Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Calvin Ridley PRAISES Cam Ward, Cally's Plan & Predicting Titans Defensive Starters
Episode Date: May 25, 2025The Tennessee Titans will need to see a great connection between Cam Ward and star receiver Calvin Ridley. Ridley spoke over the weekend at an event and seems to be enjoying having Ward around and als...o seems very happy with the new offseason plan from head coach Brian Callahan. On defense, there are multiple starting jobs up for grabs in the front seven including edge and inside linebacker, but filling those holes will likely require a combination of young players and vets. Finally, there aren't any shockers in the secondary when it comes to starters, but there is some major uncertainty with L'Jarius Sneed. Tennessee Titans star wide receiver Calvin Ridley sounds fired up about having Cam Ward as his quarterback.
I'm going to tell you what he had to say on today's edition of Locked on Titans.
the Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked On Titans podcast. I am your host, Tyler Rowland, Titans fans on today's show.
I'm going to predict every single starting spot on the defense.
I'm going to talk edge linebacker, the secondary can't wait to make my predictions
there and see what you guys have to say.
But first we're going to start with Calvin Ridley's comments from over the weekend.
The Titans star wide receiver had his own football camp.
He talked about Cam Ward.
He talked about Brian Callahan's offseason plan as well.
So we'll dive into all of that before we do do want to thank for making Locked On Titans your first listen each and every day. Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee
Titans content all year round, always for free. Make sure that you get subscribed,
stay subscribed, it's your team every day. Speaking of every day, shout out to my

I have year round five days a week content for you, and I never take a day off. So tomorrow we're going to look Titans OTAs plus mini camp is right around the corner. I'm gonna keep you guys ready to go. I got a 53-man roster prediction coming in a little over a week.
So a lot of content still coming here on the channel. Stay locked in to the Locked on Titans
podcast. But with that being said again, Calvin Ridley had his youth football camp at Lipscomb
Academy over the weekend.
And he had some things to say, not only about Cam Ward as his quarterback,
but also the Brian Callahan offseason plan, which somehow, uh,
my observation has whipped into a huge topic for everyone who covers the
Tennessee Titans now. So we'll talk about all that,
but we got to start with the comments about Cam Ward because when it comes to excitement level, what could possibly be
more exciting for Tennessee Titans fans than more Cam Ward content folks. So
fired up to see this young man play football, but I'm not the only one. It
sounds like his star wide receiver, his number one veteran wide receiver is
also very excited as well. From Tyronne Davenport at the football camp, Calvin Ridley said about Cam Ward,
quote, he's a dog, man. He's confident. That's the biggest thing. Coming into the league, if you're confident,
and it's like a humble confidence, he knows he can play. That's what you want. You want somebody that knows they can play.
Make the throws. He's smart. He's not afraid of anybody. He's ready to take it on.
I'm excited for him. We got to keep throwing. He throws with great timing.
His timing is up to date. I don't think it's going to be a problem.
And he kept saying like, you know, we're bonding right now.
We're becoming brothers right now. That's what you want to do.
You want to build that relationship and everything that Calvin Ridley said here
about cam war gets me even more fired up than I was before.
I remember we talked last week.
We heard from Tony Pollard.
We heard from van Jefferson.
We heard from Dan Moore and all of them had great things to say about cam ward.
And I know that there will be the
dissenting opinion. There will be the, well, of course they're going to say
great things about their teammate. Well, quite frankly, in my opinion, if you
didn't like somebody or you didn't think Cam Ward was up to date or you didn't
think Cam Ward was doing a good job, you would just play it coy like, hey, I'm
just trying to get to know him. You know, we're brand new here. I'm just learning.
You would not go out of your way to heap praise on a guy
that you didn't actually like.
You would find a better, more appropriate way
to get around the question than to just lie
or anything like that.
So I don't think that Calvin Ridley is the type of guy
that can lie straight to your face and you wouldn't notice.
He's a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve.
You can kind of easily tell what kind of mood
Calvin Ridley is in and for him to come out of his way here and praise his confidence.
Cam Ward's confidence is going to be so, so key and he's right. Going from college, coming into
a rookie season in the NFL, I think there are a lot of things that can knock your confidence down.
