Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Brian Daboll DIFFERENCE MAKER for Cam Ward in Year 2 & JC Latham Must BREAKOUT
Episode Date: May 20, 2026The Tennessee Titans have some key X-Factors that will determine their success this season and none of them is bigger than offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Daboll is tasked with maximizing Cam Ward... in year two and that is the most important job in the building. Daboll's plan for Ward seems clear and it is all about executing it. Ward and Daboll are a bit obvious, but there are others players on offense that are keys, like JC Latham heading into year three without having proven anything to this point. On defense, a player like Jermaine Johnson is a key factor in what this defense can be. Tyler discusses several X-Factor players as OTAs kickoff. The Tennessee Titans players are obviously important, but offensive coordinator Brian Dable is the team's biggest X factor this season.
I'll explain why on today's edition of Locked on Titans.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast. I am your host, Tyler Rowland Titans fans,
on today's show.
We're going to look at some of the biggest X-factors
for the Tennessee Titans this season on defense.
I think Jermaine Johnson is key.
We're going to talk about J.C.
Latham on the offensive side of the ball as well,
but we've got to start with the biggest X-factor of them all,
Brian Dable.
Again, I think Tennessee Titans,
offensive coordinator Brian Dable is kind of the key
in whether the Titans hit their ceiling this year
or whether maybe they fall a little bit short
and get closer to their floor.
because at the end of the day, he is the one controlling the development of Cam Ward.
And I think there is a potential outcome where Cam Ward goes absolutely nuclear this year.
I mean, you watch the film, you look at what he did in the second half of the season,
and then you think about the connection that him and Brian Dable are going to have together.
Remember, Brian Dable was desperate to get Cam Ward two years ago in the draft.
Like that is what, or a year ago, I guess, time flies.
Right. Like, he did all the due diligence, all of the background work, all the homework.
He's talked about all the meetings that they've had.
They went out to dinner together.
There was no one more prepared to take Cam Ward other than the Titans probably than
Brian Daibble.
And maybe Daibald was even more prepared than the Titans to take Cam Ward.
We can't know how much homework was actually done by either side.
So again, I think that Brian Daible will have a great understanding of what Cam Ward's going to do well.
He's got last year's tape to confirm that or deny that.
and even adjust to that a little bit,
which makes it a perfect situation.
I talked about it when the hire happened.
There is no offensive coordinator in the NFL
that is better suited to take over Cam Ward's development
than Brian Daible.
And Brian Daible, in my opinion,
is a better quarterback developer,
better offensive coordinator,
better offensive mine than Brian Callahan.
I think that there's no evidence to the contrary at the moment.
So it stands the reason that Cam Ward is
going to get better coaching and that with Brian Dable's previous knowledge and homework done on
Cam Ward, that there is not a better person suited in the NFL right now to take over his
development than it. So Brian Dable is the X factor and his plan for Cam Ward, what he's going
to install for Cam Ward to use. I think is absolutely critical. And it starts with a strong
multi-layered run game. And if Brian Dable, who if you look at Brian Dable's history and the output of him as an
offensive coordinator, his offenses are typically better at running the football than throwing the football,
statistically speaking. So if they can give Cam Ward a more consistent run game, I mean, the Tennessee
Titans were literally playing offense with their hand tied behind their back last year because they
had no running game. I feel like the end of the season can kind of warp how the season went because
that was the last thing that happened. But the Titans run game was truly a disaster for, you know,
12, 13 weeks of the season
until they got to that Cleveland game,
it was a disaster.
We talked about it the whole first half of the season,
how they're playing in third and longs constantly,
and they can't get any efficiency going on early downs,
and there's nothing there.
Brian Callahan didn't have the answers in the passing game,
and the Titans couldn't get anything going in the run game.
And again, they were playing on all men.
Cam Ward had to play on max difficulty last year
as a rookie with a bad supporting cast.
Like, that's just, it's insane.
