Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Cam Ward's SUPERSTAR BREAKOUT BOOSTED by Carnell Tate, Brian Daboll & Diet Change
Episode Date: May 24, 2026The Tennessee Titans had their first open OTA last week and it got the fan base stirring after a solid performance from Cam Ward and an excellent debut from Carnell Tate. Ward's growth is absolutely c...ritical and while the on-field work is key, Ward is making enhancements to his fitness and diet as well. Those changes can be equally beneficial as he tries to become a superstar and it sounds like Ward took the new ideas seriously. Carnell Tate can help him get there with assistance from Brian Daboll as well. Tate can win in isolated situations with consistency and Daboll can create those situations. Ward spoke after practice last week and explained it himself. Finally, there was a list of Titans that did not participate and while some are a bit worried, there is a valid reason to not be concerned about any absences at this time. It's only been one week of Tennessee Titans OTAs,
but it's clear that Cam Ward has everything he needs for a superstar breakout.
And I'll tell you why on today's edition of Locked on Titans.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast,
part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast.
I am your host, Tyler Rollin Titans fans.
Today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast
is brought to you by Fandle.
Right now, new customers can bet just $150 and get $150

to get started on today's show.
We are going to talk about the people who were absent
from Titans practice on Thursday
and why it's really not a big deal.
Also, we're going to talk about why Cam Ward is set up
for a superstar breakout in year two
that includes Carnell Tate
and him potentially being a superstar number one,
wide receiver and what he can do within this offense, but also it's about the teaching and
coaching that Cam Ward's going to get and his dietary changes, which is where we're going to start.
Cam Ward said that he lost 10 pounds at his press conference after practice on Thursday, and he
talked about the different changes that he's made to do that. And at the end of the day, I have
talked quite a bit about how important it was for Cam Ward to go to the next level from a fitness
standpoint from a commitment to his body standpoint.
I talked about that back in December.
I had a couple of tweets about it.
We talked about it after Robert Sala was hired
because Sala mentioned on and off the field going back to square one
from a professionalism standpoint for Cam Ward.
Robert Sala mentioned it again later in the all season
and every single time that it's been mentioned.
I have brought up, hey, back in December,
I was like, I think Cam Ward can get to the next level.
And quite honestly, even though people got
mad about that because anytime there's any kind of criticism on Cam Ward, people in the Titans fan base are going to be sensitive to that. But at the end of the day, I don't think it's a hot take to say that a rookie can improve in his conditioning, his fitness, his dietary habits, his all field manner.
Like those are the things that naturally improve for rookies as they grow into adults. We just saw it with Jeffrey Simmons where he dropped 20 pounds, got more serious about his diet, his conditioning, his fitness, off the field, all that different stuff. And then he had a career year.
with 11 sacks and became the best interior
defensive lineman in the NFL that we all
knew he could be. Like he fulfilled his promise
and his potential finally by
taking it to that next level with his commitment
off the field. So it's not a hot take or a major
criticism of Cam Ward to say, hey, I think he can
you know, change his body for the better
and take it to the next level and get better
with his off field commitment. And that's only natural.
You come in as a rookie off of the combine, off of the draft,
straight into rookie minicamp,
straight into OTA, straight into training
camp and it's kind of a whirlwind for you.
So again, just a natural progression for the players who actually give a darn about their
career and about taking care of their bodies and doing the right things and having the right
diet and all that.
Like that's just naturally going to progress.
So not a shocker to me that Cam Ward also had that mentality.
I think there are people out there with a mentality of complacency.
And, you know, when you're like, hey, I think Cam Ward needs to get in better shape and be,
you know, more serious about his fitness and his diet, things like that.
people who maybe don't have that kind of commitment
and kind of disciplined and things like that.
Oh, you don't need to do that.
Cam Ward doesn't need to do any of.
Well, Cam Ward, luckily for us, does have that dog in him,
does have that drive, does that have that commitment.
And again, he talked about that after practice on Thursday
saying that he lost 10 pounds.
He said, quote, I'm trying to get a little bit leaner
and then just trying to stay durable for a long season.
He said it's really just watching my calorie limit,
watching the amount of protein, the amount of carbs,
I need to put in and what's best for my body and how I feel.
I just think the weight loss will help me with durability,
being faster, getting up in the pocket,
and then trying to play at my speed and not know what else's speed.
And I saw some people say, like,
how is losing 10 pounds better for durability?
