Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans CAN BEAT Houston Texans, but MUST ATTACK Davis Mills & Create Explosives Plays
Episode Date: November 13, 2025The Tennessee Titans come out of the bye week with a home game against the Houston Texans. The Texans shutout the Titans in Week 4, 26-0, but this game should be significantly closer. For that to happ...en, the Titans must attack backup quarterback Davis Mills. Mills is a fine backup who has beaten the Titans before, but he struggles most under pressure and the Titans can only get that pressure by sending the house. On offense, the Titans must create explosive plays and that will require Calvin Ridley to be good in his return from injury and the Titans offensive tackles to stand on their head. Finally, the Titans probably won't find a way to win, but the game will be close enough to be won and that means 6.5 points is a winning line! If you aren't an Everydayer, now is the perfect time to be one.
We got the second half of the season, and it is going to be a very, very important offseason for the Tennessee Titans.
You want to make sure that you're up to date.
You want to make sure that you're as informed as you could possibly be on all the different possibilities.
Again, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, 25 years as a Tennessee Titans fanatic.
Cover the team for Sports Illustrated.
USA Today, I'm a film junkie breaking down the tape over.
at Tick-Tac Titans all the time, and I've been hosting this podcast now for seven seasons.
But with that being said, again, I do think that the Tennessee Titans could keep this close.
I think the Tennessee Titans will be within one score by the fourth quarter.
And I guess that wouldn't be too shocking.
It was only 6 to nothing when the fourth quarter started when the Titans played the Texans in week four.
And somehow it finished 20 to 6 or 26 to nothing.
Like, the Titans were close in that game with the Texans.
They were right there.
They just couldn't get anything going on offense.
And let's be honest here.
I don't think that the Tennessee Titans offense is going to put up a bunch of numbers in this game either.
You know what I mean?
The Texans defense is absolutely incredible.
So what does that mean?
It means the Titans defense has to match.
That's why two of my three major keys to victory for this game are on the defensive.
side of the ball because we know that the offense isn't going to put up a big day.
So the defense has to do its job.
And the Titans defense only gave up six points in three quarters to the Texans in their first
meeting on the road in Houston with C.J. Stroud at quarterback.
And now the Texans are going to have Davis Mills at quarterback and look.
Davis Mills has beat the Titans before in Tennessee.
You know, it's not like Davis Mills is bad.
Davis Mills is a really good backup.
Davis Mills is a competent player.
He is capable of beating the Titans.
But if the Titans can shut down Davis Mills
and the Texans offense,
it at least gives them a chance and to do that,
they have to stop the run.
They must.
And whether you watch the tape and believe me
or whether you want to look at the numbers,
it is clear.
The Houston Texans,
in their five losses,
this year
114,
84, 87,
56, 77 rushing yards
as an offense.
In their wins
this year,
129, 167,
157,
1.30 last week.
Do you see the difference?
In the Texans wins,
they average 145 rushing yards a game.
In the Texans losses,
they average 83.6 yards per game.
Now, the Texans offense has been better as of late
and some of those numbers obviously come from the 0-3 start
that they had to the season.
The offense has figured it out somewhat
as my guy John Hickman from Locked on Texans talked about
in yesterday's crossover episode,
the offensive line has played better.
It's solidified, it's stabilized, it has played better in Houston.
But the Houston Texans don't have a juggerna,
at running back. Woody Marks is a good explosive young player.
Nick Chubb isn't the player that he was, but you know, it's still Nick Chub.
Like, but neither of those guys are Derek Henry, Bejohn Robinson, Jamir Gibbs, or something like that.
It's not like it's overwhelming talent that you're worried about is just going to destroy you out there.
And the offensive line while being stabilized and being better, it's not like this Texan's offensive line is God's gift to football.
Now, the Titans run defense is despicably bad.
No doubt about that, no question about that, no defense there.
And we will see if the Titans get Jeffrey Simmons back.
