Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - REPORT: Tennessee Titans COACHING CANDIDATE List Adds New Names & JC Latham Reality Check is Needed
Episode Date: December 2, 2025The Tennessee Titans biggest to-do this offseason will be hiring a new head coach and with calls for new leadership from the locker room, hiring someone who fits that bill will be more important than ...ever. That makes a recent report on the Titans coaching search more interesting because some of the new names do not fit the mold of what most expect in a hire. Also, the discussion around JC Latham has reached a fever pitch this week and no matter what you hear, everyone seems to be overdoing it because the truth about Latham is he has disappointed so far, but like most players on the team, should get the opportunity to improve under better coaching. Finally, Titans fans need to prepare themselves for the Cam Ward vs. Shedeur Sanders discussions that will ensue over the next week and realize that there is not shot those conversations are in good faith. The most important thing for the Tennessee Titans future is to find the right head coach.
And we got a recent update with some brand new names that have me very excited about the Titans process.
I'll tell you who they are on today's edition of Locked On Titans.

We're going to talk about a brand new report that came out on Monday
with some new names that the Tennessee Titans are interested in
for their open head coaching position.
I'm going to tell you who the names are
and why they have me very excited about the Titans process that they're going through right now also.
We got to have a reality check on J.C. Latham and the conversation around him that's gone off the rails this week.
I'm disappointed in Latham, but we have to also be a little realistic here as well.
And finally, we got to get prepared, folks, because the conversation with Cam Ward and Shador Sanders
is also going to go off the rails over the next week.
But with that being said, do want to thank you for making lots.
Locked-on Titans, your first listen,
and thank you for making the Locked-on Podcast Network,

Speaking of every day, shout-up to my everydayers out there.
Tune in Monday through Friday.
Couldn't do it without you guys.
If you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one.
Because, again, the Tennessee Titans are in a head coaching search process.
Right now, there's going to be new information.
nonstop over the next six to seven weeks before the Titans ultimately make a decision.
You want to stay up to date. You want to stay informed.
You need to stay locked in with the Locked on Titans podcast.
But with that being said, again, we did get a big time report from Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated
and it has me very, very excited about the process that the Tennessee Titans are going to go through
to hire their next coach.
We got this update and it says, quote,
the Giants and the Titans
coaching searches are steadily moving along
both remain very much in the research phase
but that doesn't mean having a
but that doesn't mean having a jump on every
hasn't helped
in Tennessee
that's meant watching a lot of tape
on a lot of candidates
and using the know-how in the room
beyond just Packers roots
of President of Football Operations Chad Brinker
and chief's roots of general manager Mike Borgonzi.
The Titans also have former general managers Dave Ziegler
and Reggie McKenzie on board.
The initial thought
post-Bryan Callahan had been to find more experience
and someone who could work with Cam Ward.
Along those lines, it tied into the networks of the guys on hand,
former Bears coach Matt Nagy, who has ties to Borgonzi,
or former Cowboys and Packers coach Mike McCarthy, who has ties to Brinker,
could wind up being the guy.
But that hasn't stopped the Titans from looking at a wide array of candidates,
even guys such as Chargers, D.C. Jesse Minter and Rams defensive coordinator, Chris Shula,
who don't fit into the above box.
At this point, Tennessee has studied and discussed plenty of prospective coaches
as the brass keeps working towards their narrowed down list
at the end of the season
Breer finishes, both teams still have the benefit of time
with the end of the regular season still five weeks away.
Look, I have made no secret about the fact
that I still want an offensive coach.
My perfect candidate would still be an offensive coach.
but as we talked about on yesterday's show
this team desperately needs a leader
in the biggest way possible
they need a true professional NFL coach
to lead a professional program
and get this thing back on track
that is why Mike McCarthy
is my top candidate
because he checks both of those boxes
like Albert Breer is saying in this report
he literally calls it out
right there.
They want to find someone with more experience than Brian Callahan
and someone who can work with Cam Ward.
To me, someone who has experience and is a professional NFL coach
while also having a quarterback acumen and being an offensive guy
is Mike McCarthy.
In fairness, Matt Nagy also checks that box.
He has more experience.
He has been a head coach in the NFL before.
He's been in big time playoff games, made deep postseason runs, been involved in some of the most successful offenses in the NFL over the last few years.
Heck, he got, you know, Mitch Trubisky to a playoff win.
12 wins with Mitch Trubisky.
There is something to be said for Matt Nagy.
But me personally looking at these two candidates, I am much more interested in Mike McCarthy than Matt Nagy.
