Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Cam Ward BATTLES Justin Herbert, Secondary Issues & Run Game Must Get Going
Episode Date: October 29, 2025The Tennessee Titans take on the Los Angeles Chargers this week and it will be a battle of quarterbacks with Cam Ward facing Justin Herbert. If the Titans hope to get a win, they will need Ward to out...duel Herbert when the game is on the line. One of the issues is the Titans secondary is full of secondary players as all three starting cornerbacks at the beginning of the season are now gone and we will see three backup cornerbacks. This could ruin the game for the Titans against a great weapons group. Finally, if the Titans are to get a victory, they will need to take advantage in two areas -- run game and turnovers. Well, David, I feel like you're one of the hosts of the show and the Chargers matchup
with the Titans. It seems like we see each other every single year.
somehow these teams have just played a lot over the last five to six years it feels like
and they head into this game in two very different places with the Chargers obviously
having a pretty good season the Titans struggling a little bit coming into this game with
the Chargers being at 5 and 3 fighting for the division title playing a little bit better
football after maybe waning a little bit in the middle what's the big storyline for this team
headed into this game I would say the biggest story for the Chargers heading into this game
is you absolutely have no excuses you have to win this game like when you're going up against
this Tennessee Titans team uh you know the Chargers have a very tough schedule following this game
before they get to their by week in you know in three weeks from from tonight so the Chargers
just really they can't afford to lose this game they can't afford to overlook the Titans
there's absolutely no excuses the one thing the Chargers have been really good at during
Jim Harbaugh's tenure is beating the teams that they should beat and you know this year they
already had a bad loss against the Giants and they absolutely cannot play down to the level
of the Tennessee Titans on the offensive side as healthy they are as healthy as they've been in
the long time getting their left tackle Joe Alt back makes it just a tremendous difference
he's such a stabilizing force for the Chargers and they were able to run the ball more effectively
and pass the ball more effectively because Joe Alt is able to provide that protection that has
been sorely missing from the Chargers offense so both sides of the ball is playing better but
There's no excuses.
The Chargers have to win this football game.
Yeah, that makes sense for where you're at in your position,
especially the Titans aren't even like a scrappy bad team.
The Titans have been, you know,
they're negative 20 point differential,
40 more points than the next closest team.
So the Titans definitely are at the bottom of the barrel here.
But, you know, even with Titans fans knowing that,
you hope to see improvement from Cam Ward.
That's kind of what the big storyline for the Titans is at this point.
that they aren't a great team.
We know that they aren't going to win a ton of games,
especially playing a good team like the Chargers.
You just want to see Cam Ward and some of these young players
take a step forward, some of the offensive weapons like a Chimdeka
and Elyko Manor Gunner Helm as well.
Tage Spear is not a young weapon in his third season,
but still a young player on his rookie contract
that you want to see get more opportunities.
The Titans offensive line is something that you'd like to see
have a decent day.
But you're right about that Chargers offensive line.
It seems like it's been the lifeblood of the team.
And the good news for Chargers fans is
this is a good matchup for the Chargers offensive line.
The Titans edge rush has been a struggle all year.
They're missing Arden Key for the most part.
We'll see if he comes back in this game hasn't practiced
leading up to this recording right now.
Femiola Dejao, their second round pick is on IR with a broken leg.
So they're playing Jihad War.
Dremont Jones, who's had a sack in three straight games,
he's been pretty solid.
But, I mean, we're talking about Dremont Jones
is the number one edge rusher.
Other than that, I mean,
even the Titans practice squad edge rusher.
Ali Gay just went on IR this week with a knee injury.
So with Jeffrey Simmons likely not to play in this game
and his status up in the air and I would say more likely not to play,
you have Devonre sweat in the middle, Sebastian Joseph Day.
I don't really see a lot of other than Draymont Jones,
and he may be traded by the time that you hear this podcast
or by the time that the game rolls around.
Like, who really knows?
I don't think the matchup is all too difficult, I guess,
for the Chargers offensive line to
whether get things back on track
or just keep things on track as they roll forward.
Yeah, I think for this matchup in particular,
I guess looking at the other side of the ball,
looking at Cam Ward,
what I've noticed for him is he has some arm talent.
Like he absolutely does.
He's very raw.
He holds on the ball way too long.
And when he does that,
he tends to make mistakes.
