Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Cam Ward WORST NFL STARTING QB Statistically & Fernando Carmona Replacement Options

Episode Date: September 28, 2026

The Tennessee Titans have yet to win a game and the play of Cam Ward at quarterback is under the microscope. Sticking with Ward is the best move, but the numbers paint an ugly picture and it is statis...tically unlikely Ward overcomes his first 20 games to become the franchise leader. Ward isn't the only problem though as Robert Saleh is showing discouraging signs whether in his game management or in his press conference comments. Saleh being an issue is almost more problematic than Ward. Finally, the Titans are now dealing with an injury concern as starting guard Fernando Carmona will be out a few weeks according to reports. With Jackson Slater also dealing with an injury, this leaves the Titans in a tough spot at guard with little answers.  LOCKED ON TITANS EVERYDAY CLUB: https://lockedontitans.supercast.com/ Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/product/tic-tac-titans-polo/255?cp=true&sa=true&sbp=false&q=false Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@LockedOnTitans Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!HomeChefFor a limited time, Home Chef is offering my listeners FIFTY PERCENT OFF and free shipping for your first box PLUS free dessert for life! Starting point is 00:00:00 I still believe in Cam Ward and think the Tennessee Titans should stick with him. But there are people calling Cam the worst starting quarterback in the NFL. And the numbers are hard to deny. That more on today's edition of Locked on Titans. You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast network, your team every day. Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast. I am your host, Tyler Roland Titans fans.

Starting point is 00:00:55 with both the top two options, now injured. I'll give you guys an update there. We got to talk about the scary, stinky, start for Robert Sala and why I'm worried about his fake two and one comments, but we got to start with Cam Ward because as yesterday's performance kind of marinerates, it kind of sinks in just how poor Cam Ward is playing right now. And I've looked at the data, I've gone over the film from Sunday's game, and there's really
Starting point is 00:01:24 just no escape right now from the reality of how bad Cam Ward is playing. and it's led to a conversation that has kind of been out there with fan bases outside the Titans, but now the Titans fan base I'm seeing engaging in the conversation quite a bit. Is Cam Ward the worst starting quarterback in the entire NFL? And I've got to tell you, I believe in Cam Ward. I think that he's a way better player than he's played the first three weeks of this season. I have been as critical of Cam Ward as anyone out there in the Titans ecosystem. and if you look at my film breakdown that I did on the Ticktack Titans channel that came out on Monday afternoon,
Starting point is 00:02:04 you'll see I'm very critical of Cam Ward. He is playing terrible football right now, but I don't think he's the worst starting quarterback in the NFL, and I think he's capable of much better. But some of the numbers, man, some of these stats that you see, it certainly does make it difficult to argue against. I mean, some... of the stats like just this year, for example,
Starting point is 00:02:32 Cam Ward ranks 32nd out of 36 quarterbacks with 30 or more pass attempts and completion percentage on throws 10 yards down the field, 10 air yards. He's currently the only starting quarterback who hasn't completed a 20-plus air yard throw this season, according to J.J. Zacharyson on Twitter. the only starting quarterback that hasn't completed a pass, 20 plus air yards down the field. It's all short stuff.
Starting point is 00:03:07 And that makes it even worse to me. Because right now, Cam is not playing good football and he's not doing the stuff that he needed to improve on well. But the stuff that he did do last year, well, he's not even given us that. He's not even given us the highlight plays. And there's more. It's not just this year. think about these numbers since Cam Ward has begun playing in the NFL. According to Jake Ann Ball on Twitter,
Starting point is 00:03:38 36 NFL quarterbacks have played 700 plus snaps since 2023. So since 2023, 700 plus snaps. There's 36 quarterbacks that have done them. Cam Ward, EPA per play, expected points added per play. negative.1.16. That is 36 out of 36. Adjusted EPA per play, which takes into account situation, down and distance, things like that. Negative. 0.093. 36 out of 36. Success rate. Just how successful the plays are with him at quarterback. success rate, you guessed it, 36th out of 36.
