I believe Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi will turn the Titans around
and his press conference on Wednesday made me even more excited.
I'll tell you what he had to say on today's edition of Locked on Titan.

On today's show, I'm going to go over everything
that Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borganzi had to say
at his press conference and explain why I still have faith
that Mike Borgonzi is the guy to turn this thing around.
We'll talk about why I am so optimistic about Mike Borgonzi
and what he can do here.
We'll talk about some of the things Borgonzi had to say
about who the Titans' cornerstones are and the building blocks
and why he made all the different trades that he made.
And he had some comments about the Titans coaching search
that I found very interesting as well.
Before we get into all of that,
do want to thank you for making Locked on Titans
your first listen each and every day.
Remember Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans,
content all year round always for free
make sure that you get subscribe
stay subscribed it's your team every day
speaking of every day
shout out to my everydayers out there
tuning in Monday through Friday
couldn't do it without you guys and if you aren't an
everydayer you need to be one
but with that being said again
I believe
Mike Borgonzi is the right guy
to turn this thing around
and I know that there are a ton of people out there
who look at the Titans record the way the teams
perform Brian Callahan's performance
some of the trades that God made
here, especially the Jarvis Bradley Jr. one, and a lot of people may not agree with that.
And that's perfectly fine. But every time
that Mike Borgonzi speaks, he says things that make a ton of sense to me.
He's transparent. He's honest.
He gives you the truth without being disrespectful. He does it in a professional way.
And again, the self-awareness of Mike Borgonzi.
You listen to him speak in that press conference.
He is a guy who understands the team is not good.
We need to be a lot better
There's a lot of stuff that has to take place to do it
Like he just seems like a guy who truly understands the situation
And he doesn't BSU about the situation either
As he's trying to explain it
And I thought one of his opening comments about the trust of the fan base
Was really, really, really good to hear
And this is courtesy of Tennessee Titans.com
The results aren't good enough right now
And we understand that
And we understand the frustration
you know, with the fan base.
And we know that we have to earn back
the trust of this fan base.
I feel their passion and I feel their frustration right now.
And, but we are doing everything possible right now
to get this right and to fix it.
And we will.
I believe we will at the end of the day.
And I believe he will too.
Like, I'm sorry, call me naive, call me whatever you want to call me.
I do believe that Mike Borges
knows what he's doing and at the end of the day
a lot of this comes down to and whether
fans have faith in Mike Borganzi or not
for some reason it is strangely
taught it is strangely connected
to Chad Brinker and we just can't get away
from this people just hate Chad Brinker
and again as I've talked about throughout the week
I just don't understand it like
Chad Brinker
has never been a guy
who's made enough decisions for us to look
at him and say that they were bad you know what I mean
and hiring Mike Borganzi
who I think truly does understand
how to build a roster, comes from a place that was very successful,
started at the bottom when the team wasn't very good
and built it all the way back up to what we see in the Chiefs right now
and how good they've been for the last however many years, you know what I mean?
Like, I just think Mike Borganzi is a strong football guy
with a great work ethic who knows what he's doing.
And right now he's trying to get out from under the mess that was created
before he showed up, but he understands that and he knows how to speak
and he knows what to say
and all the moves that he's made
including the draft class that he's put together
that we'll talk about here in just a moment
show me that so far
he does know what he's doing
Draymont Jones was one of his moves
he's obviously part of the reason
that Bones Fossil got hired in here
and then you know
look at the rookie class
like I said like the only things
that are good on this team
are because of Mike Borgonzi at this point in time
like Jeffrey Simmons yes but he's been around
for forever so I just think
that Mike Borgonzi has done enough at this point in time
to have some trust from the fan base
and I don't think that he's done enough bad
to have people be out on him already
but some of the things that people didn't like were the trades
and we start with Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
And Mike Borgonzi talked about the Jarvis Brownlee Jr. trade
and he confirmed exactly what I told you after the trade happened
and exactly what was obvious after the trade happened.
That this was not about the football player
this was about Jarvis Brownley Jr. behind the scenes.
Again, courtesy of Tennessee Titans.com.
I like Jarvis, and I think he's going to be a really good player in this league.
We don't have the culture right now sometimes
to help guys develop right now.
