Episode Date: February 3, 2025OFFSEASON ROAD MAP WEEK: The Tennessee Titans have a ton of roster decisions to make including whether or not to trade their star player Jeffery Simmons. Simmons isn't the only trade candidate the Tit...ans could look to move though. Harold Landry, Treylon Burks and Will Levis could be options to be moved as well. It isn't just trades, the Titans will need to make a few roster cuts before the season and Kenneth Murray is a prime candidate to be released. Finally, the Titans need to take their medicine with the contracts of Calvin Ridley, L'Jarius Sneed and other recent signings. They still have enough cap space to operate how they need to. Should the Tennessee Titans trade Jeffrey Simmons?
It's a question that they have to ask.
I'll explain why on today's edition of Locked on Titans.

It is day two of off season roadmap week on today's show.
We're going to go over roster management decisions for the Titans.
What is their salary cap situation?
What will it be going into free agency?
Should they cut Harold Landry?
Should they cut Amani Hooker?
Should they trade Jeffrey Simmons?
Should they trade Harold Landry? So many questions to ask in so many different roster moves
that the Titans can make.
I'm going to go through each of those questions
and tell you what I think the Tennessee Titans
should do this off season.
Before we get into all of it,
do want to thank you for making a Locked On Titans

Again, it's day two of off-season roadmap week.
Tomorrow is day three.
I'm gonna have a mock free agency
where I go over the signings that I would make
for the Tennessee Titans.
Thursday will be a seven round mock draft that I do myself.
And then Friday we'll recap all of the action
that we had this week.
And what I think is the perfect Tennessee Titans off season, but moving
into the roster management questions here, should the Tennessee Titans
trade Jeffrey Simmons?
I said during the season, this was not a good time to make that move.
You don't trade Jeffrey Simmons during the season.
You're not going to get the most capital that you possibly can
and it's going to be difficult to have as many suitors as you want because there's limited cap
space during the year. But now you're into the all season. The Tennessee Titans need to have this
question. Is Jeffrey Simmons going to be the elite player that we hope that he can be? Then he's
shown that he's capable of being by the time we turn this program around.
The answer for the Tennessee Titans might be yes, it might be no. That is the question.
But you have to look at that and weigh that against what can we possibly get for Jeffrey Simmons.
In my opinion, I think the best that you could get for Jeffrey Simmons is a late first round pick.
Think about a team like maybe the Green Bay Packers
who pick in the back half of the twenties in the NFL draft.
Like think about anywhere from 20 to 32.
I think you could get maybe a high second round pick,
maybe multiple second round picks if you'd rather have that.
But I don't think that you're going to get like,
Miles Garrett was just placed on,
or just made a trade request.
Jeffrey Simmons isn't gonna get you anywhere near what you're getting for Miles Garrett was just placed on, or just made a trade request. Jeffrey Simmons isn't going to get you anywhere near what you're getting for
Miles Garrett.
There are two different levels of players from the elite best in the NFL to
Jeffrey Simmons, who I think is in that second tier of superstar players in the
NFL.
So to me, when you look at what you could get back for Jeffrey Simmons, and
then you look at the savings, if you for Jeffrey Simmons. And then you look at the savings.
If you traded Jeffrey Simmons,
you would save about $8.4 million,
but you would still have $14.4 million in dead cap.
