Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Cam Ward REPLACEMENT & COMPETITION Plans Include Justin Herbert & Arch Manning

Episode Date: October 12, 2026

The Tennessee Titans' season is going horribly and they are functionally eliminated from the playoffs. This leaves fans wanting change, but out of the all of the possible moves, the most likely change... right now is Cam Ward's status as starting quarterback. That is an easier move for the franchise than replacing all of the coaches or general manager.  If the Titans go full replacement for Ward, trading for Justin Herbert or drafting a rookie like Arch Manning could be something that charges up the fan base. However, the likely move will be adding some veteran competition and names like Mac Jones or a reunion with Marcus Mariota are on the table. LOCKED ON TITANS EVERYDAY CLUB: https://lockedontitans.supercast.com/ Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/product/tic-tac-titans-polo/255?cp=true&sa=true&sbp=false&q=false Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@LockedOnTitans Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Gameday Men's HealthBook your complimentary test and consult at https://join.gamedaymenshealth.com/reasons_to_choose_gameday-1201?utm_source=lockedon&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=NFL&utm_network=lockedon&utm_adgroup=corp&ghl_tag=national,corpOdooGreat organizations win because operations matter. Starting point is 00:00:01 think the Tennessee Titans are going to make any big changes in 2026, but in 2027, I think quarterback is the most likely shakeup. And I'm going to tell you exactly what that's going to look like on today's edition of Locked on Titans. You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast. I am your host, The Rolling Titans fans. Today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast is brought to you by Kaushi for a limited time. Download Kaushi.
Starting point is 00:00:43 Use the code locked on to get $25 when you trade $25. Kalsi, trade what's next on today's show. We're going to talk about some potential competition for Cam Ward in 2027. I think Mack Jones is my number one option. We're going to talk about some potential replacements for Cam Ward in 2027 and trading for Justin Herbert is at the top of my list. But we got to start with a conversation about what can change for the Tennessee Titans and what's not going to change with the Tennessee Titans.
Starting point is 00:01:16 I continue to tell you, we are not going to see any big changes for the Titans. Go down the list. Robert Sala, he's not going to get fired during the season. Quite frankly, I don't think that the Titans can fire Robert Sala. after the season either. I will continue to explain if you fire Robert Sala after going one and done,
Starting point is 00:01:40 if you do that, after you fire Brian Callahan after just two years and he didn't even get full two seasons. After you fired Mike Vrable, who is a respected coach in the community, so you fired him, which makes you look extra stupid,
Starting point is 00:01:56 you fired Brian Callahan, which he may have deserved it, but to other potential, coaches, oh man, the Titans will just fire me in a second. I'm not going to go there. And that's why a guy like Ben Johnson wouldn't even take an interview with the Titans. And why John Harbaal didn't even wait for the Titans to show up for their visit? These are the reasons.
Starting point is 00:02:14 Because why would you go play for that dysfunctional organization? And you think that that's going to get better if they fire Robert Salah after one and done. You simply cannot do that. And then maybe Brian Daible. People have changed Brian Daibel out. I've had people say, hey, why don't they give Luke Stalker a try? Brian Daible thinks that he is a veteran head coach, and I've got to tell you, Cam Ward is playing terrible.
Starting point is 00:02:39 If you got Brian Daible on Truth Serum, you said, hey, Brian, I think you need to have your play calling duties revoked. He would tell you, well, give me a real quarterback. Go watch the tape of what this guy's doing every week. And the open guys, he's missing in the end zone and the route concepts that are perfect for the zone coverages that we're seeing that he just doesn't throw in the clean pocket that he's abandon and how he panics and throws it to the checkdown in two seconds
Starting point is 00:03:03 when his other options were open. Brian Daible is not going to fall on the sword for Cam Ward here. Brian Daible is not going to let the world think that he is the big problem here. This is his career on the line. This will define whether he gets another head coaching opportunity or not. He's not going to fall on the sword for Cam Ward. If Cam keeps playing like this all year, Brian Daibble is going to recommend bringing in a replacement,
Starting point is 00:03:28 and they'll probably keep Robert Sala and Brian Dable and go with one of the plans that we talk about when we talk about the campaigns. But I'm just here to tell you, Brian Dable ain't giving up play calling duties or getting demoted. Brian Dable will quit and leave the team before he gets demoted as the play caller to Luke Stalker.
