Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Justin Jefferson Trade Insanity, Top-Tier Backup QB Options & No Malik Willis
Episode Date: February 26, 2024The Tennessee Titans are in the market for a WR1 and Justin Jefferson's name has been floating around, but a trade for Jefferson does not make any sense for the Titans who need to build up there team ...over time, not try a microwave move. Also, the Titans MUST prioritize backup quarterbacks in free agency and there are plenty of names that make sense like Gardner Minshew and Jacoby Brisset. While they may not be as enticing, other options like Josh Dobbs and Carson Wentz could also make sense. Finally, no matter what the Titans do, it is time to move on from Malik Willis, who doesn't fit with the Titans current situation. The Tennessee Titans should not trade for Justin Jefferson.
I'm going to go over a mock trade and explain why I think it's ridiculous.
Also, we are going to start the 2024 Locked On Titans free agency preview and look at some backup quarterbacks.
And the Titans need to be very serious about backup quarterbacks.
So I'm going to do my hype, my happy, and my hate tears at backup quarterback.
Can't wait to dive into all that.
Before we do, thank you for making the Locked on Titans podcast
your first listen each and every day.

It's your team every day.
Here on the number one Tennessee Titans podcast in the world.
Again, we're starting the free agency preview.
I'm going to go through every position before we get to the start of free agency on March 15th.
But first, we got to talk about this Justin Jefferson thing.
And look, I know that you guys are going to tell me I'm just being a wet blanket.
I don't want to trade for Higgins.
I don't want to trade for Jefferson.
But again, it comes down to the same philosophy.
The Tennessee Titans are not a microwave, all right?
This is not throw it in the mic, hit a couple add 30 second clicks,
and then this thing's going to be ready to go to the Super Bowl.
The Tennessee Titans are at a very low level when it comes to the roster building process. They need to build this thing up, and it's going to take multiple off seasons to get
this team in the position to be a Super Bowl contender once again. I answered one of your
guys' questions a few weeks ago. When do I think the Titans Super Bowl window will open back up?
For me, it's 2025.
The Titans are not going to be a Super Bowl contender in 2024.
They're simply not going to have the time to build this roster to where it needs to be.
They're going to need two off-seasons of big-time cap space,
two off-seasons of big-time cap space, two off-seasons of draft picks.
2025, they have the ability to have their full complement of draft picks,
especially at the top of the draft.
It's going to take two drafts, two free agencies,
to get this to a place where I could even consider the Titans
as a Super Bowl contender.
So look, you see moves that get made.
The Dolphins trade for Tyree Kill. The
Eagles trading for A.J. Brown. These are rosters and teams that were more ready to seriously compete
than where the Titans are now. Go through the roster, folks. There is nothing. It's bare,
all right? So I am just not in favor of these get-rich-qu quick schemes that sacrifice the Titans ability to build this thing
up. So I want to go over this mock trade that I saw online. My guy, Jake Robertson, a big Titans
fan. I've talked to him before and I've talked to Jake. If you guys follow Jake on Twitter,
whatever, I let him know that I was going to be talking about this and I do not agree
with the trade that he put together. It's nothing personal. It's nothing rude, but hey, great conversation starter. So we're having the conversation.
The trade that Jake laid out was the Tennessee Titans get Justin Jefferson
and pick 109. So a fourth rounder, the Vikings would get pick number seven this year,
next year's first round pick, and a third round
pick next year. There is no way. Now look, Justin Jefferson is worth two first round picks. All
right? I don't think that's crazy. Number one, let me just say this. I don't think the Vikings
are going to trade him. I don't. So regardless of whether I like the trade, don't like the trade,
I don't think the Vikings are going to trade him anyway. But regardless of all of that,
this trade would make zero cents for the Titans. Zero cents. All right. The Titans might have a
high pick again next year. So you have the chance of giving up a top 10 pick this year and a top
16 pick next year to get Justin Jefferson,
how much is Justin Jefferson on his own going to change this team?
