Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans MUST CHANGE and HELP CAM WARD, Let Xavier Restrepo PLAY & Coaching Change Boost

Episode Date: September 30, 2025

The Tennessee Titans are 0-4 through four weeks and that means it is time for change. That can start with the schematics on offense and how they support Cam Ward, who is being asked to play quarterbac...k on max difficulty. Around him, the Titans need to give some new blood a chance to play and that includes Xavier Restrepo, who deserves an opportunity to play with the receiver core being mostly disappointing. Finally, while Tyler is uncertain about how big of an impact a coaching change will have, the data suggests there will certainly be a big impact if a move happens soon. Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=asc Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videos Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. Starting point is 00:00:00 The Tennessee Titans are O and 4, and that means it's time for big change. And the biggest change that they can make is how they help Cam Ward. And I'll tell you what they should do on today's edition of Locked On Titan. You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Starting point is 00:00:46 0 and 4 and it's time to make some big changes. I'm going to tell you how they should help out Cam Ward way more than they are on offense. I'm going to tell you why it's time to let Xavier Restrepo get some opportunities and I'm going to tell you how a coaching change statistically can help this football team before we get into all of it do want to thank you for making Locked on Titans your first listen each and every day remember Monday through Friday Tennessee Titans content all year round always for free make sure that you get subscribe stay subscribed it's your team every day here on the Locked on Titans podcast speaking of every day shout out to my everydayers out there tuning in Monday through Friday if you aren't an

I mean there is no one else putting out the amount of free Tennessee Titans content whether it's film stuff on the Ticktack Titans film channel whether it's constant short long form videos here on the locked on Titans podcast whether it's all the social media the graphics all the different stuff I do I am the top Titans content creator in the world so you want to make sure that you stay locked in with locked on Titans but with that being said the Titans squad show that I do with Brad Hopkins and Julian Misanone, those guys are great. Make sure you check out the squad show every Tuesday,
Starting point is 00:02:00 and they do their own little after game show as well. But one of the things that I talked about on the show is how Cam Ward is being asked to play football on max difficulty. The Tennessee Titans are asking Cam Ward as a rookie in his first month of NFL football to play on max difficulty. And I want to go over some changes that the Titans have to make to help Cam Ward here, okay? Because now everybody's starting to, oh, Cam Ward statistically,
Starting point is 00:02:30 the worst rookie quarterback, and oh, Cam Ward are the Titans going to ruin Cam Ward? And all these crazy things that I disagree with. They're not going to ruin Cam Ward. His confidence isn't going to be shot. He's not the worst rookie quarterback we've ever seen all this nonsense. He is just being asked to do the impossible in a terrible situation. So, number one, number one, the Tennessee Titans have to, use more play action. How often do I have to talk about this? How many weeks in a row?
Starting point is 00:03:02 We talked about this with Willis. This is a coaching problem. Play action is one of the best things that you can do to help out your young quarterback. All right? It gives you the opportunity to leave more blockers in but at the same time creates more separation which is a double whammy that the Titans could really use. Not only that, but it allows Cam Ward additional time to read the field. It plays off of the one thing the Titans are doing okay on offense right now and that's running the football. The play action rate went down this week to 19.4%. I just don't understand. And again, there are people say, well, if you're not running the ball, if you're down in the game, if you're, none of that is statistically true.
Starting point is 00:03:50 The effectiveness of play action, the EPA per play of play action stays relatively the same regardless of success in the run game regardless of the game script the Titans have to find a way to incorporate more play action into their offense last week it was 31.1% and we went down to 19% that just it just can't happen not only that but with the play action move the pocket It doesn't always have to be off of play action. You don't have to do a under center play action bootleg to get your quarterback on the move. The only time that I can recall, a designed rollout that wasn't on play action
Starting point is 00:04:38 was the one where the Titans did it in the red zone against the Broncos on week one. That's the only time. Why are we not getting Cam Ward on the move? And my guy Brad Hopkins, Tennessee Titans legend, offensive linemen, said not only getting him on the move gets him away from the pass rush and helps the offensive line but it also allows Cam Ward
Starting point is 00:04:58 and I'm doing my Brad Hopkins impression it also allows Cam Ward to use his legs Brad loves making his points like that you guys got to check out the squad show it's just a beautiful trifecta of someone who's on the beat someone like me covering the team
Starting point is 00:05:13 Brad Hopkins a former player it's excellent but it's a great point get Cam Ward on the move it doesn't have to be play action naked bootlegs all the time. You can just let him do a rolling pocket and have some easy opportunities. And then you can layer off of that. Not only that,
Starting point is 00:05:32 but some other schematic things that must change to help Cam Ward. They got to run quicker screens. And I know a lot of you guys are saying, throw the screens out of the playbook. Guys, you can't not run screens. Screens are too effective in the NFL for other teams. screens are too effective in football in general to not run screens. Where are the tight end screens though?
