Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Cam Ward BETTER THAN THIS After HORRID Performance Against Jets, But Concern Grows
Episode Date: September 14, 2026Cam Ward played absolutely terrible for the Tennessee Titans in their Week 1 loss to the New York Jets, but Ward is certainly better than this. Maybe things don't get better any time soon, but believi...ng Ward can do more is certainly reasonable. However, there are some things that will not get better and that might include Robert Saleh's run defense. Saleh has routinely shown that he is willing to give up yards to prevent big plays and touchdowns. Similarly, the pass rush may not get better either with the lack of talent in the pass rush. On offense, the offensive line should improve, but their performance in Week 1 wasn't as bad as it may seem. Finally, Carnell Tate should have better days soon too because he was already close to a monster outing if a few things broke his way. There's no doubt, Cam Ward was absolutely miserable against the New York Jets, but I know that he will play better.
I'll tell you what won't get better as well on today's edition of Locked on Titans.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast. I am your host, Tyler Rollin Titans.

We're going to talk about what I think will get better for the Titans, plus what I
think will not get better for the Titans.
I'll tell you why the Titans' offensive line will get better because it was already better
than what you think.
I'll tell you why I have concerns about the pass rush getting better on the defensive side
of the ball, but we got to start with Cam Ward.
Cam Ward is going to play better football.
That is all I know.
Cam Ward is going to play better than this.
I refuse to believe that the player that I know that Cam Ward is
is going to go out with 16 more versions of this.
I refuse to believe it.
It can't happen.
Cam Ward can be debated how good he is, how good he isn't,
but what I know for certain is Cam Ward is a better football player
than what we've seen him be in the first two preseason games
and then this first game against the Jets.
He is a better football player than this.
He is not this bad.
Now look, I am not going to get on here and tell you
that I still believe Cam Ward's taking us to the promised land.
Cam Ward's QBee's the future of the franchise.
Listen, if your belief in that hasn't been shaken a little bit,
I don't know what to tell you.
The only fair place that you could possibly be right now on Cam Ward is a yellow light.
There's no way you could be a green light of, hey, this guy is without a doubt,
our future going to be the Titans quarterback that takes us to the Super Bowl championship.
Face of the franchise, we got our guy, we're good to go for the next decade.
But look, Camworth, that's the green light.
There's no way you could be there right now.
I can't accept anybody telling me they have a lot of.
option, or a logical opinion, and saying their green light go on Cam.
Now, red light I also think is unfair.
You can't say right now, Cam is an absolute bust.
If he does give you 16 more games like this,
if Cam Ward plays the rest of the year and looks like this, then fine.
You can take it. He's a bust.
He's a bust. Sure.
But I refuse to believe that.
And I'm not even, again, I'm not even up here selling you the dream of Cam Ward.
I still believe.
I just know, for a fact, Cam Ward's going to play better than this.
There's just no way.
There's just no way.
And maybe he's not starting quarterback in the NFL, face of the franchise, savior, all that.
Maybe he's not.
But I know that he's better than this.
I know it.
Because I just got done watching the tape.
and the film breakdown is out on the Tick-Tac Titans YouTube channel right now
came out before this episode of Locked on Titans Drop.
So you need to go watch the tape.
But the tape was worse.
The tape was worse.
And I mean, there's no excuses either.
There's no excuses.
Don't get in my comments and tell me,
oh, the O line, who could be successful with that O line?
The Titans' offensive line wasn't even that bad.
and we're going to talk about that.
Cardinal Tate should have had a massive day.
And we're going to talk about that.
Cam Ward was the biggest problem
with the Tennessee Titans offense yesterday.
Not the run game, not the O line,
not the play calls, not the way.
It was Cam.
It was Cam.
It's not just the miss throws,
the three lollipops out of bounds,
one to Tate, one to I.
One to Pollard,
that are out of bounds and give his players no chance.
The dirt ball to Tajay and Wondale.
It was the throws that he just didn't make.
And I put a clip out on Twitter,
just two plays out of my film breakdown,
where Cam is literally hurting the offensive line.
There are guys open.
He doesn't throw to them.
