Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast. I am your host, Tyler Rowland. Titans fans, on today's show, we have to talk about the final cut the Titans had to make to get down to 80. We've been waiting for the last shoe to drop. Turns out it wasn't a shoe, it was a kick. Then, the Titans do have joint practices with the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday. I'm going to preview what you need to be watching for as that takes place.
Starting point is 00:00:30 And then finally, time to give you guys the information you need to join our second annual Locked On Titans Fantasy Football League. Stay tuned to the end of the show to figure out how you can enter and have a chance to be on the show the whole time. So a lot to talk about on today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. Let's get it. You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast
Starting point is 00:01:04 Network, your team every day. Daily Tennessee Titans Podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network. Your team, every day. Titans fans, we do have a lot to discuss on today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. The Titans finally cut the roster down to 80. How they did it has some interesting news, and it has some good news for second-year linebacker Monty Rice. Also got a preview joint practices with the Arizona Cardinals, and then give you guys the information you need to get into the second annual Locked On Titans Fantasy Football League with a chance to win a full-time slot on the show next offseason. But before we get into today's stuff, I do want to let you guys know that today's episode
Starting point is 00:01:56 is brought to you by LinkedIn Jobs. LinkedIn Jobs helps you find the candidate that you want to talk to faster. Post your job for free at linkedin.com slash locked on NFL. Also, thank you for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen every day. If this is your first ever listen, make sure you subscribe on whatever platform
Starting point is 00:02:16 you do stream. I am putting out daily Monday through Friday free Tennessee Titans content all year round on all platforms, including the Locked On Titans YouTube channel. Subscribe there. Smash the notification bell.
Starting point is 00:02:29 Throw a thumbs up if you're watching on YouTube right now. But with all that said, time to dive into today's show. And we talked on yesterday's show about how the Titans had to get down to 80 players by 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday. Now, the Titans got the party going early on Monday when they released four different players. Terry Godwin, Justin Lawler, Shakur Brown, and Shaheem Carter. But that's only four, and it had to be five.
Starting point is 00:02:58 So we've been waiting for the other shoe to drop. And I'll go back to a terrible corny joke I made in the intro and say that it wasn't the other shoe that dropped. It was the other shoe to drop. And I'll go back to a terrible corny joke I made in the intro and say that it wasn't the other shoe that dropped. It was the other kick. And I mean kicker Caleb Schuttick. So Caleb Schuttick has been injured since the beginning of training camp. And on Tuesday, the Titans decided they weren't ready to let him go. So, Caleb Shudick has been added to the physically unable to perform list reserve.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Now, there have been guys on the PUP active, which is what Monty Rice has been and Caleb Shudick has been. They've been on the roster, but they just haven't been able to practice. Well, the reserve is more of the traditional version of PUP that you guys would think of where there's a requirement that you miss games in the regular season. Now, the NFL has altered the rules on how this works. It used to be minimum six games you would have to miss if you were placed on PUP reserve. Well, now the NFL has changed it to only four games. So Caleb Shudick was placed on PUP reserve on Tuesday,
Starting point is 00:04:14 which means he will miss the first four games of the year. But because he was placed on PUP, that takes him off the active roster. And now the Titans are down to that 80 number. There are 80 players on the roster. So we got the four cuts yesterday. And then Caleb Shudick on PUP today. So that's the five people that they had to trim off the roster. And here's why they put Caleb Shudick on the PUP
Starting point is 00:04:41 rather than just waiving him with an injury designation. They want to see more of him. They don't want to let Caleb Schuttick go. I think that's pretty interesting that while Randy Bullock has had a great camp, while you got a home here, Randy, you got a home here. As Mike Vrabel said last season, the Titans still, still want to take a look at Caleb Schuttick. And Eli is in the comments saying, I think it's Schuttick. Yeah, I know. That's what I'm saying. Caleb Schuttick. And Eli is in the comments saying, I think it's Schuttick.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Yeah, I know. That's what I'm saying. Caleb Schuttick. Thank you. But anyways, moving forward here, the good news about all of this is Monte Rice, the second-year linebacker out of Georgia, was not placed on PUP reserve.
Starting point is 00:05:23 So that means that at this time, Monte Rice can still rejoin the Tennessee Titans in training camp and be ready for the 53-man roster on opening day. So that's great news. They're not ready to give up on Monty Rice being ready for the season. But, it's only fair,
Starting point is 00:05:47 it's only fair that I tell you guys, that this doesn't mean that Monty Rice won't go on PUP at all. Okay? So a week from today, it's Tuesday afternoon right now, a week from today, the Titans have to cut the roster from 80 to 53.