Starting point is 00:03:47 That ain't happened. And I appreciate the relentless optimism of the people who asked about these things because they're just searching for anything to make the team better, but that's not going to change. Sala has raved about calling plays. I'm so angry. Calling plays on defense.
Starting point is 00:04:06 It keeps him connected to the game. He can feel the game. He can feel the defense. He's not going to give that up a month and a half into his last chance to be a head coach. He's going to go out doing it his way. And he wants to call plays on defense. So they're not going to give to Gus Bradley. And we don't want to give him to Gus Bradley anyway.
Starting point is 00:04:26 I promise you. Gus Bradley is a good teacher, a good installer, good in the game plan room, a wise veteran coach who's been through a lot, but he doesn't have that aggressiveness and chest like ready to do it to call plays anymore. I'm sorry, I just don't see that as a good option. He has not been a good play caller on defense for a while, even if I think he's a good teacher of Robert Salas defense. So you're not going to get a play calling change.
Starting point is 00:04:54 There are no big roster moves to make. The Titans aren't going to, one, they're 0 and 5. They're not going to trade assets away for people to help improve the team. The Titans need to sell pieces away, which we're going to talk about on tomorrow's episode because, guys, it's time. I'm not going to spoil it, but it's time. So we'll talk about trades tomorrow and what the Titans need to do going forward to get the most out of this season because they ain't going to be on the field.
Starting point is 00:05:21 But there is no guy to trade for during this season. There's no free agent to sign off the street. You want to fire Mike Borgonzi and what's that going to do in the middle of the year when the roster's set? Nothing. So they're not going to change play callers. They're not going to change the roster fundamentally.
Starting point is 00:05:40 They're not going to fire anybody up top right now. Quarterback. It comes down to quarterback. Are they going to put Mitch Trubisky in? Well, Robert Salah came out and reaffirmed after the game. Cam Ward is our quarterback all season long if he's held. Cam Ward is our starting quarterback. Now, maybe they abandoned that eventually
Starting point is 00:06:01 because you're only as good as your last press conference. Maybe he changes in mind. They go to Mitch Trubisky. I have well documented why I hate that idea. They need to play Cam Ward all season long for better or for worse. Sounds like Robert Sala agrees with me. I hope he sticks to it. But again, the point is no changes are coming.
Starting point is 00:06:22 And they may go 0-17. Look at the schedule. Who are they going to beat? they got at Indy this week. Can they keep up with Indy's offense that is going to score points? Then they play Cleveland, maybe. But Cleveland's better than the Titans right now. It would be an upset.
Starting point is 00:06:40 They're not beating Cincinnati's offense in Cincinnati. Jacksonville, Dallas, Jacksonville, out of the buy. They aren't beating any of those three offenses. Even if the Titans defense has a decent day, the offenses are going to be able to keep up with those. Then you have Washington, December 6th, week 13. Maybe they get that. at Detroit, not keeping up with that offense.
Starting point is 00:07:01 Indianapolis again, maybe by the end of the season, the Titans are playing better football, maybe. At Las Vegas, maybe. Titans never beat Pittsburgh, week 17, no way they're beating Pittsburgh, even at home. And then Houston, Houston is not going to be resting players. They're not going to have any kind of hold on any certainty with the way that they've started.
Starting point is 00:07:18 So the Titans very well might go 0 and 17, and no one's coming to save them. The only way through is through. They have to just hunker down as a group and try to get better. And again, if something does change, if something does change going forward, it will be in 2027 and what will that be? Again, I don't think Robert Sala gets fired.
Starting point is 00:07:45 I don't think that Brian Daibald gets fired. I don't think that Mike Morgonzi gets fired. I explained why with the coaching staff before, but with Mike Borganzi, do you really want an off-schedual front office situation again? Do you really want a GM and a head coach that weren't brought in together? And then we do the same thing. Robert Sala gets fired after that season.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Now the general managers alone, he hires his own coach, and we're just repeating the cycle over and over. So I think that it's something does change in 2027 next year, a big change. The only option is quarterback. The only option is quarterback. And you have two different paths that you can go. Either, A, you bring in veteran competition, or B, you go bold and outright replace Cam Ward entirely.