Then he drifts back or runs into a sack.
on the Chim Dike play
where he tosses it up to himself
and plays hot potato for no reason.
Jim Dek's wide open on a checkdown.
Just check it out.
Just boom.
And he's got a one-on-one opportunity.
As a guy who's great in space,
he might make a guy miss and go.
Like, it could be a touchdown.
All you got to do is checkdown
right out into the flat.
But instead, Cam drops his head
and literally goes juggernaut
like he's an X-man
and goes head first into the offensive line,
defensive line.
And people would say, oh, the O line's trash.
And then on one play, actually there were two plays,
the Titans ran the same exact play twice,
and Cam missed them both times.
But it's an outrout against zone coverage.
And Wondale Robinson is open on one of them,
and Cornel Tate is open on another,
and Cam is staring at him.
And he just doesn't throw it.
And instead, because he doesn't throw it on time
in rhythm to an open guy.
He backs up in the pocket
and then he rolls out and
throws it away or steps out of bounds
and gets nothing. On one of them
he ended up rolling out and throwing it down
to, it was the one that Tate
was open. He ends up throwing it
scrambling out
and throwing it. But it's like the Calvin Ridley pass
against Denver in week one last year.
Calvin Ridley was wide open
on the crosser and Cam missed him.
And then Cam backed up into the
end zone scrambled around and then
threw off his back foot and found Calvin Ridley and everybody was like,
whoa, Cam Ward, what a play!
But the only reason he had to make the Superman play
is because he messed up the Clark Kent play.
And he did it multiple times yesterday too.
Cam Ward was the biggest problem with the Tennessee Titans offense yesterday.
Period.
The film proves it.
The numbers prove it.
The Titans gave up 13 pressures.
four of those were Cam Ward's fault.
One of them was on Tony Powell.
So, I think it might have been 14 total,
but the Titans' offensive line was only responsible
for 10 pressures.
Cam was responsible for four.
The Titans gave up three sacks yesterday.
Cam Ward was responsible for two of them.
And one of them, Cam Ward literally just stepped out of bounds
when he could have just thrown,
he could have just literally
tossed the ball to the sideline.
He's literally on the sideline,
just toss the ball out.
But instead he steps out of bounds one yard short,
gives a free sack to David Bailey
and puts a sack on his offensive line,
and then I have to see the comment section say that the O lines terrible.
When Cam Ward was as much,
if not more responsible for the pressure that he faced
and the sacks that he took
than the O line.
I'm not going to, again, like with Cam Ward.
I'm not here to sell you that the Titans
offensive line played awesome.
But again, the quarterback
is making the offensive line look worse.
I told you this last year too.
The O line isn't great,
but it's better than it looks because Cam is not hitting people on time,
not hitting people in rhythm,
fading back into pressure,
holding the ball longer,
stepping out of bounds for sacks
instead of throwing it away.
like Cam was the biggest problem
and there's no way
the guy that I saw
the last eight games of the year last year
10 touchdowns, one interception
94 passer rating
1,000 yards
there's no way that that guy
with worse coaching and worse weapons
and worse offensive line play
there's no way that that guy
isn't going to play better football.
I just can't.
What I saw on tape,
I refuse to believe that we're going to get 16 more games of that
and be talking about archmanning.
Like, I just, I can't believe it.
I refuse to believe
that that's what Cam Ward is and that's who he's going to be.
With better weapons, better aligned, better coaching.
I refuse.
I can't believe that.
So I'm not here to tell you,
hey, Cam Ward's still the franchise quarterback,
but I know he's going to play better than this.
I know it.
But with that being said,
what about the defense?
What about the pass rush?
What about the run defense?
Well, folks,
unfortunately,
I'm not going to be able to tell you
that I think that is going to get better.

Fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast.
Again, I'm going over what I think will get better for the Titans
and what won't get better for the Titans after disaster loss to the New York Jets in week one.
I told you why I think Cam Ward will play better football.
He's just a better player than what we're seeing.
right now, but I want to move to the defensive side of the ball.
We're going to talk about why the offensive line is going to get better,
but it's already better than what you expect.
