Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast. I am your host, Tyler Rowland. Titans fans, we now know the initial 53-man roster for the Tennessee Titans. We got all of the cuts from Tuesday and Monday. I'm going to be breaking down the Titans 53-man roster, who was cut, the biggest surprises, things that I see that are pretty interesting at certain position groups. So we'll go position by position through the entire roster, talking about who got kept, who got cut.
Starting point is 00:00:33 And then finally, we'll talk about some guys who got cut by other teams who could be options for the Titans on the waiver. So breaking down the Titans' first 53-man roster of the 2022 season on today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. Let's get it! You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Titans fans, it is roster cut down day and we finally know the Titans initial 53-man roster heading into the 2022 season.
Starting point is 00:01:34 I'm breaking down who was kept, breaking down who was cut, talking surprises, talking about people are going to be available on the waiver for the Titans as well. Starting point is 00:02:34 here. What a day. I mean, obviously, the biggest news of them all, Logan Woodside! See ya, buddy! Peace out. Sayonara. Have a good one. Just kidding kidding we're not gonna start there but obviously as you guys know a little bit of an inside joke that I've kept going for quite some years now but what I want to do is I just want to go position by position through the entire team
Starting point is 00:02:57 talk about all the interesting things that popped up cuts and kept. Let's start with quarterback. And obviously the big news here, Malik Willis is your backup quarterback. Boom. Take that haters. All of you guys who got in my comments early, Logan Woodside's the better quarterback. I said it all along. Malik Willis could not know a single play in the playbook and he would give the Titans a better chance to win a football game than Logan Woodside. Logan Woodside wasn't a top 10 quarterback in the AAF. And there were only 8 teams. Okay? So, Logan Woodside released from the team. We finally can quit pretending that he's a true backup quarterback. And it's nice to say, the Tennessee
Starting point is 00:03:43 Titans do not have the worst backup quarterback in the NFL anymore. It feels good to say. So there was a ton of conversation about keeping three quarterbacks. I'm glad that we put all of that in the past. See ya. Now, I'm expecting, and for the record, I'm okay with Logan Woodside being on practice squad. Sure, bring old Woody back to the practice squad.
Starting point is 00:04:08 No problems there as long as he's not taking up a roster spot for another deserving candidate. So come on back, Logan, to the practice squad. But if the Titans want to upgrade on Logan Woodside and get a better practice squad quarterback, well, by God, I'm all for that too. Running back, we got one of the biggest surprises of the day at running back when undrafted free agent from Sacred Heart, Julius Chestnut,
Starting point is 00:04:33 made the 53-man roster. Wow. Wow. What a shocker. Quite honestly, I thought Chestnut ran well during the preseason but here's the reality the Titans drafted a rookie running back in Hassan Haskins and Haskins is a better special teams player Haskins is a better pass blocker Haskins is a better pass catcher so he had all three of those on Chestnut but Chestnut was a better pure runner no way around it and Chestnut
Starting point is 00:05:02 apparently impressed incredibly in training camp. So okay, the young guy earned it. He deserved it. But that leaves the Titans with five running backs, or five backs, let's say. You have Henry, Hilliard, and Haskins, Chestnut, and then Torrey Carter as the fullback. And I gotta tell you guys, as we're gonna talk about
Starting point is 00:05:19 at the end of the show, I'm expecting, this isn't the final 53-man roster before the Giants game. This is the first 53-man roster. The Titans are going to be picking players up on waivers, okay? They're going to be picking up guys who are cut by other teams who pass through waivers. And I gotta say that if the Titans pick up somebody at another position, like wide receiver, tight end, linebacker. Chestnut may be one of those guys who gets released to make way for that, but he earned it for now. So let's celebrate Julius Chestnut for right now, although I think his hold on that roster spot may not be as long as you guys may
Starting point is 00:05:58 want initially. So five backs, that's something that I've talked about quite a bit. I expected them to keep five backs. Didn't want them to keep three quarterbacks, so they could keep five backs. Now Trenton Cannon was cut. We do got to mention that. Cannon just was hurt too much, and with Kyle Phillips, Dontrell Hilliard, and Racey McMath emerging as a kickoff return option, Cannon just simply didn't have any reason to be on the roster. He's not a better running back than any of those backs.
