Starting point is 00:00:01 I think the Jacksonville Jaguars absolutely failed the off season, and it's going to let the Tennessee Titans gain some ground in the AFC South. Starting point is 00:00:36 We're going to continue AFC South rivalry week and start our team deep dives with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who I think had a terrible offseason was one of the big losers from the NFL's offseason period

Starting point is 00:00:50 and I think it's going to let the Tennessee Titans gain some ground. We're going to talk about why I think the Titans match up with the Jackson a way that will let them split the contest this year. We're going to get inside information from Tony Wiggins,

Starting point is 00:01:04 the host of Locked on Jags, but we got to start with a review of the Jacksonville Jaguars offseason so far and why I think they were one of the big losers in the NFL, and it starts with what they lost. They lose Travis E.T.N. or A.N., whatever he's going to be called now. They lose Devin Lloyd in the middle of their defense on a reasonable deal to go to Carolina. They dropped Greg Newsom who they traded for. They lose Andrew Wingerd, who's been a stalwart in their secondary for years. They let go of Daimi Brown. That contract never made sense. And I think that was one that I didn't like in real time there. Now, they did add Chris Rodriguez in the back field, but, you know,

Starting point is 00:01:42 what are we doing there? Outside of that, it was mostly in the draft. And I think that's where the real heart of my feelings for the Jaguars all season actually come in. They don't have a first round pick because of Travis Hunter. They add Nate Berkiture, the tight end, who, based on the consensus board, they over drafted by 50 to 100 spots. I mean, what an incredible reach. And when that's your first pick of the draft so far, and then you're going to follow that up by paying Breton Strange this all season. They brought back Buster Brown, which I like Emmanuel Pregnone later in the draft was a guy that I really, really liked. So a good draft pick there for the Jaguars. But overall, how did they get better? Where did the Jags get better?

Starting point is 00:02:25 And what they're relying on, in my opinion, it's funny that Tony's going to mention it later when when we talk about the Jags and I bring him on the host of Locked on Jags, and he kind of reframes the Jaguars offseason in a different way as it's actually the opposite of ego, what they're doing. But I'll be honest, and I've said it on Locked on NFL. It's nothing Tony doesn't know, but I don't buy it. I don't buy it. I don't buy that the Jags were just humble this all season, quiet,

Starting point is 00:02:54 relied on themselves. No, they think that they got it all figured out. We're going to go against the grain and the draft. we're going to go from Travis E.T. N. Chris Rodriguez and say, well, hey, Liam Cohen had Chris Rodriguez in Kentucky. He knows him. But Bichal Tutin and Chris Rodriguez, that's good enough. That's a good running back group.

Starting point is 00:03:14 Bichael Tutin's going to be just as explosive and Rodriguez will be our hammer. That'll be good enough. I don't know about that. I don't know. So I don't see where the Jags got better. And it felt like they did a lot of things that were just ego. We don't need to bring in anybody new.

Starting point is 00:03:32 We'll let some of our best players go. We got internal replacements. We're good. Hey, we're good over here. We don't need anything. And to me, it goes back to James Gladstone, their general manager. It goes back to his approach in his very first draft.

Starting point is 00:03:49 They traded a bunch of picks, and they moved up to get Travis Hunter, and they told us he's a two-way superstar in the NFL, a generational revolutionary player, absolutely worth the picks. We're going up and get them. We don't care. And that didn't turn out at all.

Starting point is 00:04:06 But they were still good. They were still good. So you know in Jacksonville that they're sitting there saying, oh, you know, our first round pick barely helped us and we were 13 game winners, won the division, went to the playoffs.

Starting point is 00:04:21 We don't need to listen to, do anything. We don't care about the consensus board. We know exactly what we're doing here in Jacksonville. and we're doing it our way. And listen, like me and Tony talk about, you can commend the Jacks for saying, hey, we're going to do it our way. And that's the way that we're going to do it

Starting point is 00:04:35 because at the end of the day, isn't that what me or you would do? But there is a level of hubris to it. There is a level of, hey, all of you guys are wrong and we're right. We're not going to do what the general consensus should be. Not only are we not going to do what the general consensus should be, but we're going to do the total opposite of that.