Matt Nagy has way less experience, way less success than Mike McCarthy.
Mike McCarthy had three 12-win seasons with the Green Bay Packers or with the Dallas Cowboys.
He won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers.
He has had five top five offenses in the NFL.
He has never had an offense that was like in the bottom five of the NFL.
Mike McCarthy has consistently produced decent offensive results.
and more often than not produced great offensive results.
If we want the Tennessee Titans to be a better offensive team
and to guarantee that the Titans are a better offensive team next year,
Mike McCarthy is the answer.
And while Matt Nagy may be able to check both of those boxes as well,
he does not check those boxes anywhere near as well as Mike McCarthy does.
Matt Nagy has always been a prodigy of Andy Reed
where Mike McCarthy is the guy who was the,
engine of the offenses that he gets credit for, like when we're giving credit to Mike McCarthy
for being part of these offenses, he is the engine that is driving those offenses.
When we're giving Matt Nagy credit for the Chiefs offenses,
Andy Reed is the engine that is driving those offensive successes.
So I'm sorry, Matt Nagy and Mike McCarthy are in two totally different realms of enjoyment
and excitement for me.
when it comes to the guy that checks both those boxes.
But again, what has me very excited is the other two names that were mentioned.
Jesse Mentor and Chris Shula, those are young, hot, defensive coordinators
who could also potentially be those guys.
Thank Mike McDonald for the Baltimore Ravens
goes to be the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks.
Mike McDonald is a leader.
He runs a program there.
Now, he's also a great defensive month.
one of the cutting edge schematic defensive minds
in the entire NFL who also calls plays.
So I guess what I'm saying is
I think that Mike McCarthy and a guy who can work with Cam Ward
and has more experience is the perfect option.
That's the right way to go.
But I am excited about the fact
that the Titans aren't just going to look for people
who check those two boxes.
At minimum, it's about gathering information,
garnering more intel, you talk to Chris Shula, you talk to Jesse Mentor.
You find out what they would do with the roster, what they would do with the offense.
Who would you hire on your offensive coaching staff?
What would be the answers you would have for Cam Ward?
What is your plan for developing this young quarterback?
And while I don't think a defensive mind is ideal,
if you look under enough rocks and you look at enough information,
you just might find someone special.
You just might find someone who does check the boxes so well
that even though they might not be an offensive coach.
They are a guy you can not, you simply cannot pass up on.
So I still think that an offensive coach
with previous head coaching experience is the best option.
But I could tell you with certainty,
I would rather take a chance on a Jesse mentor or a Chris Shula,
a cutting edge defensive guy who also might be a leader.
Just because you haven't been a head coach before
doesn't mean that you can't be a leader
that can galvanize and save this franchise.
But I would like those guys
over Arthur Smith or Joe Brady at this point.
You know what I mean?
Those are guys who I think are dropping on my list of interest.
I am so out on Arthur Smith and I don't like Matt Nagy.
Those are like the two worst names that I've heard.
I cannot believe that that's, you know, a real option
potentially as we've heard in other reports about those guys
but at the end of the day
I want offense, I want experience
but I would rather go with a guy like a Jesse Mentor
or Chris Shula on the defensive side of the ball
then go with guys who I have no faith in
like an Arthur Smith or a Matt Nagy
even though they check the boxes that I want to see checked
and the fact that the Tennessee Titans are not
holding themselves to those boxes.
and making sure that they have a wide net of possibilities,
I think that's a very encouraging sign
that they're not just going to rely on their previous personal connections
but they're going to go look at some of the most cutting edge
and some of the most exciting candidates,
even guys who don't check the boxes that they prefer,
that is a good sign to me and it makes me excited.
Now, something I'm not as excited about
is the performance of J.C. Latham lately and the reality is
he actually didn't play that bad against the Jags,
but that doesn't mean that he hasn't been a disappointment this season.

Titans fans. Let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about the new names that were included in the report from Albert Brear with Jesse Mentor and Chris Shula and why that's so exciting to hear.
Excited about this process and to see it play out and the Titans have already gotten a head start on that.
But now I want to move back to the actual.
football team itself. We got to talk about
J.C. Latham has been a big lightning rod this week.
Everyone talking about his performance.
Latham is a bum. Latham is a bust.
You got certain people defending J.C. Latham saying he didn't play that bad
and blah blah blah.
And I am here to tell you this.
This is my hot take on J.C. Latham.
And I talked to you guys after the game that Latham has been a disappointment.
