Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans NEXT BIG TARGETS: Attacking Tackle, Marcus Maye at Safety & Jerome Baker is a MUST

Episode Date: March 14, 2024

The Tennessee Titans have made waves in the first week of free agency, but they still have a ton of needs remaining. Most importantly, at offensive tackle. Names like Trent Brown, Mekhi Becton and Tyr...on Smith are options. Next, the Titans need help in the secondary and have been connected to two major names at safety in Justin Simmons and Marcus Maye. Finally, the defensive front needs a ton of bodies, but there are very few available while linebacker basically comes down to Jerome Baker or bust. Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videos Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. The Tennessee Titans have dominated week one of NFL free agency, but there's a lot of work to do. We're going to go over the positions that still need help,
Starting point is 00:01:15 starting with offensive tackle, where the Titans' biggest need still remains. Then we'll move into the secondary on defense, look at the front seven on defense, and I'll go over the best names available that fit. Before I dive into it, do want to thank you guys for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen each and every day. Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free. Make sure you get subscribed, stay subscribed. It's your team every day here on the Locked on Titans podcast. Again, throw a thumbs up on the video. Show's always free.
Starting point is 00:01:50 All I ask for in return is the press of a button. And thank you all so much to my everydayers out there tuning in Monday through Friday. Couldn't do it without you guys. But the Titans still have a ton of needs. The reality is they came into this free agency. They came into this offseason basically needing to rebuild most of the team. And while they've hit top tier wide receiver in Calvin Ridley, you get a backup quarterback, you get a number two running back,
Starting point is 00:02:16 you add Lloyd Cushenberry at center, you obviously add Chito at cornerback, you add Kenneth Murray at linebacker. They've added some pieces here and there, bringing Nick Folk back at kicker, but there are still a ton of needs left. I'm throwing up a graphic right now with some of the Titans' big needs and obviously offensive tackle. Number one need left and right tackle right now are available. They need another backup tight end. I think that needs to be a veteran.
Starting point is 00:02:42 We'll talk about those options. On defense, they really need some help. They need an edge rusher to go with Arden Key and Harold Landry. I think they need two defensive linemen like Danico Autry style defensive ends. They need two interior defensive linemen like nose tackle run stuffer guys for depth. They need another starting linebacker. They need another starting outside cornerback, and they need another starting safety. So the Titans still have a ton of needs remaining, but the biggest one, of course, is offensive tackle. And if we're honest with ourselves, there aren't a lot of great options at offensive tackle for the Tennessee Titans. I thought Michael and Wenyu, I thought Jonah Williams were the best options considering price and risk and versatility
Starting point is 00:03:25 to play different spots on the offensive line, especially with Jonah Williams being able to play both tackle spots. But Jonah Williams, basically immediately after Calvin Ridley signs, Jonah Williams goes to the Arizona Cardinals. I would imagine that was a domino effect where the Titans did have some money for Jonah Williams. But once they knew they were getting Calvin Ridley, well, now we don't have the money for Jonah Williams anymore.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Jonah Williams is like, okay, fine. I'm going over to Arizona. They were offering me the second most money anyways. But that's a good thing for the Titans because I think that solidifies that Arizona is going to take a wide receiver, which is what I thought all along. But either way, there aren't a lot of great options at offensive tackle, but the names that stand out the most,
Starting point is 00:04:06 number one, Trent Brown. Listen, Trent Brown is probably better fit for a gap scheme. But I was doing some more research recently, and the Bengals ran more gap runs at times last year. So they started evolving to have more gap runs in their scheme. Maybe Trent Brown isn't as bad of a fit as I initially thought, but maybe he still is. Either way, Trent Brown is a good player. He can play left tackle. He can play right tackle. I think that's key for the Titans to have that versatility going into the NFL draft so they
Starting point is 00:04:38 don't have to pigeonhole themselves. He's 30 years old. He's a strong player. He's got some weight issues. There have been contract stuff tied to his weight, making sure he keeps it down old he's a strong player he's got some weight issues there have been contract stuff tied to his weight making sure he keeps it down uh he was a healthy scratch at the end of the season in New England so there might be some personality issues in there but at this point the pickings are slim for the Titans and Trent Brown would be at least a starting level offensive tackle because there aren't a lot of those left Mak Mekhi Becton would be the next name. Look, we know I've talked about Mekhi Becton. I am not a big fan of Mekhi Becton as an option.
