Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans PLAYOFF PUSH in AFC, Wild Card Chances & Assessing Remainder of Schedule

Episode Date: October 7, 2024

The Tennessee Titans come out of the Bye Week with basically no shot to catch the Houston Texans, barring a disaster or injury, but they can look around the rest of the AFC and realize that the playof...fs are not as far-fetched as it may seem. The AFC as a conference has not been overly impressive and the Titans can get right back into the thick of the playoff race with a victory against the Indianapolis Colts this weekend. It doesn't stop there though as the Tennessee Titans need to make sure they are taking advantage of the segments of their schedule where things are winnable. It won't be easy, but the Titans aren't dead yet!!Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitansTicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=ascFollow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitansFollow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPodSubscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videosSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Hillsdale CollegeAll of Hillsdale’s courses are self-paced so that you can start whenever, and tune in wherever. Starting point is 00:00:41 first purchase. On today's show, I'm going to tell you why the Titans will not win the AFC South, but they absolutely can still make the playoffs. We're going to look at the AFC South as a division. We're going to look at the AFC as a conference, and I'm going to tell you what the Titans need to do for the rest of the season coming out of the bye to make the playoffs a possibility.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Before I get into it, I do want to thank you again for making Locked on Titans your first listen each and every day. Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free. You're not going to beat that anywhere else. Make sure that you get subscribed. Stay subscribed. Starting point is 00:01:23 Speaking of every day, shout out to my everydayers out there tuning in Monday through Friday. If you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one. Make sure that you throw a thumbs up on the video, throw a Titan up down in the chat if you're watching on YouTube. But with that being said, let's dive into today's episode again. I do not think the Tennessee Titans can win the AFC South at this point. The AFC South looks like it's going to be a runaway for the Houston Texans. And quite honestly, coming into the season, that was my prediction.
Starting point is 00:01:55 I've said pretty consistently for the Titans for a few months now that they're not going to beat the Houston Texans. And nobody is going to beat the Houston Texans for the AFC South crown. They're just a much more talented roster than all of the other teams in the AFC and they have far and away the best quarterback in the AFC South. Like it's just not even close. CJ Stroud is way better than Anthony Richardson or Trevor Lawrence or Will Levis or Mason Rudolph or Joe Flacco. It doesn't matter. C.J. Stroud is going to be a top five quarterback for the foreseeable future, and none of those guys are going to get anywhere close to that.
Starting point is 00:02:35 So that's basically how things have played out, and Houston has not even played that well. If we're honest, they've had penalties. Their offense has been inconsistent at times, but they sit at 4-1 right now through five weeks, and you look at their schedule coming up. I mean, they play the Patriots this week. That is an absolute win. Then they play the Packers. That could be a close game, but I think the Texans win that game. They play the Colts. They already beat the Colts once,
Starting point is 00:03:04 and that was in Indy. They play the Colts. They already beat the Colts once, and that was in Indy. They play the Jets. The Jets are not that good of a football team. Then the Lions. That'll be tight. Then they play the Cowboys. I don't think the Cowboys are anything special this year. Then they have their first game against the Titans,
Starting point is 00:03:18 which at this point, how could we say that the Titans would beat the Texans? Then they play the Jags again. They play the Dolphins. Then they play the Jags again. They play the Dolphins. Then they play the Chiefs and the Ravens. Those could be losses for sure. And then they finish the season against the Titans once again. And even if the Titans get one of those games,
Starting point is 00:03:35 the Texans are still looking at 12, 13 wins this year. And the Titans are simply not catching up to them there. And you look at the other teams in the AFC South. Indy drops to 2-3, losing to Jacksonville. Jackson you look at the other teams in the AFC South, Indy drops to two and three, losing to Jacksonville. Jacksonville moves to one and four. They finally get a win. But the reality is the reality in front of us here. Nobody is going to catch the Houston Texans unless there is a devastating injury. And quite honestly, I think the Texans with a Davis Mills or a Case Keenum, you know, whatever happened to be whatever they wanted
Starting point is 00:04:05 to do at quarterback if they suffered an injury to CJ Stroud. I still think that the coaching and the roster is good enough to carry them through. So I know that may be disappointing, but I would just be curious to see if any Titans fans out there actually do think the Tennessee Titans will come back in the AFC South. But what's more important here is the rest of the AFC South. So the Titans sit at one, and for the record, the Titans have a 4.2% chance of winning the AFC South at this point. Look at the rest of the teams, though. Look at Indianapolis, two and three.