And listen, I would get it if you're a lineback
or a running back, an offensive line,
and you want more bulk and more armor on you
to keep you more durable from the pounding that you're taking
than sure.
But I think for a quarterback, being more flexible,
you're in those weird circumstances, people pulling out you, people diving at your legs,
being quicker, lighter on your feet, more nimble, more flexible, having more mobility.
I actually think those are more important things to keep a quarterback healthy.
So I saw a lot of that pushback of why would lose a 10 pounds help you be durable.
And I think just like, yeah, being lighter in your body, being more nimble, more mobile, more
flexible, more agile, that actually is going to keep a quarterback healthier rather than being
bulkier and stronger and more muscle bound
like you would want to be maybe for a lineback or
running back offensive line. People who
were right there hammerhead shark against
each other nonstop. So I saw that out there
and I thought that was absolutely
ridiculous. But again,
these are the things that I have been
focused on and it's not just
him staying durable off
on the field and being away.
It's his stamina.
carrying less weight. Being in better
shape, better cardio. He said he's been doing
cardio to go along with it. He's just trying to
to lose some weight and I honestly could tell.
As a man with a chubby face, all of my weight goes straight to my face.
It always had.
I had chubby cheeks as a kid.
I can be in pretty good, I'm in pretty good shape right now, honestly, but my cheeks,
still, it's just the way it is.
But when I do lose weight, the first thing that happens is my face slims down.
And I don't think that I'm unique in that.
I think you can see people and see when they've lost some weight.
We saw it with Jeff.
We saw it with Trailing when he lost some weight one all season.
A while ago, you see it in people's faces.
And you can look at Cam Ward's face from last year to this year and be like,
oh, yeah, he just looks so much more cut in the cheeks and the chin and everything like that.
So you can see it.
And last year, I can tell, hey, he's still got a little bit of that baby fat on him.
He can get a little bit, he doesn't need to have a six-pack like Captain America or anything like that.
But you can just tell.
And it makes sense because he's a rookie.
He's not going to be at the full level maturation of his intelligence on his
all field program.
How could you expect that from him?
But the fact that he's dedicated to it, he's starting it.
I think Robert Sala had a lot to do with it.
And we've heard Robert Sala talk about it multiple times.
I think Robert Sala got on the phone with Cam and said,
hey, we need to get in better shape.
That's what, and when you hear about the seed oil thing,
I think a Monty Hooker looked real thin too,
really thin in the face, which if you think the seed oils are supposed to,
you remove seed oils, it helps with inflammation and, you know,
I'm not a doctor, as I tell you guys all the time,
but it does make logical sense altogether.
So I loved seeing that from Cam
because that's something that I personally had identified
as something that could take him to that next level.
That can take him to that next step.
More dedication to your fitness,
all-field regimen, your diet.
And he's talking about his macros,
his protein, his carbs, his intake, his calories.
Like, that's regiment, discipline,
understanding so many people in life
don't pay any attention to any of that stuff at all.
How much protein they're intaking,
their calories, all that different stuff.
So for Cam, who is in shape of professional athlete,
doesn't necessarily need to live a lifestyle like that
to ensure that he's in good enough shape to perform.
But if you do it,
winning on those margins.
Every little bit counts.
Every little thing matters.
So his stamina on the field,
his quickness on the field,
being able to recover faster,
being in a better preventative state
to not get injured because you're more mobile,
more flexible, lighter on your body.
He even talked about how he feels going to practice.
He said that in one of those quotes,
how I feel before I practice.
Which tells me that maybe he wasn't eating the right things
before practice last year.
And he wanted to make sure that he felt good
going into practice every day
and was eating the right things
and fueling his body correctly.
a different level of self-awareness that is required to take.
It's not just on the field, throwing the football,
reading the defenses, knowing the playbook.
Like it's your wellness as a human being in total
that can take you to that next level once you get into your prime.
And Cam is already beginning that journey,
which proves to us that he does care.
And we're sitting here talking about all of this right now,
Cam's dedication, Cam changing this.
We're going to talk about Cam's connection with Cardinal Tate,
him and Brian Dable together, learning the playbook.
And I take you back to a video that Cam Ward once made with Shador Sanders.
I play football.
I play football.
Why other young quarterbacks are out there kicking hornets nests
and causing controversies in the locker room or, you know,
doing different things.
What does Cam Ward do?
I play football.