Starting point is 00:04:32 Completion, percentage, over expectation. This takes into account the blocking, how open people are, the situation. It takes into account all of the excuses. Negative 2.5, you guessed it, 36th. So, you know, I have seen Cam Ward make incredible plays. And I think he's still capable of making those incredible plays. And in the game on Sunday, we did start to see some improvements late in the game in the quick game, in the short passing game.
Starting point is 00:05:15 But quite frankly, the Giants decreased their aggressiveness in the second half because they were up 12 to nothing for a lot of those drives. So it's like, how likely is it? Be honest with yourself. How likely is it that Cam Ward is going to overcome these advanced numbers? How likely is it that Cam Ward is going to overcome that he's one of, you know, what, two or three quarterbacks in recent history that have only won three of their first 20 starts? You look at Bryce Young.
Starting point is 00:05:56 Bryce Young is, I think Troy Aikman was a name that I saw on the list. There was like six quarterbacks who were number one picks, who won three of their first 20 starts or, you know, first round, early first round, top, whatever qualifier they had. But again, there's just so many data points out there right now that say Cam Ward is one of the worst, early first round, number one pick, quarterbacks of all time in the first 20 starts of his career. And, you know, there are examples of guys. overcome. People always want to talk about Josh Allen as a guy that people always bring up.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Now, Bryce Young is what are the odds that Cam Ward is going to be one of those guys? Because at this point, either Cam Ward, which is the more likely outcome, either Cam Ward is a bust, which is statistically speaking, statistically speaking, the most likely outcome because most guys who play as poorly as Cam Ward, yeah, there's a lot of, list of this many guys who ended up, blah, blah, but most of the guys who play this poorly are just bad and never get good again. Statistically speaking, that's the most likely outcome. But if Cam Ward were to overcome, if Cam Ward were to turn it around, Cam Ward is going to be one of those guys who, when quarterbacks are really bad at the beginning of their career in the
Starting point is 00:07:25 future, they're going to be like, well, hey, maybe he can be like Cam Ward. maybe he can be like Cam Ward and he can turn it around. So either Cam is going to be a bust or he's going to be one of the guys who teams with quarterbacks who aren't playing well in the future look to and say, hey, maybe our quarterback could still work out because Cam Ward worked out. And quite frankly, that is not as likely of an outcome as Cam being 36th out of 36 qualified quarterbacks and all these other stats that aren't good. So right now, folks, we need a Hail Mary.
Starting point is 00:08:01 At this point, Cam Ward turning into the franchise quarterback who is good enough to win a Super Bowl for the Tennessee Titans, the odds of that happening are astronomically low right now, statistically speaking. Because again, statistically speaking, with as many data points as you want to bring to the table, I have so many in my notes, I can't even find all the ones I want to bring up. it's not looking good. And when I watched the tape of him against the Giants, again, there's so much bad
Starting point is 00:08:37 and I can't even find any good anymore. He threw a wide open curl route off play action to Carnell Tate. The one good throw that I think, I think he had one throw that I would say is a good, like, hey, that's a really good throw. Whoa, that's a good throw. is the little short post in the red zone
Starting point is 00:08:57 that he threw to Elyle-Ir-O-Manor right before the Wondale Robinson touchdown. I think that, or no, it was right before the interception, I think. But he had a nice little post against cover four. And other than that, like, I had four or five throws that I put in the good bucket that weren't just easy, quick game stuff.
Starting point is 00:09:19 If you add in the quick game throws, I had maybe 12 or so, good throws all day that just weren't bad. It's really bad right now, you know? And I want to stick with Cam Ward. You know, some people hear my analysis, and they're like, hey, you know, you hate Cam Ward, you think he's up, you're this or that.
Starting point is 00:09:41 I want to stick with Cam Ward. Cam Ward should stay the starter for the rest of the season. That is the island that I am on. That's where I'm at. I would rather lose and see Cam Ward play terrible than watch Mitch Trubisky maybe limp to another win or two this year. That's not what I want.
