Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Offense BOUNCES BACK, Backup QB Competition Update & JC Latham Mamba Mentality
Episode Date: June 6, 2024The Tennessee Titans wrapped up mandatory mini-camp on Thursday and after a rough day for the offense on Wednesday, the offense, led by Will Levis, bounced back in a major way. However, Levis is still... adjusting to the new offense and it will take time. Next, the backup quarterback competition is technically open, but it is hard to imagine Mason Rudolph losing out to Malik Willis, regardless of what Brian Callahan says. Finally, JC Latham continues to impress with his work ethic and it is no shock Kobe Bryant had a major impact on him. Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=asc Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videos Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BetterHelpThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. The Tennessee Titans offense struggled on Wednesday, but Will Levis led a major bounce-back day on Thursday.
I'll tell you what happened on today's edition of the Locked On Titans podcast.
You are Locked On Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network.
Your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked On Titans podcast.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland, Titans fans.
We got a lot to talk about on today's show.
The final day of mandatory minicamp for the Tennessee Titans.
And while it was a struggle on offense on Wednesday,
mini camp for the Tennessee Titans.
And while it was a struggle on offense on Wednesday,
we saw Will Levis lead a major bounce back effort for the Tennessee Titans at Thursday's practice.
I'm going to break it all down.
Plus, we got an update on the backup quarterback battle
between Malik Willis and Mason Rudolph.
So I'll give you an update there.
And also, J.C. Latham just continues to show that he is the man for the job
for the Tennessee Titans.
So I'll dive into some of the stuff that J.C. Latham had to say
about his progress so far.
Before we get into all of that, I do want to thank you
for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen each and every day.
Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round,
always for free.
You're not going to beat that anywhere else.
Make sure you get subscribed, stay subscribed.
It's your team every day here on the Locked on Titans podcast,
part of the Locked on Podcast Network.
Speaking of every day, shout out to my everydayers out there
tuning in Monday through Friday.
It's been a great week of podcasts.
Hope you guys have enjoyed.
But next week, the Tennessee Titans are going to be back out on the field for their final OTA week of the summer. Can't wait to dive into that with you
guys. Make sure that you don't miss it. Again, get subscribed, stay subscribed. It's your team
every day. But with that being said, a bounce back day for the offense. Now, yesterday, we talked
about the struggles that the offense had. Will Levis
threw a pick, a couple of late throws, the defense was swarming, Denard Wilson really
opened up the bag with the pressures in the red zone period, all of that made it difficult,
and Brian Callahan talked about, hey, the reason I got Denard Wilson is because he makes
it difficult on me as a play caller, so glad to see that that is happening for the Titans as well.
And iron sharpens iron, of course.
So the better that the defense is,
the better it'll make the Titans offense, all of that.
But on Thursday, we got a bounce back performance from the offense.
They played much better in the periods that they had available to them.
And according to Teron Davenport from ESPN,
Will Levis had a nice back shoulder throw to Josh Wiley.
More of a better catch for Wiley than a great throw,
but a big gain on a back shoulder to Josh Wiley.
That connection between Will Levis and Josh Wiley.
I read you guys a quote of what Will Levis had to say about Josh Wiley earlier this week.
My everydayers will remember their connection.
Will Levis said that they've been hip to hip since the moment they came into the building as rookies. And I will
continue to say, I think based on body type and play style, that Josh Wiley has a great chance
to be the Titans tight end one this year. Now I think there will be a rotation with Chigaconko,
Nick Vanette, the veteran. There's going to be a rotation there, but either way, Josh Wiley and
the connection with Will Levis
just continues to show up, continues to show out.
And I think that if Wiley can keep himself healthy here,
great opportunity to be the Titans' number one tight end this year
and maybe going forward.
Levis also hit NWI on a diving catch, according to TD.
Chigga Konkwo up the seam had a catch.
And it kind of reminds me of the, I forget the exact game,
whether it was the Atlanta game, whether it was the Houston game.
It might have been that first Atlanta game where Levis hit Aconquo.
