Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans ALL TIME OFFENSE: Derrick Henry IS RB1, AJ Brown Earns It & Delanie Walker's Due
Episode Date: July 6, 2025The Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee in 1997 before becoming the Titans officially in 1999 and since that time we have seen countless dazzling players on the offensive side of the ball. Certainly the...re have been more at some spots than others but regardless, the talent that has been on display makes crafting an ALL TIME OFFENSE a difficult task. Quarterback is not a difficult spot though as Steve McNair is the clear winner, although Ryan Tannehill remains underrated. Running back is a challenge though with three legends, Eddie George, Chris Johnson and Derrick Henry all battling, but Henry is the king that deserves the crown. It may sting, but AJ Brown deserves his place at wide receiver while Delanie Walker, despite the fantastic career of Frank Wycheck, gets the tight end spot. Finally, the offensive line is a tough lineup to set as the Titans have seemed to always have some great linemen, even if that hasn't been the case as of late. gonna go through quarterback to the offensive line, tell you why I'm taking
Derrick Henry over all the other running backs, give me Delaney Walker at tight
end and I'm gonna go over some tough choices on the offensive line as well.
Before we dive into all of it do want wanna thank you for making the Locked on Titans podcast

Couldn't do it without you guys.
And if you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one on tomorrow's show.
I'm going to do my all-time starting defense for the Tennessee Titans.
But then we begin the 2025 Locked On Titans training camp preview series.
I'm going to go through every single position on the roster, offense and defense, tell you who I think is a lock to make the team,
who's on the bubble to make the team and who's a long shot to make the team.
That'll start with quarterback and running back on Wednesday.
So training camp right around the corner. Make sure you get subscribed,
stay subscribed. It's your team every day. With that being said though,
we started the quarterback position when we talk about
the all-time starting lineup for the Tennessee Titans offense.
And quite honestly, there is no doubt in my mind, it is Steve McNair.
And coming off the 4th of July weekend, obviously, when his tragic death took place,
it feels only appropriate to take time not only to mention that, duh,
Steve McNair is the QB1 on the all-time Tennessee Titans starting offense,
starting team. There's no question about that, but also it gives us an opportunity
just to remember his greatness and appreciate, you know, the experience that
we got to have with Steve McNair on the Tennessee Titans. I'm obviously in my
mid-30s, so I got to experience the full run
of Tennessee Titans football from 1997
when they moved here to 1999
when they became the Tennessee Titans.
Officially, I've got to experience all of that
in my lifetime.
And I know that there are people who listen to the show
and who watch the show,
who don't necessarily have those memories
and didn't get to experience that
because you were just born after or you were too young, just a little bit younger than I was and didn't really get to feel that.
But man, watching Steve McNair gut through all the injuries, be the toughest player out on the field at all times, make all these incredible plays.
We talk about Cam Ward and how Cam Ward can extend plays with his legs and how the play never dies and he'll shake off multiple defenders in the backfield keep the play going fire
Something downfield take off and make a big game with his legs like you know
There's reasons that people who aren't in the Tennessee Titans ecosystem
Compared Cam Ward to Steve McNair coming out of college, and I know some people just absolutely hate hearing that
But I'm sorry when there are people who aren't related to the Titans saying hey
He looks a lot like like it's hard not so I understand that there are some people listening who didn't get to experience steve mcnair
But just know that I am hoping for you guys that
Cam war does get to be this new era steve mcnair and he looks like he has the ability to do it
So let's hope but it is tough. I do want to mention
the ability to do it so let's hope but it is tough I do want to mention Ryan Tannehill is so underrated guys look I know he had big mess-ups the Cincinnati
game will never die for most people and it shouldn't we can't forget that but
man in 2019 when he took over 2020 Ryan Tannehill is the second best
quarterback this franchise has had since they moved to Tennessee obviously Warren
Moon and you could talk you know I am only as old as I am. I can't talk too
much to the Houston Oilers players. That's why none of them are on my list. All I know
is what I've seen and what I've experienced. And I'm sorry, but Ryan Tainahill is clear
and by far the second best quarterback of the Tennessee Titans era. No doubt about that.
But now we do have to get to running back and look there's Derrick Henry, there's Chris Johnson,
there's Eddie George. You go back all three eras of winning football for the Titans. The Super Bowl
early teams and then the late 2000 early 2000 like 2008, 2009, Chris Johnson, Titans teams that were pretty good.
And then the 2009 to 2019 to 2021 Tennessee Titans with Derrick Henry.
Like the running backs are really the era of football.
So it's between those three guys.