Starting point is 00:10:00 But man, whether it be the data, whether it be the film right now, there is not much to point to to say that Cam Ward is not the worst starting quarterback in the NFL right now. It's sad. It sucks. That's the reality is it sucks to admit that. It is terrible. When I turn on the film and I'm just like,
Starting point is 00:10:22 where the good, like, where's the good plays where I'm like, wow, this is a number one? Like the good plays right now for Cam are plays, you know, backups in this league could make. It's the simple stuff or the only things he's getting right. And anything further than that, there's nothing. And that is a regression from last year, which is what is most sad and most confusing. But again, we talk so much about Cam, it's not just Cam right now. I would say that the Titan's second biggest problem is their head coach Robert Salah.
Starting point is 00:10:54 and there are people out there trying to remove blame from Robert Sala, and I just don't get it. And this fake should be two and one attitude. To me, that's for losers. Do want to let you know that today's episode is brought to you. By ORA, Cybersecurity, most people don't realize how much of their personal information is being bought and sold every day.

We talked about the argument about Cam Ward being the worst starting quarterback in the NFL. Again, right now, the data isn't looking good.
Starting point is 00:13:49 But Cam Ward isn't the only problem for the Titans. And I think the other big problem the Titans have is their head coach, Robert Salah, not so much as a defensive coordinator, but as a head coach and a game manager and his attitude as of late about the Titans out playing teams when they lose and this thought process that they're a couple of plays away from being two and one. Like to me, it just stinks of loser mentality. And I see people trying to, again, absolve Robert Sala of blame. Like it wasn't his fault, the Titans lost.
Starting point is 00:14:24 I've seen that sentiment from multiple people from, you know, at different levels in the ecosystem of the Titans sphere that we're in. And it's just perplexing to me because I feel like Robert Sala, has made some significant obvious mistakes. Again, not as a defensive coordinator, but as a game manager. And quite frankly, you could argue as a defensive coordinator, the Titans were incredibly conservative on defense against the Philadelphia Eagles against the New York Jets. It allowed those teams to have super long drives. And we talk about the time of possession argument and how time of possession has killed the Tennessee Titans. Well, that is partly the
Starting point is 00:15:02 offense's fault because they can't sustain drives and stay out on the field and move the But part of that in the first two games was the Titans defense was allowing third down conversions early in the game and allowing these super long drives before the offense had really done their damage and time of possession. The offense had only been on the field once or twice before the Jets had a 19 play drive. That's not necessarily all well. The offense couldn't move the ball. That's Robert Salas' defense being too conservative and allowing multiple third down conversions
Starting point is 00:15:34 and deciding to play too high safety coverages and play lax zone coverages and keep everything in front of them and not allow the explosive play. That is a philosophical decision that the Tennessee Titans head coach acting as the defensive coordinator made and it allowed these long drives that sap the energy out of the defense, ruin the rhythm of the offense as well. Robert Sala is also culpable for his defenses in the time of possession conversation. Robert Sala is the head coach of the team. As the special teams is falling apart and dying every single week,
Starting point is 00:16:09 Robert Sala hasn't done anything to prevent that. And quite frankly, that is the burden of leadership. If the Titans' special teams is terrible and the Titans' offense is terrible, couldn't you make the argument that if Robert Sala had more of a hand and was more of an actual head coach over the offense and the defense and not just let Brian Dable run everything himself, could that have helped the Titans be better on offense with a more hand, on head coach who's more capable on both sides of the ball.
Starting point is 00:16:37 Isn't that a potential critique on Robert Sala that he just wants to go away and be the defensive coordinator and his game management decisions and his time management decisions and his timeouts and his approach to offense and his ability to help the offense aren't all of those hindered because he's so gung-ho on calling plays on defense. Wouldn't that be a fair critique of the Tennessee Titans head coach? And then in result, no matter how much of the. percentage you want to give him, he cannot be blameless.