Starting point is 00:08:44 And I'll be honest with you. If you lined up all of the options that we're going to talk about today, my number one option would be an outright replacement and to go trade for Justin Herbert. So that's what I would do, but there are other options. And I'm going to tell you exactly what options there are and what I like the best in the replacement option because also in replacement includes another draft that. Do want to let you know that today's episode is brought to you by Cal She.

And let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. Again, we just talked about why I don't think there are any changes coming in 2026, but 27, the most likely change is at quarterback, and there are two paths that the Titans can go down. They can either add veteran competition, which for the record, I think is the most likely solution, is the Titans add veteran competition. Mack Jones is my favorite on that list, but we're going to go over that list in detail at the end of the show for now.
Starting point is 00:12:11 replacement options. That would be the most bold move by the Titans is to outright get rid of Cam Ward, give up on the Cam Ward experiment entirely from the get-go and go out and make a big-time move. And again, there are two paths within this one path, drafting a rookie high in the draft, or, like I'm about to tell you, make a big-time trade.
Starting point is 00:12:37 and making a big-time trade at quarterback comes from this angle. If the Titans, and shout-up my guy Will Lomas from Titan-sized, who I saw say this online, and it's a great point. If the Titans had a league average starter right now, league average NFL starter, not even elite, just league average, 16th, 17th best quarterback in the league, whoever you determine that to be. How many wins do they have right now?
Starting point is 00:13:11 And don't think that this is an argument for Mitch Trubisky. Mitch Trubisky is not a league average starting quarterback. He's a league average backup to maybe a decent backup. Okay? So it's not the same. If the Titans had a league average starter right now, they're two and three. They're one and four at best,
Starting point is 00:13:32 because they would have beat the Giants. But you could make the argument they could have beaten the Eagles. You could make the argument that potentially they could have came back against the Baltimore Ravens in the second half if they would have had a better first half and then Lamar went out.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Now, I think saying that they would be three and two, Eagles, Giants, Ravens, that is, to me, that's too aggressive to make a proper argument. I think that's too over the line for people to take that serious. But if you wanted to tell me that the Titans would be two and three
Starting point is 00:14:07 with a win over the Eagles and a win over the Giants, I couldn't argue with you. Cam has been that bad. And because the Titans' offensive line had a bad day against the Texans, now everybody's doing the, oh, Cam Ward has no help. Cam Ward can't do anything.
Starting point is 00:14:25 What's he supposed to do, even though the O line was top five, past protection in the first four games of the year, one bad game, and now, nope, it's not Cam Ward's fault anymore. Everything he did before that, everything else on tape, not his fault, O line, all bad,
Starting point is 00:14:39 it's all the Titans fall, everything, blah, whatever. But the point is, I really do believe that the Titans would have wins right now if they had just league average quarterback play. So that's why I am fully on board for trading for a good veteran quarterback. And Justin Herbert is number one on the top of that list. And I know that some of you will do the predictable thing.
Starting point is 00:15:03 Oh, he's never gotten it done. He's Mr. What If, he's Campman. He's if, you know, this if guy, blah, blah, all these things that people say. And I get it. He's never gotten it done. But Ryan Tanahill never got it done with Miami either. And I would sure take the Ryan Tana Hill window that we had right now. I know that Tana Hill didn't win a Super Bowl for this team.
Starting point is 00:15:25 But the run in 2019 being good in 2020, number one seed in 2021. Boy, I would sure take that kind of run right now. And not only that, but. I think Herbert has showed way better football in his career than Tana Hill had ever showed to that point. Herbert is a way better player than Ryan Tana Hill was with the Dolphins and has had way more success as a player than Tana Hill did in his time in Miami. And he will be more expensive, make no doubt about it.
Starting point is 00:15:55 I think it would cost multiple first round picks for the Titans. But if the Titans get the fourth or fifth pick in the draft this year, I would trade two first round picks for Justin Herbert. if the Titans get the number one pick in the draft I would probably only do do a one pick I would trade the first pick in the draft for Justin Herbert
Starting point is 00:16:16 or I would use it in a trade down with like the Jets for example who have two picks or the Browns who have two picks and then use one of you know the two picks that I acquired to trade for Justin Herbert
Starting point is 00:16:32 I would do something like that that would be possible. Combination moves. But if not Justin Herbert, Jalen Hertz could potentially be on the market. There are whispers about Lamar. You know, I don't buy that at all. And why would Lamar want to do that?
