Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Alontae Taylor CLARIFIES his ROLE in Robert Saleh's Defense Going Forward
Episode Date: March 19, 2026The Tennessee Titans have added nearly 20 new players to the roster over the past few weeks which creates questions about what role each player is expected to fill. There are big questions in the seco...ndary specifically with Alontae Taylor and Cor'Dale Flott, but both players clarified their projected roles on Wednesday when talking to the media and it sets a clear expectation of what we will see early on. On the defensive line, things get a little more complicated as plenty of the new additions like John Franklin-Myers and Solomon Thomas has versatility that allows them to line up in a variety of places, but that confusion is a plus for the Titans not a negative. On offense, things are more clearly defined for a guy like Wan'Dale Robinson who will spend the majority of his time in the slot. New Tennessee Titans cornerback Alante Taylor gave us the inside scoop on what role he's going to be playing in Robert Salas defense.
And I think it tells us a lot about what to expect from the Tennessee Titans secondary this season.
I'll explain on today's edition of Locked on Titan.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.

with a college basketball parley. Profit boost.
Head to fandle.com to get started on today's show.
We're going to talk about what roles all of the Tennessee Titans' new players are going to be playing
and some of them told us themselves like Alante Taylor and Cordell Flott in the secondary.
and honestly, I find it very, very interesting.
Before we dive into what I think all of the roles are going to be for these new players,
do want to thank you for making Locked-on Titans,
your first listen each and every day.

If you aren't an Everydayer, you need to be one.
The NFL Draft is just about five weeks away.
We're going to have another mock draft Monday coming up as I start next week.
The Titans are going to be back out on the football field.
Before you know it, I mean offseason activities start in April for the Tennessee Titans veterans.
You want to stay as up to date, as entertained, as informed as a Tennessee Titans fan could possibly be.
Make sure you stay locked in with the number one Tennessee Titans podcast in the world.
Locked on Titans.
But with that being said again, Alante Taylor just outright said it.
Now, Alante Taylor played a lot in the slot for the new.
Orleans Saints.
And when I broke down his film, I was looking at the tape and I was like,
they got to play this guy in the slot.
Like, yes, he can play on the outside.
He played on the outside in New Orleans base defenses.
I certainly think that he could be an outside cornerback.
He's got the size to do it at 6 foot 1, 200 pounds.
Like, he's a big enough guy and a physical enough player to play on the outside.
And quite honestly, I think he's much better in zone than he is in man coverage.
He reads things, his IQ, his understanding, great zone player.
But in the slot, he's able to blitz.
He's able to play against the run.
He's able to use his physicality.
So I watched the tape on Alante Taylor and I was like,
I don't know.
I thought they signed him initially to play on the boundary.
But now after watching, I think he might play in the slot.
But Alante Taylor himself even told us what his role is going to be.
And again, I think it tells us a ton of.
about what the Titans plan to do and who plans to play where.
And Alante Taylor told us he's going to play on the outside.
He said that is the plan for what he's going to do.
And again, I was a little bit shocked by that personally
that that is the plan for Alante Taylor,
but he is telling us.
He outright explained it himself.
I mean, he said that he learned the slot position on the fly
after getting an opportunity to do that in his second year in New Orleans.
but in Tennessee, he'll play outside.
Now, he did say, but he could slide back in if that's what he needs to do.
But he said he'll play outside.
The plan when he was signed as a free agent to a three-year $60 million contract
is for him to play outside cornerback.
And quite honestly, that's where the Tennessee Titans needed help the most.
Looking at what they had, they had Marcus Harris.
They had Kevin Winston.
They needed help on the outside where they had no outside corners
at all. Micah Robinson, sure, practice squad level player there.
So, you look at Alante Taylor saying that he's going to play outside,
and then Cordell Flott, the other big-time free agent cornerback signing that the Titans had,
said he plans to play field corner. What does that mean? Okay, so in the NFL,
typically you're not in the dead center of the field. When they put the ball down for the offense,
It's typically not in the middle of the field.