Starting point is 00:06:28 He's not a better third down back than Dontrell Hilliard. And if he's not going to offer value as a kickoff returner, it just doesn't make sense to keep him around. So moving forward, though, we'll look at wide receiver next. No shock to me here. The five wide receivers that the Titans kept were the five wide receivers I had been expecting. You have Woods, NWI, Burks, Phillips, and Racey McMath.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Now again, this is a spot I could see the Titans adding a sixth wide receiver. Quite frankly, I think they need to. They need to add a sixth wide receiver off one of these waivers. And we'll talk about the options at the end of the show. But five wide receivers for now. That means that Des Fitzpatrick, one of the worst draft picks in John Robinson's history, Mason Kinsey, a fan favorite,
Starting point is 00:07:15 Reggie Roberson and Cody Hollister were cut at the wide receiver position. I would like to see two or three of those guys brought back as long as their name isn't Des Fitzpatrick. He's not an NFL player. Roster. Practice squad. Doesn't matter. Bring Kinsey.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Roberson. Hollister. To the practice squad. Please. At tight end. Austin Hooper. Chigga Conquo. Jeff Slame.
Starting point is 00:07:37 I think the Titans need a fourth tight end. We'll talk about that again as we look at some waiver claim options for the Titans. But they only kept three. Which means Hudson. Odukoye, and Wells were all let go. Hudson was an injury designation. Odukoye is going to be back on the practice squad because he's an international pathway player. So the Titans are going to get a 17th player on the practice squad because they're keeping Thomas Odukoye, and he doesn't have to go through waivers.
Starting point is 00:08:04 He goes directly to the Titans practice squad. Again, he's an international pathway program player. So the NFL makes special allowances if you're keeping one of those players within your program. So from those four positions, I could see the Titans cutting Chestnut to make way for a sixth wide receiver or a fourth tight end. But for right now, that's the skill
Starting point is 00:08:25 position, guys, on offense. We're going to move forward here. We're going to dive into the trenches on offense and defense as we continue breaking down the roster. And again, after we go through the entire roster, all the keeps and all the cuts, I am going to break down waiver wire options that the Titans will have to add to their roster following the cuts around the NFL. Before we get into that, though, I do want to tell you guys a little bit more about our title sponsor, LinkedIn. Basically, you pick two to five player projections. You determine whether it's going to be more or less, and you have a chance to win 10 times your entry. Starting point is 00:11:20 100% deposit match up to $100 at prizepix.com or download the PrizePix app. Titans fans, let's continue breaking down the roster. It is cut down day. We've talked about quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and tight end on offense. We're going to continue going position by position, talking about the keeps, talking about the cuts.
Starting point is 00:11:59 And at the end of the show, I'm going to be breaking down the waiver options for the Titans as nearly 1,000 players were cut on Monday or Tuesday. I'm going to be breaking down the waiver options for the Titans as, you know, nearly a thousand players were cut on Monday or Tuesday. So let's continue getting into the roster before we do want to thank you guys again for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen every day. If this is your first ever listen, or even if you just haven't subscribed yet, make sure you do Monday through Friday, free Tennessee Titans content on all platforms all year round. It's your team every day here at the Locked On Titans podcast.
Starting point is 00:12:29 But talking about offensive tackle, you have Taylor LeJuan, Nicholas Petit-Ferrer, and then you have Dennis Daly, who was traded for last night after I recorded the show. The Titans gave up a fifth round draft pick in that trade. They got back a seventhround draft pick in that trade. They got back a seventh-round draft pick in 2024. And based on some things that happened on Tuesday, I wish they didn't do that. I wish they didn't make the trade for Dennis Daly. But either way, and we'll talk about that with the waiver options,
Starting point is 00:12:57 the Undertaker should have been in that spot, man. But we'll get into that at the end of this show. LeJuan, NPF, and Dennis Daly at offensive tackle for the Titans. Of course, you have a guy like Jamarco Jones and Dylan Radins, who also give you some offensive tackle versatility if you need it. But Christian DeLauro was cut. Jalen McKenzie was cut. Andrew Ripsitch was cut at offensive tackle. I'd like to get Christian DeLauro back on the practice squad personally. Do want to make one note, tight end.
Starting point is 00:13:29 The Titans only kept three, but as I've talked about, Torrey Carter has spent some time with the fullbacks during training camp. So it's not outrageous to think that the Titans see Torrey Carter, their fullback, as the fourth tight end. But I'd still like to have a pure tight end there, if it's me personally with how I see the Titans offense. So, you have LeJuan, NPF, and Daly as the offensive tackles on the roster. At the interior offensive line, you have Ben Jones, Nate Davis, Aaron Brewer,
Starting point is 00:13:56 the starters. Then you have Dylan Radins, Corey Levin, and Jamarco Jones. That's nine offensive linemen. I've been saying I want the Titans to carry nine. I want the Titans to carry nine offensive linemen. Now, this may give you a little concern about Nate Davis or Jamarco Jones. Maybe one of those guys ends up on the IR to start the season. That could happen.