Starting point is 00:05:12 But at this point, with the better options off the board for the Titans, Mekhi Becton on a one-year deal may make some sense. But he does have a visit with the Cincinnati Bengals. And the odds are that the Titans aren't going to be able to pull Mekhi Becton at this point. He'll have better options out there. Another name, of course, that we have to talk about is Teron Smith. And I know that he's the most talented offensive tackle available.
Starting point is 00:05:39 But 33 years old, multiple injuries, only played 30 of the last 67 games, probably going to want the most money out of all of these offensive linemen. I just don't think that's a route that the Tennessee Titans need to go in. The only other options are in a tier below. You have Josh Jones, the former first-round pick, who hasn't really lived up to that potential in Arizona, went to Houston and was a backup. To me, you bring in Josh Jones,
Starting point is 00:06:08 that's, you know, that's like adding Sadiq Charles. Like, you're not adding a starter there. Is Josh Jones significantly better than Dylan Radins or Nicholas Petit Ferrer or Jalen Duncan? I don't know. So, is that even worth it? The only other option here is Donovan Smith. He was the starting left tackle for Kansas City last year.
Starting point is 00:06:27 He gets too aggressive and goes outside and gets beat on the inside all the time, and then it leads to penalties. I don't think that Donovan Smith is a great option for the Titans, but at least he's a starting level tackle. So you see they need to attack offensive tackle quickly because after those options go off the board, you're looking at George Fant. And I'm a fan of George Fant.
Starting point is 00:06:50 I would be okay with bringing him in. But at that point, if you don't take a chance on Makai Beckton, if you don't get Trent Brown, if you don't get Tyron Smith, you're not giving yourself a certified starter at offensive tackle. And I think the Titans needed to get one of those in free agency. So they need to attack offensive tackle very quickly this weekend at tight end. That's another position of need for the Tennessee Titans on offense outside of offensive tackle. I think CJ Uzama makes a ton of sense. I think Chris Manhurts from the Denver Broncos is a
Starting point is 00:07:23 blocking tight end. Makes a lot of sense. Jack Stoll isurts from the Denver Broncos is a blocking tight end. Makes a lot of sense. Jack Stoll is a guy who, not going to give you a lot in the passing game, came from Philadelphia, but he's a blocking tight end through and through. So I think those guys do make sense for the Tennessee Titans as a third string backup tight end. Tight end B in two tight end formations on early downs when you need a blocking tight end. I think CJ Uzama, Chris Manhurts, Jack Stahl,
Starting point is 00:07:50 those are guys that make sense for the Tennessee Titans. But defense, defense needs a ton of help. And remember, guys, the Titans aren't going to be able to solve all of these issues in one offseason. But there are definitely some options on the defensive side of the ball that make some sense. And in the secondary, specifically at safety, we got some new reports about a name the Titans could be interested in
Starting point is 00:08:15 or are interested in. So I'm going to go over that, plus go into the front seven as well before I dive into it, though. We're talking about the Tennessee Titans' remaining needs in free agency. What do they need to attack next? Of course, we talked about offensive tackle and how the options are slim there,
Starting point is 00:10:08 and the Titans are going to have to move quickly if they want a starting level offensive tackle. But they have a lot of holes on the defensive side of the ball as well that we're going to get into. Let me know your pick for offensive tackle down below, and then follow along with me here as we go through the defense and let me know what options you think are best. Before we continue breaking down the remaining needs in free agency,
Starting point is 00:10:28 I do want to thank you for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen each and every day. Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free. Make sure you get subscribed, stay subscribed to the number one Tennessee Titans podcast in the world. It's been a great Titans podcast in the world. It's been a great week here on the show.
