Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans PICK JC Latham in the 2024 NFL Draft, Losing Joe Alt, Malik Nabers & Next Needs
Episode Date: April 26, 2024The Tennessee Titans select J.C. Latham in the 2024 NFL Draft and get their potential left tackle of the future. Latham is a strong and powerful blocker with a ton of upside, but some area of concern ...as well. The pick is good, but missing out on Joe Alt and Malik Nabers leaves a sour taste in your mouth. Going forward the Titans still have plenty of needs to address as the draft rolls on. tackle out of Alabama. A bit of a shocker to some, but we definitely saw this pick coming.
I'm going to break it all down, talk about whether Latham can play at left tackle,
what it means going forward for the Titans.
A ton to discuss here on a live edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.

Here on the Locked on Titans podcast,
again, I am your host, Tyler
Rowland, nearly 25 years
as a Tennessee Titans fanatic,
a certified film junkie,
breaking down the X's and O's with you all year long.
And I've covered the team for USA Today,
Sports Illustrated, a ton of things going on here.
I got a lot of draft coverage coming up,
but JC Latham at number seven.
Let's get it, folks.
All right, look, I'm just going to cut straight to the chase here.
I wanted the Tennessee Titans to
select Joe Alt, but he went off the board at five. I wanted the Tennessee Titans to then take Malik
Nabors, but he went off the board at six. And if you're looking at where the Tennessee Titans are
right now, taking an offensive tackle over a wide receiver is a move that we all have to accept as
a smart decision here. And Brian Callahan, head coach of the Tennessee Titans, already said in a press conference that once they got Calvin Ridley, they thought they
were in a good place at wide receiver. And that led them to go on with JC Latham, who, according
to the head coach, was the top player on the Tennessee Titans board. And look, there may have
been other options that we were interested in here,
but JC Latham has the potential to be the best offensive tackle in this draft class.
There was never a doubt about it. I did a film breakdown on a ton of offensive tackles,
including JC Latham over on the Tic Tac Titans film breakdown channel here on YouTube. And you
could see on tape what made JC Latham so special. I mean, he is an absolute mauler, a bulldozer.
Out of Alabama, obviously, 21.2 years old.
So this guy just turned 21 years old,
and he is just scratching the surface of what he is able to do.
6'5",.6.
So he's close to 6'6".
340 pounds.
I think he could stand to maybe drop 5 to 10 pounds at the next level.
I'll talk about that in a moment.
But 340 pounds, 6'5", with 35 1⁄8 inch arms and 11 1⁄8 inch hands.
Okay, look, we don't have to have the conversations about are his arms long enough?
Is he big enough?
Is he strong enough? Is he strong enough?
Does he need to add weight? This guy is tailor-made an ideal offensive tackle size. Okay? Huge arms,
huge hands, huge body, thick hips, thick waist, thick core. I mean, this guy is absolutely built
like a brick house. JC Latham, 21.2 years old.
So again, think he's that size and he's that young.
It's something that the Titans brass,
Rancor Thon and Brian Callahan are already talking about.
Like this guy is huge and he's only 21 years old.
So where the board fell,
like I told you guys yesterday on the show,
in my everyday as well, remember,
I'm okay with this.
I am simply okay with this decision.
Roma Dunze was right there.
But as they have explained it, take Calvin Ridley.
You got DeAndre Hopkins.
Maybe there's long-term something in the works for DeAndre Hopkins.
There are going to be options in the second round.
So J.C. Latham at seven does make a ton of sense. And you knew that it would be an option for the Tennessee Titans.
Let me know down below, everyone watching,
let me know down below,
what grade would you give the pick of J.C. Latham at number seven?
So I want to dive into Latham's background a little bit here.
So we talked about the massive size, all right?
But he also was a top recruit, a five-star recruit in high school for IMG Academy,
one of the best programs in the entire country.
And what position did J.C. Latham play when he was one of the top recruits in the country
at one of the best high schools in the country?
What position did he play?
Left tackle.
