Episode Date: January 28, 2024The Tennessee Titans hired Brian Callahan as the head coach, but now they need to assemble the best coaching staff possible and there are particular candidates they must focus on. On offense, the Tita...ns have requested two interviews for offensive coordinators and Eric Studesville from the Miami Dolphins is the perfect choice. On Defense, the Titans have requested Dennard Wilson from the Baltimore Ravens and he has an excellent track record that pairs perfect with Callahan. Finally, if Brian cannot recruit his father Bill Callahan to coach the offensive line, a former Tennessee Titans in Mike Munchak could be a perfect substitute for Brian's father.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. We are building the perfect coaching staff for Brian Callahan.
On today's show, I'm going to go over my top tier candidates for offensive coordinator,
for defensive coordinator, for special teams coordinator, talk about some position coaches
as well.
We know about the big philosophical opinions now on Brian Callahan's hire.
It's time to dive in to the nitty gritty decisions.
Before I get into it, thank you guys for making the Locked on Titans podcast
your first listen each and every day.

And we're talking coaching staff right now, but we got draft preview, free agency preview,
cap management, roster cuts, so much to talk about this offseason and one of the biggest
offseasons in Tennessee Titans history.
Make sure you're with me every single day and shout out to my everydayers out there.
Throw a thumbs up on the video as well.
Show's always free.
All I ask for in return is the press of a button. And play along with me down below.
Let me know who your top picks are as we go through each of these spots.
But we're going to start with offensive coordinator.
And it's worth noting that the Titans fired Tim Kelly over the weekend.
Now, that was an expected thing, in my opinion.
You bring in an offensive-minded head coach.
Why would he keep the offensive coordinator from the previous regime?
But either way, for some finality there, Tim Kelly was fired.
As for who should replace him as offensive coordinator,
these are the top names that I like.
Number one on my list and probably my top candidate at this time
is Eric Studisville.
Now, the Titans requested an interview with Studisville over the weekend for their offensive coordinator position. Who is Eric Studisville. Now, the Titans requested an interview with Studisville over the weekend
for their offensive coordinator position.
Who is Eric Studisville?
Well, number one right now, he is the Miami Dolphins running back coach
and their associate head coach.
He has a specialty with running backs.
He's been working with running backs for a long time.
He's a run game coordinator as well,
and I think that pairs perfectly with Brian Callahan.
It's something that I've been talking about throughout the process here
is Callahan is, of course, a passing game specialist.
He's a guy who's been focused on quarterbacks in the passing game.
So you bring in a guy like Studisville who has experience working
with Brian Callahan from their time together with the Denver Broncos
on that Super Bowl championship team, and one thing I want to point out
about Studisville is he's 56 years
old. And I think that Brian Callahan
was smart when he talked about having a variety
of different coaches on his coaching
staff. Brian Callahan is a young man.
He's 39 years old. So having
a guy who not only is a wise
and experienced coach who could be a great teacher
of Brian Callahan's offense, but also
someone with a run game specialty,
I think that balances out Brian Callahan's offense, but also someone with a run game specialty, I think that balances out Brian Callahan's skills very well,
and I think that would make a ton of sense as a hire.
A name that I've been talking about all along that the Titans interviewed
for a head coaching position is Thomas Brown.
Thomas Brown was the offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers,
and look, I know that you could look at the Panthers last year and say,
you don't want anything to do with that.
But at the end of the day, Thomas Brown came from the Los Angeles Rams. He was handpicked by Sean McVay. He was the assistant head coach for the Rams when they went to. But again, that run game specialty for Thomas Brown
makes a ton of sense to pair with the pass game specialty
of Brian Callahan, in my opinion.
So those are my top two names.
Now, if I had to pick, I'm going to go with Studisville
from the Miami Dolphins there.
I like the experience that he's going to bring.
