Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans PASS on Shedeur Sanders, NO LATE ROUND BACKUPS & Veteran Offensive Line Help Wanted

Episode Date: April 8, 2025

The Tennessee Titans have picked Cam Ward to be their franchise quarterback and that means they are passing on Shedeur Sanders, but that doesn't mean that Sanders is not a good player in his own right.... Also, some may think that getting another quarterback later in the draft could offer good backup potential, but none of the names are worth the shot and it is not what Ward needs in the quarterback room. Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=asc Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videos Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!ChewyChewy has everything you need to keep your pet happy and healthy. Starting point is 00:00:00 Passing on Chaudhur Sanders and selecting Cam Ward is the right move for the Tennessee Titans. At the top of the draft, I'll break it down on today's edition of Locked on Titans. You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to the Locked On Titans podcast. I am your host, Tyler Roland, Titans fans. Today's show is the quarterback episode of our 2025 Lock on Titans NFL draft preview. We're going to talk all quarterbacks in the draft that aren't Cam Ward.
Starting point is 00:00:47 I'm going to go over why Cam Ward is the better selection and better option for the Tennessee Titans. We'll talk about why they need to pass on any late round backup options. Also, the Tennessee Titans are having a visit with a veteran free agent offensive tackle. I'm going to tell you what that all means. Before I dive into today's show, breaking down the quarterbacks in the NFL draft. Do you want to remind you that I'm going to be putting out my full, it's basically an hour long video, breaking down cam ward as a prospect on the Tic Tac Titans film channel, that's going to be out on 8 P M Eastern time on Tuesday night.
Starting point is 00:01:23 I hope you guys will go check that out. I put a ton of effort into that video. Again, it's about an hour long going over everything that makes cam ward special. On Wednesday, I'm going to have a video of the things cam ward needs to improve on that are a bit concerning. And then on Thursday, I'm going to have a video about cam wards fit within the Tennessee Titans offensive scheme. So make sure that you guys check that out.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Also want to thank you for making the locked on Titans podcast, your first listen each and every day, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free. Make sure that you get subscribed. Stay subscribed. It's your team every day. Speaking of every day shout out to my every dayers out there. Of course we're in the middle and starting the NFL draft process.
Starting point is 00:02:05 I'm going to be going over every single position over 200, 180 to 200 prospects. Make sure you guys get subscribed. Stay subscribed to your team every day. But with all that being said, out of the way, big day here for some promotional stuff, we got to talk about the decision at the top of the draft because the Tennessee Titans were right to pass on cam war or to pass on Shider Sanders to draft Cam Ward. Now we talked about Cam Ward's entire profile as a player on yesterday's show and then the film video that I'm making matches up with that conversation.
Starting point is 00:02:37 But those are the things that you need if you're going to take a quarterback number one overall because the reality is Shider Sanders just doesn't have some of the characteristics that you would need if you were taking a quarterback number one overall because the reality is Chaudhier Sanders just doesn't have some of the characteristics that you would need if you were taking a quarterback number one overall. Now I think that Chaudhier Sanders is a first round player. I think he's going to go in the first round. I think he's going to be a starting quarterback at the NFL level. I just don't think that he is going to be as high of a level of player as I think Cam Ward is going to be. Look, Chadeur Sanders can be a surgical player. All right, he's got great accuracy, all levels of the field, good touch, good placement. He's good at anticipating things.
Starting point is 00:03:16 He had one of the worst offensive lines in the entire nation in front of him during his time at Colorado, and he was still able to kind of push them towards having some level of relevancy and do a little bit of winning here and there. He really kind of changed that Colorado program around. Now the reality here is he has average to below average arm talent in the NFL over 40 yards, his ball just doesn't care the same way that other quarterbacks with better arms does. Does that mean that he can't be successful at the NFL level?
Starting point is 00:03:50 No, it's just a reality of his evaluation, his arm talent. You could say it's like a Joe Burrow or a two or, uh, yeah, I think those are good examples for him at the NFL level. Okay. So you can win and be a good quarterback without high level velocity on your throws, but it just makes it tougher. You got to be elite with all of the accuracy and ball placement components. And you got to be elite with the anticipation and understanding
Starting point is 00:04:18 what defenses are doing. Can he be that good at those things? And again, you don't have a super strong arm. There's not enough anticipatory throws on tape to feel comfortable that he can continue doing that. The offense that he was in was terrible. It was a spread offense, simplified everything. It makes it really hard to evaluate Sugar Sanders and what he could be at the NFL level. And then of course, he holds the ball too long.