Starting point is 00:04:58 That's bold. And listen, when you do that, you can get massive amounts of praise. It's boom or bust. You can look like an absolute genius. You're going to get so much credit. If Travis Hunter comes back, he's a two-way superstar this year.

Starting point is 00:05:12 He's awesome. He revolutionizes the team like they thought that he would and has a great year. He's put on weight. He looks fantastic. All that awesome. If that happens, they're going to look like absolute geniuses. But if it doesn't go

Starting point is 00:05:26 the way the chicks And if the Jags fall in line with thousands of NFL teams in past, where they had a really, really good season, and it's like, hey, we're never coming down. We're only going up, baby. This elevator goes to the top. And then it comes down just recently. The Titans.

Starting point is 00:05:52 The Bengals. Think about those teams. The Jags of years past. Think about the year they went to the playoffs with Blake Bortles and they thought that they were on the way up. I'm just saying, maybe the Jags turned into a juggernaut

Starting point is 00:06:05 under Liam Cohen and James Gladstone. Maybe so. But the odds are higher in NFL history that going way against the grain, really pushing back, we're doing it our way. Doing it that way,

Starting point is 00:06:26 more often than nothing. ends up going down. And even if you do it the right way, a lot of times, it ends up going down. So when you do it the way that the Jags did it this all season and smelled your own farts the whole time, there's a lot of egg on your face if it doesn't go well. And here are some realities.

Starting point is 00:06:50 Jacksonville's schedule isn't going to be as easy as it was last year. They're not getting that bottom-tier schedule this year like they got last year. That ain't happening. And listen, their schedule, it's got some spots, but it is pretty difficult.

Starting point is 00:07:10 I mean, they start with the Browns. That's easy, but at the Broncos early on, Patriots, Bengals, Eagles, Texans. I think the Bengals are going to be really good this year. I think the Texans are going to be really good this year. The by week, you get the Colts, I don't think they're going to be good. But Ravens, at the Ravens,

Starting point is 00:07:26 at the Titans, back to back, at the Giants, who I think will be improved. Titans again at the Bears playoff team from last year. Monday night football against the Steelers. That'll be an interesting matchup. Jacksonville, Dallas, Washington, finish with the Colts. Like, I could see Jacksonville regressing a little bit, right? Tougher schedule. People have more tape on the offense and the defense. They didn't really improve the roster talent. If anything, the roster talent got worse. I still think they're a decent team, but do I think that they're going to win 13 games this year? I do not.

Starting point is 00:08:08 I think there are more like 9, 10, 11 wins this year is what I'm expecting from Jacksonville, which will be right on that playoff line. It'll be right on that playoff line. But I just don't like what they've done this all season. I think they really, instead of pedal to the medal trying to get better like a lot of other teams in the AFC, the Texans made me. moves to get better. The Broncos traded for Jalen Waddle. The bills went out. They got Bradley Chub. They got

Starting point is 00:08:40 DJ Moore. The other team. The Patriots went out and got A.J. Brown. Right? Like, a lot of the other teams that were high in the AFC last year went out and really tried to make improvements to their

Starting point is 00:08:56 team. And Jacksonville sat back and said, no, we're good. We know what we're doing. We're the smartest guys. in the room. Don't you worry about your consensus board and free agency and the players we lost. No big deal. We got this. So, I'm just saying

Starting point is 00:09:11 we'll see. And when I say we'll see, I got to be honest. I don't think they're going to be as good this year. And I think Houston's going to be better. But we'll talk about Houston tomorrow. This is my thoughts on Jacksonville. Let's see how they're feeling in Jacksonville with the OG

Starting point is 00:11:23 you've got to do that for me and Tony covering everything around the league. But right now, we're going to do what we do best. And that's lock in on this AFC South rivalry between the Jags and the Titans. Tony, I guess my first question to you is what is just your overall feeling on what the Jags have done,

Starting point is 00:11:39 especially if you're paying attention. A lot of people have been critical of the Jags offseason. What's your read of things right now over the entire offseason? It's a well-run operation. And that's all you want. You know, the two things that are constants, well, three maybe, coaching continuity, and maybe that's not one coach, but it's like a group of coaches that all kind of believe in the same philosophy.

