Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans MUST PROTECT Cam Ward, L'Jarius Sneed Must Play More & Brian Callahan Bounce Back
Episode Date: September 9, 2025The Tennessee Titans dropped their first game of the year against the Denver Broncos and while Brian Callahan got all of the attention, the "improved" offensive line did not show the progress that fan...s were hoping for. While you could say it was against a great defensive line, the Titans face another in the Los Angeles Rams this week and JC Latham's status is the biggest question of the week. The Titans defense did show up on Sunday, but to beat the Rams, they will need more snaps from L'Jarius Sneed and more domination from Jeffery Simmons. Finally, Brian Callahan had an awful game and the entire world is talking about it, but Callahan ain't dead yet and he needs a bounce back performance against a Super Bowl winning head coach in Sean McVay. Cam Ward's protection against the Denver Broncos might have been as disappointing as the coaching for the Titans.
And that's why the offensive line is my biggest question mark heading into week two.
I'll break it down on today's edition of Locked on Titans.

I want to take a look at
the biggest questions
for the Tennessee Titans
heading into week two
against the Los Angeles Rams
and number one on my list
is not the
coaching staff, but the Titans offensive line was a massive disappointment in week one.
Also, can the Tennessee Titans defense continue to play the way they did against the Denver
Broncos? And yes, we do have to address the coaching, but I'll tell you why Brian Callahan
has a big time chance here to bounce back. Before we get into all of it, do want to thank you
for making Locked on Titans, your first listen each and every day. Remember, Monday through

I'm gonna be discussing film I'm gonna be discussing data I'm gonna be discussing all the big
talking points all season long you're not gonna get better more informed Tennessee Titans
content than you're gonna get right
here with me on the Locked on Titans podcast
so make sure that you stay locked in
with the Locked on Titans podcast, your team
every day. With that being said
as the data
continues to come out from
the entire week one
around the NFL, I think one of the things
that stands out to me the most is the
performance of the Tennessee Titans offensive
line. It was incredibly disappointing
out there, especially after
the entire offseason
we had hoped
We had hoped that the Tennessee Titans' offensive line would be massively improved.
And I felt pretty confident that the Titans' offensive line would be super improved.
But you come out of that game and you start to look around at some of the data here,
and it's incredibly disappointing from the offensive line.
And it's just another example of why you absolutely cannot blame Cam Ward
for what happened to the Titans.
Cam Ward handled his business in this game and everything else around him.
really let him down and again it's one thing to say that
and it's one thing for me to watch the film
and be able to tell you man the offensive line
was super disappointing
but if you don't want to believe my opinion
if you don't want to believe what I saw on tape
then simply look at the numbers going around the NFL right now
you go to pro football focus and the Tennessee Titans
had the second lowest
the second lowest 31st in the NFL
and pass block grade at 33.9
Think about that. Think about that.
It's absolutely terrible.
You want to go to ESPN's metrics?
You say, oh, pro football focus, blah, blah, blah.
Screw PFS.
Some of you guys feel like that.
I don't feel like that.
Everything is a good piece of data.
Nothing is gospel.
But you want to go by pass block win rate from ESPN?
The Tennessee Titans had a pass block win rate of 52%.
That's 26th in the NFL.
Whereas the Minnesota Vikings were number one in the NFL at 88.
Like, it's bad, folks.
It was bad for the Tennessee Titans in this game
and it's incredibly disappointing again
because the expectation coming into the season
is that the Tennessee Titans offensive line
would be improved.
We talked about how they have to be.
You have two first round picks,
you have three
free agent veteran contracts
and the reality is
outside of Peter Skoronsky
nobody played all that well.
Skoronsky was incredible.
He had an 88 pass block grade per pro football focus, gave up zero pressures,
gave up zero sacks, and 34 dropbacks.
36 snaps, to be honest with you, if you want to count that,
if you want to go just based on regular pass plays, pure dropbacks, true pass set.
