Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans FINALLY CUT L'Jarius Sneed & MAJOR Salary Cap BOOST from Mysterious Insurance Claim
Episode Date: March 13, 2026The Tennessee Titans finally cut cornerback L'Jarius Sneed on Friday in a move many fans have been waiting on. It will save the team nearly $12 million in additional salary cap space and will leave be...hind $8 million in dead cap. Regardless of the finances, as the Titans move to a new system and a new era, it was best to leave Sneed in the dust as one of the worst acquisitions in franchise history. While the Titans while gain cap space from the Sneed cut, they also got a mysterious $20 million in additional cap relief due to a supposed insurance policy that were able to make claim on. Apparently, this is a function of the CBA and has been something that is in place for quite some time. The Titans allegedly will benefit from the injury absences of Sneed and Calvin Ridley, adding to their robust cap situation. Finally, the Titans could create more cap space from a Ridley cut, along with cuts of Tony Pollard and Cody Barton, but these are becoming less likely by the day as the Titans have not added any depth at those spots at this time. The Tennessee Titans finally cut Legerius Sneed, but cutting Sneed wasn't the only way that he gave the Titans more cap space on Friday.
I'll explain on today's edition of Locked on Titans.

On today's show, we're going to talk about the cut of Ligeria Sneed,
which finally happened and just how much money it's going to save the Tennessee Titans and salary cap,
But Legerius Sneed getting cut isn't the only way that he gave the Titans more cap room.
There's a mysterious insurance claim the Titans were able to make that gave them a lot more space.
I'm gonna break that down, tell you how much money the Tennessee Titans have to play with,
talk about what cuts could come next, and what signings the Titans should be targeting with all their new found money.
Before we dive in, do want to thank you for making Locked on Titans, your first listen each and every day.

Speaking of every day, shout out to my everydayers out there.
Tune in Monday through Friday.
Couldn't do it without you guys.
If you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one, there are going to be more moves to make for the Tennessee Titans over the next couple of weeks.
The draft is right around the corner.
Make sure that you stay locked in with the number one Tennessee Titans podcast in the world.
Locked on Titans.
But with that being said, yes.
The move has finally been made that everyone has been waiting on.
Ligeria Sneed was cut by the Tennessee Titans
and it will save the Tennessee Titans $12 million in cap space.
Ligeria Sneed will also come with $8 million of dead money.
But Sianara, this move needed to happen,
not only because the Tennessee Titans can save $12 million in cap space here,
But because it is a new era for the Tennessee Titans and it's fitting in my opinion that coming off a
celebration of the Tennessee Titans new brand new era New jerseys new logo all of that brand newness that they get rid of some of the cancer and cut some of the cancer out and that's exactly what Ligerius Sneed was
over his career with the Tennessee Titans two seasons he played in 12 games
he had zero interceptions only three pass breakups only 49 tackles and
And he had more legal issues than he actually had interceptions during his two years in Tennessee.
I mean, one of the worst.
It's definitely not the worst.
Trading A.J. Brown, drafting Isaiah Wilson.
Those are definitely worse moves than the trade for legurious need.
But it is certainly in the top 10 and most likely in the top 5 of the worst transactions and acquisitions
did the Tennessee Titans have ever made as a franchise.
Now, we can go back pretty far to find a lot of mistakes.
Quite frankly, there are a lot of mistakes in Tennessee Titans history and there are a lot of mistakes in most teams history
These moves are hard. They don't always work out, but without a doubt
Lagerius Need is one of the worst moves the Titans have ever made in the history of the franchise
Now, here's the reality though
Not only will Lagerius Needs save the Titans 12 million dollars in salary cash. It's 11.8 to be exact, but it's much more easy to have a round figure for you guys
to understand and digest. But he's also going to give the Tennessee Titans
additional cap space basically 20 million dollars.
Now he didn't do it on its own. Calvin Ridley is involved in that number
and it's a bit mysterious, I'm gonna break it down.
But the injury situation is why it took so long for Legerius need to get cut.
