Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans PERFECT OFFSEASON, Abdul Carter Elevates Defense & Winning the Future

Episode Date: February 6, 2025

OFFSEASON ROAD MAP WEEK DAY 5: The Tennessee Titans may not be able to become a Super Bowl contender overnight, but they can certainly majorly improve in the win-loss column. That starts with an impro...ve at quarterback in Derek Carr, but carries on to the offense line with splash moves like Trey Smith in Free Agency. Finally, the Titans can more than double their win total in 2025 with these moves, but more importantly they can set themselves up for a very profitable 2026. Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=asc Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videos Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! BetterhelpDiscover your relationship “green flags” with BetterHelp. Starting point is 00:00:45 Download the app or head to Fandle.com to get started. It is day five, the last day of off season roadmap week. We started by cleaning our own house and looking at the Titans in-house free agents. Then we looked at cap cuts, trade possibilities and contract management. Then we looked at cap cuts, trade possibilities, and contract management. Then we did a mock free agency, followed by a seven round mock draft. And now I have 57 players on the Tennessee Titans 2025 roster. I'm going to go through the entire roster that I've assembled. And then at the end of the show, tell you exactly how many games I think this team could win
Starting point is 00:01:24 and why I think they're so set up for future success. Before we get into all of it, do want to thank you for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen each and every day, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content, all year round, always for free. Speaking of every day shout out to my every dayers out there
Starting point is 00:01:51 tuning in Monday through Friday. If you aren't an everyday or you need to be one because got a mock draft Monday coming up right around the corner. Can't wait to dive into free agency, the draft and all the breaking news that happens this time of year. But on my mock free agency episode on Wednesday, and if you missed any of these episodes, you can go back, listen to those, their evergreen content, but the big splash, obviously that caught everybody's attention was that I got Derek Hart quarterback.
Starting point is 00:02:19 And at the end of the day, I get that there is limited upside with Derek Hart quarterback. What, what people aren't understanding here. When I am putting together this Tennessee Titans roster, I am not trying to make the Titans a Superbowl contender this year. I'm not trying to fix everything overnight. The Tennessee Titans from their statements when Mike Borganzi was hired, when Chad Breaker spoke with the media, all of their statements intimated that they are going to
Starting point is 00:02:44 take their time to build this, that there's going to be a level of patience. They need to turn this roster around. There are a lot of problems to fix. So what I wanted to do, what my goal was is just make the Titans incrementally better. I'm not going to go from terrible to great overnight. I'm trying to make the Titans incrementally better with the moves that
Starting point is 00:03:03 we make and set them up to have future success and Derek Carr on a two-year contract gives the Titans the ability to have a veteran quarterback who is an average quarterback I what really bothers me is the inability for there to be a middle ground today. You talk to people online I look in my comments. I look on Twitter and it's he's elite or he's trash. He's, he's great. Or he's a bum. There is nowhere in between. And the response I got to saying the Titans would be smart to grab Derek
Starting point is 00:03:35 cars, their bridge quarterback was that Derek car is garbage. Derek cars. You guys are just out of your minds. You, you like, if that's your reaction to Derek cars, that he's garbage and he's terrible, you're just truly out of your minds. You like, if that's your reaction to Derek Carr is that he's garbage and he's terrible, you're just truly out of your mind. Every single possible statistic, every single possible viewing of the Saints as a football team, whether it be film or the TV copies or Derek Carr is an average quarterback. He's anywhere from 14 to 22. He's just an average quarterback. He's not great. He's not terrible. So let's just have a dose of reality.
Starting point is 00:04:06 Having Derek Carr is the Titans quarterback in 2025 would be a massive upgrade over Mason Rudolph and Will Levis who are both backup level quarterbacks. Derek Carr isn't a great quarterback. He's not good. I wouldn't even call him top 12. He's just an average solid starting quarterback in the NFL and the Titans would love to have that.
Starting point is 00:04:26 And Brian Callahan would love to have that while he's trying to save his job. So I got Derek Carr as starting quarterback. Mac Jones is the backup as a young developmental option for cheap. We're not paying a bunch of money into the future. I'm not giving Derek Carr some huge contract. I'm paying him two years, $20 million a year for a $40 million deal. He's a bridge quarterback for the Titans. And even if you want the Titans to go sign or go draft a rookie quarterback, a veteran bridge quarterback is going to be what this team does. So you better pick.