And if we're being honest, you look at the stats,. Derek Henry, eight seasons, 9,500 yards, 93 total touchdowns,
four Pro Bulls, one All-Pro, one offensive player of the year, a 2,000 yard season, going
to the AFC Championship game. Eddie George, eight years, 10,000 yards, 60 or 74 total
touchdowns, four Pro Bulls, one All-Pro, offensive rookie of the year, didn't have a 2K season,
but was with the Titans team that went to the Super Bowl
and was truly the catalyst for that
in a different era of NFL football,
where the running back truly was what the offense
was built around, and Eddie George was the foundation
of the Titans offense during that Super Bowl run
in that era of football.
Chris Johnson, on the other hand, is not quite at that level in my opinion.
Six seasons with the team, 7,965 yards, 58 total touchdowns,
three Pro Bowls, one All-Pro, one Offensive Player of the Year, the 2K season.
He had the most total yards in a season of any of these guys of course, but the winning wasn't there.
The 13-3 season was absolutely fantastic no doubt about it but they got knocked
off in the first game against the Ravens it was terrible I remember sad times so
Chris Johnson doesn't have the total stats nor does he have the winning to
kind of punctuate his case against the other two so it comes down to Derek
Henry and Eddie George and
folks who are maybe a little bit older than me who really really, you know,
loved that Eddie George run and that is the highlight of their Titans fandom.
I understand that. I would say the highlight of my Titans fandom was the Derek Henry years and the AJ Brown years. That was,
that coincided with me taking over the podcast and totally changed my life in a total.
So obviously I'm a little bit biased in that regard
and maybe that'll show up later in the episode,
but I'm going with Derek Henry.
I know that Eddie George was the catalyst for the team,
but Steve McNair got a MVP award.
You know, Steve McNair had three Pro Bowls,
two All-Pro appearances, one co-MVP, the Super Bowl appearance,
27,000 passing yards, 156 passing touchdowns.
Like, I have Steve McNair as the best quarterback and Tana Hill is the second best.
So to me, it's only fair to flip that with the running backs and have Derek Henry as the best. And let's be real, Derek Henry had 20 more total touchdowns than Eddie George.
Derek Henry had a 2000 yard season.
Derek Henry is a better all-time football player than Eddie George is.
That is the facts.
Derek Henry all time, his whole career is a better player than Eddie George.
There's just no doubt about
it. He's a more impactful player. He's a more dangerous offensive weapon. The 99 yard touchdowns,
the long touchdown runs. Derek Henry also, in my opinion, I know that Eddie George was
a founding father. So this sounds crazy, but Derek Henry's impact on the culture and the relevancy that he brought to the Tennessee Titans,
to me, Steve McNair was the heartbeat of those Tennessee.
Eddie George may be the best player, Eddie George, this and that, but Steve McNair was the heartbeat and the symbol of those teams.
You look back, you think about the guttiness of Steve McNair and Eddie George,
of course the physicality there, but Derek Henry is the true face of the third wave of successful
football in the Tennessee Titans history. And to me, that's why Derek Henry has the high end peak production with the 2000 yard season.
Also the second most winning we've seen in the Tennessee Titans existence.
I'm going with Derek Henry as the number one running back for the Tennessee Titans on the all time starting team.
Trust me when I say it's close.
The reason I am a Tennessee Titans fan largely has to do with Eddie George was an Ohio State
Buckeye and won a Heisman Trophy there.
So I loved him already and that led me to the Tennessee Titans as an eight, nine year
old boy.
But even with that in my heart, I have to admit what I've seen and what I know.
And Derek Henry is the better player.
And if I was making a Tennessee Titans all time starting offense, which I am I'm taking Derrick Henry as my lead running back. No doubt about that. No doubt about
it's close, but I have no doubts. Derrick Henry, let me know who you're taking in that running back
debate. But now we got to talk about tight end and wide receiver. Today's episode is brought to you

and then I'm gonna begin our training camp preview series,
going over the entire roster position by position,
leading up to training camp.
So you know every single player who's on the team,
every single player who's fighting for a spot,
I'm gonna do my locks, my bubble guys, my long shots.
One of my favorite things I do all year here on the show.
Make sure that you guys don't miss it.
Get subscribed, stay subscribed to your team every day.
But with Steve McNair and Derek Henry
as my starting backfield and Lorenzo Neal at fullback.
All right.
Now we move to wide receiver.
And I got a little bit of a controversial take.
And quite honestly, some of you guys have probably heard me say this before.
And I'm going to keep saying it until somebody jumps over.
But when we talk about wide receiver, Derek Mason is clear.
Number one, I don't see how anybody could ever argue that eight seasons,
453 catches, 6,114 yards, 37 touchdowns, two Pro Bowl appearances, one All-Pro.