Starting point is 00:12:06 And good quarterback play. And then after that, to have the kind of operation where it feels like, okay, when your window is open, you're going to have like a decade of where you're going to be able to make this little run, right? Because people don't realize that's what the Patriots did. They made a run and then they were still okay, but they went nine years without winning a Super Bowl in that dynasty. They went three, nine years, and then three more. So the thing is, is you kind of hit it in bunches like Peyton Manning.

Starting point is 00:12:33 They had it. Donovan McNabb had it in Philadelphia. Patrick Mahomes has had it. Josh Allen has had it, still has it, but maybe it's shrinking a little bit. So the Jaguars are at the very beginning of that, in my opinion, because of how they totally changed their operation in their back office. And I'm sure Titan fans are probably hoping that in year one of Robert Sala, that it's the beginning. Like this year for them will be what last year was for us,

Starting point is 00:12:58 maybe not record-wise, but still where you can see the blue sky heading, and you've got a real reason to invest in the future of the franchise in terms of buying tickets and having that hope that it's not that far off that you're going to be good. Yeah, I would say it's windows, right? There's just, they have, you have windows. And the Titans have had windows, the Jags have had windows,

Starting point is 00:13:17 and we're both hoping that, you know, the Jags are a little far ahead, but we're about to go into a better window in terms of franchise history. But I know that a lot of people have been down on the Jags all season because they didn't quite do enough. They resigned their own guys. They brought in guys who were real fits for them, things like that. And that could be true. But out of all of that stuff, what do you think has been the best move so far

Starting point is 00:13:39 that the Jags have made this all season that can get them to that next level, at least in terms of team performance going forward? I think the best move is they swing. followed their ego. And not to say they didn't have one, I think everyone has one. But there are a lot of people that saw them in the draft because they went away from the quote unquote consensus board and said, these are some egotomaniacs. They think their opinion is bigger and better than everyone else. Now, I want you to stop right there, Tyler Roll. They are hired by Shod Khan, right, for their opinions and for their plan. They ain't hired by Shad Khan to listen to me and Tyler Rowland tell them what

Starting point is 00:14:15 they need to be doing or a consensus board made of 30 people that don't work in a building and 28 of them have never worked in an organization, whereas they got their own 50 guys that they chose on their own and they included them to be in their, they got their own consensus from inside of the building. So you tell me, who knows the roster better than people who are there every single day and more importantly, who knows what their weaknesses are? And that's the thing. When you look at the draft and you look at free agents, You see Chris Rodriguez, a more powerful runner who gets yards after carries, right? Who gets yards after contact.

Starting point is 00:14:52 Travis E.TN, big play guy, doesn't get yards after contact. We used to talk about it. It looked like he used to get caught by the sprinkler. It's like every time you think he's going to go all the way, he gets tripped up, right? And they go double tight end. They emphasize that right after the Seahawks and the Rams start playing three tight ends. And now everybody's saying the league is going in that direction. What does that tell you about their self-evaluation, their self-analysis?

Starting point is 00:15:18 We are not going to keep doing jet sweeps on fourth and one. We are not going to keep throwing the ball on first and goal from the seven and trying to make sure that we score points. Now it's about running when you want to and when you have to. So they told us, based on what they did, that they didn't have no hind parts. They needed some sandbags to put in their pocket. So that's what I mean by swallowing their ego and not looking at 13 and 4, saying, we can just run this thing back.

Starting point is 00:15:45 No, you cannot just run this thing back. You better get better and you better get better in the areas where you are weak and not the areas where everyone else outside of the facility is telling you that you're weak. Well, two things on that, Tony. Number one, I think it's funny that a lot of people have been critical of the Jags off season, like it's been ego and they've gone off the board and away from consensus. But what they've done is just try to get more physical as a football team.