Starting point is 00:06:01 If Monty Rice isn't ready to go, or they don't think he's going to be ready within the next couple of days, a week from now, then he may still ultimately end up on PUP. But the fact that Caleb Shudick was placed on PUP to open the rosters or to take away that cut need
Starting point is 00:06:16 and Monty Rice wasn't, I mean, that's great news. That's great news. Monty Rice, of course, coming back from an Achilles injury. We haven't got full Monty Rice, of course, coming back from an Achilles injury. We haven't got full details on whether that was just, you know, an Achilles injury or a full Achilles rupture. We don't know.
Starting point is 00:06:32 At this time, we may never know because the Titans never had to divulge that information. But what we do know is that Monty Rice is not on PUP yet, and that still gives him the opportunity to rejoin the roster by the time that it's cut down to 53. And with Dylan Cole being hurt and outside of that you only have the two rookies in Campbell
Starting point is 00:06:56 and Gibbons and Joe Jones the Titans are thin at inside linebacker right now. So it would be a big deal if the Titans could get Monty Rice back in the fold by the time it's time to cut down to 53 next Tuesday. But with that being said,
Starting point is 00:07:14 wanted to give you guys that update on Monty Rice, Caleb Shudick, where the roster is right now. But next, we do got to talk about joint practices between the Titans and the Arizona Cardinals. And Eli, I hear you, but if you go into the pronunciation guides, Shudak, that's not correct. I'm going to push back on that. The Titans pronunciation guide on their roster,
Starting point is 00:07:38 Dane Brugler's pronunciation guide in his draft, the Beast, none of them said it was Shudak. Shudak is what they say on the pronunciation. So, we see Travis Kelsey told everybody, my name's Kels. We saw, what is it, Darius Leonard tell everybody
Starting point is 00:07:58 his name's actually Shaquille and he wants to go by Shaq Leonard. We saw Alvin Kamara come out and say, Kamara, Kamara, doesn't really matter. So, Eli, you might be right. You might be right. And all the pronunciation guides may be wrong.
Starting point is 00:08:14 I mean, it's hard telling. And these guys just don't want to tell anybody what their real name is either. Very strange stuff. But either way, appreciate you, Eli. You're just trying to give me the best information possible. Thank you for that. But that is going to give me the best information possible. Thank you for that. That is going to do it for our discussion on the roster transactions. Now I want to move
Starting point is 00:08:29 into that preview of joint practices between the Titans and the Arizona Cardinals. Of course, at the end of the show, giving you guys the information you need to join the Locked On Titans Fantasy Football League this year. Before we get into all of that, though, I want to tell you more about our title sponsor, LinkedIn. As you gear up for the fall, you need the right people on your team to

Starting point is 00:09:53 That's linkedin.com slash locked on NFL to post your job for free. Terms and conditions do apply. Titans fans, we're going to continue today's show. We just talked about the Titans roster transactions from Tuesday and why it's good news for second-year linebacker Monty Rice. Now, I want to preview joint practices between the Titans and the Arizona Cardinals. And I say joint practices, but what I really should say is joint practice. That's right, singular, practice. I'll explain in just a moment.
Starting point is 00:10:41 Also, we're going to be talking about the Locked On Titans Fantasy Football League at the end of the show. That means it's fantasy draft season. So while I thank you guys for making the Locked On Titans podcast your first listen every day, make sure that you guys check out the Locked On Fantasy Football podcast and Locked On Fantasy Dynasty podcast. As they're doing fantasy draft week,
Starting point is 00:11:01 they're giving you their top 10 positional lists all week long on both shows. So make sure you guys check that out on whatever platform you do stream. But moving into joint practices, two big news items here. So number one, Mike Frabel came out and said on Monday that the Titans are actually only doing one joint practice with the Arizona Cardinals. They're only going to practice together on Wednesday. And then on Thursday, they're going to depart and practice separately.
Starting point is 00:11:27 And Mike Vrabel cited wanting to keep everybody healthy because both teams are dealing with injuries, guys banged up. The season's right around the corner. You don't want to go too hard and practice at this time, and then two days later have most of those guys play in a preseason game. The Cardinals are excessively banged up. They got a lot of health issues over there. So I'm sure that Cliff Kingsbury had mentioned to Mike Grable,
Starting point is 00:11:52 hey, man, we might only want to do one day because we don't want to push too hard. I'm sure Mike Grable said, all right, that's fine. I believe that the Cardinals are going to practice at Vanderbilt's facility on Thursday, but only one joint practice. And that means that like Malik Willis said last week, he said, it's exciting that we can watch the tape, come back and make corrections the next day. Well, that's not going to be able to happen here. It's going to be one day full tilt practice, joint practices between the Cardinals and the Titans. And, you know, the Titans better take this seriously.
Starting point is 00:12:26 I don't know about them, but I know I remember that 38-13 drubbing that the Cardinals put on the Titans in week one of last year. And I would imagine there are some guys on the Titans, Taylor LeJuan, for example, may want to redeem himself a little bit. Now, Chandler Jones isn't there, and here's the second big news item.