Starting point is 00:04:42 They're better with Joe Flacco, and they're going to put Anthony Richardson back in as soon as he's healthy. That's what they're going to do because they're going to prioritize it. It's the same thing with Will Levis. The Titans are probably better with Mason Rudolph. They'll probably win more games with Mason Rudolph. The Colts would absolutely win more football games with Joe Flacco at quarterback. But is that what's best for the team long term?
Starting point is 00:05:04 Where are you really going with Joe Flacco at quarterback? Where are you really going with Mason Rudolph at quarterback? The answer is nowhere. All right? You maybe sneak into the playoffs, and then what? Do we remember Joe Flacco last year, you know, or with the Cleveland Browns, how they got drubbed by Houston in the first round of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:05:26 Do we remember the Colts last year with Garner Minshew when they were one game away from making it to the playoffs but ultimately did not make it because of a bad throw by Garner Minshew that was behind us running back on fourth down? Like, you have to be realistic about these low-ceiling quarterbacks. So, the Colts are going to put Anthony Richardson back in and he is not as good as Joe Flacco. The Jags, they got their first win,
Starting point is 00:05:51 but they tried to give it away. Did anybody see that game? They were up by 14 points, 34 to 20 in the fourth quarter and the Colts came all the way back and the Jags had to make a last second field goal to win the game. The Jacksonville Jaguars are not a good football team. Jags had to make a last-second field goal to win the game.
Starting point is 00:06:04 The Jacksonville Jaguars are not a good football team. Like, so the Titans still have all six of their division games left, and maybe they can beat Houston one time. Maybe that last game of the season. This is what I said when I did my record prediction before the year. I said the last game of the season, week 18, at home for the Titans against the Texans. The Texans will probably be resting their starters because they're already in the playoffs and secure in their spot. So the Titans have a chance here to win five of their division games. And if they can beat the Jags twice, they can beat the Colts twice, they can
Starting point is 00:06:42 beat the Texans once in a game that, again, I think hopefully the Titans get a chance to play the Texans when they're not trying to win in week 18. Whatever helps the Titans, I don't care, you know. Well, that's five wins to go with the win they already have. That's six wins. And I think that based on what we're seeing in the AFC right now, nine wins. I didn't think before the year that nine wins would get you into the playoffs. But the way the AFC looks right now, I think there is absolutely a chance that nine wins could get you into the playoffs. Okay? Now,
Starting point is 00:07:18 the Titans only right now have like an 11% chance based on historical data to make the wild card, to get a wild card spot. I understand that it is a battle uphill for certain, but there is a real path because of the rest of the division not being that great outside of Houston that the Titans absolutely could make that push. And speaking of outside of the division, the AFC, like I said, not looking all that great. So I'm going to tell you exactly why I believe the Titans can still get a wild card berth
Starting point is 00:07:53 after what we saw in week five in the NFL. First, I want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook. Hey, Titans fans. Yes, I'm talking to you, Titans fans. You can start the second quarter of the season with a big return on FanDuel Sportsbook, America's number one sportsbook. And right now, you'll get started with $200 in bonus bets. That's $200 in bonus bets. That's $200 in bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first $5 bet. Speaking of a $5 bet, the Titans are one and a half point underdogs at home against the Colts this weekend. If you don't like that, the over under right now is 42 and a half. I am taking the over in this one.
Starting point is 00:09:03 I think there will be more points than 42 and a half. I am taking the over in this one. I think there will be more points than 42 and a half. Either way, if you're feeling like me or if you want to fade me as well, make sure you do it at fanduel.com. Also want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by Hillsdale College. History, economics, the great works of literature, the meaning of the U.S. Constitution.

Starting point is 00:10:25 Titans fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast, talking about where the Tennessee Titans sit within the AFC South, where the Titans sit within the AFC is what we're going to talk about right now, and why I still believe that a wild card berth is possible for the Tennessee Titans. Now, it's not likely at this point in time, but based on what we're seeing in the rest of the conference, I think it's absolutely possible at the end of the show, I'm going to look at the rest
Starting point is 00:11:09 of the Titans schedule and tell you exactly what they need to do to make the wild card spot a possibility. Before I get into it, thanks again for making Locked on Titans your first listen. For your second listen, check out Locked on NFL. I am the lead host of Locked On NFL in the AM.
