The Tennessee Titans have made the biggest position hire of the entire offseason, bringing
Bill Callahan home.
I'm diving into the news on an emergency edition of the Locked On Titans podcast.
Let's get it.
You are Locked On Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast
Network, your team every day.
Welcome to another emergency edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland.
25 years as a Tennessee Titans fanatic, certified film junkie,
breaking down the X's and O's with you guys,
cover the team for Sports Illustrated, cover the team for USA Today.
We got big news, ladies and gentlemen, Tennessee Titans fans everywhere.
It finally happened.
Bill Callahan is a Tennessee Titan.
Brian Callahan has not only done something absolutely incredible here,
but he has broken a record.
He has pulled off a first ever in the NFL,
a record. He has pulled off a first ever in the NFL, the first son to ever
hire his father on his coaching staff.
Absolutely incredible. This is the moment that we have been waiting for
basically since Brian Callahan was announced as the Tennessee Titans
head coach. The question immediately became, would
he hire his dad, one of the best offensive
line coaches in the NFL?
And the answer to that question is yes.
It is yes.
All right.
Before we dive into everything, thank you for making the Locked on Titans podcast your
first listen each and every day.
Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free. You're not going to beat that anywhere else. Make sure you get
subscribed. Stay subscribed. It's your team every day
here on the number one Tennessee Titans podcast
in the world. Locked on Titans.
So, I mean, we finally got the news. I believe
it was Mary Kay Cabot,
who is absolutely one of the best local reporters in the NFL,
covering the Cleveland Browns.
She put out the tweets.
Let it know.
It is 100% official.
The Cleveland Browns have allowed Bill Callahan to join his son in Tennessee.
And, you know, you guys should all thank me.
I want a bunch of thank yous
in the chat because as soon as I put out an episode, as soon as I drop my episode every night,
Big Titans news breaks. Every single time. I am the ultimate jinx, all right? Everyone on Twitter
already knows it. At Tic Tac Titans, everyone on YouTube is learning it now. The moment I drop,
big news is going to come out. So you are all welcome. Smash the is learning it now. The moment I drop big news is going to
come out. So you are all welcome. Smash the like button for me. The show's always free. All I ask
for in return is the press of a button. And maybe because I've given you guys two emergency episodes
this week, you can hit that subscribe button as well. But again, this is huge. I'm just going to
talk about the zoomed in view of this right now. Brian'm just going to talk about the zoomed-in view of this right now.
Brian Callahan is considered not only the best offensive line coach in the NFL,
but one of the best offensive line coaches of all time.
And not only that, you got Damian Woody, a former NFL player out there,
saying he's the best position coach in the NFL, period.
The best coach for one position in the NFL.
And you are bringing that man to the Tennessee Titans. And this just
absolutely continues. It absolutely continues. Exactly
what we talked about last night after the Denard Wilson news. Exactly
what we talked about on my show that came out earlier tonight where
Tyke Tolbert got hired as a wide receiver coach.
And look, please, I'm begging you guys,
make sure that you also go and watch the 6 o'clock show
that I put out earlier on Tyke Tolbert and Denard Wilson being hired as well.
I would really appreciate it.
But, it continues the trend of the Tennessee Titans
being a destination for these coaches.
Being a place where the most talented coaches in the NFL want to go.
And it's funny, if you look at the three coaches that the Titans have hired so far.
Look at the three coaches.
Bill Callahan, one of the best offensive line coaches of all time.
Offensive line.
Tyke Tolbert, one of the best wide receiver coaches in the NFL.
Wide receiver.
Denard Wilson, one of the best passing game and defensive back coaches in the NFL.
Secondary.
What are the Titans' top three needs, folks?
What are the Titans' top three positions that they need the most help at?
Wide receiver, offensive line, and defensive back.
Let Rand cook.
Let Rand Carthon cook.
All right?
The three biggest areas of need.
The Titans attack those first.
We're getting a defensive back specialist.
We're getting the best offensive line coach in the NFL.
We're getting one of the best wide receiver coaches in the NFL.
Bill Callahan will join his son again. This is the first time in NFL history that a son
has hired his father. I mean, you know, we look at all the ins and outs, the experience of the
coordinators, the experience of the candidates,
the people who are going to step in and do certain jobs,
how that can help the team.
