That should be expected though and is the case around ...the league. Next, the defense had a good day and two standouts were Jamal Adams and rookie Jaylen Harrell. Finally, two Titans have been under the microscope in T'Vondre Sweat and Treylon Burks made different impressions on Day 1.Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitansTicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=ascFollow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitansFollow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPodSubscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videosSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!LinkedInLinkedIn Jobs helps you find the qualified candidates you want to talk to, faster. The Tennessee Titans offense looked out of sync on day one of training camp practice,
but that's to be expected.
I'll explain why on today's edition of the Locked On Titans podcast.

Finally, our first training camp practice for the Tennessee Titans is in the books.
I'm going to tell you how the offense struggled on day one,
some standouts on the defensive side of the ball,
and we're going to talk about first impressions for Tavondre Sweat and Traylon Burks.
Before I get into all of that, I do want to thank you guys for making the Locked on Titans podcast
your first listen each and every day.
Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free.

It's your team every day here on the Locked on Titans podcast.
Speaking of every day, shout out to my everydayers out there.
Tuning in Monday through Friday.
Couldn't do it without you guys.
If you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one.
Titans have practice again on Thursday.
I'm going to break that down.
There's an open practice to the public on Saturday.
I'm going to have a recap of that on Sunday.
And I'm going to be breaking down practice
all training camp long right here on the number one Tennessee Titans podcast in the world.
Again, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, 25 years a Tennessee Titans fanatic.
I'm a certified film junkie breaking down the X's and O's.
I've covered the team for Sports Illustrated, USA Today, and I've been hosting this great podcast for five years running. But with all that out of the way, we got to talk
about this practice for the Titans because the Titans offense reportedly came out sloppy. They
were sluggish. They were out of sync, according to Sam Phelan from A to Z Sports. A lot of sacks,
tackles for loss. There were defenders, quote-unquote, slicing through the line untouched.
The battle between J.C. Latham and Arden Key was up and down.
It sounded like the offensive line really, really struggled,
and obviously there were other ways that the offense struggled.
There was a near interception on Will Levis by Roger McCreary
on a play against Calvin Ridley, according to Teron Davenport.
Tony Pollard fumbled a pitch.
He recovered it, but still.
Overall, the main takeaways that I saw from all the reports of training camp
were that the offense was just out of sync.
They were out of sorts.
It wasn't the best day.
Now, worth mentioning here that Will Levis did have some good plays.
All right, Will Levis had an impressive throw to NWI
that everybody was talking about.
An out route to NWI.
Had to put a little bit of touch on it.
Had to put a little loft on it.
It was a perfect pass on the sideline.
So you love to hear that.
Will Levis had a slant to Traylon Burks
that was completed as well.
Also hit one over the middle
and seven on sevens to Chigga Conquo
according to Teron Davenport.
So basically the main takeaway was
there were flashes from Will Levis.
Will Levis had some impressive moments.
But overall as an operation,
the offense wasn't quite up to snuff.
Now let me tell you why that is exactly, exactly
what we want to hear about the offense right now.
Number one, we knew that the right side of the offensive line was going to be bad.
NPF is still not out on the practice field,
and whether NPF was out there or not,
as a Titans fan, you have to look at yourself in the mirror and accept the fact
that the right side of the offensive line is not going to be quality players.
The Titans are going to have to ham and egg it on that side. They're going to have to send help
with a tight end. They're going to have to hope to get better play than what the players
available have shown so far in their career. They need Sadiq Charles to be
better than he's been in Washington.
They need Nicholas Petit-Ferrer to be better than he's been so far.
John Ajuku continued getting some love on Monday,
but at the end of the day, he's an undrafted free agent
who hasn't really been a consistent roster player for the last few seasons.
So why would I expect this guy,
who could barely keep himself on the roster the last two years,
to then make this big jump
to a certified good starter in the NFL.
So I think we should expect that there are going to be some issues with the offensive
line, particularly early on.
And then outside of the offensive line, look around the NFL.
If you pay attention, so I cover the NFL at large for Locked On as well doing the Locked On NFL podcast on Thursdays.
The Houston Texans. Everybody's in love with their offense, right?
They got it all. There's no team hotter than the Texans. Their tickets are sold
to the Texans. Well, all the reports out of Houston on day one
were that the offense did not look good. That the offense was disjointed.
The defense looked better.
You look over at the other division, mate,
you look at the Jacksonville Jaguars,
interception, incomplete pass,
stopped at the goal line,
stopped at the goal line.
