Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans CANCEL Shedeur Sanders Meeting, Going GUARD at 35 & Terrible Titans Trade Down

Episode Date: April 6, 2025

The Tennessee Titans cancelled their private workout with Sheduer Sanders and proved once again that Cam Ward will be the choice at #1 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, even if some are reluctant to see ...it. Now that we know Cam Ward is the quarterback of the future, the draft starts at pick 35 for the Titans and they have a tough choice there. With many needs, the Titans could do a ton of different things. One of those routes see them sticking and picking, but would they do that for a guard? Also, the Titans could trade down, but not every trade down is good for the Titans. Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=asc Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videos Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!ChewyChewy has everything you need to keep your pet happy and healthy. We will start the 2025 locked on Titans NFL draft preview series. I'm going to do a full episode on Cam Ward, his strengths, his weaknesses, where he needs
Starting point is 00:01:44 to improve, how he fits. Then we're going to go over the rest of the quarterbacks, the running backs, the wide receivers, every position on offense and defense, nearly 200 different prospects. You don't want to miss a single episode. But with that being said, we do got to talk about what happened over the weekend because the Tennessee Titans outright canceled, canceled their private workout and private meeting with Shider Sanders.
Starting point is 00:02:09 Just outright canceled it entirely. That tells you all you need to know folks. Like it's not just Shider Sanders either that the meeting was canceled with. It was Travis Hunter as well. So if the Titans were saying, Hey Travis Hunter, we don't want to waste your time. Hey, Shudder Sanders, we don't want to waste your time. Or it was the other way around. Shudder Sanders camp, Deion Sanders saying, hey, you aren't picking my son.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Why are we doing this? It's a waste of time for everybody. And now they're not doing it. Guys, it makes it as clear as it can possibly make it. They're taking Cam Ward number one overall. We continue to hear the Tennessee Titans are not even getting realistic offers and conversations going with the Cleveland Browns
Starting point is 00:02:55 and the New York Giants, because the Titans know who they're going to take. The Titans know what they're going to do. And I wanna talk about Shiner Sanders pro Pro Day first before I go to anything else. Like there was a lot of division on Shider Sanders Pro Day, which anytime the Sanders family is involved in anything, the NFL cognizant and ecosystem seems to be divided, right? But there were some folks pointing out how he packs the ball and how the ball wasn't jumping off his hands and you know different Location issues on curl routes and outside routes and different things like that, you know
Starting point is 00:03:32 But I didn't really see anything in Cheddar Sanders pro day that made me say oh look he's worse I told you like Cheddar Sanders is a I would say low round first round pick Maybe high second round pick. I think that's the talent level that he's at. He doesn't have the high upside that Cam Ward does. He doesn't have as good of an arm. It doesn't come off with the velocity and the pop that Cam Ward's does. He doesn't have as good of elusiveness in the pocket.
Starting point is 00:03:56 I think he's an OK. I mean, he's going to be an NFL starting quarterback. He's a good athlete. But to me, Cam Ward is a little bit better of an athlete in terms of mobility, explosiveness, physicalness as a runner, his size, his bulk, his mass. I think Cam Ward is clearly a better prospect. And I guess I'm not overly surprised that we're starting to hear that Shadr Sanders might slide outside of the top three. I'm not surprised to hear that at the end of the day, but either way. What I thought about Shiner Sanders was not changed in any way by the pro day.
Starting point is 00:04:33 I had never thought that he had this crazy arm that it was going to be like, whoa, the ball jumps off his hand. Like, you know, we, we know these things. So to me, it's like, did you know who Shiner Sanders really was as a prospect before the pro day or were you shocked by some of the, you know, like, I just think he is who he is and I could see him getting drafted anywhere from, you know, six all the way to 20, but I don't think he's going past the Steelers at 21. But with that being said, moving right along, I do want to talk more about who the Titans eventual starting quarterback is going to be in this cam more. And I know that there are some people who are hesitant to get on board with
Starting point is 00:05:12 the cam ward selection because he's not a generational quarterback prospect, I guess is what you would say. And he's not Joe burrow. He's not Andrew love, honestly. And just as a prospect in college coming out into the draft, he's not Trevor Lawrence, all three of those guys were more like, Oh yeah, that's the number one pick in the draft, no doubt about it. But like those three guys were more consensus number one picks.