Cam Ward plays football.
He focuses on all the things that matter.
Rather than champagne and campaigning out in the media,
doing different things, this and that,
being all in the videos.
You know, like that, you know,
Cam's a football player.
And I think this conversation about his diet,
his fitness, his commitment level off the field.
It's step one.
Cam Ward, making Cam Ward better
a step one towards that superstar breakout.
But again, the on-field stuff matters a lot.
Now that he has Cornell Tate,
the sky is the limit.

Friends, let's continue today's edition of the Lockdown Titans
Podcast. Again, Cam Ward can have a superstar breakout
and a big part of it is his dedication off the field
like we just talked about, his fitness level,
but obviously on the field matters as well.
And with the connection that he seems to have to Carnell Tate,
who Carnell Tate can be in this offense,
the coaching he's getting in this offense from Brian Dable,
those are the other parts of this.
take Cam to that next level. Now, before we dive into those parts, which are obviously standing
out as well, do want to thank you for making Locked-on Titans, your first listen each and every day.

Locked on Titans.
But Cornell Tate, the connection with Cam Ward, Cam to Cornell,
already heating up.
We got official numbers.
Jim Wyatt said Carnell Tate had six catches,
three touchdowns against one of them was called back,
but would have been a third touchdown for Carnell Tate.
I mean, Jim is dunking on other media people about Carnell Tate already.
Everybody ooh and on about Carnell Tate.
all over the place, nonstop, and listen.
We could talk about Cam Ward off the field.
We'll talk about the coaching from Brian Dable.
But there is nothing more definitively helpful
for a young quarterback to go to the next level
than a number one wide receiver.
When Tyree Kill took that step forward,
which Patrick Mahomes obviously helped with.
Jamar Chase for Joe Burrow,
Stefan Diggs for Josh Allen.
Look, what Bryce Young did last year with Teteroa McMillan, right?
I mean, that's on the lower end of the spectrum, but it's up there.
Jackson Dart looked pretty good with Malik neighbors when he was out there, right?
You know, let's call it what it is.
C.J. Stroud has been a disaster without Tank Dell.
I'm sure that there are more examples out there.
I think there's like one big one than I'm forgetting of a recent quarterback high pick.
that got a number one wide receiver.
But regardless, you see the past,
oh, Jalen Hertz, A.J. Brown.
Look what happened there.
So it's like, you get your young quarterback
a big-time number one elite receiver
and they go to the next level.
Because what that does is,
that gives you someone who can be your security blanket.
When the defense is covered everybody,
I could still throw it to this guy and he's going to make a play.
When the zone coverage closes every window,
I know that he's going to get open and find a window for me.
And we already saw that sort of,
when I have nothing, I have Carnell.
When I have nothing, I have Carnell.
We already saw that at OTAs on Thursday
when the second touchdown that Cornell Tate got, that actually counted,
was in the red zone during two minutes,
and the Titans posted the video of it,
and Cam Ward is looking to the right,
nothing there, comes back to the left,
and hits Cornell Tate over the middle for a touchdown in the back of the end zone.
To tap, hands up high, catch, toe tap in touchdown.
He doesn't drop the ball. He's going to be there.
I can look right, no one there, go back,
throw it to Carnell. If I get it close, he'll get it.
So, that philosophy of why a number one wide receiver matters so much
already on display for Cam Ward from day one with Carnell tape.
From the very first day, we were able to see anything.
There it is. Already proof of concept.
And in this offense, like I continue to say,
isolated situations.
I've literally been talking about this for weeks
and now you're starting to hear Cam Ward talk about.
Cam Ward talked about
Cornell Tate after practice on Thursday
and he said he's got great hands.
He wins in man coverage. He's a strider.
He's a guy who can create versus off versus press.
He really doesn't drop nothing.
So I've just got to continue to find ways to get him the ball early
or to get him the ball early, get him the ball, continue to work on timing.
And here's the part that I love the most.
In this system, which I've been telling you, side note, back to Cam,
he's going to have a lot of field to have a lot of freelance
within his routes, feel space to sit down.
For a rookie coming in, I think this is one of the best offenses he could be in.
just because he's going to get coached,
but he's not going to be over-coached.
He's going to still be able to play football how he sees it.
He listens to the quarterback.
He's going to be a great target for me.
This point right here,
for a rookie coming in,
it's one of the best or back.