And I teased it a little in the first segment when we talked about Cam,
but the O line, we got to have a real conversation there,
but a bigger problem for the Titans is the pass rush.
And I don't think it's going to get better.
And I've had concerns all all season, all preseason long,
about the Tennessee Titans pass rush,
saying Jacob Martin is a starting edge rusher.
Femiola Dejo is not a pass rusher right now.
Keldrick Falk is a development player
who's not going to be ready to rush the passer week one.
And all I heard was, oh, it's going to be fine.
You know, like, oh, you're worried too much.
It's the preseason.
The interior defensive line is going to be so good.
Well, John Franklin Myers did dittily squat.
He was a ghost in that game.
Revenge game for him against a former team.
John Franklin Meyer,
did nothing.
He could have been Sebastian Joseph Day
or Nazir Stackhouse or
T.R. T.R. T.R. T.R. T.R. T.R. T.R. T.R. T.R. T.R. T.R.
that made more than one game. He literally did in that game.
At all.
in the pass rush.
One pressure he got credited for.
Jeffrey Simmons was the only guy on the team
that had more than one pressure.
The Titans had nine pressures as a team.
Simmons had three of them.
That means there were six different guys who only got one.
Gino Smith had the cleanest pockets in week one
of any quarterback that's played so far.
There's Monday night with Bo Nix and Patrick Mahomes.
Maybe.
But, I mean, this Titans entire defense,
the entire team, we talked about it throughout the all season,
after Sala was hired,
after the money was spent.
Jermaine Johnson, John Franklin Myers,
Solomon Thomas, Jeffrey Simmons extension,
Keldrick Falk draft pick.
Femi is a second round pick.
You have a first round pick, a second round pick,
a first round pick,
number one,
D-Lignment in the NFL,
top three interior D-Lyman and Sacks last year,
all on that defensive line.
It is the heart and soul of the team.
If the Titans D-Line isn't really good,
they are going to suck
Well, the Titans D-line was not good in this game.
In the pass rush in particular.
Useless.
Literally didn't even touch.
Gino said after the game,
I don't think I got touched.
I don't think he did get touched.
The Titans got pressures like they were around him.
But I don't think that Gino Smith got contacted in the game.
And for a fast and violent team that's built on this aggressive,
penetrating defensive line.
Robert Salah's calling card.
We're getting up the field and we're attacking and we're...
To not even touch a quarterback,
the Jets have a really good offensive line.
I think it's better than people realize,
but it ain't like the Eagles or something,
which, who do the Titans play next?
Hilarious.
You know, like this offensive line
isn't the Broncos.
It's not like an elite unit or something like that.
It's good.
tackles her loss. But come on.
Dylan Parham, Josh Myers.
We can't get a touch on the quarterback.
And again, the problem is
John Franklin Myers is a very good
interior defensive lineman. But he's not like
Jeff or Byron Murphy or Leonard Williams. He wasn't like a top 10
defensive tackle in the NFL.
Really good pass rusher and the Broncos had a lot of talent.
And he got to be a role player. Well, now,
he's one of the stars of the Titans
and he's got to produce
every week
and they're going to be keying on him.
And with the way the Titans rotate their defensive line,
him and Jeff aren't always out there together.
Sometimes he is Jeff.
And he's got to be the big dog in the middle
that takes all the attention and wins.
And is he capable?
And I warned you guys about Jermaine Johnson.
Jermaine Johnson is not a good pass rusher.
He's a run...
He's Bud Dupree.
He's just Bud Dupree.
He's not a 10-sac guy.
He's never been that.
And some people thought he was, and I just don't understand.
Keldrick Falkin Femmy are going to be developing the guys,
and Jacob Martin is 30 years old.
His career high in sacks is five and a half.
Jacob Martin is a, you know, a bench player
who's starting right now as an edge rusher.
I don't think the pass rush is going to get better.
I think this defensive line is going to be a disappointment.
And I'm here to tell you, the run defense.
is not going to get better anytime soon,
and that's your fault if you thought
the run defense was going to be good.
Robert Sala never
has good run defenses,
ever. He has told you
himself, I do not care
about yards, I care about points.