Starting point is 00:12:50 J.J. Watts not going to be there. What is it with these NFL superstars scared to come down to Tennessee? All jokes aside, J.J. Watts has he has COVID. I hope he has a healthy return and a healthy recovery. But either way, I can't help but point out the irony
Starting point is 00:13:09 that Tom Brady and then TJ Watt back-to-back, the two biggest stars, involve both skip joint practices with the Titans. Because the Titans are a physical football team. And they're going to come out there and punch you in the mouth. And if I'm an old vet who's been through a million training camps, I don't want to go down there and get knocked up by Tennessee. Yeah, they're scurred. That's right. And if you're
Starting point is 00:13:28 scared, go to church or go back to Arizona, either way. But so it sucks that JJ won't be there. And it also is disappointing that it's only going to be one day of joint practices. But again, it doesn't mean that the Titans won't get in some quality work. And what I want to do is I want to point out some areas of strength on the Cardinals roster that I think can really help the Tennessee Titans get some good work. And unfortunately, I don't really think the Cardinals have a very good roster personally.
Starting point is 00:14:02 I don't. And if there was a team that was pretty good last year that we could see taking a step back, I think it's Arizona. But they do have some spots on the roster that are pretty solid. The offense overall for Arizona is pretty good. You look at Marquise
Starting point is 00:14:17 Brown, DeAndre Hopkins, although he's going to be suspended, is practicing. Rondell Moore, I believe they still have A.J. Green around. So their top four wide receivers are pretty solid, pretty solid. And that'll be good work for the Titans cornerbacks. Yeah, I'm not worried about Christian Fulton, but everybody else, and I mean Christian Fulton included, but I'm just not worried about him. Everybody else is super young. Caleb Farley, Roger McCreary, Elijah Molden getting back out there. He needs some good work after missing a ton of weeks with injury.
Starting point is 00:14:48 I think that the wide receiver group, and here's the thing, they have A.J. Green, who's kind of that tall, lanky guy. They have a guy like Marquise Brown and Rondell Moore, who are both smaller, fast guys. DeAndre Hopkins, another big-bodied guy who wins with physicality. So they're going to give you a couple of different types of wide receivers to play against, and Andy Isabella, who's kind of like a crappier version of Kyle Phillips.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Anyways, I think that the wide receiver group of Arizona will give the Titans' defensive backfield a good test, especially if you think about Zach Ertz, Trey McBride, Max Williams. I think these guys will give the Titans linebackers and safeties a good look. Think Elijah Molden just getting back in the fold. Theo Jackson just getting back in the fold.
Starting point is 00:15:41 Also, the new additions, Adrian Colbert, Tyree Gipps, Gillespie, Lonnie Johnson. These guys are really going to make their way onto the roster by proving that they can cover. Okay? So having a pretty good group of pass catchers in Arizona at tight end and at wide receiver, I like that. I like that. A pretty good offensive line with Calvin Beachum and Will Hernandez and Rodney Hudson and Justin Pugh and DJ Humphreys. That's a pretty solid group as well. And then, of course, you have Kyler Murray and James Conner.
Starting point is 00:16:17 That's a nice backfield. So, to me, Arizona has a pretty good offense, which would be good for the Titans Titans defense to really get tuned up. But specifically, I like Arizona's pass catchers on offense, and I think that'll give a good test to the Titans secondary who hasn't really
Starting point is 00:16:35 I guess with all the in and out and injuries, they haven't really been able to be the group that they are and get the looks that they need to get. So I'm excited for the Titans secondary and linebackers to go up against that group. Also on defense for Arizona, I like the safety group. I got to tell you, outside of that, Isaiah Simmons, Zayven Collins at linebacker, they're pretty solid, but Arizona was strongly in the mix to try to trade for Roquan Smith,
Starting point is 00:17:08 so clearly they aren't getting the job done entirely. Marcus Golden, pretty solid edge rusher, but with no J.J. Watt, I'm not really that excited about the Titans offensive line getting work against the front seven. I don't think, you know, obviously it's going to be good work. It's an NFL team. But, you know, you look at teams like Tampa Bay or a team like they played in the first preseason game, Baltimore,
Starting point is 00:17:35 with what they got up front, it's just not the same. But that safety group, Buda Baker is excellent. Jalen Thompson is even pretty good. Deontay Thompson, pretty solid. But I got to be honest with you here. Outside of Byron Murphy, Marco Wilson, Antonio Hamilton, I mean, this may be the worst group of cornerbacks in the entire NFL. And I really like a good set of cornerbacks
Starting point is 00:18:00 to test this Titans wide receiver group right now. That's what I want to see. And then a good defensive line to test this offensive line. Unfortunately, you're not necessarily going to get that with the Arizona Cardinals. So it is what it is. It's good work either way. It's going to be one day, but I guess there are other teams out there I'd rather the Titans go against, but heck, get that revenge, Titans. That beatdown really still leaves a nasty taste in your mouth. But those are the things that I'm looking forward to in joint practices, the matchup that I'm actually going to be watching for. Again, I think there are better matchups that
Starting point is 00:18:41 can help the Titans more than Arizona. But anyway, they're here. And hopefully the Titans can get some revenge in that singular joint practice. The Titans will practice on their own on Thursday, off day Friday, and then the final preseason game of the year on Saturday night. But now we got to talk about something I am really, really excited about. And that is the return of the Locked on Titans Fantasy Football League. You have a chance to enter, and the winner of the league will join me for an entire episode next offseason.