Starting point is 00:04:42 He drifts backwards in the pocket. So without high level athleticism, without high level arm talent, without tape that you can look at and say, oh, he's going to be able to take his best rates and do that consistently at the NFL level. It's just hard to make that player the number one pick. And now we're hearing that the Browns are going to pass on him. The Giants are going to pass on him and that he's going to go later in the first round and quite frankly, that makes more sense for his talent level. I think that he is a mid first round pick to a late first round pick.
Starting point is 00:05:16 That's where it would make sense for Chedur Sanders to go. And it sounds like the NFL is kind of with that. I think the saints at number nine, I think the, the 49ers, the dolphins, maybe thinking a little ahead here, the Steelers, man, I hope he goes to the Steelers. That makes a ton of sense. You will get a team like the Los Angeles Rams a little bit lower. And if he gets into the 20s, somehow now the giants or the Browns can trade up
Starting point is 00:05:41 from early in the second round to go get Shider Sanders. So it's the right move for the Tennessee Titans to pass on Shider Sanders, but I still think he can be a solid player in the NFL going a little bit later in the first round. I think would be good for Sanders going forward in his career. Now there were other options that I think could go pretty high in the draft. I mean, Jackson Dar out of Ole Miss makes a ton of sense. So Jackson Dar is a guy.
Starting point is 00:06:06 Great physical talent. He's a good athlete. He's got a really strong arm six foot two 220 pounds size Traits he's got stuff that you would look for. I wouldn't say that he plays similar to Will Levis But when you look at him, he's a guy who maybe he scares you with his decision-making on the field. Um, also Ole Miss is offense, not very similar to an NFL offense. Look, I don't even think that Jackson Dart has as good of an arm. As well, Levis says it's a good arm. It's better than Scherz, but it's not, it's not elite also. And again, very, very little of what he's done at Ole Miss
Starting point is 00:06:46 You can watch on tape and be like, oh, that's an NFL looking thing So good mobility Pretty good arm good accuracy The ball placement he offers some cool stuff to his game like cam ward with some arm angle stuff But the reality is he takes a ton of sacks when he gets pressured He offers some cool stuff to his game like Ham Ward with some arm angle stuff. But the reality is he takes a ton of sacks when he gets pressured, not a guy who's gone past one read a ton because of the offense that he's in. So I think Dar is a late first round guy, an early second round guy. That's where he'll get drafted.
Starting point is 00:07:19 But me personally, I'm not super high on Jackson Dar. And then Jalen Milro is the other guy who I think could sneak into the first round and that's the only after that. I'm sorry. There's no way that the other guys on this list are going to sneak into the first round. I do not buy it. I think that Ward goes number one.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Sanders goes in the first round, Dart goes late first round. And then Jalen Milrow accepted an invite to the combine to be there for the first round. Jaylen Milrow thinks he's going first round. I mean look Jaylen Milrow 6-1, 2-17 would be a top three running quarterback in the NFL immediately. Immediately would be a top three running back in the air quarterback as a runner in the NFL. He's got a high level arm, played in a good offense at Alabama, doesn't take a lot of sacks or got better at it, I guess, is the way you want to put it. But he just doesn't see the field. The accuracy is terrible.
Starting point is 00:08:20 The pro day was terrible. He doesn't have prototypical size playing at Alabama and being that up and down. It's just, you know, with that supporting cast, you should be better. Jalen Milrow is basically Anthony Richardson project level. But if you can get that project early in the second round or in the mid second round, that's a lot better than taking it. Number four overall. So Milrow is an interesting guy in my opinion, but again, cam ward better than taking it number four overall. So Milro is an interesting guy in my opinion, but again, Cam Ward better than all of these players by far. And it's smart for the Tennessee
Starting point is 00:08:50 Titans to pass on all of them to take Cam Ward number one overall with how bad they need quarterback. And I'm not surprised that through the process of not only getting to know Cam Ward, but getting to know the other options, the Titans felt even more strongly that they're taking Ward number one overall. But there are other options on the board at quarterback that some might look at as backup potential, but I just don't think it would be a good idea. Starting point is 00:10:45 Titans fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. It's our first, well, I guess our second episode of the 2025 Locked on Titans NFL draft preview series. Remember we did a full episode on Cam Ward's scouting report yesterday. I'm going to have a film video up on the Tic Tac Titans YouTube channel that's an hour long, breaking down everything great about cam ward on tape on Wednesday. I'm going to have a video about what he needs to improve on and what I'm concerned about. Then on Thursday, I'm going to have a scheme, a scheme fit video on cam ward
Starting point is 00:11:15 all on the Tic Tac Titans YouTube channel. The description for that is down below or the link to that is down below in the description or just search on YouTube Tic Tac Titans. It's going to pull up for you again, 8 PM Eastern on Tuesday night. By the time you hear this probably already be out. So go check that out. I put a lot of work into it. Would appreciate your support.