Robert Sala will let you run the ball
all up and down the field in his four-man fronts
with two high safeties. He does
not care. You're not having explosive
plays in the passing game, and I don't
want you to score points because when the
red zone, tights,
when it tightens up in the red zone, you're not going to have the same space to run the football.
The Titans were never going to have a great run defense. Robert Zala does not care.
He wants to stop the pass, prevent big plays in the passing game, and prevent points.
He has literally said it publicly in press conferences before.
So the run defense is not going to get better.
And that is by design.
They're willing to sacrifice the run game to stop the pass game.
And you just wonder if that's an antiquated approach
in the way that the NFL is right now
with heavy tight end looks.
The Jets just lined up in heavy personnel
and bullied the Titans.
Multiple tight ends, four tight ends,
three, two tight ends,
just heavy personnel and bullied the Titans.
They're not putting enough people on the O line.
You know, Robert Salo wants to play as 425.
You know, I just don't know,
if the philosophy that the Titans are using on defense
is going to work in the current cycle of offense
we're in in the NFL?
I don't know.
I don't know.
That remains to be seen.
So I don't think the pass rush or the run defense
is going to get much better.
But here's the thing I will tell you.
Watching the defensive tape,
the Titans have a 19-play drive against them,
and they've given up 10 points.
Then Chim D.K. fumbles
and the Titans' defense comes back out.
The Titans' offense ran three plays in the second quarter.
The defense was nuked.
It's week one in 100-degree heat and humidity.
The defense was nuked after the second quarter.
I'm here to tell you,
I don't think the defense was as bad as everyone was active.
The secondary gave up three bad plays.
The corner route to Garrett Wilson,
which was a miscommunication between,
Alante Taylor and Amani Hooker in cover 4.
There was a miscommunication in cover 3
with Garrett Wilson as well on the sideline.
And then Garrett Wilson got a crossing route
and man coverage on Cordell Flot.
That wasn't a blown coverage.
That was just Garrett Wilson beat Cordell Flot.
And guess what?
Garrett Wilson should beat Cordell Flot.
I don't think that Cordell Flot
as a $15 million a year corner,
which is average corner money,
I don't think that he should
win one-on-one against Garrett Wilson, a man coverage on a crossing route across the field.
So I know it sounds crazy,
but to me, the offense and the special teams
were way bigger problems than the Titans defense yesterday.
The Titans' defense kind of got hung out to dry, in my opinion.
They didn't play that bad.
There were a couple plays here and there that weren't good,
but the defense was not as bad as my reaction included.
I am also guilty, hands up.
The defense was not quite as bad,
but I'm just telling you, the pass rush not being good,
and the run defense, not being good,
I don't think those are going to get a lot better.
But the coverage in the back end,
that's why San Francisco's defense last year
was last in the NFL in sacks,
but they were still a good defense.
Why? Because the past coverage was so good
that you could run the ball
and you're not going to get sacked,
but they're going to limit what you're able to do.
So I think the Titans past defense
and the coverage is actually going to get better.
It's the run defense and the pass rush
that I don't think is going to get better for this defense.
Now, with that in mind,
the Titans' offensive line is going to get better
because they're already better than you thought.

Again, we're talking about what will and what won't get better for the Tennessee Titans
after their week one devastating loss to the New York Jets.
I talked about why I think Cam Ward will play better football.
We talked about on defense.
Well, I think the secondary will play better, but the pass rush and the run defense,
I am not so certain about.
We're going to get into the offensive line.

But with that being said,
the Tennessee Titans offensive line is going to play better.
And quite frankly, they have already,
played better than what most people think.
And going back and watching the tape for me,
I was shocked by how much better the offensive line was
than it felt like in real time.
And again, a lot of that is Cam Ward was the problem
on some of the plays where I blamed the offensive line.
Some of these plays where Cam Ward is falling back,
running back, dropping back in the pocket,
10, 20 yards and then just tossing it out of bounds, chucking it out.
Some of those, I'm like, God, the pressure's on him right away,
and then I watch it on tape and I'm like, oh, the ball should have been out.
Oh, that guy was open.
Why didn't we throw it there?
Oh, okay.
