Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Alontae Taylor SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT on Cornerback Duties: "FULL TIME CORNER"
Episode Date: June 25, 2026The Tennessee Titans paid Alontae Taylor $20 million a year when they signed him in free agency and they didn't do so because they planned to play him in the slot often. Taylor has said publicly and h...is contract also says he will play on the outside. If that wasn't enough, Taylor announced himself this week that he is a 'Full Time Corner' even further establishing the plan for his usage despite recent uncertainty due to misread Robert Saleh comments. Taylor will certainly start on the outside for the Titans defense, but what about the rest of the unit? Tyler gives his projected starters while also discussing where the Titans could make a trade or signing to bolster the roster. Finally, Week 1 seems far away now, but it will be here before you know it and the New York Jets will be more of a formidable unit than some are expecting. I think it's been clear for some time that Alante Taylor is going to play outside cornerback in the Tennessee Titans defense.
But if you didn't believe me, maybe you'll believe Alante Taylor.
I'll tell you what he had to say this week on today's edition of Locked on Titans.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast network, your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland Titans fans.

We are going to be answering some of your mail bad questions.
We're going to talk about why there are some concerns about facing the New York Jets
in week one.
We're going to talk about what the starters on defense will look like now
and at the end of the regular season.
But we got to start with the conversation around Alante Taylor
that's kind of popped up this week.
And I've talked about it on the squad show before,
mentioned it a little bit on the show,
but wanted to spend some time here
because there seems to be some confusion out there
as to what Alante Taylor's role
is actually going to be in the Tennessee Titans defense.
Quite honestly, I am confused why there is confusing.
about Alante Taylor's role in the Tennessee Titans defense.
There are so many different things that you could point to
and so many things that I will point to
to show that it's been clear for quite a while
that he's going to play on the outside.
He's not really going to be a nickel cornerback.
I know that earlier this week or at mandatory minicamp,
I guess is the best way to put it.
Robert Salah said he's going to be a full-time cornerback
and a part-time nickel where he used to be a full-time nickel
and a part-time cornerback.
And you may hear a cornerback and think of all of them,
but they're using nickel, slot, and corner
as two different positions.
So when you say Alante Taylor is a corner,
you don't just mean, yeah, he plays cornerback.
No, he's saying I'm a corner, not a slot player.
I'm not a nickel.
I'm a corner.
Okay?
And they're talking about those as two different positions
within the defense.
So earlier at mandatory minicamp, Robert Salas said that.
And he said, you know, part-time nickel.
And now everybody, not everybody, but some people are taking that as,
oh, he's going to play more nickel than we thought.
And I just don't think that that's the case.
I just don't think that's true.
I think that's a misread of Robert Salas comments to say that Alante Taylor
Taylor is going to play inside a substantial amount.
Like, he's just saying that in New Orleans he did play in the slot some.
Here, he's not going to play in the slot as much.
Now look, if there's an injury, you know,
if the Titans drafted the number one cornerback in the draft next year,
and he's a big, tall, outside corner.
Then they could keep him outside and put Alante Taylor in the slot.
Future years position changes or injuries that happen this year
that force people into different spots.
Maybe the Titans are more comfortable with their depth on the outside.
So if Marcus Harris got hurt, rather than going with a backup slot,
which who even is the backup slot right now?
And we'll talk about the depth on the secondary here in a second.
but rather than going with a backup slot and keeping Taylor and a flat on the outside,
maybe the best move is to bring in somebody as a backup on the outside
and move Alante Taylor into the slot.
I'm not saying that those things won't happen.
But that is not the plan.
It is not in the plan at all for him to even slide in at all.
I think that if Robert Sala had his way this year and everybody stayed healthy,
Alante Taylor would never see a snap in the slot.
they didn't again
when he was signed
he said
they want me to play on the outside
Robert Salah said
we want him to play on the outside
they've talked about how he's changing his technique
he's got to work on his technique because he's
playing a different position at
corner than he was at nickel
they have talked about all of that publicly
during the all-season workouts
and they paid a Lonte Taylor
$20 million per year
okay that is not
slot cornerback money.
That is big time outside cornerback money.