As PFF would call it, Skoronsky had 15 snaps and 100% pass block win rate.
Didn't lose a single rep in pass blocking.
but after that
J.C. Latham
41.3 in pass blocking
gave up two pressures in a sack
and then got hurt
and we'll talk about Latham more in a second
Lloyd Cushingberry
gave up two pressures
37.8 pass block grade
Dan Moore
26.4 pass block grade
gave up four pressures
on the day and got eaten alive
and is lucky that he didn't give up a sack
in the end zone and a holding
in the end zone that almost was a safety
for the Titans. I thought they were about to throw the flag there at the end of the first half.
So, just an utter disappointment from the Tennessee Titans offensive line.
And look, we do got to consider the reality here that the Denver Broncos led the NFL in Sacks last year.
They have an absolutely fantastic offensive line with Nick Benito and Jonathan Cooper and Zach Allen.
Like, they have a very good defensive front.
So, you know, maybe the offensive line isn't as bad as it.
seemed. But here's why the offensive line is my biggest question because they're about
to go against the Los Angeles Rams defensive line. The Rams defensive line is pretty
freaking good. I mean, they have Jared Verse who I think might be one of the best
defensive players in the entire NFL. They have Braden Fisk on the interior as well in his
second year playing very well. You look at the pass rush grades on pro football focus.
Los Angeles Rams were second in the NFL and pass rush grade at 76.1.
Like this is a team that's going to get on you.
Okay, Byron Young at edge, very good player as well.
Kobe Turner, Puna Ford.
Like this is an absolutely loaded defensive front.
And a familiar face, former Titan legend Larel Murchison also on that defense.
line. Now, I'm not quite as worried about him as I am others, but, you know, the point is,
just because you say, oh, the Titans' offensive line had to go against the Broncos defensive front,
that's the, well, the Rams might have one of the other top five defensive fronts in the NFL.
It's not selling down, and that's why I thought it was always silly when people said,
well, Dan Moore had to play in the AFC North.
Every single week in the NFL, you were going to face high level.
pass rushers, especially when you play
for the Titans so you don't have to play the Titans
who don't have any good pass rushers.
You know what I mean? Like,
it's not going to get easier.
Okay? And now
a major concern is J.C.
Latham's injury. His hip injury
has lingered throughout the
end of the preseason process.
He looked really banged up after he hurt his hip.
And once Ali Udo came in
folks, things got scary
really, really quickly
for the Tennessee Titans once
Ali Udo came into the game.
He had an 18.5
past block grade and gave up
two pressures and a sack and a quarterback hit
and he played 11
snaps. Okay?
So, I know we all wanted to hope
that the Titans' offensive line
was better, but
they didn't show it in week one
and I'm worried that if the Titans' offensive
line doesn't perform better and J.C.
Latham isn't out there. How are they going to protect Cam Ward?
Some crazy stuff coming out about Cam Ward.
Cam Ward was the third best quarterback in the NFL
and on target percentage of his throws.
87% of his throws were on target.
According to I think it's NGS stats, next-gen stats.
Cam Ward, if you go look at Cam Ward's time in the pocket,
how much time he had in the pocket versus his average depth of throw like him attacking downfield.
Cam Ward was right in there with like Jaden Daniels, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes.
Incredible company to be in.
Cam Ward had the most pressures in the NFL in under two seconds.
Cam Ward was pressured the second most in the NFL 52% of the time.
And I think after the Monday night game, it might be last in the NFL.
so we can talk about the coaching and I know every we've been focused on the coaching we've been talking about Brian Callahan but if we're honest with ourselves the offensive line play might have been just as disappointing as the coaching because the offensive line had higher expectations than I had for Brian Callahan I expected the offensive line to take a big step forward I didn't necessarily expect Callahan to do so so look at that
Again, my biggest question, and let me know your biggest question for the Titans
heading into their week two match up against the Rams.