I like the fact that there's a previous connection there
where they both work together in Denver,
and there's some familiarity there with each other. I think that would make a ton of sense, but Thomas
Brown, obviously my number two choice. Do want to throw in a couple other options
here. The Titans did request an interview with Nick Holes. Nick Holes is currently
the passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
39 years old, a guy with a lot of experience with wide receivers. He was a high school
teammate of Brian Callahan
at De La Salle High School in California.
Also a guy who was hired by Bill Callahan, Brian's dad,
when Bill Callahan was the coach at Nebraska.
Now, I know that some of you guys are going to be like,
wait, Trevor Lawrence underperformed, blah, blah, blah.
But you go look at the Jacksonville Jaguars stats
on the passing side of things.
You look at EPA, you look at success rate, stuff like that,
they were not a bad passing offense.
They just underperformed from what people were expecting.
So stealing a guy away from a division rival
and getting a lot of intel on Jacksonville
with a guy who has a connection with Callahan,
that does make some sense, but I'm not as excited about Nick Holes
as I am the other two candidates that we talked about. And then finally, I have to throw this statement here. Liam Cohen. Liam Cohen is
currently the offensive coordinator for the Kentucky Wildcats at the college level. Obviously,
he worked with Will Levis during Will Levis' best college season in 2021, so a lot of people are
aware of that. Another young guy, 38 years old. He could come back to the NFL. But one thing about Cohen
that I really like is he studied under Sean McVay. He was a Los Angeles Rams coach. So the system that
he uses is that Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan system, which is exactly what Brian Callahan is going to
be bringing over to the Tennessee Titans that he got from Zach Taylor as well in Cincinnati.
So I think there's a lot of familiarity there.
There's a lot of overlap there in terms of scheme
and philosophical standpoints of what you want from the offense.
Now, Liam Cohen is currently an offensive coordinator for Kentucky.
Maybe he wants to hold out there, stay in the college game.
He did come back to the NFL in 2022, then went back to college in 2023.
So maybe he's more comfortable there.
But having the opportunity to come back, work with Will Levis,
and jump back to the NFL level to set him up to maybe continue
to move up that coaching ladder, that would make a ton of sense.
So the Titans did request an interview again with Nick Holes from the Jaguars
with Eric Studisville from the Dolphins,
and they had head coaching interviews with Thomas Brown,
which as we saw with Matt LaFleur, that could turn into a coordinator position. Again, my top candidates are Eric Studisville
at number one, Thomas Brown at number two, but if I had to choose and we're building Brian
Callahan's perfect staff, I'm going to go with Eric Studisville because I like that age and that
wisdom and that ability to teach the offense. He's not a guy who's going to be overly concerned
with moving up the ladder. He's going to be a's going to be overly concerned with moving up the ladder.
He's going to be a guy who's much more concerned
with doing a great job in his position.
It would be a promotion from what he's doing
with the Dolphins as a running back coach.
And with that run game specialty,
I think it would make a ton of sense
to pair with the pass game focus of Brian Callahan.
So talk about offensive coordinator.
I'm rocking with Eric Studisville,
but we got to talk about the defensive coordinator. And there is one name that I'm very,
very excited about, but we're going to get into special teams coordinator. We're going to get
into some position coaches I'm interested in. Let me know down below who your top offensive
coordinator candidate would be out of the names that we talked about. Before we get into the rest of the coaching staff though, do want to let you guys know that today's episode

We are going to continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast,
putting together the perfect coaching staff for Brian Callahan.
We just talked about the offensive coordinator positions.
Again, I'm encouraging you all to play along with me down below.
Let me know who you would like out of the candidates that we go over here.
But we're going to get into defensive coordinators,
and there is one name that I am focused on above all else.
Before I get into it, thank you guys again for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen each and every day.
Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free.
Make sure you get subscribed, stay subscribed. It's your team every day. But with that being said, we talk about defensive coordinators.
There is one person, as of this recording on Sunday afternoon,
who the Titans have requested a defensive coordinator interview with,
and it is Denard Wilson.
Now, as you can see if you're watching on YouTube,
Denard Wilson has learned from some of the best defensive minds in the NFL.