Starting point is 00:17:07 And then we look at some of the time management decisions that he's made, letting clock burn off in multiple games, not calling timeouts in certain spots. The Titans having 13 guys on the field multiple times in week one, resulting in penalties or timeouts needing to be called, and the Titans still can't get stops in those situations. We saw the Titans have to burn a second half timeout that as a team trying to come back from down double digits. Boy, they probably could have used an extra timeout to make them feel a little bit more comfortable. Open up the playbook at the end of the game, allow potentially some more run action to be involved on the final drive because you have an extra timeout. But because Robert
Starting point is 00:17:46 Sala couldn't manage the substitutions, even though he's hyper-focused on the defensive side of the ball already, the substitutions are still wrong. They had to burn a timeout, the same mistake that they made in week one. So it's like Robert Sala's at fault for all of that. The sequence, before halftime, where he decides to kick a 60-yard field goal and a monsoon and the Titans miss. And it ends up giving a free three points to the Giants with great field position and their three timeouts. You could have punted that ball. But he decided to go for a 60-yard field goal from Joey Sly. It's not good. The Giants get an extra three points. It hurts momentum. And at the end of the game, Cam Ward throws an interception to lose it. But if the Titans didn't give away a
Starting point is 00:18:30 three-three points before halftime to the next. New York Giants, then maybe the Titans don't have to be aggressive. They can run the ball three times, kick a field goal, and win 10 to 9. But no, Robert Salas somehow escapes blame because Cam Ward played so poorly. No, I'm not going to let that pass. You guys always want to say, oh, let's all blame Cam Ward. Nobody else? No. Tyler Rowland, the host of Locked on Titans gets on his show every day, and he blames
Starting point is 00:18:55 everybody. You know what I mean? I am not here to excuse Cam Ward. I am not here to do that. He deserves his blame. and I spent 10 minutes blaming Cam Ward. And I spent 30 minutes on Tick-Tac Titans breaking down the film Blaming Cam Ward.
Starting point is 00:19:09 But Robert Sala is not blameless. Robert Sala is the Titan's second biggest problem right now. So whether it be the field goal, the time management and the timeout usage, or this loser mentality that it started last week when he said that they outplayed the Philadelphia Eagles. All right, I was like, all right, I get what you're saying. You're trying to hype up your team.
Starting point is 00:19:30 guys, we're better, you know, we're better than the record says, we can do this, blah, blah, blah. But this week when he said we're a couple of plays away from two and one, and I see Tennessee Titans fans arguing that this team is better than the record says there are, this team is better than the 0 and 3. They're better than they look. This team is better than what the, they're a couple of plays from two and one.
Starting point is 00:19:51 Are you really going to fall for that again? That's the same stuff you guys were saying to me at the beginning of 2024. Hey, Will Levis is killing us right now. this team is better than what their record says. They lost close games. They're losing one-score games. 50-plus percent of NFL games are one-score games. Don't be fooled by one-score losses.
Starting point is 00:20:13 There was a record in the NFL this weekend on Sunday. The most one-score games on a Sunday in NFL history, there were 12. One-score games aren't the sign of a good or bad team. One-score games are life in the NFL. NFL. The Titans aren't better than they look because the Titans just scored seven points against the James Winston-led New York Giants. And I have people in my feed trying to convince other people. The Titans are better than they look. It's insane. They got blown out in week one against the Jets who are one and two now and lost to the Packers.