It's typically on a hash.
You're either on the right hash, you're on the left hash.
And what a lot of people do is a lot of defenses,
they have not a corner that plays left or right,
not a corner that follows one guy across the formation
wherever he goes, a shadow of a wide receiver.
What teams typically do is
they have a field corner and a boundary corner.
So if you're on the right hash mark, that means that on the right side,
you're closer to the boundary.
On the left side, there's more field to cover.
Well, Cordell Flott is a smoother mover, a better athlete probably than Alante Taylor
in terms of just speed, running around, taking advantage.
So the boundary corner typically needs to be more physical.
They're going to be on the line of scrimmage.
They are going to press the X wide receiver.
That's what you're typically going to see.
The field corner is typically going to play off coverage.
They're not going to be pressed because there's so much room on the field side that motion and different kinds of routes.
You don't want your field corner to play tight all the time, most of the time.
So, with Cordell Flott saying,
I'm the field corner
and then Alante Taylor's saying
I'm going to play on the outside
now we know that
Alante Taylor is going to be the press
physical boundary corner
and Cordell Flott
is going to be the smaller
more athletic more quick
field corner that plays off
coverage and if you go look at
Robert Salah's defense on tape
that's typically what he
employs as well so it matches
and it's funny a lot of you guys know
Tehran Davenport from ESPN.
Me and TD are pretty cool.
And what I like about Tehran, which separates him from others who cover the team,
Toronto knows football.
Like, he knows coverages, positions, plays, scheme.
So I like talking to Tehran because he actually knows the game of football,
not just how to be a journalist and cover the Titans and write articles.
And like, and I actually message Tehran not too.
long ago about Cordell Flott and we both agreed he's probably going to play field corner
in this defense and then literally a week later he confirmed it himself in his meeting with
because a bunch of the free agents met with media on Wednesday.
So it's like this was the expectation, this makes sense, this should be the plan.
Now what that does to the rest of the secondary becomes the very interesting part as well.
because in my opinion,
and something that I have been talking about
since the end of the season,
I've been talking about it since during the season.
Because some of you guys,
when Jacksonville really ate up Kevin Winston,
Jacksonville put a hurt on Kevin Winston
when he paid in the big splot.
A lot of you guys were like,
why is DeNorne Wilson you've been Kevin Winston in the slot?
Because that's where he's going to be best in the NFL.
As a big nickel.
Think about Jalen Petrie.
Think about Nikki Monroe
think about Kyle Hamilton.
Think about what Caleb Downs is about to do.
Caleb Downs is going to be drafted by a team
and he's going to play big nickel
with three safety looks.
The NFL is doing more of that now
because teams are running the football
out of heavy tight end personnel.
And if you have a safety who's big
and physical enough to basically function
as another linebacker while also being a defensive back
that can play the pass,
you have the ability to cancel out the advantage
that heavy tight end personnel gives an offense.
And you can still play two.
high deep safeties, but basically have three linebackers on the field because you have a safety
who could play the slot position and be physical. Jalen Ramsey made a career out of playing the star
position, which is what we're talking about. So if we know that Alante Taylor is playing the boundary
corner spot and we know that Cordell Flott is playing the field corner outside corner spot,
then that opens up the door for Kevin Winst
to play that early down nickel.
Now, when it's passing down time,
Kevin Winston's going to go back to play in safety,
or he's going to play dime linebacker,
and it's going to be him and Cedric Gray
or whoever else the Titans draft
to be their passing down linebacker.
Because Cedric Gray right now, not great in coverage.
Incredible in the run game, but not great in coverage.
So he needs to take steps in that area,
and I think that Robert Sala can get him to take steps in that area.
But nonetheless,
Remember back, and I'm going to keep telling you this,
because a lot of people don't notice little adjustments like this.
But in 2021, the Tennessee Titans number one seed season,
Elijah Molden, who ended up being a safety,
because he was mostly a safety,
he's not fast enough to play man coverage and cornerback at cornerback.