But my biggest question is, can this offensive line be what the Titans paid for
and protect Cam Ward and allow him to be the special player
that he showed us that he could be on Sunday?
That's what I'm worried about.
But hey, on the defensive side of the ball,
I have a big time question about what Legerius Sneed is going to be able to do
in week two and whether the Titans' defense can keep things rolling.

Titans fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast
going over my biggest questions for the Tennessee Titans
heading into week two of the regular season.
We talked about the offensive line, the concerns there,
J.C. Latham's injury, a bad matchup with the Los Angeles Rams defensive line.
But now I want to move it to the defensive side of the ball and look.
The defense was able to force three turnovers.
the defense was able to do some really good things against the Denver Broncos
when the offense was giving them absolutely nothing.
But I don't think that we can expect the defense
to force three turnovers every single week.
And quite frankly, we can't expect Matthew Stafford
who might have had the best game of any quarterback in the NFL this weekend.
We can't expect Matthew Stafford to be as bad as Bo Nix was in that game.
So the question is for me,
can the Tennessee Titans defense once again be spectacular?
And I think there are two players that we really have to focus on
to answer the question of whether that's possible.
Okay?
Now, before I tell you who I'm looking at,
do want to thank you again for making Locked on Titans
your first listen each and every day.
Tomorrow we'll have crossover Thursday with my guys from Locked on Rams.
Friday I'll have my preview episode telling you exactly
how the Tennessee Titans can win this game.
And spoiler alert, I actually feel a little confident in the Tennessee Titans this week.
It's a scary feeling to feel.
But with that being said, again, number one, Legerius Sneed.
So, last week, Legerius Sneed played 20 snaps, essentially, in the game.
I think 16 past snaps overall for Legerius Sneed.
And Dernard Wilson and Brian Callahan talked about this.
I didn't think that their answer was bad.
They said Legerius Sneed played 21 snaps in the game
because they're trying to ease him back in.
He had a pitch count.
And like I said yesterday,
I'm not mad about Legerius Need having a pitch count.
Sometimes you've got to protect players from themselves
and you've got to make sure that you're not letting them
push themselves too hard
because the players are always going to want to play.
But Legerius Need has to play more.
Okay?
And the thing is, I had someone asked me, I know Sneed didn't play a lot, but how did he play?
And the reality is, Legerius Sneed actually played pretty solid.
I mean, he had an 83.3 coverage grade on the day.
He gave up zero catches for zero yards.
Like, Legerius Sneed was actually good.
He got involved in run defense.
I thought he was a solid tackler.
He had one tackle in particular where I thought he was really physical.
He ended up with three tackles on the day.
When Sneed was out there, he looked good.
And look, against this Los Angeles Rams team,
when you have Pooka Nakua and you have Devonte Adams,
like, the Titans can't afford to have Daryl Baker out there a ton
instead of Legerius Sneed.
I know that they're trying to work him in and they don't want to overwork him too early,
but at some point, this is the exact kind of matchup
that Legerius Sneed got paid to dominate it.
The reason the Titans paid Legerius Sneed,
the reason that the Titans traded a third round pick for Legerius Sneed
is because they needed him for matchups like this
against high-level players and high-level wide receiver groups.
And here's the thing.
If the Titans stand a chance of slowing down the Los Angeles Rams passing game,
it's going to be because Ligeria Sneed eliminates one of those players.
Now, we see this philosophy quite often in the NFL.
I think we saw it with the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles.
What the Eagles did was they took their number one cornerback,
Quignon Mitchell, and they put him on George Pickens.
And they said, we're going to have our number one cornerback
shut down your number two wide receiver,
and then everybody else on defense is responsible for C.D.
C.D. Lamb. Now, that plan didn't work.
Well, I guess you could say the Eagles won the game, but C.D. Lamb was open.
He had seven catches for 110 yards and dropped three passes that would all been huge.
I mean, C.D. Lam should have had like 15 catches for 170 yards if he simply catches the football.