We'll talk a little bit more about the injury updates later in the show,
but he didn't practice on Wednesday.
And after his Instagram post, you thought Jeffrey Simmons was going to be back.
So I'm hoping, I'm hoping that he is able to get out.
on the practice field and we get to see Jeffrey Simmons play because he is obviously going
to help with the run defense and he's somebody who can absolutely dominate the Tennessee
or the Houston Texans offensive line so having Big Jeff and Tavandre sweat out there
that could really help the Tennessee Titans run defense although the Titans did give up
129 rushing yards to the Texans the last time they played and you know big Jeff was out
there but he didn't have sweat next to him so can we see can we see
see Jeffrey Simmons and Tevondre sweat on the field together at the same time
and what that might do for the Titans run defense. Can we see it?
I don't know. But whether Big Jeff is out there or not, if the Tennessee Titans don't
stop the run, if they give the Texans over 100 rushing yards, you are just giving
Davis Mills easy situations and the Titans offense is not going to have a chance
whatsoever to keep it close. Like, you're just going to ruin the whole game if you're
unable to stop the run, which quite frankly, you know, these are issues that
the Titans have had all season.
Now, building on that, the reason why stopping the run is so important
is so that you create third and long situations where you can blitz.
The Tennessee Titans need to blitz, blitz often, blitz heavy, as much as you possibly can.
I think they need to blitz on early downs as well to try to help them in run defense.
The Titans just being gap solid and gap sound and making sure that they hit their fits and all of that.
Like, that is not, that's not going to work.
Okay, they're not just going to be able to play sound solid defense
and do it that way.
They're going to have to put some pressure on the Texans.
They're going to have to get them behind the line of scrimmage.
And, you know, the Titans only blitzed 21%
when they played the Texans last time.
I think that needs to be near 30% in this game.
They must unleash the dogs.
And with no Draymont Jones now,
If you don't have Jeffrey Simmons,
like, who's going to get that pressure?
Who is going to manufacture that pressure
if you're rushing four and not blitzing?
The Titans need to blitz Kevin Winston off the edge.
The Titans need to blitz Marcus Harris off the slot.
The Titans need to blitz Cedric Gray from linebacker.
The Titans need to get incredibly creative with their pressure packages
and they need to blitz Davis Mills
because last week, Davis Mills was a totally different player.
when he was getting blitzed.
When he was blitzed, which was 34% by the Jacksonville Jaguars,
34% blitz rate against Davis Mills dropbacks.
The Titans need to be around that number.
8 for 17, 151 yards, zero touchdowns, and an interception.
If you want to look at just Davis Mills when he's under pressure,
which again, the Titans are only going to be able to get pressure if they blitz.
5 for 16, 98 yards.
so it wasn't like Davis Mills was carving up the blitz when they didn't get to him
and when he did get under pressure he melted he melted like the wicked witch of the west
you know what I mean so the Titans have to have to have to
blitz Davis Mills and then the final key to victory for me
is just pray for the offense I mean
I've said it all week
I'll say it again
there are some adjustments
that the Tennessee Titans need to make on offense
they need to play more
out of 12, 13 personnel
which if you don't know
the first number is running backs
the second number is tight ends
so you hear people say 11
personnel. That's one running back
one tight end which means
three wide receivers. You hear
people say 12 personnel
that's one running back two tight ends
13 one running back
22, two running backs, two tight ends.
You guys see how this works.
Okay, you can do that for anything.
It's four wide receivers.
It's 10 personnel, you know?
But the Titans need to play more under center.
They need to play more heavy personnel.
And the Texans' past defense is 26th.
There's an H on that.
26th
and
expected points added
against 13 personnel passes
so the Texans are one of the worst defenses
in the NFL
guarding against the pass
with three tight ends on the field
heavy tight ends
they want to be in nickel
and Jalen Petrie
who is on the injury report
may not play in this game
he is their safety slash nickel back
they want to play in nickel
so if you go to three tight ends
You go two tight ends, two running backs.