Starting point is 00:05:44 Then what cam wardens that's the reality. like those three guys were more consensus number one picks than what Cam Ward is. That's the reality. And I get that is a hesitation point for some people, but here's what I would say. Cam Ward has really, really good tape. He's gotten better every single year. And no matter where he's went, he's gotten the best out of the people around him. That matters. You combine that fact with he has blown them away behind the scenes. As a leader, we saw a video from over the weekend. My guy Justin Graver, Titan Film Room, posted a clip from a show. I don't know. I don't remember exactly what it was.
Starting point is 00:06:20 But it's Michael Irvin who went to Miami talking about Cam Warden, how there was a wide receiver on Miami Who was thrown with Lamar Jackson in Florida and Cam Ward called him and said no you come down here and throw with us your Teammates or I'm not gonna throw you the ball this year That's the leadership that I want hey You're with us or you're against us. Either you tighten up or you tighten down That's what I want from my quarterback. So again, when you have good tape, you've improved every year and you are off the charts at the things that you want from a quarterback behind
Starting point is 00:06:59 the scenes. That is a number one overall pick. That's a guy that you can't pass on. And I will go back to what has been my take this entire draft process. My preference, my number one option is a trade down for the Titans. I like Abdul Carter. I think Travis Hunter is incredible. I think both those guys are going to be great players in the NFL. But I said all along, if the Tennessee Titans truly feel like one of these guys is their franchise quarterback,
Starting point is 00:07:30 that they can build this program and build this culture around, you cannot pass on that player. You simply can't. That's what I would tell you is look, luck, quit after what what six or seven years, nine years, didn't get to his full potential, never won anything of value. Trevor Lawrence, the jury's out of whether he's a true franchise quarterback or not. So just because a guy is a consensus number one pick more than what Cam Ward feels like this year does not mean that that gives them a better advantage to be a better quarterback or that the Titans are taking a bigger risk. The reality is it's usually guys who aren't the
Starting point is 00:08:10 cleanest quarterback prospect in the generational guy. Josh Allen, seven, QB three, Patrick Mahomes. What was he? QB two that year. Lamar Jackson went 32. So remember the best quarterbacks in the NFL outside of Joe Burrow out of the top four, the majority of them were not number one. Overall picks are clean consensus guys. So I'm just saying I get the hesitations. I understand, but Ken Ward's blown the Titans away behind the scenes. He has good enough tape to be the number one pick. And he is going to be the Tennessee
Starting point is 00:08:45 Titans franchise quarterback. So with that being said though, now it's about what the Titans do after that. We'll do a little mock draft Monday with some big-time mocks and I'll show you some different scenarios that could play out here. We talked about the Tennessee Titans canceling their meeting with Chaudhry Sanders and what it means for cam ward and the Tennessee Titans and some thoughts there. Now I want to talk about what happens after cam ward, because the reality
Starting point is 00:10:28 is whenever we do mock drafts or anything like that, going forward, the rest of this month until the draft gets here, number one pick is going to be. I thought about spicing it up and doing some mock trades, but that's not reality. Folks, those things aren't going to happen. Okay. So we can talk about them, but I'm not going to devote a bunch of time to it. Cam ward's going to be the number one pick. So what happens after that?
Starting point is 00:10:54 Well, the question is when you get to pick 35, do you stick and pick or do you trade down and what the talent on the board, if you decide to stick and pick, what do you take becomes the question and I have a do you take? Becomes a question. And I have a scenario here that I want to go over. It comes from Matt Miller from ESPN. He did a seven round mock draft and he has the Tennessee Titans sticking and picking at 35. And I thought it was a very interesting pick and something that we need to
Starting point is 00:11:18 seriously discuss and I picked number 35 Matt Miller from ESPN, a friend of the program who I've had on. Pick Tyler Booker, the guard from Alabama. He picks the edge rusher from Oregon, Jordan Birch at one Oh three. Kyle Williams, the wide receiver from Washington state at one 20 Danny Stutzman, the linebacker from Oklahoma at one 41 Mac, Nick Williams, the quarterback from central Florida at one 67 Max and hook the safety from Toledo at 178 and Colin Oliver, the edge rusher out of Oklahoma state at 188. But I want to focus on this Tyler Booker selection here. So Booker is an interesting player based on the tape and based on what we
Starting point is 00:12:02 saw from Tyler Booker in college. I think he's a top 20 selection. Could conceivably be the number one guard off the board. I don't think that that would be crazy for a guy like Tyler Booker. And there are some people who think that he goes anywhere in the 20s in the draft. So from the tape, he's a first round talent. But here's the reality. He has a 3.68 RAS, which is relative athletic score, which is something that Kentley Platt puts together. Look, if you're totally unaware of RAS, you're probably like, this is nonsense, blah, blah, blah.