Starting point is 00:05:55 Where are the running back screens? I see a lot of wide receiver screens, but where are the other ones? And here's my big thing about the screens. They take too long to develop. It takes too long for the running back to get out into the screen area. It takes too long for the tight end to turn around and be ready to get the screen. It takes too long for the offensive linemen to let go with their guys.
Starting point is 00:06:17 Yeah, you want to sell the block at first. so that they don't automatically know that it's a screen. Okay, I get that. But we got to move these plays quicker. The Titans' offense, whether it's the orbit motion and all these ball fakes in the backfield, the Titans' offense takes so long to develop their plays, that they get crushed in the backfield more often than not.
Starting point is 00:06:39 You've got to hit your screens quicker. And along with that, where is the RPO game? I thought my optimistic brain me on my optimistic stuff again I thought that the Titans didn't show any RPO stuff in the preseason because it's the preseason you don't want teams to know hey we're going to have a heavy RPO game plan and this is why I keep bringing up Cliff Kingsbury
Starting point is 00:07:05 as a guy who makes a ton of sense for Cam Ward because he can blend that college style with the modern NFL why aren't the Titans using more RPO's And the RPO's actions that we do see, they aren't actual RPO's. They're designed RPO's where Cam Ward has a predetermined option. That's not a true RPO. And all of them are, I'm handing it off or throwing it out to a wide receiver screen. And here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:07:33 The outside guy who has to be blocked, he's flying up the field once he sees that because there's no threat to him in the run game. That's not his job. Where's the RPO slant? Where is the RPO tight end flat? Where is the RPO seam route? Where are these other RPO concepts? Is Brian Callahan not creative enough or capable enough?
Starting point is 00:07:52 Did he not go talk to Mario Cristobal to learn how to do this stuff? Did he not study the college football tape to take concepts from college football and apply it to his rookie quarterback who had success in college? Where is the creativity? Where is this thing that could absolutely help Cam Ward and make him feel comfortable? And not only that
Starting point is 00:08:13 So we've talked about play action We talked about RPO's We've talked about pocket movement We've talked about hitting screens quicker But not only that 12 personnel We talk during the off season About how the Titans need to utilize
Starting point is 00:08:26 12 personnel more If you don't know what 12 personnel is It's a simple code in the NFL Where the first number is running backs The second number is tight ends So 12 personnel 1 running back Two tight ends
Starting point is 00:08:39 12 that leaves two wide receivers. We all talked about, and the Titans coaching staff talked about how they want to be in more tight-end sets this year. They want to use, because you have Chigacanquo who's a good move tight-end. You bring in Gutter Helm, who could be a traditional wide tight-end. And yet, despite all of that
Starting point is 00:08:59 and how 12 personnel could create matchups and opportunities and have more blockers in, and Chigacquo was basically a third wide receiver, so you still get your three-wide receiver field to it, the Titans have run 11 personnel, which remember what we just said. 11. 1 running back. 11. 1 tight end. 11. 3 wide receivers. The Titans have run 86% of their offensive plays out of 11 personnel. And that's why I said before the season. I don't buy all this 12 personnel stuff the coaching
Starting point is 00:09:32 staff is selling to us. Because when Brian Callahan has to put, I almost said something that I shouldn't on the show. When Brian Callahan has to put all his chips on the table, he's going to do it with his baby blanket of 11 personnel. And I've used that phrase baby blanket to describe this exact situation. The Titans have run 86% of their plays through 11 personnel. The second closest team in the NFL is the Minnesota Vikings at 75%. So 11% higher than the second closest team in the NFL. If the Titans don't run more 12 personnel, get more tight ends out on the field,
Starting point is 00:10:07 Seymour base defense, they're in trouble. And again, my issue with Brian Callahan, which looking back on last season, it continues here, the definition of a good coach is being able to mold his system to fit his talent. And Brian Callahan does the opposite of that. He tries to put a square peg into a circle hole
Starting point is 00:10:29 and jam it and jam it and jam it. And it's not working. So along with those schematic changes, I got some players that need to get more opportunities for this Titans team, including Xavier Restrepo. Do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you. By Mazda. Mazda crafts cars for those who do more than simply move.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Mazda delivers confidence with every ride, with more IHS top safety pick awards than anyone else as of August 2025. From footwork to breath work, we know that athletes sweat all the details. Mazda brings the same intention to how they craft every model. You can feel the Japanese craftsmanship in every single detail from the metallic accents to the available Napa leather upholstery. You can make everyday drives feel like anything but from smooth handling to intuitive controls with all wheel drive standard.