Starting point is 00:11:36 But when we look at the backup options and these guys are guys who could go in the second round, But I think if the Titans were interested in them, it would be fourth, fifth round, kind of like a, uh, you know, a Robert Griffin, the third and, uh, Kirk cousin situation. Like sometimes teams want to attack the quarterback position. They want to double dip there. And if that happens, the backup options that I think makes sense, um, for any team really at the NFL level.
Starting point is 00:12:05 But if the Titans wanted to do that, Tyler shook out of Louisville. So great size. I mean, he's got great size, six foot four, 219 pounds, prototypical size for an NFL quarterback, can and arm 50, 60 yard throws. He could be accurate down the field, um, gets rid of the ball. Doesn't take a lot of sacks. Uh, he's not super mobile, but he has some mobility for a guy his size. But this is why Tyler shook is not going to go as high as you would
Starting point is 00:12:43 think based on what I just said, he's going to be 26 as a rookie. He's had a ton of injuries. He has no playmaking whatsoever. He's not going to create anything out of structure. That's just simply not going to happen. So with the injury history, his age and the inability to create out of structure, he would have to be so good within structure and so incredible. He would basically have to be Tom Brady.
Starting point is 00:13:11 And with the way that the NFL is played nowadays, having that little out of structure ability, and the thing is, is he's a guy who you hear about quarterbacks that'll stand in the pocket, take the shot and deliver, he's not going to do that. The injuries have led him to kind of backing down and backing away from throws and falling away from throws. And then he can't maximize the arm strength that he has. So to me, people talk about Tyler Shuck as a guy who's going to go, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:43 early second round that a team may take a chance on and think he has starting case. I'm sorry. He's a backup to me. I'm not, I'm not buying it. Um, another guy that I think will be kind of on that line of some teams may talk themselves into, Hey, we can get this guy to be a quarterback for us. Is Quinn yours from Texas. He was a five-star recruit, so that's always
Starting point is 00:14:07 going to stand out to people. Has a good throwing motion, a good touch on the ball. He can do a little bit out of structure. He's not a complete statue. Had some good games against good competition as well. He can work inside an offense with bootlegs and things like that, but he's below average size wise Uh hasn't had any consistent play basically throughout his entire career
Starting point is 00:14:32 Ball security is a huge issue. I mean he had 12 interceptions And 21 worthy plays, uh turnover worthy plays last year Doesn't have great arm strength either so like here doesn't have great arm strength either. So like to me, Quinn, yours is not a starter at the NFL level. He's had injuries as well. Quinn, yours is a backup. If the Titans took Quinn, yours on day three of the draft, I would at least understand it, he could be your backup for cam ward, but I just don't think
Starting point is 00:14:59 that makes a ton of sense for the Titans to go out and put two of their limited draft picks, if they were a team that felt more secure about the rest of the roster, then maybe you could use a pick on a high level backup quarterback that you can develop behind your number one pick, but that's just too many resources for quarterback to make sense. In my opinion. Now guys that are kind of in that range that I don't think are going to be there on day three, because I think they'll get, you know, third round
Starting point is 00:15:31 or fourth round desires. Kyle McCord. So look, I don't like Kyle McCord very much. I saw him play at Ohio state in 2023. I don't think he has high level traits. I don't think he's going to be a starting quarterback at the NFL level. I think it could be a solid backup. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:15:49 But there are some people out there who are talking about, you know, Hey, we could get Kyle McCord and he could work. Look, he's a very confident, comfortable quarterback. And he was even better at Syracuse than he was at Ohio state. Good ball placement, good accuracy. He gets through his reads really quickly, which is important. Uh, throws with anticipation. He'll really anticipate and throw it in there.