Starting point is 00:04:59 Do you want Derek Carr? Do you want Kirk Cousins? You want to pay Sam Darnold $40 million a year for three more seasons? I don't. Derek Carr is easily the best option. I would like Aaron Rodgers, but I talked about, look at Aaron Rodgers cap situation. He's not going to get released by the Jets. So the realistic best option that financially makes the most sense is Derek Carr. And that's whether the Titans draft a quarterback or not.
Starting point is 00:05:21 In my scenario, they don't, but like just strap in. Like that kind of quarterback is something the Titans are gonna go get. So Mac Jones is the backup. We moved to running back, Tony Pollard, Tajay Spears. Obviously you're bringing both of those guys back. Tony Pollard had a fantastic year. You need to see more out of Tajay Spears this year
Starting point is 00:05:40 with his ability to stay on the field. But because of that, I drafted Ali Gordon, the running back out of Oklahoma state in the sixth round, he's a big bodied six foot one, two 30 physical downhill runner, great in gap scheme runs, which is what the Tennessee Titans want to do. Ali Gordon is a third running back in the sixth round of the draft. That's a great value.
Starting point is 00:05:59 And then at wide receiver, I wish I could have got more done at wide receiver, but I liked the additions here. receiver. I wish I could have got more done at wide receiver, but I liked the additions here. Calvin Ridley, NWI brought back Tyler Boyd drafted Isaiah Bond in the third round as a deep threat as a speedster as a guy that Titans can get the ball to in space. Remember Mike Borganzi came from Kansas City where they drafted Xavier worthy where they like Mikhoel Hardman that they had Tyree kill in the fifth round. They always get these speed small wide receivers.
Starting point is 00:06:26 They went out and got Hollywood Brown. So clearly, Mike Borganzi isn't scared of going out and getting the guy in that mold. Even if it's not my favorite mold of wide receiver, I admit. But Isaiah Bond can make plays in the offense, be a slot guy, be a potential returner. Ola Mata Zacchaeus is your insurance for that type of player. He can play inside and outside those. Zacchaeus is your insurance for that type of player.
Starting point is 00:06:45 He can play inside and outside those. Zacchaeus really is a versatile guy, although he's a smaller size at five foot nine. So you get him in the building. And then Jacori Brooks is your six foot one, physical ex receiver who you can develop going forward. He's a good route runner, good and contested catches. I think he can contribute right away.
Starting point is 00:07:03 Got him in the seventh round out of Louisville. And then you bring Bryce Oliver back, who showed to be a very, very good special teams player at tight end, Chigga Conquo, Josh Wiley, David Martin Robinson gets his opportunity to bump up to the third tight end spot. And then you have Thomas Odukoye coming back as well. The Tennessee Titans kept five tight ends
Starting point is 00:07:22 on last year's roster, and they barely used either of the tight ends at the bottom of the roster and Odecoye or DMR throughout the season. So they had to have done that with a plan in mind. And I'm sorry, but if you kept five tight ends last year and barely used them throughout the season, and then those guys aren't developed enough to be elevated into higher roles this year with DMR going into the Nick Van Et role
Starting point is 00:07:45 or Thomas O'Doukoye going in the Nick Van Et role. If those guys aren't ready to take that next step up, then you completely failed with keeping five tight ends last year and it was a waste of time. So Derek Card, Mack Jones at quarterback, Tony Pollard, Tajay Spears, Ollie Gordon at running back, Ridley, NWI, Tyler Boyd,, Ola Meda, Zaccheaus, Jacori Brooks and Bryce Oliver at wide receiver, Chigga Conquo, Josh Wiley, DMR, David Martin Robinson, and Thomas Soto-Koyate tight end. That's my skill position players on the offensive side of the ball
Starting point is 00:08:15 for the 2025 Tennessee Titans with some signings, some draft picks. But now it's time to get into the trenches. I made a big splash on the offensive line, looked at depth on the offensive line so the Titans don't have to be in the situation they were in last year anymore going forward. And we added some talent in the pass rush as well. Do you want to let you guys know that today's episode is sponsored by better help?