Starting point is 00:16:11 And isn't that the old school approach that everyone usually applauds? Like, yeah, it's about the trenches being physical, being able to overpower guys. And the Jags are like, you know what? We're not doing the flashy thing. We're going to do the tough football physical thing. And yet people still aren't happy. So my second part of that is, if you got to be a general manager today,

Starting point is 00:16:30 they just, the genie wave the wand or whatever. And aren't you just going to say, hey, this might be my only shot? I'm doing it what I think I need to do. I'm doing it my way. And at the end of the day, that's what glass. Stone's doing right. That their way works. I mean, you don't think it works. They went 13 and 4 and people thought that they would barely, you know, do anything, right? And I think they feel like they did it without actually having everything in their arsenal that they want to be able to do it. Now,

Starting point is 00:16:59 the other part of them swallowing their ego, and this is where I, this is where I'll give Trent Balky credit the former GM. Just about every player that they've kept is someone who was already here. Just about every player that improved under their watch was someone that was already here. Now, Devin Lloyd and Travis A. Chan used their good years to parlay themselves into big contracts. And the Jaggs shook their hand and said, we appreciate you. Glad you got paid, but go ahead and make that business decision because we got to make our own business decision. But when you think about Parker Washington, this is a career year for him. And he's expected to be maybe the number one wire receiver.

Starting point is 00:17:36 Trayvon Walker was banged up. but when he was there, the impact that he had based on when he wasn't, they know, oh, no, he can't win. You don't see how good Trayvon Walker is. Go back and watch the cutups in that late season game that they won out in Denver. He was a menace. And this is what we keep trying to tell people that won't pay attention and won't listen. The dude is just, he's an unreal football player that makes everyone around him better.

Starting point is 00:18:01 Monterec Brown, we didn't even let him get the free agency. I know. I was hoping. Yeah, these are, I know you were. I saw you mentioned, but these are all guys that were there under Trent Barking. Col Van Lannan got a contract extension, three years, $51 million to be the left tackle. Anton Harrison just had his 50-year option picked up. So what they didn't do was just assume, I got to come in here and clean house and get my guys in. They said, no, we're going to evaluate this thing for what it is. Antonio Johnson and Brenton Strange just got one too, and Antonio Johnson is up next to safety.

Starting point is 00:18:33 So it's like, we're going to look at this. Once we took a. over the team, all of these guys are ours and they're going to make smart decisions. The good thing that they do is come here and be nothing more than yourself. Leave it up to us to decide if you're the type of player that needs to be here, but you don't need to change. We want you to do exactly what it is it is that you do. That's why Travis Hunter is going to play both ways. No, we make the decision to get you here. Now, we're just going to build everything around you and make a demand And out of, you know, it's going to be very, very demanding. And when we draft players, we ain't drafting for Blue Sky.

Starting point is 00:19:08 We're drafting guys that are ready to cook right now, even if they don't have a high ceiling. Because they're burning them in and burning them out. And that's what happens. Look at the Rams. The Rams, fine linebackers from everywhere, offensive line are from everywhere. And everyone's like, they found Pookin the Cool in the sixth round. Cooper Cup in the third round is like, where are getting these people from? Because they're getting guys that fit their system.

Starting point is 00:19:29 And if they have to roll them in and roll them out, You always have competition because every single player you draft has that characteristic. So come here and be nothing more to yourself and understand that it's going to be competitions and we're going to make business decisions. But they're not running from the grind. And I think that's the part of this I love, man. Well, it's funny that you mentioned that Gladstone didn't just get rid of a bunch of guys from the previous organization.

Starting point is 00:19:53 He kept the guys who deserved it when Mike Borganzi from the Titans, he trade to Vandre Sweat, trade Jarvis Brownlee Jr. They're not his guys. blah, blah, blah. People kind of mention stuff like that. Sometimes it's an interesting way to do it. Last question for you here, just a quick two-parter. What's one thing maybe that concerns you about the Jags this year? If it doesn't go as well as people are hoping for, what would be the reason?

Starting point is 00:20:14 Like what's the number one concern in Jacksonville right now? And how many games do you think they win this year? Obviously, the number one concern for anyone is a team staying healthy. I hate using that word, I, and has jury at the end. I hate using it. But it's the nature of the business. Obviously, health. especially in certain spots along the offensive line,

Starting point is 00:20:34 as you well know, a bad off of the line to make your entire team look terrible. Last year, believe it or not, when they played against Buffalo in the playoff game, that they were winning with a minute and a half to go. And outside of the late throw on a busted coverage, Josh Allen basically was throwing a bunch of three-and-four-yard passes and they were getting first downs.