I think he's one of the top five wide receivers in the entire NFL.
But again, the rest of the team is not good enough.
So not only are you giving up a first-round pick this year,
which you desperately, guys, the lifeblood
of good football teams,
sustainable success,
which is what Rayan Carton
and Chad Brinker
and Amy Adams-Strunk
have been talking about all offseason.
Sustainable success
is only created
by hitting on early draft picks.
It's that simple.
The draft,
Chad Brinker told you,
free agency is there to supplement. The draft is how you build your team. Why? Because you need cheap, high-level players.
That is how you gain the salary cap. That is how you fix everything. Even look at the Kansas City
Chiefs this year. Look at their roster. They trade away Tyreek Hill.
They get draft picks.
And look at all of the cheap, great players that they have playing.
Look at Trent McDuffie.
Look at Trey Smith.
Think about, look at Isaiah Pacheco.
Look at all of the players that they were able to get in recent drafts. And there's way more than that.
You're getting, guys, think about this.
Say the Titans got Malik Nabors at pick number seven
and Malik Nabors as a top first round pick
became one of the top 10 wide receivers in the NFL.
You're paying him $8 million a season for the next four years.
Yes, Justin Jefferson is a top five wide receiver in the NFL,
but you'll be paying him $32 million, $32 million a year.
Look at the difference. That's $24 million of difference for better production. Yes,
but how much better? And you could say, oh, well, the Titans will probably pick a bust in the first
round. Okay, well then they're not going to be good anyways. Nothing they do will matter if they
continue to not have success in the draft. You must win through the
draft. And giving up your first round pick this year in the top 10 and your first round pick next
year to go get the most expensive wide receiver in NFL history. When Justin Jefferson gets his
new deal, he will be the highest paid wide receiver in NFL history. So not only are you
giving up two first round picks and a third round pick,
you're also giving out the most expensive wide receiver contract
in NFL history.
Look,
this is just not how the Tennessee Titans need to build this.
The Titans don't need to microwave this thing.
They need to slow cook it.
Yes, you add free agents this year that makes sense.
But again, to trade all of that
draft capital and give out the biggest contract a wide
receiver has ever seen in NFL history, it would be absurd.
It just doesn't make any sense for where the Titans are at as a team
right now. So, I get it.
We all want to play Madden.
We all want the best players in the NFL on the Titans.
Trade this, trade that.
But that's not how it works in real life.
Okay?
Give it up.
Two first round picks
and a third round pick next year
that the Titans desperately need
to add cheap young players
to this roster.
That is where the biggest value is.
The greatest contract value is rookie contracts.
And the Titans need to stack their team full of those,
not give them away for a high-priced, most expensive free agent ever.
Like, I get it. Justin Jefferson is awesome.
He is fantastic. No doubt about it.
But the Titans are just not in a position to make these kind of deals. I get it. Justin Jefferson is awesome. He is fantastic. No doubt about it.
But the Titans are just not in a position to make these kind of deals.
It is not setting them up for long-term success.
Let me know. Would you take that deal?
Or do you feel like I do and think that is not a smart move for the Titans?
Now it's time to talk backup quarterbacks, ladies and gentlemen.

We just talked about the Justin Jefferson trade,
but now it's time to begin the 2024 Locked on Titans free agency preview.
We're going to be looking at back-up quarterbacks.
Before I get into that, thank you guys again for making the Locked on Titans podcast
your first listen each and every day.
Remember, this is just the beginning.
I'm going to be looking at running back, wide receiver, tight end, offensive line,
every position on defense as we approach March 15th,
the opening of free agency.
We're going to get a ton of news this week from the combine as well.
Make sure you stick with me here on the number one Tennessee Titans podcast in the world.
It's your team every day.
But I'm going to do my free agency preview using my hype, happy, and hate tiers.
So I'm going to tell you which backup quarterback options I am hype about,
which backup quarterbacks I would be happy about, and then which backup quarterbacks I would be happy about,
and then which backup quarterbacks I would hate.