And look, I know that getting any draft capital back
makes sense, but I do have to point out
that Mike Borganzi, when he was hired
as the new general manager for the Tennessee Titans,
literally talked about the fact that Jeffrey Simmons and Harold Landry, homegrown stars, are perfect examples of leaders who are
more loyal to their organization because they were drafted, they were developed, and they were paid
by one team. They were totally through the process with one team. So I don't think that
the Tennessee Titans will actually be interested in trading Jeffrey Simmons or trading Harold Landry because they are
examples of exactly what the Tennessee Titans want to build in Tennessee. So
with that in mind, I think their impact on the culture and their impact on the
locker room outweighs what the Titans could get in return. So I'm gonna say no
to a Jeffrey Simmons trade into a
Harold Landry trade. I do not think those are moves that the Tennessee
Titans should make. You could get rid of them for draft picks, but I think
that the loss of them as symbols in the organization and the players that
they are on the field for a Titans defense that looks good. Brian
Callahan wants to win. Mike Gorgonzi wants to win. And I think the Titans
in two or three years, probably two years could turn this thing around and that looks good. Brian Callahan wants to win. Mike Gorgonzi wants to win. And I think the Titans in
two or three years, probably two years, could turn this thing around and be a playoff contender. So
I'm not going to get rid of Jeffrey Simmons. I'm not going to get rid of Harold Landry for,
I think Harold Landry only get you a fourth round pick back. So I'm just not interested in the net
outcome of those two trades. What I will tell you is though,
Traylon Burks is a guy who I would trade in a second.
Okay, I would trade in absolute second.
And as a matter of fact, in this off season roadmap,
this mock off season for the Titans,
I am trading Traylon Burks.
I'm gonna trade Traylon Burks for a sixth round pick.
I would take a seventh round pick as well,
because either way Traylon Burks is not going round pick. I would take a seventh round pick as well, because either way, Traylon Burks is not going to be
on the roster next year.
Now, if you cut Traylon Burks outright
and you just cut him, it's $4.5 million in dead cap.
You get no savings.
It's just 4.5 million dead cap.
He's off the books.
You accept it, you eat the 5 million,
but if you trade him, you don't have to pay his salary,
which is $2.6 million. So I'm trading Traylon Burks for a conditional sixth round pick,
or conditional seventh, which could become a sixth round pick with play time.
And I'm saving $2.6 million and getting Traylon Burks off this roster at his time to move on.
So that's a yes for a trade to trailing berks for a
Seventh round pick i'll take a sixth round pick with playtime if i can get that in there and then finally i want to talk about will levis
because
I think that there are very few scenarios where will levis is back on the titans
And the best thing for the franchise moving forward,
if they have truly given up on Will Levis,
which I think they have,
it's time to move him somewhere else.
Brian Callahan already talked this off season
about how Will Levis does not fit what he wants to do.
He talked about how his offense is not a fit for Will Levis.
So they were trying to adjust it and make it more comfortable
for what Will Levis does well with the deep passing game and the long developing play action stuff.
But Brian Callahan talked about how he wants precision timing passing.
Brian Callahan wants to be a spread west coast offense, not a play action offense like what
Will Levis is going to thrive in.
So with the lack of fit and the available options for the Titans, whether
it be the quarterback in the draft, whether it be a veteran bridge quarterback
with a new young backup, I think there are so many options out there for the
Tennessee Titans to move on from Will Levis that I think that they do trade.
Well, let us now here is the thing.
It's only going to save the Titan $600,000 if they trade them.
I think based on what we've seen recently with guys who were
quarterback picks in the first three rounds who flunked out, think about Kenny Pickett or Sam Howell
or Desmond Ritter. I think you could get a fourth or a fifth round pick for Will Levis. Think of the
Titans traded Will. Think of Las Vegas missed out on a quarterback in the draft. They need a
quarterback. You know the connection between Will Levesse and Tom Brady.
So you trade Will Levesse to the Raiders for pick number 73
and the Titans send Levesse and 119.
So Levesse and a fifth for a third round pick
from Las Vegas.
I think that would be a fair trade.
And even if you don't want to do that move
or you can't do that move, again, I think you could get a fourth or
a fifth round pick for Will Levis with two more years of rookie contract.