Starting point is 00:16:49 But I'm just saying, at this point, you cannot tell me with certainty that anything is a bad idea. We've tried everything. So I'm in. Like, I would trade for Justin Herbert. I think he's really good. I think the Titans would instantly be better
Starting point is 00:17:05 with league average quarterback play. I'm willing to pay for it. He's young enough that we can have him for a long time. I am so totally in on trading for Justin Herbert. I don't care. I'm in on it. Hurtz, I would be okay, but it would have to be a little cheaper.
Starting point is 00:17:19 I know that's crazy because Justin Hertz has won a Super Bowl MVP, but Jalen Hertz has his deficiencies on offense that make it harder. It's going to be hard to build a sake Juan Barclay, Eagles level, offensive line, all of that. Like, it's going to be difficult. And Hertz is more relying on his mobility, in my opinion,
Starting point is 00:17:41 which as he gets older may fade some. He had issues with A.J. Brown in the locker room. I'm a little worried about that. He's got Russell Wilson vibes, in my opinion, like I'm bigger and better than everybody else. Not saying that's true, but that's the vibe. So I would rather have Justin Herbert, personally, if I'm going to go all in for a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:17:58 That's what I would do. although if Lamar was available, that trumps everything, right? You take Lamar Jackson, but that's not going to happen. Anyways, if they don't want to go big with a quarterback trade, they could just draft another quarterback.
Starting point is 00:18:17 If Cam plays this bad, all year long, they could just draft another quarterback, and that would be a big time splash. And there are so many different ways that they can do it. and there are so many quarterbacks right now that people think could be first-round talent.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Mestemaker, Mensa, Chambliss, Carr, Manning, Moore, Simmons. Like, there are so many quarterbacks right now that people think could be first-round picks. That's seven or eight right there. Now, inevitably, some of them will drop off. Are they worth first-rounders? Quarterbacks always get pushed up. But, hey, like I said, what if the Titans get the first-
Starting point is 00:18:57 overall pick. They trade back with the Jets for their three first round picks or two first round picks and two seconds or whatever, you know what I mean? And then the Titans move back up to get a Jeremiah Smith or a Colin Simmons. And then they have a mid-first round pick still remaining and they use it on Mensa or Manning or, you know what I mean, or Dante Moore. like that would be a path forward that the Titans could have their cake and eat it too, get one of the really good position players and get their quarterback of the future.
Starting point is 00:19:33 That would be a massive swing if they get the number one overall pick and they can do something like that. So there are a lot of possibility still on the table if the Titans want to outright replace Cambor. Now, with that being said, the most likely path forward, in my opinion, is veteran competition. And at the end of the day, my ultimate, hope is, Cam Ward just plays better. And the Titans don't have to worry about quarterback after the season.
Starting point is 00:20:00 But again, the odds of that happening right now at this point with what we've seen, the stats, you know, it just, the odds are not high. So veteran competition, I think, is the number one option. And Mack Jones is number one on my list. But second on my list is a reunion with a former Tennessee Titan. Starting point is 00:22:46 of the Locked on Titans podcast. Again, we talked about why I don't think there are changes coming anytime soon for the Tennessee Titans. And if they do make a big change after the year, it's probably going to be a quarterback. The Titans could go with a replacement of Cam Ward with a big veteran trade, like for Justin Herbert.
Starting point is 00:23:03 They can take a rookie in the draft like an Archmanning. But the most likely path forward is veteran competition for Cam Ward. and I think there are clear options available, and there's definitely a tier break in the options for me. Number one is Mack Jones. Mac Jones has been in the San Francisco 49ers, quarterback rehabilitation program for a couple of years,
Starting point is 00:23:28 former first-round guy, and quite frankly, he is the complete opposite of Cam Ward. Cam Ward has great physical talent, can be Superman, and make highlight plays, but can't do the mundane things very well. Mac Jones, on the other hand, boring quarterback, operate the offense, do the right things,
Starting point is 00:23:51 but isn't an elite athlete by any means. That might be exactly what the Tennessee Titans need to show if Cam Ward is going to respond to the competition and win, Mac Jones is a great guy that he can learn from skill set-wise. And if Cam Ward doesn't bounce back, well, Mac Jones might be a breath of fresh air for the Titans because it's a total opposite skill. set, like we saw going from Brian Callahan to Robert Salah coach.