You're brand new to the whole, going to practice is a brand new job. Just that alone put people, you know, it puts people on their heels.
When people go into a new job, when they don't know their circumstances, when
they don't know the situation, when they're just learning something new,
people are usually very uncomfortable with new things. So you're already in
that uncomfortable situation where you're learning new stuff. It's a new job.
But for Ken Ward to have confidence and carry it through and be so confident in But you're already in that uncomfortable situation where you're learning new stuff, it's a new job.
But for Cam Ward to have confidence and carry it through and be so confident in himself
that his teammates already can tell, like, and remember, those are the check boxes that
I wanted to see during these early off-season things for Cam Ward.
Carry yourself like a superstar.
Earn the respect of your teammates.
Have people recognize that you carry yourself
like a number one overall pick. And that's exactly what we've heard so far.
We heard it from the veterans last week as well. I also love the last little bit
where Calvin Ridley talked about timing. He throws with great timing. His timing
is up to date. I don't think it's going to be a problem. Like Cam Ward and what
we heard early, he gets the ball out of his hands quick. When Ellic Iow Manor talked about Cam Ward at the rookie mini camps,
he said, you better be on time because Cam Ward is not going to be late. And if you're late,
you're late. So the fact that everyone is praising how quickly Cam Ward gets the ball out of his
hands, we even heard during those rookie mini camps when we got reports from Tyron Davenport from ESPN,
Jim Wyatt from Tennessee Titans.com, they're talking about the zip that
Cam Ward throws with how quick the ball gets off his hands.
All that, like, that is something that's been mentioned by teammates, coaches,
media, like, what else do you want to hear before we realize that Cam Ward's
release timing and getting the ball out of his hands quickly, reading the defense
quickly, getting it out, that's going to be critical not only to his success, but also to the offensive
line, right? That's going to help the offensive line in a big way to get the ball out quick.
Excuse me. Sacks are not just an offensive line stat. Tom Brady was never super mobile
and he didn't take a lot of sacks because he managed the pocket and got the ball out quick.
So sacks are an offensive. Remember we saw last year,
Titans offensive line gave up like seven sacks in four weeks with Mason Rudolph at quarterback
and then gave up 22 sacks in four weeks with Will Levis.
Why? Because Will Levis. You know what I mean?
So like the offensive line deserves their fair share of blame,
but the quarterback has a major impact on the protection and on the sack numbers
and for so many people to be already giving praise to Cam Ward for his timing.
I love that. Calvin Ridley also talked about the Tennessee Titans offseason as a whole.
And obviously I talked in my last episode about how things could look in the optics of Brian Callahan's current all season changes and what we've seen from the all season and the things they chose to do and not do.
I simply pointed out that that could be used against Brian Callahan and apparently simply having that observation means that I believe that I'm saying that I'm criticizing Brian Callahan's all season choices, even though my original tweet where I gave the opinion originally, I said, it doesn't really bother me. I don't mind. I don't see a big deal with it. I'm just saying it could be used against Brian Callahan if they don't succeed. But I guess saying that means that it's my opinion, even though I pointed out that that's
not how I feel.
But regardless of that, Calvin Ridley commented on that reaction.
It appears again via Tyron Davenport from his youth football camp.
He said, quote, you said they were laughing at us.
This is probably the hardest OTAs I've been in as a player personally.
We've been working real hard, man.
I have been on teams that were not connected.
I just show up and I go home.
It's gotta be connected.
That's how those teams are winning.
Those teams that are winning,
they're friends, they're brothers, they're homeboys.
They eat together, they hang out.
If you don't have that,
I don't think one team that's won the Super Bowl didn't have that.
I bet you the Eagles, they were friends, they were boys, I bet they hung out.
That's all Coach Callie is doing.
He's trying to make us boys, homeboys, whatever you want to call it,
brothers before we get into camp and separate ourselves from each other.
You want to bring the team together and do team competitions.
All we are doing is competing.
We compete at everything we do right now at work,
and I think it's great. I think it's so fun. I'm a captain on my team. I got my boys behind me.
I'm telling them every day we're trying to win. It's only making us closer. It's really working.