I think the Titans need to use Julius Chestnut as a fullback in this game.
Get Kelle Mullings out there as a fullback potentially.
Put Chigacquo at the fullback spot with a tight end on the field.
Like the Titans need to go heavy in this game and get the Texans in their base defense.
But with that being said, let's zoom in.
We got three players on offense, three players on defense,
that I think will slant this game towards the Titans favor if they're able to play well.
And then I'll give you my predictions for this game.
as we continue.
Do want to let you know that today's episode is brought to you by prize picks.
We all make decisions every single day,
but on prize picks being right on those decisions can get you paid.
Don't miss any of the excitement this sports season,
whether you're following the NFL, the NBA, or both.
Like me, there's no better time to jump in on the action.
If you haven't tried it yet,
prize picks is the simplest way to play you,
pick more or less on at least two player stats and if you get them right, you win.
It takes less than 60 seconds to make your lineup and you can play anywhere
prize picks operates, including California, Texas, and Georgia.
They have a new stacks feature that's a game changer.
Now you could pick more on Steph Curry's points, threes, and assists all in the same lineup.
Plus, if one of your players leaves early with an injury,
the injury reboot feature saves your lineup from a long.
Download the prize picks app today. Use the code locked on NFL to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup.
That's code locked on NFL for $50 in lineups after your first $5 lineup.
It's price picks. It's good to be right.
Titans fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast.
Talked about my keys to victory for the Tennessee Titans.
Stop the run, blitz Davis-Mills, and above all, pray for the offense.
But with that being said, we do need to talk about the individual players
that will decide this match-up and that will really change things for the Titans
if they're able to have a good game.
And we started on the defensive side of the ball with the keys to victory.
So we'll start with the offensive side of the ball
when we're talking about the players to watch
and number one on my list
is Calvin Ridley.
So the Texans' cornerback group
is really good, okay?
Kamari Lasseter, Derek Stingley,
obviously one of the best cornerbacks in the entire NFL
but their safety group.
The Houston Texans safety group
I think is vulnerable.
Okay?
I think the Titans can attack there
especially considering
that the Texans have
some injuries in the secondary, which my guy John Hickman again talked about yesterday. Jalen Petrie
is banged up. They've been playing, you know, Miles Bryant. They've been playing Kalin Bullock right
there. Even Jalen Reed, a rookie as well. I think the Tennessee Titans can take advantage
of the middle field defenders for the Texans. And we talked about this the last time we played.
I think the Texans are susceptible at the linebacker level. Aziz Al Shire is an okay player.
He's an average starting linebacker in the NFL, in my opinion.
But Henry Toa Toa has been vulnerable.
E.J. Speed, Jake Hanson.
Like, these guys can be taken advantage of over the middle of the field.
So I'm thinking deep crossing routes.
I'm thinking deep posts down the middle of the field.
Think about the Chim DK route against the New England Patriots that work.
The Patriots also have slow safeties who don't really move that well who are vulnerable.
The Patriots had linebackers who were vulnerable.
And the Tennessee Titans were able to get some things going over
the middle of the field. So I think Calvin Ridley coming across the field, the intermediate areas
in between the hashes, quick drag route, crossing route, deep post route down the field.
I think the Tennessee Titans can win over the middle of the field in this game. And quite
frankly, they must. They need explosive plays. Here's the truth, folks. The Titans are not going
to be able to go up and down the field consistently with good 10, 12 play drive.
and sustained drives and do all that.
Like, it's just not going to happen against this defense.
What the Titans need to hope for is explosive plays.
They need explosive plays that flip the field.
They need to hit some 40-50-yarders.
They need a long Tage Spears run.
The Titans are not going to be, again,
they're not going to be down-to-down efficient.
They're not going to hit you for a five-six-yard run
and then a five-six-yard pass
and then a four-yard run
and then a five-yard run
and then a two-yard completion and then keep the drive going.