But just ask yourself,
doesn't this sound like a storybook beginning?
Isn't this how greatness begins?
Isn't this how championship teams start?
When you look back at, oh, look at the story of this championship team.
Oh, the Titans fired a really good coach, but they got a better one.
He brought in his father.
It was the first time ever.
Like, this is the stuff that magic is made of, folks. These are the stories that echo throughout the history of the NFL.
This is huge.
And I've been somebody in the past, I've been somebody who said,
and I've been somebody in the past I've been somebody who said
you know what
the Titans don't spend enough
on assistant coaches
the Titans don't spend enough
the Titans aren't committed enough
to be a great organization
and Amy Adams Strunk has flipped that all on its head
they are going out and getting the best possible candidates
and you could say oh you're saying Vrabel
hired his buddies. This guy's just hiring his dad. Well, the thing is, Vrabel's buddies
sucked. And Callahan's dad, Papa Callahan,
as we will call him, Papa Callie, is literally one of the best
offensive line coaches in the history of the NFL.
I mean,
like this is an,
again, it's an incredible moment.
This is what we've been wondering about
since Brian Callahan was hired.
Will he be able to get his father
from the Cleveland Browns?
He's under contract.
According to the reporting from Mary Kay Cabot,
basically the Browns said,
you're all right, go ahead, Bill.
The Titans requested it and the Browns said, you're all right. Go ahead, Bill. The Titans requested it, and the Browns
let it happen. So what I do want to do is I want to thank the Browns
because the Browns could have played hardball.
Hardball. Hardball. Great movie, by the way.
Can't get the copyright strike, but if you know, you know.
But the Browns could have been jerks here.
And they could have said, no, we're keeping him.
He's under contract.
But the Browns did the right thing.
And let that man go coach with his son.
Like, that's huge.
All right?
That's huge.
So, shout out to the Browns.
Major respect.
Appreciate that. But this is out to the Browns. Major respect. Appreciate that.
But this is a monster hire, folks.
Like, as big of a hire as Brian Callahan was as the head coach,
this is almost equally as important.
Because, again, this team needed desperate offensive line help.
Not only talent-wise, but coaching-wise.
So, to get Brian Callahan and get his father in place, absolutely critical, absolutely
huge, and look, this isn't just good for the offensive linemen that the Titans will add.
This is incredible for the offensive linemen the Titans already have.
And we're going to dive into how important this is,
not only for going forward, but for the right now.
We're going to dive into how critical this Bill Callahan hire is
here in just a moment.

Titans fans, let's continue this emergency edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We just talked about the official news.
Bill Callahan let go, not let go,
but the Browns let him go to the Tennessee Titans
to join his son, Absolutely huge for the Titans.
Bill Callahan, one of the best offensive line coaches
in the history of the NFL.
And again, like a former NFL player,
Damian Woody said online,
he may be the best position coach in the NFL.
And this is absolutely critical for the Tennessee Titans.
Again, not only for the players that they're going to bring in
because this team needs better talent on the offensive line,
but this is absolutely critical for the players that are already on the Titans.
I have started to bang this drum here recently, folks.
I have started to say this as loud as I can.
have started to say this as loud as I can. The hire of Brian Callahan cannot just be about
who the Titans bring in next. Who the
Titans bring in in free agency. Who the Titans bring in in the draft. It can't
just be about the players that they acquire. Hiring Brian Callahan and
his all-star coaching staff that he's putting together with his father now
is about maximizing the players that are already in the building as well.
The Titans need a first-round wide receiver.
Well, it would be nice if they could get a little more out of
Traylon Burks and Kyle Phillips.
That would help the wide receiver situation,
and that doesn't require additional draft picks or cap space money.
The Titans need help on the offensive line,
getting Peter Skowronski to the level we expected him to be.
Getting Dylan Radins, Nicholas Petit Ferrer
to the level that they need to be.
Jalen Duncan developing as a good backup offensive lineman.
That is just as critical
as the players that they bring in.
That's just important.
Just as important.
The Titans have talent on the team,
and they have players that have been underdeveloped,
and players that have been underutilized
on this football team that can help them.
Again, Burks, Phillips, even Chig,
Josh Wiley, Peter Skowronski, Dylan Radins,
Jalen Duncan, Nicholas Petit-Berere,
guys who have not hit their potential because the coaching that they had
under Mike Vrabel and his assistants was completely subpar.