And that's, you know,
obviously in reference to his six touchdown
and five interception, you know, stat line.
just that's what has been that's what I've noticed he's not incredibly mobile in the pocket
so I mean he's got a little bit of moving because he's not going to really run away from
anybody so I think if the chargers can like make him hold on to the football I think it's
going to be something that's going to be challenging for him when he's able to get the ball out
quickly and throw decisively he definitely has rare arm talent I just look at him as a quarterback
that's still very raw and still learning and kind of learning on the fly and I don't know if
That's going to be a very good recipe going up against Jesse Minter's defense.
I was literally about to say, you know, that's a perfect segue way to Jesse Mentor who obviously runs a very good scheme there.
There were some struggles in the middle of the season, but they still have the ability to play some great defense there with the Chargers.
I wanted to ask you about that because the Titans are obviously going to be looking for a new head coach after the season.
And Mentor is a guy who is kind of one of those defense.
We always think of the Wiz kids as the offensive guys.
But Mentor is one of those young defensive wizards there.
What's been your experience with Mentor in the season and a half that he's been around?
And do you think he would be a good option as a head coach going forward?
I think for Jesse Mentor, he turned around a unit last year that was perennially at the bottom of the league
under their former head coach, Brandon Staley, who by all accounts was a wonderkins, right?
He had one year where he was leading the number one defense in the NFL with the Rams.
and I'm sure the Chargers saw that was like, oh, man, that looks really cool.
Like, I wonder what Justin Herbert would look like with a really good defense.
And that just never materialized under Brandon Staley.
But when Jesse Minter came in, he immediately came in and turned around this defense.
And, you know, it was, you know, arguably the number one scoring defense in the league,
depending on it, on who you ask, because, you know, the Philadelphia Eagles were right there.
And you mess with a couple of numbers, and they're right there with it.
So I think for for him, I love the way.
he communicates I love the accountability that he takes the responsibility like for example when
they played the Colts and they got shredded he's like hey you know I don't put that on the players
I always look at myself first you know that was you know my failure and I need to make sure
that I'm putting these guys in the right positions to have success and I think the one thing I would
say if you're looking for drawback is when they played some of the more complete offenses
some of the more dangerous offenses in the league,
the results haven't been quite as as dominating as they have been
with some of the regular or worst teams in the league.
I think that's the one thing that you look at
and you would say,
maybe I need to see a little bit more consistency
against the better teams before I fully buy in on the philosophy.
I think when it's ran to perfection,
it's basically, hey, I'm going to limit the plays,
the big place.
I'm going to be a little bit more allowing on the run game, allow them to kind of to get that.
But it's death by a thousand paper cuts.
They want to make you execute all the way down the football field and basically wait for you to make a mistake.
And, you know, that's happened for the most part pretty well, but some of those better offenses like the Colts a few weeks ago made the Chargers defense look really bad.
Now, that was with a caveat of Cleo Mac playing 11 or 12 snaps.
And, you know, he's such a difference.
maker against the run that you know his presence is sorely missed but jesse minter as a leader
i'm fully already on board with him and his his coaching staff has been phenomenal their ability
to get guys ready on a short really really short notice get them in get them ready to play and
see them actually be productive is very very rare and something i haven't seen in previous
coaching staff so jesse minter i think he is absolutely a head coach i don't know if it's
this off season, but I have absolutely no doubt that he will be leading a team in very short
order. Yeah, it'll be soon. And it's funny, the numbers really do back up what you're saying.
I mean, the Chargers are a top 10 past defense in terms of total yardage, but they're also
one of the top 10 teams in the NFL and giving up yards after catch. So it's like, they're like not
giving up a lot of yards, but the yards that they do give up are the dink and dunk move arounds.
And that kind of leads me into the matchups for this game, because the Titans are going to need
some of their young players on offense that have yards after catchability to really step up
and go against, you know, those linebackers and those secondary players of the Chargers
and we'll get into matchups on both sides of the ball right now.

All right, Dave, let's continue today's cross over Thursday.
It's locked on Titans, locked on Chargers.
We talked about the big storylines in this game.
Now we dive into the big time matchups,
and I'm going to kind of continue where we were just at with the yards after catch.
I think that the Chargers have a real good defense.
The Titans don't have a ton of offensive weaponry,
but what they do have are a couple of guys that can make you pay after the catch.
And I look at a guy like Taji Spears at the running back position
who's gotten more involved lately.