All right. So obviously, even though I said that I don't mind mind I am not bothered by this offseason plan
I just think it can be held against Brian Callahan. I
Will say here
That yeah, you want your team together. Yeah, you want closeness
Yeah, you want guys to care about each other
Football is the closest thing that a sport can be to the military in terms of you got to actually care about the guy next
To you in the trenches or it's not gonna work
the military in terms of you got to actually care about the guy next to you in the trenches or it's not going to work. But listen, you could put the best friends in the world together
and if they aren't talented enough, they're not going to win. So I hope the Titans get
all buddy buddy. It will make the team better. But at the end of the day, you want to win
football games in the NFL, you need good players. So that'll always be more important than,
you know, being Boy Scouts and hanging out all summer together.
Like that stuff matters, absolutely matters, but the Titans could be the closest team in
the NFL and they're not winning the Super Bowl this year. You need more talent than
that. So all good and well, Ridley seems to love Kam, seems to love Callie's plan. Excited
to see what Calvin Ridley does this year. But now who's going to start on the defensive
side of the ball? I'm going to give my predictions Ridley does this year. But now, who's going to start on the defensive side of the ball?
I'm going to give my predictions.
Can't wait to hear yours.

We talked about Calvin Ridley's comments from over the weekend, showing some love to Cam Warden. I love the things specifically that Calvin Ridley is showing love to.
Then we talked about Brian Callahan's all season plan that I wasn't critical of.
I just made an observation of, but people take that as a critique.
And now Calvin Ridley is at his youth football camp,
pushing back against an opinion that I don't even have.
You know, sometimes I wonder what would the Titans content
sphere be without me? I mean, I can just send a tweet on a Friday and turn it
into multiple articles and questions and listen, shout out my guy,
Tyron Davenport. I'm sure that he wasn't just looking at my tweet and asking
Calvin Ridley questions. It's tongue in cheek, folks. Everybody calmed down.
But with that being said, let's predict some defensive starters. Who is going to start on defense for the Tennessee Titans?
Now, look, a lot of the starting lineup
is pretty solidly set, in my opinion.
I don't think that we need to have any crazy controversies,
discussing certain aspects of the starting lineup,
specifically in the secondary, which we'll talk about in a moment.
But starting with the front seven, which, you know,
we start where it counts the most.
You look on the defensive line, and if you want to look at the Titans, I personally hate
when people ask me, you know, base defense questions about the Titans, like, oh, there are
three-four team, or oh, there are this, or hey, what defense is this defensive coordinator?
there are this or hey, what defense is this defensive coordinator? Look, there's odd fronts and even fronts and yes, that can be different. Odd front think it's like a three, four, because five men
are on the line of scrimmage, even, even four, four down linemen, four, three. You know what I mean?
Like there are differences in fronts and how things are played and like there are big differences
in the different schemes. But for a fan, you know,
I wouldn't even say like a die-hard fan even, not even like more of a casual fan, but even a die-hard
fan of the Titans. 3-4 versus 4-3 and all that, it just doesn't matter that much anymore. I mean,
it's good to know it's real, it exists. The Titans Titans are an odd team They're a five-man front team. Their base defense is a 3-4 no doubt about it
but again
In the NFL nowadays
The majority of the game is played in nickel where you have five defensive backs and only four down linemen and two linebackers
No matter what so if we're talking about the Titans,
quote unquote, base defense of a three, four,
then to me, it seems pretty clear
that it's Sebastian Joseph Day,
Tavondre Sweat at nose tackle,
and then Jeffrey Simmons at three technique.
So you have your five technique in Sebastian Joseph Day,
you have your nose tackle,
you have your three technique in Jeffrey Simmons.
That seems pretty clear to me.
Now, if you want to argue that maybe a guy like Draymond Jones,
Draymond Jones is a guy who I think is considered an edge
but has some D-line versatility.
I see him more as, you know, in a four-man front.
I think he's a little more helpful as a defensive end.
Kick inside.
We'll talk about all that, but
you could say, you could, you know, say, oh Draymond Jones could potentially
be the five technique for Sebastian Joseph Day. You could maybe talk that, but I personally don't think the Titans are going to use
Draymond Jones in that way where he's a super inside player on early downs,
which when are you going to be playing your base defense? When are you really going to be playing a 3-4 alignment in an NFL football game?