And before I get into it, I want to say this.
Backup quarterback needs to be a position that the Tennessee Titans prioritize.
They have to take backup quarterback very, very seriously.
All right?
They are in a position right now with Will Levis as a young quarterback
that they can not only afford to have a good backup quarterback.
They couldn't do that when they were paying Henry and paying Tannehill.
I get it.
They couldn't afford a good backup quarterback.
But now, with the roster being stacked with young players most likely,
having a ton of free agency money,
and having a young quarterback like Will Levis,
likely having a ton of free agency money and having a young quarterback like Will Levis,
a good backup quarterback is absolutely critical for the Titans. So with that being said,
my high tier number one, the backup quarterback that I would like to have is Jake Browning.
Jake Browning won games for the Cincinnati Bengals last year. He obviously has a connection with Brian Callahan and Brian Callahan has been asked about that connection
multiple times. So to me, what I want in a backup quarterback, look, if Will Levis gets hurt and
he's out for the season, then yeah, you know, probably not going to be able to do much long
term, whatever. Okay. I get that. But what you want is a backup quarterback that could come
in for the second half because your quarterback got hurt in the second quarter and lead the team
to a victory. Your quarterback is out for two to three weeks. The backup can come in and
realistically win you a game or two. That is what you want from your backup quarterback.
Of course, I would love a backup quarterback that's just as good as the starter and could come
in and win just as many games and lead the team and not ruin the ceiling and all that stuff. But the
reality is I want a backup quarterback that I think could actually win some games. And Jake
Browning has proven that he can do that. Now, caveat, important information. Jake Browning is
an exclusive rights free agent, which means that the Bengals have exclusive rights to sign him back.
Alright?
So the Bengals would have to void his exclusive rights
and let him just go into unrestricted free agency.
I don't think that's going to happen,
but either way,
I wanted to make it clear,
Jake Browning would be my top choice
because he's shown that he can win
and the connection with Brian Callahan.
So now that moves us to the next names on the list,
which are all actual free agents, okay?
No. 1 for me, Garner Minshew.
I don't got to do a lot of talking about Garner Minshew, right?
I mean, we just saw him lead Indianapolis to a winning season.
They were one game away from making the playoffs.
A bad throw by Garner Minshew, which is why ultimately he's a
backup and they wanted Anthony Richardson. But again, I want Garner Minshew as
a backup. And if Will Levis were to get hurt, I think that
Garner Minshew could absolutely come in and win some games. We've seen Garner Minshew win a ton of games.
Alright, and with a smart coach and a smart plan to help him,
I think that Garner Minshew would be excellent.
And Gardner Minshew's probably looking at $8-10 million.
That's a little high.
I'm not going to lie.
That's a little high.
So that's why I would prefer Jake Browning.
Probably be around $5-6 million.
Gardner Minshew's looking at $8-10 million.
That's a little too high.
But just in a vacuum, Gardner Minshew would be fantastic.
Now, going down the list,
my next option is Jacoby Brissett.
We have seen Jacoby Brissett win football games.
He is a fringe, low-end quarterback one,
high-end quarterback two,
and that's the kind of guy the Titans need to target here.
They need to target a high-end backup quarterback.
They have the money to do it,
and Jacoby Brissett's market evaluations
right now are like $6 million to $7 million. I think that would absolutely be worth paying
to get a good functional backup quarterback that can actually steer the ship and lead you to a
couple of victories if Will Levis got hurt. And the final name that I want to throw out here
is Jimmy Garoppolo. Look, I know that Jimmy Garoppolo is suspended for two years.
I know, or two
games. Two years. Jesus.
He's suspended for two games. I get it. But look,
that is going to lower
his price tag. The injury
history is going to lower his price tag.
You don't need him to be your starter. So I'm not as
worried about the injuries because he's only going to play
if Will Levis gets hurt. You have
the connection with Bo Hardigree,
who was the interim offensive coordinator for the Raiders,
is the quarterback coach for the Titans now,
so there's connection there.