But Elijah Molden played slot cornerback on early downs,
on early downs, first down.
Second and short.
Stuff like, well, it depends on the down and distance.
Mike Rable would do different things.
But he would be the early down slot cornerback.
Because he was a good blitzer.
He was a good tackler.
He was physical against the run.
And then when it was time for the other team to pass,
they would bring in Buster Screen.
Remember Buster Screen?
That guy's journey after football.
Crazy.
Go look that of.
We don't have time for that.
Not important, but whoa, wow, crazy.
Anyways, I think the Titans under Robert Sala
will do something very similar to that.
They will have Kevin Winston play the early down nickel
where he can blitz, he can play linebacker,
he can fit against the run,
he can use his length, his physicality, his ferocity
that we've seen from him in college and last year.
He can play that role.
But do I want Kevin Winston playing man coverage on slot-wide receivers?
No, I don't.
So then Kevin Winston goes to dime linebacker.
He goes back to be a normal safety in the too high looks,
and then the Titans bring in someone else to be the slot cornerback
and play man coverage or play zone on passing downs.
And who could that be, Marcus Harris.
Marcus Harris, you look at some of the advanced analytics.
Marcus Harris was as sticky as they come
and the small opportunities he got last year
as a slot cornerback.
He's not quite big enough to be on the outside.
I think he could back up Cordell Flot as the field corner,
but Marcus Harris as the passing down slot
with Kevin Winston as the early down slot
with Alante Taylor and Cordell Flot on the outside
and Amonnie Hooker and Kevin Winston as the deep safeties
or Amani Hooker and Tony Adams, who the Titans just signed,
who is a pure free safety type to take over the back end,
let Ammani Hooker use his eyes, play over the middle of the field
to make turnovers and things like that.
I think that is how the Tennessee Titan secondary works out.
And I think Taylor and Flot confirming their roles only confirms that to me.
So Alante Taylor is the boundary outside corner.
Cordell Flott as the field outside corner.
Winston and Harris rotating based on the down and the distance at slot
with Winston and Hooker as the starting safeties
and then Tony Adams is the third safety.
That's what I expect.
And then Josh Williams, who the Titans signed,
can be a special teams player
and a backup boundary corner at 6 foot 3, 33-inch arms.
And then Jerich Reed, who the Titans also brought back,
is just a special teams guy in safety 5, in my opinion,
because the Titans need to draft another safety to groom behind Tony.
Adams in the NFL draft.
But with that being said, now we move to the rest of the defense
where I think we already have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
Today's episode is brought to you by five-hour energy.
Guys, welcome to the five-hour energy flavor draft.
18 different flavors to choose from.
New options like confetti craze, fruity rainbow, cotton candy,
there's something for everyone.
The board is set.
The flavors are ready.
And I've got my number one pick for the five.
our energy flavor draft. And of course, I am going with grape. You get that bold Concord grape
flavor similar to grape juice or candy. It's a nice soft, rounded sweetness, smooth, almost syrup-like
in the fruit profile, consistent, straightforward taste, and that classic purple candy style finish.
If I had to go with the sleeper, I'm going with the peach mango. You get that ripe peach
flavor on the first sip. The mango adds a tropical death. It's a smooth, rounded fruit profile,
slightly richer mouth feel. And then some of the other.
citrus flavors. It's a nice, balanced tropical blend.
Listen, you need to go and find your new favorite flavor of five-hour energy shots.
It's available at five-hour energy.com or on Amazon.
Today's episode's also brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook.
College basketball is non-stop, especially this time of year.
You get big games, tight spreads, momentum swings every single night.
From early tip-offs to late-night West Coast shootouts, there's always action on the board.
and now Fandle is giving you a way to turn that energy
into even bigger potential wins
with a college basketball parlay profit boost.
You can build any college hoops parlay that you want,
rivalry games, ranked matchups, whatever fits your read.