He says he's going to have a lot of field
to have a lot of freelance with his routes
feels space to sit down.
Carnell Tate's going to have the opportunity.
To be on the isolated side
where he's in man coverage
and I've talked about how this happens.
Brian Dable is excellent at creating matchups.
He will use trips.
He will use alignment
to change the defense based on their rules.
So imagine if they're playing a defense that runs cover four zone.
If he runs trips to one side,
three wide receivers to one side
with Carnell Tate on the backside by himself,
he knows that based on that defense's rules,
they're going to one-on-one the backside corner
and play man coverage against Carnell Tate.
So now you have Carnal Tate one-on-one,
run them on a vertical route down the field.
Carnal Tate one-on-one vertical route.
That's his specialty.
We're throwing that.
And he's winning, jumping over cornerbacks,
making play, scoring touchdowns, making big plays happen.
We want that.
So Brian Dable is going to be able to
create those isolated situations where, okay, we beat you deep.
Now I can sit down.
Now I can run a quick out route.
Now I can stutter you and slant inside.
And Cam Ward can just look over at Cornell Tate and tell him what he wants.
They can feel the coverage and the leverage of the cornerback together
and get that timing down and through years and years and years of work,
make it completely unstoppable, especially in the Red Zone.
So if Carnell Tate is going to be this, and again, it's one OTA, doesn't prove anything, doesn't, you know, don't get the Hall of Fame jacket ready for Carnell Tate quite yet.
But let's just close our eyes and imagine for a moment, if Cornell Tate can be this with how he fits in the offense, it can win in the situations that this offense creates for him.
this offense is literally designed to create those isolated matchups.
And if you have somebody who can perfectly win in those isolated matchups,
that's enough to be a number one wide receiver for Cam Ward.
And again, help take him to the next level.
And that is possible because it's Brian Daibald's offense.
And Daible knows what he's doing.
And Cam Ward talked about, you know,
Dable working on his mechanics.
Cam Ward's had just being slower in the pocket,
not getting to the top of my drop as fast,
which when he's dropping back into the pocket,
getting to the very top of his drop.
He says not getting there as fast
before a receiver even makes his decision.
So apparently Brian Dable told him he was getting
dropping back in the pocket too fast
and it was messing up the timing of the routes with the receiver
so nobody was open when he got to the top of his drop
because he's too fast.
I could see that.
That makes sense.
See, that's the type of stuff.
I'll admit to you. I don't see all of that. I'm not Brian Daible. I'm not a, you know,
professional offensive coordinator, quarterback guru in the NFL and college football for the last
15 years. So that's a great little nugget there that it's clear Cam Ward's working on that because
Brian Daibble is getting him to work on that. He says, just continue to feel the tackle set,
not put them in a bad situation, and just continue to lead the football team. And this is
another aspect that I talked about of Cam Ward not causing sacks, which I have
about eight or nine last year that were Cam Ward's fault.
Now, that's eight or nine at a 56, 55.
But nonetheless, still, you can clean that stuff up
and get yourself in less pressure and less problems.
He's got growing up to do and maturing to do an improvement to do.
Yes, he's a very good player already,
but these are all things that this is what we wanted to hear.
Brian Daible has a fiery, intense personality
that will demand better from Cam Ward.
And he even talked about,
Cam Ward even talked about the Brian Dable connection.
Quote, the biggest thing that I'm trying to do is get better
and see it from the play caller's standpoint
and why he's calling this play,
whether it's first or second down,
and I'm going to see what his mindset is,
and it's been going good so far.
And I thought this nugget was hugely important from Cam Ward.
He talked about last year's offense about things slow and down for him.
He said, no, quote, we're just running,
playing faster plays where I can control a lot of it.
I get to see angles of guys where they are going,
and I just anticipate the throw.
So he's literally saying Brian Dable's offense is just faster.
The plays are faster.
And what did I complain about all the time during,
the slow developing plays,
especially the slow developing run plays
with orbit motion and a fake inside handoff
to a spin pivot, outside handoff,
with two pullers outside.
and just so slow, quickness, speed,
Cam, making decisions with his mind,
cutting people up.
That's what the Titans needed to do,
and instead they were in this bulky, slow offense
under the Callahan's.
Didn't make any sense.
So it's Daible,
it's Carnotate,
it's Cam himself improving off the field,
but all of those factors together
create the superstar breakout
that I think we're getting from Cam Ward this year.