Starting point is 00:11:30 In every crossover SUV you can drive with confidence through almost every season. I have a Mazda CX5 at home, absolutely love my Mazda crossover, and I know that you will love a Mazda vehicle as well. Like all of our favorite players, Mazda sweats every detail because when you make every move count,
Starting point is 00:11:52 impossible becomes irrelevant. Titans fans. Let's continue today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast. I'm looking at changes the Tennessee Titans need to make here to turn this thing around and be a better football team. And we talked about how they can help Cam Ward, and I'm pretty disappointed with what the plan has been. The Titans have basically just asked Cam Ward to be Joe Burrow.
Starting point is 00:12:29 And it's like, that is not his skill set. We have to evolve. We have to meet him in the middle. You got to meet in the middle. Please don't copyright me, YouTube, for the terrible singing. But nonetheless, disgusted by the lack of help and the lack of meat in the middle that the Titans have had for Cam Ward. But it goes further than that. It's time to let some younger players get more opportunities now.
Starting point is 00:12:55 It is time to let certain players get more chances because your veteran players are not getting the job done. Starts with Xavier Restrepo with X. And look, some people just like to go against the grain. Everybody out here is like, I want to see Xavier Restrepo. So you got the haters in the comments where like,
Starting point is 00:13:15 he's short, he's slow, why would they blow, they can't get open right now? Xavier Restrepo. Football is not a game that is played entirely at the combine. You're 40-yard, your broad jump, your three-cone, your height, weight, your arm length, look, all that stuff is important and it helps you create guidelines. All right, looking at edge rushers.
Starting point is 00:13:40 In the NFL there are no good edge rushers who don't meet this criteria. Okay, that's fine. But we have so many examples throughout the history of the NFL, recent, long term, doesn't matter, we have so many examples of players like Xavier Restrepa who just get the job. done. Now, I'm not saying he's a Monra St. Brown. He's not, okay? He's not even that athletic. But why can't he be Danny Amandola? Why can he be a Wes Welker type? You think Wes Welker was big and fast? No, he was not. You know what Xavier Restrepo does?
Starting point is 00:14:20 He doesn't run a great 40. He doesn't have super long arms. He isn't super tall. He gets open. He understands where to sit in a zone. He has chemistry with your rookie quarterback who is struggling to survive right now. You know who is not doing the job? Tyler Lockett. Tyler Lockett ran the most routes of any Titans wide receiver in the game against the Texans. 34-year-old Tyler Lockett
Starting point is 00:14:48 who couldn't get separation against me and man coverage. Why would we not give Xavier Restrepo an opportunity? Bryce Oliver is banged up. Van Jefferson has done relatively nothing. Calvin Ridley is struggling. Alec Ayo Manor has been good. But like, what are, what is there to lose? Your O. and four.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Let Xavier Restrepo get some of those Tyler Lockett reps. Why is that a problem? And Calvin Ridley is now banged up. Well, if Calvin Ridley is banged up and you need a speed guy to take over the Z wide receiver spot, why not let Chim D-K do that and let Restrepo get some. some slot reps. What is there to lose?
Starting point is 00:15:38 Why not give it a shot? You might have a diamond in the rough. You might have a guy who, and listen, I'm going to be honest. Xavier Shrepo is not going to do a dang thing on special teams. Don't even trick yourself. Maybe they can teach them special teams. No, special teams,
Starting point is 00:15:58 you're flying down the field trying to tackle people. You're not trying to get open. and catch passes, you do need guys who are 6'2, 200 pounds who run fast. Like, you need linebackers, basically. If you could get a team full of linebackers to play special teams, that's what you want. So, I'm not even going to pretend like Xavier Restrepo needs to play on special teams or is going to be able to eventually. No, he's not.
Starting point is 00:16:23 And they don't need him to return because Chim D.K. is actually a good returner. Let him play wide receiver. Your offense is the disaster right now. I don't care about special teams. If Xavier Restrepo can help the offense move the chains and help Cam Ward, then why would you not give that a shot? I don't care that he can't run down on kick coverage. I don't care that he can't do punt coverage.