So if you start with a strong multi-layered run game from Brian Dable,
that actually creates third manageable situations
where defenses can't just tee off on this rookie quarterback
and send six, five guys constantly to disrupt them,
and then you don't have guys who can win behind him,
so there's no one for the quarterback to go.
Like, that's critical.
And I don't want to see Cam Ward run.
I don't think Cam Ward's a running quarterback.
I've said that quite a bit.
But in short-yarded situations, you know, like Ryan,
and Tana Hill ran the read option for the Titans.
Cam Ward is certainly athletic enough
and a good enough runner to do that sort of stuff.
A quarterback draw on the goal line.
You know, and like Cam Ward can do that.
Brian Daibble has shown that he can mix that stuff
in effectively for a quarterback,
whether it's 36-year-old Russell Wilson
or 22-year-old Jackson Dart.
He's going to utilize the quarterback's legs
to whatever ability they can.
I think that's going to help Cam Ward
and be part of the plan.
And then the RPO game.
I think it's just so critical
that you get back to easy throws
that allow Cam Ward to win with his mind
and I mentioned it on the Titan Squad show
earlier this week that Cam Ward is going to take the next step this year
with his mind.
His body is going to improve his fitness, his diet,
his attention to detail on those things
is going to improve just as he advances in his career.
It's only natural.
We all in our careers get smarter and wiser and more efficient
as we age and learn.
You know what I mean?
So it's only natural that that's going to happen.
But generally speaking, the armed talent
is already there for Cam to be everything he needs to be.
It's the mind that needs to take the next step.
And again, natural progression of an athlete.
That's why your prime usually isn't in your rookie season.
You know what I mean?
Because your mind catches up to your physical talents
and then you're just in your final form, so to speak.
So we can't expect Cam to be that as a rookie,
but this year is a year where you can start to see the progression take hold.
The year two leap is one that happens very often for young quarterbacks.
So if you get Cam Ward back in a system that features RPO
and Brian Dable ran RPO at the heaviest rate in the NFL last year,
he doesn't need to be at the heaviest rate in the NFL with Camp Ward.
I'm not asking for that.
But to blend that actually in, when the Titans really did not do that stuff at all last year,
they did a little bit of it later in the same.
season. They started mixing it into the run game
a little bit more. We talked about that in the run game
Renaissance film breakdown video from
last year, but it just wasn't
it wasn't serious
RPO's in my opinion. It was
just certain concepts
where it's like, hey, we're not an RPO
team, but we have this trip
set over here where we'll throw the wide
receiver screen or hand it off. Like they just had
some pet plays. They didn't have an
actual full functioning RPO
game, which I
think they should have with Cam Morton. We
talked about him coming out of college. So a strong
multi-layered run game, adding
in RPO elements back to Cam Ward's profile,
giving him easy layups, letting him use his mind
to beat defenses and set defenses up for more
aggressive plays later in the game. That's critical.
And then man-beating concepts.
Daible has to create answers
against man coverage for Cam Ward because the Titans
haven't had those answers spanning multiple coaching
staffs and offensive coordinators. From Todd Downing
to Tim Kelly to, to
Brian Callahan, it did not matter.
They never had adequate answers for man coverage.
I think that Cam Ward's mind can beat zone coverages.
He's seen them now, better route concepts with better answers.
Cam will pick apart your zone coverage.
But the man coverage, Brian Dable has to make sure that he manufactures
looks consistently for the Titans early on.
And Carnell Tate should help with a lot of that.
And that brings me to isolated situations.
let Cam Ward throw the ball up to his playmakers
and when you have a guy like Carnell Tate
who's excellent contested situations
you have a guy like Gunner Helm
who's excellent contested situations
in theory you have Alecayo Manor
who should be good in those situations
I think those sorts of skill sets
are going to be very very helpful to Cam Ward
and you give him easy layups
and easy chemistry builders
and just let him playmake
when you let him throw up to guys in isolation
and I think having guys who can win those situations consistently
will only plus that element even more
and again, Helm, Tate specifically,
I think both, those could be,
I would not be shocked if Gunner Helm
was the second best weapon on the team
coming out of the season.