Starting point is 00:20:53 They did that without Travis Hunter, without Jordan Lewis, and for the most part, with a banged-up Eric Murray. Their secondary was they weren't there. Monterrey Brown was playing in a slot because they had another dude that they traded for outside. And that's where the busted coverage came from. So my point is, is they didn't have full strength. Jordan Lewis and Travis Hunter are both a little bit more sticky. They got to get a little bit more sticky.

Starting point is 00:21:17 They win that game. And then they go right back to Denver. And guess what? They just beat Denver three weeks in a row. So I think health is the first thing that they have to have to be health. I am not worried about them being complacent. one bit. I'm just not. A tougher schedule. The fact that people will see them coming now. And the fact that, you know, you guys are upcoming team and I ain't worried about the coach too much,

Starting point is 00:21:39 but Houston is formidable. And they got a lot better in the offseason. So when the rabbit has the gun, it's a little bit different. I don't expect them to win 13 games. I wouldn't be surprised that they won 14 or 15 because of the way they are so myopic about winning what is in front of you and being where your feet are. They won games last year and they had to say, we don't apologize for winning games. They didn't even have everything that they wanted, but they were able to be in the moment and figure out a way to get the W. So I'll never, ever count them out because they really take the game from a learned, Tyler, you know what it's like, I told him that too. I said, this is like Revenge of the NERGE. James Gladstone is young

Starting point is 00:22:21 and Liam Cohen's a football junkie. This is like if Tony Wiggins and Tyler Rowling hanging here on locked on and we're talking about football and then somebody somewhere said, I want you to be my coach and I want you to be the GM. I'll let you be the coach because I ain't got time to get phone calls in the middle of the night because I got other stuff to do. I wanted you to be the GM anyway. Yeah, man. I'll say, Tyler, what you need. You tell me to go shopping and I'll go shop. It's like guys like us run the team. And they think everything through the heavy in analytics, but they're also heavy and looking people in their eye and figuring it out. So I think they're going to be competitive. They won't have a game, I believe.

Starting point is 00:22:56 like the Rams game, they got blown out last year. They won't have a game like against Seattle, but they didn't get blown out, but they got pushed around. I don't think they'll do that. They won't have a game like against Houston. They have a 19-point lead, and they blow it in the last 14 minutes

Starting point is 00:23:11 and then have to sweat it out to see if they were going to win the division at the end of the year. They won't do that this year. But I don't know if they'll win 13 games. You can actually win 12 and be better because it's just different and then be ready to go when it comes. playoff time. Yeah, I think that it's fair to say that Jacks could win less games and be a better

Starting point is 00:23:32 team, quote, unquote, and be a more formidable team that that is more experienced and ready to go. I don't know if that'll happen. I can't say I'm rooting for that. I can tell you that. I know, well, I can say you ain't rooting for it. I know for a fact you ain't rooting for it. Come on, man, I can't take it because I think the Texans are going to be real good too. So I got to get something. I'm leaving here with something, right? I can't just, you know, have all the teams get better at once. But that's probably the way it'll go. Titans will get better, but a lot of other teams will get better, too. But interesting to see what will happen with Jacksonville, of course.

I think the Tennessee Titans will get a game from the Jacksonville Jaguars this year. And I think the Titans will catch up to Jacksonville from a record perspective. But with that being said, I think the Titans split with the Jags this year. Again, I think the Titans are around the six or seven win range. I think Jacksonville will be about nine or ten is where I'm at. And that is shrinking a big time gap. There was a 10-win gap last year. And I think that's exactly what the Tennessee Titans need to do. They need to shrink the gap in the division

Starting point is 00:26:12 between them and the other teams. I don't think that the Titans are going to be able to climb all the way back up into the division lead in one year and lap everybody, pass everybody up and do all that. I hope so. That would be awesome, right? But I just don't find that realistic. But getting back into the race, being more competitive in the division,

Starting point is 00:26:32 I think that's critical. And part of that is winning division games. You are not going to be able to get better this year if you don't start in your division. You have to start with your division. And Jacksonville is a team who I think is susceptible. And again, the way that the teams match up to me, Jacksonville's offense is really, really good.