Think about if the Raiders missed out on a quarterback in the first couple of
rounds, Levis is a good fallback option for a team at the end of day two or the
beginning of day three to make a move. So I think you could get a fourth or
fifth round pick
maybe even something more creative like Kenny Pickett went for uh, it was a third round pick
for Kenny Pickett and a fourth I believe was the deal that went down for the Eagles. So or Kenny
Pickett and a or a third and a fifth for Kenny Pickett and a fourth something like that the
Titans could do to move their fourth round pick or get back into the top 100.
I think that would make a lot of sense.
So that's a trade I would make, but I'm not going to make it right now in February
and March, I'm going to wait until the draft to see if that materializes or after the
draft to see if that materializes going forward, but trading Traylen Burks, holding
on to Jeffrey Simmons and Harold Landry, looking to trade Will Levis, but only at the right time where I can extract maximum
value.
But with that being said, who needs to be cut from the Tennessee Titans?
Kenneth Murray, I've had enough.
Do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by PrizePix.
The big game is almost here and there's no better way to make it even more exciting than
with prize picks.
The best place for daily fantasy sports with over 10 million members and billions and winnings
awarded prize picks makes it fun and simple to get in on the action.
Here's how it works.
You pick more or less on at least two player projections.
And if you're right, you can win up to 1000 times your cash.
Price picks even has a free pick for the big game where Patrick
Mahomes only needs to throw for one yard for you to win.
So this week, for example, I'm going to do more on Travis Kelsey rushing yards.
I'm going to pair that with more for Patrick Mahomes to throw for more than one yard.
And if both of those hit, I can make a safe and fast withdrawal in as little as 15 minutes.

["Titan's Theme Song"]
Titans fans, let's continue day two of off season roadmap week. Day one, we went over my cap or my, my re-signings for in-house free agents. Today, I'm looking at trade options.
We're going to talk cap cuts. We're also going to talk some guys that Titans just need to
take their medicine on and then evaluate how much cap space the Titans have moving into mock free agency on tomorrow's show.
And then my seventh round mock draft will be on Thursday's show.
And then a recap at the end of the week.
But we kept Jeffrey Simmons. We kept Harold Landry. No trade there.
We traded Traylon Burks. We're going to trade Will Levis as soon as the draft rolls around.
I'll save that for Thursday.
But looking at cap cut candidates for the Titans, the number one cap cut
candidate is Harold Landry.
No doubt.
Now I said, I'm not going to trade Harold Landry earlier, and that should
probably tip you off to how I feel here.
Harold Landry would give you $13 dollars in dead cap but it would be 10 million
dollars in savings. So the Titans have about 50 million dollars in cap space
going into the offseason getting an extra 10 million. The problem is the
Titans are so bad on the edge you can't afford to get rid of Harold Landry and
as I talked about in the first segment, Mike Borganzi talked about how
important it is to have guys like Jeffrey Simmons and Harold Landry who were
drafted, developed and paid by the Tennessee Titans.
So I agree with Borganzi that those things are pillars in a locker room and
the Titans can't lose their way entirely.
So am I going to cut Harold Landry to save $10 million when the Titans have $50 million
and a big need on the edge already?
No, I'm not going to do that.
Harold Landry is the consummate professional.
He works hard.
He's always prepared.
He's a versatile guy.
He lives for the team.
He breathes for the team.
He produces as well.
Maybe he's not an elite pass rusher like Miles Garrett and Nick Bosa and guys like that.
But Harold Landry is a very good player.
He's not the top tier edge that we need, but you draft Abdul Carter, you have Abdul Carter, you have Harold Landry, you have Devondre Sweat, you have Jeffrey Simmons, you have Sebastian Joseph Day, you have Arden Key as a tertiary rusher that can be a part of rush packages.
Now you really have something cooking.
Now you have something because you have the top tier pass rusher
and Harold Landry's role is better.
So I am going to keep Harold Landry around.
I am not going to cut Harold Landry and leave $13 million of dead money
just to save me $10 million.
It's simply not worth it.
Now I did consider a restructure of Harold Landry's contract.