If we were like, you know,
hey, Gunner Helm took a huge step forward
and is one of the, you know, like, hey, we got Tate
and we got Helm.
Like people are going to be talking like that
after the year is where I think this might go.
But we're already getting too much into talking about the offensive side of the
or the offensive weapons when it comes to X factors.
But again, those guys in isolated situations, creating those isolated situations,
which I think in Brian Dable's offense, he's going to be able to do consistently.
He did with Malik neighbors, something that we talked about when we broke down the scheme
and the film breakdown video on Tick-Tac Titans.
He creates those isolated situations against modern coverages in the NFL.
and if you just have a guy who can win them,
think about Stefan Diggs.
Think about Malik neighbors.
If you can have that guy that can consistently win those,
backside curls,
quick out routes,
vertical routes down the field,
double moves,
in isolated situations in one-on-one
while there's zone coverage to the strong side,
and you have a backside isolated wide receiver
going one-on-one with an outside cornerback
because it's covered for man,
or they're playing, I believe it's called Meg concepts,
where you're in a zone, but if you get a certain alignment,
you turn it into man coverage for the outside corner.
You see that stuff all the time, all over the NFL.
It's so complex. It's hard for me to even wrap my mind around, you know.
But you see it a ton and Brian Dable is great at bending that to his will.
And given Cam Ward, those easy situations,
so a strong multi-layered run game,
which keeps the Titans out of third and long
and keeps defenses from T and off on Cam Ward,
that's going to help. The RPO game,
giving Cam Ward comfortable easy throws,
letting him use his mind for extensions of the run game and easy decisions.
Man beaters where the Titans have struggled
and then isolated situations where Cam can have chemistry
with his top go-getters.
Like if Brian Daible can put that together for Cam Ward,
which I believe is what he is doing,
I mean, he would know better than me, right?
But I believe that is what the plan is for Cam Ward.
You put all that together.
Again, that's why Brian Daibble is the X-Fact.
because if he puts together the proper plan for Cam Ward
and Cam Ward goes superstar X Factor,
that changes the entire season for the team.
But he needs people to come with him.
Let's talk about the other X factors on offense and defense.

With that being said, though, again, we go to the offensive side of the ball.
And I mentioned Cornell Tate and Gunner Helm just a second ago, and they're going to come up here.
because I already mentioned why their situations in particular
could be very important to the offense at Camp Ward.
But I have to start with Jay C. Leigh, who I think is even of a greater importance.
We know, we know that Peter Skoronsky is a very good play, right?
We don't need, he's going to get 20 some million dollars per year on a contract.
One of the better guards in the NFL.
He's a good player, good pass protector.
Don't have to worry about that.
Great.
but outside of that, everything else is a legitimate worry, if you're honest.
Dan Moore is average to below average based on the matchup.
We obviously have massive holes to worry about at center and right guard.
Even like whoever you think is going to start at those spots,
whatever combination you want to put together,
there's no combination that doesn't include Kevin Zitler, in my opinion,
who's currently not on the team,
maybe he signs before training camp or whatever,
but either way, if he has not signed and what they,
currently have is what they're currently going to go with and what they stay with.
There's no way that Wright Garden Center is anything but a massive question.
And again, I think it's Austin Shlopman and Jackson Slater.
I did my predictions for who's going to win the Titans biggest roster battles
earlier this week.
You can go back and check that out.
But it's a big question mark.
So if J.C. Latham is also a massive question mark all year, it can't work.
if Pete is really good and Latham is really good.
Dan Moore is average.
You get average out of sloping at center
and then slightly below average to just outright bad, at right guard.
You could probably survive.
You could probably still have a seven-win season off that.
But if Latham isn't really good,
and you're on the right-hand side
with average to below-average on both tackle spots,
one good guard, a question at center,
and maybe a bad right guard.
If that's what you're working with, you are smoked.
So, Latham was a top 10 pick.
And we had thought that we got off
the bus first round pick train.
And I don't think that J.C. Latham will be an outright bust.