Starting point is 00:09:55 That's better help. H E L P dot of the locked on Titans podcast. It's my off season roadmap recap. I went through every single step of the off season this week. And this is what I finally came out with. Let me know how many games you think this Tennessee Titans roster would win next year. We go to the offensive line where I made maybe
Starting point is 00:10:39 I would say the second splashiest move of the off season. I think I have in the number one pick. It's hard to do something more splashy than trading back with the number one pick, which I've done in my mock draft. But I would say my other biggest move was on the offensive line. And at the end of the day,
Starting point is 00:10:56 the Tennessee Titans need to make a major investment in the offensive line. You're gonna have a bridge veteran quarterback on a cheap contract, or you're gonna have a young rookie quarterback on a cheap contract, either way, the Tennessee Titans are going to have the money that they need to continue to pour resources into fixing the offensive line. I think it's to a point now where it's just like, it doesn't matter what it
Starting point is 00:11:15 takes, fix the offensive line, whatever it takes, like, I don't care if it makes this spot bad, I don't care if it makes that spot bad. Like we got to see what this team looks like with a good offensive line because it has been a destructor of the team for far too long. So on the offensive line, I made a big splash at right guard with Trey Smith from the Kansas city chiefs, Tennessee Volk, Tennessee kid, bring him back. He's probably won a three-peat at this point. Even if it's just two championships and they lose that third Super Bowl on Sunday,
Starting point is 00:11:50 either way, doesn't matter. He's won enough. Come get your big-time contract. Come home and build a new winner. You were part of a huge winning dynasty in Kansas City. Now bring your experience and your skill set. Come back home. Get paid handsomely, be with your family back in your home
Starting point is 00:12:08 state with no state taxes and help build the Tennessee Titans the hometown. NFL team help build them up into a playoff contender that you already came from. The Mike Borganzi connection. He obviously knows him very well, knows his representation as well. Sure, that showed grease the skids for
Starting point is 00:12:24 the conversation about the contract. I gave Trace Smith a four year, 82 million dollar contract from the Tennessee Titans. He can be right guard. And then I added Jedrick Wills in free agency. And I added Ariante Ursory in the second round of the NFL draft, the talented offensive tackle with his technique and his athleticism out of Minnesota. So now you have JC Latham at left tackle.
Starting point is 00:12:49 You have Peter Skoronsky at left guard. You have Daniel Brunskill backing him up at left guard and can back up at right guard too. You have Lloyd Cushionberry at center. I drafted Clay Webb, the former five star recruit out of Jacksonville state in the sixth round or in the seventh round. He's a backup center and backup guard on the interior. I brought Andrew Rupcich back on the offensive line as well as a, uh, uh,
Starting point is 00:13:13 exclusive rights free agent, Trey Smith, obviously at right guard, Jedrick Wills and Ariante Ursory can battle. I only paid Jedrick Wills $2 million. So him and Ariante Ursory can battle it out for the right tackle position. Also, whoever loses the right tackle position between Jedrick Wills and Ariante Ursory. Now they're the number one swing tackle and Ursory has experience at left tackle from college, but played some right tackle with the senior
Starting point is 00:13:41 bull and looked fine. Jedrick Wills played left tackle for the Browns, but played his entire college career at right tackle, so he's got versatility to play both tackle spots. So now your top three tackles. Are all significantly better than your right tackle or your second or third or fourth tackle from last year. You have completely fixed the tackle position as best as you possibly can. You can't know for certain, but you add a veteran with starting experience
Starting point is 00:14:11 with a connection to the offensive line coach, Bill Callahan, you bring in a topic again, I couldn't use my second round pick on a better wide receiver and made wide receiver better, but I chose to build through the trenches and fix offensive line. That is the decision that I made with my second round pick. I said, I could take a wide receiver, could take Savion Williams out of TCU. But I said, no, we're fixing the trenches. We're building through the trenches. Our first two picks in the draft, we're trading down, but we're attacking
Starting point is 00:14:44 the defensive and offensive lines. So Latham, Skoronsky, Cushinberry, Tracemith, Jedrick Wills, or Ariante, Ursery at right tack. There we go. With Brunskill, Clay Webb, Rupsich, it's death. Love that for the Titans offensive line. We moved to the defensive line though, where obviously I made a big splash as well. The splashiest move of the entire offseason is trading down from number one to number three,
Starting point is 00:15:10 getting a 20-26 first round pick next year from the Giants and still drafting Abdul Carter, the top player in the draft in my opinion, and the edge rusher. And quite frankly, Abdul Carter is the consensus number one player in the NFL draft. Some of you guys responded to me saying he's the best player in the draft. Acting like I was crazy. And it was a hot take when the consensus opinion is that Abdul Carter is the number one player in the draft. So it's not like I'm saying, you know, Jack Sawyer is the
Starting point is 00:15:38 number one player in the draft. Like it's not some crazy hot take that I'm saying here, even if you don't think it's Abdul Carter, you think it's one of the quarterbacks or Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter at worst is the fourth best player in the draft. So what are we even talking about here? But with that being said, obviously you add Abdul Carter with the third overall pick after a trade down, getting a 20, 26 first from the Giants, adding pick number 65 in the third round this year.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Really good trade for the Titans. I hope they're able to execute that, but you get Abdul Carter, you pair him with Harold Landry on the edge. There's your two starters. You had Baron Browning, high upside 25 year old athletic versatile guy from the Cardinals. And you have Arden Key. So those are your backup edge rushers. And then you still have Jaylen Harrell, the seventh round pick from last year, who will continue to develop and play on special teams. And then on the defensive line, you have Jeffrey Simmons still, you have to Vondre Sweat, it knows. And then you have Sebastian Joseph Day, who I brought back.