Starting point is 00:10:49 We're going to get a lot more free agency news next week, and it won't be long before it's time to dive into our 2024 Locked on Titans NFL Draft Preview Series. So very excited for that. But throwing the remaining needs back up on the screen, we talked offense. On defense, the Titans need major help in the secondary. They need another starting cornerback. They need another starting safety.
Starting point is 00:11:10 They also have needs in the front seven as well. But we are going to start in that secondary where I think the Titans have the most rumors and have the most news as to who they could be targeting. And we got more news from Diana Rossini about someone the Titans are interested in, and it's safety Marcus May. So Marcus May played for the Jets and actually has a tie to Denard Wilson. When Marcus May played his best football in his NFL career, it was when he was with the
Starting point is 00:11:38 New York Jets when he had Denard Wilson as his defensive back coach and passing game coordinator. So I think there is a connection there. The Titans are interested in Marcus May. You may be asking yourself though, Tyler, what happened to Justin Simmons? We've been talking about Justin Simmons. Look, Justin Simmons would be a great fit for the Tennessee Titans. I think he's one of the most talented safeties still remaining. I think it's him and Cameron Curl in terms of who's the most talented options out there. And the Titans have had interest in Justin Simmons, but here is the reality.
Starting point is 00:12:08 And it's like I just said to you guys when we talked about Jonah Williams. The Titans went out and gave $50 million guaranteed dollars to Calvin Ridley. Alright? To me, it is no coincidence that the Titans were interested in Joe Flacco. But then all of a sudden, they signed Mason Rudolph, who is, you know, one-third of the price of Joe Flacco. It's no surprise to me that I think the Titans, this is not reported, but I think the Titans had interest in Jonah Williams.
Starting point is 00:12:38 And as soon as the Calvin Ridley news comes out, well, Jonah Williams goes to Arizona. In this scenario, I think the Titans had money to give to Justin Simmons comes out, well, Jonah Williams goes to Arizona. In this scenario, I think the Titans had money to give to Justin Simmons, but once they got Calvin Ridley, they didn't have the money to pay Justin Simmons anymore. And, speaking of Diana Rossini, who reported on the interest on Marcus May, someone replied to Diana Rossini's tweet about Marcus May and the Titans and said, what happened to Justin Simmons?
Starting point is 00:13:06 And she just responded with dollar signs. So there you go. You have your answers. The Titans were looking at Justin Simmons, but once they paid Calvin Ridley, they didn't have the money to pay Justin Simmons anymore, so they have turned their attention to Marcus May. Now, I would imagine that another guy who I really like
Starting point is 00:13:24 and who I've liked all along is a safety option and that's Cameron Curl coming over from Washington who had the connection to Chris Harris, the Titans defensive back coach. Cameron Curl is probably someone like Justin Simmons who is just wanting too much money for what the Titans can do. Guys, we sit around and we talk about cap space, how much cap space the Titans have,. Guys, we sit around and we talk about cap space, how much cap space the Titans have, all of that. But what actually matters is cash.
Starting point is 00:13:50 Amy Adams Strunk, the owner, can't give out $300 million in guaranteed cash, okay? So what actually matters to teams a lot of the time, the budget that teams are working under is not the cap space with void years and bonus
Starting point is 00:14:06 structure and all that. You can manipulate the cap space. Tony Pollard got a three-year $24 million deal, $4 million on the cap. Chido got a two-year $26 million deal, $7 million on the cap. You can manipulate the cap space. You can't manipulate the money, the cash that these owners have to pay out for these guaranteed deals. All right. So keep that in mind here. It's not that the Titans don't have cap room to go get Justin Simmons or Cam Curl. It's that they don't have the cash to do it. Okay. So keep that in mind here. If the Titans can't pay Justin Simmons or Cameron Curl, which I don't think that they will, I hope that they here. If the Titans can't pay Justin Simmons or Cameron Curl, which I don't think that they will, I hope that they do, that would be great,
Starting point is 00:14:49 then Marcus May would be a cheaper option. And Marcus May is a guy who has had a ton of injuries. He struggled in coverage. He's more of an aggressive safety who comes downhill, will play physical. And again, in the Titans' new attacking system under Denard Wilson, that's probably what they're going to do. They're going to bring safeties down. They're going to blitz safeties.