Starting point is 00:14:21 I'm hoping that's not the case. Mike Rabel said he's hopeful to get those guys back in practice this week. But either way, on the cut side of things, that means Jordan Roos, who I thought had a chance to stick on the roster, and as I mentioned on Twitter last night after the trade, Dennis Daly took Jordan Roos' spot. Now, I'd like to see Jordan Roos back on the practice squad for what he did. Yeah, Torrey Carter
Starting point is 00:14:45 is our starting fullback. Yeah. No, he's a very good fullback, in my opinion. I'm a big Torrey Carter fan. But continuing forward here, you have Ruse cut, Xavier Newman cut, who I think should be on the practice squad as a young guy worth
Starting point is 00:15:01 developing. Hayden Howerton, another guy I'd like to have on the practice squad. And then finally, Willie Wright, who, okay, you know, see ya, whatever. Anyways, going past the offensive line here, I didn't think there was anything too crazy on the offensive line, anything that stood out too much. On the interior defensive line, though, seven players. I struggled with this.
Starting point is 00:15:27 I thought the Titans could consider keeping seven. When I did my projections, I ultimately settled on six, but the Titans wanted seven interior defensive linemen, and I got to tell you guys, that may not be good news. So you have Simmons and Autry, T. Air Tart, Naquan Jones,
Starting point is 00:15:47 and then you have Demarcus Walker, Deshaun Hand, and Kevin Strong. See, I thought it would be one of Hand or Kevin Strong, but both of them. And why this could be bad news for the Titans. Keeping seven defensive linemen like that leads me to believe maybe Danico Autry, yeah, I see it in the comments immediately,
Starting point is 00:16:11 maybe Danico Autry may not be ready for the regular season. He may be a guy who goes on IR for four games to start the year. And it may make more, so here's the IR situation, guys. You have to make the 53-man roster and then be placed on IR for you to be able to come back that season. If you're placed on injured reserve in the preseason or before the initial 53-man roster is set,
Starting point is 00:16:36 you're out for the year. So that's why maybe some of these guys will be going on IR tomorrow or Thursday, you know, or Wednesday or Thursday because they need to be on the 53-man roster first or they're not eligible to come back. So that's, I think that we may see some of these guys cut for other players that teams pick up
Starting point is 00:16:58 who were cut by other teams, who the Titans want to get, or we may see guys go on IR like, you know, Nate Davis, Danico Autry, Elijah Molden, and that'll open up roster spots for them to bring on some guys from other cuts. So just keep that in mind that this is fluid, okay? The roster isn't set for the Giants game quite yet. But on the defensive line, the cuts, we had Larell Murchison, Jaden Peavy, and Sam Okwe and Nonu. And again, if you guys have been listening to the show,
Starting point is 00:17:26 I've been telling you since the all season started that I think Larell Murchison will be cut. Some of you guys said, oh, that's not a surprise cut. Okay, maybe it's not. But either way, Murch is cut. And he just got outplayed by hand, by Strong, by Jones. He's been passed up by other guys since he was drafted. Boy, that 2020 draft from J-Rob was just absolutely despicable.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Cole McDonald, Chris Jackson, Larell Murchison, freaking Isaiah Wilson, Darrington Evans, Dez Fitzpatrick no Des was 2021 I'll leave him out of that but Brady Breeze even I think was in the 2020 group right
Starting point is 00:18:15 Brady Breeze I mean literally there's like two people left now the Titans got some good undrafted free agents in 2020 so I'll give the pass there, but rough draft class for John Robinson in 2020. That was pretty bad. So that's the interior defensive line.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Again, only real, not even shocker, but interesting thing is Lerone Murchison getting cut, but I like having seven interior defensive linemen. Yeah, Breeze was 2021. Right, right, right, right. So still a rough 20-20 for John Robinson. My Lord. My Lord, was it bad.
Starting point is 00:18:52 But he rebounded, okay? He rebounded. Had some good ones in there. But either way, we've talked the skill positions on offense. We've talked the trenches on offense and defense. Now I want to talk about the back half of the defense and the special teams. And we're going to talk about some waiver options for the Titans that were cut by other teams on Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:19:12 Before we get into that, though, I do want to tell you guys a little bit about Dave. Starting point is 00:20:15 Future you. Will thank you. Titans fans, let's cap off today's show. We're going to continue going through the roster cuts, what the Titans 53-man roster looks like right now, how it can change. And speaking of how it can change, I'm going to dive in some waiver wire options at the end of the show that were
Starting point is 00:20:48 cut on Tuesday by their teams that could make sense for the Titans. Before we get into that, I want to thank you guys again for making the Locked On Titans podcast your first listen every day. As for your second listen, it's fantasy draft season. Check out the Locked On Fantasy Football podcast free and available on all platforms.