Starting point is 00:16:51 I just don't care. The offense is in the gutter. Let Xavier Restrepo get a chance. Give him five or six, downs. The Titans got beat 26 to nothing. Why can't we have Xavier Restrepo get 10 snaps in the fourth quarter? Why?
Starting point is 00:17:12 Because Tyler Lockett? What's that going to do for the future? After this year, Tyler Lockett is gone. He's not a part of this team. And this season is over. They were making the playoffs. They were doing anything of note this year. Why would you not let Xavier Restrepo get a change?
Starting point is 00:17:32 It's frustrating. And not only that, but again, Chim Dekey, let Chim Deky get more chances. Screw Tyler Lockett and Van Jefferson. Let Chim Dekay take all of those reps. Who cares if his route craft isn't up the par? Who cares if he's not used to run in anything but deep crossers? Let him learn.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Let his speed be out there. Because he is a part of your future. Van Jefferson and Tyler Lockett are not. And that brings me to my final. offensive player. Gunner helm. I talked about why the Titans need to use more two tight end sets. They need to use more 12 personnel. Part of that is getting Gunner Helm on the field more. Gunner Helm ran 10 routes. 10. While Chigaconquo has a long history of drop passes, not being able to block whatsoever. So the
Starting point is 00:18:31 Titans are running a ton of 11 personnel, which means that when they do run the ball, Chica Conquo is your tight end who's supposed to be blocking in the box. How's that working out for you? Spoiler, it isn't. This is why I said Gunner Helm should be tight end one before the year. Because I saw the riding on the wall. Chig can't block. And if the Titans are going to be an 11 personnel as much as Brian Callahan wants to,
Starting point is 00:18:55 then they need a tight end who's a better blocker and a bigger body. And Gunnor Helm hasn't been an incredible blocker. through the start of the season. He's not George Kittle. But he's a bigger body and gives you a better chance of executing these plays. And let me tell you this. If you see Chica Conquo
Starting point is 00:19:12 off the line of scrimmage and look into the other side of the formation, he's doing a split flow block. He's pulling around to do a kickout block. Chicka Conquo is selling the play with his eyes. Just watch the tape. I know every single time the Titans are running the football.
Starting point is 00:19:31 because Chicka Conquo, if he's off the line of scrimmage, we'll be looking across the formation. And if I am noticing this, you know dang well that the other NFL defensive coordinators are noticing this. He's giving it away with his eyes. Going back to the seam route that Cam Ward throw against the Colts. If that's Gunner Helm, who's 6'5 with long arms,
Starting point is 00:19:59 not 6'2 Chick-a-Conquo, that's a catch. And look, Cam Ward is not. I said this. All of my little videos that I made a month ago are coming home to Roos, Bobby Boucher. I told you, Cam Ward is a gun slinger. He's not Tom Brady. He's not Joe Burrow.
Starting point is 00:20:18 He's not pinpoint accurate right to the hands. He needs guys with long arms, big catch radiuses, who can help when he's maybe not pinpoint accurate. That's gunner helmet. not Chick-a-Conk, whoa. Gunner-Helm has to play more. He has to play more. No doubt about it.
Starting point is 00:20:38 So, I'm also going to say this. They need to find a way to get Kevin Winston out on the field because a Monty Hooker and Quandre Diggs are not playing well, especially Amani Hooker, playing terrible. They need to find a way to get Kevin Winston out on the field, which another video, what's going on with Kevin Winston, another video where I was right. And since then, they have botched J.C. Latham.
Starting point is 00:21:02 They have botched of Andre Sweat. Everybody gets mad at me in the moment when I tell you the Titans are messing up. And then a month later when everybody goes, oh man, the Titans messed that up. Does anybody come back and tell me, oh, Tyler, you were right. Nope. Doesn't happen. But alas, I don't care if I get the credit or not. The Titans just have to make these changes. They're 0 and 4.
Starting point is 00:21:29 It is time. And another big change and maybe the biggest change is that coach. And I admit, I said, I'm not quite certain how much changing the coach is going to change things. But I saw some data on Twitter this weekend. I'm willing to say that I'm wrong about that. Let's change the coach and see what happens. Do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you
Starting point is 00:21:54 by Fandul Sportsbook. The NFL season is here and Fandle has an offer that you don't want to miss. Use the code locked on NFL at monarchmoney.com in your browser for half off your first year.
Starting point is 00:24:01 Once again, that's 50% off your first year at monarchmoney.com with the code locked on NFL. Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast. We talked about the changes that I want to see the Tennessee Titans make. They need to help out Cam more schematically on offense. They need to let some of the younger players get more opportunities, whether it works or it doesn't work. It is time to do that.