They had a injury and this was just a terrible decision by Rancarthon
when he put this in the contract but they basically had an injury guarantee
where if Ligerius Sneed could not pass a physical
and he was cut because he could not pass a physical,
he was guaranteed to make $7.8 million.
The Titans had to pay him that in cash.
So Ligerius Sneed passing is physical
and being cut normally means he doesn't get that.
Now that wouldn't affect the Titans' cap space,
it wouldn't have taken away.
It just would have been $8 million that the Titans organization
would have had to pay Ligeria Sneed
that they didn't want to pay.
So that's what took so long, but that guarantee kicked in on March the 15th.
So the Titans had to get this figured out by Sunday and they have now apparently he passed the physical.
The Titans release him like normal $12 million.
But this insurance money, this popped up on my radar on Friday afternoon and I will tell you
if you have never heard of what I'm about to talk about, don't be worried because I have never heard of it either.
I had no idea that this was going on and there's a reason
the NFL does not want people to know that this is going on
so apparently in 2006
in the CBA the collective bargaining agreement
between the teams and the players association
a clause was put in where teams can put an insurance policy
on their players
and if that player misses a significant amount of time
the team can not only get back money,
but that can be put into cap space as well.
Now, not every team does it.
There's a big article on how this works.
I believe the woman that wrote the article
is now going to be the head of the NFL Players Association.
Her name's like Kalin Kaler or something like that.
An article in ESPN in 2004 that was shared by my guy,
Zach Lyons, who does the afternoon show for 104-5, I think,
podcast. Zach does great financial work.
But he posted the article and again, this is something that I learned about today.
But apparently a team could put a one or two million dollar
insurance payment on a player
and if they miss a significant amount of the season,
again, you get the cash back
and you get salary cap relief from that.
So what has happened essentially is Vin Marino,
who is the Tennessee Titan salary cap guru and finance guy,
and Chad Brinker, who is involved in all that behind the scene stuff business-wise,
they put a $1 to $2 million insurance payment
on Ligerius Sneed and Calvin Ridley,
who were their two biggest salary cap hits.
And because Ligarius Sneed and Calvin Ridley missed the majority of the season,
the Titans are going to get $20 million dollars.
back that not only they get back in real money, but goes towards their salary cap space.
The NFL does not want people talking about this, knowing about this.
This is something that they don't like.
But apparently there are a lot of teams out there that do this and it's most
quarterbacks.
It's most common with the players that cost you the most,
you're not going to put a $1 to $2 million insurance policy on a guy who makes $5 million per year.
that's not worth it.
That's not worth the risk
because again, like any insurance,
there's a chance you never make that policy back.
You could pay life insurance
or maybe that's not a good example.
You could pay car insurance
your whole life and never get in a wreck
and you just threw that money away
because you never had to claim on it.
But that's the way the insurance works right.
If you do need it, it's nice to have it.
So it's a calculated risk
any time that you do non-legally obligated insurance.
And that's why teams only do it on their highest paid players.
Because if you put an insurance policy on, you know,
you put a $1 million insurance policy on a $4 million a year player,
even if you get the money back.
Was it worth the risk?
Probably not.
But when you're paying Legerius Sneed $20 million and Calvin Ridley,
$25 million and they miss nearly all of the season,
that was worth it.
So not only are the Titans saving $12 million
because they cut Legerius Sneed
but they're getting $20 million in salary cap space back
because Ligerius Sneed and Calvin Ridley missed most of the season.
Isn't that nuts?
Isn't that?
And we learned that together today.
I did not know that that was a thing.
I had no idea.
I did not see the article in 2024.
The Titans had been a team that had not
previously taking that risk and done that before, but they did that last year.
Brilliant by Chad Brinker and Vin Marino.
Absolutely fantastic work by the people in charge of the finances for the Tennessee Titans.
So, hey, Ligeria Steed is gone.
Good riddance.
See you later.
They get 12 million for that.
They get 20 million an extra cap relief for the insurance policy.
