Episode Date: January 23, 2024

The Tennessee Titans and Brian Callahan are a PERFECT FIT. Callahan's experience makes him ideally suited to help the Titans and it was clear the Titans knew it all along. Next, some were worried abou...t Callahan's ability to call plays, but someone who isn't is his former boss Zac Taylor. Go over Taylor's recent quotes that show why Callahan should be perfectly fine calling the plays and it more than qualified to take that next step. Finally, Jake Liscow from Locked On Bengals joins the show to give his thoughts on Callahan's impact on the Bengals and who he is as a football mind, offense builder and as a person.Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitansFollow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPodSubscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videosSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Jase MedicalEmpower yourself when you purchase a Jase Case, providing you with a personal supply of 5 antibiotics that treat 50+ infections. Starting point is 00:00:00 Brian Callahan was a perfect fit to be the Tennessee Titans head coach. I'll explain why on today's edition of the Locked On Titans podcast. Let's get it. Starting point is 00:00:44 I am your host, Tyler Rowland. Titans fans, today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast is brought to you by PrizePix. The easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports. Go to prizepix.com slash locked on NFL. Use the code locked on NFL, all lowercase for a first deposit match up to $100. We are going to talk about Brian Callahan's history, why he is the perfect fit for the Tennessee Titans. Also talk about why the Tennessee Titans
Starting point is 00:01:10 did everything they could to keep Brian Callahan in the building. Also, Brian Callahan will call plays. I'll go over why I think that is perfectly fine. And finally, we'll get a Bengals view of Brian Callahan with a little help from my guy Jake Lisco over at Locked on Bengals.
Starting point is 00:01:25 A lot to get into. Before we do, I do want to thank you guys for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen each and every day. Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free. Make sure you get subscribed, stay subscribed. It's your team every day here on the Locked on Titans podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Shout out to my everydayers out there. Couldn't do it without you. And if you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one. On tomorrow's show, I'm going to go over my perfect coaching staff under Brian Callahan for the Titans. Make sure that you don't miss that. But with that being said, yesterday's show, you guys caught my instant reaction. Obviously, I was very excited,
Starting point is 00:02:12 and you guys were very excited as well. Thank you all so much for the reaction, for the support, all of that. What a great day it was yesterday, breaking down that hire, but as you dive into more of Brian Callahan's history, you start to learn more about who he is. I'm only more excited today, and honestly, what makes me even more excited than learning about Brian Callahan is learning about how the Titans felt about Brian Callahan. This really stood out to me. Brian Callahan, his flight to Tennessee for his interview got canceled due to inclement weather.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Amy Adams Strunk sent the private jet. She literally sent the PJ to go get her man. That's how important Brian Callahan was to the Titans. That's how highly the Titans thought of Brian Callahan as a candidate. And we got evidence of that from an article by Paul Daner Jr. of The Athletic. He said this in his article, the Tennessee Titans sent the plane. Would Titans brass send the plane for any stranded candidate? Maybe, but they sent one for Callahan, one of just three candidates to receive a second interview. And it landed a pretty clear message of interest.
Starting point is 00:03:29 Just over 24 hours later, there was no gray area left in the message. The Titans didn't let Callahan leave the building for interviews in Carolina and in Atlanta. He was the target, had been for a while. Welcome to Tennessee. I absolutely love that the Titans knew he was the perfect candidate for them and were going to do everything they needed to do to secure their man. And why would they work so hard to get Brian Callahan in the building? Well, it's obvious. We talked about it a little
Starting point is 00:04:00 bit yesterday, but I mean, he's age 39 right now, so a young coach that can grow with a young team. He's obviously the son of Bill Callahan. So a child raised in the NFL. You talk about when he finally got into playing football himself. He was a part of a historic football program at De La Salle High School in California. He is UCLA educated, but then in 2010, he was an offensive assistant for the Denver Broncos, a an offensive assistant for the Denver Broncos, a quality control coach for the Denver Broncos, made his way all the way up to a position assistant for the Broncos, working with quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:04:34 And speaking of quarterbacks, he worked directly with Peyton Manning in his 2013 season where he threw for 5,400 yards and 55 touchdowns, record-breaking season at the time. He worked with Peyton Manning in 2015 when the Broncos won the Super Bowl. I had somebody in my comments this week say, well, what has Brian Callahan ever won? Well, I mean, he was a part of a Super Bowl winning coaching staff, so that's a little something, right? After he moved from the Broncos after that year with the Super Bowl win,