You can use spreads, totals, player props,
mix them all together to match how you see the slate playing out,
then apply your profit boost and instantly bump up the potential payout.
You can go safe, you can go bold,
you can ride with the team that you've been following all season.
It's your parlay, your style, and now with more upside behind it.
Head to fandle.com to get started.
That's fandle.com.
Once again, Fandle, play your game.
Let's cap all for continue today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast,
talking about what roles the Tennessee Titans new players are going to play with this team.
We talked about the secondary, which I think there were some very, very interesting quotes
that point us in the direction that we need to go.
But now we do need to look at the rest of the defense.
And I think the defensive line is where there is the most potential for confusion.
And quite honestly, I think that's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing that we don't have a complete idea
of what we're going to see on defense
because I think that is going to confuse other offenses.
And quite frankly, depending on what the offense does
and how the Titans see them and they're scouting
that will inform how the Titans play on the defensive line.
So follow me here.
There are some things that I do know, okay?
Power edge rusher.
Jermaine Johnson and Femiola DeGio are going to be your starting edge rushers on first down.
The very first snap of defense that the Titans play this year,
Femio dejo and Jermaine Johnson will be your starting edge rushers on first down.
They will be the edge rushers opposite of each other. Why? Because they're both big,
strong, with long arms, and can defend the run. They will set the edge. They are going to be
great run defenders. So I just want to put a bullet here. Let's stop the car and roll down the
window and enjoy the scenery for a second here. But I'm seeing a lot of people
when I say
I think the Titans still go edge rusher at number four
I think David Bailey is who they would want
because they need a speed rusher
a lot of people then say to me
oh you don't believe in Femiola Dasia
and
I get this critique a lot that I
you know talk down to the audience
I don't mean to talk down
but at some point
I have to say
I think that's really dumb and short-sighted.
I think a lot of fans only think about the year in front of them.
You're only thinking about 2026.
So when I say to you,
I think the Titans need a speed rusher.
I think they'll take edge.
Edge is still a massive need.
The response to that is,
oh, you don't believe in Femiolidasia.
when that is a 2026 only mindset.
What about 2027?
What about 2028?
What about 2029?
Maybe you only care about the instant gratification
of the Titans being good this year.
So every move the Titans make has to satisfy your need for it to matter this year.
And of course they should get some benefit this year.
from moves that they make.
I'm not saying that they shouldn't.
But what I'm saying is sometimes, and more often than not,
general managers make moves with the future in mind.
The coach needs to worry about, the player needs to worry about today.
The coach needs to worry about tomorrow.
The general manager needs to worry about years down the road.
That is the general rule of,
of thumb. When Mike Borgonzi makes picks, signs free agents, does different things,
there has to be an understanding of what the roster will look like for years to come.
When you plan out dinner and you do your budget for the grocery, you don't just do what you're
eating for dinner tonight. You make a weekly schedule. We're going to have this for dinner.
We're going to have this for dinner. We're going to have this for dinner.
So you don't just go to the grocery store, buy what you're having for dinner tonight,
and then have no idea what to do next.
It's called a plan.
And believe it or not, general managers have a multi-year plan.
Jermaine Johnson is on the last year of his contract.
And listen, I want Jermaine Johnson to work out.
I hope that he plays well.
Looks like he did before he blew his Achilles
and the Titans extend him during the season.
That would be great.
But the reality is
Germain Johnson was not as good last year
when he came back from his Achilles.
He is on the last year of his rookie contract
and will be a free agent after the season.
It would not be wise
for the Titans to extend Germain Johnson
before they see him on the field.
He has to prove it this year.
So what if,
and I know nobody wants to acknowledge this right now because hope springs eternal,
but what if Jermaine Johnson doesn't play well?
What if he's never the same after blowing his Achilles?
What if he is just an okay player?
What if he leaves in free agency?
Because he's really not worth resigning.
What if he leaves in free agency and he's not worth resigning
because Femiola-Dajio firmly takes his place during the season with his own improvement.