But how much cap space do the Titans actually.
have right now. There's a lot of numbers out there and a lot of confusion and I'm going to clear it up.

cap space the Tennessee Titans have as we leave the first week of free agency.

But how much money do the Tennessee Titans actually have at this time?
Well, there's a lot of confusion.
And if you go to the good websites, Spotrack, Spot track, Spot track, Spot rack, I don't know
how it's pronounced, but it's SPO, T, R, C. That's my favorite site.
Over the Cap is another very good site that monitors salary cap in the NFL.
It has every player listed, the breakdowns, the cap hits, the cost, all that stuff.
If you're really a diehard Titans fan, you're on those kind of websites looking at the salary cap stuff.
But if not, you could be a diehard and just get that information for me as well.
And I am here to tell you that right now when you go on those websites,
it says that the Titans have about $50 million in cap space.
And then logically you would think, oh, you add legurious need, you add the insurance money.
They might be near $80 million in cap right now.
They can go do this, that, the third, but it's not quite that simple.
So let's start from here.
Right now, those websites say that the Tennessee Titans have $50 million in cap space.
Over the cap has 49.
Spotrack has 50.
It's basically the same.
But what you have to take into account is,
John Franklin Myers
Jacob Martin
Jordan Elliott
Josh Williams
Tony Adams
Malique Herring
Jerich Reed
Kyler Granson
Austin Schlotman
Shlopman
apparently I don't know man
we'll figure it out as we go
but all of those names
that I just listed
we don't have their contract information
in terms of their salary cap hit
we don't have the structure
because the way that
contracts work in the NFL. Let's say that I got a $20 million a year contract from the Tennessee
Titans. Okay, or I got a $20 million contract for four years. So $5 million per year.
10 million of that is salary. 10 million of that is signing bonus. The way that it works is
the signing bonus is split up for each year of the contract. So if I got $10 million in signing bonus,
That means that would be split up two and a half million dollars per year.
The salary you can do a little differently.
The Titans could put $1 million of salary in year one
and $9 million of salary in year two
and no salary in year three or year four.
So in year one, I may get $5 million average annual value
the average per year because it's $20 million for four years.
that's $5 million per year
but the Titans could change the contract to where
I get 2.5 in bonus in year one for the salary cap purposes
and then 9 million in salary
and now I'm 11.5 million dollars against the cap
and then the next year I only am owed 1 million in salary
with 2.5 million in bonus
and now I'm only 3.5 million on the cap.
So it's not as simple as saying
John Franklin Myers got a $63 million deal
for three years.
that's $21 million per year, so he's got a $21 million per year cap hit.
That's not how it works.
So we don't know how much money, John Franklin Myers, Jacob, Martin, Jordan Elliott,
Josh Williams, Tony Adams, Malik, Herring, Jerich, Reed, Kyler Granson, Austin Schloteman.
We don't know what their cap hit actually is on the Titan salary cap money.
So without that, all we are due is left to estimate.
And in my opinion, I think that all of those guys together are going to be about 25 to 30 million dollars of salary cap space.
So it may look like the Titans have $50 million in salary cap.
But once all of those contracts actually hit the books and get publicly reported,
the Titans realistically probably have about $25 million in salary cap space right now.
Okay?
So we're really looking at $20 to $25 million of salary cap room that the Titans have at this moment.
But you add in $20 million for the insurance money that we just talked about.
Now the Titans are at $40 to $45 million.
And again, these are all rough estimates.
I can't know for certain.
I'm just trying to give you guys a general idea, an approximate idea of where the Titans are at.
So before you get in my comments in a week and say,
oh, you were off by $3 million.
Shut up.
You know what I mean?
Anyways.
So, the Titans around about 20 to $25 million in cap space.
They add in the $20 million of insurance money,
which gets them back to about $40 to $45 million in cap space.
Okay.
Now, you add in Ligeria Sneed's money,
which is $12 million.
And we're looking at quick math, you know,
$52 to $57 million, but the Tennessee Titans draft class right now as it stands with nine total picks
and where they're slotted, if the Titans move around, it'll change a little bit.