So the money, the public comments,
and then if you didn't believe that,
Alante Taylor this week,
and again, I don't want to feel like I'm throwing shade
or I'm dissing anybody here.
I'm not.
This is a good conversation to have,
looking into comments,
what are people saying it?
But there's a certain group of people
who have been running with this Alante Taylor thing all week
and they made a tweet about it,
and Alante Taylor replied to it
and said in caps, full-time corner.
He's a full-time corner.
And again, I say, I explained earlier,
what that will mean to the Titans
because you would think,
hey, a slot cornerback is still a cornerback, right?
That's a cornerback, so he's just saying he's a cornerback.
No, he is telling you,
I am full-time outside.
You're focusing on the wrong part
the quote. Not the part-time nickel, the full-time
cornerback. That is what Alante Taylor's job is now.
I personally, when Alante Taylor
was first signed before we heard from him, before we knew anything
about that, I was like, okay, he could be an excellent nickel
in Robert Salah's defense. Robert Salah talked about
how the nickel position can unlock the defense. Alante Taylor,
physical, great, it makes sense. He could do some of that
for Robert Salah. I thought so.
But again, since that moment,
since that moment, everything they have said publicly,
everything we've heard, everything you can read into,
everything, including Alante Taylor himself,
has said, I'm an outside corner.
I'm playing corner, not nickel.
I'm a full-time corner.
So if we don't have enough evidence, again,
if there's injuries, future acquisitions,
I'm not saying he can never play nickel.
He's a good nickel if they want him to do it.
I'm not against that.
I'm just telling you, right now the plan
is not as part-time nickel
as people are making it out to be.
He is going to play on the outside.
I don't think you should expect to see Alante Taylor
play more than 10 snacks in the slot this year,
even though he's capable and I wouldn't be against it
if they eventually made that kind of change.
But it's not coming right now.
He's a quarterback now, not a nickel.
So keep that in mind.
Now, we danced on the conversation a second ago.
What if there's an injury?
And the Titans' cornerback depth is a major concern.
And Mark King, oh, sorry, Jamie.
Jamie asked a question about Alante Taylor and I just jumped right in.
Shout out Jamie.
But Mark King said, who gets the cornerback depth spots?
Will there be a free agent edition?
We'll talk about free agency in just a second.
But looking at the depth spots again,
who is the backup nickel?
And if we just talked about Alante Taylor
and Alante Taylor's talking about him playing on the outside,
the plan isn't for him to be the backup nickel.
Now, they're in a position right now
where if Marcus Harris were to get hurt at any point in the season,
how could they not move Alante Taylor into the inside?
Who else is going to do it?
But I think the depth positions,
you're definitely getting Josh Williams.
Big, long corner came from,
from Kansas City. Special teams is why he's going to make it.
He's big and fast, and he'll play on special teams,
and you can develop him as an outside corner.
Sure.
I think Michael Robinson,
I know that he's been getting dunked on by Carnell Tate,
but the reaction to that could very well be,
well, Carnell Tate is awesome.
So, yeah, our fifth string cornerback,
our fourth string cornerback is getting dunked on by Carnell Tate.
What I think, tell me what four,
or fifth string cornerback in the NFL isn't getting dunked on by some of the best wide receivers in the NFL.
Like, what are we supposed to do about that?
You can't expect your fourth or fifth cornerback to stop a guy like Carnell Tate.
And if I'm on the other side of it, we should expect Carnell Tate to beat any fourth or fifth cornerback.
He should dominate any fourth or fifth cornerback in the NFL, right?
That's why you take a guy in the top five because he can do that.
So I'm not going to say that Micah Robinson
is a waste on the roster
because he's had some bad practices
against Cornell Tate, our top five pick first round.
So I think it's going to be Josh Williams.
I think it's going to be Micah Robinson.
And quite honestly, unless the Titans don't,
unless the Titans add a veteran free agent of some kind
or add another young player as roster's churn
throughout training camp,
if the Titans don't add another viable slot cornerback,
I don't think the Titans are going to keep more than five cornerbacks.
I think they'd rather keep safeties or linebackers or defensive linemen.
You have Alante and Flot, Harris,
Josh Williams, and Micah Robinson.
