Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans DRAMA FEST at Rookie Camp as Carnell Tate SITS & Brian Daboll HYPES Cam Ward
Episode Date: May 3, 2026Tennessee Titans rookie mini-camp took place over the weekend and like always there was drama. First, Robert Saleh decided not to have the draft class, including Carnell Tate, participate due to healt...h concerns. This was criticized by some, but this is a perfectly fine decision that has the player's best interest in mind. Not only that, but focusing on the tryout players makes much more sense. Second, the Titans ran a special teams drill that drew ire from national media, but it shows a lack of understanding of what this camp, and football for that matter, are all about. Titans coordinators spoke over the weekend, including Brian Daboll, and he spoke about Cam Ward and how impressive he has been in a short time so far. Daboll also broke down Tate's skillset and the interior offensive line battle. Gus Bradley also spoke with media and hyped up second-year corner Marcus Harris as a nickel option after Saleh did so the day before. The Tennessee Titans had their rookie minicamp this weekend, and of course, there was drama.
But I'll tell you why once again, the media is getting it wrong with the Titans on today's edition of Locked On Titans.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland Titans fans.
Today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast
is brought to you by Fandle.
Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $150 and bonus bets
if your first bet wins had to Fandle.com to get started.
On today's show, I am going to recap everything.
You need to know from Tennessee Titans rookie minicamp.
We'll talk about what Gus Bradley and Robert Sala
had to say about Marcus Harris at Nickel.
Also, Brian Dable talked about Cam Ward,
Carnel Tate, but we'll start with all of the drama coming out of Tennessee
Titans rookie minicamp and it all started on Friday.
When Robert Sala announced that the Titans draft class,
the actual drafted eight players that the Titans selected last weekend,
will not participate in the rookie mini camp event over the weekend.
And of course, the media ran with that, different fans ran with that,
people performative outrage, everything that you see anytime anything like this happens.
Oh, Robert Sala, you know, the Jets people, he didn't learn anything from his time with the New York Jets.
Oh, the veteran players, the veteran players will be mad about this.
How dare they not make the rookies go out there and earn it?
Bup, but, but, but, but fans, oh, the rookies won't be ready.
Some people who just want pictures and things like that don't care about the health of the players.
but again, everyone is missing the mark on this.
Robert Sala has it 100% correct here.
Look, if a coach wanted the rookies to participate in rookie minicamp
like the Titans have had the last however long,
that's not a problem.
But that doesn't mean that I have a problem with Robert Sala's approach
of not letting the rookies participate,
and his reasoning for it makes a ton of sense.
It's about the health and safety of these players.
most important rookies at the end of the day.
They have been doing combine-related testing,
not football testing, not football practice,
but working on three cones and agility drills
and 40-yard dashes and bench presses and combine interviews.
And they have been doing the draft process prep the entire time.
And Robert Sal is saying,
I do not believe that their bodies are ready for a full-out
football mini camp. I don't believe that. Again, they've been focusing on all these other things
that have kept them from being in the shape that they would typically be in to play football.
So what we aren't going to do is go out there and make Cornell Tate pull a hammy running routes
when he hasn't been working on that stuff for months. When he's been flying all around the
country doing 30 visits, draft interviews, media appearances, all these different things that
come with the draft cycle.
So I have
0% of an issue
with Robert Sala holding back
the drafted rookies to look
out for their health, look out for the
well-being. It's not like he's going to sit
the rookies until training
camp. They literally said that
when the, you know, rookies join
the veterans next week,
they'll be there.
Like they want to get them up to speed
and it's not like they were doing nothing
either. We saw
some of the rookies out on the field,
getting videos and pictures of them being out there.
Cornell Tate was catching some passes on the field.
He's not running routes and this and that,
but they went through warm-ups,
the stretching period.
They're just not going to do all the drill work.
And if you look at the drills that the Titans were doing during the week,
it makes sense that you wouldn't have your drafted rookies
involved with some of the things that were happening.
But again, just the performative outrage,
finding something to be mad about,
creating drama.
out of something that really is drama less.
60 undrafted free agent rookies
were there to try out in front of the coaching staff.
Why does the Titans' number one pick
have to be involved in that or it's a bad thing?
Or the veteran players are going to be mad.
Or they're soft.
They're not going to be ready for the season.
What, for two days?
At the end of April?
Was it May?
Was it May already?
Yeah, it was May already?
Two days.
I just think it's insane, especially when the reasoning behind it
is health and safety for these draft picks.
How angry would you be
if today's show was Carnell Tate hurt his hamstring at rookie minicamp?
Is that worth it?