He could catch a screen pass and take it 50 yards
and make a guy miss.
A guy like Chigacanquo at Tide End
who also may be a trade candidate for the Titans,
who knows if he'll be on the team by the time.
Usually the trades happen earlier in the week,
but we did just get a trade with the Eagles and the Jets,
so you never really know.
But Chigokanquo is a tight end that has great yards after catchability,
can take a quick, short pass, break a tackle, get upfield,
and then Chim D.K.
The Titans' rookie wide receiver,
out of Florida. It's kind of emerged in the last couple of weeks.
Seven catches, 93 yards last week, 4.3 speed.
He's a guy who can really separate from man coverage, get down the field.
He's a really good kick returner as well for the Titans.
I haven't checked this week, but he's been leading the NFL in total yards
for the AFC for quite some time now because of the kick returnability
and punt returnability.
So those guys might be, you know, Dave, when you're playing a team
that's not, you know, not quite as,
or should I say it the opposite way
when you're playing a team
that's a little bit better than you are
you kind of need some special things to happen
some magical moments
and one of those yards after catch guys
breaking a tackle on the secondary
the linebacker group of the Chargers
I think that could be one of the ways
the Titans find a few big plays
to keep them in it if they're able to do so
yeah I think when you look at the Chargers
linebackers I think there's kind of a stark contrast
in the skill sets that they bring to the table
which is kind of why they mesh
and they work really well together
they have Denzel Perriman who is that that kind of dominator in the run game right he brings the
hammer right he has that real stopping power he hits you and you get you go down that's the end of
the play with Deion Henley he is more of the coverage linebacker right he's a beast like he's a great
all-around player kind of had a couple of down weeks by his standards because I mean to me I think
he's one of the best young linebackers in the league just from an all-around skill set standpoint
being able to cover being able to run being able to be there and run
support being able to blitz like he really has a very well-rounded skill set so as far as like past
coverage uh really wouldn't be going after day on henley as much no but if if you can get you know
an opportunity where you're lined up on denzo pairman not quite the same level of coverage now
uh and those obvious passing downs are probably going to pull him off the field and probably put
troy die on the field if they need somebody covering he's a little bit better of a coverage linebacker
than uh you know denzo pererman is but they they all have
their you know things that they do that they bring to the table and i think you know that brings
me to what i think is one of the big matchups here is the titans line versus the chargers pass
rush uh the chargers pass rush is now complete with the return of the first ballot future
hall of famer calil mac really you know being back to being full go you know the first game
back against india as i mentioned only 11 or 12 snaps against the vikings i think he played over
40. So he was, you know, back to being who he was and the Chargers dominated that game,
especially the pass rush. They dropped. I mean, obviously, you know, the quarterback now is now
on IR on IR and done for the season. He should never have played in that game anyway. Carson
Wentz was, was, was already beat up and hurt and the Chargers made that a lot worse. But now they
have Khalil Mack and Tully Tuli Pelotu and Addafe OA, who has been a great addition to the
chargers, you know, pass rush. And the Titans line is allowed 10 pressures or less in back-to-back
games. So that's good for them. You know, that's improvements. But they're going to be going
up against a legitimate unit that will cause real havoc. So if the Titans struggle on those early
downs, get ready because the Chargers are going to release the hounds. Well, the problem is that the
Titans have historically struggled on early downs. They have the longest average yards to gain
on third downs in the NFL.
It's been very, very difficult on early downs
for the Titans to get anything going.
I do move to the other side of the ball
for my next matchup,
and something that Chargers fans may not be
fully paying attention to because the Titans are bad
and these are smaller moves and things like that
in the grand scheme of things.
The Titans have gotten rid of two of their starting cornerbacks
in trades so far this year.
They sent Jarvis Brownlee, Jr.,
a second year outside corner to the Jets.
He's been the Jets best player
in the last couple of weeks,
So that for a six-figure swap.
Yeah, awesome.
Love that.
And then they just traded Roger McCreary, their good slot cornerback to the Los Angeles rims.
Now, McCreery was on the last year of his deal.
The Titans weren't going to bring him back because he doesn't fit their skill set of the new regime.
All right, that makes sense.
But regardless, those two guys are out of the picture.
And now Legerius Sneed is on injured reserve with a quad injury where he missed most of the last season with that quad.
He'll probably never play for the Titans ever again, realistically.