Starting point is 00:20:56 Everybody tried to go. The Jets are better than you think. Like I hate the just like stuff the negativity down your throat with a spoon like it's mashed potatoes and you won't eat at dinner. But I mean, I'm sorry. I can't get on here and lie to you. And some of these things people are preaching to try to make people feel better. It's like, what are we doing? You know, this team is not a couple of plays from two and one. And if you think that, how many plays away from 0 and 3 are they? Because I've seen a lot of plays that resulted in 0 and 3. And I think there are a lot more plays that made you 0 and 3 than there are a
Starting point is 00:21:31 that would have made you two and one. I think that's a loser's mentality. That's something losers tell themselves after they lose with just a couple of plays away. When are we going to quit celebrating a couple of plays away and start making the freaking plays and winning the games? Until somebody changes their mentality and quit saying we outplayed teams that we lost to
Starting point is 00:21:52 and we're a couple of plays away from two and one when we're actually 0 and 3 and look like crap, until that mentality changes, the wins will not come. And again, my overall point of this segment is that Robert Sala deserves a ton of blame. It's not just his decision-making as a head coach and a defensive coordinator.
Starting point is 00:22:14 It's this mentality that has me frustrated. And Jets fans are going to be in the comments, Robert Sala football. It wasn't any better with Brian Callahan, so don't act like you're inflicting some additional damage on us Jets fans. Yeah, right, we've been here already. Sadly, it's just a continuation of the concerns, conservative, confusing, frustrating coaching that we've seen before.
Starting point is 00:22:36 And I'm not, again, I'm not giving up on Robert Sala. The Titans are stuck with Sala for two seasons. This season and next season at minimum. Get on the train. Like, that's the truth. Sal ain't going anywhere anytime soon. But am I concerned and frustrated with what I've seen so far from a coaching standpoint? Yes.
Starting point is 00:22:57 And I don't understand how anybody can act like they aren't. But with that being said, we go from two things that have been the biggest concerns to probably the new other biggest concern. Fernando Carmona out multiple weeks and Jackson Slater probably out longer. What are they going to do? I'm Jake. Let's go from the lockdown Bengals podcast here to tell you today about Fabletics because they're launching a new apparel collection with the NFL's number one receiver. You know that's Una. Starting point is 00:24:44 We talked about the stats showing Cam Ward is the worst starting quarterback in the NFL. I don't believe it. I want them to stick with him through thick and thin throughout this season. But boy, the argument is getting harder to make. We talked about why I'm equally as scared about Robert Sala and what he's done through three weeks. But now I'm also terrified about the Tennessee Titans right guard position. And the one thing, the one thing that has been consistently really good throughout the first three weeks of the season has been the Tennessee Titans offensive line.
Starting point is 00:25:16 They were even better against the New York Giants. J.C. Latham absolutely locked down his side. But now, even that joy that we have in our lives from a week-to-week basis is being threatened. Fernando Carmona, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, is going to miss, quote, a few weeks with an ankle injury. He was already dealing with a shoulder injury coming into the game, leaves the game with the ankle injury a few weeks. Will he go on IR?
Starting point is 00:25:45 That would be four weeks. minimum. The Tennessee Titans by week is week nine. So if he misses four weeks, it'd be Ravens, Texans, Colts, Browns, and then he'd be back for Bengals, which they may just keep him out until the buy at that point and bring him back week 10. I hope that's not the case. If Fernando Carmona avoids injured reserve, if he doesn't go on IR, then that probably means that the Titans
Starting point is 00:26:12 think he's going to be back sooner than those four weeks, which would mean three weeks or something like that. And if he were to miss Ravens, Texans, Colts, which is terribly unfortunate for the Titans because winning against the Colts and the Texans could conceivably get them some sort of hope. I know it's very unbelievable right now that they would even be able to achieve that,
Starting point is 00:26:33 which has been my point about must-win games all along. But nonetheless, if he were back for the Browns, that would at least be a game that the Tennessee Titans could conceivably win. And if he doesn't go on IR, maybe he shocks us, he comes back for the Colts game in weeks. and comes back even earlier. Either way, he's going to be out for a few weeks. How do they replace him? Well, the number one option is Jackson Slater, and Slater came out there and actually had a pretty decent game.