They're not going to do that.
They're not.
So you've got to find a way to manufacture some explosive plays
and you do that by putting the Texan safeties and linebackers
in conflict over the middle of the field.
And who needs to take advantage of that is Calvin Ridley.
You cannot tell me that having Calvin Ridley back in the lineup
isn't going to help somewhat.
He may not be as good as he was last year.
It may not be going as good as it was last year
for him, but Calvin Ridley can still make plays.
He's still an explosive player, and the Titans need him to be.
Continuing on offense, you knew it would only be a matter of time.
We got to talk about the offensive tackles.
And look, I put J.C. Latham on my players to watch because Latham is supposed to be an elite
player. Latham is supposed to be a long-term, elite option at right tackle, and this is an
elite matchup.
So I want to see what he does.
And Latham was on injured reserve when the Titans played the Texans last time.
The Titans only gave up two sacks.
last time they played the Texans.
So it wasn't quite as bad
as it has been for most of the year.
You know what I mean?
And that was without J.C. Latham.
I thought Ali Udo played really well in that game
for the most part.
But, but
what does that have to do with this week?
It's not going to, that's,
you can't carry that over and hope for the same.
The Texans have an insane defensive end group.
Daniel Hunter, Will Anderson, Jr.,
some of the best in the entire NFL.
And if the Tennessee Titans starting offensive tackles,
get bullied
it's over
it's over
I mean it's already
looking bleak
for the Titans
offense in this matchup
just based on the matchup itself
so if the Titans
come out and get demolished
like they didn't last time
then it's going to be even worse
now the final player that I want to mention here
is Gunner Helm because again
whereas Calvin Ridley
could take advantage of the middle of the field
in the deeper intermediate areas
to the deep areas of the field
gunner helm should be able to cook this linebacker group
in the short and intermediate areas
like if the Texans want to play man on Gunnerhelm
I think he can burn any of their linebackers
if the Texans want to go into zone they need Gunner Helm to sit down
in those zones get opportunities they have to get Gunner Helm more involved
it was ridiculous and shout out to Ron Davenport
who you know TD is
by far the kindest nicest beat
reporter that I've dealt with for the Tennessee Titans.
TD is a mentor to me is giving me a ton of advice and things like that.
Whether I take the advice or not is always dependent on my stubbornness.
But TD is always there to give advice and everything like that.
So shout out to TD.
But he asked a great question and kind of peppered Mike McCoy in the press conference on
Wednesday and was like, you know, what do you think about Gunner Helm getting more
opportunities?
And he was like, yeah, you know, he's been great.
He's taking advantage.
Every time we throw him the ball, he seems to catch.
it, blah, blah, blah. And Tehran's like, well, he got one target last game.
Why not throw him the ball more? And Mike McCoy was like, well, sometimes, you know,
the play is for Gunner Helm, and then we got to go elsewhere because, you know, it's not,
you know, the Reed isn't there, he's not open or whatever. And it's like, that's nonsense.
There is no way that you could tell me that you are making a coordinated effort
to get Gunner Helm the ball and he got one target. No chance.
that falls on death here.
So great question by TD
and he followed up to hammer it home again.
Like, yeah, Mike McCoy and the offensive staffs
a bunch of bozos, man.
That like, Gunner Helm has been
the most reliable set of hands on the team all year.
He's clearly a better player
than the way he's being used.
He's still not out snapping Chick-a-Conquo.
It's like, God, you guys don't know what you're doing.
And for me, I cover the NFL at large for Lock-on.
I watch like every game.
Last week during the bye week,
I have two TVs down in my studio.
I have two big flat screens.
Yeah, I'm flexing.
Call it my mom's basement.
Bang.
But either way,
I had all eight games up,
well, seven games in the early window
with Red Zone in one of the pockets as well,
just in case.
But like,
seeing the level of offensive coaching
around the NFL
and like seeing Packers fans
complain about Matt Lafleur,
like it makes my eyes twitch,
man.