And I told you, people who are saying that he might need to move to guard,
you cannot say with 100% uncertainty that those people are wrong.
That is exactly what I said on Sunday.
And that's fine.
But I find myself, this is my hot take on J.C. Latham.
I'm in the middle of both sides.
I don't have a hot take on J.C. Latham.
That's my hot take.
Is that we should not be hot taking J.C. Latham right now.
Here are some realities.
J.C. Latham has struggled this year.
He's played in eight games.
He's given up seven sacks.
Only 12 pressures.
That's not terrible.
But seven sacks in eight games is terrible.
I don't care what it...
Listen, I'm a guy who studies the tape, watches the tape,
breaks down the tape.
I don't care about the tape.
At some point, the raw numbers do outweigh the tape.
I don't care how you gave up seven sacks.
I don't care if there are a weird.
circumstances on every single one of them and I don't care if you want to say let's go on a case
by case basis and the seven sacks don't you know a couple of them or cam words fall one of them
j c latham wasn't ready as the ball was snapped and the guy went right by him like in week
one against Denver go a case i don't care at some point at some point i don't care this is like
pto at work and i'm sorry i've been a manager and
You have folks who say, oh, well, I'm sick, or, you know, my car broke down or this happened or that happened.
I got to take PTO.
Well, you're out of PTO.
And they say, well, it's not fair that, you know, what am I supposed to do?
It's a real life issue.
Well, the problem is, is that you took eight vacations this year.
You called off six other times this year when you said you were sick or there was some problem, whatever.
The problem isn't that you don't have PTO right now.
The problem is you wasted it before when you didn't really need to waste it.
and now you don't have it when you actually do need it,
and now you've got to take a write-up.
Obviously, I've had to have those tough conversations before with people.
But that's the truth.
A lot of people want to make excuses for things
because of this specific example,
this specific scenario wasn't my fault.
Well, what about the 10 scenarios before that
that led you to be in this position that were your fault?
So you could say that J.C. Latham didn't have a bad game against the Jaguars
and outside of a couple of plays, like two or three plays, you would be right.
And for those people who were out there saying,
J.C. Latham had two or three bad plays out of 60,
and now people want to call him a bust.
You're right.
He did only have a couple of bad plays.
He gave up the sack,
and then he got bullied into the backfield,
or he gave up the tackle for loss to Josh Heinz Allen,
where he cut right in front of his face,
and Tajay Spears got tackled for loss,
and then there was one on the passing play
where he got bullied into the backfield,
by Josh Heinz Allen.
There's another play where Cam Ward got sacked
where J.C. Latham just stops blocking
and the guy who he should be blocking
hits Cam Ward and that's the strip sack fumble.
So I would say J.C. Latham had at least three bad plays
and I would say there are more than that when you go through the tape
which I'm going to do on the Tick-Tac Titans film channel
on Thursday. I'm going to have a J.C. Latham video out.
Might be out on Wednesday but probably Thursday.
But regardless, my overall point here is
that people acting like
J.C. Latham hasn't been a disappointment
they are also wrong.
People who are acting like J.C. Latham
is an absolute bust.
Cut him from the team.
He's never going to be a good offensive tackle.
This guy's a waste of a draft pick.
It's over.
Call the fight.
Those people are also wrong too.
I don't agree with people
trying to act like J.C. Latham
has been better than he has been.
And I don't agree with people trying to say
that he's a bust.
I think both of those,
are hot takes that are wrong. Because here is some reality for you.
Here is a reality check on J.C. Latham.
He has real issues on tape.
He has slow feet.
And because he has slow feet and he knows that he struggles with speed,
he oversets.
That means he drops too far back or he drops too far wide
because he doesn't want to get beat to the outside with speed.
And when he does that, what does he do?
He oversets. He overdoes it. He gets too deep. He gets too wide.
And then what happens, he gets beat inside.
The defender crosses his face.
So the problem is that he has slow feet.
Because he has slow feet, he oversets.
Because he oversets, he has a tendency to get beat inside with speed
and then the speed is ultimately the problem.
So the biggest issue for J.C. Latham is he is slow.
The other issue with J.C. Latham is that his anchor is not as strong as advertised.
And I said last week that whether that is a result of the speed getting him off balance
or him losing the weight that he lost, he lost 20 pounds from last year,
because last year he said he was too slow
and he couldn't move around and it hurt him late in the year.
He admitted it publicly.
Well, this year he's lost 20 pounds.
and now his anchor is not nearly as good
as what it was advertised coming out of college.