It was a little behind Chig Aconquo, but he should have caught it.
He tried to run without it.
I think it was right before halftime in that Falcons game, actually.
But sounds like it was kind of a similar play.
Levis was a little behind, a little late, but it hit Chig.
Chig made the catch, turned up the old big play.
Also, more importantly, we talk about the first-team offense.
We talk about Will Levis.
We talk about these plays that he's making.
But according to Brandon Gall from 440 Sports, or Brandon Gall,
whatever how you want to say it,
there were wide-open guys on offense on all three units.
Like, the entire time.
Like, this offense is getting guys wide open.
And I think while people are adjusting,
and we talked about Will Levis' struggles,
and the reality is, of course, according to Braden Gall as well,
Will Levis was still late on a lot of throws this week.
A lot of throws.
He was late, and that makes the accuracy off of where he wants to be.
And it was far from perfect, basically, throughout this entire week.
But, and we'll talk about what Coach Callie had to say
about that situation here in just a moment.
But I think what's more important right now,
because we talked yesterday about how it's going to take guys some time to gel.
It's a brand new system, brand new coaching staff, brand new coaches,
brand new players all up and down the roster.
We're in mandatory minicamp in the early part of June.
It's going to take some time for guys to see these plays.
And I think a lot of it is, and Will Levis has talked about this too,
that you've got to rep these plays.
This is the first, second, third time Will Levis has run any of these plays
and seen any of these plays.
So obviously it's going to take some time for him to get comfortable
with the timing, with the rhythm, who's open against this coverage,
who's open against this, where do I need to be at this time.
All of that is going to take time to adjust.
But the more important takeaway here is that Brian Callahan's offense
is getting people wide open.
And that's something that we didn't necessarily see a lot
over the last few years.
And here's Brian Callahan talking about Will Levis
and him being a little late on some throws and things like that,
how this is part of the process.
So Callahan says this, quote,
he's doing a good job.
There are some timing things like yesterday, for example,
in the red zone might've been like the first or second time he's repped a particular play.
So it was all very new. And he's probably late on two or three throws down there on some new
concepts he hadn't banked reps on. So the hope is, is that you pointed out the first time and you
say, this is the timing he needs to be at.
He sees when the window is open and you keep working on that. You keep pushing that timing.
Everything about how you play football in the NFL at quarterback spot in the drop back game is very heavily timing based. Feet have to be right. Processing of what you see has to be fast. And
you got to trust what you see when you make throws.
The old adage, a lot of quarterbacks try to wait to see guys come open.
You're trying to anticipate when they're going to be open.
That's a maturation process for a quarterback.
The fun part is he sees it and understands it.
When it's not exactly right,
and he usually makes an adjustment the next time out.
You take a red zone play the first day
he runs it. Maybe it's not great. The timing is not what you want it to be. Then we've repped it
four or five, six times before the season starts. And now you start to feel that timing starts to
feel it and see it. It's a rep thing. It's an experience process. So I think even though Levis
was still a little bit late on
throws, yesterday those throws were
pass breakups. Yesterday those throws were
overthrows. Yesterday those throws
were interceptions or one interception
in particular. Today,
still a little bit late, still a little behind,
but now they're turning into completions
and guys are open and it may not
be perfect, but they're turning into completions.
If you turn that dial just a little bit more as we get to training camp and more reps and more
film and more experience, now we're getting to, oh, that was a perfectly placed ball. Oh, that's
exactly where you go on the right timing. So we're already seeing it's from one day to the next.
We're already seeing things tick a little bit towards more positive for Will Levis in the offense.
So love hearing that.
Love hearing the improvement.
Love hearing the steps forward here.
And, of course, after hearing that the offense struggled so bad
last practice and yesterday,
great to hear that the offense had a bounce-back day,
strike back a little bit against the defense,
and get some momentum as we head into the last week of OTAs.
You're not going to go from bad to perfect overnight.
There are steps on the way there, and this is one of those steps.