Jeff Fisher, when he was with the Rams, he spent time with Todd Bowles as well, among
others, like Mike McDonald, who is a head coaching candidate from the Baltimore Ravens,
also spent time under Jonathan Gannon in Philadelphia, who ended up being a good head coach, or not
good head coach, but a head coach, and really actually had a pretty positive season with
the Cardinals, considering the injury to Kyler Murray and all that, but we'll adjudicate the Cardinals season at a different time. But Denard Wilson
is the number one defensive coordinator candidate for me. Number one, the number one thing that
appeals to me is his ability in the passing game. You guys know, and I've been talking about it.
Part of the Titans modernization is instead of focusing on running the ball and stopping the run like it's varsity blues out here, we need to focus on passing the ball and stopping the pass because this is the modern NFL in 2024. in 2023 or in 2022 in pass defense. And then he went over to the Baltimore Ravens
and poof, number one pass defense in the NFL this year,
the Baltimore Ravens.
Now, do we give all of that credit to Denard Wilson?
No, we don't.
Of course, like I said, Jonathan Gannon,
like I said, Mike McDonald,
great coaches who are going to be head coaches most likely.
And we know Gannon was.
Mike McDonald, I think, is getting that Seattle job.
But Denard Wilson is an up-and-coming guy
who has innovative ideas about what to do
against some of the best passing offenses in the NFL.
And again, I remind you,
one thing that Brian Callahan said at his interview
that stood out to me almost more than anything else
was that he wants to focus on defensive coordinators
who give him trouble.
Guys who are hard to game plan against,
defenses that keep him up at night,
that are hard to adjust to, all of that.
And looking at Philadelphia's defense in 2022
and then the Ravens' defense in 2023,
Denard Wilson absolutely is a part of that.
He's a rising candidate.
He is a younger guy.
Maybe he's too young this and that,
but you got to get him now because if you don't, they're going to move on to head coaching positions
and other defensive coordinator positions before you know it. So Denard Wilson, absolutely my top
candidate for the Titans defensive coordinator position, but there are other guys who make sense.
James Boettcher. All right, Boettcher right now is the linebacker coach for the Cincinnati Bengals, and they've gotten great linebacker play recently
out of Logan Wilson, out of Jermaine Pratt.
Some really good stuff from guys who
you maybe wouldn't recognize their name
until they started having success
with the Cincinnati Bengals,
but Boettcher is a former defensive coordinator.
If you're watching on YouTube,
you can see his picture now from his time
being the defensive coordinator with the New York Giants.
It wasn't the best time, obviously.
He got fired by the Giants when they switched to a new head coach,
and those things happen.
But Boettcher is another experienced guy.
And again, we talk about variety.
We talk about diversity on the coaching staff,
and when people hear the diversity word, they think only with race.
And so I'm talking about age as well, experience as well in diversity.
I want my coaching staff to be like a basketball team.
I don't want everybody to be a six-foot point guard who can pass.
I want some tall guys.
I want some wings with range.
I want some big guys with rebounding prowess.
I want not only a good passing guard, I want a good shooting guard as well
that can score.
You want variety, and I think Boettcher is a guy with a ton of experience,
with former experience as a defensive play caller, with a relationship with Brian Callahan from their time together with the Cincinnati Bengals. I think that James Betcher
would make a ton of sense. Would I be as rizzed up about him as I am Denard Wilson? Absolutely not,
okay? Absolutely not, but I think Betcher does make a ton of sense. And again, he may not be my top tier candidate,
but he would be a candidate that makes a ton of sense for the Titans.
Another name that a lot of people are going to like is Wink Martindale.
Wink Martindale is a very, very popular name.
One of the best defensive coordinators of my lifetime in the NFL
with the Baltimore Ravens, was with the Giants last year,
did not get along with Brian Dable, the head coach there.
Brian Dable is a very spicy guy, so I don't think it's that big of a shock.
To me, it reminds me of Mike Vrabel and Dean Pease.