Starting point is 00:26:58 They are really good. I talked about concerns with the running back group. I think that's a weak group for them, no doubt about it. But the offensive line was pretty solid last year. And I think Anton Harrison, Cole Van Lannning at tackle, Van Lannin at Tapel. I was going to say Van Lanning for some reason. Don't know why. But anyway,

Starting point is 00:27:20 decent tackles, but the interior offensive line, Ezra Cleveland, Robert Hainesie, Patrick McCarrey. I think that Jeffrey Simmons and John Franklin Myers can have some success there. Like, I don't think that's a terrible group by any means, but I think that the Titans advantage can be plus. That's not like a strength-on-strength matchup, where Jacksonville should be able to control John Franklin Myers and Jeffrey Simmons and not let that wreck the game.

Starting point is 00:27:47 No, that's going to wreck the game. It's going to wreck the game. So I think that's a big advantage for it. Now, I will tell you, the second, I think Jacksonville has the best top four wide receiver group in the entire NFL. I talked about that when we did our wide receiver rankings on the first episode of the week where I ranked every position group in the AFC South on offense and defense. Starting point is 00:28:07 but the Titans interior defensive line being able to have an advantage over the Jags interior offensive line gives the Titans defensive line an opportunity to help the Titans secondary with a very talented wide receiver group from Jacksonville. Again, I think Jacksonville's mismatch in the secondary almost as as big as the Titans, but the Titans defensive line can totally wreck that advantage and not allow it to happen. That's the problem. If the Jacks had advantage on the offensive line, then it would just let things go haywire, right?

Starting point is 00:28:43 But having the advantage up front is more important than having the advantage out in space because it doesn't matter what you do out in space if I dominate you up front. So the Titans have a big advantage there to help slow down Jacksonville's offense and with the running backs not being great, maybe the run game won't be able to affect the Titans as bad either.

Starting point is 00:29:03 And then I go to the other side of the ball and I think the big weakness for me is the back seven for the Jacksonville Jaguars. that secondary, I like Buster Brown at Outside Corner. I was hoping the Titans could sign him, so I like him for sure. And maybe Travis Hunter is awesome. Maybe Travis Hunter is awesome

Starting point is 00:29:18 at cornerback now, which is probably his more natural position. Maybe that's the case. But Jordan Lewis in the slot, Eric Murray at Safety isn't a bad player, but he isn't great. Antonio Johnson is a question mark. I just look at the secondary of the Jags and I see pedestrian.

Starting point is 00:29:35 And with the Titans, big advantage, being the wide receiver group, they might be able to win some matchups. And Cam Ward can make some plays. Now, the problem is, like with the Titans on the other side, there's a mismatch up front. The tackles of the Titans,

Starting point is 00:29:58 Dan Moore, J.C. Latham, and the edge rushers of Jacksonville, Tramon Walker, Josh Heinz Allen. That's advantage Jacksonville, no doubt about it. But I'll tell you this. The Titans' interior offensive line is a big concern as well, other than Peter Skoronsky. But Eric Armstead, Devon Hamilton, Rookerororo, who they traded for, Albert Regis, a third-round pick, which I thought was an overdraft as well.

Starting point is 00:30:26 I am not very high on the Jags defensive line outside of Walker and Heinz Allen. All of their depth, their defensive tackles, not very good. So I don't know that if the Titans are able to help with the edge rushers, if they can stop Walker and JHAA from wrecking the game, I think everything else is advantage Titans. FOIA-O-O-Con is a very good linebacker, but Ventrell Miller, completely unproven. So I don't think that Jacksonville's roster is so much better than the Titans, that they shouldn't be able to win one of those games.

Starting point is 00:31:12 And if Cam Ward wouldn't have got hurt last year, I think the Titans might have beat Jacksonville in Week 18. It was looking like they had a shot. So now that wasn't, you know, full Jags squad, obvious, for obvious reasons. But you know what I'm saying. Either way. With that being said, that is going to do it for today's breakdown

Starting point is 00:31:28 on the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tomorrow we're going to look at the Houston Texans. Again, same format. We'll review the Texans all season. I'll give my take on what they did this year, who I think they are as a team. We'll talk to John Hickman from Locked on Texans on his thoughts. on what the Texans are doing from there locally,