But will he be worth a top 10 pick?
Number seven, especially when guys behind him,
Olu Faschenu, Tilly Seifuwaga,
Troy Fautano.
They all look like Armarius Mims.
They all look like better players than J.C. Latham right now.
At least at minimum, at minimum,
comparable.
And J.C. Latham is not significantly, clearly, obviously better.
So that's unfortunate right now with where things stand.
Because I would have rather had Olu Fashtonu
as we stand right here.
Latham has a lot to prove.
Like he's a massive X-factor
because not only should he be a wall and pass protection,
he should be a mauler in the run game.
And he's just not quite that right now.
He's not, you know, that big physical,
large human being, big frame maller out of Alabama.
Like he's just not quite that as a run blocker right now.
He's never really been that.
He just doesn't have that
finish all the time.
It's hot and cold.
So it's a big year for J.C. Latham.
Like if we're making a list, and I might make this list at some point in the all season,
not just like X factors, but like just massive implications
this season for players.
And we just rank them.
Latham is probably top three.
I think Cam Ward's probably number one.
Duh. You know what I mean?
I think Tate is pretty high on that list.
But Latham, fighting for the number two spot, most certainly.
Outside of J.C. Latham, though, because we could talk offensive line the whole 30 minutes,
and I'm sure we'll have a 30 minutes where we do that.
But I mentioned Cornell Tate and Gunner Helm earlier.
I think they're massive X-factors for this Titans team.
I think the running back group is steady as it goes.
Nothing about that is going to be, oh, if Tony Pollard has a great year.
Yeah, so what?
Tad J. Spears has a great ear.
if Nick Singleton breaks out.
I mean, those are all great things.
I'm sure I would love for any of those
or all of those things to happen, quite honestly.
But those players aren't going to make the difference
whether the Titans win 10 or 7 games or 4 games.
I don't see that as a massive factor.
The other things are more important.
The run game is that good.
It's because the O-line was good this year.
And that's the next factor.
And we just talked about how that could be related.
But for the weapons, again, to me, it's Taiton.
And we've talked about Tate and Helm quite a bit throughout this week.
So I wanted to start with Latham.
But I mentioned it, the isolated situations,
whether it's an isolated tight end on a linebacker or safety,
Gunner Helm, 6'5, jumping over top of somebody
because there's nobody open.
And he just goes and makes a play.
Same thing, Cardinal Tate, he's been doing that.
That's what he was billed to be,
is the contested catch, deep threat, demon.
That is what Tate is meant to be.
So if those guys
aren't that for Cam Ward,
the safety blanket to get out of jail free card,
because Wondell Robinson is small.
He's not going to win in those contested situations
where Cam's under pressure and he just throws it up to Wondale Robinson.
We know that Calvin Redley's never been that guy.
Chim is not that kind of guy.
I-O needs to be that kind of guy, but can we trust the hands?
That's to be determined.
So who else is it going to be?
It's got to be helm and it's got to be tape.
They have to be the go-getters for Cam Ward.
They have to be, F-It, Tate's down there somewhere,
Helms down there somewhere.
We have seen Helm and Tate both do it with incredible success.
We just need to see more of it.
It just has to, you know, be pumped up.
Those are rookie numbers.
Literally rookie numbers for Gunner Helm.
But I'm just saying that has to,
those things have to happen more.
And with how Brian Daible can manufacture matchups
and isolated situations,
I think those guys are going to have opportunities
to become those X-factors
and be on the high-end side
and push the Titans to 8, 9, 10 wins potentially.
Like I think Gunner Helm, I mentioned it earlier,
I think Helm can take that step this year
to where he's one of the top 10, 12 tight ends
and all of football.
And when we think about like a fantasy aspect,
like Gunner Helm is a guaranteed draft guy next year.
Like, oh yeah, we got to take Kim Ward's tight-in.
They have great chemistry.
He gets touchdowns.
I just, I believe in Gunner Helm.
I have all along.
Nightmare on Helm Street, man.
I live there.