So love hearing the improvement from the offense, but we're not just going to talk about QB1.
We're going to talk about QB2, the backup quarterback battle, which Brian Callahan gave
us an update on on Thursday. I'm going to talk about QB2, the backup quarterback battle, which Brian Callahan gave us an update on on Thursday.
I'm going to dive into that now.

Titans fans, let's continue today's breakdown of the last practice of mandatory minicamp
for the Tennessee Titans.
We've talked about the offense having a bounce back day.
Now I want to keep talking about that quarterback position,
but move past Will Levis
and talk about this backup quarterback competition
going on between Mason Rudolph and Malik Willis. Before I get into it, I do want to thank you again
for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen each and every day. Remember,
Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free.
Next week, the last week of summer offseason workouts, the Titans are going to practice
Monday through Thursday. A couple of the Titans are going to practice Monday through
Thursday.
A couple of those days are going to be open to the media, so we're going to have a lot
to discuss.
There's stuff that we need to discuss from this week that I haven't even had time to
get into.
So, so much Tennessee Titans content coming your way.
Can't wait to dive into all of it with you guys.
Again, make sure you get subscribed.
Stay subscribed.
It's your team every day here on the Locked on Titans podcast.
But we haven't talked a lot about the backup quarterback competition
so far this offseason.
And quite honestly, there's not a lot of intrigue there for me at this time.
I think that it's pretty clear that Mason Rudolph is the backup quarterback
and that Malik Willis is going to have an uphill battle to make this roster.
I think with where the Titans roster is at,
the depth that they're going to want to have on the offensive line,
the depth that they're going to want to have on the defensive line
and in the secondary, wide receiver is another place
where the Titans could keep a bunch of guys running back.
They could keep four guys.
I just think that it's going to be tough for the Titans
to keep three quarterbacks on the roster. And I think that whereas in previous years, Malik Willis would, maybe he
would get picked up by somebody else if the Titans tried to slip him on the practice squad. I think
they could get Malik on the practice squad, but does he fit? Does he earn it? Those are all
questions that I have. And I think that if I'm honest, after we saw Malik Willis play his rookie
year and after the Titans decided to roll with Josh Dobbs over him at the end of the season, I think that if I'm honest, after we saw Malik Willis play his rookie year
and after the Titans decided to roll with Josh Dobbs over him
at the end of the season, from that moment, I've been out on Malik Willis.
I don't think that Malik Willis is an NFL player.
Titans kept him around.
Last year, I kept saying that I think Will Levis is going to be quarterback too.
Will Levis is the true backup to Ryan Tannehill.
And a lot of people tried to dunk on me
because those first six weeks of the year,
he wasn't.
Malik Willis was QB too.
But then, when the money was on the line
and the chips were on the table
against Atlanta with Ryan Tannehill out,
Mike Brable put Will Levis in.
And I think that, you know,
that tells us all that we need to know.
So, I don't think that Malik Willis is going to really truly compete
for backup quarterback.
And you hear the rumblings out of camp that Malik Willis has not played well.
Malik Willis has clearly been the worst quarterback out of the three.
Mason Rudolph has had some days where he's looked better than Will Levis
from what you hear.
So, you know, I just don't think that there's any way
that Malik Willis is beating out Mason Rudolph for QB2.
And I know the same people that were mad at me last year
for not believing in Malik Willis are going to be the same people
that are mad at me this year for not believing in Malik Willis.
All I can tell you is at least I'm consistent.
And I consistently don't believe in Malik Willis after Mike Vrabel decided he was not going to believe in Malik Willis. All I can tell you is at least I'm consistent. And I consistently don't believe in Malik Willis
after Mike Vrabel decided
he was not going to believe
in Malik Willis.
And you can think of
whatever insane reason
that you want to
for my motivations
for not believing in Malik Willis.
But all I'll tell you is
it's the tape.
The film.
Watching him play football.
Watching him be late.
He's just not an NFL player.