Starting point is 00:05:04 he went to be the quarterback coach for the Detroit Lions, and Matt Stafford had his best QBR and his best quarterback rating and his least amount of interceptions in a full season that he's had his entire career up until that point. So he got the best out of Matthew Stafford, who's one of the best quarterbacks of the last decade. After that, he goes to the Oakland Raiders in 2018. Derek Carr had a great season, had a career best
Starting point is 00:05:32 in completion percentage and yards up to that point in his career. So he is getting the best out of all of these quarterbacks that he's working with and picking up the knowledge from some of the best quarterbacks that we've seen in our lifetime. I mean, Derek Carr, you could push to the side, but Matthew Stafford, Peyton Manning, and then, of course, in 2019, he goes to the Bengals. And look at what the Bengals have done, especially Joe Burrow at quarterback. Their passing game over the last few years, it's impossible to discount just how important Brian Callahan has been to these quarterbacks,
Starting point is 00:06:10 just how important the knowledge that Brian Callahan has gotten from these quarterbacks. And you talk about Joe Burrow and the Bengals offense, it shows that Callahan is an innovator. Callahan is a guy who's willing to adjust. Callahan is a guy who has an analytic mind. Okay, he is willing, and not only willing, but excited to use the data
Starting point is 00:06:35 and to go above just the eye test and just the film to not only track what needs to happen next, but track the performance of what he's doing so far. So you look at all this experience, working under coaches like John Fox, Gary Kubiak, Jim Caldwell, John Gruden, and then Zach Taylor. I mean, and then the biggest coach of all
Starting point is 00:06:58 is Bill Callahan, his father, who he learned under and saw call plays and run offenses his entire life. Like a lot of you guys listening, and it happens all the time around the world, you are great at what your parents were great at because you grew up learning from them. And we are seeing this directly. Brian Callahan isn't just skating off his father's accomplishments. He has taken that knowledge, which you should learn from it,
Starting point is 00:07:27 and expanded upon it and earned his own opportunities. So, Brian Callahan is an absolute perfect fit for the Tennessee Titans because of his experience, what he brings to the table, how he can use that to fix the Titans offense, to help develop Will Levis. Again, it is a perfect fit. And it's not just something that I recognize. Remember, Amy sent the private jet.
Starting point is 00:07:54 So that means that the Titans recognize how perfect of a fit Brian Callahan is as well. We also got big news. On Tuesday, Brian Callahan will call plays for the Tennessee Titans. That was the number one knock on Callahan as he wasn't a play caller. Well, I'm here to tell you that that is an unfounded concern, and Callahan should do a great job calling plays. I'll explain why before I get into it, though. Do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by PrizePix.
Starting point is 00:08:29 PrizePix is daily fantasy sports made simple. It's the easiest and fastest way to play daily fantasy sports. Here's how it works. So PrizePix has a projection for every player. Patrick Mahomes, 225 passing yards. Travis Kelsey, five catches. Lamar Jackson, one and a half touchdowns. Sam Laporta, three catches. Christian McCaffrey, 75 rushing yards. They have projections for every player, and all you do is you pick two to six players and say whether the player is going to do more or less than the prize picks projection.
Starting point is 00:09:05 If you get it right, you can win up to 25 times your money. And with only three games left in the NFL season, it's a great time to jump in. But prize picks also has NBA as well. So don't act like the action is over when the NFL season ends. Make sure that you go to prizepicks.com slash locked on NFL. Titans fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. In my mind, today's edition is a getting to know Brian Callahan episode.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Tomorrow, I'm going to be diving into what a perfect coaching staff would look like under Brian Callahan. So make sure that you stay with me here for that Monday through Friday. Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free. You're not going to beat that anywhere else. Make sure you get subscribed, stay subscribed. It's your team every day here on the Locked on Titans podcast. Again, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, nearly 25 years as a Tennessee Titans fanatic, a certified film junkie diving into the X's and O's with you guys all season long. You guys saw
Starting point is 00:10:46 the passion and energy and fire that burns in my soul for this football team on yesterday's show. Just know that is not a one-time occurrence. I care that much about this team all year round. So again, the number one Tennessee Titans podcast in the world. Get subscribed. All right. With that being said, again, the biggest news that we really got on Tuesday after the hire is that Brian Callahan will call plays. You got to give credit to Justin Mello, who had that on Monday night. We also got that corroborated by a few sources on Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:11:25 So with Callahan being the play caller, that is a huge thing. And if you just talk to Tennessee Titans fans online or you looked at my comment sections, the number one pushback that you would get for Brian Callahan is, oh, he wasn't a play caller. He's never called plays. That's, oh, we don't need that. That's not what we want.