They're not playing with Cam Ward.
They're not playing with the O-line.
Jeffrey Simmons ain't out there for Keldrick folk to learn from.
They're playing with a bunch of dudes who will not be in the NFL.
You want Carnell Tate to go out there
so you can see videos and pictures
or so that the veterans aren't mad
or for what?
Again, would I be angry if he played them?
No.
But I'm not going to be angry
that Robert Sala is taking a different approach
that again is based on his previous experience
with health and safety of players
because he said when he was in Jacksonville
in the 2000 and teens,
I think it was 2015 maybe,
Dante Fowler
was the number three pick in the draft,
and he tore his ACL at rookie minicamp.
So Robert Sala doesn't push the drafted rookies too hard.
And outside, if that isn't a good enough reason for you,
which I think is insane,
that is plenty of a good enough reason
to be happy with Robert Sala's approach here.
If that wasn't a good enough reason for you, though,
how about this?
And more drama, more drama.
The Titans were doing drills, all right?
and Bones Fossil who everybody in the NFL, media, fans, everybody.
Everybody says that Bones Fossil is the best special teams coach in the world.
Maybe one of the best special teams coaches in the history of this football league.
And yet, you had numerous people criticizing the Titans for a drill that they were running,
where guys start on the ground.
They get up, they run through some bags,
they do an agility ladder,
they dip around some stand-up tackling dummies.
They run to the finish line and finish
and they try to pick up a tennis ball.
The coach bounces at them and they try to pick it up.
And everybody is saying,
oh, this drill is stupid.
There's no rep in football this long.
Why are they doing this, blah, blah, this and that?
And you're all idiots.
You're morons.
Who don't know football.
And don't understand coaching.
Shut up.
You don't know what you're talking about.
You know who does?
Bones Fossil.
The best special teams coach in the NFL.
So a couple of different things, and this all ties together.
That's a special teams drill.
That's why the drill is so long.
No, a wide receiver or a tight end or a cornerback.
The rep isn't going to be that long.
But they're working on special teams
because these are undrafted free agents.
These are rookie tryout players who don't have a contract.
These guys have to play special teams.
And you know what is a long rep?
Kickoff coverage.
Punt coverage.
Those are long reps.
And outside of, oh, is this simulating,
they're testing the players want to.
How do you compete in the drill?
Do you go hard?
How do you move through the bags?
Are you a smooth mover? Are you fluid?
Do you compete? Do you hustle?
Do you take coaching?
When the coach stops you and says,
hey, you need to do this as you're going through that.
Do you roll your eyes and not listen?
Or do you take the coaching?
The drill isn't about scheme.
They aren't trying to find elite wide receivers and running backs.
Those guys get drafted.
They're trying to find guys who are going to hustle.
Take coaching.
Work hard.
compete, go through the drill, maybe play on special teams and use that as a way to get into the NFL.
People just, just people do not understand football.
And everybody wants to make a joke and get their likes on Twitter and get the interactions that they want.
Oh, look, the Titans are dumb.
Titans aren't playing their drafted rookies.
Titans are doing a stupid drill.
Titans are, blah, blah, oh, the media, the Titans media is all angry now because they have to
stay back a certain amount because they're building a stadium and there's health and safety
restrictions and but but like it's all just nonsensical drama and in my opinion and look I create
content and right now as we speak I am benefiting from the drama that was created by other people
because now I can give my opinion on the nonsensical drama but again I can't help it I am a
Tennessee Titans fan that is tired of seeing the Titans get disrespected
by stupid people.
No, Robert Sala isn't an idiot
for protecting his drafted players.
He would know.
No, Bones Fossil is not an idiot
for the drill that he used during the weekend.
He may know what he's talking about.
And maybe you don't understand
what the end goal of the drill is.
And the media restrictions,
the Titans are the mafia
in the NFL when it comes,
the media restrictions.
The Titans are the most media restricted team
in the entire NFL period.
So I'm not shocked by that.
Do I like it?
No, but I'm not shocked.
We're not going to waste a question
at the press conference asking the coach
about safety construction media restrictions
when we should be talking about football.
And shout out to Tehran Davenport,
who continues to be the best beat reporter
that the Titans have ever had
asking real football questions.
And you guys want to talk about the
real football because
Brian Dable had a lot to say
about Cam Ward, Cornell Tate
and that interior offensive line.
Do want to let you guys know
that today's episode is brought to you

Let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about all the nonsensical drama
and why it's so off base for the Titans rookie minicap.
But now let's talk about the actual football.
Let's talk about real football in that discussion.