If they do a two for one trade and end up with eight picks instead of nine, it'll change a little bit.
But right now the Titans draft picks are slated to be worth about $18 million.
But you only have to pay the salary cap for the top 51 players until roster cut down day.
So really the Titans draft class is going to cost about $12 million.
So Legerius Sneed saves $12 million.
The draft class costs $12 million.
That cancels out.
So right now, the Titans are looking at, in my opinion, my approximate opinion,
I think the Titans realistically have about 40, 45 to 50 at max,
$40 to $50 million of actual cap space that they can use right now.
Now, one thing that you have to consider is the Titans, like I've told you for weeks now,
if you've been listening to the show, for weeks, I've been telling you,
the Titans are not going to use every cap space dollar that they have before the season.
They always go into the season with 20, 25 million dollars of cap space
because you need to sign players off practice squads to add to your team.
You want to have the potential to make a trade.
You do an extension.
You, you know, do different maneuvers, sign players in summer free agency.
When guys get cut off rosters on roster cut down day in the preseason,
you sign guys there.
You need a little bit of money in the bank.
Shawnee what you think.
You know what I mean?
You need a little bit of money to have some maneuverability during the actual season.
You know, it's like when you go to amusement park.
You pay money to go to the amusement park.
Let's say you go to Disney.
You got to buy your tickets.
You got to buy your hotel.
Maybe you buy a fast pass so that you can cheat on the lines and get to the front of the line and all that.
But you still need a little money in your pocket to buy your kid a Mickey Mouse doll.
or to buy a cup or to buy some food at the food court and stuff,
you can't just spend your whole budget
before you ever walk in the building.
That's not how it works.
So if the Tennessee Titans who rolled over,
and again, salary cap works like rollover minutes in the past.
You can roll over your salary cap from one year to the next.
Now, you can't do all of it.
There's a floor that you have to spend to,
But like John Robinson in year one rolled over 30 some million dollars of salary cap for the Tennessee Titans.
In back-to-back years in his first two years because there was no one to pay.
There was no one to use that money on.
So he rolled over $30 million in back-to-back years.
Mike Borganzi rolled over $18 million of salary cap space from last year to this year that he could use this year.
So the Titans don't want to use all of their salary cap space.
So if they have 40 to 50 million dollars in salary cap,
and we assume that they want to keep 20 million dollars in their pocket,
then realistically speaking,
the Titans have about 20 to 30 million dollars of cap space that they can affect it.
I've seen some people say 22 to 27 that want to drill down a little closer.
Sure.
But it's between 20 and 30 million dollars of actual salary cap space
that the Tennessee Titans could use.
Now, they can improve that.
They could cut Calvin Ridley.
That's $13 million.
They could post June 1st, Calvin Ridley,
which means that he's cut right now and becomes a free agent.
But they don't get the $18 million until June 1st.
But that would allow you to use money now knowing that you're getting $18 million in the future.
So they would have, you know, if we say it's 20, then it's 38.
if we say it's 30, then it's $48 million to play with,
knowing that they're going to get 18 on June the 2nd
if they designate Ridley as a post-June 1st cut.
Tony Pollard is 7 million.
Cody Barton is 4 million.
You cut those two guys.
That's an $11 million additional.
Say you cut Calvin Ridley as a normal cut.
That's 13.
13 plus 11.
Carry the 2.
That's 14.
Or 24.
I'm an athlete, not a athlete.
Get out of my face.
all right. But the Titans could clear up $24 million of salary cap space right now.
And then you add that to their 2030 and they're right back up to, you know, $45, $55 million.
So there are different ways to do it.
But if you want a number to hold on to $20 to $30 million of cap space
is really what the Titans have to work with right now.
If they don't cut Ridley, they don't cut Pollard and they don't cut Barton.
20 to 30 million.
Now, that gives them a lot of office.
opportunities to go out and still sign some decent players who are on the market.
Who could those players be?
Well, I think the number one option for the Titans right now might very well be a former Tennessee
vault.

Fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about Legerius Sneed getting cut.
We talked about the insurance money.
It turned into a financial Friday after.
I thought we might go over some contract structures and stuff like that.
Not all of that is out right now,
but we ended up talking about money somewhere or another.
But with that being said,
we talked about, again, Sneed, the insurance.
The Titans have about 20 to 30 million
in actual salary cap space that they could reasonably spend right now
and still have some money in their pocket without cutting
some of the guys we talked about like Ridley Pollard Barton.
But who could they go after with this money?
Number one on my list at this point,
I was not excited.
I did not want the Tennessee Titans to sign this player.
So before you guys get in my comments and say,
oh, I thought you didn't want him.
I didn't want him to be the guy that they signed at wide receiver.
But now that they have this extra insurance money,
now that they have Wondell Robinson,
now that they have John Franklin Myers,
Alante Taylor, Cordell, Flott,
all these other guys that they've added,
well now everything's a cherry on top at this point.
Go get Joanne Jennings.
Why not?
Why not?
Go get him. Tennessee guy.
Got that dog in him.
He's a big physical receiver.
The Titans don't have a lot of big physical receivers.
Him and Elykeyeh manner can play off of each other and rotate.
I still want them to get a wide receiver early in the draft.
They need to get somebody in round two or round three at wide receiver.
certainly they do. But you get Joanne Jennings, who in my opinion is a good wide receiver 3.
I don't see Joanne Jennings as a 1 or a 2, in my opinion. He's not as good as he looked in San Francisco
because he's not going to have Kyle Shanahan calling plays. And I'm excited about Brian Daible,
but make no mistake about it. Brian Daibble ain't Kyle Shanahan. Okay? Kyle Shanahan's the best
offensive mind in the NFL and one of the best in NFL history, in my opinion. I am
a Kyle Shanahan stand, all right?
But if they keep Ridley, they add Wondale Robinson.
They have Chim D.K.
Three guys who can play in the slot.
DK. and Ridley can play the Z position.
Then you add Juan Jennings with Elyke-Eyeomanner as your two X wide receivers.
Then you can go into the NFL draft and get whatever best value is.
Because right now as things stand, the Titans have to get a big-bodied wide receiver.
They have Wondale Robinson, one of the smallest wide receivers in the league.
They have D.K. who can play in the slot.
They have Ridley, who I think needs to play in the slot going forward.
That's probably what's going to be best for him throughout the rest of his career
as his physicality wanes down as he gets older.
You need to keep him away from press coverage and use him in motion and stuff like that,
which Brian Dable's slot wide receiver is what does that the most.
Check out my Wondale Robinson film breakdown on the Tick-Tac Titans YouTube channel
if you need to see how that works.
Or look at the Brian Dable scheme video that I made on the Tick-Tac Titans film channel.
I mean, what else do you need, folks?
I'm just delivering at all turns and all steps.
I have you covered, you know?
But the point remains that the Titans need a bigger wide receiver right now.
Because all they have is Elyke-O Manor.
He's the only big, bodied, physical wide receiver that they have.
So the Titans are kind of pigeonholed right now in the sense of, you know,
let's say Zachariah Branch is the best wide receiver on the board.
Well, do they really need another Zachariah Branch?
Not really.
If they trade back and Mackay Lemon is the best player on their board,
do they really need another Mackay Lemon?
Now, I would take my...
And Van Jefferson just went off the board to the Washington Commander,
so he's not coming back to be that other physical receiver,
which whatever, I wasn't, you know,
they can take Van Jefferson and Traillenberg's
what alternate reality Tennessee Titans there.
But the point remains here, like I've been saying,
if you bring in Joanne Jennings,
now you can take a Zachariah Branch.
You can do that.
Or you could take a Chris Brasel.
It doesn't matter.
You're open, you're free.
You could take, you don't need something.
You could take whatever is the best.
best value in front of you. So at this point,
Joanne Jennings is not going to get a big time contract.
Maybe a two year deal, $10 million per season.
