Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans O-Line Questions: Radunz Should START, Right Tackle Concern & Left Side Potential

Episode Date: May 26, 2024

The Tennessee Titans needed an improved offensive in 2024 and while they have made some major improvements, there are still big questions on the right side. First, the right guard position has three m...ain challengers, but Dillon Radunz should get the start there even if he has not lived up to his draft expectations. Next, the right tackle spot is more concerning as Nicholas Petit-Frere as the favorite to start, but is still rehabbing last season's injury and his only true competition is Leroy Watson. Regardless of the concern though, Petit-Frere should start. Finally, the center to left tackle spots are set in stone and J.C. Latham is already proving he is made of what it takes to be great.Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=asc Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videos Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. Starting point is 00:01:33 nearly 25 years as a Tennessee Titans fanatic, a certified film junkie, breaking down the X's and O's with you every day. I've covered the team for Sports Illustrated, covered the team for USA Today, and I've been the host of the number one Tennessee Titans podcast for five years. Shout out to my everydayers out there tuning in Monday through Friday. Couldn't do it without you guys.
Starting point is 00:01:54 I have some great content planned for you guys this week. Tomorrow, I'm going to tell you why Will Levis is set to break out this year, why Calvin Ridley is wide receiver one, why Tajay Spears is running back one, and then we're going to preview OTA starting back up this week. But we got to talk about this offensive line. And look, there are big questions on the right side. Now on the left side, things are pretty solidified. From center to left tackle, we have JC Latham at left tackle, Peter Skowronski at left guard,
Starting point is 00:02:25 Lloyd Cushenberry at center. So I feel really good about the left side. And obviously that's super important with it being Will Levis' blind side. And I think more importantly than other quarterbacks for Will Levis, it's that much more imperative that he have a certified left side. I think that Will is a guy who wants to drive the ball down the field. He wants to make big plays. He wants to use his arm. You have to give him time. He's also a guy who's going to play a little recklessly. I think we know that now. He wants to play with physicality. He wants to try to put it on his shoulders. Maybe Brian Callahan can get him to dial that back a little bit, but making sure that the blind side for Will Levis is protected is great. On the right side, Will Levis can see that side, so he can see the pressure coming if the right side gets beat,
Starting point is 00:03:09 but that doesn't necessarily alleviate my concerns about that right side of the offensive line, and you look at right guard first, and I think there's a three-headed monster, you could say, at right guard competing for that open spot. Number one, you have Daniel Brunskill. Brunskill is the incumbent here. He played for the Titans last year, obviously, 14 games in 2023, but he did wear down at the end of the year, and I think that's something that we really have to consider is Daniel Brunskill is 30 years old, okay?
Starting point is 00:03:40 And in the final eight games of the year, he missed three of those games, and he played less than 25 snaps in two of those games. He only gave up two sacks and 26 pressures all year. He's okay in run blocking. But, again, you've got to worry about him wearing down. And at the end of the year, Mike Vrabel and his staff, they decided to go ahead and test out Calvin Throckmorton,
Starting point is 00:04:03 who they brought in in the middle of the year as someone who got cut by the Panthers. And they mentioned performance as a reason why they did that. So Daniel Brunskill is somebody who kind of wears down. And that's why I think that Dylan Radins should be the starter for the Tennessee Titans. He's going to be 26 years old. He's in the last year of his rookie contract, and he just looks so strong out at OTAs. Last year, he even said it himself that he was much stronger. Last year, he had finally gotten into a good rhythm with his strength and conditioning in the NFL,
Starting point is 00:04:36 and he looked stronger out there the way he was pushing people around. But he was still coming off the ACL tear that he had in his second year at the end of the year, week 15 in 2022. So, Radins came in last year, and he really struggled when he first got on the field. He gave up a sack in like four straight games. When he finally got back on the field after injury,
Starting point is 00:04:56 played a little left tackle, then got moved to right tackle, a little guard in there as well. But in the back half of the season, the last five games of the year when Radins was entrenched as the right tackle for the Titans, he only gave up one sack and seven pressures. He might have been the Titans' best offensive lineman, and that's a very low bar, of course, absolutely a very low bar, but he might have been the Titans' best offensive lineman the last third of the season. He did have a ton of penalties, 11 penalties, so that has to be cleaned up.