We'll talk more about that left tackle potential going forward, but keep that in
mind. He played left tackle while he was in high school. 41 games played for Alabama in college in
a three-year career, and he became a starter in his second year. We're all worried about injuries.
Can people stay healthy? Can the Titans get away from the injury bug? Well, you look at J.C. Latham
over the past two years, 13 of 13 games played
and started, 14 of 14 games played and started. So this is a guy who's durable, who's out on the
field. So we talk about the background at one of the top high schools, what he did in college at
Alabama, winning a ton of games on a great offensive line. Then you talk about the size
that we discussed, 6'5", 340, long arms,
huge hands, only 21 years old.
But think about his game, what he does as a player,
like I broke down on the film breakdown a couple of weeks ago.
The anchor.
We have worried about anchor problems with the Tennessee Titans offensive line
for so long.
Guys getting a hand in their chest and getting bulldozed back into the quarterback.
That is over now.
JC Latham has an incredible
anchor to sit down and stop
pass rushers in their tracks. His grip,
I promise you, go watch
the breakdown. I'll have more breakdowns coming
here in the week as well.
But his ability to get his hands
on defenders, his strength
in his hands, his grip, once
he gets his hands on you and locks you up,
it's over for you.
It's absolutely over for you.
I mean, just incredible strength.
And again, the grip in his hands, the power, the drive, and the finish.
Okay, everybody was like, Joe Alt's overrated.
He doesn't play with power.
He's a finesse offensive tackle.
He doesn't drive people off the line of
scrimmage. He doesn't have a good anchor. He's not going to be able to hold up when he gets
bulled into the backfield. All right, if you're somebody who was worried about all that, you got
the exact opposite in J.C. Latham. Incredible anchor, incredible power. Watching J.C. Latham
down block at the line of scrimmage and drive drive other guys 5 yards, 10 yards back.
It is magnificent to watch.
There is no doubt about it.
His tape is absolutely incredible.
So anchor, grip, power, drive, finish.
But I'll give the honest assessment.
There are some things to worry about here.
The quickness.
Can he mirror faster pass rushers? He had 18 penalties in his last two
years in college. Is that something that's going to follow him into the NFL? Can that be coached
up? Those are things to worry about. But again, what are we talking about here at the end of the
day? We are talking about a six foot five, 340 pound behemoth offensive tackle who's only 21
years old and just turned 21 years old,
who has been one of the best football players in the world at his level for six, seven years
running with incredible traits, who gave up two sacks and 30 pressures in his career,
over a thousand pass blocking snaps, only gave up two sacks and 30 pressures.
blocking snaps. Only gave up two sacks and 30 pressures.
I mean, there is a lot to like here,
even if the board didn't necessarily fall in a
way that helped the Tennessee Titans.
But with that being said,
the question now becomes,
can J.C. Latham
play left tackle?
Brian Callahan has already talked about
that. I'm going to tell you what Brian Callahan
said. I'm going to tell you how I feel about it,
and we'll go back to looking at J.C. Latham as a player
and what it could mean for the Titans going forward.
Also, we got to talk about the way the board fell
and what the Titans should do next.
So much to discuss on a live edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.

Titans fans, let's continue today's live edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
The Tennessee Titans select J.C. Latham offensive tackle out of Alabama at number seven. We talked about Latham as a player.
Latham with his measurements, his size, all of that, his background.
But now we got to ask, how does J.C. Latham fit on the Tennessee Titans?
Can he play left tackle?
How does he fit within
this offensive line that desperately needs help? Well, we have heard from Brian Callahan. We have
heard from J.C. Latham himself and through J.C. Latham, we have heard from Bill Callahan as well.
So let me start there. I know that not everyone is happy here. I could see it in the chat.
Again, let me know your grade for this pick for the Tennessee Titans.
I know that not everyone is happy here.
A lot of people wanted Joe Ault.
A lot of people wanted Malik Nabors.
But they went off the board before.
A lot of people wanted Romo Dunze.
I think that would have been the direction the Titans should go in.