I don't know what else to tell you. But we did get an
update from Brian Callahan on that battle and of
course, of course Brian Callahan kept Malik Willis in the
competition. Callahan says, quote, it's a competition.
They're both going to get a fair shake at the QB2 job. We've been up
front with both those guys telling them how this is going to work.
They will split reps pretty evenly.
They'll get a chance to play quite a bit in the preseason.
That is usually where it separates in game action.
When you really get the evaluation.
Happy with where both those guys are at.
Just like any competition, there's going to be ups and downs.
There will be days where guys come out
and one looks better than the other.
The evaluation is a totality
of their time in the offseason,
training camp, and the preseason games.
It's an ongoing evaluation
and there's going to be ebbs and flows.
Guys will look good one day and not as good
the other, so you're trying to get their
totality of work for who is best
equipped to be the number
two. Alright, to me,
my
interpretation of that is, he even
says in there, there will be days
where you guys come out
and one looks better than the other. He's talking to
the media, saying, hey, there are going to be days
where the media is out here, you're watching
and one guy looks a lot better
than the other guy. Well, the reason he's saying that is watching, and one guy looks a lot better than the other guy.
Well, the reason he's saying that is because Mason Rudolph has looked a lot better than Malik Willis.
And what Callahan's trying to do is,
hey, just because the days that you guys have been out here,
Mason Rudolph has looked a lot better than Malik Willis,
doesn't mean that he looks better every day.
You know, he's just trying to keep Malik Willis' confidence together,
keep being honest, and keep it an open competition,
not trying to play his hand too early,
keep his powder dry.
You could say, you know what I mean?
He's just not trying to act like it's over right now.
But I'm sorry.
I think if we put Brian Callahan on truth serum right now
and told him to tell us who's really the
backup quarterback. He would say over
and over, it's Mason Rudolph.
Mason Rudolph is the better football player.
I mean, Mason Rudolph,
some people don't like Mason Rudolph
and I think a lot of it has to do with the
with the Miles Garrett incident and
Mason Rudolph,
you look into his history, he may not be the best guy, whatever.
You know, not time to have that conversation.
But I think some people just don't like Mason Rudolph
because they don't like Mason Rudolph.
But the reality is, he's got a winning record as a quarterback.
He has been a solid, reliable backup.
I think he's probably one of the top 10 backups in the NFL.
So you're not, Malik Willis is not even one of the top 60
backup quarterbacks in the NFL.
So we can play this game and we can let there be competition
and the Titans need arms for camp.
You can't have Will Levis throwing everything all the time
and your backup quarterback throwing everything all the time.
So you need three or four quarterbacks in training camp.
So might as well let Malik Willis get those reps,
let him get the experience.
Maybe he moves on, he goes somewhere else.
Maybe he hits the practice squad.
And I like having Malik Willis on the practice squad
because of his mobility.
He can simulate a lot of the mobile quarterbacks
that you're going to see throughout the NFL.
I mean, is he as good as those mobile quarterbacks?
No, obviously not.
But what scout team quarterback is going to be as good
as starting quarterbacks in the NFL?
That's not how this works.
So I like the idea of keeping Malik Willis around
as a practice squad guy and a scout team quarterback.
I think that would be a great move for the Titans.
But come on now.
There's just no way that Malik Willis is beating out Mason Rudolph
for the backup quarterback spot.
Just don't believe it. Let me know down beating out Mason Rudolph for the backup quarterback spot. Just don't believe it.
Let me know down below who you think wins the backup quarterback spot.
But with that being said, I just got to give more love to J.C. Latham.
As a guy who was on the fence about that pick,
by the time that the pick happened, I liked it.
There were other ways that I would consider going,
but the more and more you hear from JC Latham,
the more excited you have to get as a Tennessee Titans fan.
But before we get into that, I do want to remind you guys

But with that being said, we are going to cap off today's edition of the Locked On Titans Podcast.
I know you guys can't see me when the videos are playing,
but I'm always back here jamming to the beat, man.
Absolutely love it.
Who's got better music than the Locked on Titans podcast?