I think it happens.
So that's what I'm looking for.
Now, I want to finish today's show
with a little bit of a Roland's rant for you guys
because I've had some people be a little concerned
about the absences during Thursday's OTA
and I just don't, I don't think there's any reason for concern.

Fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
Again, we talked about Cam Ward Superstar Breakout,
how we made some dietary changes to help him get there.
We talked about Carnell Tate's emergence, Brian Dables, tutelage,
helping Cam Ward get there.
Now I want to pivot a little bit again to the people who missed OTAs on Thursday
and why I don't think that it's a very big deal for a multitude of reasons.
except for one player who I do have my eye on,
who missed on Thursday.
But before we get into that,
I do want to thank you again for making Locked-on Titans

But with that being said, again, there were some people who were absent
from Thursday's Titans practice
Mitch Trubisky, Calvin Ridley,
Elykeyeo Manor, Chim Dikey,
Jeffrey Simmons, John Franklin Myers, Cordell Flott, Dan Moore,
Femiola Dasia.
Now, I have seen different lists with different names
from multiple different beat reporters
and the Titans because it's a voluntary,
Keep that in mind. It is a voluntary portion of the offseason,
these organized team activities.
Mandatory mini-camp is the first mandatory...
Mandatory mini-camp.
It's the first mandatory item on the Titans' off-season schedule.
Now, training camp, mandatory, you know.
But these are voluntary off-season team activities.
But when you have a new coaching staff,
it's very important that people go.
at a pretty high clip because it's a whole new system, new culture.
You want your culture setters there.
You want people to be able to lean on each other.
You want people to be able to learn from each other.
You want your best players to set an example.
And, you know, it's important for people to be there.
But through videos that the Titans have put out of,
it was phase one of OTAs where they're not really doing 11 on 11,
as much 7 on 7 stuff.
but it's more individual work,
it's more walk-through install,
you know, conditioning, things like that,
lifting, all that different stuff that they're doing.
It's more of that kind of stuff.
But nonetheless,
we've seen Jeffrey Simmons there.
We've seen the heavy hitters there
who maybe weren't there.
Dan Moore has been there a ton in the videos,
you know, things like that.
So I'm not overly concerned
that like one of these guys
is holding out or not showing up
or this and that, even Jeff.
Jeff has been at some of these and he'll be back.
And if anybody has earned the right to do their own thing
and get themselves right, it's Jeffrey Simmons, right?
But more I just want Big Jeff around for leadership and things like that.
But again, I don't think because he wasn't there on Thursday,
that he hasn't been around when we know he has from other team media and things like that.
But like, I have, Jim, where are they at?
What are they doing?
Now, there are personal things.
Like guys could go on vacations during this time.
Guys could be working with their personal trainers.
They could be doing cleanups.
They could have family obligations, weddings,
and, you know, this is the kind of stuff that happens right around that,
which is why all this stuff is voluntary.
Because if it was mandatory, they would literally be screwed.
You know, there's so much to do during this time when you play in the NFL
and basically July to February, your books.
You've got to get a lot of stuff done.
So, again, not concerned for those reasons.
But I will say this.
Femi, according to multiple reports,
watched practice over like by the building or something.
You know, he had like a shirt off or something.
It was just like standing outside the trainer's room or the locker room or where.
I don't know.
I don't know.
He was standing by a building watching practice, not in practice.
And I'm like, why?
Other guys, maybe they had obligations.
That's why they weren't there.
They're on vacation.
All the things that I, weddings, this, that, all the things that I talked about before.
I think Jim D.K. was graduating this weekend.
I thought I saw something like that.
I could be wrong on that, but either way.
But Femmy was there.
So if he's there and he's not participating
when this is valuable time for Femi
and he needs to get every rep possible,
is he banged up?
Is he already hurt again?
After not being hurt in college, ever.
Is he banged up again?
The Titans have another
open OTAs.
on Friday,
Femmy better be out there.
Like, period.
So I'm going to be watching that.
But with all of these guys missing OTAs,
it gave more opportunities to some younger players.
And we're going to talk about some of those younger guys, things like that,
as we continue throughout the week.
Because again, the Titans don't have their next practice until Friday.
So I'll have a bonus episode on Friday after practice.
But that's a full week of shows for us.
to dive into some of these things that popped up from the last OTA
and other conversations that need to be had.
But with that being said, that is going to do it for me today, folks.
As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