Starting point is 00:15:10 They're going to blitz corners. They're blitzing their middle linebacker up the middle. So the Titans are just looking for physical, aggressive athletes. They were interested in Chauncey Gardner-Johnson as well. But hey, we're getting Calvin Ridley. We can't pay you. We got to move on from that. So to me, Marcus May would be a fit. Just his skill set in the Titans defense, it would be a fit.
Starting point is 00:15:33 But is he as good of a player as Justin Simmons or Cam Curl? No, probably not. All right. And there's more risk involved, but he's going to come at a lower price tag too. Again, the Titans cannot solve every issue this offseason. They can't solve safety. They can't solve corner. They can't solve D-line. They can't solve edge while they're trying to solve the offensive line at center, offensive tackle at wide receiver, but they can't solve everything. So safety may be a position where they take a one-year band-aid and then they try to revamp it in 2025 when they have more cap space and more draft picks to do so.
Starting point is 00:16:08 So if none of those options fit, bringing back Kayvon Wallace, I might be a fan of bringing back Kayvon Wallace no matter what because Wallace is more of a coverage guy. He can back up Imani Hooker. He can be that deep safety role. Maybe not a guy who you want coming down in the box. And if Kayvon Wallace is the only signing that they make it safety, then Imani Hooker can play back, or Kayvon Wallace can play back deep.
Starting point is 00:16:31 And Imani Hooker has shown he does have the ability to be that more forward safety that can be physical, man up on a tight end, play, you know, a hook zone, play out to the flats, stuff like that. I still think that would be a good fit. So Kayvon Wallace to me is fine. I do want to say Jamal Adams. I mean, I, Jamal Adams was in my hate tier, but with the slim pickings at safety now
Starting point is 00:16:54 and the options the Titans have, you know, maybe they bring in Jamal Adams as a third safety. You bring in Kayvon Wallace and Jamal Adams, let Jamal Adams function as a linebacker basically, and then you have Kayvon Wallace as your back deep coverage guy. It'll be interesting to see what they decide to do there, but it's obvious their price range at safety has gone down. You also got to look at cornerback here, and look, I think the LeJarius Sneed thing is over. I think that is another domino that has fallen based on the Calvin Ridley thing. The Titans were either going to give a big contract with $50 million guaranteed to Calvin Ridley, or they were going to give it to LeJarius Sneed in a trade. I think they decided to back away from the trade because the draft pick compensation was too expensive. Go after Calvin Ridley where we don't have to give up draft picks.
Starting point is 00:17:38 We can just give up a contract. So I think the LeJarius Sneed thing is kind of off the rails. That's kind of out the window now. Zavian Howard could make some sense for the Titans. Again, that's a one-year band-aid. That's not a solve long-term, but hey, cornerback is something the Titans probably are going to have to truly fix next year to get like a number one cornerback in the draft. I think that's the number edge and cornerback next year main targets for the Titans early in the draft. I think that's the number edge and cornerback next year. Main targets for the Titans early in the draft. But they may not be able to solve it.
Starting point is 00:18:09 So Kendall Fuller was an option, but he went to Miami on Thursday. I think some lower tier guys. Bringing back Adory Jackson, who played in Wink Martindale's attacking aggressive blitzing defense last year. I think that could make some sense. Rakia Sin, who played for Denard Wilson in Baltimore, I think makes some sense. Maybe you take a risk on a young guy who's still 25, like CJ Henderson, a former first-round pick.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Akela Witherspoon, like Rakia Sin, less upside, more of just a steady one-year veteran, but could be an option to fill that second cornerback spot. But we need to move into the front seven of the defense for the Titans because they need a lot there, including another starting lineback spot. But we need to move into the front seven of the defense for the Titans because they need a lot there, including another starting linebacker. So we're going to go over the options the Titans have there and the connection to Jerome Baker, which I think would be a perfect fit for them. Before we get into it, I do want to let you guys know that
Starting point is 00:19:01 today's episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Say goodbye to busted brackets because FanDuel lets you bet on every game of the tourney. Whether you're betting on a big upset or the number one seed, it's time to go dancing on America's number one sportsbook.