All right, I'm a resident.
So those are the biggest X-factors.
If Tate goes nuts,
Gunner Helm breaks out,
J. Z. Latham takes a massive step forward.
There's no way that this offense
isn't significantly better.
When you have a real number one tight end,
a real number one wide receiver,
and a shut down right tackle
to be opposite of
Peter Skoronsky is a great guard,
and more as at least an average veteran tackle.
Like, that is how you,
and then Cam Ward and Brian Dable, like we talked about,
that is how you maxed this thing out.
Now, on the defensive side of the ball,
I think there are some guys who could lead to a dominant,
dominant defense this season that are the X factors there.
Do want to let you know that today's episode
is brought to you by Fandle.
The NBA playoffs are here in every possession matters
If you're looking to get even closer to the action, Fandle has a great offer to get you started.

Fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
Again, we're going over the X factors for this season.
Brian Daible and his plan for Cam Ward is absolutely critical.
That leads into J.C. Latham, Carnel Tate, Gunner Helm,
taking a big step forward for the Titans.
But now we've got to move to the defensive side of the ball.
Where I think Jermaine Johnson is actually the biggest X factor for the Titans on that side.
I mean, we've talked about some of the younger guys.
I mean, I think Keldrick Folk is an absolutely massive X factor for the Titans.
But we've spent a lot of time talking about Keldrick Folk.
When we look at these veteran players on defense,
I think a major X factor again is Jermaine Johnson.
Now before I explain why I do want to thank you for making Locked on Titans

description to join.
With that being said, though,
we know that the Titans interior is going to be good, right?
I don't really have a lot of questions.
You got the number one sack getter on the interior in the entire NFL
and the best interior defensive lineman,
maybe the second best defensive player in the entire NFL.
Miles Garrett obviously has to wear the crown as things sit right now.
But Jeffrey Sittman is certainly right there as second, third,
you know, he's a top five defender in the NFL.
But we could say that with no debates.
you know you have him.
And then you have the guy who had the third most sacks
on the interior defensive line in the entire NFL
and John Franklin Myers.
So Solomon Thomas,
Jordan Elliott,
they draft Jackie Marshall.
They're going to have other guys competing for those spots.
Like the Titans and Caldric Folk is going to play some on the interior.
The Titans interior defensive line is going to be really good.
But you still need edge pressure.
You still need someone to set the,
edge properly. You still need someone to create pressure quick and force the quarterback
up into that interior defensive line. You have to have some sort of edge pressure. You can't just
have nothing on the edge, guys getting smoked on the edge, and then your interior
defensive line is going to do good enough to get the job done, especially with the questions
and the secondary like we have talked about previously. So somebody on the edge needs to be the
number one edge rusher because the other two guys who are going to be primarily in that rotation
are Femio, who we talked about earlier this week, is a major question mark.
Can't count on Femmy right now to be something in a pass rush game.
I think he's going to be a really good run defender, but at some point,
you've got to have something other than just good run defenders, okay?
So Femi's a question mark, and then the other guy is a tween or a rookie who's going to play
inside and outside, and they've said multiple times, is going to rush the pass
from the inside.
Well, if that's the case, then
Germain Johnson is the lead dog.
You have two young guys.
Both development projects, really.
At the edge with you,
you have to be the dog.
The number one edge.
Can Jermaine Johnson be more like
2023 before he blew his Achilles?
7 and a half sacks.
Get that 8, 9 sacks.
For Jermaine Johnson.
Excellent run defense.
set in the edge, playing physical, darting in, tackles for loss.
Can he be that?
Or is it going to be more like what he was last year for the jets?
After the Achilles.
Now, he's a year removed from the Achilles,
and as everybody likes to point out,
and I like to point out as well,
when you're a year removed and you've had a year to play,
and usually you feel a lot better the next year,
you're more close to 100%.
But it's an Achilles, we can't know.
So he is a major X factor for this defense
because of Jermaine Johnson is his best self,
and he's 10 sacked
Germaine Johnson
and it looks more like
20, 23, 8, 9 sacks.