And again, I think the two games, it's only two games,
the two-game suspension gives you the opportunity
to get Jimmy Garoppolo to lower rate.
He's got Super Bowl experience.
So even if he doesn't play, being in Will Levis' ear,
being in that quarterback room and telling Will Levis what he went through
on his way to managing a football team to a Super Bowl,
I think that's valuable experience and valuable wisdom
that Will Levis could learn from.
So for me, I would love Jake Browning, exclusive rights-free agent,
though let's be serious.
I would love Garner Minshew.
I would love Jacoby Brissett.
I would also really like Jimmy Garoppolo as well.
I think that would make a ton of sense.
The Titans could keep Malik Willis around for a couple of games.
And then when Jimmy Garoppolo is off his suspension,
you can release Malik Willis and move to Garoppolo
as your full-time backup quarterback.
So that's what I would be looking for.
And also, let me say this.
Before I move into my happy, before I move into my hate options,
I think a backup quarterback would covet the Tennessee Titans.
Number one, backup quarterbacks are historically frugal.
All right?
They're all about making that cheddar and not having to play.
And when you come to Tennessee, the Titans have cap space
to pay a premium for a backup quarterback.
You're in a non-tax, state tax state, so you're saving money there.
Also, Brian Callahan is considered a quarterback whisperer, so if you do get in the game,
you're going to have somebody who's going to put you in the best position to win.
And then also, let's just be honest. Will Levis gets hurt a lot.
Will Levis got hurt a lot in college.
Will Levis got banged up a lot his rookie season.
He plays an aggressive, basically out-of-control style.
We're seeing him get spun in the air like a top.
He's lowering his shoulder, trying to truck defensive backs.
Will Levis plays football in a way
that gives a backup quarterback a good chance to play.
So, financially, schematically, the opportunity to play,
I think the Titans make a ton of sense for a backup quarterback.
And that's why these top options that I'm talking about
would actually be a good fit for Tennessee and would be interesting in Tennessee
because it would be a good situation for them.
So again, my hype tier, guys, I would be hype about Jake Browning,
exclusive rights free agent though, Garner Minchu, Jacoby Brissett, and Jimmy Garoppolo.
Let me know if you like any of those options.
Let me know who your choice would be at the top of the top for backup quarterback.
Now I'm going to get into my happy tier and my hate tier as well.
So we'll dive into that next.

Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about Justin Jefferson and how I don't think that would be a smart trade for the Titans.
We talked about my top of the top backup quarterback options
as we kicked off the 2024 Locked on Titans free agency preview.
Now I want to get into my other two tiers of backup quarterbacks,
my happy tier and my hate tier.
Before we get into that,
I do want to thank you again for making the Locked On Titans podcast your first listen.
I also want to let you know that Locked On has launched the first ever

But, Jake Browning, Garner Minchu, Jacoby Brissett, Jimmy Garoppolo.
That's my hype tier.
Those are guys I'm freaking out.
I'm hype.
I'm over the moon.
But there are a lot of guys in my happy tier that would make a lot of sense.
Number one among them, Josh Dobbs.
All right, look.
Let me say my piece here.
One of the most frustrating
experiences for me as a Tennessee
Titans content creator, my
entire career covering the team over the
last five to six years has been when
Josh Dobbs was on the Titans, and I'll
be honest. It's because of Tennessee Vols
fans. And here's the thing.
I have nothing against Tennessee Vols fans. And here's the thing. I have nothing against
Tennessee Vols fans. As a matter of fact, when NCAA used to be out, you can't wait for it to
be back, baby. Tighten up in the chat if you're hyped for NCAA 25. But when NCAA was a staple in
my life as a child, I was always Tennessee. I loved starting a dynasty and a franchise with
Tennessee. I love the jerseys. I love the colors, Neyland Stadium, Rocky Top. I loved all a dynasty and a franchise with Tennessee. I loved the jerseys. I loved the colors.