I have continued to say that Mike Vrabel's biggest downfall,
Mike Vrabel's biggest downfall was his inability to stack his coaching staff with talent. Mike Vrabel said it himself.
He was more concerned with loyalty on a coaching staff,
and that's an ego thing, which I've been talking about for years,
than he was talent on his coaching staff.
Not Brian Callahan.
Brian Callahan went out, got Denard Wilson, went out, got Tyke Tolbert,
went out and made sure to get his father.
So we can talk about free agency. We can talk about the draft
all we want. And yes, the Titans need to bring in a ton of help.
No doubt. But maximizing the players that are underdeveloped
that are currently on this roster is absolutely
critical. Again, let's just think about the offensive line.
Let's just focus on the offensive line. Let's just focus on the offensive line
for one moment.
And why this Bill Callahan hire
was so, so important. So number
one, Peter Skowronski had a good
year last year. A good year. And the
people who take shots at Peter Skowronski
while he was surrounded by Aaron Brewer,
the worst pass-blocking center in the NFL,
and Andre Dillard, Nicholas Petit
Ferrer, Jalen Duncan, the worst pass-block in the NFL, and Andre Dillard, Nicholas Petit-Pere, Jalen Duncan,
the worst pass blocking left tackle spot in the entire NFL.
People are taking shots at Peter Skowronski.
It wasn't the best rookie season ever,
but he was far underrated by Titans fans.
All right?
But where is he going to go from here?
With Bill Callahan.
Who got the best out of Joel Batonio.
Who got the best.
Wyatt Teller.
Wyatt Teller turned into one of the best guards in the NFL.
So, Peter Skoransky.
If you are someone like me,
and you believe that Peter Skoransky can be one of the best guards in the NFL,
well, now you just. This is like Mario eating a mushroom.
All right?
Peter Skowronski just went,
I mean, this is that.
Like, have you played Mario Kart?
You got the little speed ramps.
Have you played Need for Speed 3 Underground?
Boom, you got the speed burst.
You got the NOS.
Is this fast and furious?
I don't know.
But it's all about family here.
So throw a thumbs up on the video.
Too many analogies blending together.
I'm like Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool.
Either way, we're moving on.
Peter Skowronski has the ability now to turn into what we thought he could be.
An all-pro level guard.
Nicholas Petit-Ferrer was a third-round pick
who completely regressed in his second season.
You're going to be able to get Nicholas Petit-Ferrer back to a solid level.
Jalen Duncan.
I don't think Jalen Duncan's ever going to be a solid starter in the NFL,
but if you can develop Jalen Duncan into your number one swing tackle
and he can give you valuable reps, that'll be huge.
And then Dylan Radins.
Peter Scusey. All right. There you go. You got Peter Scusey. Whatever.
If you can get Dylan Radins at the other guard spot, at right guard, and you can, Dylan Radins,
it's easy for people to say Dylan Radins is trash. He was terrible, but Dylan Radins had some really, really good
moments to end the season at the end of the year last year.
Like he played some really solid
ball at the end of the year at right tackle.
He really did. Go back and look at the stats.
Look at the pressures. Look at the sacks.
Look at the tape.
As Chad Brinker would say,
it starts with the tape and it
ends with the tape. Dylan Radins made
incredible strides last year. He with the tape. Dylan Radins made incredible strides last
year. He got much stronger and Dylan Radins has said himself getting jerked around from guard to
tackle to left to right. It's stunted his growth. Not physically because I mean he's a foot taller
than me and twice my size but for his development as a football player. You guys know what I'm
saying. So if you can get the best out of Dylan Radins,
who's still on his rookie contract,
and you can get Peter Skowronski to the level that everybody thought he could,
and you can turn Jalen Duncan into a valuable backup,
and you can get Nicholas Petit Ferrer to have improved play,
whether that be at guard, as that swing tackle,
like, this is absolutely massive,
not only for the players that you're going to bring in,
but for the players that are already there. And, let's
say this, a lot of you guys,
including myself, want Joe
Olt or Ola Fashanu
or Fashanu, I guess
is the proper pronunciation.
If you want Joe Olt,
Ola Fashanu,
Patrick Paul,
if you want one of these guys,
if you're depending on a rookie
to be your starting left tackle,
probably a good thing to have the best offensive line coach in the NFL
who just worked with Jedrick Wills.