We were told that this guy,
and in fairness it is on tape.
His anchor was tremendous.
You could not get him off balance.
You could not knock him back.
Once you got into J.C. Latham's chest, you were done.
That has not been the case at the NFL level.
And guys are moving faster.
They are with more force.
So he's off balance because of the speed.
His anchor isn't as strong because guys are,
moving at a quicker speed, developing more force and hitting him harder.
And maybe it's the lost weight, but you can't be too slow
and also have, you can't be a slow player with slow feet and also not be strong enough.
That can't happen at the same time.
And then we were also, he was also billed as a bulldozing run blocker
who will move guys out of the gap.
But far too often, he doesn't play with.
with nastiness or physicality in the run game.
He seems confused on his run assignment.
He doesn't finish.
And this was a problem with the pass blocking rep
that I told you about that I would include
where Cam Ward got strip sacked
and it's not 100% on J.C. Latham
but he just stopped blocking.
Play through the whistle.
Fight through the whistle.
I want a guy who is driving someone into the ground
at the echo of the whistle.
Not someone who literally stops blocking in the middle of the play.
So J.C. Latham has just not had the anchor,
the drive in the run game,
or the nasty finishing mentality
that you'd think you'd get from a guy who nicknamed himself the Trench King.
So, with that being said, though,
with all of those problems being a not,
those are the real issues with J.C. Latham.
He has slow feet,
his anchor hasn't been as good
he doesn't finish through the whistle
and he's not a bulldozing run blocker like you'd think he'd be
all of that is true
and that is why he has been a disappointment
to this point in his career
that is why it's fair for people to wonder
if he might need to be moved inside to guard
however declaring him a bust
saying outright 100% right now
no he's a guard he's not a tackle anymore
I'm sorry that's a step too far
because he's still a strong,
big-bodied guy
who is a starting level
offensive tackle in the NFL.
Right now he may be a below-average starting tackle,
but again, we can't pretend like he's Dennis Daley,
Nicholas Petit Ferreir,
um,
freaking Andre Dillard level.
We can't pretend he's that bad
because that's also not true.
So, I'm going to say for J.C. Latham,
like I'm going to say for a lot of players on this football team,
I'd like to see them with a better offensive coaching staff.
I'd like to see them with new coaching.
I think it's way to give up on J.C. Latham is a tackle,
even if it's worth having conversations and exploring the landscape this all season.
But we have five more games left of Latham to play offensive tackle.
And we're going to get a new coaching.
staff in here. So their opinion on J.C. Latham's tape will obviously determine what happens
next year, but that's, I know that's not, Latham sucks, Latham's better than you think. I don't have a
hot take. To me, the right take is that Latham has been a disappointment so far, but that
the book is not over on Latham either. And that's not going to satisfy the mob, but that's the
truth that I'm living in right now. And I'm excited to break down.
the tape because again he didn't really play that bad outside of a couple of really bad plays
against Jacksonville but that's the life of an offensive lineman you simply can't have
those really really bad plays but with that being said talking about conversations that have
gone off the rails and talking points and hot takes buckle in titans fans because we're
going to have about a week of cam ward chador sanders nonsense do want to let you guys know that
today's episode is brought to you by FanDool Sportsbook.

Titans fans, let's cap off.
today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast.
We talked about the recent update
to the Tennessee Titans Head coaching search.
The Titans are well underway in that search
and they're adding new names and interesting names
which we talked about.
Then we talked about J.C. Latham, what I've seen on tape,
what I think the reality check for J.C.
Latham is for fans in the conversation
that's gone off the rails.
But now we've got another off-the-rails conversation
to get ready for between the Shador Sanders
and the Cam Ward fanatics.
But do want to thank you for making the Locked on Titans podcast.
You're at first listen each and every day.
Remember Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round always for free.
Make sure you get subscribed.
Stay subscribed.
Also, thank you for making the locked on podcast network, the number one sports podcast network.
But strap in Titans fans for Shador Sanders, Cam Ward discourse.
It is about to go off the rails.
I would imagine here Wednesday, Thursday, Friday as the NFL landscape shifts from
examining what just happened to talking about what could happen next.
This is going to get the Tennessee Titans more national attention
than they have gotten all year long.
Like even probably more than Brian Callahan getting fired.
And this is why.
Because Shador Sanders is more popular than Camort.
It's really that simple.
It's that simple.
When I see people complaining in the comment section online,
why are we talking about Shodor Sanders,
why are blah, blah, blah, blah, why are they bringing him up?
