The Tennessee Titans got multiple day one starters in the NFL draft, but everyone in
their draft class can make an immediate impact on the team.
I'm going to go pick by pick and tell you how all of these guys can help out the Titans
from the beginning.
Before we start, I do want to thank you for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first
listen each and every day.
Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for
free.
Make sure you get subscribed, stay subscribed.
It's your team every day here on the Locked on Titans podcast.
Of course, shout out to my everydayers out there
tuning in Monday through Friday
couldn't do it without you guys
let me know who you are down below
I got a great treat for my everydayers
the rest of the week
tomorrow we are going to look at the long-term impact
all of these draft guys can have for the Tennessee Titans
then we're going to take a look at
what needs still remain for the Titans
and what veteran free agents could fill those roles, especially looking at safety. And also
at the end of the week, I'm going to have a draft related mailbag. So send your questions to me at
Tic Tac Titans. Also with that over on the Tic Tac Titans film channel, I'm doing a breakdown of
every single draft prospect the Titans got. My JC Latham video is already out over there. I'm doing a breakdown of every single draft prospect the Titans got. My JC
Latham video is already out over there. I'm going to have my Tavondre Sweat video dropping at 8am
on Tuesday morning. Then we're going to do Cedric Gray on Wednesday and then hit the late round guys
the next two days. So, so much draft content coming your way from me, Tyler Rowland, your host,
25 years of Tennessee Titans fanatic and a certified film junkie, breaking down the X's and O's with you all year long.
But with that being said, let's talk about J.C. Latham.
Because it is pretty clear Latham is the easiest one to discuss at this point.
It is obvious.
He is going to be OT1 from day one.
J.C. Latham is the best offensive tackle
on the roster. It's not
even close. I mean, Nicholas Petit-Ferrer
is set to be
the other starter. Titans traded
for Leroy Watson,
of course, but that's a project for
Bill Callahan. Jalen Duncan,
you know, it's funny. Everybody's
mad at me about my take on Tavondre
Sweat, but last year, the pick that I didn't like was Jalen Duncan,
and I don't even know if Duncan's going to make the roster this year
depending on what the Titans do.
So I think it's pretty clear.
J.C. Latham is your starting offensive tackle.
Now the question is, is that right tackle?
Is that left tackle?
For me, I think the Titans have to give him this chance at left tackle.
He needs to play left tackle in year one to see if he can do it.
Right, wrong, indifferent, whatever happens,
they need to put him at left tackle.
Let him train there all throughout training camp.
Let him be there in the preseason.
Let him play there early in the season.
If it doesn't work out, then maybe you move him midway through the year
because it just is simply not working out.
But if it's not working out that well, then
we have bigger problems on our hands
in general. But for me, you're putting J.C.
Latham at left tackle early on. As
a reminder, Bill Callahan told
J.C. Latham, I think that you're
athletic enough to play left tackle.
J.C. Latham played left tackle his
entire high school career once he got to IMG.
The best high school program in the nation maybe.
It's definitely up there as one of the top ones.
So I just think it's clear that from day one,
JC Latham could be a road grader in the run game.
He can be great in the run game right away.
Like he has the skill set right now with no improvements from college.
He is going to be great in the run game. It's that passing game, and I think he can be good right away. Like he has the skill set right now with no improvements from college. He is going to be great in the run game.
It's that passing game.
And I think he can be good right away.
Now, he's got to learn to keep his butt down.
He's got to continue to refine his technique with his hands.
As I talked about on my film breakdown,
if he does shed that weight like he said he has already,
20 pounds from where he played at in Alabama,
he's going to have increased mobility.
He's going to have increased quickness.
And that's going to allow increased mobility. He's going to have increased quickness.
That's going to allow him to deal with speed better and then ultimately deal with inside moves better
because he doesn't have to overset through fear of the speed.
So to me, it's pretty clear that J.C. Latham is OT1 from day one
for the Tennessee Titans and will be a starter.
I think in his rookie year,
one for the Tennessee Titans and will be a starter. I think in his rookie year, I think he could give you like B plus level offensive tackle play. Like I don't think I would say like A minus is like
pro bowl level. A plus is all pro level. To me, if I talk about pro bowl level and all pro level,
those are two steps below. Like all pro is the best of the best. The blue chippers,
Those are two steps below.
Like all pro is the best of the best.
The blue chippers, A plus level players that are top five at their position in the entire NFL.
You look at pro bowl level though,
that's like top 10, top 12 level players.
I think JC Latham could be just a step below that
in his first year.