Harold Landry's salary, actual salary this year, not his salary cap hit,
which is $24 million, but his actual salary is 17 million.
You could take 10 million off his salary, turn it into signing bonus, and then
spread that 10 million out over the next two years or so.
You could add a void year on the back of Harold Landry's contract.
You could do that, but all you're doing is you're kicking money down the road.
You're kicking the can down the road is the saying I was looking for that $10 million
that you take off Harold Landry's salary this year may save you $7.5 million, $7 million
in salary cap space right now,
but then the additional money that you're going to push into the next two years,
that's going to be dead money if you want to get rid of Harold Landry next year.
And Harold Landry's dead cap next year is like $13 million.
So now you're looking at $20 million next year,
rather than just eating it this year and dealing with it right now.
I don't want to kick that money down the road.
This is a good year for the Titans in my opinion,
to really take their medicine on some contracts that they probably won't want
going forward. Don't restructure them. Don't change them.
We'll talk more about that in a second, but for Harold Landry, that's how I feel.
We're just going to leave the $24 million cap hit on the books and accept what
it is and let it be rather than pushing our
problems into the future.
This is a year where the Titans need to take that medicine.
That's why I go to a Monty hooker and look, a Monty hooker is $11 million on the cap this
year.
If you cut him, you could save eight and a half million dollars and you only have two
and a half dead.
All right. That's good savings for the Titans.
That is good.
You save eight and a half million dollars to cut a Monte hooker.
It's a Monte hooker worth $11 million on the cap.
That's quite a debate.
But for me, what are you going to do to replace him?
This is how I felt when people brought up the nonsense last year, last off season,
a cut to Monte hooker, aty Hooker is a really good safety.
Is he a Pro Bowl level safety?
Is one of the best safeties in the league?
Is he Kyle Hamilton?
Is he Xavier McKinney?
Like, is he Kirby Joseph?
No, he's not those guys, but he's not getting paid.
Like those guys are going to be paid 20 million some dollars a year.
For 11 million dollars, a Monty Hooker is a very good value,
and the Titans should not cut him.
And I'm not cutting him now, Kenneth Murray, on the other hand, 9.9 million
on the salary cap, I am, there is no world, there is no earth, there is no
timeline, no multiverse where I'm paying $10 million on the salary cap for
Kenneth Murray, not a chance.
It's only 2.5 million in dead money.
If you cut them and you save $7 million, give me my $7.4 million
dollars in salary cap, uh, salary cap space back.
I can find a linebacker much cheaper than Kenneth Murray.
That will be just as good.
If not better, I would rather play Cedric gray and James Williams next year for less than a million
than pay Kenneth Murray, 10 million.
He is as replaceable of a linebacker as you could possibly find.
Does he have traits that make him a fit?
Did he possess good leadership qualities?
Sure, but his play on the field is absolutely not worth $10 million on the salary cap.
A Monty Hooker is not $1 million more valuable than Kenneth Murray.
The gap is much larger.
So I'm cutting Kenneth Murray and I'm saving $7.4 million.
Then we go to Arden Key, who I think is another cap cut candidate here.
$9.3 million on the salary cap.
Is Arden Key worth that?
No, but here's the problem.
It would be $6.9 million in dead cap.
So he's only getting paid 9 million.
If you cut him, you only save 2.4.
At the end of the day, Arden Key is a good third rusher.
He's a good situational rusher.
He's just not a starting or high level edge rusher.
Honestly, Arden Key in one-on-one pass rush situations had
better plays than Harold Landry last year. Landry was able to clean up with his
effort and his finish and his motor, but Arden Key is better as a one-on-one in a
phone booth, use a move to beat a guy. So I'm keeping Arden Key. I'm not cutting
Arden Key to save $2.4 million. It's simply not worth it. Let's get Abdul
Carter in here to go with Harold Landry
and Arden Key. And now you actually have a pretty good edge rush group. So I'm not cutting Arden Key
to save $2.4 million dollars. Simply not worth it. And then finally, Nicholas Petit-Ferrer,
$3.5 million dollars on the salary cap, only $280,000 in dead cap. Get out of here. I am driving the car to Nashville to pick up NPF,
to drive them to the airport. Give me my $3.2 million in salary cap space. So we kept Harold
Landry. We kept Imani Hooker. We kept Arden Key. We cut Kenneth Murray. We cut Nicholas Patifereir.