Starting point is 00:16:12 He plays with toughness. He's willing to stand in and get the ball out of his hands. That's great. The reality is he makes a lot of turnover worthy place. The ball security is not good. He can lock onto to targets sometimes he doesn't want to pull the trigger on certain throws doesn't really respond to pressure very well so with all of that stuff in mind and not having you know
Starting point is 00:16:36 high-level physical traits you know he's a guy who's aggressive with the ball while not having great traits I'm sorry that just that's a guy who's aggressive with the ball while not having great traits. I'm sorry that just that's a dangerous mixture to me. Kyle McCord kind of reminds me of Mason Rudolph. That's that's what I kind of see there. A guy willing to risk it willing to throw it willing to take the hits willing to put it in but just doesn't have high level physical gifts to kind of play the way that he wants to. Now a guy who I think does have some good physicality to him, who I think out of
Starting point is 00:17:09 all of these quarterbacks, I think this is a guy who I could see in the right system working out as a decent bridge starter, like a Garner, mentioned not comparing their game, but just saying that level of player like a Garner-Menschew who could be a starter in the NFL for a few years. And I think it's Will Howard out of Ohio State. I mean, he is physically a monster, six foot four, 240 pounds, prototypical quarterback size. All right. He reads the field.
Starting point is 00:17:41 He'll go through his progressions. He gets to his third or fourth read consistently, which is huge at the NFL level. The intermediate areas. He's really good and really accurate. Gets through the pass. He's not doesn't have a high level arm, but it's an average arm that can get things done. He gets rid of the ball. He can shake off some pressure in the pocket. This guy isn't a freak athlete, but will Howard can be used in some run game.
Starting point is 00:18:10 I think like Daniel Jones, for example, he's not as good of an athlete as Daniel Jones, but I think he could be used in a similar way in the run game, like a dollar general Josh Allen. You know what I mean? But yeah, of course, verage arm strength doesn't really have a ton of velocity on his throws Not a ton of anticipation at Ohio State A lot of guys got open and he was able to find them but not a lot of anticipation
Starting point is 00:18:39 Wouldn't say that turnovers are a monster issue, but you know, it has thrown some interceptions that weren't great. And you got to wonder if at the NFL level, that would be exacerbated. The last guy that I want to mention is Dylan Gabriel, but Dylan Gabriel is tiny five foot 11, two Oh five. Doesn't have any elite traits. I just, I don't buy Dylan Gabriel at all. It's like bow nicks, but without the athletic upside is what I would say Dylan Gabriel gives you.
Starting point is 00:19:11 He's just a guy with experience and savvy. He's probably going to be a good coach, but you know, just not a guy who has the physical gifts to play in the NFL in my opinion. So if I'm the Titans, I don't want any of these backup quarterback options either. I want a veteran in the room with Cam Ward for his rookie contract. So this isn't the route I would go for the Titans. But these are players who you may be saying, well, if the Titans aren't going to get them, why are we talking about it?
Starting point is 00:19:39 Any of these players could up end up on a division rival. Any of these players could end up on the Titans later in their career. So it's important to have a good understanding of every player at every position that we possibly can so we know the NFL landscape. But with that being said, the Titans are having a visit with a left tackle or an offensive tackle that we've been waiting on for years. I do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by Chewy. You've probably heard of Chewy. They really do have everything you need to keep your pet happy and healthy.

Starting point is 00:21:09 terms and conditions apply, see site for complete details. Titans fans. Let's cap off today's edition of the locked on Titans podcast. We talked about the top quarterbacks in the draft. We talked about the mid tier quarterbacks or the mid to low tier quarterbacks in the NFL draft. I got to be honest with you guys. Outside of the quarterbacks we've talked about so far, Cam Ward, Shnurr Sanders, Jackson Dart, Jalen Milro, Quinn Uers, Tyler
Starting point is 00:21:52 Shook, Will Howard, Kyle McCord, Dylan Gabriel, and even you would put Dylan Gabriel, I would put Dylan Gabriel in this conversation. I don't think any of the other quarterbacks should get drafted. Curtis Roark, Maxasmer, Brady Cook is awful. Okay. Riley Leonard, Graham Mertz, Seth Hennigan, none of these dudes should be drafted. Period. I like when people say this is a bad quarterback class, this is why. Because there are not a lot of even draftable quarterbacks in this one. So with that being said though, do you want to talk about something more topical, more newsy? The Tennessee Titans, according to, I'll find
Starting point is 00:22:31 who it's according to. I didn't recognize the name when I saw it earlier today. I think guy's name is Joe. I'll get it right here in a second. But, but regardless, there was a report that the Titans are having a visit with George Fant. Now I have one of the Tennessee Titans. It was a Joe person, Joe person who is, uh, covering the Panthers for the athletic, I guess, uh, has George Vance visiting with the Tennessee Titans. And look, I think this is an excellent, excellent decision by the Titans. So they need a veteran swing tackle.