Neyland Stadium.
Rocky Top.
I loved all of it.
I loved Tennessee as a state.
I loved visiting Tennessee.
I loved the Titans.
Like, I had nothing.
I have no predisposition to dislike Tennessee Vols fans.
But the way that they have acted,
one, when Dobbs was quarterback,
and two, after Will Levis got drafted.
It just leaves a sour taste in your
mouth if you're not a Tennessee Vols fan.
There's no other way around it. The
overinflation of who Josh
Dobbs was. I had people telling me
Dobbs is the future. Give Dobbs
a long-term contract. We don't need
to draft a guy now. And
it's just absurd. It's just absurd.
He's a backup quarterback. He's a backup quarterback.
He's a backup quarterback and not even one of the top tier backup quarterbacks. Okay. He's just a
good backup quarterback. All right. And on the flip side, all the Vols fans just absolutely
hating Will Levis, no matter what happens. It's obnoxious. But look, I admit that's not all of
you guys. There's a lot of Tennessee Vols fans out there that are level-headed,
that are smart football fans,
and I respect and love all of you guys, alright?
This isn't some Tennessee Vols hate session.
But I say all that to say this.
Despite the experience being so terrible
when Josh Dobbs was on the Titans,
I'm willing to put my own personal experience aside
for the betterment of the football team.
And Josh Dobbs would be a really good backup quarterback for the Titans.
So out of my happy tier of guys that I would be happy with,
bringing Josh Dobbs back to Tennessee,
he's at the top of the list.
He's not in my hype tier because I have to deal with the Josh Dobbs conversation,
of course, but I would be incredibly happy with Josh Dobbs as the backup quarterback for the Tennessee
Titans.
He is good enough to be that, and I would be very excited to have him be an option for
the Titans.
So he's overrated by Vols fans, but I get it.
You know, we overrate guys that we like that went to the college that we love all that.
I get it.
But just saying, I think Dobbs would be that we love, all that. I get it. But, just saying.
I think Dobbs would be a great option. A backup
quarterback for the Titans. Also,
Carson Wentz.
Alright? Carson Wentz is not good enough
to be a starter. He's simply not. But,
whether you guys
want to hear this or not, Carson
Wentz has a lot of similarities
to Will Levis.
Like, when I watch Will Levis play,
people say Josh Allen, this and that.
I see Carson Wentz.
The good and the bad.
Now, Carson Wentz, before his ACL injury,
was the MVP of the NFL in 2017.
Good Carson Wentz is one of the best quarterbacks
that we've seen in quite some time.
He was excellent, a top five quarterback at the peak of his powers.
And I think Will Levis can be that.
But the recklessness, the over-aggressiveness,
the turnover-worthy plays, the franticness in the pocket,
all of that stuff, you could see glimmers of it in Will Levis
when you watch the tape too.
But with that being said, Carson Wentz is a backup.
His skill set would mirror Will Levis directly.
So it wouldn't be some crazy drop-off
where you wouldn't have to fundamentally change the offense.
Carson Wentz has a cannon.
He's got some functional mobility as well.
So I think with smart offensive coaching and a good plan in place,
Carson Wentz could win a game.
Carson Wentz could lead the team after halftime, after an injury,
and coast the team to a victory.
I think he could do those things.
So I think the similarity in skill set would make a ton of sense for the Titans,
and Wentz is going to be cheaper than the hype tier of Minshew and Brissette,
you know, even Josh Dobbs maybe.
I think Wentz is going to be a cheaper option
and would still give you good value too.
After that, Jameis Winston.
Ah, eat the W, folks.
Eat the W.
Winston is not higher on my list.
He's a little off the reservation.
Last year when they were smoking the Falcons at the end of the year,
he went rogue, didn't follow the play call,
and went for a touchdown when his coach told him to kneel.
I don't really like that, all right?
But I think he does mirror the skill set of Will Levis.
Strong arm, functional mobility, very aggressive.