Worth noting the All-Pro appearance that Derrick Mason had was as a returner.
It wasn't actually as a wide receiver.
People like to forget to mention that, but the truth is, while we're here, hate to do
this to you guys, but must be said, what a sad existence at wide receiver for this franchise.
Like I don't mean to hate, I'm not, this doesn't intend to hate on Derek Mason because Derek
Mason is a solid NFL player, but Derek Mason is your clear number one wide receiver, 450
catches, 6,000 yards, 37 touchdowns, two Pro Bulls, one of them is a returner,
the only All-Pro we got. That's not good, man. That's not good. Like, we don't even have a,
you know, an All-Pro wide receiver to put in here. Yes, if you go back to the oiler stuff,
I've already explained why. I only focus on the Titan stuff because it's all I know.
It's all I'm educated to speak on, quite honestly. But man, ouch, okay, ouch.
But nonetheless, Derek Mason clear number one.
I don't think anybody disputes that part of the Super Bowl teams.
Excellent player.
They needed him.
But number two is where the controversy begins, because I'm taking AJ Brown.
I know that the stats aren't quite as good as some other options.
Like we'll talk about them like a Drew Bennett or Nate Washington.
Maybe even you want to put in, like, you know, Kevin Dyson,
Corey Davis. It's not that different because, well, AJ was only here for three seasons.
But AJ Brown is the second best wide receiver in the franchise's history.
And quite honestly,
if they weren't idiots and traded him away, AJ Brown would be by far easily the best wide
receiver to ever exist in Tennessee Titans history. Like it was not even going to be
close. It was not going to be close. And it's crazy. He has way better stats with the Eagles.
He's been with the Eagles for three seasons now. He was with the Titans for three seasons.
He is gonna be forgotten as a Tennessee Titan.
He is only gonna be thought of as a Philadelphia Eagle.
That is just the way that it is now.
And that's the way that it's gonna be.
And it's sad and it sucks because quite honestly,
A.J. Brown is in my top three favorite players
to ever watch on the team.
I just loved watching him play football.
It was incredible.
It's probably because we've been so starved for wide reciever.
And not only that we've been so starved
for great wide receiver play,
but all of the retirement home wide receiver experiences
that we've had, that like makes the pain even worse.
You know what I mean?
So maybe that's why I'm just so desperate for a sweet,
awesome, swaggy wide receiver that we can all love and that makes awesome plays that
other people wish they had. And you know, the plays that Hey J made, the Baltimore slant,
the catch on the sideline against Houston, the catch down the field against Houston in
the last game of the season season like in so many other plays
The Raiders 91 yarder I could go on and on I just loved AJ Brown so much
So call it bias to that era of Titans football if you want, that's fine
But get give me AJ Brown is the second best wide receiver in Tennessee Titans history three seasons only
185 catches, 2,995 yards, 24 touchdowns, and only one Pro Bowl appearance,
but I'm sorry.
AJ Brown was a way better player than Drew Bennett, for example.
Six years with the Titans, 273 catches, 4,000 yards, 25 touchdowns.
He had 25 touchdowns in six seasons.
AJ Brown had 24 and three. Like give me AJ Brown.
Like Derrick Henry. Derrick Henry has 20 more total touchdowns with the Titans. 93 than the 74 that Eddie George had.
Give me that. That's so many points. That's such a major impact. And I didn't mention in the Derrick Henry thing, He was held back, you know, by the Titans and and he needed to get his stuff together
Too, which he owes Eddie George for a little bit
But again, we're moving forward, but I'm taking AJ Brown Nate Washington six seasons 307 catches
4,500 yards 28 touchdowns
he probably goes over Drew Bennett quite honestly, but
those guys just weren't as impactful to
honestly, but those guys just weren't as impactful to the big seasons.
If we go the Superbowl run 2003, 2008, 2019, 2021, those are probably the best seasons in Titans history.
I would say if I had to just off the top of my head, I didn't make notes on that
and go back and research like I did for the players. But, you know, Drew Bennett and Nate Washington just weren't involved in enough
of that. Bennett was involved in 2004. He had an awesome year, but again, not one of
the top seasons. So got to take that into account. Who impacted winning more? It's AJ
Brown. But if I had to pick a third, I had to pick a third I guess I'll go
I guess I'll go with Drew Bennett over Nate Washington again more impactful seasons
although Nate Washington had a 74-1007 in 2011 that was pretty impressive pretty fun but
moving right along we go to tight end where I have, you know, I guess a bit more controversy.