Starting point is 00:05:27 But with the new Titans regime with Brian Callahan and then, of course, Bill Callahan as offensive line coach, I think we've seen from their decisions they want more power. They want more powerful players. Where the Titans' previous staff wanted more agile players who could run that zone scheme. I think the Titans are going to have more of a multiple run scheme here. I think we've heard that from the coaching staff in the press conferences as well. So I think Dylan Radins as a more powerful, younger, healthier player than
Starting point is 00:05:56 Daniel Brunskill makes sense to be the starter at right guard. That's what I would like to see. I want Dylan Radins to finally get his shot. Get a true shot. Not getting jerked around the offensive line. You're playing left. You're playing right. You're playing guard. You're playing tackle. The Titans' previous coaching staff, I don't think,
Starting point is 00:06:13 ever gave Radins a chance to just chill at one spot and get better. And Radins has said that himself in press conferences, that it was hard for him to deal with being moved around all the time. And that was something he said while Mike Rabel was still employed. And he was willing to say that. So I don't think that Radins and the previous coaching staff ever saw eye to eye. I don't think Radins was ever happy with the way that he was used by the previous staff. So I would like to see the Titans let Dylan Radins be that right guard. Let him get a shot from day one to be the starter there. Now you have to talk about the guy the Titans brought in at right guard.
Starting point is 00:06:48 And that is Sadiq Charles. Played for Washington the last few years. He's around Dylan Radin's age. He's a little bit younger. Radin's is 26 now or will be 26 once the season starts. Sadiq Charles is only 24. So two years younger and he is a bigger player than than both Radins and Daniel Brunskill. Six foot four, 320 pounds.
Starting point is 00:07:09 He's just a bigger, stronger guy in his play style. Played 35 games in his career, 11 of those games he played last year for Washington, and that is something to worry about with Sadiq Charles. He's missed games, hasn't been a guy who's been consistently on the field, but neither is Dylan Radins. And at the end of the year, neither was Daniel Brunskill. So I don't think that's something that's going to cancel out Sadiq Charles' ability to fight for right guard.
Starting point is 00:07:33 But he did give up four sacks, 37 pressures last year, and three penalties in those 11 games. So Sadiq Charles, while he fits the profile of the Titans system, I think the best out of these three guys just in a vacuum, he just hasn't been a very good player. Now, Bill Callahan wanted Sadiq Charles. Like that is something that has already been said by the coaching staff, already been said by Bill Callahan.
Starting point is 00:07:58 Bill Callahan called it a no-brainer to go out and get Sadiq Charles because of his potential. He's a guy who's very up and down, very inconsistent, but the power that he plays with when he plays well, it's just hard to replicate that. It's hard to teach that. He's just a naturally powerful guy. So I personally, while Daniel Brunskill may be the incumbent,
Starting point is 00:08:19 and I don't even want to say the favorite, but the incumbent here, I think that Dylan Radins and Sadiq Charles should be over Daniel Brunskill in terms of who should get that right guard spot. I think that Brunskill could be the backup center for the Titans and be the number one swing offensive lineman for the Titans on the interior. I think that would be the best role for Brunskill going forward. But I really want Dylan Radins to get that shot. But I think Sadiq Charles is actually the number one challenger.
Starting point is 00:08:46 But again, Radins should get the start. He should get his true opportunity. Let me know down below who you think should start at right guard. We got to talk about right tackle where the battle is even more concerning. Before we do, though, do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook. Look, right now, it's winner-take-all time in the NBA and the NHL, and FanDuel's giving you a shot to bring home a big win of your own.

And I don't think that I can take watching the Boston Celtics win. So I'm absolutely going to hammer that. Love the
Starting point is 00:09:49 Mavericks with two playmakers, good role players, up 2-0 right now. I think plus odds there, that's a great deal. Again, make sure you visit FanDuel.com slash LockedOnFanDuel. America's number one sportsbook. Titans fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
Starting point is 00:10:28 We are recapping the first week of OTAs, full team OTAs for the Titans. And I want to do that through the frame of the offensive line. We talked about right guard again. Let me know down below in the comments on YouTube who you think should start at right guard. You can follow me on Twitter at Tic Tac Titans. And let me know who you think should start at right guard there. But we got to talk about right tackle as well. And at the end of the show, I'm going to give you guys some stories
Starting point is 00:10:47 about J.C. Latham from OTAs that make me think that he is ready for greatness. Again, a lot of content coming your way this week. I'm going to talk about Will Levis tomorrow and why I'm just so hype about his breakout potential. I'm going to tell you why I think that Calvin Ridley is wide receiver one and why I think Tajay Spears is running back number one before we preview this week's OTAs in a couple of days. So a lot of great content coming your way.