Starting point is 00:20:57 for nonstop Tennessee Titans content, and I'm just going to take a little break from the content churn right now to tell you guys about something I'm excited about. It's the Locked On Titans Fantasy Football League. So in 2020, I did a Fantasy Football League. I had 11 listeners in the league with me. Kevin Schesventer, KSESH, what's up, man?
Starting point is 00:21:19 Won the first ever iteration of the league. And the following offseason, he joined me for a full episode of the podcast. Now, at the time, I was only an audio podcast. But now with the YouTube show, your face is going to be live with me for a full show if you win. Now, coincidentally, I got last in that league that year. I had a ton of injuries. I had Christian McCaffrey. Man, how can you draft CMC in the first round this year logically?
Starting point is 00:21:49 How can you do it as a God-fearing man in this economy? But anyways, let's dive into it right now. So I'm going to have 11 people in the Fantasy Football League, 11 listeners. How do you enter? Simple as this. Right now, on the YouTube channel, I am putting up our current sponsors.
Starting point is 00:22:14 We have the Dave app. We have LinkedIn, the sponsor of today's show. You can go post your job for free at linkedin.com slash locked on NFL. I would say the most economical way, the easiest way to get in the league is with Built Bar. The best tasting protein bars in the galaxy that taste like a candy bar. Go to built.com right now. Use the promo code

Starting point is 00:23:53 I don't know if you can do that. But if you can, you could post a picture of you signing up for one of these. Guys, I can't just make it the first 11 people enter. That's just not fair. I want you to support the network and support the show a little bit.
Starting point is 00:24:09 And in return, you're in the league. So it's officially out there. I am taking DMs on Twitter. I'm taking messages on Facebook. At Tic Tac Titans on Twitter. At Locked On Titans Pod on Facebook. Send me a screenshot of you taking advantage of one of these offers from our sponsors, and you'll get automatic entry into the league.
Starting point is 00:24:31 Now, I'm going to tell you guys this now. It is time-sensitive. It is time-sensitive, okay? Because the first 11 people that send this to me are the 11 people who were in. Now, for some other details, the league will be carried out on ESPN. Also, I will create a Twitter DM
Starting point is 00:24:53 with all the people from the league in it. If you don't have Twitter, one, what are you doing? Two, sign up just so you can get in the DMs if you are in the league. But yeah, it's going to be on ESPN. We're going to have a group DM to have fun throughout the year.
Starting point is 00:25:15 The draft, the draft will be right now. This is tentatively because I've had a lot of international people join the league. The draft will be tentatively Friday evening on September the 2nd. That is my plan right now. Now, if I get enough people in the league who can't do that, we will find another time, but that is my plan. Again, the winner of the Locked on Titans Fantasy Football League
Starting point is 00:25:44 will get to join me for an entire show next offseason, probably February or March. I can't do it during the season, guys. The content's too important. So there you go. So that's it. Locked on Titans Fantasy Football League. Take advantage of one of the sponsors.
Starting point is 00:26:03 Send me a screenshot. You're in the league. Winner gets to come on the show. Draft on September 2nd, Friday night. So I know this wasn't a segment of Titans content. My apologies. But I wanted to take some time to let you guys know about this. I am going to hold off on getting people into the league until Wednesday morning when the podcast crowd has had a chance to listen. So don't send your screenshot until Wednesday morning when the podcast crowd has had a chance to listen. So don't send your screenshot until Wednesday morning.
Starting point is 00:26:30 But Wednesday morning, the floodgates are open. And then also, this is a good chance to tell you I'm going to be doing a giveaway on Twitter with a Titans book bag, Titans water bottle, some Titans koozies, stuff like that on Saturday night. Get on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:26:44 Join the party. Anyways, there's your info. There's the transactions, Monty Rice. There's joint practice preview for the Arizona Cardinals. I'll be back with you guys tomorrow to break down everything you need to know from Titans joint practice.
Starting point is 00:27:05 Thank you guys for tuning in. As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