Starting point is 00:11:44 Okay, well, listen. It's time called plays. That's, oh, we don't need that. That's not what we want. Okay. Well, listen, it's time to realize. All right. Cause number one, again, we just talked about the experience and about the mentors that Brian Callahan has had on his way here. He has been in a headset listening to play calls since 2015. And you think that he doesn't know anything about play calling? Not only that, but Callahan built the Cincinnati Bengals offense from the ground up. He incorporated stuff from LSU to make Joe Burrow more comfortable. He totally scrapped and changed their run game in the middle of seasons because he wants to do what is best.
Starting point is 00:12:24 He follows the data. As I said before, he is on record talking about expected points added, expected points added percentages. He is looking at the data and constantly self-scouting to see what his team is doing well and how they need to evolve. And if that means scrapping everything and starting over, he is willing to do it. Innovative. Willing to adjust. Modern thinking. I mean, there's that quote going around from him talking about how important the passing game is. And if you look around at the NFL,
Starting point is 00:12:54 the teams that are highest in EPA in the passing game tend to be the best offenses. How important maximizing your quarterback and your outside receivers are. And if you're a Titans fan, I don't know how you couldn't be incredibly excited about all of that. But what I want to do about this play calling thing is I want to read a quote to you guys from Zach Taylor, the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, because he has heard the play calling concerns as well. And this is what Taylor had to say, again, in a great article on The Athletic. Quote, that's just people that don't actually know.
Starting point is 00:13:33 He needs to call plays? Why? Nobody can say that. It's something people parrot out there. He's been the coordinator here for five years. He coordinates everything having to do with it. He establishes the whole structure of our offense. On game day, he and I are in constant communication. That is calling plays. That is establishing an offense. He knows everything I go through on a daily basis as a head coach. He and I both. He is as prepared as anybody can be prepared for it.
Starting point is 00:14:13 Again, I love this part. He coordinates everything. Having to do with it, he establishes the whole structure of our offense. On game day, he and I are in constant communication. That is calling plays. So I get you want to look and say he doesn't have play calling experience, but when you are that intimately involved in the structure of the offense, game planning for red zone, game planning for goal line, game planning for third downs, what you're going to do with your protection schemes, what you're going to do against certain blitz packages that
Starting point is 00:14:48 you're facing that week, how you're going to adjust your offense schematically dependent on what you're going to face your challenge that week defensively. All of that is more important in my mind than calling the plays. Like building an offense from the ground up and the structure and the foundation of an offense, making adjustments week to week throughout the season, installing the offense and teaching it to your players so that they understand.
Starting point is 00:15:16 That, to me, is all stuff that's more important than calling plays. And then when you count the experience we talked about in our first segment and then the comments from Zach Taylor right there, I have zero doubts that Brian Callahan could be an excellent play caller. And if he can do all that other stuff to an excellent level, why would you be worried about the play calling element of it anyways? So to me, it would be like somebody being an expert in trigonometry and maybe hasn't done a ton of algebra
Starting point is 00:15:47 and you doubting that they could figure out the algebra. You know, like they're already an expert at trigonometry. Why couldn't they figure out algebra? You know what I mean? So to me, I do not have the concerns about the lack of play calling experience from that quote right there that we got from Zach Taylor. So to me, again, an unfounded
Starting point is 00:16:07 concern and with what we know and what we've heard, I just don't have doubts. I'm incredibly excited about what Brian Callahan can do, not only, again, as an offensive guru and an offensive builder, but as a play caller as well. And Zach Taylor said it again. Talked with Albert Breer. He said, quote, he's as ready for this as anyone can be. He's made an enormous impact on our team,
Starting point is 00:16:37 and I've learned a ton from him because of the experience he brought to our team from other places he's been and the success he's had over his career. Whoever hires him won't regret it and we have big shoes to fill. I mean, what more do you want? You know, what more do
Starting point is 00:16:55 you want to hear? To have faith in Brian Callahan. If you don't have faith from all of this that we've gone over today, I don't know what to tell you. But, but if you still do have doubts and you want to say, well, Zach Taylor was his boss. Of course, he's going to talk nice about him, blah, blah, blah. Well, there's someone who covers the Cincinnati Bengals on a daily basis
Starting point is 00:17:16 and who has had a ton of conversations with Brian Callahan directly. And his name's Jake Lisco from Locked On Bengals. And I'm going to bring Jake on here to close out our show and let him tell you about Brian Callahan, the football bind, Brian Callahan, the offense builder, and Brian Callahan, the person. Great conversation with Jake Lisco from Locked On Bengals.