The new music, the old music, always fire.
Anyways, moving right along.
You can tell that it's the end of the week, all right?
I'm fired up from the Titans football, the weekend approaches, all that.
Anyways, we've talked about the offense bouncing back.
Important, taking those steps, incremental steps, all right?
We talked about the backup quarterback competition
and how, you know, Callahan can say what he wants,
but I think we all know how it's going to end.
But I got to give more praise to J.C. Latham
before we head into our weekend here, folks.
Because, again, like I was just saying,
initially, early in the draft process, February,
I was not in on J.C. Latham.
The risk, didn't
do the testing, the weight,
playing right tackle.
Is he the answer? Alabama
offensive linemen have a rough history
in the NFL, so I was a little
worried. No lie. I didn't think Latham would
be a good option for the Titans.
Then I dove into his film.
And once I watched his film,
I mean,
it was hard to ignore the raw talent.
And it was hard to ignore the way he
absolutely manhandled guys
every week.
Like, it wasn't like,
oh, here's a special rep.
It's every rep, he's just stonewalling guys
with his massive hands and his core strength.
Like, I was off.
I was off on my analysis.
And it took me some time,
and I had to dive deep into the tape,
and I came out very impressed.
All right?
Now, I also admit, though,
even to draft weekend,
JC Latham at seven with no trade down,
there were other things that I like.
I would have preferred Joe Alt.
I would have preferred Malik Neighbors.
I probably would have went with Roma Dunze at the time.
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba.
And it looks like I was wrong.
And for all the people out there that always say I never admit when I'm wrong,
I actually admit that I'm wrong more than just about any other Titans media member. Like, nobody likes to do that. I do it all the people out there that always say I never admit when I'm wrong. I actually admit that I'm wrong more than just about any other Titans media member. Like nobody likes to do that. I do it all
the time because whatever you get stuff wrong in life, whether you talk about football or you talk
about whatever, or you make decisions, you get stuff wrong. Not admitting when you're wrong is
really where you start to mess up in life because you have to evaluate things. It looks like I was wrong in my analysis of J.C. Latham
and my hesitation.
I said on draft night I liked the pick
because of the way the board fell.
You couldn't get neighbors.
It was him or Odunze.
I liked the pick.
But I admit, I'm smitten with J.C. Latham at this time.
He said, you know, the blocking sleds are my best friend now.
From day one to now, dominating them.
Alright?
Just his, his personality is not what I expected.
Like, he is a very vibrant, very jovial guy.
He walks that line of,
hey, I'm out here having fun,
and my personality and being around me makes other people have fun, but I'm not unserious.
I'm not a class clown type guy.
He's not a class clown by any means.
You could tell.
There's a big difference between his positive attitude
and then what I would consider like class clown behavior.
You know what I mean?
He's not like going out of his way to make these jokey jokes.
He's just in a good mood, being a positive person.
And his work ethic.
Listen, anybody who's been listening to this show
for any kind of length of time knows,
Kobe Bryant is my hero.
Kobe Bryant is my muse.
Everything that I do, I basically learned it from Kobe.
He was my parental figure a lot of my life growing up.
I looked up to Kobe Bryant.
That's how I should do things, okay?
And anytime one of these players mentions Kobe,
well, now you're just pulling at my heartstrings.
And that is exactly what J.C. Latham did after practice on Thursday.
So let me read this quote to you guys from J.C. Latham.
Quote, and he's talking about his work ethic, alright? Because he's
been working after practice every
day and we've told the stories about how
they gotta come out and get him off the practice
field at 430 in the rain and
blah blah blah blah blah and he says this,
I think I was in 10th grade, 11th grade
when they moved me from defensive line to
offensive line. I was one of the top
10 defensive players in the country
and we just lost three
linemen to crazy incidents. So they moved me to play tackle when we were D linemen. And I mean,
I like to compete and I like to win, but obviously I am playing a whole different position I had
never played before at IMG at a high level. I'm talking to the coach and I'm just working every single day after practice.