Jedrick Wills turned into one of the best left tackles in the NFL
as a young player on his rookie contract
because Bill Callahan was coaching him up.
So, I mean, you look at the players that are already there
that need to play better.
You look at the young players that the Titans are certainly going to bring in
in the draft.
Either way, having Bill Callahan here to develop those guys,
absolutely incredible.
Like, it cannot be overstated how important this hire is.
But what I want to do is,
I want to transition into more of an overall discussion
and hammer home the point here of the fact that this is
one of the best off-seasons in Tennessee Titans history,
and it has just begun, folks. This is one of the best off-seasons in Tennessee Titans history, and it has just begun, folks.
This is one of the best roller coasters we've ever ridden,
and we're still clicking up the first hill.
All right?
Absolutely incredible.
I'm going to dive into my overall thoughts on all of this,
and who's going to be the Titans offensive coordinator?
I think I know who it's going to be at this point.
It may not be who I want it to be, but I think I do know who it's going to be.
So we're going to dive into that in just a moment.
Before we do, though, I do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by LinkedIn Jobs.

It's your team every day.
But, again, the Bill Callahan hire, absolutely huge.
Huge for not only the players the Titans are going to bring in,
but huge for the players that the Titans already have.
Bill Callahan, one of the best offensive line coaches of all time,
maybe the best position coach in the entire NFL.
Coming over to join his son.
Absolutely incredible hire.
Of course, you have Tyke Tolbert,
who I talked about on my show that came out earlier tonight.
Considered one of the best wide receiver coaches in the NFL.
20 years of experience.
And then, of course, you have Denard Wilson,
who is the hottest, most wanted, most interviewed
defensive coordinator candidate in the entire NFL this year.
Offensive line, wide receiver, secondary.
I mean, Brian Callahan is absolutely on fire.
Like, it's absolutely incredible.
And again,
these are all examples.
These are more examples
of how this is a brand new era
for the Tennessee Titans.
This is,
I've been saying it,
we are watching this team
grow up in front of our eyes,
modernizing their processes,
data analysis,
analytics,
sports science,
correct process,
going out and getting talent at position coaches.
They're not just getting guys who are loyal.
They're not just getting guys who are buddies.
All right? They're not just getting guys who are loyal. They're not just getting guys who are buddies. Alright?
They're getting the best possible coaches at each position that they possibly can.
There are relationships.
There are connections.
But, I mean, Callahan's higher in his father,
but Tyke Tolbert is 20 years older than Bill Callahan.
They aren't buddies.
Denard Wilson is not some buddy to Brian Callahan.
They aren't like best friends, like Mike Vrabel hired his guys.
No, these are talent-based hires.
We're going out and getting the most respected,
the most wanted candidates that we possibly can.
And again, this is a philosophical and a fundamental
shift in the Tennessee Titans
franchise. I go back to Burke Nihill, Tennessee Titans president
on the radio who said that this offseason
and especially a couple weeks ago when Callahan was hired,
we got the organizational announcements,
this is
a watershed moment for the Tennessee Titans.
This is a monumental moment for the franchise
where they move forward.
A momentous moment for the franchise
where we see them grow up in front of our eyes from Main Street to Wall
Street. Absolutely critical. And every time we see
a new coach hired to Brian Callahan's staff, we get
more confirmation. We get more evidence. We get more
proof that this is a new era of Tennessee Titans football.
And I've said it all week, and I'll say it again.
As a person who has been a fan of this football team for 25 years,
and known, and known, I am plugged in, guys.
If you watch my show every day, I, listen,
I am not your average fan.
I am not your average casual fan who watches.
I am addicted.
I am obsessed. I am a fanatic.
Alright? And I have watched for 25
years as this team has tried to go against the grain. They've tried to
zag when everyone else is zigging. They've tried to do it the old school way and
never modernize. To watch them do what they're doing
this offseason.
Firing Vrabel.
Not accepting good.
Restructuring the organization.
Empowering people who want to do modern things.
Hiring Brian Callahan as an offensive coach who isn't just a former player who wants to
three yards in a cloud of dust his way to nine wins.
Like,
this is just such a big moment.
And again, as I started the show with, I'll say it now,
this is how magic is made.