He had 7 and a half in that year.
So 8, 9, 10 at the max.
If you're that kind of player
with what the Titans have on the interior defensive line
and then you allow Femi and Falk
to figure things out on the other side
with a little bit of help from Jacob Martin and Jalen Harold,
that could turn the Titans into an elite defense.
Which again, the Titans' clearest path
to the playoffs is through an elite defense.
Now, also making the defense elite,
Cedric Gray is the other X-Factor.
Cedric Gray is a guy that we haven't talked about a lot
this offseason because there's all the free agents
and the draft picks,
and now there's Anthony Hill that we talk about all the time.
Cedric Gray was just ho-hum, great.
Just setting the record for the Titans, for tackles,
making plays all over the field.
He needs to improve in coverage.
We all know that.
But while everyone's busy talking about,
Anthony Hill, myself included,
Cedric Gray could take a huge step forward with Robert Salas tutelage
with Gus Bradley.
Cedric Gray is the day three
breakout superstar linebacker that already has NFL experience
and could be the green dot lead dog.
Remember, Gus Bradley said that their linebackers
from a skill set standpoint are interchangeable.
So whether you're the will or the will,
the mic, it's really just about who's wearing the green dot, who's doing the communication
because they like the same skill set for their linebackers.
So if that's the case,
Cedric Gray probably just going to be the mic.
Wear the green dot, be the leader of the defense,
be one of the best young linebackers in the entire NFL
and take that leap to be one of the top five, top 10 linebackers in the whole league.
And if he does that, again,
we're on our way to an elite defense with an elite linebacker.
in the middle running it and coordinating everything.
That is a great step.
And for Robert Salah's defense that puts so much on that middle linebacker spot
to have somebody excelling in that role,
that just, it's like hitting the turbo pad for Robert Salas defense.
And the last name that I'm going to mention as an X factor is Alante Taylor.
We have not talked a lot about the outside veteran corners
that were signed in free agents.
And I did it a little bit when I talked about the secondary being a question mark
because Alante Taylor and Cordell Flott
are not considered elite cornerbacks in the NFL.
They're good.
And that doesn't mean that they can't have a down season.
So I'm going with Alante Taylor.
You could put Cordell Flot in this as well,
but for the sake of just having one guy,
Taylor was paid $20 million a year
to be the Titans number one corner on the outside
and be the boundary corner
that pressed up on the line of scrimmage
and gets in guys' face and his physical.
So he can't have a bad year.
And if Alante Taylor overperforms in that role,
if he does turn into one of the best cornerbacks
in the entire NFL,
which Robert Sala has gotten some great cornerback seasons
out of gods.
Like, think back, Charverius Ward played there for a while,
and Diomador Lenore.
playing there right now.
There are some other examples in there, too,
of good cornerback play because the way that Robert
Salas' defense is set up, those outside
cornerbacks basically just have that one-on-one
matchup down the sideline, and that's all they have to worry about,
and they can just play fast and make plays.
And when you have Alante Taylor being fast, being physical,
making plays on the football,
simple responsibilities,
he could turn into a freak.
And again, if Dremaine Johnson is really good,
and I don't need Dremaine Johnson to be an elite ad dresser.
Again, I said eight, nine,
Sacks.
Cedric Gray, who already looked excellent,
takes another step forward under one of the best
linebacker coaches in the league.
And Alante Taylor, who's going to be in a system
that caters exactly to what his skill set is,
if he takes a step forward,
those three X factors right there,
at cornerback, linebacker, and edge,
with what we know about the interior defensive line,
boom.
Massive, massive return
for the Titans defense,
if they get that.
Now, is it likely that all of these things go according to plan?
No, but if they do, the Titans make the playoffs.
If four of the six or five of the six or three of the six
probably still be a good thing, it'll probably still be a good thing.
But let me know who you think the X factors are on offense and defense down below.
That's going to do it for me today, folks.
Tomorrow, OTAs cannot wait to break that down.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was locked on Titans.
Thank you.