So you could say like, hey, that didn't work for them. Why would we do that?
But that's a classic Bill Belichick move too.
Belichick used to do that all the time. He'd take his top corner like a Malcolm Butler, for example.
And he'd say, you're guarding the number one wide receiver
and we're going to shade the coverage
and roll the coverage to the other guy
and have multiple people on him.
I think the Titan should do something similar.
I think Legerius Sneed should play one-on-one with Devante Adams.
And then you should let the rest of the defense deal with Pooka Nakuwa.
Have Jarvis Brownlee Jr. jam Pooka Nakua at the line of scrimmage.
Have Xavier Woods, Amani Hooker, Kandre Diggs behind him.
have Roger McCreery in a zone waiting for him to cut across the middle?
I think the Titans need to employ that and they need Legerius Need
to play in this entire game or at minimum
he has to play more or at minimum the Titans have to do a better job
of how they deploy Legerius Sneed on the snaps
that he's going to be able to play because he played 21 snaps last week
and I could swear to you that all of them came in the first half
and then he never played again.
Like, that's not the answer.
I want to see him play the first drive of the game.
I want to see him play right before halftime.
I want to see him play on the opening drive after halftime.
I want to see him play on the last couple of drives of the game.
If you know, it's like it reminds me a peewee basketball growing up, there was rules.
Every player had to play two quarters.
At least three minutes of two quarters.
Well, you're not going to play your best play.
in the three first quarters of the game
and then be stuck having to play your scrubs in the fourth quarter.
That's not the way to do it.
You play your scrubs at the very beginning of the second quarter
and at the very end of the third quarter
so that your best players can finish both halves.
That's not a groundbreaking idea.
You know what I mean?
So, Ligerius Need is the number one question
on the defense, how much is he going to be able to play?
Are the Titans going to start to ramp him up even more?
Because in this matchup with these two wide receivers, they absolutely must.
And then Jeffrey Simmons.
Jeffrey Simmons is going to be the number one player that I'm watching for in this game.
And you know why?
Because the Rams have some massive injuries on the offensive line.
Both, both of their interior offensive linemen
are banged up.
Both of them, including Steve Avila.
I think it's Kevin Dodson as well.
They both have ankle injuries, I believe it is, lower body injuries nonetheless.
And they're weak to week, not even day to day.
Yeah, Kevin Dotson is the other guy.
Okay, sometimes my brain is like, is that right?
And then I freak out about it.
But I know this stuff.
Okay, I know.
But anyway, do you guys,
remember when Jeffrey Simmons had that three sack performance against the Rams in
2021. Kevin Byard had the interception. It was one of my favorite Tennessee Titans games of all
time. I said sit everybody. They're not going to win and everyone got mad at me. But I'll never
forget it. But in that game, I remember Jeffrey Simmons getting that sack
rubbing his belly and going one, two, three. He dominated that game. Outright
dominated. That's what the Titans need from Big Jeff this week. If the Rams are missing,
one or both of those interior offensive linemen?
They have to take advantage.
They have to.
I mean, Bo Limmer is in there right now.
Coleman Shelton, who the Titans played against last year,
I think he was with the Bears.
We know that he's not a great player.
The Titans have to take advantage of the interior offensive line.
So can this Tennessee Titans defense do that?
Will Lagerius Sneed play more in a big matchup?
Will Jeffrey Simmons be able to continue his high-level play from week one?
That's my second question for the Titans heading into week two.
But now, my final question is, can Brian Callahan bounce back?
And I got to tell you guys, my answer is sure, he can.
Do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you
by Mazda.
Mazda crafts cars for those who do more than simply move.
Mazda delivers confidence with every ride
they have more I-IHS top safety pick awards
than anyone else as of August 2025.
You can feel the Japanese craftsmanship in every detail
from the metallic accents to the available Napa leather upholstery.