A very experienced, successful, well-known defensive coordinator
going up against a new head coach who is very headstrong,
my way or the highway type guy, and the personalities just didn't mesh.
It doesn't mean that Wink Martindale isn't still a top-tier defensive coordinator.
Didn't mean that Dean Pease wasn't still a great defensive coordinator.
It just didn't work out personality-wise.
So Wink Martindale, known for his pressure schemes,
known for his blitz packages,
a very difficult guy to game plan against
when your Cincinnati Bengals going against the Ravens multiple times
when Wink was there as the DC.
That would make a lot of sense, and if that's somebody you like,
I couldn't blame you there.
Me personally, I don't want to go with that defensive scheme.
I don't like that Brian Flores, Wink Martindale style
where it's just blitz you nonstop because I think at the end of the day
you need very specific players to do that,
and I don't think it gives you a lot of versatility.
Brian Callahan said he wanted a defense that had versatility,
that had the ability to adjust to the offense. Wink Martindale isn't that kind of defense. He's a, we're going to line up and do
what we do and good luck stopping it type of guy. So that's why I'm not quite as interested in
Martindale, but again, a name that I wouldn't, you know, be upset about. I guess there's a
difference between being excited about it and not being disappointed by it. And I think that's where
I'm at with Wink Martindale. Some other names that I just want to drop here for you guys.
That may be a little under the radar.
Maybe you haven't heard of.
Because they're position coaches around the NFL.
Two guys from the Los Angeles Rams.
Obviously they're going to be ties there with Brian Callahan.
Aubrey Pleasant.
Who is the passing game specialist on the defensive side of the ball.
For the Los Angeles Rams.
He was also on that 2013 Washington coaching staff
that everybody raves about.
And then Chris Shula, yes, part of the Shula family,
linebacker coach right now for the Los Angeles Rams.
I think either of those guys would make a ton of sense
as an up-and-coming guy that you could slide in into that role.
A good defense under Raheem Morris,
who just got hired as a defensive coach.
I think it would be smart to follow that lineage.
Also, for the Buffalo Bills,
a team that the Bengals have had good battles against.
And I bring up the Rams.
The Bengals have had their struggles
against the Los Angeles Rams
while Brian Callahan was there.
So you look at teams that have given
the Bengals offense some troubles
or made it difficult,
and the Rams are clearly one of those teams.
Buffalo could clearly be considered one of those teams.
You look at Bobby Babich, who's the linebacker coach for the Buffalo Bills.
And then John Butler, who's the defensive back coach
and passing game coordinator for the Buffalo Bills defense.
I think those are some under the radar names
that could make a lot of sense for defensive coordinator.
And then finally, I want to throw in one last name.
I don't think it's likely, but it's a guy who will get a big opportunity soon. And then finally, I want to throw in one last name. I don't think it's likely,
but it's a guy who will get a big opportunity soon,
and it's Jim Leonard.
Jim Leonard, former safety in the NFL,
coached on the college level with Wisconsin, Illinois,
and the Big Ten.
He is widely considered one of the best up-and-coming
defensive minds, whether it be college or NFL.
He was not a defensive coordinator or a coach last year.
He was a, well, I won't, don't say coach,
but he was an analyst in 2023.
So I think he's a guy who,
if he wants a real opportunity to jump into the NFL,
a young up-and-coming guy who's very well respected
in college and NFL ranks for his ability to adjust,
his versatility on defense.
I think Jim Leonard can make a lot of sense.
That's a dark horse candidate.
But for me, again, Denard Wilson. Denard Wilson from
the Baltimore Ravens. Passing game specialist. Defensive back guy. I think he would
make a ton of sense for the Titans as their defensive coordinator. But we got to talk about special
teams. We got to talk about some position coaches. Wide receiver.
Quarterback. Offensive line. I'm going to get into all of that. Let me know your top
tier defensive coordinator candidate down below. But we're going to get into the rest of the coaching
staff as well here in just a moment before we do though do want to let you guys know that today's
episode is brought to you by better help all right sometimes we all need the opportunity to get

Talk about getting something off your chest.
