Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Mike Vrabel DODGED BULLET After Scandal & Still No Excuse for WRONG DECISIONS
Episode Date: May 11, 2026The Tennessee Titans fired Mike Vrabel as their head coach years ago, but his time there is under fire due to an off-the-field scandal that is currently dominating the headlines. If Vrabel was still... the coach of the Titans, this would be a lot worse and in some ways, that makes this a major moment of relief for the team. However, the reality is, the Titans still royally messed up their process that included firing Vrabel. The hires of Ran Carthon and Brian Callahan were disasters and after Chad Brinker's exit, it is fair to say the setup they used was also a waste. Luckily, the Titans are now back on track with Mike Borgonzi at the helm, but Vrabel's current predicament doesn't change the fact his ousting was part of a series of errors for this franchise. If Mike Vrable was still the coach of the Tennessee Titans,
this scandal would be an absolute embarrassment.
But it doesn't excuse the franchise for all the mistakes that happened after his firing.
That and more on today's edition of Locked on Titans.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast,
part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast, Diane.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland Titans fans.

Head to fandle.com to get started on today's show.
We're going to talk about the scandal going on with Mike Rable,
why it would have been so much worse if he was still the coach of the Tennessee Titans
and why the Titans have simply dodged a bullet here.
that doesn't excuse them for all the bad decisions that they made, not only firing Mike
Grable, but then everything that happened after.
And that's kind of where I'm at right now.
And you're starting to see the sentiment from Tennessee Titans fans with everything going on with Mike Grable.
The entire scandal, it seems like every day there's a new video, new picture,
new something to keep the Mike Brable story going.
And make no mistake.
It would have been an absolute disaster if he was on the Titans right now.
And I mean like just from being a Titans fan, right?
If your coach was the coach going through this scandal,
being slandered online constantly,
new, juicy details and pictures and every single day.
Like it would just be such a distraction from what really matters,
and that's the football.
Every single conversation about your team,
locally, nationally, anywhere at a bar,
group chat with your buddies, nonstop.
It would just be constant.
All anybody would want to say about the Tennessee Titans
would be talking about this scandal with Mike Vrake.
So they absolutely dodged a bullet
and not happened to deal with this.
And imagine Cam Ward, the New Jersey's,
and things would be very different
if Mike Vrable would have stayed the coach.
They probably wouldn't have Cam Ward right now, if we're honest.
But let's just say the situation is the same
and Mike Vrable is still the coach.
The New Jersey's, the signings, Cam Ward, all of that.
And then we'd be, instead of that,
be talking about Mike Grable's scandal.
And did Diana Rusini help the Tennessee Titans cheat to get Julio Jones?
And did this rapport influence the market?
And was it, you know, basically NFL insider trading?
You know, things like that.
Like, is it tampering?
Is it cheating?
And there would be all of these discussions.
Now, there aren't going to be quite as many of those discussions when you're, you know,
the head coach for the Patriots and Robert Craven.
like this would have been way worse
if he were the head coach of the Titans
and I think some of it is not as bad
because he's not the head coach of the Titans anymore
like again the Julio Jones stuff,
the tampering, the insider training,
whatever you want to call it,
you know, conflict of interest that's created there.
It would have been a much bigger deal
if he was still with the Titans
than it is that he's with the Patriots.
But again,
I don't think that just because
Mike Vrable isn't
the coach of the Titans anymore.
And just because this would have been a disaster for the Titans
with everything that's going on
and would have ruined their all season
and been a huge distraction,
just because they dodged a bullet
with this Mike Rable scandal
does not mean
that they were right to fire him.
You know, like that's the equivalent that I'm seeing
from a lot of Titans fans out there
that, oh, now that this scandal,
is going on, it's a good thing that the Titans avoided this.
And listen, it is a good thing that the Titans avoided this.
But is avoiding this worth the last couple of seasons
of Titans football and everything that's happened since Mike Vrable got fired?
And if Mike Vrable doesn't have to step down
as the New England Patriots head coach,
if he isn't, you know, eventually fired
or anything like that.
If he, you know, this is happening during the summer,
what perfect timing for Mike Vrable?
Let this blow over by the time training camp
or the season comes around.
But let's say it doesn't blow over.
And he has to step down for a year
or, you know, he's fired by right,
which isn't going to happen, in my opinion.