Starting point is 00:11:27 You get your Titans news here with me for free on Locked On Titans. Get your NFL news with me for free at Locked On NFL. It's part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team, every day. But with that being said, again, to me, the Titans are absolutely still in the wild card hunt. Now, I know that in previous episodes, look, I'm just going to be out front and honest. I'm just going to be open with you guys. Let's all just have a little kumbaya, a little trust tree conversation. I get pissed when the Titans lose.
Starting point is 00:12:04 I'm just like you at the end of the day. My emotional state is tied irresponsibly to the Tennessee Titans. It is the truth. So when the Titans lose these heartbreaking games, sometimes, you know, I'm like you guys. I go a little overboard with things. So in previous episodes, I guarantee you could find a clip of me saying
Starting point is 00:12:27 that the Titans will not make the playoffs this year, that it's over, they have no chance, blah, blah, blah. I'm sure that is how I felt after some of these losses. But reality is different than how we feel immediately after the game ends. It's just the truth. And it always is. Once the emotions calm down and you look at things a little more logically,
Starting point is 00:12:46 things are always not as bad as they seem. And look at the AFC right now. So the Kansas City Chiefs are 4-0 and they're going to play on Monday Night Football. Some of you may be listening to this after Monday Night Football on Tuesday morning. They take on the Saints, whatever, even if they're 4-1.
Starting point is 00:13:04 The Chiefs are going to win their division. Let's not play these games. The Baltimore Ravens are three and two, but boy, do they look good. So I think that the Chiefs and the Ravens are going to win their division. The Texans, I already talked about that, and I think they're going to win their division. The Bills are sitting at three and two, but do I think the Jets or the Dolphins or the Patriots are going to take that division away from the Bills? Not likely. Maybe, but not likely.
Starting point is 00:13:34 Again, I don't have a crystal ball here, folks. I can't know for certain, but we just got to talk about logic for a second. So, if the division spots are generally, you know, we think, sewed up here, move to the wild card. The Pittsburgh Steelers, 3-2. Started out 3-0, but dropped two games in a row. Justin Fields really coming back down to earth.
Starting point is 00:13:57 The defense can only do so much. The defense hasn't looked that great the last two weeks either against the Colts or against the Cowboys last night. They got some red zone turnovers, but the Cowboys were going up and down the field on the Steelers' defense. So the Steelers are a wildcard team at 3-2. The Broncos, oh my God, Broncos fans hate me so much,
Starting point is 00:14:16 and I don't care. The Broncos are frauds. They are frauds. They have a really good defense. They've been playing good special teams as well, but I'm not buying into that offense for one second. I'm absolutely not. And then the Chargers are the seventh seed right now,
Starting point is 00:14:33 the third wildcard team, and they only have two wins. That's one more than the Titans. And they play against the Chiefs twice a year. So, to me, if the Chargers are the seventh seed right now with two wins, why can't the Titans get a wildcard spot? They're only 1-3. They're not 1-4.
Starting point is 00:14:54 They're one game behind. They're one game out of a wildcard spot. And then go after that. The Jets are 2-3. Aaron Rodgers has already beat the crap. The Jets ain't that good. They have terrible coaching, man. The Jets have terrible coaching. Like, it still makes me mad that the Titans lost that game. Jeffrey Simmons giving up the seven points with the penalty. Will Levis with the underhanded toss in the red zone. Like, that's ten points
Starting point is 00:15:24 right there that the Titans just anyways, got to let those things go from three weeks ago. But I'm just saying the jets are not that good of a football team. Like they're not significantly better than the Tennessee Titans, even though they beat the Titans, the Raiders are two and three. They feel worse. And they're putting Aiden O'Connell in over Garner Minshew. Like what are we doing there? The Raiders are not, they're putting Aiden O'Connell in over Garner Minshew like what are we doing
Starting point is 00:15:46 there the Raiders are not they're going to trade Devontae Adams that's not a good situation the Dolphins are 2-3 Titans already beat the Dolphins and the Dolphins beat the Patriots like do we really think that the Dolphins
Starting point is 00:16:02 are going to be a playoff team I don't I know 2 is going to be a playoff team? I don't. I know two is going to come back at some point probably, but come on now. Come on. And then after that, the Colts are two and three. And if the Titans beat the Colts this weekend, the Colts drop to two and four,
Starting point is 00:16:19 the Titans are two and three, and they're ahead of the Colts already. The Titans will be in second place in the AOC South if they win this weekend. So, I know that it sounds crazy. I know that it's not likely at all. I'm not saying that it's going to happen or that it's likely to happen. But look around the conference. And then after that, you have the Jags. You have the Bengals.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Who's the one team that I'm leaving out that is also not good? The Browns. Like, why not? I don't think that the Steelers, the Broncos, the Chargers, the Jets, the Raiders, the Dolphins, the Colts, are those seven teams significantly better than the Tennessee Titans? I don't think so. I think they're all about the same.