But we all have to recognize here.
What we think about these players may not be the case.
All right?
If you posted your draft thoughts,
this is OT1, this is wide receiver 1, this is QB1,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, and you posted that every single year,
you would not be right all the time.
And there is a great chance here, J.C. Latham has all of the potential to prove everybody wrong here and be the best offensive tackle in this draft class. So you
want to know who believes that? Bill Callahan. So let's talk about this. Can J.C. Latham play left
tackle? Well, according to Brian Callahan, J.C. Latham thinks that he's athletic enough to play left tackle.
And not only does J.C. Latham think that he's athletic enough to play left tackle,
but Bill Callahan himself thinks that J.C. Latham is athletic enough to play left tackle.
thinks that J.C. Latham is athletic enough to play left tackle.
Bill Callahan told J.C. Latham, you are athletic enough to play left tackle.
So, let's just for a second.
Are you going to doubt Bill Callahan?
Do you think you know more about offensive line
and offensive tackle than Bill Callahan?
Ask yourself that question. One of the best
offensive line coaches in the history of the NFL. Do you think that you know more about
offensive line than Bill Callahan? At the end of the day, that's what it comes down to.
I mean, we got people in the chat saying fire Bill Callahan. I mean, how crazy is this? Look, you want examples.
Bill Callahan took Tyron Smith.
Tyron Smith, who some Titans fans wanted to sign,
is a 33-year-old offensive tackle.
He took Tyron Smith, who was a right tackle in college,
and turned him into a left tackle.
So, I mentioned earlier that one of the issues
in my mind with J.C. Latham
was the weight.
Okay?
340 pounds.
Some people said he might have played at 360.
Okay?
So,
if he were to drop
5, 10 pounds, 330, 335,
do you think that the speed would be less of a concern?
The quickness would be less of a concern?
The ability to mirror a pass rusher would be less of a concern
if he played at a lower weight?
I mean, we're talking about a guy who is insanely athletic at the end of the day.
I mean, I was watching the broadcast and they were talking about J.C. Latham
being a track star.
A guy who is 6'5", close to 6'6", and 340 pounds.
Think about that.
It's pretty crazy. This is a guy who was dunking the ball in middle school. He was dunking the ball in middle school. Like, we are talking about a freak athlete. I know that at Alabama, he played very heavy, played tons of power. I mean, this is a guy who, again, like I just said,
lettered in track.
41 feet, 4-inch shot put as a freshman.
I mean, this is raw power.
And we talked about Joe Alt, alright, and what he could do.
And there's no secrets here.
I really wanted Joe Alt. I like Joe Alt.
I think he's going to be a fantastic player. But everyone out there
who was saying, hey, Joe Alt maybe doesn't have the high-end upside to be the best tackle in the
NFL. Well, JC Latham does have all of that upside that you wanted.
Alright? He has the raw power, the size, the ability
to be an athlete at the end of the day.
And again, played left tackle his entire time in high school,
and Bill Callahan himself, who we all got on here when Bill Callahan got hired,
and we said, this man is going to change our offensive line.
Well, is he going to or not?
Have you lost faith already?
That's the question.
So you ask me, can J.C. Latham
play left tackle?
Bill Callahan says he can.
So I believe that he can.
And even if he can't play left tackle,
he's going to be a great right tackle.
Think about what happened this weekend.
Think about what happened.
Penne Sewell.
Penne Sewell. Imagine if you would about what happened. Pene Sewell. Pene Sewell.
Imagine if you would be mad about having Pene Sewell. Think about that right
now in your head. Pene Sewell just
signed the richest offensive line
contract in the NFL. Right
tackle for the Detroit Lions.
If somebody told you right now you get
Pene Sewell, are you going to be like,
oh, I don't know if he can play left tackle. I don't like
the pick.
So, look.
I know
that I said on the thing I would be
okay with this pick. And I am okay
with it. Would I have liked neighbors? Would I have liked
all? Absolutely. But we have to
calm down some of the people freaking
out about the Tennessee Titans getting
J.C. Latham at seven.