Starting point is 00:11:13 Make sure that you're an everydayer here on the Locked on Titans podcast. You get subscribed. Stay subscribed for free Tennessee Titans content all year long. Locked on Titans is part of the Locked on Podcast Network. But with that being said, let's talk about right tackle. Because whereas right guard with Daniel Brunskill, Dylan Radin, Sadiq Charles, while that spot is still open, and of course I think Dylan Radin should start there, right tackle is
Starting point is 00:11:39 more concerning. Like, I like all of those options. So whoever ends up being the starter at right guard between Brunskill or Radins or Charles, I'm going to be excited about it. I'm going to be happy about it and I'm going to be ready to watch that player play. But right tackle. And some of the info we got from week one of OTAs makes me even more concerned at the end of the day. Number one, Nicholas Petit-Ferret. end of the day. Number one, Nicholas Petit Ferrer. That's the favorite.
Starting point is 00:12:07 That is, you could even call him the incumbent, I guess, although he missed a lot of time last year. But NPF is the guy who, if you were right now, the starting offensive line right now, he would be the starting right tackle. That would make the most sense here. But he's still rehabbing. According to Brian Callahan at OTAs this week,
Starting point is 00:12:27 Nicholas Petit-Ferrer is still a guy working inside rehabbing his shoulder injury from last year, and it was an injury that knocked him out for the season after playing only three games. He played three games last year. When he came back from his gambling suspension, 2023 was a disaster year for NPF at the end of the day. I mean, you get the gambling suspension. He seemed really caught off guard by that. Come in, play absolutely terribly. I mean, he played awful in those three games that he played.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Gave up three sacks, 11 pressures, four penalties. And while you would be like, okay, it was a crazy year. He got moved to left tackle he played right tackle the year before came in off the gambling suspension like there's a lot of factors going against him but you look at 2022 his rookie year he started 16 games gave up five sacks 35 pressures had eight penalties like it was a rookie year with ups and downs, but that's not something that really inspires confidence that this guy is a starting right tackle in the NFL, right? Like, we still don't know whether NPF is truly a starting level player in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:13:36 And the three games that we got from him last year don't make you feel any better about it at the end of the day. But he did have a full season as a starter, as a rookie, and that sort of experience is absolutely incredible for a young player. That's what you want. So if he can get healthy and get off on the right foot, then maybe he can improve from his rookie year and just decent right tackle play for the Titans would be absolutely critical
Starting point is 00:14:04 with what we're expecting through the other four spots. But when you're still rehabbing that shoulder injury that knocked him out for the entire back half of the season after those three games last year, like, that gives me concern. Offensive line is the position that is most reliant on cohesion, that is most reliant on cohesion, that is most reliant on chemistry. The offensive line works as a group more than any other position group in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:14:30 I would say that the secondary is probably next in that conversation. But the fact that NPF is still rehabbing an upper body injury, if it were an Achilles, if it were an ACL, if it were something like that, then I would be like, okay, yeah, I expect it.
Starting point is 00:14:47 But, you know, it's a shoulder injury, and he's still rehabbing. So the fact that the Titans are into their second week of OTAs with mandatory minicamp coming up in the first week of June, and MPF is still not on the field, he's not even on the side field working, that is concerning for me. And it's going to set him back. So you look, who could be somebody who could take that right tackle spot in the meantime? And for me, it's Leroy Watson. All right. So the Titans traded for Leroy Watson from the Browns traded their, their top seventh round pick. I think it was 221
Starting point is 00:15:21 to the Browns to get Leroy Watson. And that, like Sadiq Charles, that is a hand pick from Bill Callahan. And that's what makes it so intriguing. So we talked about Leroy Watson before when the Titans traded for him before the draft, but Watson will be 26 in June, whereas, you know, NPF is 25. So not a huge gap there in terms of age, which makes it intriguing. Watson only played five in five games in 2023, started one of those games, and only had more than 10 snaps in one of those games. But, but, gave up zero sacks, zero pressures, zero penalties, and 60 total snaps.