Starting point is 00:24:42 But now, I want to talk about this potential coaching change because I have said, and I've said earlier this week, that I don't know that a coaching change will help the Tennessee Titans do anything different or do anything better or to change the season in any way. I didn't know that I believe that. Now, I have said multiple times that there is a bump that you get from changing the coaching. Like, that is just confirmed. I looked up the data on that.
Starting point is 00:25:10 But I didn't go quite as deep into it as my guy Superhorn on Twitter. Another film guy who covers the Titans, not quite as active as some others, but Superhorn knows what he's talking about, does great film stuff. It's at Super underscore horn on Twitter. But he did a real deep dive into the percentages here of coaching changes around the NFL. And I want to kind of go through the thread that he put together to show you that, although I may be skeptical of what a coaching change could do for this team, it doesn't mean I'm against firing Brian Callahan.
Starting point is 00:25:43 They need to fire Brian Callahan. But I was just skeptical of whether that would actually make a difference. But just listen to this. since 2000 there have been 36 head coaching changes during the season all right the results of those changes 25 teams out of the 36 improved their win percentage 69% of those teams improved nice only 10 of those teams got worse 27%
Starting point is 00:26:18 and one team remained unchanged 3%. The average win percentage of those teams before they fired their head coach was 26.9% win percentage. The average percentage after they fired their bad head coach, 39%. So roughly a 14% jump and winning percentage after you fire your coach mid-season. There's the fire coach bump that I've been talking about. Now, Superhorn also said that the success of those teams after they've fire their head coach, largely depended on how bad
Starting point is 00:26:55 the coach actually was, the current coach. Win percentages under 200. So, under 200 win percentage, 14 of those teams is how many qualified for that.
Starting point is 00:27:13 They improved their win percentage 18.8%. So even more than the percentage that we talked about before. Also, when you fire that coach really matters. If you fire your coach before or at eight games, your average improvement is 16.3 percentage points. And your success rate improves 75%.
Starting point is 00:27:44 If you fire your coach after eight games, which is 20 of the teams, and it's more common that you fire your coach later in the season, only 9 percentage points better. And success rate is only 65%. So the point of all of that is, and great thread right there by Superhorn, but the point of all of that is to say
Starting point is 00:28:09 that if you have an absolutely terrible garbage head coach, which the Titans do, and you fire that coach before week 8, or at week 8, your team, historically speaking, gets significantly better throughout the back end of the season. So I can tell you that
Starting point is 00:28:30 I don't know if firing Brian Callahan's going to make a big difference. That doesn't mean that I don't want Brian Callahan fired. He needs to be fired, as I have said, for weeks and weeks and weeks now. But that just shows you that maybe my initial read of it is wrong. And historically speaking, the Titans are in a perfect situation to fire Brian Callahan
Starting point is 00:28:53 and become a better football team so if we want to talk about changes the Tennessee Titans need to make this season they need to help out Cam Ward more schematically on offense they need to let some of these younger players get more opportunities on offense and defense and they need to fire Brian Callahan
Starting point is 00:29:12 and you know what if it doesn't work they don't get any better They don't win more games, all of that. Okay. But how could it be worse? How could it possibly be worse? You need to give your young football team a taste of success.
Starting point is 00:29:35 And that's why I will continue to say that I think Bones Fossil should be the interim head coach. And he, in his press conference on Tuesday, talked about how the team needs to play more. complimentary football and he dove into a bunch of different stuff and it's like that's a head coach right there and Brian Callahan said in his press conference on Monday calling plays not calling plays I don't know if it was better or worse he's checked out folks get a leader as the head coach it's this simple
Starting point is 00:30:11 you make bones fossil the interim head coach he could still be special teams coordinator No big deal. You let Scott Fuchs be the offensive line coach who is a really good offensive line coach for Kansas who's currently the assistant offensive line coach to Bill Callahan because Callahan's definitely going to leave when his son gets fired. Starting point is 00:30:33 And all you do is you make Mike McCoy the offensive coordinator or you let Bo Hardigree be the play caller and the offensive coordinator and you let Mike McCoy, who's a senior offensive assistant, be the quarterback coach or let him be the offensive coordinator, but let Bo Hardegree continue to be the quarterback coach and the play caller. Or take Bo Hard agree with you for all I care and let Mike McCoy be the offensive play caller and offensive coordinator. It's not that difficult to make these changes.

You're 0 and 4, your rookie quarterback is getting roasted, and he's at the podium saying, you know, F bombs and this, he's frustrated. This locker room is frustrated.