I don't see a cornerback that is worthy at this point.
Maybe Lance McCutcheon makes a big move.
He's had some moments.
Jalen McClain.
Murray out of Tennessee maybe, but we're talking about, you know,
undrafted free agent rookie level guys and who could really know at that point.
So the secondary is definitely a concern.
The depth position positions are really where things get shaky.
But with that being said, let's continue answering your mailbag questions
in today's edition of Lock on Titans.
Do you want to let you know that today's episode is brought to you by Odu.

podcast again answering your guys
as mail bag questions.
Got a good mix here.
YouTube, the everydayer club,
Twitter as well.
You guys always send awesome questions.
Get to the heart of the real issues.
Here, we talked about the cornerback position,
Alante Taylor's role in the defense.
But now I got a question here from Joshua Wolitz
and he says,
who's the starting defense right now
and what changes could you see
by the end of the season?
Well, right now I think you would have
Germaine Johnson and Keldrick Folk
as the starting defensive ends.
You would have Jeffrey Simmons
and John Franklin Myers
as the starting interior defensive linemen.
You would have
Cody Barton,
Cedric Gray,
at linebacker
with Alante Taylor, Cordell Flott,
Marcus Harris,
and then Kevin Winston
and Tony Adams.
In the back end, who is the second starting safety?
It's probably Kevin Winston and Amani Hooker, right? Probably.
But I am telling you folks, Ammoni Hooker played very poorly last year.
It was bad.
Okay?
So if Robert Sala were to say,
I think I'm going to go with a guy in Tony Adams who I know can do a little bit of everything
who knows my system,
who I trust a little bit more than a Monty Hooker.
You've got to go with Kevin Winston, right?
You can't not have Kevin Winston
on the field with his explosiveness, his potential,
all of that.
There's no way that you don't go Kevin Winston.
But that's a safety position.
That is interesting.
Who's going to be out there and their base nickel,
their base 4-3 looks?
That's something to watch.
That is something to watch.
Very interesting.
Good question.
It makes you think there.
But I think that's what you could call the starting defense now.
who will be the starters by week 18,
I surely think that Anthony Hill
will be a starter at linebacker
by the end of the season.
But other than that,
I mean, would it be,
would it be cool if Femi
were to overtake
Germain Johnson?
Would that be cool?
Yes, that would be great.
I would love to see that happen.
But right now as we stand,
can we say that that's going to happen
for Femiola Dejo?
Like, no.
I have no reason whatsoever to believe that Femiole dejo is going to be better than
Jermaine Johnson at any point this season.
I can hope that, but I can't know that.
So right now I can't say that.
Anthony Hill would be the only significant change, in my opinion,
that we'll really see.
And honestly, I could be wrong about that.
If I'm wrong, Anthony Hill could be starting by week one.
We have talked about it so much, guys.
Cody Barton does not fit Robert Salas scheme.
That's not what Robert Salah.
is looking for.
So if Anthony Hill,
who was already calling the defense
in OTAs in minicamp
and looking comfortable doing that,
if Anthony Hill is ahead
of the chains when it comes to the playbook,
they drafted him because they liked him
as a big time communicator.
If Anthony Hill can do all of that,
then he'll probably overtake Cody Barton
by week one. Quite honestly,
I just, you know, I can't bank on that right now.
Robert Salah might prefer to have a veteran.
but I don't think that's crazy to think.
I think it may even be likely.
And if it happens, then I don't expect to see any changes by week 18.
If Anthony Hill is already starting in week one,
then by the time week 18 rolls around,
honestly, I hope I say this,
I see the same exact guys because it means the Titans were healthy enough
to finish with the same starting defense,
which is what we all have to be hoping for.
So that's where I'm at on that.
Now, Paul asked the question,
is there any messaging that you see?
right now that you think is smoke.
And he brought up how Robert Sala
hyped up to Vondre sweat.
To me, to my question at the combine,
literally the day before they traded him
to the New York Jets.
Maybe the big nickel stuff.
Again, they haven't said who's going to play
the big nickel out of the safety position,
whether it's Tony Adams,
Amani Hooker, Kevin Winston.
I think it could be Kevin Winston.