Starting point is 00:23:17 You're going to have Latham at right tackle. You're going to have more at left tackle. Who's going to be the backup tackle now some people have mentioned Vance hands Who the Titan sign? Blake hands But hands in my opinion is more of an interior offensive lineman. He could play a little tackle He's six foot five, but hands to me was a guy
Starting point is 00:23:40 Hey, this is our backup interior offensive lineman that is going to compete with a guy like Corey Levin, with a guy like Andrew Rupsich. And that way, if we don't find good value on an interior offensive lineman in the draft, then we have hands. It's our primary backup guard. And again, I think the Titans want to be bigger on the offensive line and defensive line going forward. So a 6-5 former tackle who plays guard, that's probably what the Titans are looking for. But that still leaves them without a good swing tackle.
Starting point is 00:24:20 And right now it would be NPF or it would be Jaylen Duncan. And I'm sorry, but NPF should not be on this team for much longer. The Titans could save $3 million by cutting NPF and NPF's cap hit cap hit this season is 3.3 million. There is no way in the world that you can let NPF be worth $3 million on your cap. Why don't you cut NPF, save the 3 million, and then instantly use that 3 million
Starting point is 00:24:49 on a low veteran deal for George Fant. That's what you need to do. The Titans need a veteran swing tackle, because who knows if they're gonna find proper value at offensive tackle in the draft. Who knows if they're gonna find proper value at interior offensive line in the draft. So if you get George Fant, now you have yourself covered and you know that you can use hands
Starting point is 00:25:11 on the interior offensive line, not at tackle. So you have yourself covered there too. And if you do find good value on a rookie, you could still take them and let them battle with that veteran, create competition on the roster. And that's that offensive tackle or interior offensive line. I'm more inclined to go after interior offensive line because Kevin Zeitler is 35 years old and you're going to need to replace him after the year. So doing that a year ahead by taking an interior offensive lineman early, Lloyd Cushingberry is coming off an Achilles tear.
Starting point is 00:25:43 Is he going to be the same? Those are all fair questions to ask and the Tennessee Titans better have answers to those questions if those questions arise. Also, the Tennessee Titans are gonna have a rookie number one pick at quarterback. You have to protect him. So even if you have Moore Latham Fant and Charles Grant in the third round or fourth round. Even if you have Skoronsky, Zeitler, Hant and Wyatt Millum, Donovan Jackson, uh, Miles Frazier, even if, even if you go with one of those guys and you have a surplus, so what?
Starting point is 00:26:27 This team absolutely could use a surplus of decent offensive linemen. So when injuries inevitably happen, you're still covered and you still have a good offensive line. That should be the goal for the Tennessee Titans. Stack the offensive line without any reservations whatsoever. If that means having four interior offensive linemen and four tackles, all going into training camp thinking they're going to make the roster, then great! That's the kind of competition that makes a football team better.
Starting point is 00:27:02 So I'm all over that. So please bring in George fan. I wish it would have happened two years ago. So he could have played over NPF. I wish it would have happened last year. So he could have played over NPF or Jalen Duncan or John Adjou, like it should have happened years ago. So I'm perfectly fine with doing it now Titans having a visit with George fan if the signing happens. I'll be here to break it down with you guys, but that's going to do it for our quarterback breakdown of the NFL draft.
Starting point is 00:27:35 Remember cam Ward film breakdowns all week at Tic Tac Titans on YouTube. What makes him special? What needs to be cleaned up? How we fits in the, three videos worked really hard on them. Would appreciate some support on those. You guys should go check those out again. 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday night for the good video of what Cam Ward brings
Starting point is 00:27:58 to the table, what makes him special. Then Wednesday noon, 4 p.m. time, Thursday noon, 4 p.m. time, the other videos will p.m. time. The other videos will come out. But that's going to do it for me today, folks. As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