When you look at some of the best stories in the NFL,
this is how they start.
This is how it begins.
And it all truly started with Amy Adam Strunk looking herself in the mirror
and saying, what we're doing right now is not good enough.
This is not my father's NFL.
Amy Adam Strunk finally realized,
and I think a lot of it had to do with Rand Carthon.
She would say, Rand, at your previous jobs, at Los Angeles, at San Francisco,
how would they do this?
Well, Miss Amy, they did it this way.
Mike, Vrabel, how do you think we should do this?
We need to do it this way.
And Amy looked herself in the mirror and she said,
who do I really think is telling me the right thing?
And it was Rand Carthon.
It was Rand Carthon.
So, again, let Rand cook.
Let Brian Callahan cook, but more than anything else,
let Amy Adams Strunk cook,
because she is absolutely cooking right now.
Absolutely cooking.
Fantastic stuff.
What I want to say lastly is,
a lot of people are wondering now,
who's going to be the offensive coordinator?
I'll tell you this.
And a lot of people are given their combinations
of the first two rounds in the draft.
I'm going to say this.
Titans maximum two.
Joe Old at number seven.
Adonai Mitchell.
A.D. Mitchell from Texas at number 38.
That's my top pairing right now.
Look, we're going to get into a ton of draft stuff.
I cover 180 prospects every single year in the Locked on Titans draft preview.
But we got cap management.
We got roster cuts.
We got free agency.
Far before we get to the draft.
But I'll be doing mock draft Mondays
as soon as this coaching stuff kind of calms down
and we get things settled, alright?
But a lot of people are wondering now,
who's going to be the offensive coordinator for this team?
And I got to tell you,
I'm less concerned about that than other things.
Like, I was much more concerned about bringing Bill Callahan over
as the offensive line coach.
Because the reality is,
you got your play caller
and the guy who's going to build the offense from the ground up
in Brian Callahan.
So I'm not as concerned with offensive coordinator.
But if you ask me,
if you ask me,
who should be the offensive coordinator, who I want to be the offensive coordinator. But if you ask me, if you ask me who should be the offensive coordinator,
who I want to be the offensive coordinator,
I'm going to tell you I think it's down to two people.
Nick Holes, who is the passing game coordinator
from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
I don't think that would be a bad hire.
That would be a good hire.
I would give that a B+.
But Eric Studisville, who is an older coach, 56 years old, run game coordinator
and running back coach from the Miami Dolphins, I think him as your offensive
coordinator would absolutely be awesome because again,
you get an experienced coach
who can help Brian Callahan. Brian Callahan is 39
years old. Every single one of you in the comments right now has had a job before.
Well, most of you. I'm sure there are some kids out there who maybe haven't.
But most of you guys have had a job.
And no matter how much experience or training you have in that job,
there are things you learn in year one
that you just simply can't learn unless you do the job.
So Brian Callahan is going to have moments of adversity. Brian Callahan is
going to have peaks and valleys that he has to go through in his first year as a head coach.
To have his father, Bill Callahan, as somebody who he can
lean on, who's an experienced guy. To have Tyke Tolbert, who's
been in the NFL for 20 years and
seen everything, to have Eric Studisville, who's been in the NFL for decades, that he can go to
and lean on for advice, that's critical. Now, do I think Studisville from Miami gets the offensive
coordinator job? No. I think it's going to be Nick Holes, who was a high school teammate of Bill Callahan.
Brian Callahan.
Bill Callahan hired Nick Holes when he was at Nebraska.
There's a connection there between those families.
And I think that when you're Brian Callahan
and you're calling the plays
and you're building the offense,
you just need someone who can teach it properly to the offense
as your offensive coordinator.
And I think that Nick Holes can do that
because him and Brian Callahan are aligned.
So I would give Nick Holes a B+.
I would give Studisville an A-,
but either way, I think those are the two people
who are actually in the running for the offensive coordinator job.
So, I get it.
Liam Cohen, a lot of you guys, I just don't think that's happening.
I think it's Nick Holes or Eric Studisville.
And the way things have gone this week,
as soon as I end this show,
we'll probably get news about the offensive coordinator as well.
If it happens over the weekend, I'll be back with you guys.
But again, the biggest hire of the offseason among
position coaches, your Tennessee Titans pulled it off.
With that being said, that is going to do it