Starting point is 00:19:49 And bet on college hoops until they cut down the nets. Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. We're talking about the Tennessee Titans' remaining needs in free agency. We talked about offensive tackle. We talked about the secondary for the Titans. Now we need to get into the front seven of the defense. And we actually just got big news on a big piece in free agency in the defensive line. DJ Reader going to the Detroit Lions. The Titans were in on Reader,
Starting point is 00:20:40 but I don't think that was ever a realistic thing. I didn't want the Titans to pay, what, two years, you know, $28 million, you know, $13, $14 million a year for DJ Reader. It's two years, $27.5 million. According to the recent reporting, I would not want to pay that for a 30-year-old, two-down, run-stuffing defensive tackle.
Starting point is 00:21:04 So, to me, that wasn't a good move by the Titans anyway. So, DJ Reeder is off the board. I was going to talk about linebacker first, but since we're talking about interior defensive line, I think some other names that make sense for the Titans, Taven Bryant could make some sense. There aren't a lot of good options out there. Quite honestly, we saw guys like Roquan Davis get picked up, Quentin Jefferson get picked up, Paulo Furtacosta get picked up early on. I mean, Thierry Tartt?
Starting point is 00:21:33 Tartt is meeting with the Bengals, actually, because he might be a replacement for DJ Reader. There just aren't a lot of good interior defensive line options, and at this point, I would rather the Titans just completely ignore it until the second or third wave of free agency, get as cheap as possible there. And maybe you could draft somebody this year or next year to try to be someone you'd develop in that spot.
Starting point is 00:21:55 But I don't think the Titans needed to spend big on the interior defensive line at linebacker. Let's finally get into linebacker because while the Titans do need to interior defensive lineman, they need two pass-rushing defensive linemen. Danico Autry and T.R. Tartt think they need two bodies each at those
Starting point is 00:22:14 spots for depth purposes. The spot I really want to focus on is linebacker because the Titans need another starting linebacker. They have Kenneth Murray, who is a downhill, blitzing, athletic freak, aggressive, but he's not good in coverage. He doesn't have good awareness, understanding route concepts,
Starting point is 00:22:32 where to be, where to drop to. It's just not his strength. So I think they need to get somebody who does have that strength, and that's why Jerome Baker is the best option for the Tennessee Titans at linebacker. The Titans have interest in Jerome Baker. They should be taking a visit with him in the coming days. Here soon. Baker is a guy with great athleticism, great speed, who understands coverage.
Starting point is 00:22:56 He's not the most physical linebacker ever. He's not the best against the run, but he's a guy who does have coverage skills. He does have good awareness. He has all the skills that Kenneth Murray doesn't have, but he's an athlete as well. And I think he'll be on a cheap one year, two year contract. Like we saw with Kenneth Murray, there's not a lot of financial investment there. Linebacker is a position the Titans are not going to be able to fix this year. They need to focus on that next year. Next year needs to be a heavy defensive draft. You load up on wide receiver and offensive tackle this year. Next year, you really hit cornerback,
Starting point is 00:23:30 edge, safety, linebacker, D-line. You really load up on defense next offseason. But for right now, a one-year deal with Jerome Baker would make a ton of sense. But there are other options at linebacker as well. I just don't think they are as good of a fit. Devin White is more of a Kenneth Murray style linebacker. But maybe you have two of them and you're just bash brothers. We're coming downhill. We're trying to attack you. Yeah, you're going to pick us apart over the middle in coverage.