With that, the love that they're showing
to Marcus Harris could be smoke
for where they potentially want to add a free agent.
really know why behind the scenes.
They could be wait, but maybe there's a free agent that they want to add at a certain
position and they're hyping up the guy that they currently have on the roster
to make other teams think that they don't want that player to keep his market
quiet or keep his price low.
I mean, we're really doing mental gymnastics at that point.
I have the tinfoil hat on fully when we're talking about something like that.
But maybe I don't see anything at this point.
We're not in the prime acquisition period of the NFL calendar,
so I don't think there's as much smoke and roster, this and that right now
as there is, you know, like at the combine before free agency in the draft and stuff like that.
So no real big smoke, Paul, in my opinion.
David Yusuf says,
are the Titans more or less likely to do a trade or to sign somebody
here in this preseason area?
Well, it depends on what kind of signing your talk about.
about, David, because when you say a trade or a signing, people think big time stuff.
People think, you know, oh, they're going to bring in Joey Bosa.
Will they bring in other options, blah, blah, blah, this and more, you know.
And maybe they do that, but I think it's much more likely that it's smaller moves.
maybe they do a little player for player swap where, you know,
they trade Jalen Harrell for a cornerback.
Or, you know, they trade Cordell Vosson for running back.
You know, it sounds dumb.
I don't really have it all plotted out.
I think they could make, they're going to make small moves.
They're going to turn the back of the roster.
They're going to sign guys that you've never heard of.
They're going to keep working on the back end until they get
through all their options, and maybe they find a diamond and rough, find somebody who they like.
So they're going to make a bunch of signings and maybe even a player for player trade, something like that.
But it's not going to be on the scale that fans think of when they think of a move like that.
You're going to be, you know, wanting something way bigger than what they end up doing.
I think it's much more likely to happen after the first preseason game, though,
because then you've had training camp, you've had the first preseason game and teams,
I'm kind of giving up on that guy.
we really need a little bit more right there.
I think that after that first preseason game
is where you would see something happen
or right before training camp starts.
Like if one of the big, like Kevin Zitler
is going to come back or something,
it'll be right before training camp starts,
in my opinion.
Although I don't think that Kevin Zitler's coming back
just for the record there.
Caleb says, what free agent would you target?
What do you think Cody Barton's trade value is?
I think Cody Barton's trade value is nothing.
I don't think they could get anything in a trade for Cody Barton.
And then free aid, Kenny Moore is still the one that I'm looking at.
I would still be open to Kevin Zitler coming back.
I'd feel a lot better about things Kevin Zitler came back.
I like him a lot better than Cordell Vulsin or Jackson Slater or Fernando Carmona.
So, and outside of that, are there any, not really?
I mean, I've talked about Joey Bosa, Edge, but it sounds like he's going to retire.
Sounds like he's not going to.
There's a report saying that he's probably done playing football
so we can give up on the Joey Bosa hopes or anything like that,
which I think the Titans are kind of settled right now.
But Kenny Moore at slot cornerback, he's played in Gus Bradley's system before.
There's a veteran need there to battle with Marcus Harris.
And then, yeah, bring back Kevin Zitler.
Those are the only...
And trades...
Apex player. I also play Apex. Apex player. If you're talking about Apex Legends,
I love Apex. Cossack Main. Let's go. Gas Daddy. But
I could see the Titans maybe going for another edge rusher.
If the Titans were going to pull off a big trade, maybe like Max Crosby,
something like that. But I don't think that they need to trade for an interior
offensive lineman. I don't think, you know, they need to trade for a slot corner.
anything like that.
I just don't see the Titans giving up assets
to make a big time trade to have trade targets.
I just don't think that's where they're at right now
and they're not going to be there.
Unless the Titans go berserk in the regular season
and they want to go all in with some trade
before the deadline for Max Crosby or something like that,
I can't see any kind of big time trade for the Titans anytime soon.
But I'm here for it.
Sure, shock me, Mike Borganzi.
I'm ready.
But with that being said,
more bailback questions.
coming your guys' way.
Big concerns with the Jets matchup.
I think the Jets are going to be more competitive
than you guys are giving them credit for.