And we thought at the time, you know,
just some of the habits weren't conducive to building the culture right now.
I mean, that tells you everything you need to know, right?
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. was a problem behind the scenes.
Now, that doesn't justify the trade.
If you want to say, so what?
I don't care that he was a problem.
he was a good player, bring in better coaching that can deal with him, all of that.
But this goes back to the point that I have been making all week about poker stacks.
Like, when you're the Ravens, when you're the Eagles, when you're the Rams,
you can take on these headache players because you have a strong culture.
And Mike Borgonzi even referenced that in the press conference.
He's like, when we were in Kansas City, you have Pat Mahomes and you have Chris Jones,
and you have Travis Kelsey.
and it's like
you can't come in and trick off
because if you do
those dudes are going to put their thumb down on you
but he's admitting to you and being honest
the Titans don't have that culture
so they can't afford to take risk
on high character risk players
because they don't have the culture to keep them in line
and he's admitting that to you
through the Jarvis Brownlee Jr. trade
and he even said right there
we don't have the culture
to develop this player
he is telling you
the honest truth about the situation.
And that sort of transparency
despite the blowback and he even said
it was a controversial trade
I understand why
and he's like I get why the fans would look at that
he's a young talented player why would we do it
and he's literally telling you the problems
and the reason that we didn't are behind the seeds
now whether you want to accept that answer or not
is up to you individually
you get to decide whether you like that answer
but the logic and the reasoning
is as clear as possible
and he talked about
the Roger McCreary trade as well and like I told you guys
the Roger McCreary trade and the Jarvis Brownley Jr.
trade were different and he talked about the reality of
Roger McCrary being on a rookie car
or being at the end of his rookie contract.
Roger's a good player part of the strategy when you're looking at the roster
and evaluating the market in terms of you know
he's in an expiring contract
and what's it going to look like next year.
What are they going to have to pay Roger McCreary next year?
of the market slot cornerback money. Does that make sense for the Tennessee Titans to do?
And he's not going to come out and say it. But Roger McCreary is not the type of
cornerback that Chad Brinker and Mike Borganzi believe in. They want longer
cornerbacks, even their slot cornerbacks. And McCreery has historically short arms and
really small hands. He's terrible in catch point situations. He always has been. He can't play
on the outside so he's limited to the inside. That's just not what they're looking for in a
player and if you don't like the style of the player that you have, why would you pay that player
$12, $13 million a year? It just doesn't make a lot of sense so it always made sense to trade
Roger McCreary and there you go. Mike Morgonzi telling you the honest truth being open and
transparent about the thought process behind the moves that they made and Dremont Jones again a great
trade in my opinion and Mike Organzi admitted they didn't even want to get rid of Dremont Jones.
We aren't looking to move on from Dremont right now.
But we also have to think about the future of this program and we're at.
And, you know, we had a chance to acquire a pick.
And they had to do it.
And he confirmed the conditions of the pick.
Dremont Jones needs two sacks in the playoffs.
And he even said, so now we're all hoping that Dremont gets two sacks
and the Ravens make the playoffs.
I mean, he's literally saying it out loud exactly how we all feel.
But again, that is the exact logic that we thought it was.
Dremont Jones has played well
He even admitted
Hey the way that Dremont's played over the last month
Probably had a lot to do with how many people were calling about
So the fact that Mike Borgonzi admitted
We didn't want to get rid of Dremont Jones
But we got offered too good of a deal to pass up
And that's exactly what it looked like
And that's why I loved the trade so much when it was announced
So everything that Mike Borgonzi said in this press conference
made great sense to me
And he went on to talk about
Yeah you know we traded guys
But he thinks that there are a real
building blocks on this roster and went out of his way to say like not everything is going poorly.

Let's continue today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast.
We talked about Mike Borgonzi's opening statement in his press conference,
talking about the trust of the fans and why I appreciate that transparency and that honesty.
We talked about all three of the trades and the behind-the-scenes logic for why the trades were made.
And again, not a surprise.
If you've been listening to the Locked-on Titans podcast, again, make sure you get subscribed,
and stay subscribed. It's your team every day.
But Mike Borgonzi talked about the players that he wants to keep around as well.
And that starts with the Tennessee Titans rookie class.