Saying that I think the Titans still should take an edge rusher at 4
and saying that I think they need a starting speed rusher to rush the passer
doesn't mean that I don't believe in Femiola-Dazio.
Quite frankly, what it really means is,
it means I'm not certain if Jermaine Johnson will ever get back to being the player that he was in 20-23.
And the reality is next season, Femi and David Bailey would be your starting edge rushers.
And then would it be stupid to take an edge rusher?
No.
So people acting like the edge rush is not a need anymore because they traded for Germain Johnson
that's silly.
They traded for Germain Johnson because they don't know.
if they can trust Femi.
And they're going to draft another edge rusher early
because they still need two edge rushers next year.
Whether Femi works out,
Jermaine Johnson works out, either doesn't.
Like, they don't have anything definitive.
You cannot definitively say
that Femiola-Dajio is a starting edge-rusher
on all three downs right now.
He's got to show it as a pass-rusher.
And you cannot definitively say that Jermaine Johnson is a long-term solution.
You can't say either of those.
So the Titans don't know if they have a true three-down edge rusher at all right now.
It is still a massive need.
But with that in mind, again, Germain and Femi will be your starting edge rushers on the early downs,
but then they are going to rotate as the power edge rushers.
and Jermaine Johnson could even play a little bit inside every now and then.
Robert Sala will move him around.
I don't think he needs to do it a lot,
but he can function on twists and stunts from the inside.
So those are the only two other than Jordan Elliott,
who the Titans signed,
who we know exactly what they're going to do
because Jordan Elliott is going to be an interior defensive lineman
on early downs.
And then he'll be off the field on passing downs.
And then we talk about what the Titans do on passing downs.
and John Franklin Myers
going to be inside on passing downs.
Jeffrey Simmons going to be inside on passing downs.
Now, both of those guys, if the Titans play a heavy,
heavy offensive front,
a team that uses two or three tight ends consistently nonstop,
well, John Franklin Myers and Jeffrey Simmons
can both play the edge
on early run-downs against heavy packages.
And then they go inside when it's time to pass rush.
Because them against guards is just an athletic mismatch
and they're going to eat them alive.
Okay?
But outside of those things, it's hard to know.
Solomon Thomas, another guy who plays mostly inside,
but could play some heavy defensive end in a pinch.
Jacob Martin is a speed rusher.
He's not going to play inside.
He's going to come in and rotate.
And that's the thing.
Jacob Martin is your only speed rusher right now.
You need a starting speed rusher to go with him.
And then those two will rotate.
And then Femmy and Germain rotate.
And now you have four edge rushers, two speed, two power,
and you rotate them in and out.
And Malik Herring is a camp invite who's going to battle with Jalen Harrell
to see who is the edge five for the roster.
but like I think the versatility of everybody
and not knowing exactly week to week
play to play drive to drive
not knowing how the Titans are going to deploy the defensive line
actually helps the Titans confuse offenses
so we know what we know
but we know what we don't know
and offenses won't know that either
and I think that's critical but let's talk about the signings on offense
and what role they're going to play
on this team. Do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by Robin Hood.

But with that being said,
Look at the offensive side of the ball.
We start with Wondell Robinson, and again, I think there's,
excuse me, much less confusion,
or much less, I don't want to say, interest because I'm interested in all of it,
but there isn't as much up and down, could be this, could be that,
with the roles on offense.
Wondale Robinson is going to play in the slot.
He's going to play in the slot.
There's a slot-wide receiver.
Okay, that's what he's going to do.
and he could play a little bit on the outside.
Certainly he did it for New York last year
when they suffered injuries at the wide receiver position.
But at the end of the day, he's a slot guy.
They need to use them in the slot.
And when you have Calvin Ridley, you have Chim D.K.
You have Elyke-Ir Manor guys who can play on the outside.
There's just no need for Wondale Robinson to take snaps outside.
So to me, it seems pretty clear.
He's going to be a slot guy.