So we're talking about, again, a B plus level player
compared to the rest of the offensive tackles in the NFL, just a little bit below pro bowl level, which I think will be when he played left tackle and Dylan Radins when he's at left tackle and
Jalen Duncan when he's at left tackle. I mean, this is going to be a significant
upgrade even if, I mean, even if
JC Latham is B, B minus level and there's some struggles early on
which I do want to say this. Make sure that you
have patience here, okay?
If Latham comes out and he struggles in pass blocking
in the first month of the season,
I don't want to hear people freaking out
because the reality is rookie offensive linemen
often take a little bit of time to adjust to the NFL.
It is a big difference in talent,
even coming from the SEC.
Big difference in talent when you get to the NFL.
So I think even if Latham takes his lumps early on in the first month,
by the time that we get to the end of the season,
he's going to give you top 15, you know, 13, 14 level offensive tackle play.
And if things really go well and he acclimates really well right away,
then you could have yourself top 12, top 10 level offensive tackle play at the left. So I think it's pretty
clear. Latham is the easiest guy to have a discussion about in this realm. His role with
the Titans early on is defined. It is clear starting offensive tackle, best offensive tackle
on the field for the Titans, best option that they have on the
roster right now. If for some reason we see the Titans add a veteran left tackle, something like
that, then maybe they decide to kick him over to the right. I don't think that's going to happen
again. I think they need to give him his opportunity as the clear cut left tackle right away. That's
what needs to happen. So for me, I am not concerned about the switch from right tackle to left tackle,
and I think that Latham could give you, you know, top half of the league
starting left tackle play right from day one, even if there's a little bit
of lumps just because of how great he's going to be in the run game and how already
with the dropped weight, he's going to help himself with the speed in the pass game. But again, I went
over the good and the bad from JC Latham's tape
over on the Tic Tac Titans film channel.
I'm going to have the link to that film breakdown
down in the description of this podcast.
And then again, on Tuesday morning,
Tavondre Sweat's film breakdown will come out.
And I know a lot of you will be interested in seeing what I have to say
when we break down the tape of Sweat.
But speaking of Sweat,
we're going to dive into Tavondre Sweat's immediate impact possibilities
with the Titans right now.
Before we do, though, I do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you
by Monopoly Go.

Titans fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast looking at the immediate impact all of the Titans rookie class can have on the team.
We spent a full segment talking about J.C. Latham because not only was he their first round draft pick,
but he's the most important of all.
The Tennessee Titans need a starting level offensive tackle.
I don't think that they've had one in two years at this point.
So very important.
And his role is clearly defined right away.
But now we got to get into Tavondre Sweat, the day three draft prospects that the Titans
brought in because what they can provide early on may be a little more murky.
Okay, but before I get into Vondre Sweat,
I do want to thank you again for making Locked on Titans your first listen.
Remember, tomorrow we're going to look at the long-term impact
and the long-term potential of all of these draft picks.
So we're talking about how they fit right now,
but tomorrow we'll look at what they can be down the road for the Titans,
which ultimately a draft class can't truly be judged
until three or four years down the line
where we see how these guys have panned out and how they've developed.
So make sure that you don't miss that.
It's kind of the secondary part of this conversation.
But look at it to Vondre Sweat.
And what I'm going to do here is,
because everybody knows I wasn't a fan of the draft pick.
It is well documented at this point.
But for the sake of the show,
you've already heard how I feel and why I didn't like the pick.
Let's talk about if things go right.
If things go well for Tavondre Sweat.
If the pick works out, if I'm wrong, well,
number one, Devondre Sweat is going to be a monster on the first two downs, okay?
That is absolutely a capability that he can have from day one.
Stuff in the run, taking on double teams, being immovable in the run game, and clogging
up lanes, and what that does is two things.
the run game and clogging up lanes.
And what that does is two things.
Number one, that leaves Jeffrey Simmons with less double teams to deal with and more one-on-one opportunities, which Jeffrey Simmons is that all-pro,
A-plus level player, and getting him easier opportunities
is absolutely critical.
Okay, so there's that.
And then also you got to take into account what it does for the linebackers,
what it does at the second level, because the more blockers that have to take on to Vondre sweat,
the less blockers that can be on those linebackers. So a guy like Cedric Gray,
who maybe not be the strongest linebacker prospect, who maybe needs to put on a little
bit of weight, needs to work on stacking and shedding when blocks get on him.
That would be very helpful
for him. A guy like Kenneth Murray, I'll be honest, Kenneth Murray is like a six foot three
David Long. Like he needs to get downhill, play with aggression, play with instincts,
fly through holes, penetrate downhill. Like that's what Kenneth Murray needs to do.
He's not going to be able to do that if there are blockers on him right away.