And we saved $10.6 million in salary cap space.
So where are the Titans at in salary cap space right now?
How much salary cap space are they going to have going into free agency?
I did resign some players yesterday.
We'll talk about all that right now.

["Titan's Theme Song"]
Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
Again, day two of off season roadmap week.
Yesterday we did the off season schedule for the Titans.
We did the in-house free agents that the Titans had, and I re-signed a couple of those guys.
I'm going to add that into my calculation that we're about to do right now.
But on today's show, of course, we did trade targets for the Titans and candidates.
We did cap cut candidates who I would cut and who I wouldn't.
Now I want to talk about how the Titans need to kind of take their medicine and
who I resigned and the salary cap situation all as one conversation.
Before I get into it.
Thank you again for making locked on Titans.
Your first listen tomorrow.
Mock fantasy, uh, mock free agency, Thursday mock seven round draft Friday
recap and everything from this week.
But with luxurious need, she, no, they was yeah.
Calvin Ridley, Lloyd Cushionberry.
I know that some of you out there are going to say, you know,
they got to get rid of them.
They got to trade them.
They got to do what they can to move on from those guys.
It just simply isn't going to happen.
This goes back to what I talked about with Harold Landry earlier.
There is an element of this year where the Titans just need to take their medicine.
They're not going to be able to flip this thing overnight.
There isn't one move that they can make to change the team from being a
terrible team to a good team.
Again, I know that people are going to say the quarterback, Jane Daniels,
we can have our, I don't know that I believe that.
And this is my, my mock off season.
Right?
So I think the Titans need to,
and I'm going to just take the medicine.
Legerius need, if you cut Legerius need,
it would cost you $12 million of extra salary cap space.
Like on top of what you owe for Legerius need right now,
it would cost you $12 million more to cut him.
It would be $35 million in dead cap.
Cheeto.
Cheeto would be $12 million in dead cap.
It would only save you $2.5 million to cut Cheeto.
It just doesn't make any sense for 2 million.
Why?
Calvin Ridley would literally lose you $9 million in cap space
additional on what you're paying. It would be $37 million in dead cap. Lloyd Cushinberry would lose
you 5 million extra. The Titans have 50 million in cap space. If you cut Lloyd Cushinberry,
it goes down to 45 million
because the money you owe him next year
comes up into this year.
So it would be $19 million in dead cap for the Titans.
They would lose 5 million to cut Lloyd Cushingberry
after his Achilles tear.
It just doesn't make sense.
So it sucks that the Titans made these big splash moves
last year with these big contracts and it didn't work out for him.
You know, Snead and Kush had major injuries and Calvin Ridley was good.
Cheeto was injured all of the year.
Like, but you got to take your medicine and just eat this because there is no way.
For you to do anything with these contracts to help yourself.
So just eat what it is.
And if you want to get rid of these contracts to help yourself. So just eat what it is.
And if you want to get rid of these guys after this year, after two
seasons with the team, then it'll be more digestible to get rid of them
and what their dead cap would be and how would it impact your salary cap.
So I'm not making any significant moves with Snead, Cheeto, Ridley and Kush.
And again, the Titans were overly aggressive last year in free agency and it
didn't work.
By the time that the roster is good enough for the Titans to win games, some of these
players probably won't be on the team anymore.
So you're really burning the cash.
So if you're the Titans again this year, just be smart.
Don't get too crazy in free agency like you did before.
