sideline trying to push Bourne out. So the Patriots go up by 13 there. The Titans come back, drive all the way down.
Starting point is 00:06:24 They're in the red zone. It's fourth down. You got to go for it. You got to throw the ball. You can't just hold on to it and take a sack. And Tannehill tries to force it into a tough window, and it's a tip ball and an interception. That was basically it for the Titans.
Starting point is 00:06:36 The Patriots come down. They get another field goal. The Titans go for it on fourth. Don't get it. The Patriots turn that into a garbage time touchdown to Damian Harris, who I'm sure made a lot of fantasy players happy by saving his day with that touchdown, but that put the Patriots up 36-13
Starting point is 00:06:51 and the Titans even capped it off with a turnover. A fumble by Kari Blossom game. So, there you go. Shoot yourself in the foot with penalties, with turnovers. Four on the day. That's nine turnovers in two weeks for the Titans. Missed kicks. missed tackles, just not good enough. Not good enough. Now there were some good spots. The Titans ran the ball for 270 yards on a great run defense, maybe the best run
Starting point is 00:07:18 defense in the league. So good stuff from the Titans to get the run game going back-to-back weeks. They're just turning over the ball and killing themselves. The Titans' defense, yeah, they kind of gave it away at the end of the game. But the Titans held them to 4-10 on third down, 2-5 in the red zone, had two sacks, caused a missed field goal. I mean, the Titans' defense did a pretty good job. If the Titans had their regular offense out there, the Titans win that game. I think they win it by 10. So I guess overall, my point here is I'm not ready to panic. I'm not
Starting point is 00:07:53 going to panic on the Titans right now playing with a practice squad JV unit on offense that's causing turnovers. I mean, Kari Blossom games running the ball and fumbles. Two guys who were on the couch a month ago are fumbling for the Titans after big runs. Tannehill threw one interception, but I'm not really even that mad at him about that. Where they were in the game, you gotta force it. You gotta go for it. You can't take a sack or throw it
Starting point is 00:08:20 out of bounds there. You gotta try to fit it in somewhere. Now, Tannehill wasn't great in this game by any measure, but look at what he's working with. The leading receiver on the team had two catches for 25 yards. The Titans are just trying to manufacture this old school run the ball down your throat type effort, and it's just nearly impossible for him to get anything consistently
Starting point is 00:08:40 going on offense in the passing game. So I'm not ready to panic. I think the Titans are still in a really good spot. They're probably not going to get the number one seed in the AFC, but all they have to do is win their division, get that home playoff game, get healthy. They're going into their bye. Hopefully they can get healthy, and if they do,
Starting point is 00:08:57 I still feel like the Titans can accomplish their long-term goals, which is a Super Bowl this year. Now, if they never get healthy, then, of course, they're not going to be able to do that. But I guess my long-term ceiling for the Titans, when healthy, has not changed based on this two-game losing streak. So that's going to do it for this Week 12 Postcast.