You can make every drive feel like anything but an everyday drive.
smooth handling to intuitive controls, you get it all with Mazda.
I love Mazda. I got a Mazda in the garage right now.
Really enjoy driving it. I agree.
The interior, the feel of everything.
It's a fantastic experience.
And like the Titans players,
Mazda sweats every detail
because when you make every move count
impossible becomes irrelevant.
It's Mazda. Move and be moved
Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast talking about my biggest questions for the Titans heading into week two against the Los Angeles Rams.
We talked about the Titans inability to protect Cam Ward and how that went down.
why the offensive line is maybe just as big of a question
as anything else for the Titans we talked about
two specific players on defense
who I think have to have a good game
and whether or not they'll deliver.
But now I do want to talk about Brian Callahan.
All right.
And I just want to say this.
Brian Callahan can bounce back.
I know that it seems insane.
I know that it seems insane to say that.
But Brian Callahan can absolutely bounce back.
let me just say this
I like to play this game
close your eyes
just close your eyes for a moment
walk with me as the kids say
if the Titans go out
and beat the Rams
let's say the Titans win
23 to 17
or 23 to 20 over the ramps
Cam looks good
defense is making plays
they win the ball game
the pressure on Brian Callahan
drops
insanely.
It jumps off the mountain.
At the end of the day,
I have said all offseason
Callahan's the biggest question mark.
We don't know that he's an NFL head coach.
And then when he comes out in week one
and delivers the coaching performance that he did,
it basically confirms all of that concern, right?
But the reality is
winning cures all.
I said this on the Tennessee Titans squad show on Tuesday morning
with the legend Brad Hopkins and my guy Julian Misenone,
but winning cures everything.
The Titans play the Colts in week three.
They play the Texans in week four.
I feel more confident right now
that the Titans can win those games,
especially the Texans one,
than I did before the season.
I thought the Titans would beat the Colts.
in that game. I thought they lose to the Texans.
I still think the Titans
beat the Colts. I'm sorry.
You guys
can buy it if you want.
I do not buy the Indianapolis
Colts being good. The Dolphins
just suck. They're
a soulless, rudderless, lifeless
team.
All right? And Mike McDaniel is
an endangered species. Okay?
He's going to be the first head coach fired if he
if Brian Callahan
doesn't do anything else crazy.
Like, I'm still betting on Mike McDaniel
to be the first head coach fired in the NFL this season.
Brian Callahan has the second best odds, though.
But my point is,
if the Titans beat the Rams at home,
which, again, I have a little confidence.
They might be able to do it.
And then they go to Indianapolis and win.
And then they take on the Houston Texan,
well, the indie game is at home at first.
but they go to Indy and win
then they beat the Texans
who the Texans scored nine points
yeah the Texans defense is incredible
but like we said all all season
and I know most of you guys agree
the Texans have the worst offensive line
in the NFL maybe
and I don't trust their new
offensive coordinator Nick Cayley either
I think the Texans got worse
over the all season I didn't pick them to win the division
I picked the Jags to win the division
I don't think the Texans are as good
as people I've thought they've been the last couple of years
they're due for a regression here
so
I know it's hard right now
but if the Titans go through the
first month of the season and they leave
3 and 1
with a win over the Rams
and two division wins
the Callahan hot seat talk
vanishes overnight
so I just want to say
and what's frustrating to me is
and it's not most of you guys
so I don't mean to insult the people who listen to my stuff
you know what I mean
because the people who are saying these dumb things to me
probably don't even listen to my stuff
they could be trolling for all I know
but
I've seen people say stuff like
you know
Brian Callahan has to be fired right now
and
and that's just
it's just not going to happen
Brian Callahan isn't going to get fired after one game.
He's going to be given an opportunity
to show that he can bounce back from his own mistakes.
We want players to bounce back.
Brian Callahan is going to be given an opportunity
to bounce back and show,
hey, that was a terrible performance.
I messed up, but I am competent.