Starting point is 00:16:06 So there is potential there with Watson being a former tight end who was converted to offensive line once he got to the NFL. He was an undrafted free agent in 2022, played a little bit in 2023, and now he might have his shot. I personally would not, I would be worried if Leroy Watson won the right tackle battle, but with a stamp from Bill Callahan, who is clearly interested in his skill set, I think that he has the potential. Again, as a converted tight end, he's got great athleticism, but you watch him play and he plays with good power. So this might be one of those situations
Starting point is 00:16:42 where the Titans find a diamond in the rough. And I think the fact that they were willing to trade one of their seventh round picks, I was saying that the Titans needed to draft two offensive tackles leading up to the Leroy Watson trade. They needed two offensive tackles out of a really good offensive tackle class. But for the Titans to pass on the opportunity to take two, trade a pick and go get Leroy Watson. I think that tells you quite a bit. So to me, I think NPF needs to start. He should be the starter. He's got more upside. He's a younger player. He should get the opportunity. I think that Leroy Watson definitely is somebody
Starting point is 00:17:16 who could come in and take that spot if NPF doesn't get back on the field soon. And that's something that we all should be paying a ton of attention to as OTAs continue and as mandatory minicamp comes. When is NPF going to be healthy enough to get out there, hit the sleds, learn the technique? He's just getting so far behind by not being out there. And with him still rehabbing the injury, it's concerning. The last two names that I want to mention here is Dark Horses for the right tackle spot. One, you got to mention Jalen Duncan, but I was not high on the Jalen Duncan pick when it happened. I thought it was a terrible selection.
Starting point is 00:17:50 I didn't trust Jalen Duncan's work ethic. And last year, nine sacks allowed 36 pressures, four penalties and only eight games. Look, he's just not it. He's just not it. I wouldn't even be surprised if Jalen Duncan doesn't even make the roster. Finally, I do want to mention Jono Juku, the undrafted free agent in 2023. I think there was some hope for him last year, but at the end of the day, I don't know that his profile fits.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Jono Juku is already 25, 26 years old, so an older guy for being only in his second year now. I just don't think that he has the talent to truly compete here. So to me, it's between NPF, it's between Leroy Watson. I want to see NPF get the start because I think there's just potential there and let's see what he can do. But if he doesn't get out on the field soon, I'm even more concerned. And with a guy like Chris Hubbard, who played well last year for the Titans,
Starting point is 00:18:39 getting signed off the free agent market, there really is no other free agents that would make me feel any better about that right tackle spot. But rather than talking about spots that are concerning, let's talk about some greatness ahead for JC Latham because we got some great stories from multiple sources about Latham and his work ethic already. So excited to tell you guys about that. Before I do, though, do want to let you know
Starting point is 00:19:04 that today's episode is brought to you by GameTime. The GameTime app is the best place to buy tickets. Make sure to let me know down below in the comments who you think should get both of those spots as the starters. Now I want to talk about center to left side, and especially the left guard
Starting point is 00:20:53 and left tackle spots with Peter Skowronski and JC Latham, because we're just getting some great, great information about them through the first week of OTAs. I can't wait to talk about that with you guys. Before I do, I do want to remind you that Locked On has launched the first ever National Sports 24-7 streaming channel. It's on YouTube and now it's also available on Amazon Fire TV and the Free Fire TV channels app. It's called

Starting point is 00:21:35 And as a reminder, OTAs pick back up in the middle of the week. I'm going to be previewing them, telling you what to watch for later this week. Also tomorrow, I'm going to talk about Will Levis' potential, why I think Tajay Spears is RB1 and Calvin Ridley is wide receiver one. You aren't going to want to miss those. So make sure that you're tuning into the Locked on Titans podcast every
Starting point is 00:21:56 single day. But with that being said, JC Latham, man. Look, I had my reservations early in the draft process. He didn't do any athletic testing, which a guy that big. There are definitely some horror stories in there. You weren't certain about Alabama offensive linemen.
Starting point is 00:22:14 Can he transition from right tackle to left tackle? A lot of that, to me, is quelled. The concern is quelled with work ethic. Working. Caring. Passion. And I have seen some people, look, it's not anybody reputable,
Starting point is 00:22:34 in my opinion, but I have seen some people compare J.C. Latham to Isaiah Wilson. Panda. The Titans' all-time top 10 bust in NFL history of a right tackle in Isaiah Wilson. Panda. The Titans all-time top 10 bust in NFL history of a right tackle in Isaiah Wilson. And it's just absurd. It literally doesn't make
Starting point is 00:22:52 any sense. I made a joke on Twitter the other day that comparing those two players is lazier than Isaiah Wilson himself. Now, that's probably not true because that's quite the high bar to get over, but it just drives home my point that if you're comparing J.C. Latham to Isaiah Wilson, you know
Starting point is 00:23:10 absolutely nothing about J.C. Latham. You're not even trying to understand, and I'm going to drive that point home with two sources telling the same story about J.C. Latham. One, Brian Callahan on the Bustin' with the Boys podcast told a story recently about how he looked outside at 5 p.m. So they go through practice early in the morning, and then you have meetings and workouts, and at 5 p.m., Brian Callahan looks out his office and sees J.C JC Latham running
Starting point is 00:23:45 100 yard sprints and hitting the sled I mean I mean Isaiah Wilson wouldn't even come to practice so what are we even doing here and Brian Callahan went on to say that he went over and asked
Starting point is 00:24:05 Rand, like, should I go stop him? Like, you know, like, and Rand was like, let him go a little bit. Let him go a little bit. You know what I mean? And it makes sense. Look, it's early in the all season process. You don't want to wear yourself down. The NFL season is more rigorous. I mean, coming from the SEC, it's probably as close as you can get, but the NFL season is long. It's a marathon. It's heavy. It'll break you down as a rookie trying to make that jump. Maybe you don't want to overexert yourself this early in the summer, okay? But the reality here is J.C. Latham is going to work tirelessly to be the best player that he could possibly be, and the Titans have a long line of good left tackle play. I mean, think about it.