But first question in our final segment here
comes from Maine gamer.
He says, what are your concerns with the week one matchup
against the New York Jets?
Look, the Jets have good weapons on offense.
it's not going to be easy for the Titan secondary.
If the Titan secondary isn't as good as we hope that it can be
and it's a struggle, the Jets can take advantage.
Garrett Wilson is a heck of a player.
A.D. Mitchell has been lighting up Jets OTAs in mandatory minicamp.
He's been one of the stars of their all-season program.
They drafted Omar Cooper, Kenyon Sadiq,
to go with Mason Taylor.
They have a really good offensive line with Olu Fashtonu and Armam Mbo,
book in tackles.
They have Joe Tipman on the inside.
They have a good offensive front.
They do.
So if Gino Smith is protected with good weapons
and he looks like the guy from Seattle
rather than the guy from the Raiders,
that's going to be a difficult matchup for the Titans defense.
Now, the one thing that gives me hope is
that this is a strength-on-strength battle
where the Jets' offense is going to be better
than the Jets' defense.
they have more talent on offense than they do on defense.
But the Titans defense is going to be better than the Titans' offense, in my opinion.
The Titans defense should be fantastic.
The best part about the Jets is they have a good offensive line.
Best part about the Titans, they have a great defensive line.
So I am concerned because I think the Jets are going to be more competitive
than people are giving them credit for.
The Titans are just as bad of a football team as the Jets over the last couple of years.
so let's not act like the Titans are on a different level
just because we want them to be.
So the Titans can absolutely lose that game
and the Jets have good enough talent on both sides of the ball
and give the Titans problems.
But the thing that gives me most hope is, again,
it's strength on strength.
And when I look at the Jets defense
versus the Titans' offense,
I have some faith that the Titans' offense
can outperform in that matchup
and ultimately lead them to a win because of it.
But with that being said,
question number two.
What would you rather?
This comes from Cam Ward MVP.
What would you rather?
Five or six wins and you keep Brian Dable a second year.
Or 10 or 11 wins and you lose Brian Dable.
That's an excellent question.
Just fun, interesting.
Good question.
Give me 10 or 11 wins, man.
I would rather deal with the consequences of success
than feel comfortable in failure.
That's a bar, bro.
I'm telling you, man,
if you would put me back in the Roman days,
all right, I would have been like a philosophizer
you guys would talk about today.
What a bar right there.
I'd rather deal with the consequences of success
than the comfortability of failure.
It's that simple.
Give me 10 or 11 wins, no question.
Now, the other part of the question
from Cam Ward MVP was
9 and 7,
does seven to nine wins, does Daibald stay?
I do think
I do think of the Titans
don't make the playoffs.
Daibble stays for a second year.
But if the Titans make the playoffs
after winning three games and back-to-back seasons,
it's because the offense went crazy with the defense.
And Brian Daibble is getting a head coaching job.
And he wants one.
He's not going to be happy
staying in an offensive coordinator under Robert Salah.
Not a chance.
He's going to immediately go take a head coaching job.
even go to college or something because he wants to be a head coach if he doesn't get a good
opportunity. So I don't think Dable is going to stay around at all if he has the chance to go.
Next question was from Andrew, who's going to make the biggest impact of the second-year players?
What stats do you expect for the defensive line?
Well, I mean, I hope that it's Cam Ward, right?
If it's not Cam Ward, then that's unfortunate.
Outside of Cam Ward, I will say Gunner Helm, I think.
But, well, Chim DK, sure, because of the special teams.
So he could win games with special teams and be a wide receiver.
It's probably Chim DK if it's not Cam Ward.
Hope it's like Kevin Winston, though.
Wouldn't that be awesome?
Kevin Winston was that good where that he is the answer.
Outside of Cam Ward, stats for the D-line.
Andrew talked about like the rotation.
You know what I mean?
like it's going to be hard for guys to get stats on the road.
But in theory, this is an efficiency conversation, Andrew,
because it's like, yeah, they may play less stats,
or they may play less snaps.
But if they're better and more efficient and effective
on the snaps that they do play,
shouldn't it create a positive result
or at least a net neutral result, you would think?