Only basically on early downs, short yardage, goal line.
Like we aren't talking about the majority of the game again.
So when you're saying that, I think if you're playing your base 3-4 defense,
you want a little bit more beef on the front.
That's why you're doing that.
Otherwise, you would just play nickel and stop the run from nickel. But if you're going to play your base three,
four defense, I think it has to be Sebastian Joseph Day as that third interior defensive lineman with
Tevon Dre Sweat and Jeffrey Simmons. It has to be because it wouldn't make sense. You know what I
mean? You could slot Draymond Jones in there, but it just doesn't just doesn't make a ton of sense.
could slot Draymond Jones in there, but it just doesn't, just doesn't make a ton of sense.
Now, after you move away from the interior defensive line, you've got to go to the edge spot, right?
That is really where our first true opening is that we're going to discuss, because I think that you have Artin Key locked in place.
Now, the thing about the edge rusher position is I feel like it could be very rotational. It could be very, this guy does this in this role at this time.
And that makes starter a little, you know, convoluted at the end of the day.
I could tell you who I think is going to be the first pair of edge
rushers on the field week one snap one for the defense.
Is that the starters that we're predicting here because if that is the
answer that we're giving then in my opinion these starting edge rushers for the Tennessee Titans
are going to be Arden Key and Lorenzo Carter. Lorenzo Carter is a guy who I feel like has been
completely forgotten and for good reason look I'm not going to sit here and tell you that don't
forget about Lorenzo Carter. Yeah maybe you can't forget about Lorenzo Carter quite honestly but
Don't forget about Lorenzo Carter. Yeah, maybe you can't forget about Lorenzo Carter, quite honestly.
But what does Lorenzo Carter do?
Okay.
What is Lorenzo Carter good at?
Well, Lorenzo Carter has three sacks in the last three seasons.
I think like total like not three sacks each year for nine.
No three sacks total in the last three years.
He had zero last year for Atlanta.
I'm pretty sure Lorenzo Carter is a 6'5", 260-pound edge rusher or edge setter.
Okay. He is a run defender. That is what he did best in Atlanta. Not a great pass rusher. Isn't a very refined pass rush guy with his moves and his technique.
He's an effort guy. He's a motor guy. He can get clean up sacks if other guys create the pressure and he just with his motor and energy finds a
way to do it. But quite frankly, Femi Oladejo can do those things as a
pass rusher right now. So I don't, if I want that out of my pass rusher, I'm
just going to play Femi every single snap that I want that. You know what I
mean? So the reality is though, where Lorenzo Carter is going to have that role is on early downs as a run stuffer.
So, if you're telling me we're in a 3-4 defense, snap one, D1, week one, then I'm going to say Lorenzo Carter is the starter.
But again, it's so situational because I think that Draymond Jones probably plays more than Lorenzo Carter. I think when we get into those nickel packages on second and third down,
you're going to see like Arden Key at edge, Draymond Jones at edge,
Sweatt and Simmons on the interior. The first pure pass rushing snap,
the first, they're throwing the ball, we're playing nickel defense.
It could be snap one, it could be third down.
But that very first pass rush snap, I think it's going to be Key, Sweatt, Simmons, Jones.
So from that perspective, should we call Draymond Jones the starter?
Because I think he's going to get more snaps.
And I think in the more important version of the defense,
Draymond Jones is starter.
It's like, I don't think Roger McCreary is on the field.
If the Titans are in a three, four defense, but Roger McCreary
is a starter, right?
I mean, come on here.
Like Roger McCreary could be the second or third best player
on the whole defense.
He's started, you know, so it just depends on how you want to look at it.
But my official prediction is I again, I think Lorenzo Carter
is the guy who starts in their base defense first down first snap all that.