And some of them, listen, I am not absolving the offensive line of blame.
The offensive line wasn't great in the game.
Like, I'm not here to tell you that.
don't misconstrue what I'm saying
as the offensive line was great, it was not.
But it wasn't the outright disaster
that everybody tries to act like.
And a lot of it is, people want to excuse Cam Ward,
people want to keep believing in Cam Ward
and blame something else.
So they blame the O line.
But again, the Titans' offensive line
only had 10 pressures allowed.
The Titans offensive line was only responsible for one of the three sacks.
Cam Ward's fault on the other two.
four pressures. Cam Ward allowed himself.
Other pressures that were because of the offensive line, yes,
but Cam Ward had open guys and held the ball too long.
I would say that there are some mixed in there too.
So the Titans' offensive line, I thought this was interesting,
was actually middle of the road in pass-blocking efficiency from pro football focus,
pass-block win rate, ESPN stuff, middle of the road.
the road there. The Titans' offensive line was far from one of the worst offensive line performances
of the week. The Titans were very middle of the road, and the Titans ran for five yards per carry.
They had an early down run efficiency of fourth best EPA per play in the NFL running on
early downs. The Titans' offensive line had some stuffed runs, but it's pretty good runs.
They just literally could not stay on the field to run the ball more
because the passing offense was so bad
that it couldn't sustain drives when guys were open.
And then you get down 20 to 3, 23 to 3, this and that.
You're down all these points.
And you have to throw in the second half.
You can't just keep running the rock.
So the Titans offensive line ran the ball.
all right.
The pass blocking was a little less than okay.
Dan Moore wasn't very good,
but J.C. Latham,
J.C. Latham completely shut down David Bailey.
I mean, J.C. Latham gave up two pressures.
One of them, I disagree with.
I don't think it should be a pressure.
Cam was able to slide up fine and throw the football.
He pushed David Bailey pass.
So one of the pressures I didn't think,
should be called a pressure.
And then another pressure was a chip where Gunner Helm
chipped the defensive end,
and it ended up making it harder on J.C. Latham to block him
because it pushed him inside of J.C. Latham.
And J.C. Latham would have done better without the chip.
So those are the two pressures that J.C. Latham gave up.
Otherwise, Latham was actually really, really good in the game.
He could have been better in run blocking, but in pass blocking,
pretty solid.
Carmona.
Again, Carmona had a couple of pressures that he gave up.
Carmona wasn't terrible.
By any stretch.
Like, the Titans' offensive line was not terrible in this game.
Cam Ward was way worse than the O-line was in this game.
That's what you need to accept as a truth.
Cam Ward was worse than the O-line.
That's what the tape shows.
So, I think the Titans' offensive line is going to get better.
the Titans offensive line will improve.
I mean, the Titans gave up three sacks.
Two of them were Cam Ward's fault.
If you do three times 17, that's 51.
I mean, that's, you know, right around where they were last year,
and two of those are on Cam.
So I think the Titans' offensive line is going to get better.
And let me say this.
This is the last thing I'll say.
Cornell Tate should have had a monster day.
Cam missed him on both crossers,
the one that he threw and the one that he didn't throw,
which would have been 15 to 20 yard gains right there because he was open.
Cam missed him on a back shoulder fade,
didn't even give him a chance to go get it.
He didn't even jump to go jump up and try to catch it
because it was five feet over his head.
I don't know if he would have caught that one,
but there was a curl route that he could have hit.
There were two out routes that should have been hit to Carnell Tate.
Cornell Tate should have had five or six catches for 100 yards.
So Carnell Tate's going to play better.
Carnal Tate played well.
He got open and he didn't get accurate balls.
And they did exactly what I said.
They put Cornell Tate in the slot and condensed him
and they ran him on crossing routes against man coverage.
Just like I said in the game plan preview episode.
And it was open.
And Cam didn't throw it one time and then missed him on the other.
Just like in the preseason when he missed him on the crossing route.
So anyway, Tate is going to have better numbers.
So he's a good player.
But that's going to do it for me today, folks.
Let me know what you think is going to get better
and what won't get better down below or on social media.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland,
and this was Locked on Titans.