Starting point is 00:17:44 We're going to dive into that in just a moment. Callahan, the person. Great conversation with Jake Lisco from Locked On Bengals. Titans fans, we are going to cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans fans, we are going to cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast, breaking down exactly who Bill Callahan is
Starting point is 00:19:32 and why he was a perfect fit for the Tennessee Titans. Before we get into our final discussion with Jake Lisko of Locked on Bengals, I want to thank you guys again for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen each and every day. But I also want to let you guys know that Locked On has launched the first ever national sports 24-7 streaming channel on YouTube. It's called Locked On Sports Today. Make sure that you guys go to Locked On Sports today on YouTube and subscribe to the first ever national sports 24-7 streaming. Excited to bring on one of the co-hosts of Locked On Bengals, Jake Lisco, incredibly intelligent football mind in his own right.
Starting point is 00:20:24 But we're here to talk about someone who I think it would be fair to say, Jake, is a more incredibly intelligent football mind in Brian Callahan, who was the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals for quite some time. Now he's obviously going to be the head coach for the Tennessee Titans. And wanted to bring Jake on here. He's had a lot of experience talking with Brian Callahan, interviewing Brian Callahan. Jake, thanks for coming on first and foremost, but I guess just get us started. What's your overall thought of Brian Callahan as a football coach? I think he's a great football coach and it's hard to see for a lot of people. A lot of people might be wondering
Starting point is 00:21:00 what exactly did he do? He didn't call plays. Why are we hiring somebody who didn't call plays in Cincinnati? What are we doing? I don't know if that thought is out there for any Tennessee Titans fans. I'm sure it exists. Yeah, it exists. There are also Bengals fans that are happy to see him go. I'm not one of the people that is excited to see Brian Callahan go. I think that his relationship with Zach Taylor, with Dan Pitcher,
Starting point is 00:21:21 the quarterback's coach in Cincinnati, expected to replace him with Joe Burrow, the cohesion between that unit is what made the offense go in Cincinnati over their years, which led to an AFC championship run and a Super Bowl run. And this year, who knows what would have happened if Joe Burrow could have just stayed healthy. I know they had issues on defense in Cincinnati, but when Joe Burrow was healthy, go watch the 49ers game, go watch the Bills game, go watch the Texans game even watch the Bills game go watch the Texans
Starting point is 00:21:45 game even which was rocky and up and down but Joe Burrow threw a touchdown pass to Tyler Boyd that should have won them that game and those are teams that were competing very recently in the NFL playoffs so who knows what would have happened had Joe Burrow stayed healthy is my point Brian Callahan instrumental in getting the Bengals offense to that point getting them through the in-season adaptations especially since that Super Bowl run in the lead-up to that point, getting them through the in-season adaptations, especially since that Super Bowl run. In the lead up to the Super Bowl, there's a big change to the running game that year. The Bengals have changed their running game entirely in season multiple times from a,
Starting point is 00:22:16 from a scheme perspective, huge willingness to adjust and, and, and as demonstrable track record of finding the right levers to pull and buttons to press to make those adjustments. And sometimes it takes a little bit longer than some fans like. And he is very versed in a wide variety of offenses. Comes from a Gruden tree. Incorporated a lot of stuff from LSU offense when Joe Burrow was a rookie to make him comfortable in the NFL more quickly. Will cater his offense to the players that he has available to him. Loves the challenge of taking the players available to him,
Starting point is 00:22:51 their limitations or strengths, and trying to find the right game plan. And you'll see dramatically different game plans. For example, when Jake Browning came in at quarterback week to week to try to take advantage of the slivers of advantage that exists in the NFL based on matchups. So adaptable head coach with a ton of experience in a ton of different systems, a very, very smart guy. I can't wait for Titans fans to listen to Brian Callahan talk and give interviews.
Starting point is 00:23:15 And we have a ton of them on the Locked On Bengals YouTube channel if anybody wants to check those out, covering a wide array of topics. And it is Bengals focused, but you'll take away a lot about Callahan's philosophy about football if you listen to those episodes you don't even have to listen that closely because I framed the questions to Brian as hey I'm going to ask you a philosophical question and then just going to let you talk for five minutes and so you'll get that from him gives really interesting in-depth answers and that might change as a head coach I think a lot of times you see coaches a little bit more forthcoming when they're not head coaches, but I obviously can't say enough good things about Brian Callahan. My excitement, hopefully palpable for your audience here,
Starting point is 00:23:53 Tyler, because I'm just so excited for him. Devastated a little bit to lose him as a Bengals coach and a fantastic podcast guest, but he's a great coach. And I think that I'm very excited to see how he builds things in Tennessee. Absolutely. Well, Jake, in fairness, my level of excitement, I'm like sweating out of my shirt. My veins are popping in my forehead. So, you know, just having like a normal, regular human being, being excited, maybe a little confusing for the audience, but no a hundred percent. You could definitely tell that, that you like the man, you like the football mind, but I agree with your interviews because one of the things that really got me excited, he did an interview about how important
Starting point is 00:24:27 the quarterback position is, outside receivers, the passing game, what it means in the NFL nowadays, and coming from a Mike Vrabel-led team that was 27th in scoring half of his seasons as a head coach, it was a breath of fresh air to hear that even before I knew that he was getting hired. So I think that we, you know, go check out those interviews on Locked on Bengals.