Like, you guys don't know,
how bad it could be.
The Titans' offensive coaching staff has no clue
what they're doing.
Get Gunner Helm the ball.
And this is a prime matchup
for Gunner Helm to have a breakout performance, quite honestly.
But he can't throw himself the ball.
He can't call plays for himself.
He can't, you know, what can we do?
But we all see it, right?
We all see that Gunner Helm is a good player.
Right, right, right, I'm not going crazy.
Okay, great.
We moved to the defensive side of the ball.
I talked about blitzing Davis Mills.
I talked about stopping the run.
That's Cedric Gray, folks.
Cody Bartney ain't blitzing nobody.
He doesn't have the speed and the aggressiveness and the physicality
and the tenaciousness to get downhill tenacity.
I always want to say tenaciousness, but it's tenacity.
The ferocity.
Love that word.
Very strong, aggressive word.
But that is Cedric Gray.
Cedric Gray is going to get downhill.
He's been a good blitzer this year.
We saw him get a sack last week, destroying a lot.
or two weeks ago against
the Chargers. They have to get
Cedric Gray involved in the Blitz game.
And I mean on early downs too to attack the run,
not just in the pass rush. Okay, they have
to do that. And then
my guy John Hickman from yesterday's crossover,
if you guys missed the crossover episode, such good
information in there from behind enemy lines.
But he talked about how Dalton Schultz
has really been good lately. The Texans
tight end. So
Cedric Gray, wiping out the tight end.
Cedric Gray blitzing on early downs and past
He's got to have a big time game.
Top five tackler in the NFL right now.
Really good play.
Kevin Winston.
Same thing.
Let's see him in man coverage on Dalton Schultz.
Let's see him take him away.
And the Texans are probably going to try to attack deep against the Titans like everybody does.
And Kevin Winston has to help out the cornerbacks.
He has to come downhill and take away passing lanes.
He has to knock balls out of wide receiver's hands when they throw to him
and jar the ball loose.
Like, he's got to do a lot here.
And not only that,
but I talked about blitzing, blitzing, blitzing.
Kevin Winston has been involved in some blitz packages
and some rush packages,
where he is literally functioning as a defensive end,
as an edge rusher.
I think he's capable of doing stuff like that.
I think that's a creative way to deal with the Titans' lack of talent
on the edge right now as well.
But I want to see Kevin Winston getting into the bat field,
knocking the ball loose,
just be a playmaker all over the field.
And then finally, to Vondre Sweat.
self-explanatory here right
got to be able to stop the run
got to collapse the pocket on Davis Mills
a guy who's not a great runner
who's not going to get out and get up through the pocket
and scramble and get yards with his legs
this is a prime opportunity for Tavondre sweat
to make a major impact stopping the run
and pushing the pocket from the interior
I think that would be a massive help
to the Tennessee Titans efforts in this game
so on offense Calvin Ridley
the offensive tackles in Gunner Helm on defense,
Cedric Gray, Kevin Winston, Tavadre Sweat.
Let me know your guys' players to watch
in this game down below,
but now it is time for my score,
my gambling, my fantasy predictions
for this matchup.
I do want to let you guys know
that today's episode is brought to you.
By game time,
the NFL season is obviously here.
We're halfway through the year
and there's nothing better
than being in the stadium surrounded by fans cheering on your team.
But let's be honest, getting tickets can be a hassle.
Between queues, login screens, prices jumping at checkout, it's frustrating.
That's why I use GameTime, the app that gives the advantage back to the fans.
Game time is fast, it's easy, it's backed by the game time guarantee.
You'll always get 100% authentic tickets delivered on time and at the best price.
Plus, all fees are included.
So the price you see is the price that you pay.
I pulled up game time recently and in just a couple of taps,
I saw amazing deals and I'm talking about your favorite NFL games
for as low as $100.
And if you want to go see the Titans,
you'll probably find a better deal than even that.