I am ready to go,
and I can be the future of this football team
at the head coaching spot.
Whether he does bounce back or not
is the big question.
but let's not pretend like Brian Callahan is cooked already
and also frustrating to me is that when I say that
I say Brian Callahan should not give up play calling duties
we don't know that Nick Holes or Bohard agree or any better
than Brian Callahan and if Brian Callahan doesn't call plays
then why is he the head coach in the first place
he's not a good leader he doesn't have anything to do with the defense
He doesn't have anything to do with the special teams.
That's why he hired Bones Fossil
and why he hired Dynard Wilson
so that they could just handle that for him.
So what's he doing?
Just sitting there twiddling his thumbs on the sideline
why Nick Holes calls plays?
And let me say this.
Brian Callahan isn't the only person involved
in deciding what plays get called.
Like, it's a group effort on offense
with Bill Callahan, his dad, who's the run game coordinator,
with Nick Holes, who is the offensive coordinator.
with Bo Hardegree, who is the quarterback coach, with Mike McCoy, who is a senior offensive assistant.
They all sit down and talk about which plays would be good to run.
So it's not like if you change play callers to Nick Holes or Mike McCoy or Bo Hardegree or whatever
that all of a sudden the Titans are going to run totally different plays
and sequence things totally different and the opening script is going to be totally different.
All of those dudes that you want to call plays, they're involved too.
So I hate hearing that.
It's annoying to me, quite honestly, because it doesn't make a lot of sense.
But also, when I said that,
I had people in my comment saying, oh, so you're backtracking already.
Brian Callahan sucked against the Denver Broncos.
He blew it.
He lost the game.
It's almost 100% his fault.
That is a separate statement entirely from,
I still don't think Brian Callahan should give up play calling duties.
Brian Callahan lost the Titans the game
is a totally different sentence and thought
than Brian Callahan should give up play calling.
At no point in time during my criticism
of Brian Callahan coming out of that game
did I say I think he should give up play calling duties?
No, he just needs to be better at that.
He just needs to be better.
That's what he needs to do.
If you're going to strip play calling duties from him
and emasculate him to the entire team and coaching
staff, just fire him then.
And if you're in the comment section right now
saying, sure then, Tyler,
fire him then. Okay, I at least
respect that. I at least respect
that. But the idea to strip play
calling duties from him, like that's going to
make him a better head coach or more valuable
to the Titans, it's just
asinine. You know?
It's not like Brian Callahan would have challenged
that or Brian Callahan wouldn't
have wanted to be aggressive.
Nicole's even said they wanted to get aggressive on the
goal line. So again, it's not like
what we saw that annoyed us with the coaching on Sunday
will change just because Nick Holes is calling plays
instead of Brian Callahan.
And just because I was critical of Brian Callahan,
rightfully so, against the Broncos,
doesn't mean that I think that he should be fired right now
and that they should take play calling duties away from him.
No, they should give Brian Callahan to the Patriots game.
They should give Brian Callahan to the bye week
and see if he's able to bounce back.
he? This is a tough
matchup but I don't think it's insane to think
that the Titans could pull off an upset here against
the Rams and as a matter of fact
I might be leaning there
so my three
biggest questions by far for this team
heading into week two as we start to
get ready and preview this Rams game
over the next few days
will the offensive line
correct themselves quickly against
another tough test
will the Titans two best defensive players
Jeffrey Simmons and Legerius Sneed
keep their level of play and will Sneed play more?
And can Brian Callahan bounce back
and not hurt his football team the way that he did?
And I think it's hilarious how the national media
has caught on to Brian Callahan.
He is under so much pressure
to deliver over the next couple of weeks.
You got the number one overall pick.
You got what you wanted.
My guy Julian Misanone said this.
You got what you wanted in your number one pick.
But now the attention's all going to be on you, Callahan.
So what are your biggest questions for the Titans
heading into week two against the Rams?
That's going to do it for me today, folks.
As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