Starting point is 00:17:07 And the Titans have just, imagine, the Titans were up 17-0 on the Bears. If they just win that game, and they're 2-2 right now, the Titans are the seventh seed. And then how do we feel? Oh yeah, it's been ugly. Oh yeah, Levis is bottom five in EPA. Levis is one of the top ten worst quarterbacks in the last 24 years in EPA per play. All this
Starting point is 00:17:35 they haven't got any turnovers. They're turning over the ball. I mean, if the Titans just don't have a punt block in week one, they are in the wild card spot right now. So, I'm just saying. Again, it's not likely. It's not the favorite outcome. It's not the betting favorite on FanDuel. But it is absolutely possible that the Titans can make the wild card
Starting point is 00:17:59 and do it with nine wins. I really think that. And how do they get the next eight wins? We're going to talk about that right now as we go over the rest of the Tennessee Titans schedule in 2024. First, I want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by GameTime. GameTime is the best place to buy tickets, period.
Starting point is 00:18:25 The question is, why, Tyler? Why is it the best place to buy tickets, period. The question is, why, Tyler? Why is it the best place to buy tickets? Because they have the best features in the ticket buying industry. And they just got a brand new feature that makes GameTime even better. It's called GameTime Picks. It makes getting tickets for your favorite live events even easier. Instead of going through thousands of tickets, GameTime Picks filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats so you don't have to waste a bunch of time.
Starting point is 00:18:49 To go along with that, of course, they have a panoramic view from your seat so you know what you're going to be looking at when you sit down. And if you toggle on the feature in the app, you're going to get all-in pricing. So the price that you see for your tickets is actually what you're going to pay for your tickets. Starting point is 00:19:17 Terms apply. Again, create an account. Redeem the code L-O-C-K-E-D-O-N-N-F-L for $20 off. Download gameTime today. What time is it? GameTime. Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. Look, we're coming out of the bye week.
Starting point is 00:19:49 I'm taking a look at where the Titans sit within the AFC South. We talked about that day and when in the AFC South, folks. You got to let that go. But the wild card spot, based on what we've seen from the AFC so far, is absolutely still a possibility for the Tennessee Titans. Now, what do they got to do to do that? What has to happen for the Titans to be able to get that wildcard spot, one of these wildcard spots in the AFC?
Starting point is 00:20:12 We're going to go through the entire schedule. Before I do, thanks again for making Locked on Titans your first listen each and every day. For your second listen, check out Locked on NFL. And I'm going to have a Tavondre Sweat film breakdown video on the Tic Tac Titans YouTube channel up at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The link to that film channel is down in the description of this episode. You listen to me go through all the talking points with the Titans.