All around the NFL, the general consensus,
if you've ever played football,
and even if you haven't played football,
maybe you've just heard this,
but the general consensus is that defense
is always going
to be ahead of offense. Offense is more intricate. Offense is, I guess, more individual playbook to
playbook from different teams. Look, hey, we're running a cover three. Hey, we're running a cover
four. Hey, we're running cover two. Hey, we're going to play man cover one. Like defense is just more repeatable from team to
team, from league to league, from situation to situation. So it's more likely that the defensive
players are going in the defense in general is going to be ahead of the offense. But despite
the offense being out of sync on day one, we still got word that Will Levis had flashes.
And that is exactly what you want to hear.
The offense struggled.
That should be expected.
It may take some time.
It's a new offense, new pieces, and offense is always behind.
But still, Will Levis showed flashes of brilliance.
And Will Levis threw a couple of balls that were like,
whoa, that is a good throw.
There we go.
So to me, that is what you wanted to hear.
I knew that the offense, I've talked about this.
I talked about this during OTAs.
We knew that the offense would struggle a little bit
to get everything together,
but you want to see Will Levis have those moments
where it's like, oh, okay.
And that is exactly what we got on day one and that is exactly what we got on day one.
Okay, exactly what we got on day one.
And at the end of the day, it's day one.
So if you're panicking about the offense not being amazing
on day one of training camp, well, just step down from that ledge, my friend.
All right, that's all I have to say.
It's going to be all right.
Let's move forward a little bit, okay, and see. So, um, not the best day for the offense. That's
to be expected, but still some really nice plays from Will Levis, which is what you want to hear.
All right. But if we're going to talk about the offense being sluggish and being out of sync,
well, that means that the defense was playing some football. So I'm going to tell you guys about the defensive performance
and two players were standouts on Wednesday.
One you'd expect, Jamal Adams, and one you might not, Jalen Harrell,
the rookie out of Michigan.
I'm going to talk about that and give my first impressions on Traylon Burks
and Tavondre Sweat, my favorite player.
We'll get into that now.
Before we do, though, I do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by GameTime.

breaking down the first training camp practice of 2024.
Guys, we made it.
Football is here.
The Titans are going to practice tomorrow.
I'm going to be breaking that all down tomorrow for you guys.
They're going to practice on Saturday in front of the public.
We're going to know starting offensive line for the moment.
We're going to know defensive alignment because it's going to be open to the public.
Maybe the Titans will try to hide that stuff with how they handle the practice
and the structure of the practice, but I can't wait for all of that.
So make sure that you get subscribed, stay subscribed.
Nobody is breaking down this team Monday through Friday
all year long like I do, period.
And then you add that with the film breakdowns
that I'm putting out on the Tic Tac Titans channel
and the film conversations we have on here.
I mean, you can't beat the content.
You just simply can't.
So again, thank you for making Locked on Titans
your first listen each and every day.
But if we talk about the offense being out of sync,
we got to talk about the performance of the defense,
which overall looked pretty solid.
The Titans' defense was aggressive throughout the day.
The Titans were putting pressure on the offense, of course,
but two players, in my opinion, from all the reports and everything we saw,
two players really stood out on Monday.
Number one, Jamal Adams.
Okay, look.
I was not high on the Jamal Adams signing.
Alright, it was fine that it was, you know, not that expensive
or, you know, whatever you want to call it.
It was a cheap deal.
The deal itself was fine.
It's Adams as a player that I'm worried about because
quite frankly, he's been washed for the last few years. That's just the reality of the situation.
All indications are that he looked explosive and he was making plays. I believe it was Sam
Phelan again from A to Z Sports said that Jamal Adams impressed him throughout the day. He had
a sack on Will Levis on a blitz from the linebacker position. He had some good coverage from the nickel position
in team periods as well. So if you listen to Coach Dave McGinnis, Coach Mack, who is employed
by the Tennessee Titans, he has said throughout the summer that Denard Wilson is going to have
multiple packages on defense. That means different personnel, different formations, different schemes for different
players. He's really going to try to match up with the offense in that given week, in that
given situation. Having a player like Jamal Adams does really help you do that because in passing
situations, he can be that dime linebacker. He can be that sub package linebacker.