Before I do that, I want to thank you guys again for making Locked on Titans,
your first listen each and every day.
Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round,
always for free.
Make sure that you get subscribed, stay subscribed.
It's your team every day.
Speaking of every day, shout it to my everydayers out there.
Tuning in Monday through Friday.
Couldn't do it without you guys.
If you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one.
With that being said, though,
Xavier Restrepo participated in the rookie mini camp.
Now, there was more drama about that.
Should a second-year player be allowed in rookie minicamp?
The Titans are trying to find the best football players.
They could put a 10-year veteran out there.
And quite frankly, we have seen veterans participate in rookie minicamp forever in the NFL.
This is not some controversy.
This is not some new thing.
Chase Claypool.
Yes, that Chase Claypool that hasn't been in the NFL since 2023,
he participated in the rookie minicamp for the Green Bay Packers this weekend.
Chase Claypool.
So Xavier Restrepo, an undrafted free agent practice squad player
going into year two, is 100% in his rights and logical to be at rookie minicamp.
Again, just people don't quite understand what the real motivation for the coaching staff is here.
Like, this is not training camp or mandatory mini camp for the 90-man roster.
This is a rookie tryout.
Now, I will tell you this,
Xavier Restrepo being there,
not a good sign for him.
Like, if they're like, hey,
we're not certain that you're better
than these guys at our rookie tri-out.
We want to see you
compared to these other rookies
to see how you look.
That's not a good sign for X.
That is, we don't think that
we aren't certain
that you're good enough to make the 90-man
roster. That's what they're telling Xavier Ostrepo. That's what they're telling us
is we don't know that you should even be on the 90. That's why you're at rookie
mini-camp tryouts with 60 dudes who aren't going to be in the NFL.
Are you better than Tyron Montgomery? Are you better than Hank Beattie? Are you better
than James Rex Steiner? Big Papa Pump, son.
That's what they're trying to find out. Now with that being said, though,
Jim Wyatt from Tennessee Titans.com when he did his observations,
he said both days, day one and day two,
Xavier Strepo was active, making plays all over the field.
So you could say, well, he's a second-year player,
they're all rookies, this and that.
But the point was,
the Titans want to see just how much better you are than all of these rookies.
And Xavier Estrepo proved that he is much better than those rookies
based on what we heard from the observations.
Tyrone Montgomery,
another guy who I found very, very interesting.
At wide receiver is an undrafted free agent.
He got a lot of flack for the drill I was talking about
that Bones Fossil had the guys going through
with the bags and the dip in the bend
and the speed and the tennis ball
and the agility ladder and all that.
Tyrone Montgomery, boy, he looked,
I don't want to downplay him as an athlete.
I mean, Tyrone Montgomery was, as been a better athlete than I could ever dream of being.
I never even, in my wildest dreams, never dreamed of being as good of an athlete as Tyron Montgomery is.
So take that for what it's worth.
But his arm was like flailing around.
He did not look excessively coordinated.
I will tell you that.
He was fast.
He was quick.
But he didn't look excessively coordinated.
One of his arms was like wiggling up.
Like it's just a lot of wasted movement.
As a track kid, I ran track.
Sprinters, baby, realized, let's go.
But as a track kid, I look, and I'm like, oh my God,
like you're taught to have such minimal movement in track
to restrict, you know, air friction and all this other stuff,
like minimal wasted movement.
He had so much wasted movement.
But, again, Jim White's observation said he made a big high point touchdown catch.
Also had a drop, though, was inconsistent.
Guys, I've got to tell you the honest truth.
Tyron Montgomery is 25 years old.
Shouldn't be having inconsistency.
Now, I know that he didn't play football until he was later in life,
and that's part of the conversation around Tyron Montgomery.
But at the end of the day,
that may be why you're far behind,
but you're 25 years old and you're far behind in your development.
NFL teams just aren't.
By the time you develop Ty Montgomery into something,
it'll be 27, 28.
why not develop someone who's 21 or 22.
You see what I mean?
Like, it's that like, yeah,
maybe we could develop you into something,
but when?
What will be the return on investment if we do?
You're better off working with a younger guy.
That's just the truth of the NFL right there.
That is it.
Why would I develop this 25-year-old
when I could develop a 21-year-old?
if neither of them are that great of players,
then what are we doing here?
So that's the conversation.
Now, the other guy I want to mention here
is Emil Wagner,
the offensive tackle out of Notre Dame,
who I think has a pretty good shot in a lot of videos.
And I think Jim White mentioned this as well,
talked about him getting extensive
individual working with Carmen Bracillo,
the Tennessee Titans offensive line coach.