They'll probably cut bait with him in the all season.
But the point is, the Titans have no cornerbacks.
The Titans are like even the defensive coordinator for the Titans,
DeNard Wilson was asked this week.
You guys know, especially a Jim Harbaugh team,
next man up, coach speak, the classic,
oh, we're going to, we believe in the next guy.
Bernard Wilson, the Titans defensive coordinator, said,
we always say next man up,
but I got to admit it's going to be hard without our three starting cornerbacks.
You're like, when he is even saying that in the media,
he is trying to say,
Whoever's hiring me next, this is not my fault.
He's literally saying they got rid of all my guys.
So I am worried about a really good wide receiver group right now
where Ladd McConkey is coming along after a slow start
and Quentin Johnston, who has been up and down, I know,
but he's had some good moments in there as well.
And then obviously you have the consummate veteran, Keenan Allen, in there.
I just think the Titans, and Trey Harris has had some good moments recently.
The rookie, I just think the Taurus,
Titans are going to have a heck of a time guarding the wide receiver group and then add
in Orronday Gadsden, the rookie tight end who's blowing up right now. I know that's a different
problem for the safeties and linebackers, but still somebody's got a cover and I just don't
think anybody can cover these weapons. Yeah, obviously that that was clearly one of my
other matchups. I mean, there's no surprise there. But yeah, the charges receivers are are very,
very good with Ladd McConkey, Keene, and Alan Quentin Johnson, all over 400 yards receiving.
They might not get anybody over 1,000, but they might have three or four guys in the
750 to 800 yard range, which is crazy.
And yeah, Rhonda Gadsden has been like supernova, like nuclei is gone nuclear the last
couple of weeks, 19 catches 309 yards in the last three games alone.
And if Justin Herbert can stay standing, yeah, he should be feasting over a Titans defense
and specifically secondary that is really just looking for guys to go out there and play.
I mean, anybody at this point to try to get them through this season, it's going to be
It's going to be tough, and yeah, if the Titans can't get any pass rush, Justin Herbert might be in for a big day.
Well, I guess the bad news for Titans fans, maybe the good news for Chargers fans is the Titans don't have a very good pass rush either.
So it could be difficult out there.
But hey, that's why they line up and play the game.
You never know what's going to happen.
And I'll tell you, there are a couple of things that the Titans absolutely have to do to win this game.
There are some things that the Chargers are going to need to do to win this game.
We'll talk about what will determine this match up right now.

All right, Dave, let's cap off.
Today's crossover Thursday episode, Locked on Titans, locked on Chargers.
We've talked the big storylines, we have talked the matchups to watch.
Now it's time to get into our keys to victory here, what we think will determine things,
and letting you kick it off here, a little southern hospitality in this final segment, you know what I mean?
What do you think the Chargers have to do to make sure that they win this game?
Yeah, I think three things here that the Chargers need to absolutely do to win this game is number one, play a clean game.
You know, they absolutely, you know, cannot shoot themselves in the foot with the turnovers.
I mean, I think one of the things, the reasons why they lost the Giants, 14 penalties over 100 yards, two bad turnovers.
Like, you can't give the Titans any extra opportunities with turnovers and bad penalties.
The offense has to keep cooking.
The Chargers offense is getting healthier and they've been putting points on the board.
last three games averaging 30 points per game they've also played some complimentary football 133
rushing yards over 300 passing yards over their last three games justin herbert has to continue to
use his legs when there's opportunities to do that he's a very very underrated scrambler a good runner
very very good athlete and they're going up against the defense that's ranked 29th in points allowed
at 28.8 per game and has given up 30 plus in back to back weeks um and then the last thing is
the chargers need to keep improving in the red zone
After being one of the worst scoring defenses in the red zone in the NFL,
they finally got right against the Vikings where they were successful on three or their four trips.
The Chargers got to get touchdowns.
Touchdowns over field goals.
The Titans are decent in the Red Zone.
They're 15th so far this year.
And, you know, last year in a really bad loss to the Cardinals, the Chargers kicked sixth field goals.
So you can't do that.
You know, you cannot do that in this game.
You've got to put points on the board.
You've got to score touchdowns.
And over the last four weeks, the Chargers red zone defense is fourth worst in the league.
If this doesn't improve, the Titans could hang around.
So it got to be better on both sides of the ball in the red zone if you want to win this game.
Yeah, 100%.