But I think that in their actual most used starting defense, which is nickel,
I think we're going to see Draymond Jones as the
starting edge rusher opposite of Arden Key with Sweatt and Jeffrey Simmons on the interior. Now,
I will say that I think Draymond Jones is going to play a ton on the inside. So I think there's a
great chance that we see, you know, Jeffrey Simmons, Draymond Jones on the interior,
Arden Key, Femi Aladejo on the outside. I think that we get a look at that a ton as well. But again, for base defense purposes, give me Lorenzo Carter in that
outside role as the starter. But if they're a nickel, I think
it's going to be Draymond Jones on the outside. Either way,
we kind of understand who the important players are going to
be on this defensive line. The starting level players who we
should expect. But with that in mind, I think that's it. I think that's it. I think that's it. I think that's it. I think Either way, we kind of understand who the important players are going to be on this defensive line,
the starting level players who we should expect.
But with that in mind, what about the back end of the defense?
We've talked about interior defensive line.
We've talked about edge.
What about that secondary linebacker spot and then the secondary in general?
We're going to talk about that right now.
Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the locked on Titans podcast. We've talked about Calvin Ridley's comments from over the weekend.
We've talked about the interior defensive line and the edge and who I think the
starters will be in.
Look, I understand it's a complicated discussion on the defensive line, but you
know, that's the reality of where the Titans are at and how they kind of, kind
of got to piece things together with their pass rush and with their front this year.
But now we need to talk about this linebacker spot
because the second starting linebacker spot is wide open
and it's anybody's guess.
But the secondary is honestly kind of the opposite of that.
Before we dive into it though,
do want to thank you again for making Locked on Titans
your first listen.
Remember tomorrow we are going to do the offensive starters where there's a lot of fun,
especially with the skill positions as well.
And then Titans have OTAs on Wednesday.
I'm going to get you ready for that.
And then I'm going to break those down.
53-man roster prediction to start next week right before we get into more OTAs next week and
then the week after that mandatory mini camp is here. There's so much Tennessee Titan stuff
coming your way. Either way, thanks for making Locked on Titans your first listen. For your
second listen, check out Locked on NFL Scouting. Kyle Krabs, Joe Marino is your host. They
make you the most informed NFL fan this all season find locked on NFL scouting on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcasts, but
The secondary linebacker spot and again, there is no answer that I'm gonna give you that's gonna be straightforward
Because once again
My answer is what?
Defensive personnel grouping or the Tennessee Titans in to start the season?
If the first snap of the season is in 3-4, my answer is going to be different than if
their first snap of the season on defense is in nickel.
So in a 3-4, of course, we said you have Sebastian Joseph Day, Tevandre Sweat, Jeffrey Simmons
up front, I had Lorenzo Carter and Arden Key as the starting edges. Well, the two inside linebackers in that group, we know that
one of them is going to be Cody Barton. Lock the gates, throw away the key, you know, drain the
river, whatever you want to do, Cody Barton is going to be one of the starters, barring health. Obviously all of this is barring health.
But next to him, we have James Williams, second year player out of Miami.
We have Cedric Gray, second year player out of North Carolina.
We have Otis Reese going into his third year.
Oshery, they added off waivers Inside linebacker out of New England. And then, uh, David, uh, Benda from Texas, undrafted free agent, another guy that could maybe put his nose in there and see if he can get some run.
Uh, there's a lot of different options for that spot, but again, in the Titans base defense, 3-4, I'm gonna go with James Williams. James Williams is a downhill hammerhead
shark that Cedric Gray simply is not. Now, Otis Reese is that type of player
too, and maybe Otis Reese is the guy who secretly has the leg up, but Otis Reese
going into year three, still not great with his diagnosis, still doesn't read
things very well, great athlete, athlete triggers downhill, not great in
coverage. I think that a guy like James Williams going to his second year as a converted
safety gives the Titans a little more versatility than a guy like Otis Reese
while still giving them that downhill explosiveness that Otis Reese can give
you, that violence, that physicality to shoot through a gap, take on a blocker,
knock him back, make a hit on the running back, like that
sort of downhill violence that you get from Otis Reese, you do get that in James Williams
as well with maybe a more refined player with more upside who's younger by two years or
a year.
You know, like it just makes so much sense in the world to go with James Williams in
that role.
So James Williams is who I think takes that starting snap if the Titans are in there three, four to start. But I will say this, the Titans
go to a nickel package on defense. I think it'll be Cedric Gray that is starting next
to Cody Barton because I think Cedric Gray offers more in pass coverage. He's a more
fluid athlete, more versatile guy than even a guy like James.