This is more of a risky pick in my opinion because all and neighbors were so sure in my opinion
that they would be good, solid players.
But J.C. Latham has the potential to be the best offensive tackle in the NFL.
That's how good he could be.
That's the potential that he has.
And we have the best offensive line coach in the NFL
to get him to that potential.
So it's hard for me to be mad
about the situation that the Titans are in right now.
Taking JC Latham, you have the offensive tackle.
Now let's get down to business.
Get some other guys in here.
Latham at left tackle.
Peter Skowronski at left guard.
Cushenberry at center.
Brunskiller-Raydins at right guard.
We'll figure out right tackle as we go.
There's still guys available in the draft.
There's still guys available on the free agency market.
So, again, am I hype?
Am I hype?
No.
But I am okay with this pick of JC Latham,
and I think there's definitely potential there
that it could turn out.
But what do the Titans do next?
What happens next?
And I am going to take some time at least to be sad about the way the board fell for the Titans
and remind you guys of something I was worried about back in January.
Before we do that, I do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by Monopoly Go.
I am a very competitive person. I'm sure all of you know that that is true. And my competitive side is a big fan
of Monopoly Go. I'm sure you've heard of it. It's been downloaded over 150 million times.
It's a great twist on Monopoly where you play not one, but hundreds of Monopoly boards in crazy

The Tennessee Titans select J.C. Latham.
I think that J.C. Latham can play left tackle.
I think that's absolutely possible.

Also,
I broke down J.C. Latham's film,
a quick film breakdown on J.C. Latham
on the Tic Tac Titans YouTube channel.
That's my film breakdown channel.
Go check that out.
I'm going to have more J.C. Latham film
coming this weekend
into Monday. I get 6 to have more J.C. Latham film coming this weekend into Monday.
Again, 6'5", 340 pounds, just turned 21 years old,
35-inch arms, 11-inch hands, an absolute monster
who played at the best high school football program at left tackle,
who played at the best college program in Alabama at right tackle,
started 27 out of 27 games over the last two years,
durable, reliable, healthy,
incredible anchor, incredible grip, incredible power,
drives guys off the ball in the run game,
can finish guys in the run game and in pass blocking,
only gave up two sacks and 30 pressures and 1,000 pass blocking snaps.
Some questions about quickness, some questions about mirror.
Did have 18 penalties over two years.
Cleaned it up, though. Went from 11 to 7.
I know that not everybody is exactly excited about the pick,
but this pick makes a ton of sense.
And again, Bill Callahan himself said that he thinks J.C. Latham
is athletic enough to play left tackle.
himself said that he thinks J.C. Latham is athletic enough to play left tackle.
So, again, I'm okay with this pick.
Am I hype?
Am I happy?
I'm okay with the pick.
All right?
And I'm seeing people put Brock Bowers went to the Raiders.
What?
That's insane.
All right?
I do want to say this.
The Tennessee Titans tried to trade back.
Okay?
Rand Carthon said already that they were fielding calls.
They were looking at offers.
But, J.C. Latham was the best player on their board.
So they needed to be blown away to be able to move back.
And they weren't blown away.
They were not blown away by any of the trade offers.
Minnesota wasn't wanting to give up 23 and 11.
They just did not get a good...
That's why all of you guys all the time are screaming,
trade back, trade back, trade back.
Well, you can only trade back if somebody is willing to give up enough to trade up.
And no one was.
So the Titans didn't trade back.
And they took the best player on their board,
which was J.C. Latham.
Now, like I said,
we got to take a minute and pour one out.
Seein' Joe Alt go off the board. Seein out. Seeing Joe Alt go off the board.
Seeing Malik Nabors go off the board.
I knew Marvin Harrison Jr. wasn't an option.
I told you guys this for months.
Marvin Harrison Jr. is not realistic.
He's going top four.
But man, it hurt.
It hurt to watch Joe Alt
and Malik Nabors go off the board.