Starting point is 00:20:37 You got to check out the film, especially with what Tavondre Sweat is doing and just proving me absolutely wrong on every account. And I got a special video coming for you guys later this week to talk about that as well, but not going to spoil anything for the moment. But let's talk about the rest of the Titans schedule and how they can get one of these wildcard spots. So by my count, the Titans need to win eight more games. If they go nine and eight, I think they have a great chance
Starting point is 00:21:03 to make the playoffs. All right, nine and eight needs I think they have a great chance to make the playoffs. All right. Nine and eight needs to be the goal. And coincidentally, that was my record prediction for the Titans coming into the year. Now, I don't feel great about that right now, to be honest with you. I think seven and 10 is more likely for the Titans, maybe even six and 11 at this point. But hey, they can turn things around. We knew that it would be a slow start for the Titans. We knew with a new offense, new pieces, offensive line being young, it would take time to gel. I think the defense has maybe overperformed a little bit
Starting point is 00:21:32 in statistical categories, but if they're even a little bit worse on defense but force more turnovers, everything will even itself out. And it starts this week against the Colts. Winning your division games is going to be critical for the Titans. Everything will even itself out. And it starts this week against the Colts. Winning your division games is going to be critical for the Titans. If the Titans can, again, get five division wins, four division wins,
Starting point is 00:21:54 I mean, that's halfway there. That's halfway there to the nine that they need to get with the one that they already have. So you got to be Indianapolis at home this weekend. You absolutely have to win that game no matter what. Coming off of a bye at home division game, you have to win that football game. You have to. Period. If the Titans don't win that game, to me, all this stuff is kind of out of the realm of possibility now. You cannot drop
Starting point is 00:22:24 to one and four. That would be doomsday. With a division loss and another home loss too. I mean, that's three home losses in six weeks. Five games. You can't recover from that, really. Because then the Titans go on the road and play the Buffalo Bills. And then they play the Detroit Lions. Both on the road and play the Buffalo Bills. And then they play the Detroit Lions.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Both on the road. The reality here is they got to beat the Colts. That is a must win. But if they can take one of those games from the Lions or the Bills, again, not likely, but to me, that's what it'll take. And I think, I think the best bet is the Bills.
Starting point is 00:23:05 The Bills are a good football team, but they're not as great as they looked at the beginning of the year. They've really come back down to earth. Josh Allen was 9-for-30 against Houston. They've had some injuries on defense. The passing game is just not where it needs to be. And if the Titans can sew up the running game from James Cook, the Bills really stayed in the game with the Texans because of their running
Starting point is 00:23:28 game. James Cook had a great game. He went for 80 yards, 82 yards I think it was. If you could stop the Bills rushing attack, the Titans might have a chance to win that game. And we all know that the Titans have a tendency to play well over the last few years against the Bills. I know they got blown out in primetime in the latest matchup, but they've generally played the Bills tight.
Starting point is 00:23:53 I know it's a whole new scheme, whole new coaching staff, all that, but I'm just saying. You go back to, you know, Music City Miracle. Like, there's just something about the Titans and the Bills where the Titans always have a chance. So if the Titans can beat the Colts this week and then get one of Bill's Lions on the road, they're going to be three and four,
Starting point is 00:24:13 and they're going to be cooking. All right? And there's going to be a lot of momentum. All right? And then the next three weeks, you have the Patriots at home win, and then you go on the road against the Chargers. Tough to go on the road there across the country,
Starting point is 00:24:28 but the Chargers aren't unstoppable. They have just run the ball down everybody's throat, and they've barely been able to pass this year, and the Titans are good against the run. So I think that gives them a good chance. Then they play Minnesota at home, and look, Minnesota's 5-0. I think Minnesota's going to be a good football team. But Minnesota's gotten a big lead in every game that they've had and their pass rush has been able to pin their ears back with the blitzing from
Starting point is 00:24:55 Brian Flores. They've been able to be very conservative on offense. They've turned over the ball and still been able to pull it out because they're getting big leads early in games. Look what happened in London just this week. They got a big lead, and then the Jets came all the way back. And against the Packers the week before, they got a big lead, and the Packers came all the way back. If you don't let Minnesota get out to a big lead, and if you were to take a lead on Minnesota early in a game, I think that would make Minnesota look way different than the 5-0 record that they are right now. But the Titans just need to get two of those games. Patriots, Chargers, Vikings. You're going to lose to the Vikings at home.
Starting point is 00:25:38 Fine. It's an NFC team. Doesn't hurt your conference record. Beat the Pats. Beat the Chargers. Two AFC wins. That's huge. And now you're 5-5. And if the Titans are 5-5 a couple of weeks from now, we're going to feel a lot different about this team. And then the next set of three games is tougher than you thought it might be with Washington. But you're at Houston.
Starting point is 00:26:03 Probably going to lose that one realistically in week 12. And then you're at Washington, which is going to be a tough game, but Washington's defense isn't that great.