He's not going to get four years 70 like Romeo Dobbs and Wondale Robinson.
Like that's not where the market is at right now.
That's not going to happen.
So bring him in.
He's from Tennessee, went to Tennessee, probably would like to come home.
Robert Sala knows him well
and if Robert Sala, I am worried about his personality
he is one of the most
hated players in the NFL
point blank period
people hate him
go look at some of the comments
from people about Jawan Jennings
the names that they've called him
the things they've said about him
they don't like him
people don't like him
but like I said earlier this week
you know it's like having a Dennis Rodman
or a Dremon Green or a Dylan Brooks
on your team yeah when you play against him
you hate that guy.
But when he's on your team,
it's kind of fun to have the bully on your team.
You know what I'm saying?
So, at the price range that I expect Joanne Jennings to be at now,
I'm less scared.
If Robert Sala signs off on the personality
and doesn't think it's a problem, I'm less scared.
And with the signings the Titans have already made
that I was worried would be replaced by a Joanne Jennings signing,
I'm not scared.
I'm not afraid anymore.
You know, like, do it.
Why not?
Do it.
I'm in on Joanne Jennings at this point.
Now, the Titans obviously still need help other places.
Graham Glasgow, who's 34 years old, but, I mean, at this point, at center, why not?
Ethan Posich, Andre James,
bring one of them in to compete with Shlopeman, apparently is how you say it.
Bring one of them in, because she's,
Shloatman shouldn't be, I like saying Schlotman a whole lot better, man.
I wish, you know, I don't determine the names here.
Travis E.T.N. is apparently Travis A. Cham.
What? How do you let people mispronounce your name like that for a decade in the public spotlight?
Whatever. Side tangent.
That's a locked on NFL conversation, not a locked on Titans one.
But nonetheless, Shloatman can't be the expected starter.
And Jackson Slater, I always saw Jackson Slater as more of a guard.
So have Jackson Slater and Kevin Zitler battle it out.
And then have Shlopman and Graham Glasgow battle it out.
And Glasgow and Zytler played together in Detroit.
That could be a really smart one-year solve.
Wyatt Teller, if you're not going to bring back Kevin Zitler,
bring in Wyatt Teller.
Let him and Jackson Slater compete for the right guard position.
I'm here for that.
Why not go get Joey Bosa at this point?
Give him one year 10 million like the bills did.
give him one year 12 million.
Why not?
You got $20 to $30 million in free money.
Why not bring in Joey Bosa?
Robert Sala used his brother, Nick Bosa.
I mean, Nick Vosa is the bigger, stronger, more physical athlete,
and he's a younger player.
Obviously, there's durability issues,
but you're playing with house money at this moment in time.
Literally, house money.
So why not go give Joey Bosa a deal to come in and be a speed rusher?
And you just need him in a rotational situation.
sense. If he gets hurt, he gets hurt.
No harm, no foul.
You still need to draft an edge rusher pretty high in the draft.
Brian Robinson
at running back is who I want them to go get.
Whether you're going to draft Jeremiah Love,
whether you're going to cut Tony Pollard,
no matter what you're going to do at running back,
Brian Robinson helps as a downhill north and south power runner.
Bobby O'Karek, the Titans still haven't added a depth linebacker
and Dre Greenlaw went back to Cerey.
Francisco. Go get Bobby O. Kriquet.
That's what I want to see the Titans do with this extra money.
Will they?
I guess we'll see as the weekend turns.
But I'm going to be back with you guys on Monday.
What an incredible week.
Whenever 20K subscribers, the Titans made a bunch of big moves.
They brought out the New Jersey's, the new logo, the new brand.
Absolutely incredible.
What a week to be a Tennessee Titans fan.
Next week, I'm going to kick things off with a little mock draft Monday.
and we're going to look at what it would look like
if the Tennessee Titans didn't go with Jeremiah Love
because right now, again, as I've felt since January,
I think the Titans like David Bailey.
So we'll talk about that on Monday.
That's going to do it for me today though, folks.
As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland,
and this was Locked on Titans.