Why is this?
why they're that? It's because he's popular.
People want to talk about him.
He's a lightning rock.
He is an interesting figure.
Okay?
So, with that in mind, and then the natural, Shador, and Cam were friends,
they were both considered the top two quarterbacks coming out of the draft,
the story of Cam going number one,
Shador falling to the fifth round.
That makes for a David versus Goliath narrative,
even if it's not true.
You know, Cam Ward got all the glory,
being taken number one, Shador had to wait and be embarrassed and humiliated.
And like, it just is, at the end of the day, human beings love drama.
And it is a dramatic storyline.
And, in my opinion, when the Browns whoop the Titans,
the conversation is going to immediately go to Shador Sanders is better than Cam Ward.
But I would say this.
Harold Fanon Jr.
David Nizoku.
Quinn Sean Judkins
Jerry Judy
All of those players I just mentioned
All of those players
are better than any skill position player
on the Titans right now
Calvin Ridley and Jerry Judy
I think are similar
but Jerry Judy last year was
better than Calvin Ridley
and I think if you had a choice between the two
if you were starting a team
pretty much everyone would take Jerry Judy
he's a younger version of Calvin Ridley
in his prime
so with no Calvin Ridley
due to injury being out for the season
the Browns have
five
six skill position players
that you would take
before you'd take anybody on the Titans
now the Titans
offensive line is better than the Browns
I would agree with that
but we know in Browns fans
Browns fans don't know how
good they have it with Kevin Stefansky. They think he's a bomb. They should fire him. He doesn't
know what he's doing, all of that. And I know that the Brown's results haven't been very good as
of late with tough quarterback situations the last few years. But Kevin Stavansky knows
offense and is a good coach. He has gotten the most out of some of these Browns teams over the
years. Their roster is significantly worse now on offense than it was when they had a good
offensive line and Nick Chubb, one of the best backs. And you know what I mean? Like it's
different now. Kevin Stafansky is a far superior
coach on offense
far superior head coach
of a football team
than what the Tennessee Titans
have offensive coaching right now.
So far better skill position players
far better offensive coaching
and Shador Sanders has not played well in his two weeks
go watch the tape.
It's not like he's playing well.
Cam Ward has made way better throws
and had way better plays
than Shador has had.
and yeah, Cam's been playing all season.
Shador's played two games.
But I'm just saying,
anybody out there who's trying to drive the,
Shador Sanders is already better than Cam Ward narrative
and is going to try to drive that narrative
after the Browns beat the Titans
because the Browns are a better football team
and not to mention Miles Garrett,
who's maybe the best defensive player in the history of the league,
like he is going to shatter the sack record this year.
So I'm sorry, just prepare yourself Titans fans.
We are going to hear so much Shador is better than Cam.
Shador is already better than Cam, blah, blah, blah.
It's just insane.
And look, we don't know that that won't be the case.
Maybe three years down the road,
Shador is better than Cam Ward.
But nothing about what's about to happen this week
when the Browns beat the Titans
is going to make that point real.
And here's another reality.
There are people who are going to defend Shador Sanders
and prop him up and give him love
and all of that because it's bigger than football.
There are certain athletes that represent the cultural arguments.
You know what I mean?
All the culture wars that take place in our society nowadays.
Non-stop, this and that, and what things mean.
People take athletes and use them to be like an example of their views.
You know?
And Shador is just one of those guys who,
mean something to the culture, like a LeBron James, for example, who's always, you know,
getting placed into these culture conversations. Shador is one of those guys that people use
to further those discussions. So that's a level of support and a level of love and a level of
I'm going to ride for this guy no matter what. It's bigger than, hey, what are you seeing on the
football field? Like there are bigger things at play that lead people to be so hardcore and
for defending Shador Sanders.
So add that into this conversation, into the pot
that's already there of what's going to make this a divisive game
and it's going to make it even worse.
And that removes even the small amount of sanity
that this conversation was going to be had with.
It goes totally out the window when you add in
that there are people who just like Shador because of what he means to them.
And they're going to defend him until their last breath no matter what.
and there's more of those people for Shador
than there are those people for Cam.
So that's how the conversation is going to go.
So just prepare yourself mentally
for what's about to happen over the next week.
But with that in mind tomorrow, crossover Thursday,
me and my guy Spencer German from Locked on Browns, Ohio Boys Connection.
We'll get you ready for this game
because it's going to be a doozy, folks.
But with that being said, that's going to do it for me today, folks.
As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland,
and this was Locked on Titans.
Thank you.