Frank Wyczek is a legend and rest in peace. And it's sad to me that, you know, some of these players that we discuss have already left, left us, you know,
like we talked about with Steve McNair, which happened a long time ago.
And Frank Wyczek a couple of years now, um,
but Frank Wyczek is the obvious choice at tight end. Um,
nine years with the team, seven years with the Tennessee Titans,
but I'll include all of it, of course.
Two-time All-Pro, three-time Pro Bowler, 482 catches, 4,958 yards, 27 touchdowns
with the team. He is a clear choice.
But I got to tell you, I deviate here. And I go with Delaney Walker.
Seven years with the Titans. Three time Pro Bowler as well. Didn't get the all-Pro nods
because he was on bad football teams. Alright? And I know that that's the opposite argument of the
AJ Brown and the Derrick Henry thing. And I get it and call it what you want. Maybe I'm just biased to Delaney because he was brightness, you know, in the dark, quite honestly. But Delaney had 387 catches, 4,423 yards,
and 29 touchdowns. So more touchdowns, 100 less catches, of course, that's the two seasons
of difference, you know what I mean? Only 500 less yards, which he certainly would have got if he would have been healthy for the last two,
because the last two seasons he had with the Titans, Lenny Walker basically didn't do very much at all,
because he got hurt in the first game in 2018 when he broke his ankle.
What a terrible, the Miami massacre, man, him and Marcus, what a sad day.
Longest football game ever. And then when he came back in 2019, it was obvious
he just couldn't, you know, he couldn't play anymore.
It ruined his career.
So really two seasons, Delaney's production
came in five seasons.
He was super explosive, had that huge season.
Delaney Walker, if I'm making a starting Titans offense, I want, imagine Delaney Walker was steaming there.
Like that would have been such a huge, with the lack of talent at wide receiver for the Titans.
So you had Derek Mason, and just put him on the team. Derek Mason, and then Kevin Dyson, Frank Wychett, and then Delaney Walker on that, that's nasty. Okay? So, I know that it's a bit controversial and maybe it's biased to Delaney Walker being all we had for a little while.
But I'm going with Delaney Walker. I think he's a better football player than Frank Wycheck.
But of course, RIP to the legend, Frank Wycheck.
But it's time to talk about the offensive line.
And while the Titans have had quite a few good offensive linemen, I think it was tougher to put together certain spots than others, but offensive tackle certainly
wasn't a tough spot. Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
Doing my all time starting offense for the Tennessee Titans.
We have Steve McNair at quarterback. We have Derek Henry at running back, Lorenzo Neil at full back.
I'll throw that in as well. We have Derrick Mason and AJ Brown as the starting wide receivers
and Delaney Walker as the starting tight end.
Now we got to get to the offensive line and again, stacked at
offensive tackle, but some of the interior spots were a little bit
tough before we do want to thank you again for making locked on Titans.
Your first listen for your second listen, check out locked on NFL scouting

But starting at left tackle, this was tough, okay?
Because there are three, in my opinion, really good left tackles.
And look, I'm not paying attention to left tackle, right opinion, really good left tackles.
And look, I'm not paying attention to left tackle, right tackle,
because the best tackles the Titans have had are left tackles,
and they deserve to be on the list.
We're looking, you know, you want to go right tackle Jack Honklin?
You want to go Jack Honklin in the conversation?
I guess that would be something that you could do.
But the three left tackles are really where
David Stewart of course could put David Stewart and David Stewart's probably
fourth in my opinion on this list but I went with Michael Ruse at starting left
tackle ten years with the Titans 148 starts the dude always played had two
all-pro seasons in 2008-2009, blocking for
Chris Johnson.
This was a Chris Johnson-era greatness.
Now, he had a little bit, his first season, his rookie season, he played a little right
tackle, so maybe I could cheat and say that.
But I'm going with Michael Ruse there again.
Two-time all-pro, one one time pro bowl, 10 seasons,
best left tackle the Tennessee Titans have had in my opinion.
But number two, who the other tackle spot was going to be comes down to either Brad
Hopkins who just played forever for the Titans and was super consistent.
Now Hopkins never got the big time accolades, but super consistent. Taylor Luan though, three time Pro Bowler, nine years with the team.
And I know that Luan is a bit of a deficit figure because of his personality.
Like some people just don't like Taylor Luan because he's loud and boisterous and outgoing and he does the podcast and blah blah blah blah like
Brad Hopkins was with the organization for 13 years. He was with the Titans for nine years.