Honestly, it's faster, it's cheaper, it's less stressful
than any other way I bought tickets.
That's why I bought NFL, MBA, WMBA,
concert comedy tickets.
All on GameTime.

victory went over players to watch. Now I've got to get into my predictions and the first
prediction that we go over as my game and score prediction before we dive in.
Thanks again for making Locked on Titans your first listen and thank you again as well
for making the locked on podcast network. Now the number one sports podcast network but for my
prediction you know I started looking into some things I always make a pseudo
prediction on the crossover Thursday episode where I'm leaning what I'm thinking this and that
But then I have more time to look through film, look through data.
You know, Wednesday when I record the crossover is more of a fact-finding mission.
I want to ask the host of the other team what he thinks about the team.
And it kind of gives me some leads.
And, you know, I've been doing a little more research here on where the Texans vulnerable points are,
like we've talked about in the keys to victory.
And I think the Tennessee Titans keep this closer than I did in the crossover episode.
I think I said 23 to 13, something like that in the crossover.
episode. I think the Tennessee Titans defense
has a better performance than
that. Now, I cannot,
I cannot in good faith. I did it with
the Chargers. I did it.
I think
the Colts game
or the Texans game originally,
one of the two in the first four weeks. I picked
the Titans to win. I thought they could get the win.
I thought they could upset the Chargers.
They only lost by 7. It was right there if the
offense could do anything. Like I felt
great about the chances that the Titans gave themselves.
They played, I just had a feeling.
The Titans would do some crazy things.
A pick six on defense, a kick return.
Like, the Titans would keep it close and pull up and upset.
And they let me down by seven points.
And the offense did nothing.
So I can't, I can't in good faith pick the Titans to win.
But I will tell you this.
I think this is close.
And I think the Titans have a chance to win this game.
I think they will have a chance to win this game.
in the fourth quarter. They will be close.
16 to 13.
I think the Texans ultimately win.
I think the Titans' offense just simply cannot do enough,
especially late in the game to make it happen.
But if the Titans won this game, 20 to 16, 19 to 16, 16 to 16 to 13 themselves,
I would not be shocked at all.
I do not think this is a blowout.
I do not think that the Texans win by double-digit points.
I think the Tennessee Titans absolutely keep this close.
have a chance to win in the fourth quarter.
I just can't bet on this team to get the job done.
So I'm going Texans, 16 to 13,
but I do think the Titans will keep it close
and have a chance to win.
That's why you look at the line.
I know at this point betting on the Titan spread,
not been great for you.
They have not been good against the spread this year.
They're getting blasted when they lose.
But plus six and a half at home, I'll take it.
I'll take it.
Like, again, I think the Titans keep this close with Davis-Mills in.
The Titans can attack that.
I think the Titans do better in run defense in this game than the 129 they gave up early in the year.
I will take the Titans plus six and a half.
You guys know I hate over-unders.
I hate over-unders, 37-5.
I'm calling 16-13, so that's 29 points.
So clearly take the under 37-5.
But I don't trust it.
I never trust it.
I don't like over-unders.
They're not for me.
But anyway, my beautiful, dark-twisted fantasy player of the week is Tajay Spears.
If you need a cheat player in daily fantasy,
you got injuries by week, stuff like that,
and season-long fantasy, throw Taj Spears in here.
I think he makes a ton of sense.
I think whether the Titans are in the game
or whether the Titans get blown out,
there are going to be dump-offs to the running backs.
They're going to have to run screens
with the pressure that the Texans are going to be able to get.
No matter how this game goes, I think Taji Spears will do well in fantasy football.
But with that being said, that is going to do it for my game plan edition.
Week 11, the Titans host the Houston Texans.
Let me know your game and score predictions down below for this one.
What do you think the score is going to be?
I'll be back with you guys on Sunday live after the game to break it all down.
Tennessee Titans football is back, folks.
Strap in and get ready for the second half of the season.
But that's going to do it for me today.
As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