He can blitz up the middle. He's physical enough to do that, but he also is going to cover. He's
not a great coverage guy, but he's probably going to cover better than most of the linebackers that
the Titans have. Gibbons isn't a coverage guy. Murray isn't a coverage guy. I think Cedric Craig
could be a pretty good coverage guy, but at the end of the day, he is a rookie. So Jamal Adams
is going to be able to cover better than most of the
linebackers on the Titans, if not all of them. So he could be that sub package linebacker, but also
seeing him used as an early down nickelback, that nickelback, but I think that would be
incredibly interesting as well. He definitely has the ability to do that. Now you can't have
Jamal Adams playing nickel on passing downs because then he'd have to play man coverage or press coverage on a slot wide receiver.
That's not what you want him doing. But on first down, to me, I go back to
I don't think the scheme is going to be exactly the same, but the mentality or the
philosophy could still be the same.
In Elijah Molden's
first year, his rookie year, where he impressed us all as a physical early down nickelback,
he would play in the slot on early downs because he's a good blitzer,
because he's good in run defense,
because he was a physical, instinctive player who could come downhill.
And that's great when you're dealing with early down RPOs,
you're dealing with run game out of shotgun,
all of those different things.
It really allows you to be better against the run and more physical when you have a player like that. The problem with Elijah Molden was
he couldn't cover a traffic cone, you know, like, so what the Titans would do is they would play
Molden on early downs or obvious run situations or more likely run situations, I guess is the
right way to say it. And then they would take him off the field on passing downs and they would put
on Buster screen who Buster screen off off the reservation if you followed what's happened
with him since the end of his career. But for that year, Buster Screen did a really good job
in coverage in the nickel, in the slot. So if the Titans take a similar approach,
they do an early down rotation of Roger McCreary and Jamal Adams at the nickel spot so they can keep Roger McCreary healthy and fresh. And also just Jamal Adams may be better suited for more physical
teams. You know what I mean? Roger McCreary is smaller than Jamal Adams. If the Titans play a
team like the Baltimore Ravens, for example, who are a heavy run team, we'll use multiple tight
ends, all of that. If you go up against a team like that, you might want to play Jamal Adams. But if you go up against a team like the Colts, who
really love to spread it wide, do a lot of RPO stuff, you may want to have Roger McCreary out
there because he's a little bit better in coverage, a little bit of a quicker player, all that.
So Denard Wilson has the ability to really move the chess pieces around with Jamal
Adams in that way. And if he is fully healthy and he stays healthy and he is used in the proper way,
then I'm going to have to take my L and it's going to turn into a very good minimum signing
for the Titans. And Jamal Adams attitude, his attitude in his press conference after practice,
I was impressed with.
I was.
I have some beefs with Jamal Adams from things that he's done in the past in public
where I don't know that he's necessarily the best dude.
And he even admitted in his press conference
that Seattle wanted him to move to linebacker.
And he said, no, I'm not doing that.
So when your coaches are like,
hey man,
you're going to be a much better linebacker at this stage in your career.
We need to move you there.
And you're like, no, I'm not doing it.
Well, you know.
Again, I'm not as high on the guy, Jamal Adams, as maybe others.
But in his press conference, he seemed to acknowledge that like
maybe he does need to change things going forward. And it's different when you have somebody
telling you that who maybe you don't trust or maybe you don't like. Denard Wilson,
Frank Bush, Steven Jackson, all guys who have worked with
Jamal Adams before who he was like, hey, these are
my guys. These are people who I really trust. He had talked about that in the press
conference. When it's those guys telling you,
hey, Jamal, we're going to have to use you in this way.
We're going to have to do this.
Now he's like, all right.
It would be the difference between like your family
and a stranger giving you criticism.
You know what I mean?
Somebody who actually knows you
and you know has your best interest at heart
versus somebody who you don't know for certain.
Maybe they do, maybe they don't, but you can't know.
So I thought that the Jamal Adams first impressions
were something that really stood out to me
that not enough people were talking about.
And then finally, we got to give love to the rookie, Jalen Harrell.
All right.
Jalen Harrell.
Rookie out of Michigan.
Seventh rounder.
Edge rusher.
Had a great day.
Again, according to Sam Phelan,
sacks, pressures,
had a forced fumble as well.
I believe it was on Nick Vanette,
punched out a fumble.
And here might be the biggest piece of news.
Jalen Harrell got first team reps.
First team reps.
So we're talking about who's edge four.
Well, Jalen Harrell clearly, clearly has the inside track on that
over Caleb Murphy, Thomas Rush,
and then the undrafted free agent, pass rusher who the Titans brought in
who I can never seem to remember.
And that's for good reason.
But anyways, anyways,
now that's going to eat me up that I can't think about the name that I'm looking for there.