Starting point is 00:26:56 But then we hear from Robert Sala on Monday morning that Jackson Slater has a serious foot issue and he's probably going to be out for a significant amount of time. So as soon as Fernando Carmona goes out, Jackson Slater goes out right behind him. What the heck are the Tennessee Titans going to do? Well, on the roster, right now, they have Antonio Maffy, right, as a guard option. I don't know much about Mopi. He hasn't had many opportunities. He was brought on after the preseason, so he didn't really play in our view or anything
Starting point is 00:27:30 like that. He could be an option, but I've got to be honest with you. I have seen Garrett Dellinger, who is on the Tennessee Titans practice squad right now. I have seen him play. He was good in run blocking in the preseason. I would bring up Garrett Dellinger. I would give him the start at right guard. If you don't want to do that, you want to get a little more creative.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Maybe James Hudson, who was brought on as the Titans swing tackle after cutdowns and everything like that. He's had experience with Carmen Bracillo. Maybe you want to put James Hudson in at right guard and just go with your best five talents that you have. Brandon Crenshaw Dixon has played offensive tackle. But again, maybe like with James Hudson, you want to slide him inside and let him play at guard.
Starting point is 00:28:10 I would be understanding of that trying to get just your most talented guy because quite frankly, I think Hudson and Brendan Crenshaw Dixon are more talented football players than Maffy or Garrett Dellinger. Pat Coogan could play center and you could move Austin Shlopman to right guard. Maybe that's a possibility as well, although I think Shlopman is just too small and too weak to actually survive at guard in the Tennessee Titan system. He is a center. That is where I would claim.
Starting point is 00:28:37 So I don't know that that's a good thing. And now you're way worse at center and you're worse at right guard. So I don't think that that's the move. The only other option, could the Tennessee Titans look to take somebody off someone else's practice squad? Could they look to sign a free agent? Kevin Zitler, still out there.
Starting point is 00:28:55 Zitler, do you want to come to this O'N3 football team and play some right guard for us? I would be open to it, you know what I mean? But it's only going to be a couple of weeks for Cormona, hopefully. So would that even make sense for Zaitler? Because what happens after Cormona is back? They're going to want to put him back in the lineup. So I don't see that as an option.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Taking somebody off someone else's practice squad who they may be interested in could be an option. But again, I think Garrett Dellinger or one of the tackles, Hudson or Brennan, Crenshaw Dixon, that would be my solution to the Tennessee Titans right guard spot. But either way, it sucks that, you know, Cam Ward was already struggling with the offensive line playing awesome. Now we're going to have a practice squad level right guard in there. And J.C. Latham was playing good. now he's going to have to help. And Slotman being the, you know,
Starting point is 00:29:44 Shloatman, I don't want to say he's the worst starter. That probably would have been Carmona, I guess, but Schlotman struggles and run blocking. He's a smaller guy. He's not super powerful. He's a good athlete for the size of very smart and all that, just workman-like type guy. He could survive when the rest of the offensive line was good and strong.
Starting point is 00:30:04 Carmona and Latham, good and strong, Skoronsky and Moore, good at times. We know Skoranski's really good, but like now if you have a big problem at right guard and then you have Schlotman next to it, that magnifies him as a problem. Very dangerous game to play.
Starting point is 00:30:23 So, you know, if Cam Ward was already playing bad, now the offensive line is going to be worse. Oh, man, it is a struggle. But I will tell you this, guys. Positive content coming your way. positive content coming your way. Cornell Tate looked awesome against the Giants.
Starting point is 00:30:44 I'm going to do a film breakdown on that and talk about it on the podcast tomorrow. J.C. Latham looks absolutely awesome. He's been the Titans best offensive linemen by far. Can't wait to break that down on film on Tick-Tac Titans and talk about it on here on tomorrow. The defensive side of the ball is getting better. Jeff Simmons is absolutely nuts. There are positive things to talk about with this team. And I know that some of you want to be super negative all the time
Starting point is 00:31:08 and the negative storylines are the big storylines. Guilty is charge. But there's positive content coming your way. Tomorrow we're getting positive. All right.