And the rookie class has been one of the only bright spots for this team this year.
And Mike Borgonzi talked about why it's a bright spot as well.
I want to highlight the rookie class that we have.
You know, I think it's a special class. I really do.
And not just because I was a GM who picked these players.
But I do feel like it's a special class.
It's a class that we can build upon.
They represent everything that we want to tighten.
From day one, they stepped in this building.
You know, their work ethic, their passion, their drive to get better.
And they are getting better right in front of our eyes.
And they're all playing and they're developing.
And they are improving.
He's not wrong.
He's not wrong at all.
I mean, Kevin Winston's finally getting an opportunity to play.
Marcus Harris finally getting an opportunity to play in the back end.
They're young players, but they're getting opportunities and they're getting better.
Like Kevin Winston improving from the first couple of defensive snaps to what we saw last week,
already improving.
Marcus Harris is going to get more opportunities at slot cornerback now
with Roger McCreery being gone.
And I can't wait to watch him in the final eight games of the season.
You go over to the offensive side of the ball.
We haven't seen a lot of Jackson Slater because we haven't had to.
And Callow Mullings has been on IR for most of the season.
But we know that the fourth round rookies have all gotten better.
You know what I mean?
Elykeyeo Manor is still struggling with some drops.
But even as bad performances, four catches, 52 yards.
You know, with the lack of help around the offense
and the overall health of the offense,
how can you be mad about what we're seeing from Elico Manor?
And Chim D.K., we know, has been absolutely fantastic.
I mean, he's the all-pro returner in the NFL right now,
leading the NFL in all-purpose yards,
which is something that Mike Borganzi talked about in the press conference.
And they asked about Cam Ward and his performance,
and he said, Cam's improving.
He's playing like a rookie.
And we have talked about it.
Not a great game from Cam in this last game against the Chargers,
but compared to his first couple of games of the season
and the first month of the season,
and then compared to,
since Mike McCoy has taken over,
Cam Ward has looked decidedly more normal
at NFL quarterback.
And again, we talk about the circumstances and everything.
And Gunner Helm, I mean, Gunner Helm has been awesome
in the limited opportunities that they've given it.
He even said, like, Gunner's a good one.
He even said that.
know Gunner Helm is a legit starting
tight end for the future. Like that
is confirmed at this time even in the
limited opportunities that they've given him
so I love hearing that
and he even said hey it's not just because I drafted
these guys and he's right
it's not just because he drafted these guys these rookies
have been balling out
and it hasn't all been great
listen I say balling out but it's probably
the honest description
is probably a bit more muted than that
just but compared to all
the other crap that we've seen all year
How could you not be thoroughly excited about the rookies?
And Femiola Dejo is on IR right now,
but he played his best game right before he went to IR.
He started getting better,
and as I've pointed out to you guys over and over and over again
throughout the season,
the rest of the rookie edge class has not been very good.
So by comparison, it's not like Femiola Dejo's been a disaster
or something like people try to act.
Compared to the rest of his rookie class,
he's actually been pretty solid.
And he even said he expects to get Femi back out on the field.
later this year. So he really does need to come back as soon as he possibly can.
I know people are thinking, well, he broke his leg.
It was a small fracture in his, I believe,
tibia is a way to say it.
I've actually broke my tibia before.
But it's not something that is a guarantee to be out all season.
It just needs to heal correctly.
You know what I mean?
So I think we could even see Femi back.
More than on the field,
we talk so much about Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
Tavondre Sweat, they're fit in the locker room to build the culture around.
As Mike Porganzi is talking about,
these guys have the right mentality
to be people who you can build a culture around
and who can set the stage
and set that culture down
for when the Titans are able to maybe take more risk
on risky players and have them in their locker room.
These are the young players who are going to build that culture up.
Now, they need help, they need more reinforcements.
We know all that, but at the end of the day,
Mike Borganzi is being honest with you.
It's confirmed by what we've seen so far.
The rookies are a complete bright spot.