But anyways, Jalen Harrell,
the Titans need an edge rusher to step up.
It's absolutely critical for them that that happens.
Oh, Khalid Duke, duh. Kansas State, Khalid Duke. Duh. Kansas State. Khalid Duke.
There we go. Finally. But anyway, I mean, there is a major
opportunity for Harrell to step up, and if he does, he's going to have a lot of
opportunity to get reps during the season because you need to have a good rotation, and
he's a guy at Michigan who showed the ability to drop back into coverage, and I think that's
going to be a requirement for the outside linebackers for
Denard Wilson.
Going to be a lot of SIM pressures,
a lot of fake blitzes,
things like that.
You're going to be dropping certain guys,
trying to confuse the offense.
I think a guy like Jalen Harrell absolutely has the skillset to do that.
Just needs to add some more weight,
work on,
you know,
multiple moves and combo moves in his pass rush rather than just an effort rusher or the speed to power
that he liked to use in college.
But Jalen Harrell will stand out.
Worth noting that Harold Landry and Daniel Brunskill
not out on the practice field,
but Rancor Thon was talking about how Harold Landry's
in the best shape of his career, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, all that.
So I don't think it's anything serious,
but hopefully we get an update on those guys soon.
Now, we got to talk about Tavondre Sweat and Traylon Burks
and how they looked in their first practice.
And my opinion on those guys while being mostly negative throughout the offseason
is quite different based on day one of training camp.
So I'll explain why.

Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast,
recapping day one of Tennessee Titans training camp practices.
They finally hit the practice field.
We talked about Will Levis and the offense being a little bit out of sync,
but there's still flashes there.
Talked about two guys stepping up on defense in Jamal Adams and Jalen Harrell.
Now I want to get into my first impressions of Tavondre Sweat
and Traylon Burks.
Now, before I do that, I do want to thank you guys again
for making the Locked on Titans podcast
your first listen each
and every day. Remember, Monday through Friday,

But let's start with my favorite player, Tavondre Sweat.
All right, once again, took some heat from people.
Don't really care.
Gonna say my honest opinion and tell it how it is.
I thought Tavondre Sweat looked sluggish. He looked
a little out of shape.
I tweeted out,
retweeted out some videos
from practice where
he's
quite honestly loafing it.
He's not going through the drills full
speed. He's getting blown off the line
of scrimmage by other guys standing next
to him. There's a specific drill
where you're down in a stance and then
you explode out of the stance and you
finish strong and get up field.
Well, Sweat
didn't get out of his stance quickly.
Took one or two steps
and then totally stopped. Even people
who hate me were
admitting that the reps were bad.
They were like, oh yeah, the reps bad, but you're a hater.
All right, hey, if that's what you want to say, that's what you want to say.
But the reps were bad.
He looked sluggish.
He looked out of shape.
He did not look slimmer.
I saw some Titans fans saying, oh, he looks slimmer.
What?
What?
What are we doing here?
So look, guys, let me say this.
And I've said it before,
nobody seems to care when I give the caveats,
but one day of training camp practice
does not confirm my dislike of the pick of Tavondre Sweat.
It does not mean that he's anything, it does not mean he's a bust,
that's obviously absurd.
But, it continues
a pattern of him not being very
impressive. Missing all of OTAs.
Then we hear the assistant general manager
saying, yeah, I had to keep in contact with him all year. Make sure his
mind was right when he came back.
And then he finally comes
to camp and he looks like the most out-of-shape defensive lineman.
Looks sluggish, is not giving good effort.
There's one clip where Tracy Rocker, the Titans defensive line coach,
they're doing a drill where they step over backs.
Alright, everybody's done that drill if they played football.
You chop your feet, go through the backs.
Alright, they're doing the back and forth S motion.
And all the defensive linemen go
through it, and then Sweat goes through it
and Tracy Rocker has to stop him.
He's too high, and that's something
that I've talked about. I talked
about this when we talked about him in college.
He's too high out of his stance, which is a
common problem for bigger, heavier
guys. They don't want to stay low. It's hard to keep that much weight low and keep your knees
bent. Alright? They want to stand straight up. He did that
a lot in his pass rush at Texas. He would just stand straight up and he would get moved.
So he stands
straight up out of his stance. His first couple of steps
really sluggish.
You can tell the effort isn't there.
And Tracy Rocker,
the defensive line coach,
stops the drill.
Goes up to him,
reminds him,
keep your center of gravity low.
Keep your hips down.