He knows it.
everyone knows it. That's where he's at his best.
And I'm perfectly fine with that.
So I don't need to drum up any fake controversy or anything for this one.
It's clear what's going to happen.
And Daniel Bellinger, to me, is tight end 1B.
Him and Gunner Helm are going to rotate that tight end one spot.
I think that Gunner Helm is the tight end one by the end of the year, like clear.
I think he takes a step forward.
But at the end of the day, Daniel Bellinger is good enough to do everything that Gunnor Helm is going to be asked to do.
is he going to do it as well as Gunner Helm?
I don't think so.
I think Gunner Helm's a better option.
But Daniel Bellinger is tight end 1B more than tight end 2.
Like they're both going to be used consistently out on the field.
So I think that's obvious.
Mitch Trubisky, quarterback 2.
Not quarterback 3.
Will Levis is going to be traded.
Okay?
He's quarterback 2.
Mitch Trubisky is going to be your backup quarterback.
So again, not a lot of confusion with those guys.
clear what their role is going to be.
Now, when we get to the offensive line,
that's when it's like,
I don't know.
And we talked about this a lot yesterday,
so I don't need to beat the dead horse here,
but, uh, Oshid Slotman,
I hope that he's the backup center.
I certainly hope so.
Right now, though,
looks like he could be the starting center.
And I'm becoming more convinced
that the Titans are going to ride with him right now
and then go into the drive.
and hope to get another center that they can compete with Austin Schlotman.
That would be my expectation right now.
So, unfortunate, but I think he is the starting center.
That would be his role right now.
Hopefully, eventually, eventually, he's the backup.
Now, Cordell Volson, I just cannot believe that he's going to be slated to be the starting right guard.
There's no way that I can buy that.
He's not a good player.
Okay, he can be a backup.
He's got a lot of starting experience, but just no way.
Just no way that my heart will allow me to think that Cordell Volson is going to be the starting guard.
I just can't do it.
So interior offensive line, too, is what I, where Austin Slotman is two,
and Cordell Volson is guard too.
You know what I mean?
You have Pete, hopefully Kevin Zitler back,
and then Volson can back up both of those because he is a good run blocker.
All right.
Austin Declis.
I think he's swing tackle.
I think he's number five.
Number five.
Now I'm mixing it all up.
He's number six.
OT3.
I hope that Brendan Crenshaw Dixon can beat him out.
Maybe they draft an offensive tackle
to take over for Dan Moore after the year
who becomes OT3 for the time being.
I would be fine with that.
But right now it looks like Austin Declos is an OT3, the swing tackle, the backup tackle,
and that is quite dangerous, in my opinion.
But finally, Kyler Granson, he is a special teams coverage guy,
and probably tight end three or four.
I think tight end four by the time it's all said and done.
But a special teams guy, and I do think that Brian Daibble will want to have four tight ends on the roster
with the way he deploys tight ends.
So that'll be my expectation.
And then Tommy Townsend is puner one, baby.
No real debate with that, right?
At the end of the day.
Julius Chestnut, I'll throw him in here.
He is a campbody fighting for a practice squad spot.
RB 4, 3 at best.
He's just a camp body who they trust and want to keep around.
He's pretty good on special teams.
He got better at the end of the year.
So something to consider there.
But that's going to do it for me today, folks.
Again, like I told you, my birthday is on Sunday.
You want to leave me a birthday present?
Go give me a five-star review on Apple Podcast.
Go join the Locked-on Titans Every Day or Club with the link down below in the description.
Something like that.
You know, it's my birthday.
Give you guys free content all year round.
Give the boy a little bit something back.
But the reason I'm telling you that is
probably not going to do a bonus episode on Friday.
I'm going to go have lunch with my father,
hang out with some friends and family, stuff like that.
But you never know.
If something big happens,
You know that I'm going to be here to break it down with you guys.
But with that being said, that's going to do it for me today, folks.
As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland.
And this was Locked on Titans.