But then at that time,
then we could have a conversation of,
oh, well, I know that the Titans had back-to-back
three-win seasons, but this would have been an absolute disaster and totally ruined the
program that they were building and would have left them flat-footed before a season started
in the middle of Cam Ward's development and with the New Jersey's and the new stadium on
the way like this is just the worst thing that could ever happen.
So if he actually has to step down or he gets fired, then maybe we could have that conversation.
But right now as things stand, there's no way that you could say what's going on with Mike
Brable right now makes it okay that the Titans not only fired Mike Brable, but then made all the
mistakes that they made after that.

Fans, let's cap off today's bonus edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
Again, we talked about the Mike Brable drama.
Why it would go different for the Titans because the circumstances would be different
and he would certainly have to be fired or step down or something nonsense like that.
It's always going to be worse if you're the Titans.
No doubt.
And it would certainly be a terrible.
terrible, terrible situation to deal with,
and they dodged a bullet by not having to deal with this
in the middle of an excellent offseason.
But again, this doesn't excuse the Titans.
You can't use this to say the Titans didn't make a mistake.
And as everyone loves to remind me,
and I will be honest,
I wanted them to fire Mike Vrable as well.
I thought it was time.
I didn't think that he was going to be able to nurture a young team.
I didn't know if I wanted him to have the offensive coordinator control
over whatever young quarterback the Titans went with Levis,
or if it didn't work out with Levis, whoever was next.
Mike Vrable had proven with Todd Downing, Tim Kelly.
He could not get the offensive coordinator position right over and over.
I mean, they didn't even have that good of an offense with Matt Lafleur
when he was an offensive coordinator here.
Like Mike Brueble just could not get offense right.
And of course he goes to New England and he's saved by Josh McDaniels,
who's too much of a jerk for anybody to want to be a head coach,
but is a good offensive coordinator.
So he'll never lose Josh McDaniels.
to be a head coach somewhere after everything that he's done.
So it just absolutely perfect, lucky, perfect setup for Mike Brable to succeed.
Fantastic.
But would he have been able to pull that off in Tennessee?
That was my argument.
And they had gone 6 and 18 in their last 24.
And it's like he wasn't doing a good job.
But it's fair to say that, yeah, he wasn't doing a good job at the time.
But we knew that Mike Frable was a good coach.
And of course, he goes immediately to the Super Bowl with New York.
England and make us feel even worse about it.
But again, just because this is happening,
does it excuse the Titans franchise
from making the mistake of firing Mike Frable,
which was a mistake, I can admit it.
They were wrong.
I was wrong.
A lot of people were wrong.
They should not have fired Mike Frable.
They should have wrote it out with him.
He's a better head coach than most in the NFL.
It's just a reality.
Now, he needs certain things to succeed,
but I would rather ride out the storm with a good boat
then try to find a new boat that maybe can't do it.
But anyway, and then after that,
it's not just that they fired Mike Vrable.
They fired Mike Vrable
because they believed in Rancarthon.
And then they hired Chad Breaker
to be with Rancarthon
because they don't necessarily trust Rancarthon
and want to have somebody there to help him,
which is a bad sign in the first place.
and then he hires Brian Callahan,
and that's an outright disaster.
One of the worst NFL head coaches in NFL history.
Period. The numbers don't lie.
The stats, the wins,
the tug of war and freeze tag in the offseason,
one of the worst head coaches of all time.
And then you got a fire Ran Carthon,
Chad Brinker.
Now he's gone,
and we were told that this setup
that the Titans had in the first,
front office was a modern setup that makes a lot of sense.
And now immediately after they find a real general manager that they trust, unlike
Rancarthon, now they're back to the normal traditional setup where the general manager is just the general manager and there is no Chad Brinker.
So it's like the structure that they had firing Mike Rable, hiring Rancarthon, hiring Brian Callahan, firing them both,
Chad Brinker getting demoted, Chad Brinker exiting the front office,
like that whole process from firing Mike Vrable
to Chad Brinker stepping down and giving Mike Morgonzi
the clear obvious role of general manager
that is similar to every other place in the NFL.
That from Mike Brable fired to Chad Brinker exit
was an outright disaster for the Titans.
Outright disaster.
Now hopefully Mike Morgonzi has gotten them out of that.
And that's what we're hoping for.
But again, just because Mike Vrable is going through this
scandal doesn't mean that the Titans didn't absolutely have a disaster class over that time period.
So we have to be honest about that.