Those were my top two realistic options.
Again, Marvin Harrison Jr. was my top option,
but he was not realistic.
My top two realistic options
were Joe Alt and Malik Nabors,
and to see them go boom, boom,
and you know, I got a lot of flack.
I got a lot of heat from a lot of people online
when I said that the Titans win against the Jaguars was a mistake
and that it hurt their situation.
I called it a franchise-altering win,
which is funny because, you know, think about it the other way.
And if the Titans would have lost in week 18,
they would have picked six instead of seven.
The strength of schedule would have flipped
because Jacksonville would have won
and the Titans played Jacksonville twice.
And it would have changed the strength of their opponents
and their record.
The Titans would have picked sixth
if they would have lost that game against Jacksonville.
And because they did not, and because they won
in a swan song to Derrick Henry and Ryan Tannehill,
they missed out on Joe Walt and Malik Nabors.
Which, like I said, I am okay with the J.C. Latham pick.
I'm okay.
But if it doesn't work out,
if he ends up like some similar Alabama offensive lineman recently,
if he's not athletic enough to play left tackle,
if he does get beat inside too much,
if he can't mirror pass rushers, all of that,
if it doesn't work out,
it's just going to be hard to stomach.
Now, it may work out, and's just going to be hard to stomach. Now it may work out and ultimately I
will look like a fool for having so much worry about the Titans winning a football game. That
absolutely could happen and that's what I want to happen. Never mistake it. Never mistake it.
I want the Tennessee Titans to win. I want the Tennessee Titans to win the division, to win the
Super Bowl, to make the playoffs. Like, look behind you.
I have spent thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars in my life as a Tennessee Titans fan on memorabilia, on games, on Sunday ticket to watch them
even before I was getting paid to cover the team.
25 years I have been a fanatic.
I want this team to win.
I want this team to do well. I want J.C. Latham to turn into Laramie Tunsil.
That's what I want.
But, it's hard for me
to look back at that win. That pointless
win and not think about
what the potential was. So ultimately, again, I hope I'm wrong, but,
you know, like I said, pour one out for missing out on Joe All and Malik Nabors,
my top two realistic hype options. But at the end of the day, I like the J.C. Latham pick better than, you know,
a defensive player or Olufashinu or, you know, Fawaga or, you know,
other options that they had.
I was okay with it. I am okay with it.
Now, what do they do, though?
The Titans need defensive line.
The Titans need wide receiver.
And, you know, I'm trying to keep up with the draft right now.
The Colts
took an edge rusher. First defensive player off the board, I think.
But yeah, look,
the Titans desperately needed offensive tackle. The Titans desperately
needed offensive line. The Titans desperately needed offensive line.
We're seeing a run on defensive players starting to happen.
Haven't seen a lot of wide receivers go.
Correct me if I'm wrong, Roma Dunze went.
And I haven't seen,
I haven't seen another wide receiver go since.
I've been doing the show, so if I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
But I haven't seen another wide receiver go. You guys let been doing the show, so if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But I haven't seen another wide receiver go.
You guys let me know in the chat if I'm wrong about that.
So wide receivers are getting pushed down the board.
Yeah, wide receivers are still sitting.
Thank you, Rhett.
Rhett Pigman, thank you.
But yeah, they need to go wide receiver.
They need to go defensive line.
I would like to see the Titans trade back in the second round.
I am going to go live after the first round of the draft ends
to take a look at who's still available
and what the Titans should consider at number 38.
So make sure that you guys tune back in after the draft is over when I go live.
But again, not Joe Alt, not Malik Neighbors, not Roma Dunze,
but I'm okay with the pick of J.C. Latham.
6'5", 340, 35-inch arms, 11-inch hands,
only 21 years old, just turned 21, tons of potential,
has been one of the best players at his level his entire life.
Anchor, grip, power, drive, finish.
Yes, there are some issues about quickness in the pass set.
Yes, there are some issues about getting beat inside
and being able to mirror pass rushers.
Can Bill Callahan clean that up?