So giving Kenneth Murray the room to use that speed and that dog mentality
and that downhill force, letting Kenneth Murray be able to do that is critical.
All right?
So what the Titans want is they want defensive linemen
that are going to keep offensive linemen off their linebackers.
That is always the goal.
And Tavondre Sweat, especially on the first two downs, can absolutely do that.
Also, in the Titans' base defense, whether it be a 4-3, whether it be a 3-4,
he could be a 3-4 nose tackle, he could be a shade guy in a 4-3,
whatever the Titans decide to do on base defense.
And although base defense isn't as common,
when people ask a lot of questions about are they a 3-4 or are they a 4-3,
to me it's kind of pointless because 60% to 75% of defensive snaps in the NFL
are in nickel with four down linemen, two linebackers, and five defensive backs.
So are you a 4-3? Are you a 3-4?
I don't really know.
You're a nickel defense in the NFL if you're playing in the NFL. So I think in those four-man fronts,
Devondre Sweat can be that shade nose tackle that plays, you know, over the center, between the
center and the guard on either side, depending on what they want to do. And I think he could do that
right away. So he could be a starter in their base defense. Even if they're a nickel, he could be a two down guy who's a run stuffer
early on. He can rotate in on third downs.
Like I don't think he's a guy who just cannot play on third down. I'm going to go
over it in the film breakdown that I put out on Tuesday morning, but he does have
great hands. He's got great hands that knock down
offensive line hands. He uses a good swipe, a good
swim. He does a good job with those things.
There is some potential there on third down, but I just think early
on his immediate impact, he's going to be a guy who you want to rotate in. Number one,
you're always going to have Jeffrey Simmons on the field on third downs. No question about it.
Arden Key is a guy.
You like to get him with his length and his speed.
You like to get Arden Key rushing from the inside,
like he had success in San Francisco and Jacksonville.
So there are going to be snaps that are taken up by Arden Key being on the inside.
Also, Sebastian Joseph Day.
They're going to use him on the inside as well.
So if Tavondre Sweat can kind of be in that rotation early on,
I think that would be great value
for the Titans. Basically,
he could be T. Air Tart
in year one. Like,
immediately, he could be as good as T. Air Tart
was in year one.
Two to three sacks, run
stuffing ability out of the nose.
I think, right away,
he could be a T. Air Tart. It's about
what he could be if things go right,
which we'll talk about tomorrow, long term,
that is what's really enticing at the end of the day about his skill set.
But right away, he could be a tierre tart or better
and, you know, give you that level of production.
Cedric Gray, though, at linebacker, really loves Cedric Gray.
Maybe my favorite value pick of the entire draft
obviously I like Latham the most
because of what he can be and what he can do
but Gray may be like my favorite pick
you know if that makes sense to you guys
right away he's going to be in the linebacker rotation
because he's good in coverage
former safety
great instincts
good at dropping into
zone, understands route concepts. He was a guy who was on Drake Mays. I heard this on the OTP,
so to give them credit. He was on Drake Mays' 7-on-7 team as an offensive player. He wanted
to be a wide receiver. He got moved to defense, was a safety, and then ultimately became a
linebacker. So you see that understanding in zone coverage,
and you see that ability in pass coverage right away.
So from day one, what I know is, whether he's a starter or not,
he could be in the linebacker rotation.
Think if you have Kenneth Murray and Jack Gibbons on early downs.
And then when third down comes, or second and long comes,
you take Gibbons off the field, you bring in Cedric Gray to be next to Kenneth Murray
or James Williams for that matter.
And then on third down, if you're in a dime package
where you have six defensive backs and only one linebacker,
Cedric Gray can be that guy.
He can be that guy.
So right away, I think he's capable of being in the rotation at linebacker
and having a defined role as a coverage guy.
Think about like Jayon Brown.
I think he could play the Jayon Brown role
before Jayon was a full-time starter.
But also from day one, he can compete with Jack Gibbons
to steal that other starting linebacker spot.
And I would not be shocked if he won it outright.
Okay?
So all of that ability there,
playing on nickel, playing in dime,
being the third down linebacker That is all possible right away
If he does even better he could be the starter right away next to kenneth murray
Like so I think all of that is very possible and then also
Special teams
He's going to be a guy who should be able to contribute on special teams right away. Now, if he wins that starting linebacker job,
he probably won't be asked as much to do things on special teams,
but being on the punt coverage team, running on kickoff coverage,
being somebody who, like I said, can be there on third downs,
can be your nickelbacker, be your dimebacker,
but can also potentially win a starting role.
He's just got a lot to offer to the team,
and that's why I was so excited about that pick.