Starting point is 00:24:46 You are going to get a great idea of how, you know, his philosophy of what football is nowadays is a breath of fresh air for Titans fans. But we also saw an interview recently where Zach Taylor had some things to say about Brian Callahan. He wasn't the play caller, but they work together hip to hip, figuring everything out together. What's your kind of thoughts on, although, like you said, Callahan didn't call plays, what his role was within building the offense in Cincinnati? He was instrumental in game planning, a huge part of game planning. He was responsible for the offense. He was the offensive coordinator,
Starting point is 00:25:17 and that is more than calling plays. As it turns out, he was huge in putting together the game plan, putting together the menu of plays that they'll call in third. You know, he's doing third downs. He's doing red zone. He's doing protection stuff. He's sorting through all of that every week and is putting that in. He's leading the install. And Zach Taylor still has a heavy hand, of course,
Starting point is 00:25:39 in the offense in Cincinnati. And those guys are working together. And it is a symbiotic relationship there. And they're talking to each other on the headset during games to try to get on the same page as far as what to call when and those sorts of things so it's not like he's just there to make sure Zach Taylor's agenda gets done he's not an offensive secretary that that's not his that's not his title he's not Zach Taylor's offensive secretary or assistant or whatever, just making sure Zach Taylor's agenda is implemented, although he's obviously going to do what his head coach wants more often than not. the charge on finding various ideas to exploit week to week and has his own very strong philosophical and personal beliefs about, as you mentioned, Tyler, about the way the NFL game has evolved
Starting point is 00:26:32 and the way that it will continue to evolve. I just think he's an incredibly bright guy who's going to get the most out of the team he has. And we'll see what happens. I think roster building is a huge part of things. And of course, you can only do so much with what you've got. We'll see what happens. I think roster building is a huge part of things. And of course you can only do so much with what you've got. We'll see what happens with the Titans. Right. But no one's taking a head coaching job if they don't think they can do it. These guys are all supremely confident. You know,
Starting point is 00:26:53 Callahan is looking at that team and looking at the history in Tennessee and thinks I can build a winner here. And man, this won't endear me to Tennessee fans with the AFC South. I know it's better now. I know that the Texans are good. I know that Indy has some promise with their young quarterback. But man, that division historically, whichever team is a little bit better,
Starting point is 00:27:13 is just steamrolling that division. So if he can figure things out there in Tennessee, I'm excited for his future. And with the second most cap space in the NFL, seven, eight draft picks depending on the conditional at the end a top 10 draft pick at number seven and young roster that well I'm going Joe all I gotta tell you this team has had the worst left tackle in the NFL for three years running so but that is a conversation for a different day that the point is he has the assets in front of him to build the team the way that
Starting point is 00:27:45 he thinks it should be built and to have a collaborative process to get the kind of roster that he wants. Before I let you go though, Jake, I know that obviously like you talked about, you spent a lot of time talking with Brian Callahan with your interviews on Locked On Bengals and different ways. We've talked about him as a football mind, as a builder of an offense. What do you think about Brian Callahan as a man, as just a guy? He's one of the best people I've met. I don't know him extremely well, but I know him fairly well and incredibly conscientious, very generous with time and with insight as a guest and just treated us with such respect
Starting point is 00:28:20 when we talked with him on the Lockdown Bengals podcast, which he doesn't have to do. Coaches can agree to interviews and they can be however they want to be. But he really, it felt like he went out of his way to give us great insight, to treat us well, to be friendly, easy to talk to, easy to root for. I think Brian Callahan is a great person and his role in building the culture in Cincinnati shouldn't be understated either, just from a non-personal note, like how that translates from a character perspective into a locker room. Zach Taylor made sure to give Brian Callahan plenty of credit for that as well.
Starting point is 00:28:56 And his motivational speeches and some of his motivational tactics have been cited before some big games for the Bengals who have been in plenty of them.