Starting point is 00:16:35 Love that three man defensive line for the Titans is the depth behind that. We brought back Keandre Coburn, who had really good moments backing up to Vondre Sweat. And obviously there's the mentorship factor there with Coburn being a guy who went to Texas and was to Vondre Sweatt's mentor in college is still now. So I do like bringing him back. Shamar Turner though, I drafted in the fifth round for the, or in the fourth round for the Tennessee Titans.
Starting point is 00:17:00 Shamar, it was the fifth round for the Tennessee Titans. Shamar Turner is a versatile interior defensive lineman from Texas A&M. He is a bit of a tweener. He's not quite big enough to be a three technique, but he's not quite athletic enough to play on the defensive end in like a four, three. But I can use that versatility and I can use his explosion and I can use his pass rush ability and his penetration ability. Having a guy like that who could be a five technique in your three, four defense,
Starting point is 00:17:29 or he could play on the inside or the outside in rush packages on third down. That's gonna be his role early on when Tavandre Sweat is tired. You need a very good interior penetrator for pass rush. You bring in Shemar Turner, you let him go next to Jeffrey Simmons with Carter and Landry. You can rotate Arden Key into that spot. It would give the Titans a much more dynamic pass rush group with Simmons, Sweatt, SJD, Shemar Turner, and then Landry, Carter, Key, and Browning. That's eight guys in a rotation that you can put combinations of them together. And I think if you're going to be a team without elite quarterback play, then you have to be a team that has a fantastic pass rush
Starting point is 00:18:09 and you have to have depth there. That's the model. You look at the 49ers, you look at the Eagles, teams that don't have Patrick Malmes, even the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when they went with Tom Brady and won the Super Bowl in 2020, the pass rush, the rotation,
Starting point is 00:18:23 it wasn't just a couple of good pass rushers, it was a complete rotation of seven to eight really good pass rushers and that's what I've given to the Tennessee Titans. At linebacker, I brought in Jamie and Sherwood, the young, athletic, violent linebacker from the New York Jets after cutting Kenneth Murray, replaced him with Sherwood on the same exact contract, love that. And then it's time for one of these rookie linebackers to step up and start. Cedric Gray, James Williams, I brought back Otis Reese, Luke Gifford back for special teams purposes. And then Chance Campbell, Jack Gibbons,
Starting point is 00:18:54 I'm gonna bring one of those guys back, whoever's healthy and ready to play. I don't think that Gibbons is gonna be ready to go for the season at any point in time with how late and how significant his injury was. So Chance Campbell, who played great in the preseason last year before injury, bring him back as that sixth linebacker. That's what I've done on the front seven of the defense and on the offensive line, very excited about the trenches. And with Mike Borganzi saying that he wanted to build through the trenches and
Starting point is 00:19:20 start there and then build the perimeter after that. Obviously they're not gonna draft all D-line and all offensive line in the draft. They're gonna mix in some perimeter players, but you really wanna focus your resources. And with Trey Smith, Abdul Carter, Shamar Turner, Jedrick Wills, Ariante Ursery, Clay Webb, I've really devoted a lot of resources to the trenches.
Starting point is 00:19:40 So I felt like I felt, I stuck true to what the Tennessee Titans vision and focus is going to be this year while also making sure that we made improvements. But with that being said, we're going to hit the special teams, the defensive backfield, and I'm going to tell you how many games I think this team wins. Starting point is 00:22:26 It's day five of off season Roadmap Week doing my ideal scenario off season for the Tennessee Titans. We have gone through what the roster looks like after all my moves quarterback running back skill positions, offensive line, defensive line, edge and linebacker. Now I want to talk about the secondary. There weren't quite as many additions in the secondary and on special teams as we got in all the other spots. Quite frankly, I stayed pretty, pretty firm in the secondary.
Starting point is 00:22:56 But at the end of the day, I think the Titans have a lot of secondary talent. They just needed to stay healthy. Now, before I get into the final parts of the roster and how many games I think they win, do want to thank you again for making locked on Titans your first listen each and every day. Been getting a ton of support recently. Um, won some awards, got some shout outs on some big platforms. Things have been going really, really great for the show.