But we got other guys to talk about.
We got four more late-round draft picks to go into,
but that's the top three and how they think
they can immediately impact the Tennessee Titans.
Let me know your expectations for these guys
that we've talked about so far down below.
Now, let's talk about the rest of day three.
We've talked about so far down below.
Now, let's talk about the rest of day three.
Before we do, though, do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook.

It's FanDuel, America's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast,
looking at the immediate impact that the Titans draft class can have in year one.
We're going to talk about the rest of day three to cap off the show. Before we do,
thank you again for making Locked on Titans
your first listen.
Pair it with the Tic Tac Titans YouTube
channel. All of my film breakdowns
on all of these draft prospects are going to be
out this week. Latham was out on
Monday. Sweat is on Tuesday.
Gray is on Wednesday. I'll be doubling
up with the other guys
on Thursday and Friday as well.
You're not going to want to miss any of that.
Again, the link to the YouTube channel is down in the description of this video.
But with that being said, we got to talk about the next pick for the Titans,
and that is Jarvis Brownlee Jr. out of Louisville.
Look, number one right away, he's CB4.
You obviously have LeJus Sneed. You have
Chido Owuze on the outsides, and then you have Roger McCreary as your starting nickel, but no
matter what happens, there's an injury here. There's an injury there. Jarvis Brownlee is going
to be able to play right away. He could play on the outside if one of those guys get hurt or need
to take a couple plays off or whatever. He can also
play on the inside and back up Roger McCreary. Where I see him on the depth chart right away
though, he is obviously Roger McCreary's number one backup. And if the Titans decide to go dime
with four cornerbacks instead of three safeties and three cornerbacks, they go four cornerbacks
and then two deep safeties, then Bramley's going to be on the field right away as a physical guy who can play in the opposite slot of Roger McCreary.
But, again, I think if one of the outside guys were to miss any time,
Jarvis Bramley would immediately go there as well.
Now, he's not going to fare as well on the outside in the NFL
because he's only 5'10", but he can do that job. And that's critical because at the end in the NFL because he's only 5'10". But, but, he can do that job.
And that's critical because at the end of the day,
do you want Eric Guerrero out there?
Do you want Trey Avery out there?
Do you want Caleb Farley out there?
If we're honest with ourselves, it is pretty clear
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. is the fourth best cornerback on the team right away.
But outside of cornerback, he can truly be a special teams dynamo.
This is a guy who loves playing special teams.
He wants to play special teams.
He enjoys it.
He loves hitting.
He loves football.
So he's going to come in right away and probably be a gunner on punt coverage.
The guy on the outside lined up where wide receivers normally are
who runs down the field and gets to the ball carrier first,
that is what Jarvis Lee Brownlee, Jarvis Brownlee, Jarvis Lee Brownlee,
that was funny, Jarvis Brownlee is going to do right away for the Tennessee Titans.
And again, and again, in dime, if the Titans want to go with four cornerbacks
instead of three safeties, he is going to be on the field right away,
and that is going to be matchup-based.
So they have the flexibility to do that and dime if they need to
because they actually have four cornerbacks that they trust.
So that's critical.
That's why I continue to say that the Titans needed to take a cornerback
in this draft.
People were like, oh, they got Sneed.
They got Awuzy.
They got Roger.
Why would they need it?
Because they didn't have anybody else. Okay? So, like the pick. Love the pick. That's his role in
year one. Now we get to what seems to be everyone's least favorite pick of the draft. I don't feel
this way, obviously. You guys know my least favorite pick of the draft. But Jaquan Jackson,
wide receiver out of Tulane. And look, when I talk about the Titans having multiple starters from this draft class, Jackson
is one of those guys.
Maybe not offense, maybe not defense, but special teams.
And this is something that Anthony Robinson and Rand Carthon, when they did their press
conference after the draft, this is something that they harped on a lot, is that Jaquan Jackson is a dual threat returner.
He can be a punt returner, but he can also be a kick returner.
And with the new kick return rules and how they're going to do it,
he can have a major impact.
If that's something where people start ripping off big returns all the time because of the change,
Jaquan Jackson is going to be one of those guys who can do that.
He's also someone who can rotate in on third downs.
We have been disappointed by Kyle Phillips for years.
For years.
And we said, there's nobody else on this roster
who can provide what Kyle Phillips provide.
Quickly separate with good quickness and short area burst.
Well, now the Titans do have someone else on the roster who can do those things,
and it's Jaquan Jackson.
So, I like him as someone who can rotate in on third downs as a slot for Kyle Phillips.
Kyle Phillips has not been able to stay healthy,
so Jaquan Jackson would immediately add value there.