I don't understand people who want the Baltimore Ravens
to win the Super Bowl, want them to move forward.
I know that you may be sick of the Kansas City Chiefs,
but I'm to Brady level with Patrick Mahomes.
I don't want to see
somebody else winning Super Bowls. If Mahomes wins another one, then Mahomes wins another one. We
know he's great, but I certainly don't want the Ravens to win one. But I do want to say this.
All right. There are bigger problems in life than sports related stuff. So I don't mean to

Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast going over my perfect coaching staff for Brian Callahan. We talked about offensive coordinator where Eric Studisville is my number one target there.
We talked about defensive coordinator where Denard Wilson is my number one top coordinator option there.
Again, we get an older, experienced coach at OC,
We get an older, experienced coach at OC,
a young, innovative coach at DC with diverse opinions and a variety of range.
And I want to keep that going
when we dive into special teams coordinator.
Some position coaches on offense as well.
Before we get into it,
do want to thank you guys for making Locked On Titans
your first listen each and every day.
Also want to let you guys know
that Locked On has launched the first ever

But with that being said,
talk about the other open coordinator position.
For me, you look at special teams,
and there are three names that I'm interested in.
Number one at the top of the list for me is Chris Tabor.
All right.
Tabor was special teams coordinator for the Carolina Panthers.
He then moved into their interim head coaching position
after Frank Reich got fired.
And look, again, like I said with Thomas Brown,
you could look at Tabor and say,
oh, well, you know, he was with the Panthers.
They were terrible.
No way he's any good.
But he got given the interim head coaching position
on one of the worst rosters in the NFL.
And again, like I said with Thomas Brown,
just because the team did bad
does not mean that all of the coaches on the staff are bad.
Perfect example.
Washington coaching staff, 2013.
They went like 3-13
and had Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Mike McDaniel, Aubrey Pleasant.
There are other names as well.
I don't know why I'm blanking on the other names that were a part of it.
But either way, it just shows, it's just an example that
just because a team is bad doesn't mean that every coach on the staff is bad. That's
not how this works, okay? Just because you have a bad boss or you have bad employees doesn't mean
that everybody is bad. You know, it's not like one bad apple doesn't make the entire orchard
terrible. You know what I'm saying? Cut out the bad and keep going. But Tabor has a ton of
experience in the NFL. Again, I want diversity here. Tabor is 52 years old. He's a guy who can provide experience,
a guy who's a good teacher,
who has experience on the offensive side of the ball,
experience on special teams as well,
been a special teams coordinator for a long time in the NFL.
I think he would pair perfectly with the Tennessee Titans.
So Chris Tabor would be my number one candidate
for special teams coordinator.
Moving on though, the two guys who took over for Craig Aukerman for the Titans.
Again, back to this philosophy, not every coach on a coaching staff is a bad coach
just because the team was bad.
After Craig Aukerman was fired, Tom Quinn,
longtime special teams coordinator for the Giants,
was elevated to be the special teams coordinator for the Titans.
I think if Brian Callahan wanted to bring him back,
another guy with a ton of experience,
that would make a lot of sense.
Also, if you want to go with another young guy,
Anthony Levine.
All right, so Anthony Levine is a former football player
for the Baltimore Ravens,
known as the special teams dynamo.
You probably remember Anthony Levine
if you're from a certain age,
but he has been training with the Ravens for a few years
as a special teams coordinator.
And in 2023, Mike Vrabel hired him
as an assistant special teams coordinator for the Titans.
Yes, he is an incredibly young guy.
Yes, he is not incredibly experienced,
but he is considered one of the rising special teams coaches in the NFL.
And if you get, you know, an experienced group in the coaching staff,
you could take a chance on some of these young, hot coordinator options.
And Anthony Levine is going to be a special teams coordinator one day for an NFL team.
You can either pass on him and go with an experienced guy like Tabor
that would make sense,
or you can invest in a young coach
who may grow to be one of the best special teams coordinators in the NFL.