Starting point is 00:23:58 But we're going to be in your face while you do it. Isaiah Simmons is a guy who I've been a big fan of. But the Titans basically took that swing with Kenneth Murray. Isaiah Simmons is an athletic freak, like a true freak. 6'4", 230 pounds, 4'4 speed, like he is absolute animal, all right, when it comes to athleticism. But been moved around the defense too much, not sure where he actually fits, all that. So does Isaiah Simmons have the coverage skills and the awareness to be, you know, the guy next to Kenneth Murray? I think that's a dangerous game because they're similar players
Starting point is 00:24:33 who were busts on the rookie contract but have freakish athleticism. But, hey, at this point, why not take a dart throw? And I think Isaiah Simmons could maybe even be used a little bit like Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, like Kyle Hamilton from Baltimore because of his athleticism and size. So why not at this point, if you're not going to solve linebacker, why not take a shot? And then Tyrell Dodson played for Buffalo. I think he could be a cheap option. Maybe not as exciting as those guys, but you know, a solid player who could come in and fill that role. The Titans did bring back Jack Gibbons. They are going to have Otis Reese. They still do have Luke Gifford on the roster, so they
Starting point is 00:25:11 have some options at linebacker, but again, it's just not a position that's going to be solved this year. At edge or defensive line, whatever you want to call it, Chase Young still has a visit with the Titans. At this point, I think that's a move that they have to do. Another guy, Tyus Bowser, just got let go by the Ravens. He was a guy I liked coming out of the draft, but I mean, like four months ago, he was saying that he had
Starting point is 00:25:35 issues with coming back from, he had an Achilles injury, an ACL injury, and he wasn't healing right. So, I'm sure now he's healthy so he can get a contract. But that's a risk. And this name, people freaked out on Twitter when I mentioned this name. But Jadavian Clowney? Clowney is a guy who can play physical.
Starting point is 00:25:54 Clowney would be a perfect fit with Arden Key and Harold Landry. Landry is a speed guy who's kind of smaller but with great bend. Key is a slimmer guy with good athleticism, but long arms. Jadavion Clowney is a physical guy who can play against the run, who has good size and physicality and strength. I know that there's PTSD there, but you get Clowney for a cheap deal. You pair him back with Denard Wilson, who we had a great year with in Baltimore last year. I think that would make some sense.
Starting point is 00:26:25 I don't think that happens, but I think it would make sense. I really do. Another name that I would be looking at here, Eric Armstead, of course. There's been some rumored interest with the Titans, but I think that might be a Calvin Ridley domino as well. They're not going to have the money to pay Eric Armstead. He was fifth, the fifth highest graded pass rusher per pro football focus last year at his position,
Starting point is 00:26:49 but he also has missed 13 games the last two years. So there's risk there too. Emmanuel Ogba is a guy who could make some sense if he's healthy. Carl Lawson could make some sense if he's healthy as a pass rusher. Solomon Thomas has really fallen off in recent years, but there's the Rancart on San Francisco connection.
Starting point is 00:27:05 That would be good depth. I mentioned Taven Bryan already earlier. So there are some options on the D line, but man, they're going quick. And again, the Titans aren't going to be able to solve all their problems this all season. And we see on the defensive side of the ball, how they probably need a lot of one-year band-aids and they need to probably attack the defense.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Ooh, Corey Davis has applied for reinstatement from retirement. That is interesting. That is interesting. He's still under contract with the Jets. I'm not interested in Corey Davis. The Titans don't need any more wide receivers. They need to draft two wide receivers, and if anything, they need to trade Traylon Burts and still draft two wide receivers.
Starting point is 00:27:42 But with that being said, we've gone through every position on defense. We've talked about offensive tackle, tight end on offense, throwing the Titans' biggest remaining needs back up on the screen right now. They need a left tackle, a right tackle. They need another backup tight end. They need an edge rusher to go with Arden Key and Harold Landry. They need two defensive ends. They have Jeffrey Simmons at defensive tackle. They need two nose tackles They have Jeffrey Simmons at defensive tackle.
Starting point is 00:28:05 They need two nose tackles or at least another backup defensive tackle who can play DT behind Simmons and play some nose tackle. They need another starting linebacker. They need another starting cornerback on the outside with Chito on one side and then Roger McCreary in the slot. And they need another starting safety across from Imani Hooker and to play ahead of Elijah Moulton. So,
Starting point is 00:28:27 a lot of needs remaining for the Titans, but they have time, and they're going to add a lot of one-year players on one-year deals, cheap deals, where, you know, they're not paying the kind of money that we saw them pay recently for some of the big names. But, in theory,
Starting point is 00:28:49 I won't be back with you guys until Sunday night, Monday morning.