Jaquan Jackson could beat out Kyle Phillips for the starting slot role right away. Like Like that could happen. I'm not going to count on that, but that could happen.
So I like that. And even if that doesn't happen again, he can rotate in every couple of drives
and it can be used as a gadget player. You want to do a jet sweep. The Titans want to do some
stuff like what Miami is doing with cheap motion to get a guy running immediately, right away.
Use him in the backfield.
I think they can hand the ball off to him in some shotgun situations
just to get him out in space and let him create.
He isn't going to break tackles and run through contact,
but he can create yards after catch because of the speed.
And he's not just quick.
We think about slot receivers.
You think about just quick.
No, he's got deep speed too.
The Titans are going to add more verticality to the slot position
in Brian Callahan's offense.
And Jaquan Jackson gives you the ability to take advantage of that
on a slot fade, getting down the field.
He can do those things on a quick inside post to beat a split safety look.
He can do those things.
It's not just quickness.
He's got deep speed as well.
But now we get into the seventh round picks.
And we have James Williams from Miami.
Six foot four. Again, he was a former safety,
but he's going to be a linebacker for the Titans. They've already talked about it. But again,
matchups. Matchups is what's key here. And I
think the Titans, if they go, we talked about four cornerbacks
in dime. So two deep safeties, four cornerbacks,
your four down line men, a linebacker, they could do that.
Or let's say the team that they're going against
has a really good receiving tight end. Okay. Or what you could do is you could
have James Williams function
as a second linebacker
in nickel, where it's
him, Cedric Gray, two
safeties, three corners.
You could run dime, where you have
two safeties, a linebacker,
three corners, and then James
Williams. And James Williams basically
fun, like, one game, if they have
a bigger slot receiver or a tight end,
they like to flex out.
You can have James Williams and dime.
If they have a smaller,
quicker wide receiver or just a wide receiver in general,
you could use Jarvis Brownlee and dime again.
It's all about creating matchups and packages within the defense.
Also,
I think that Williams is a guy who's going to be able to blitz a ton
because of his size and his physicality,
which is going to allow him to play more in those heavier packages as well
if the Titans want to do that.
So I think being a matchup guy and having a specific role on certain weeks,
it won't be every week.
It won't be every week, but certain weeks, he could be a valuable player.
Obviously, if you're getting drafted in the seventh round,
you better be a beast on special teams.
Like, you better be a beast.
So, he's going to have to do that.
That's a given.
And then, ultimately, more depth at the linebacker spot.
Now, you have Kenneth Murray, a great athlete.
You have Otis Reese, a great athlete.
Both guys with good size and good athleticism.
You add in James Williams.
Now, you have even more depth. We all
want Otis Reese to do well, but if he doesn't,
James Williams
could immediately take that spot as the
backup to Kenneth Murray. So, linebacker
depth, special teams help,
a matchup nightmare in dime
week-to-week basis. Okay?
Finally,
you have Jalen
Harrell from Michigan,
and to me, he's a special teams only guy right away.
I think he's going to need some major development with his technique.
He's going to need to put on some more weight
before he's somebody who's in the pass rush rotation.
You're going to have Key.
You're going to have Landry.
You're going to have Weaver.
I would bet on Caleb Murphy to be more involved in the pass rush right now.
I think the Titans need to add an edge in veteran free agency,
but we'll talk about that later in the week.
But right away, Jalen Harrell is going to come in.
He is going to be a big special teams contributor.
A big time.
That is where he's going to earn a roster spot is with special teams.
But also, he's going to be part of a roster battle.
I'm not going to rule him out as someone who couldn't beat out Caleb Murphy,
but right away he's going to add competition to Caleb Murphy,
add competition to Thomas Rush,
some of these guys on the low end of the depth chart,
and with his ability to play special teams,
Caleb Murphy isn't really much of a special teams player.
They tried, but that's not his area of expertise.
Thomas Rush will do that,
but I don't know if he's
good enough to necessarily be on the varsity roster. So I think that Harold definitely has
an opportunity to carve out a roster spot, but it's going to be if he impresses on special teams,
and that'll be his role right away. But with that being said, let me know what roles you envision
for these rookies down below. That is going to do it for me today, folks. I'll be back with you guys
tomorrow to talk about the long-term impact these rookies could have. That is going to do it for me today, folks. I'll be back with you guys tomorrow to talk about the long-term
impact these rookies could have
on the Tennessee Titans. Hopefully,
we get a veteran signing at
freaking safety soon, and then I can break
that down as well. But with that
being said, again, that's going to do it for me. As always,
I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this
was Locked on Titans.