I go back to the turnovers that you started with because when looking at what is kind of doom the Chargers in their three losses this year,
they've lost the turnover battle five to one.
That's correct.
Because the Titans don't get a ton of pressure on defense, it makes it hard to create turnovers now.
those things kind of go hand in hand.
But again, when you're the Titans and you're one and seven
and you're playing a five and three Chargers team,
you kind of need to get lucky to win the game.
You need the Chargers to be bad more than just yourself to be good.
The best version of the Titans,
I don't know if it beats an average day for the Chargers.
So the Titans kind of need the Chargers to play poorly too
and winning that turnover battle would help.
But I think one place where the Titans don't necessarily need luck
to get it to go their way, but it can go their way,
is in the run game.
The Titans' run game has been terrible.
bottom three in the NFL and running the football. They just can't do it. It is a bit of a
surprise. I think the offensive line has been better than maybe what some of the numbers say,
but they have not been better than what the numbers say in the run game. And that's been a bit
of a shock. But over the last, you know, five weeks, last week against the Vikings, you're right,
the Chargers dominated. They only gave up 34 rushing yards. But the four weeks before that,
161 in the loss to the Giants, 163 in the loss to the commanders, 137 and the win
over the Dolphins by a little bit, 120 and the loss to the Colts.
Now, the Titans' offenses aren't those offenses, but at the end of the day, there is
some susceptibility to running the football on the bad days for the Chargers.
So if the Titans can get some turnovers and run the football and keep the ball out of Justin
Herbert's hand, which it's crazy, we barely had to talk about Justin Herbert because there's
so many other things going on.
Like, that's the formulas.
Keep the ball away from the Chargers' explosive offense that it can expose your defense.
and for the Chargers offense to give the Titans a few more opportunities to do that with some
turnovers. It's the classic underdog formula, run the ball, get turnovers, but that is what the
Titans have to do to find a way to win any game, not just this one.
No, yeah, I mean, you absolutely spelled it out for the Chargers and when they lose the
turnover battle, when they give up and just get absolutely gashed in the running game, then yeah,
like the opponents have a much better chance to win.
It absolutely has shown itself throughout the entire season.
you know hey honestly like i like tony paulard but the guy who scares me in the backfield is taj spiers
i mean that guy's got the home run ability like tony pollard's a physical runner like he he runs bigger
than i think that he really is and like i see that and i appreciate that you know um but taj
spears is the home run hitter he's the guy that can take it the distance and he's the guy that
kind of scares me in the backfield and yeah i mean that's definitely one thing's going into
every game that the chargers play that the the rushing attack going against them is definitely
he's scary now when calil mac is back in the lineup he makes a huge difference because right
he can actually set the edge he has the strength the physicality and the violence to be able to set
the edge and not because that's been a huge huge issue when he's not there it's like night and day
like opposing offenses were like well just run it to the outside they can't touch him and like it
happened believe me like they they did it to great effectiveness because there was not anybody there
that could really physically set the edge now that mac is there he can do that at a real and tully
can do that too but they would just run away from tully so now that they can't do that it's a lot
more difficult for opponents to run the ball to the outsides but still an issue that every week i am
very concerned about yeah it's going to be something that the titans are going to have to find a way
to run the football if they have any chance but i got to tell you you know i don't know about
score prediction all that but i i would imagine the chargers find a way to pull this one
out i would imagine you feel similar yeah i think the the the chargers would have to absolutely give
the titans the game to to win this one i mean i mean no disrespect but these two teams are in
completely different um you know kind of levels right now the chargers are trying to get to a
playoff spot and and the the titans are are trying to figure things out and trying to see who they
have and see what the future is for their franchise and and quite frankly the chargers cannot
allow themselves to lose this game they can't they have to show up they have to give
the Titans their respect by going up and doing what they should do, which is winning this game.
They absolutely can't disrespect them by overlooking them, looking towards the Steelers.
That can't happen because that's how you lose games like this.
The Chargers have to come in focused.
I think with Jim Harbaugh, they will.
And yeah, I do expect the Chargers to win this game.
I don't think it's honestly going to be particularly close.
Yeah, if the Chargers play a decent brand of football, they should be all right.
But, hey, Cam Ward is playing better.
The Titans get the run game going.
I guess that's the hope that Titans fans should be hanging on to.
But with that being said, that is today's crossover Thursday episode.