I would love to have James Winston on the Titans,
and I think his personality would be really fun.
Now, with that, again, you get the,
I'm not running the play, coach.
We're going to score situation,
but I'm not going to be mad
if the Titans get James Winston as a backup.
I would be happy.
I wouldn't be hype, but I would be happy.
Also, some names that make sense.
Sam Darnold, first-round pedigree.
I think he still has talent.
He's going to be a backup in the NFL for years to come.
Drew Locke.
I'm going to be honest.
It's just because he's a fellow Young Jeezy fan.
I'm in on that.
I'll bring Drew Locke in to be the backup.
I think that, excuse me,
Drew Locke will be one of the better backup quarterbacks in the NFL. Now, I need to get
into my hate tier, and I'll say this. Malik Willis
cannot be the Titans quarterback two next year. He can't be the planet
backup quarterback. One, he's not good enough to be a backup quarterback in the NFL,
and two, as I said at the beginning, when you have a young quarterback
in Will Levis, you need said at the beginning, when you have a young quarterback in Will Levis,
you need a veteran backup quarterback,
not another young guy you're trying to develop.
If the Titans are truly trying to win games this year
and Will Levis gets hurt and Malik Willis comes in,
you are screwed.
You're not winning games.
So, I think the Titans should explore a trade for Malik Willis.
I know a lot of you guys are typing right now, no one's going to trade for Malik Willis. I know a lot of you guys are typing right now,
no one's going to trade for Malik Willis.
I know.
But a conditional seventh round pick in 2025,
if Willis makes the roster, it converts to a pick.
You could do something like that,
and it's a low risk move for the team that's trading for him,
just to give him a new situation and see if he fits better.
But Malik Willis cannot be the Titans backup quarterback
in 2024. He can't. It doesn't make any sense at all for the Titans. It doesn't make any sense at
all for Malik either. So if you're someone who likes Malik Willis, then get him to a situation
where he has a chance because it doesn't make sense in Tennessee. All right. I don't think it'll
make sense anywhere because I don't think Malik Willis is an NFL player, but nonetheless, if you like him, then you need to hope for a trade, hope for
him to get a new opportunity. The Titans need a veteran backup quarterback. So Malik Willis is
number one on my hate list. Like it doesn't make any sense for the Titans to have Malik as the
planned backup quarterback. Also though, Tyrod Taylor. Tyrod Taylor's 34 years old.
He's mobile and his style of game,
I don't think makes sense with the Titans offense.
He doesn't have an incredibly strong arm
at this stage in his career.
The mobility is great, but he's getting older.
He's going to get hurt
and he's going to be more expensive
than maybe some of these other options
like Dobbs and Drew Locke and Carson Wentz.
I do not want Tyrod Taylor.
I don't want to pay a premium for a guy that old.
Similarly, Mitch Trubisky.
I'm out.
I'm out on Trubisky.
I'm not going to lie to you.
I just can't stand Mitch Trubisky.
The way he plays football, the way he looks,
not like his looks overall,
but the way he looks as he's playing football.
It's frantic. It's crazy.
He used to be able to run a little bit,
but I don't think that that's there anymore either.
I'm just out on Mitch Trubisky in general.
And then finally, Marcus Mariota.
Don't do this to me.
I couldn't take it.
You want to talk about the Josh Dobbs experience?
Having Marcus back and having Marcus' stands,
delusional stands,
trying to say that Marcus should play over Will Levis.
I can already hear it.
We saw Marcus play for the Eagles last year.
It's ugly, guys.
He just can't play quarterback anymore.
So I'm out on that.
But that's my hype, happy, and hate tears.
Let me know down below who would you be hype about,
who would you be happy about,
who would you hate to see be the backup quarterback.
Either way, the Titans need to put a premium
on the backup quarterback position this year in free agency,
and they have the money to do it, and the situation makes sense.
So, with that being said,
I will be back with you guys tomorrow
to cover the latest news and the next free agency preview.
But as always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland,
and this was Locked on Titans.