Conveniently, I watched a video on Kobe Bryant
and he expressed that when he arrived in basketball a little later,
or that he arrived in basketball a little later,
but he worked out twice a day in a year span,
he would get better like two years worth of work in a one-year span.
So in five years, and being in the NBA,
he had 10 years of work.
So I took that to heart, and I did my own work on my own outside of practice.
I will get better twice as fast. So since high school, that's something I
kind of adopted. This is the, to think that
some people compared him to Isaiah Wilson.
How ridiculous and lazy, man. Insane. Absolutely insane. This is
like, when you take legendary talent and you combine it
with legendary coaching and you combine it with legendary coaching
and you combine it with legendary work ethic,
folks, that is a recipe for greatness right there.
So, obviously, he's going to be a rookie left tackle.
There are going to be ups and downs in the season.
But I just, my faith in J.C. Latham
from when he was drafted to now exponentially higher.
Like he is just, the proof is in the pudding, folks.
And he's out there making it work.
And that's what really matters.
I'm just totally impressed with what I've seen from him as a worker and personality.
When he talks to the media, the way he speaks, the stories he tells, like, he just gets it.
And there was a funny moment today in the press conference
where J.C. Latham actually busted in to Brian Callahan's press conference
and said, Coach, what do you think about running a tackle screen?
And it was funny.
He said he was just kidding, obviously, but just love every—
and here's another thing to mention.
The Titans are an undercover team, all right?
And while Taylor LeJuan kind of went overboard, in my opinion,
on the personality stuff,
having a guy with a great personality that's magnetic
is very good for Titans fans, all right?
And I think JC Latham can be a superstar in terms of his personality
and I think that's important too
to the fan experience in my opinion
but also want to tell you what J.C. Latham had to say
about kind of where he's at right now
transitioning from right tackle to left tackle
and he said quote
I think one thing a lot of colleges
and especially high schools as well
don't really understand is how to practice without pads.
That is something I had to learn how to do.
Being in college,
you're really just working on your first two steps.
But here, you see a lot of guys working hands.
Refits.
Which he means refitting your hands
after you engage with the defenders.
Kind of a secondary hand moment.
Especially one time yesterday.
I got beat.
I overset, which means he got too far up the field, and he took the angle inside.
In college or high school, guys aren't really doing all that.
But in the league, you have bad technique.
They're not going to do too much,
but they are going to take what they see and go inside on you.
That's definitely something that you got to know how to make that adjustment.
But making the transition from right to left, you are learning everything from a different
style and technique from a legendary coach.
So, I mean, he's telling you, yeah, there are, you know, things I got to work on, adjustments
I got to make.
But we heard the work ethic.
We heard the comfortability.
He knows he's adjusting. Again, any great athlete
ever or any person who has had major success in anything in life, me, I will tell you this.
I failed so many times. I dropped out of college. I couldn't get a few writing gigs that I wanted
in my mid-20s because I didn't have the experience
and I didn't finish school.
Like, I have failed so many times
on so many things.
Failure prepares you for success.
Michael Jordan, if you don't believe me,
look at Michael Jordan, all his quotes will tell you.
The reason I was able to win is because I lost.
So, like Will Levis,
like JC Latham,
you know, there are going to be
bad plays.
There are going to be mistakes.
There are going to be things that you have to adjust from.
And those teach you how to be the best version of yourself.
So, whether it's football,
whether it's life,
having the right attitude,
recognizing your mistakes.
This is like what I talked about earlier
in admitting that you're wrong.
If people won't admit when they're wrong, or
they got it wrong, or they messed up,
you're never going to grow. You're never going to get
better. So failure is not
something that we should all scoff at and worry
at. You should fail
right now so that you succeed
during the season. That's the whole point
of summer practice. But with
that being said, that is going to do it for me
today, folks. Again, I'll be back with you guys
next week to cover the last week
of Tennessee Titans OTAs. But as
always, I am your host, Tyler
Rowland, and this
was Locked on Titans.