And I think the reason for that is,
I think Emil Wagner could be a guy that takes Brendan Crenshaw-Dixon's spot
as the development offensive tackle.
Like, I think that Emil Wagner could get that.
Because whether we like it or not, and I don't like it.
Austin Declis will probably be the swing tackle,
or Brendan Crenshaw-Dixon or Emil Wagner will beat him out for that spot.
But in my mind, Austin Declis is,
is the next rung up.
Right now, it's Brendan Crenshaw Dixon
against Amil Wagner
for the low-level roster offensive tackle
that we want to develop.
And if one of those guys does well enough
in the coming months,
then he could potentially beat out Austin Declis.
But if you're looking at the Mortal Kombat roster battle,
it's Emil Wagner and Brendan Crenshaw-Dixon
against each other right now.
Now again, those are the guys that were out on the field.
Bishop Fitzgerald, the safety out of USC,
who I'm very interested in.
Him and Tyron Montgomery
got some love from Bones Fossil
for the way that they competed in the drill
in the Bones Fossil
Mic'd Up video, which I encourage you guys to watch
on Tennessee Titans' YouTube channel,
but Bones Fossil was miced up
and he gave some praise to Bishop Fitzgerald
and to Tyron Montgomery
for the way that they went through the drill.
Said they were moving well and all of that.
So those are two guys that we definitely should have our eye on moving forward.
But we talk all offense guys.
I had to mention Bishop Fitzgerald, who I'm pretty high on.
Now, Brian Dable talked about Cam Ward.
He said Cam is a young professional.
He wants to be great.
Good at communicating about what he's seeing on tape.
Picks things up quickly.
Has a good relationship with him.
Thankful that he gets to work with Cam Ward.
after the relationship he built with him last draft cycle
when he was with the Giants.
So loved hearing that.
He talked about Carnell Tate.
He said Carnell Tate has to earn it,
but he's mature, good and contested,
good route runner, good body quickness,
said they'll give him as much as he can handle.
They want all the wide receivers to learn all the different spots.
I found those comments very interesting.
We may dive more into the comments from the coach,
staff, Robert Sala, Brian Dable,
but I wanted to make sure I mentioned some of these
big time quotes. Again, I feel like
I might take some time to dive more
into them because there's so much meat on the bone
with what Brian Dable
and Gus Bradley and
Robert Sala had to say over the weekend
outside of the football that actually took place.
But I loved hearing
him talk about Cornell Tate like that.
He mentioned the interior offensive line
and I hated his answer. He said
it's going to sort itself out
in the months
he's like right now
you know
we're just trying to get accustomed
to the guys
learn the guys
blah blah
but you know
there's veterans
there's young guys
they're all going to
compete
it's going to sort itself out
okay
well
that's like saying to me
I have $500
I have $1,000
worth of bills
and when you ask me
how I'm going to do my budget
I say oh well
it'll sort itself out
yeah you'll pay a couple
your bills and then not have money for the rest.
Yeah, the O line will sort itself out.
Yeah, you'll be using some bombs
as starters on the offensive line.
So, of course, it's going to sort itself out.
To me, it was such a silly response
and I'm sure that, you know,
Brian Dable doesn't want to say anything too much of value,
you know, coach speak.
He just wants to get through the interview
without causing any problems.
But like,
DUD's going to sort itself out.
has to. You have to have a starting offensive line. The problem is, is how good is it going to be
when it sorts itself out? Is it going to be okay when it sorts itself out? And my answer right now is
no. So, oh, he said it's going to sort itself out. What else are he going to say? Yeah, our
offensive line is terrible. We botched the offseason in that regard. I don't have a good
plan going forward to how we're going to make this work.
He's not going to say that.
So, oh, it'll sort itself out.
Somebody will establish themselves.
Someone will win the battle.
Yeah, it doesn't mean it'll be someone good.
So my concerns about the interior offensive line
and the offensive line in general
still at max capacity at this time.
Give me Kevin Zeitler and I'll feel better.
All right, I'll feel better.
But with that being said,
we got to talk a little bit about defense
because Robert Sala and Gus Bradley continue to hype up Marcus Harris
as the starting slot cornerback.
Do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by Fan Dual Sportsbook.

And let's cap off today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast.
Again, breaking down everything you need to know from rookie minicamp.
We talked about all the drama that was with the Titans all weekend that I think is stupid.
We talked about some guys who stood out on the actual field,
some things that Brian Dable had to say about the offense.
Now I want to talk about what Robert Sala and Gus Bradley had to say about the defense.
particularly Marcus Harris at slot cornerback.