Starting point is 00:24:14 I think my second best option after Matt Jones, though, is Marcus Mariota. Why not? Why not for the vibes? If the team's going to suck, and if Cam Ward, who we bet, we bet it all on, if Cam Ward's going to go bust, at least we can have Marcus in here. He's been a competitive backup for Washington. He's been a competitive backup in multiple places. Marcus is, as good of a bridge quarterback, backup veteran competition guys
Starting point is 00:24:46 as they got in the NFL right now. He's right there with the best one, the Garner Mitchos and Jacoby Presets and, you know, Kirk Cousins and stuff like that, who we will get to. But the vibes for having Marcus and Brian Dable could use the quarterback run game that he likes so much, which could open up the playbook
Starting point is 00:25:03 a little bit more, you know? I'm for it. I'm for it. Let's build our castle with, you know, a king that we remember from the olden days who isn't a king anymore. You know, like, that's take Jeremiah Smith in the draft and let Marcus come in and have competition with Cam.
Starting point is 00:25:21 Like, that sounds awesome. But why not? You know what I mean? If they don't go with Matt Jones or Marcus, if Kyler Murray doesn't resign with the Vikings, again, the quarterback run game with Brian Dable, Kyler Murray at least has some, potential to be an answer for a couple of years
Starting point is 00:25:42 to be the new Ryan Tana Hill, you know what I mean? There's at least something in there. Maybe that could work. Again, I don't think so. So that's why I'd rather go with Mack Jones, who is less of a commitment, less of investment, lower expectations, or Marcus, which is pure nostalgia and vibes.
Starting point is 00:25:57 But, hey, you know, if they ended up with Kyler Murray, all right, him and Mark, or Cam, going one-on-one. All right, I'm okay with that. Drew Locke, I honestly, that's like my least favorite out of these these four options, I guess, you know. I just, I think that Mac Jones is a better player than Drew Locke. But whatever.
Starting point is 00:26:19 Gino Smith, Kurt Cousins, Jacoby Brissette, and Deshawn Watson. Those are the other options. Those are the other old vets outside of Marcus. Gino, I'm cool with. Gino could have a good impact on Cam Ward. Um, you probably want to start coming and compete. Kirk Cousins, I'm not as high on, I guess.
Starting point is 00:26:43 I mean, he's doing all right now, but just a boring quarterback. And I don't think that Brian Dables is good of a play caller as Clint Kubi at. So I don't think the Titans can replicate the success the Raiders are having right now on offense, not quite to that level. Deshawn Watson, no. I do not want to root for Deshawn Watson. I have no interest in that whatsoever. I do not care.
Starting point is 00:27:09 Not room for Deshawn Watson. Not going to do it. Although I do think that is a very realistic option, if I'm honest with you. Jacoby Brissette, that would be another one I'd be all right with. Jacoby Brissette, Kurt Cousins, Gino Smith, Drew Locke, Kyler Murray, my two favorites, Mac and Marcus. Those would be the best options, in my opinion.
Starting point is 00:27:29 And you bring in competition with Cam, you let those veterans know, hey, You could start. Maybe they want to go with a younger guy of competition. Maybe you go grab a J.J. McCarthy. Maybe you, with Levis. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:27:47 Like, I guess something like that. But I just think the two paths that are most likely, again, are a replacement. And I think rookie is more likely there than a big time trade. But I think the most likely path is a veteran competition. And again, those are my favorite options. I know they probably don't sound great to some of you. This is a depressing conversation to have.
Starting point is 00:28:08 But regardless, who are your favorite options? Would you trade for Herbert? Would you trade for Hertz? Would you try to trade down and get a rookie in the mid first round or early second round? Would you take a rookie at the top of the draft? Would you go get veteran competition? Who do you like?
Starting point is 00:28:25 So many questions, so many answers that we're going to be debating for the next few months. But either way, with that being said, that's going to do it for, me today, folks. As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