So for me, I would be perfectly fine
if they took a shot on Anthony Levine.
That would make a ton on Anthony Levine.
That would make a ton of sense for me.
But again, my top option is Chris Tabor. So on offense, Eric Studisville.
On defense, Denard Wilson.
On special teams, Chris Tabor.
Those are my top options for the coordinator positions for Brian Callahan's staff.
But there are other positions too.
Now, I'm not going to go through every single position,
linebacker coach, D-line coach, edge coach, all that stuff.
But there are some names at some of these positions,
especially on offense, that make a ton of sense for me.
Number one, of course, Bill Callahan as offensive line coach
and assistant head coach for Brian Callahan.
Brian talked about that in his press conference,
but he didn't say much because that would be tampering.
He said he's under contract elsewhere,
but there are a lot of people in Cleveland who think that Bill Callahan will come over.
And Joe Batonio, offensive lineman for the Cleveland Browns,
even talked about that recently at a Cleveland sports event.
Like, hey, you want to go coach with your son, we got to understand that.
That's a special thing. So hopefully he's able to bring over his dad as the
offensive line coach, Bill Callahan, one of the best offensive line coaches ever.
But even if not, Mike Munchak, former Tennessee
Titan, former Tennessee Titan head coach, also known as one of the best offensive
line coaches ever, was recently reported as a guy who wants to get back into coaching and wants
to come back to Nashville.
He even changed his profile picture on Facebook to him wearing his Oilers jersey.
So clearly, there is some interest there in coming back and getting back in the fold with
the Titans and reestablishing that relationship.
And I think that would be great not only from a coaching perspective, but for a franchise
relationship perspective with one of your better players all time. So if it's not Bill Callahan, Mike Munchak, and there's a connection there. Mike Munchak tried to hire Bill Callahan in 2011 away from the Jets. The interview was blocked, but clearly Munchak and the Callahan family have some ties there that make a ton of sense. If not Bill Callahan or Mike Munchak, Tom Cable, former head coach,
spent time with the Raiders.
Obviously, there's the Raiders connection
with Brian Callahan.
Cable is also an offensive line guy
and an experienced guy
who could come in and provide that wisdom
and that head coaching experience
to Brian Callahan, who's a younger guy.
So I think, like Callahan said
in his opening press conference,
having a balance, having a balance,
having a variety, having diversity in the coaching staff would make a ton of sense.
Some other names I'm looking at for position coaches on the offensive side of the ball,
Brad Cagthorpe is currently the assistant quarterback coach for the Cincinnati Bengals.
I think making him the quarterback coach would make a ton of sense for the Titans. That's a promotion, so you can make that happen. There's obviously familiarity there, and you want that
message that Brian Callahan is sending. You want that to really be hit home in the quarterback
room, so having a guy who's delivered the message before would make a ton of sense. There are two
Kubiaks. Brian Callahan under Kubiak in Denver Super Bowl team.
Clint Kubiak and Clay Kubiak are currently offensive assistants
or quality control guys for the San Francisco 49ers.
Bringing them over as a position coach on offense would make some sense.
Jake Peets is currently the passing game coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams.
Bringing him over as a quarterback coach would make sense.
Kyle Schumer, obviously his father, Bill Schumer,
was a head coach in the NFL.
So you have that connection there.
He's a Bills quality control coach right now.
Bring him over as an offensive assistant.
That would make sense.
And then finally, Sanjay Lau was a wide receiver coach
for the Seattle Seahawks who DK Metcalf,
Tyler Lockett,
even Jackson Smith and Jigwa this year.
Jake Bobo had a good year.
I think Sanjay Lau, who is with Shane Waldron in Washington,
who is available right now as a wide receiver coach with the Titans,
I think that would make a ton of sense as well.
But again, let me know down below who you think are the top candidates and who you want on this coaching staff.
That is going to do it for me today, folks. I'm going to be back with you guys tomorrow as we get more news. We got to talk about roster cuts, who to bring back, so much
going on. As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