And then he goes through the drill
and it, you know,
it's better,
but it still looks sluggish.
And Rocker kind of like
claps his hands.
And you can just tell
from his body language,
he's like,
all right, you know, I guess that'll do for now.
But here's what really is interesting about day one with Sweat.
After practice,
he was asked why he missed OTAs
and Brian Callahan has said it was due to a minor injury.
All right, so the coach told us it was a minor injury.
So, Tavondre Sweat was asked why he missed OTAs,
and he goes, ask the head coach.
And I wasn't the only one who was like,
oh my God, are we doing this right now?
Are we already at odds with the coaching staff and the training
staff? Are we already in disagreement with how you're being handled? Are we already doing this?
Now, some people made a valid retort that, hey, maybe he's literally just saying I'm not allowed
to talk about it. Ask the head coach. But if you watch the video and you look at the way he said it,
it's kind of hard to not take it as he was not happy about the situation.
And that goes back to the theory that I have been talking about,
that he wasn't actually hurt. He was actually just incredibly out of shape. And the team was like,
hey, you can't practice until you're in better shape. And we're not going to let you practice
until you get in better shape. So you're going to be here. You're going to work on getting in better condition,
but you're not going to practice.
That was my theory as to why he was missing time.
And his response to that question,
the coach already told us he had a minor injury.
So the coach asked the coach,
we already did.
And he said you had a minor injury.
So are you disagreeing with that?
It just, again, people are like,
you don't have anything to say about sweat but negativity.
Give me something positive to talk about.
Be at practice.
Be in shape.
Give good effort during the drills.
You know, do something to give me something to be positive about.
That's all I ask for.
I'll do it.
I promise I'll do it.
If he dominates a preseason game
or he has an incredible training camp practice
and all the reports are how good he is,
I'm going to talk about that.
But right now, there is nothing positive
to talk about with Tavondre Sweat.
And let me also say this.
Everybody likes to yell at me
that I talk about Sweat too much.
You're obsessed.
You hate this kid.
Well, if you go look,
Devondre Sweat was mobbed by local media after practice.
When all the players were available for an interview,
everybody went straight to Devondre Sweat.
Why?
Because he's the biggest story on the team right now.
And if you don't recognize that,
and you think I'm talking about Sweat
just because I personally don't like him,
and not because he's the biggest story,
then I don't know what to tell you
because all these other media members,
they know what's going to get the clicks.
They know what Titans fans want to hear about.
They know what is important right now with this team,
and it's Tavondre Sweat.
So if you want to be mad at me for talking about Sweat,
then you better be mad at everybody else
who rushed to him to get his quotes
because he is the biggest story on the team right now,
whether you like it or not.
Now, finally, I'll finish with this.
Traylon Burks.
Look, I'm not buying into the Traylon Burks hype.
I'm not getting fooled by the Traylon Burks hype. I'm not getting fooled by the Traylon Burks hype.
I'm not jumping on the hype train again.
I refuse to do it again.
Fool me once, shame on me.
Fool me twice, shame on you.
Fool me three times, throw the peace sign, load the choppa, and let it rain on you.
Shout out to J. Cole.
But I have to admit, Traylon Burks looks like he's in great shape.
He does. He does.
I know we laughed yesterday about the best shape of his career,
but he does.
He does look much slimmer.
He does look smooth.
And according to Jim Wyatt, he did look smooth.
Catching passes, moving around.
So I'm not going to buy into the hype again.
I'm not going to be up here
acting like Traylon Burks is going to be a star this year.
But I will have to admit, I was worried about the conditioning.
I was worried about the body.
I was worried about being in shape.
And boy, he absolutely looks in shape.
And what's funny is when I said he looked out of shape,
everybody said that, oh, you can't tell whether he's in shape or not, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
But now that I'm going to say he does look in shape because it's obvious,
he looks like he's in better shape now.
I'm a human being who can look at other humans and tell.
Well, I hope, I know that everybody will be like,
yeah, you're right, he's in better shape now.
So now I can tell.
Okay, whatever.
But anyways, I think Burks does look good.
He does look in shape.
Hopefully, he takes a step forward.
Remember, I hope that Sweat and Burks ball out.
Like, I want them to do well. It's just
skepticism on my end. But hey,
I gotta give credit where it's due. Traylon Burks
did look slim. Did look smooth. Gotta
give him that. But with that being said, I'll be
back with you guys tomorrow to break down more
training camp action. As always,
I am your host, Tyler Rowland,
and this was Locked
on Titans.