But he also talked about Jeffrey Simmons.
and he mentioned
that Jeffrey Simmons is a building block
he said Jeffrey Simmons is invaluable
Jeffrey Simmons is going to be
one of the reasons that we turn this thing around
like things change
very quickly in the NFL
and if the Titans got two first round picks
for Jeffrey Simmons as an offer this offseason
I think they probably have to do it
I think they would
and Mike Burgundy declined
to comment on whether he got
offers for Jeffrey Simmons and you know specific teams and was asked about the
Cowboys and he's like I'm not going to talk about he said we talked to all 31 teams
about trades so I'm not going to go over every discussion we had with every team
on trades that never happened you know what I mean which again
that's a really smart answer from the general manager but it doesn't sound like
Jeffrey Simmons is going anywhere anytime soon he called Jeffrey Simmons one of the
cornerstones one of the building blocks and I don't think he's wrong look in the
I know it sounds crazy.
But in the NFL, things change quickly.
The best teams in the division go to the worst.
The worst team in the division goes to the best.
The worst teams in the NFL make a playoff run.
Like, these things happen all the time in the NFL.
So I know that it sounds crazy that the Tennessee Titans might become a more competitive team very quickly.
But if the Titans get the right coach in there,
they have a good player acquisition cycle.
There's no reason the Titans can't win six or seven games next year and be competitive.
And then the year after that, after another acquisition,
cycle. There's no reason that the Titans can't be competing for the division
title and being a series player in the playoffs. I know it seems insane to think that way
but you guys are just depressive down in the dumps. Oh, this team's going to be bad for a
decade like you're Eddie George. That's all nonsense. That's all nonsense.
Things happen much quicker in the NFL and having Jeffrey Simmons next year and
the year after that when he's still going to be an all pro level player, that's going
to allow the Titans to turn things around. So I get if they get an offer that they simply can't
refuse, but you don't need to give Jeffrey Simmons away for nothing just because you think
you're not good. That's not the smart thing to do either. And it sounds like that's not
what Mike Borganzi is willing to do. But we do got a coaching opening for the Titans and a
couple of things that Mike Borganzi said make it obvious this coaching staff isn't coming back
and he had something very optimistic to say about the Titans next head coach.

of the Locked-on Titans podcast breaking down everything that Mike Borgonzi had to say
at his press conference on Wednesday we talked about the trades we talked about the Titans
current roster now I want to move to some of the higher level stuff when we talk about
a head coaching search what the Titans are looking for in a coach when we talk about the
Chad Brinker Mike Borgonzi relationship and partnership and how that works before we
dive in do want to thank you again for making Locked on Titans your first listen each and
every day. But the Titans are going to need a new head coach. And I thought it was very interesting.
Mike Borgonzi, during the press conference, said a few things that make it clear.
Like he talked about the coaching staff right now because people tried to hammer Mike McCoy.
And he was like, I think Mike McCoy is doing the best that he can considering the circumstances.
He is literally telling you, we know that none of these coaches are good.
We just needed somebody to be the coach. And he's doing the best that he can.
Like he was not about to get up there and criticize Mike McCoy
when he probably had to beg Mike McCoy
to take the interim head coaching job
and offer him a big race too, in my opinion.
But he also said some things like
you know, these coaches move their families here and stuff
and he's basically saying they're about to have to move their families away again
you know and they all know it.
So he was very complimentary to the coaching staff
just because none of them are quitting and leaving
and, you know, doing all the things that
they could do.
Like, if you knew,
if you knew that your job was going to fire you in eight weeks,
would you work the whole time?
I got to be honest with you.
I'm not a big two week notice guy.
They wouldn't give me two weeks notice before they fired me.
Why would I give them two weeks of my work when I'm leaving?
Plus, let's be honest here.
It's nice to have that little two week break before you start your new job.
You know, I like that little reset, that little mini vacation,
staycation, you could say.
So a lot of these coaches could absolutely bail out if they wanted to.
I mean, Bill Callahan quit.
I know there was a son that got fired, but I'm just saying.
And Mike Borgonzi recognizes that.
But I love what Mike Borgonzi said about the next head coach.
Listen to this quote, and I'm all for it.
I want a leader here.
I don't care if it's defense offense.
Bang.
Bang.
I've been telling you guys,
they're going to go with an experience head coach.
They need somebody just to be a professional head coach who's run a professional program
who can create a culture in the locker room, who can be a leader and all of that.