So I see Otis Reese as a pure run down only physical downhill backer. I see James Williams
as kind of a step up from that in the versatility and then I would go one pass with Cedric Gray and
say Cedric Gray has more of a pass coverage skill set, more versatile in that way, but can still play the run.
So to me, it's between Williams and Gray, and I think situationally you want more run defense,
I'm going with Williams. You want more pass defense, I'm going with Cedric Gray.
Now could any of these other guys, OJRI or Benda, make a move and steal this spot entirely?
I'm here for it, because the Titans desperately need to hit on some late-round,
undrafted, free agent type guys to build this thing back up
We focus so much on the first round pick the second round pick the third round pick top
100s this and that and like of course those are the picks they historically speaking are to give you gonna give you the most value and
Give you the highest chance to get most production out of them
But the reality is that in the NFL in football guys come from all over the
place all the time and outperform their draft spot or their undrafted situation.
So the Titans need to hit like a Xavier Restrepo were to hit.
If a Jackson Slater were to hit a David Benda were to hit, you know,
guys that were taken later or were undrafted free agent guys who most people aren't expecting a lot from if the Titans could get three or four of those guys to hit over the next two years, couple this year couple next year that totally changes the tenor.
If you can get starting level players with some of those, you know, low value investments, that's how you turn something around really quickly. You got to hit on the big stuff, but man hitting that small stuff and finding some value there.
That's absolutely critical.
So I think the Titans might be able to do that at linebacker where I'm not overly enamored by any of the options that they have right now outside of Cody Barton.
But then you get into the secondary and look, I don't really have a lot to say here about the secondary.
It is set in stone.
look, I don't really have a lot to say here about the secondary. It is set in stone.
Legerius Snead, Jarvis Brownlee Jr., Roger McCreary.
Those are your top three cornerbacks.
Amani Hooker, Xavier Woods are your starting safeties.
You have Mike Brown and Julius Wood and then Kevin Winston, who's going to be
developing off the ACL tear from last year.
Like those guys are going to be behind them.
The only real question, there's no shock in the secondary when I say that, but the only real question is, is the Jerry Snead going to be okay? He's still
rehabbing, having, it seems that that's the expectation from the team. So everyone's acting
like this isn't some big disappointment or some big shocker or anything like that. But you know,
he's been rehabbing that knee or maintenance on that knee
his entire career. So when we say, you know, he's rehabbing two injuries, well, one of them is
constant maintenance. So unless you're rehabbing always, it's not really rehab. Rehab is
rehabilitation to get you back to a point. So if you have non-stop like sadness is something you feel at one time,
depression is sadness extended. Rehab is something you do in the short term.
I don't know what the term would be for it being a constant, but like the sadness like it's different,
you know, like rehab is one time getting you back to where you need to be.
And then maintenance is what Ligeria Snead is doing on that knee, which will
never actually get better.
It's just about maintaining it as best as possible.
The quad injury is what he's rehabbing and that happened week five week
four and the season last year or week six against the Colts.
Yeah, I was against the Colts because he was laying face down after the Alec Pierce thing. Oh God, so embarrassing. But like,
that happened week six last year and his quad is still not good. That's kind of scary, right?
That's October. So, it seems set and everyone seems settled at cornerback because we know the three starters in their definitive.
But then you have Darryl Baker who's the direct backup to Snead.
But what's after that?
You know, Marcus Harris and then a bunch of undrafted free agents and they brought in another guy.
Name is losing.
They brought in another guy at cornerback off waivers to add in,
but, uh, orgery or something like that. Either way. No, that's the linebacker orgery. All these
waiver claims, man, I'm telling you, but either way, there's not a lot to, to feel confident in
to feel confident in after that top four guys.
So something to watch there is just, is Snead gonna bounce back?
Is that gonna be okay?
Cause things could go from good to holy crap
at cornerback very, very quickly.
But again, on tomorrow's episode,
I'm gonna be doing my offensive starters.
Who I think is gonna start week one.
Then we got Titans practice.
Later this week might do another mailbag on Friday.
53-man roster prediction starting next week.
So much content coming your way.
No offseason for Locked on Titans.
But with that being said, that's gonna do it for me today, folks.
As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