Starting point is 00:12:40 But it's pretty obvious that players with low RAS scores, typically by the numbers, if you're playing a percentage game, don't work out as well as players who are better athletes. Tyler Booker is not a great athlete. His testing scores were not good. All right. So you wonder, was he just a big bully at six foot four, 320 pounds with 34 and a half inch monster long arms? Was he just a bully at the college level and he's not going to be able to do that
Starting point is 00:13:08 because he's not quite the athlete that he needs to be and taking him this high in the draft would be a mistake. That's the conversation that you have about Tyler Book. If you want to say, hey, he's a football player throw on the tape. That's a man child right with that massive road grading offensive tack or offensive line. Okay. All right. I could hear that. I could hear that. But it's about what the Titans will do. And I'll be honest with you. I do think Booker is a great fit for what the Titans want. The Titans want big body guards. We're not doing any Aaron Brewer stuff anymore.
Starting point is 00:13:45 We're not having smaller guards. All right, the Titans want a power offensive line with guys who can run power, gap scheme runs, man runs, where they bully somebody off the spot. That's what the Titans want now. So I think Tyler Booker philosophically fits perfectly with what the Titans want to do. The question becomes, can you take him at 35?
Starting point is 00:14:07 Can you take guard? I personally think that you can. You can take guard at 35. I don't know if I would be willing to take Booker there because of the athletic limitations. I'm willing to take guard if the Titans find a way to make a trade back. But if the Titans aren't trading back and they're sticking and picking at 35, I don't think that Tyler Booker is the player that you can do that for. There was, I mean, they passed on Donovan Jackson.
Starting point is 00:14:35 Donovan Jackson from Ohio State who played incredible at left tackle during the Buckeyes playoff run. I would probably take Donovan Jackson over Tyler Book. James Pierce Jr. I get the the character concerns. I don't care. All right. Trey Harris, Jay Higgins. All on the board. Now I think it may be just a touch too early for Trey Harris and Jay Higgins right there. So I get it. But I'm just saying that you put yourself because look at the rest of the draft. You get Jordan Birch at 103. Okay. Awesome. You get an edge rusher. Birch is six foot four, 280 pounds, 33.75 inch arms. So he fits the profile of the bigger edge, big physical edge that Titans want. A pure five technique type guy and a three four defense he can be a defensive end when you're in a four man front he can play a hand in the dirt
Starting point is 00:15:29 defensive end he's not super explosive he needs a more refined pass rush plan but you see some stuff you see a little inside spin you know you see some hand work but not a guy with great explosion but at 103 you also pass on Braden Swinson and Wyatt Millam and Sabion Jones. I personally, in this mock draft from Matt Miller, I would have rather have gone with James Pierce and Wyatt Millam over Tyler Booker and Jordan Burch. I feel like if I got James Pierce Jr. and Wyatt Millam, I am addressing offensive line and defensive line,
Starting point is 00:16:05 pass rush and pass blocking with better players. So that's why I look at this mock draft and I'm like, I get the idea, but the execution of it, I don't quite agree with. And then at 120, getting Kyle Williams, people are talking about taking Kyle Williams at 35 right now. I think that's too rich.
Starting point is 00:16:22 I'm gonna be honest with you. But I thought that Ricky Pearsall. That early last year for the San Francisco 49ers in the late 20s. I thought that or it was 31 because they were they went to the Super Bowl and lost that year, but I thought that was too rich for Ricky Pearsall.