Before I do though, I do want to thank you again for making Locked on Titans.

Now, with that being said, again, the Titans keep hyping up
Marcus Harris as the nickelback.
And quite honestly, they don't even need to.
Isn't that the expectation?
Right now, as things stand,
if you had to put together a Titan starting defense,
wouldn't Marcus Harris be the starting slot cornerback anyways?
Now, I think that the Titans could use some big nickel
with Kevin Winston as a safety.
But if you're just like, hey, who's the Titan starting slot cornerback?
It's, we always said it was Marcus Harris.
So Robert Salah is talking about the cornerback position
and that nickel back spot.
And he says, don't sleep on Marcus Harris.
called him a bigger-bodied option in there,
which we'll get to that in a second.
I don't get it.
But Robert Sala says, hey,
don't sleep on Marcus Harris
and brings him up unprompted.
And then we get to day two.
And Gus Bradley starts talking about
Marcus Harris.
Big-bodied guy,
willing to be physical.
I think he could impress people.
We liked what we saw.
All right.
Let's break that down.
Marcus Harris always made sense as the starting nickel cornerback.
Again, it's been the expectation all along.
Outside of the injury, he had a pretty good rookie season.
Some of the advanced analytics on Marcus Harris, separation prevented, things like that,
looks very good.
I think that Marcus Harris is going to be awesome in coverage.
The problem is, I do not think,
that Marcus Harris can be the
every down nickel.
I don't think that he's physical enough against the run.
He's not big enough either.
That's one thing that perplexed me
and I even tweeted it out
and everybody got mad and, you know, this and that,
blah, blah, blah.
But Robert Salah
and Gus Bradley both called Marcus Harris
a bigger-bodied nickel.
No, he isn't.
He's 5'11,
190 pounds.
He's not a bigger body nickel.
Roger McCreery was 511, 190 pounds.
Has anybody ever called Roger McCreery a bigger nickel?
No, because he isn't.
Nick Eamonwary at 6 foot 3, 220 pounds is a big nickel.
Caleb Downs at 6 foot 200 is a big nickel.
Jalen Petrie
At 6 foot, 200 is a big nickel.
Like, I, I, I, I'm not saying that Marcus Harris can't be the nickel.
And I'm not saying that it's impossible for Marcus Harris to be the every down nickel.
But Gus Bradley even said, yeah, we're going to see how it looks and we've used
safeties in the big nickel package before.
Marcus Harris is not a big body nickel.
Now he's not a small nickel back.
There are nickels out there who are 5 foot 8, 185, 5 foot 9, 190.
Yeah, he's 5 foot 11 190.
He's a little bit taller than them, a little bit longer than them.
But acting like he's a big nickel in today's NFL.
Now, Robert Sala has used some small,
guys at nickel back before.
So maybe he's a bigger
nickel for
Sala, but he's
not a big nickel by NFL
standards. This is like the same
dude that said Cedric Gray is going to play
Sam. Been arguing with me
about it. Like, brother,
come on. What are we
doing here? I just
I don't get it. So
Marcus Harris getting hype
and he should get hype. He should be
the starting slot cornerback right now.
but he's not a big slot cornerback
by any measure in the NFL.
There's no way you could say,
if you want to come to me and say
he's an average size nickel.
He's not small,
he's an average size nickel.
Okay, all right, okay,
I'll concede that.
511, 190.
Let's say he added
five pounds of muscle.
You know, he's 511, 195,
longer arms for a guy his size.
Okay, he's an average size nickel.
Not small.
He's not big either.
So it just, I don't know.
It's grinding my gears that they keep saying that.
But whatever.
If that's how they feel, great.
I hope Marcus Harris does awesome.
Again, he's been expected to be the starter all along.
Gus Bradley talked about how they view linebacker
and how the mic and the will need to have similar skill sets
and whoever is the best communicator out of those
will end up being the Mike green dot linebacker.
So the skill set for Will and Mike doesn't have to be that different.
That's important information for us to know.
Also, he talked about how Anthony Hill
could be similar to Bobby Wagner
and they have similar builds.
Now, he didn't bring up the comparison
someone in the media did, but he didn't shoot it down either.
So I think that that is interesting to note
is that Gus Bradley sees some similarities there as well.
But again, there is so much.
When I was making my notes for this show,
I had to leave so much on the cutting room floor
because of all the different things that were said by the coaches
over the weekend.
We'll probably dive more into that throughout the week
and I'm going to do my initial 53-man roster.
And the rookies join up with the veterans next weekend.
We're going to be talking about that later in the week as well.
So much content coming your way.
So much to discuss here.