Starting point is 00:23:20 And I can't tell you all how much I am thankful for all of you, but I'm going to be talking about that later, uh, or at the beginning of next week, but with that being said Sneed Cheeto Roger McCreary Jarvis Brownlee jr. Brought back Darryl Baker brought back Justin Hardy, of course for special teams at cornerback at safety Amani hooker at cornerback at safety, a Monte hooker, quandary digs. And in the third round, I drafted, uh, I'm in worry the state, Nick, I'm a worry, the safety out of South Carolina, who I think can be used like a Jamal Adams or like a Derwin James or like a Kyle Hamilton who Denaud Wilson had in Baltimore in a 2023.
Starting point is 00:24:00 So I love the fit of Nick, I'm on worry as a box safety for the Titans who can be that That dime linebacker and again be used like a Kyle Hamilton or a Derwin James I really like that potential a lot of people don't think that almond worry will drop that far But hey I guess we never really know where guys are gonna go in the draft at the end of the day brought Mike Brown back As well, I'd be okay if they didn't but you know, I'm a Mike Brown guy So I decided to bring him back, um, at special teams, Nick, Falk, Brian Stonehouse, Morgan Cox brought them all back.
Starting point is 00:24:30 We're going to keep them around for as long as they want to be with all of that. Again, I upgraded the quarterback position with Derek Carr for Mason Rudolph and uh, Will Levis. I know a lot of people don't like Derek Carr, but I think you're really underselling who he is as a player. I don't think he's great. I don't think he's awesome. He's just an average starting quarterback. But we all sat here last year and said if the Titans just had average starting quarterback play last year, they probably would have won five or six games. They would have been a lot better with average quarterback play.
Starting point is 00:25:01 It could have changed the whole season. Brian Callahan even said himself that those first two games of the year where the Titans lose to the Bears and lose to the Jets after being in great positions to beat them both, it just ruined their season and set them on a bad course. But if they just had, if Derek Carr was the quarterback for the Jets in the Bears game, the Titans win. So like if Derek Carr is the quarterback for the game against the Colts in week six, the Titans win. So the Titans would have been like four and one if Derek Carr would have been their quarterback at the beginning of last year. So did that. Mix the offensive line with Jedrick Wills, Trey Smith, Ariyonte Ursory, not only for the now, but also for the later, gave good depth. Totally remodeled the pass rush, Adam Baron Browning and
Starting point is 00:25:47 Abdul Carter and Schmarth Turner into the mix. Obviously we're still a little weak at linebacker. Will quandary digs and Imani Hooker be able to stay healthy? We're still a little weak at safety. Obviously you're gonna wait for Ariante Ursary and you want him to pan out right away, but it may take a year for him to be the true starting right tackle for the team. Tight end, we don't have a big time tight end, it's still a bunch of smaller role players.
Starting point is 00:26:16 Like I said, wide receiver still needs help and we still need a big time quarterback. That's still gonna be something that's on the agenda going forward in 2026, but I improved the quarterback position. I made big improvements on the offensive line, big improvements to the pass rush. And I think trying to fix things on this roster, that's about as good as you can possibly do. I think this team as I have constructed it would go seven and 10. I think that would be in the hunt on the bubbles. I think that this team that I have constructed would be as good as what people were hoping last year's Titans team would be about seven and ten. Maybe they win eight games.
Starting point is 00:26:55 I predicted that the Titans would win eight games last year. So I think this team that I have put together actually would be able to do that. And I think that would keep Brian Callahan's job. It would keep Brian Callahan around into 2026. And then the Titans go into the 2026 off season. They need a big time linebacker. They need wide receiver. They have an extra first round pick.
Starting point is 00:27:16 They have a sixth round pick from trading Traylon Birx. They have a fifth round pick from trading Will Levis after the draft. So we have a ton of extra picks. Finally, the Titans have a third round pick in 2026 and we're ready to make a move up the board to get our quarterback if we need to. So I love what I've done here. Obviously I did it. Let me know how many games you think this team would win. I do want to say the final thing. I think the Eagles win the Super Bowl. I think Saquon Barkley's MVP. So, um, I've been researching the game all week for Locked on NFL and that's where I'm finally at. So let me know how many games you think this Tennessee Titans roster would win. Give me a grade A, F. What do you think I did here? But with that being said, that will conclude off season roadmap week.
Starting point is 00:28:06 Again, if you miss any of the individual episodes from this week, go back and check those out, but that's going to do it for me today, folks, as always. I am your host Tyler Rowland and this was Locked on Titans. Thanks for watching guys!