Starting point is 00:16:37 I couldn't believe that Pierce all went that high, so maybe Williams does go higher than I expect him to, but. I like Kyle Williams. Incredible release package off the line of scrimmage Versatility to play all positions. He's physical catching the football He'll make some guys miss as well with the ball in his hands like Kyle Williams is a really good player I think he should be a second round wide receiver
Starting point is 00:16:58 Maybe early third round wide receiver for the Titans. I would take him, you know, So the reality is at pick one 20, he's probably not going to be there. And if the Titans went Tyler Booker, Jordan Burke, Birch, and then didn't end up with somebody in the Kyle Williams pocket that I've talked about recently with like Jayden Higgins, Jaylen Noel, Trey Harris, Isaiah bond, um, Kyle Williams, Savion Williams, guys in that maybe that's not the entire collection of guys but guys in that range. If the Titans don't get one of those guys in the draft I'm going to be significantly concerned about what they can do going forward. But I mean after that do going forward. But I mean, after that, you know, Danny Stutzman could be a Cody Barton replacement if he develops more feel and coverage and is better at reading defenses and stuff like that. Mac McWilliams at cornerback, five foot 10, 190 pounds, 23 years old, not going
Starting point is 00:17:59 to get much development out of him. Titans don't really need more slot corners with JBJ and Roger McCurry. I don't know how I feel about that. Maxin Hook, safety at Toledo, not a great athlete. Good size though, six foot 200, whatever. Dart throws at the end. Same thing with Colin Oliver, six one two 40. That's a small edge. I don't think that fits with the Titans look. So overall I would get, I would give this mock draft like a C. I do not think this is a good use of the resources that the Titans have after Cam Ward. And I would give this mock draft like a C. I do not think this is a good use of the resources that the Titans have after Cam Ward. And I would much prefer a trade down for the Titans
Starting point is 00:18:30 if this was on the other side of the other door of a trade down. But the problem is not every trade down is a good trade down. And I wanna show you guys a five round mock draft from Chad Ruder of NFL.com that is not a good trade down for the Tennessee Titans. So I guess both of these mock drafts
Starting point is 00:18:48 are what I hope the Titans draft doesn't look like. Today's episode is brought to you by Monarch Money. Ever check your bank account and wonder, where did all my money go? Let's cap off today's edition of the locked on Titans podcast, doing a little mock draft Monday after talking about the Titans canceling their private workout and private meeting with Shitter Sanders. Before we get into the final mock draft and a trade down that is back for the Titans, I do want to thank you again for making Locked on Titans your first listen each and every day. Remember, tomorrow I'm going to do a breakdown on Cam Ward. I'm going to have a film video on the Tic Tac Titans channel up on Tuesday morning to go
Starting point is 00:20:44 with that conversation. Then we're going to look at the rest of the Tic Tac Titans channel up on Tuesday morning to go with that conversation. Then we're going to look at the rest of the QBs, running backs, wide receivers. We'll get to offensive line later in the week as well. Defense around the turn. I mix in some news and stuff there so there may be gaps in between certain positions, certain days, depending on what happens. Titans make signings, trades, stuff like that. But I'm going to go over every single position, nearly 200 prospects. Make sure that you get subscribed, stay subscribed. It's your team every day.
Starting point is 00:21:09 Check out Locked on NFL Draft right now too. It's a great time. But let's look at the Chad Rooter mock draft from NFL.com. So Cam Ward, number one overall, obviously put it in the book. But then the Titans make a trade down at pick number 35. And look, I think a trade down at 35 is nearly necessary depending on who falls to that position. And we'll talk about that when it happens and we can talk about, you know, I've already talked a little bit about camp
Starting point is 00:21:34 pass prospects at pick number 35. I'll reiterate that as we get closer to the draft, of course, and we have a full conversation about that, not just within a mock draft, but I think overall a trade down does make the most sense for the Tennessee Titans because they need to find a way to get another pick in the top 100. And in this mock draft, Chad Rutter as the Titans trading down with Seattle Seahawks from pick number 35 to pick 50 and picking up pick number 92. So the Titans go from having 35 to 50 and 92. Overall that trade, I think the Titans don't get enough value. That's not good enough. In my opinion, 50 and 92 compared to what we've seen in recent years.