They went, Mike Vrable was that kind of guy.
Okay?
And I think they needed somebody with a little more scheme intelligence.
And they went too far the other way with Brian Callahan.
They went with somebody with zero leadership qualities that was fully a scheme guy.
And he wasn't even that good of a scheme guy, sadly.
It didn't work out.
mean so you often see this when breakups happen whether it be romantic partnerships
whether it be head coaching in the NFL you're dating a blonde who's outgoing you might
look for a little more reserved brunette you know what I mean like you go for something
a little different sometimes you over index and you go too far the other way I think
we're about to see the Titans have a bit of a backlash to
hey, we don't really care if this guy calls plays on offense or defense.
We don't care if this guy is a scheme guy.
We just need a leader in the locker room, a culture guy.
But I think that a lot of the options out there
are going to give you both.
That's why I like Mike McCarthy.
Mike McCarthy is a leader, a professional,
has run multiple organizations,
brought them to success,
double-digit win seasons, playoff wins,
all that different stuff, top five offenses.
Mike McCarthy gives you the both of those.
things. You get the scheme stuff on offense and you get a professional leader with
experience. I think Robert Sala, another guy, the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator.
I think he makes a ton of sense. He is a leadership heavy guy,
but he also gives you the scheme stuff just on the defensive side of the ball.
And clearly, Mike Borgonzi doesn't care where you come from.
It's about the leadership.
And I think that's a good thing to hear because that is truly what the Tennessee Titans need.
I did want to take a few minutes.
Mike Morgonzi talked about Chad Brinker
and he said
Chad Brinker's invaluable to me
he is a cap guy
he handles all the stuff outside of the roster
but like
at this point
I am to the point where
the Titans have been so transparent
about Chad Brinker's role
and Mike Borgonzi's role
that if people
are facetious
if they're obtuse
if they purposefully don't try to understand that's on them.
Mike Borgonzi runs the roster.
He is going to pick the players that they draft.
He is going to pick the free agents that they sign.
He is going to pick who they cut,
who makes the 53-man roster,
who they trade.
That is Mike Borgonzi's job.
Now, Chad Brinker knows salary cap.
Chad Brinker knows injury management.
So what happens is Mike Borgonzi says,
I like these three free agent linebackers.
Chad Brinker says this is what we think their salary will be.
That's how it affects our salary situation currently.
This is what we think the injury report on that player is going to be.
Chad Brinker is providing information to Mike Borgonzi
for Mike Borgonzi to make roster decisions.
Now, while that is happening,
Chad Brinker is managing the equipment staff,
the medical staff,
Who is painting the field?
Who is tending to the practice field?
Who's mowing the grass?
Stadium management.
Worker stuff.
Dealing with HR and payroll.
And like, Chad Brinker is doing all of the things that an old-style general manager had to do
as well as manage the football team.
So all of this conversation about Chad Brinker and Mike Borgonzi and their roles
and Brinker's going to snake him and Borgonzi's going to snake him.
just think you guys are just lashing out emotionally. You're having a temper tantrum on the
floor of the grocery store. They have been open, honest, and transparent about who does what
and what the roles are and it's obvious to me. So there is no, we don't know who's doing this
and that we exactly know what's going on. We exactly know the structure and as it's been explained
and as we understand it, I think it's smart. I don't want Mike Borganzi to have to worry about
who's painting the Titans field. I don't want Mike
Gonsi to have to do all the logistical work for the Titans training camp schedule.
Like, why would I want him doing that?
I would rather him be focused on undrafted free agents,
monitoring the waiver wire, working on trades, crafting the roster.
Like it just, all you're doing is take a bunch of stuff
that general managers had to worry about 20 years ago
and removing that and let somebody else handle it.
It's delegation, not destruction.
what I mean? So I'm just kind of over the Chad Brinker
Mike Borgonzi drama conversation. It's obvious
what the setup is. It's obvious what everyone's role is.
Mike Borgonzi confirmed that and if
at this point if you don't understand it it's because you don't want
to understand it and you just want to complain because the team's not good.
So that's how I feel about that great press conference
for Mike Borgonzi. I believe that Mike Borgonzi is going to turn this thing
back around. But
With that being said, that is going to do it for me today.