Starting point is 00:24:50 You know, from Michael Ruse, Taylor LeJuan, there's a ton of great left tackles that have played for the Titans. J.C. Latham is in line to be that next guy. There is zero concern to me at this stage about his work ethic and how dedicated he's going to be to his craft. So we got another story from Coach Mack, who works for the Titans, who has coached the Titans and a former head coach in the NFL for the Cardinals. Been in the NFL forever.
Starting point is 00:25:18 Coach Mack, great storyteller, all that. And Coach Mack went on 104.5 The Zone and said, J.C. Latham was out there working in the rain. And eventually, Rand Carthon had to go out there and tell him, like, come inside, big fella. Come on. Like I said, you know, you got plenty of time to work. But Latham's trying to create a routine. So it's something that he was doing every day. Going out there trying to make that routine and work from sunup to sun down.
Starting point is 00:25:52 And again, that just makes you so optimistic and so excited about what he could be at this level for the Titans. Like, any concern that I had about Latham on tape, watching the tape of the draft process and continuing to dig in alleviated that for me. Any concern about all field commitment, any of that completely quelled now based on what we're here. Like, I don't know how you couldn't be through the roof, over the moon, excited about J.C. Latham. But also Peter Skowronski.
Starting point is 00:26:16 I talked about it before, a couple of weeks ago, my everydayers will remember, but Peter Skowronski looks huge. And he even talked about it after practice at OTAs that, you know, he's added 15 pounds and he was probably playing 20 pounds underweight last year after the appendectomy. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:26:35 it's hard to keep weight on during the NFL season because you're working so hard. So coming from the college season where you're doing all the pre-draft drills instead of the football stuff, that keeps your weight down. And then having the appendectomy in the middle of the year and then trying to get back on track and having a terrible offensive line around you with terrible offensive line coaching from Jason Hotaling. It just put Peter Skowronski in a terrible situation.
Starting point is 00:27:02 He even said super up and down year for him. Super up and down year and him. Super up and down year and he wants to get better, but look at him. Skowronski is so much bigger, so much stronger. And he talked about working with Bertha and Olga, the sleds from Bill Callahan
Starting point is 00:27:17 and how it's tough. It's hard and it humbles you. And you could just tell that he's in a great mind state. He's physically right. And I just think that Latham and Skowronski on the left side are going to protect Will Levis for nearly a decade. They just look like they are so ready to go and with the coaching they're getting now where there is major concern on the right side, just zero concern on the left side right now
Starting point is 00:27:40 for me with Peter Skowronski and JC Latham. So excited to see what they can do and when you add Lloyd Cushenberry, one of the better centers in the NFL, right there in the middle, just such high hopes for this offensive line this year if the Titans can solidify the right-hand side and hopefully Dylan Radins and Nicholas Petit Ferrer take that job.
Starting point is 00:28:00 But that is going to do it for me today, folks. Again, I'm going to be back with you guys tomorrow talking about Will Levis and how excited I am for his breakout. Going to talk about Tajay Spears being RB1 and explain my thoughts there. Well, I think Calvin Ridley is wide receiver one, ready to talk
Starting point is 00:28:16 about that with you guys. And then also, we got to talk about Tavondre Sweat missing OTAs. We're going to talk about Jeffrey Simmons and Legereus Sneed not being there at OTAs. We're going to talk about Jeffrey Simmons and LeJarius Sneed not being there at OTAs. I'm going to discuss all the absences as I get you guys ready for OTAs to start back up this week on Wednesday as well. Don't miss any of that. But that is going to do it for me today, folks.
Starting point is 00:28:36 As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland. And this was Locked on Titans.