So I think if Keldrick Falk has five sacks,
Simmons has 10,
John Franklin Myers has six or seven,
Germaine Johnson has six or seven, Femi has three or four.
You know, we're talking about pretty good output from that group at that point.
Question from Bryson here.
Do you think that the fans impact players mental health or their performance on the field?
Some players, yes.
I think, listen, the mental health thing with professional athletes is just like in your
life. It doesn't matter what job you have with the mental health stuff.
It's like, if it's going to bother you, it's going to bother you.
If it's not going to bother you, it's not going to bother you.
I have buddies who just truly do not care about any drama,
what people got to say about them.
You know people like that who they really just, they don't care.
They're unbothered by stuff. They don't care.
And then you know people who are.
They take stuff personally.
They're always in little beefs and tiffs and dramas.
And, you know, they care what people say.
And they're in fights at work.
And, you know, on Facebook, they're always fighting with people.
You know, they're just people handle stuff different.
So there are players who, when fans are talking crap about them online,
they're in their burner account, arguing with people, mad, defending themselves.
It bothers them.
They're in a bad mood.
And then there are players who really don't care about that stuff.
They really just don't care and don't look.
I think there are more players who care than players who don't.
But both of those people exist.
So does it affect players?
Certainly.
Does it affect every player the same?
No, but that's true in regular life,
not just in the NFL or football or anything like that.
And then he had a fun question of,
if you had to switch every player's position,
what would it be?
Well, I would just switch the offensive lineman
to a different offensive line position,
switch the defensive line to a different defensive line position.
I'd put linebackers on the defensive line or defensive line at linebacker.
If I had to, I'd move safeties and corners and swap them out.
I don't know where I'd put Cam Ward.
I don't, kicker, I guess.
I'd put running backs at wide receiver, wide receivers at tight end, tight end,
and offensive line.
You know, the simple switches that would happen if I had to do it for every player.
That's the only logical thing to do right there.
And then I think the final question that I have here comes from,
It's me on Twitter know it's you.
But he says, does Lockdowne encourage certain formats or uniformity?
And are you solely responsible for the ideas and talking points?
So Locked On just had their 10th anniversary.
It was an awesome time period.
It's been a great run for Locked On, excited for more decades ahead.
I've been here for seven seasons now.
I'm going to be my eighth season this year, which is crazy to say.
But look, if you watch any Locked On show, you're going to notice the same format.
segments, two ad breaks.
That is not much different than every cable television network television show you've ever watched.
They have three segments and basically two commercial breaks in between.
It's not very uncommon as a format.
So that is the format.
I have to do three segments per show.
I have to have two commercial breaks in between.
But outside of that, for the most part, no.
I mean, we have crossover Thursday.
which I got to do the crossover episode.
I can't just go rogue and not do it with the guy from the other team
or the girl from the other team
or the people, the group from the other team
because some people have duos for their show, you know.
So there are certain things where it's like,
yeah, I got to do a crossover episode every Thursday with the other host.
I got to do the show in this certain format.
I got to, you know, do certain advertisements that are required
because that's how I make money off the show.
That's how it's a business, you know?
So, yeah, there are certain things.
But like all of the topics that I pick throughout the week,
Are we going to talk defense?
Are we going to talk offense?
Deptchar, this rumor, that rumor, this injury, this scot.
I pick all of that.
I am the content creation.
I'm the idea creation.
I am the creative hub of everything that you see on my show.
And quite frankly, on Lockedon NFL too.
Locked on doesn't say like talk about this, this day, talk and make sure you, no,
they don't do any of that.
I run my own ship with guidance from the Motherland.
It's basically how I would describe it.
And I love that, though.
I wouldn't want.
to be told what topics to do and things like I've had that happen in other parts of my career
like when I was writing and stuff where I was told I got to write about this, write about that
and I just I can't do it that way man I got I gotta go where where my heart takes me as a content creator
I won't be in it as much and you guys would be able to tell so with that being said though that is
going to do it for me today that's going to do it for this week of Locked on Titans thank you all so much
for tuning in I know we're into the summer break but I got a lot of stuff playing for you guys as we
head towards training camp. So with that being said, that's going to do it for me today, folks.
As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