Don't make these restructures and make trades and do all this crazy stuff to try to save yourself more cap space right now.
You don't need to for this year. Don't prioritize this year and this season.
Prioritize the future.
And that means just taking your medicine right now and not trying to kick the can
down the road with restructure and contracts, just not what you need to do.
So.
With that being said, the Tennessee Titans currently right now in in real time as we speak, have $49,787,053 in cap space, according to spottrack.com.
We traded Traylon Burks to save $2.6 million. We cut Kenneth Murray to save $7.4 million.
That's $10 million for those keeping track.
We cut Nicolas Petit-Ferrer to save $3.2 million.
So that's $13 million that we've saved with the moves that we made today.
We could trade Will Levis here in a month or so during the draft and save an additional $600,000,
but that doesn't matter for our calculation purposes,
it's 600,000.
So we saved a little over $13 million
with the moves that we've made today.
You add that to the $50 million in cap,
and again, it's 49.7, but for math purposes,
for simplicity, we call it 50 million.
We have 50 million in cap space.
We just saved ourselves $13 million in additional cap space.
So that's 63, 62.
We'll say 62 million dollars.
All right.
The Titans have $62 million in cap right now after our moves.
Yesterday, I brought some people back.
Okay.
I brought NWI back for three years, 20 million
with $4 million as a cap hit in year one.
So that's 4 million.
I brought back Tyler Boyd.
Last year, Tyler Boyd got $2.4 million against the cap.
I do the same thing this year, 2.4 million against the cap.
So that's 6.4.
Then I brought back Daniel Brunskill who got 3.8 last year.
I'll give them 3.5 this year to bring them back as a depth
interior offensive lineman.
So now we're looking at, you know, three and two and four, plus a
little change on the back end.
We're looking at about $10 million that we're giving out to re-sign these players.
Stonehouse, I'd say about $3 million per season.
Nick Folt got $3.5 million last year.
I'll give him that again.
So now with the special teams, we're up to about $16 million.
Quandre Diggs was $3 million last year. I brought Quandre Diggs was three million last year.
I brought Quandre Diggs back.
I'll give him three million again, about 19 million.
And then you got Sebastian Joseph Day,
got four million last year.
I'm bringing him back for the same amount, $4 million.
And then Darrell Baker Jr.
who played really good for the Titans last year,
could be a depth corner.
I'll give him the veteran minimum, a little over a million dollars to bring him back.
So basically $24 million I used to bring back guys from last year's roster.
Could be a little less than that with how we manipulate the salary cap, but it'd be
about 22 to $24 million that I'm using to bring back guys.
So we had $50 million in cat space.
I added 13 with the moves I made on today's show with Burks trade,
Kenneth Murray, NPF being cut.
That got us to $63 million, $62 to $63 million.
And then I used $24 million to bring back some guys.
four million dollars to bring back some guys. So quick back there we'll say 63 minus 24 brings us to 39 million. So the Titans will have basically 39 and I want to mention that when the Titans
signed the eight players that I brought back NWI Boyd, Brunskill, Stonehouse,
Folk, Diggs, Sebastian Joseph Day, Darrell Baker Jr., and Morgan Cox too. We'll throw him in there
for the veteran minimum. But when the Titans bring back those players, right now they only have 48
players counting against their total 51. Only your top 51 players count against the salary cap during the off season.
So when the Titans add those players, it's going to knock some players out.
So again, we're looking at $40 million of cap space heading into free agency after bringing back nine players from last year's team,
including NWI, Tyler Boyd, Daniel Brunskill, Stonehouse, Folk, Diggs,
bringing back those guys, cutting Kenneth Murray, cutting Nicholas Petit-Ferrer,
trading Traylon Burks. All of those moves, we have $40 million heading into free agency.
So keep that in mind as we go into my mock free agency tomorrow. Make sure you get subscribed, stay subscribed. That's going to do it for me today, folks.
As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland,
and this was Locked on Titans.