He basically played all the time, made two Pro Bowls. So that deserves credit. But Taylor Luan was a staple for the Derrick Henry season. Taylor Luan gave the Titans,
like with the Lainey Walker, like Taylor Luan gave the Titans some personality, gave the Titans some
national recognizability, and that still continues to this day. He still has that impact on the Titans. Taylor Luan made the Titans cooler. Okay? That's the matter of fact. And Luan had three Pro Bowl seasons and was a
part of the second best team in Titans history, the 2019 team. So with that in mind, I know that Hopkins was super consistent, deserves his credit, and it's very tough.
But I'm gonna go with Michael Ruse, and I'm gonna go with Taylor LeWan as my two starting tackles.
Now again, Brad Hopkins is right there if you want to put him third.
Fourth, I would probably go with David Stewart. Fifth, I'm probably going with Jack Conklin.
Sixth, Nicolas Petit-Ferrer. No, all jokes aside. But
seriously, and I'm hoping just while we're here having fun talking as friends, I'm hoping
J.C. Latham cracks that list, right? Right? Right? Right? Got to. Got to. But anyway,
let's move it to the interior. So we'll talk about guard. Look, one guard spot, Bruce Matthews.
Bruce Matthews is the best player in franchise history.
Like if you want to count all the Oilers and stuff,
I know Warren Moon, no, I'm sorry.
14 time Pro Bowler, seven time first team All-Pro,
Hall of Famer, Bruce Matthews is the best player
in the history of the organization,
no matter where you want to talk about location wise and
some people want to say that
Bruce Matthews shouldn't be included in like Tennessee Titans list, but he played five seasons in Tennessee
Had five Pro Bowls and three first-team all pros in Tennessee
That's enough for me and that that still makes him the best offensive lineman
in Tennessee Titans history, even in only five seasons. So Bruce Matthews starting guard spot.
The other guard spot though is difficult. The Titans haven't had a lot of stalwart guards,
quite honestly. Benji Olsen was with the team for 10 years. I guess you would give him a nod.
Very solid player.
But other than that, I mean, there's been a lot of failures at GoT,
quite honestly.
Quinn Spain and Chance Wormack, you know, Nate Davis. So to me, you could go Benji Olsen just for, you know, time of service.
But I went with Roger Saffold. Saffold made a Pro Bowl.
He was only with the team for three years from 2019 to 2021.
But that's the second best run of Titans football ever is 2019 to 2021.
And he was the second, third best offensive lineman on the team.
So blocking for Derek Henry's 2K season, the second best run of Tennessee Titans football of all time.
And a Pro Bowl appearance.
I went with Roger Saffold as the other starting guard.
Outside, I know that Saffold played left guard not right guard, but whatever he is the second best guard
So I'm going with him and then third obviously I'd go with Benji Olson, but and hopefully again while we're here
Peter Skowronski is on his way
He's on his way if he gets a second contract and he gets a couple of Pro Bowl appearances
Peter Skowronski is on his way, but at center
It was tough.
Kevin Mawai, one of the best centers of the last 25 years, spent four seasons with the Titans.
He was blocking for CJ2K.
Two pro bowl appearances, one all-pro appearance.
That's huge.
But I'm going with Ben Jones. Seven seasons with the team, came over as a free agent
from Houston and was a part of, like, if you guys are too young, you don't remember the down years
in the middle of the 2000 teens. It was a disaster. And Taylor Luan, and Ben Jones, and Wesley Woodyard, and Delaney Walker, and Marcus Mariota, and Demarco Murray, quite honestly, deserves to be in, and Kevin Byer, and Jerell Casey. Casey, like these people got this team back to winning.
And they became a team that won games,
went a playoff game.
And next thing you know, Super Bowl aspirations,
they're making a huge run two years later, number one seed.
I know they never got the ultimate goal,
but what an incredible run of football.
And to watch it build from being just garbage
in those early 2010 years coming out of the CJ 2k era the guys who built this thing back even
if all of them weren't around for the 2019 to 2021 run like they deserve that
credit and Ben Jones not only was there to build it back but as a free agent
came in and was a stalwart and was critically underrated
his entire career. He got one Pro Bowl appearance in 2021. Finally got what he deserved, but
he should have had many more before that. Ben Jones, super underrated player. Kevin
Mawai is the better all-time player, but for a Tennessee Titans career, give me Ben Jones.
So Ben Jones, Roger Saffold, Bruce Matthews, Michael
Ruse, Taylor Luan, those are my starting five offensive linemen for my all-time
Tennessee Titans roster on offense. Derek Mason, AJ Brown, Delaney Walker, Derek
Henry, Steve McNair, and Lorenzo Neil, of course. I'll throw you in there again.
That is my starting offense. Let me know your guys' starting offense.
Great discussion.
And again, tomorrow defense,