Starting point is 00:22:15 If I'm the Titans and I want to kick in a little bit extra to make sure that I don't have to drop down so far, like I'll throw in 120, I'll throw in 141, something like that. I'm more than willing to do that to facilitate a trade like this, but 50 and 92 are not high enough picks. You have picked 103. So I'm not passing up on all the prospects that are available at 35 to drop down to pick as I nearly knock my desk off track here trying to change my notes but you pass on a chance at Luther Burden you pass on a chance at Grey Zebel you pass on a chance at James Pierce jr. twice at 35 and at 50 you pass on Jalen Noel you pass on Donovan Jackson you pass on Landon Jackson you pass on Jalen Noel, you pass on Donovan Jackson, you pass on Landon Jackson, you pass on Jayden Higgins, you pass on Jack Beck, you pass on Jack Sawyer, which I would do too at
Starting point is 00:23:10 that point, but like you're just passing on a lot of people at 35 that I think makes sense and you're dropping back far enough to where you can't get any of them and then the Titans get to pick 50 and they take JT to Lamalau from Ohio State to a Malauau there we go six foot four 265 pounds so he does give you the big physical edge rusher that you're looking for 34.875 inch arms so great length and he uses that length he's a smart player he understands what his responsibilities are he He'll hold his gap. He can see things happening before they happen. He gets it to the backfield. He has production. He's long.
Starting point is 00:23:49 He's physical. He's just not a super explosive athlete at the end of the day. He's not going to have like that bend and that dip around the corner. He's not going to get off the line of scrimmage. And quite frankly, after watching him at Ohio state, he didn't like win one on one against offensive tackles over and over. A lot of it was cleanup stuff and effort stuff. And I don't know if you could take a player like that with your second round pick. I think JTT is
Starting point is 00:24:12 probably an early third round pick or a late second round pick, but the Tennessee Titans, I don't think need to go this route. Like you can't pass on a James Pierce Jr. You can't pass on a Luther Burden to drop back this far and then end up with JTT and then at pick number 92 They get Dante Thornton out of Tennessee Dante Thornton is a day three pick. Yeah, he's six five He's over 200 pounds. He's big physical and he's fast as lightning
Starting point is 00:24:42 but like He's not a refined enough player to take if the Titans and they passed on at 92 Wyatt Millam and Prince Umami Ellen. You're telling me that the Tennessee Titans could have Cam Ward, Luther Burton and Prince Umami Ellen. And instead they leave with Cam Ward, JTT and Dante Thornton. That would be a disaster. That's not a good trade down scenario.
Starting point is 00:25:13 And then the Titans take cornerback at pick 103, Jacob Parrish. Parrish is five foot nine. He's a slot cornerback. He's slender with good speed, not good at the catch point, but he'll press you and get up in your face. Just like Jarvis Brownlee, but the Titans have Roger McCreary and Jarvis Brownlee Jr. So do they really need to go get a small five foot nine slot cornerback with their 103 pick? No.
Starting point is 00:25:39 And they passed on Elec Ayo Manor, Brad Swinson, and Andrew McCuba to do it. So the Titans could have had Cam Ward, James Pierce Jr., Wyatt Millam, and Elec Aomanner as their top four picks. and Elec Aomanner as their top four picks. That is home run, knock it out of the park. You could have even done Cam Ward, Trey Harris, Prince, Prince Lee Umami Ellen, Andrew Mokuba. That would be a pretty good. You don't get offensive line there, but that would be pretty good. I mean, for the Titans to come out of it with our top four being cam JTT Thornton and perish. That would be a nightmare, quite honestly.
Starting point is 00:26:37 And then with the fifth round pick one 20, the Titans took cam scataboo errors. Everybody knows cam at this point, big physical runner. No, he's not the fastest guy 40 time isn't that great? blah blah agility testing this and that but he's just a pure physical runner of the football. He reminds me of like Maurice jones drew or doug martin, you know what I mean like that kind of guy bowling ball type guy So titans need a power runner. They may take running back earlier than people expect. I wouldn't be shocked. I think this is last year for Tony Pollard and who knows if they can count on Tajay Spears, so they need running back more than, uh, more
Starting point is 00:27:15 than I think people realize. But again, not every mock draft can be a good mock draft for the Titans. And we're seeing two examples of a guy at 35 that you stick and pick, and then a trade down that both I don't think would be very good for the Titans. And we're seeing two examples of a guy at 35 that you stick and pick and then a trade down that both I don't think would be very good for the Titans. But either way, all of them start with Cam Ward at number one overall, but that's going to do it for me today, folks. As always, I am your host Tyler Rowland and this was locked on tight.