Starting point is 00:21:04 But continuing through the roster here, we're going to start with the linebacker spot. Only four linebackers for the Titans. David Long, Zach Cunningham, Dylan Cole, and Chance Campbell. Monty Rice is still on PUP, so that's not going to count towards a roster spot. When we look at the cuts, Joe Jones cut. I guess it's a bit of a surprise just because he had that effort play, but let's be honest. Joe Jones is's a bit of a surprise just because he had that effort play, but let's be honest. Joe Jones is purely a special teams player,
Starting point is 00:21:28 and the Titans didn't see the value there, especially with Monty Rice out. When you have a guy like Dylan Cole, who is pretty much purely a special teams player. Now, the shocker here is that the Titans didn't keep five, and they let go of Dr. Gibby, Jack Gibbons, as well. Hopefully, they can get him back on the practice squad, but I liked Gibbons' size, speed.
Starting point is 00:21:46 He was 6'3", 240. Could run a little bit. Could cover a little bit. I am a little bit surprised that they decided to keep only four inside linebackers and let go of Gibbons. So hopefully they can get him back on the practice squad. An outside linebacker! Bud Dupree, Harold Landry, Rashad Weaver, and Ola Adani.
Starting point is 00:22:05 Who's missing? David Anini. Why? Why? Why? This team struggled for years and years and years to get quality outside linebacker depth. They finally find a guy in David Anini as an undrafted free agent
Starting point is 00:22:21 who has three sacks, two forced fumbles, a couple pass deflections, consistently flashed and made plays in the preseason, and they let him go? Anini's not going to get back to the practice squad. Another team in the NFL is going to see all that and say, we got to get this guy in here. Like, I know you guys may not want to hear it, but why are they keeping Trey Avery or Julius Chestnut over David Anini?
Starting point is 00:22:49 Why do we need six cornerbacks and five running backs and only four outside linebackers and let a guy like that go? Man, David Anini was my guy. And he proved it. And he proved it. And he proved it. And he made flash plays, man. I just don't understand. I simply don't understand.
Starting point is 00:23:12 I don't. Anyways, we're getting breaking news. Has to be discussed. Yes. Has to be discussed. Racey McMath has a hip injury. Expected to be placed on injured reserve on Wednesday. So basically the Titans are going to have four wide receivers on the roster and this is going to get into my waiver wire options.
Starting point is 00:23:44 Oh, how did they let David and Nene go? Sucks, man. This sucks. Whatever. Anyways, moving forward, we got to talk about cornerback. The Titans kept Fulton, Farley, Roger McCreary, Elijah Molden, Ugo Amadi,
Starting point is 00:24:01 and Trey Avery, the undrafted free agent cornerback, Trey Avery, who I thought played pretty well during the preseason, but I have to tell you, I am surprised that he got the roster spot over Greg Maben or over a different position like David Anini. Something like that. But good for
Starting point is 00:24:18 Trey Avery. Again, as I said earlier in the show, some of these guys are placeholders, guys. Some of these guys are placeholders, guys. Some of these guys are on the roster so the Titans have 53, and they're going to be cut for other guys who they pick up off waivers. Trace Willing, Chris Jackson, cut. Finally, Chris Jackson's not any good. Get him on the practice squad, but he shouldn't be a rostered player in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:24:44 Greg Maben, who really struggled in the last preseason game, they let him go as well. So they needed another outside cornerback. They needed another outside cornerback, and they decided to stick with Trey Avery. But again, don't get too attached to that. At safety, Kevin Byard, Amani Hooker, Josh Kalou, Lonnie Johnson, my boy Lonnie,
Starting point is 00:25:05 and then A.J. Moore. The big surprise here is they cut former Tennessee Vol Theo Jackson. Look, I said this when there were reports that Theo Jackson was being used as a nickel. I told you guys what's happening is he's not playing well enough at safety, and they got to try him out somewhere else to see if he's worth a roster spot. And he wasn't. Look, Brady Brees was cut by the Titans after being a sixth round safety
Starting point is 00:25:32 and didn't make the initial team. So I don't think we should, I don't think we should be, I don't think we should be surprised. Besides that, Lonnie Johnson. So Kalou and A.J. Moore are both special teams level players. Lonnie Johnson is the Dane Cruikshank replacement,
Starting point is 00:26:00 which is what I said when Kansas City released him. I said the Titans should claim him on waivers because he can be the new Dane Crookshank. And here we are, folks. And here we are. We're there. We made it. Again, though, safety, AJ Moore, Josh Kalu, these could be guys that are placeholders for people who are cut and added
Starting point is 00:26:17 from other teams. But Theo Jackson, Adrian Colbert, and Tyree Gillespie cut at special teams. We have Stonehouse. We have Stonehouse. We have Morgan Cox. We have Randy Bullock. No surprises there. We talked about Brett Kern all day yesterday. I'm going to get into the waiver wire stuff. So, now that
Starting point is 00:26:34 Ray C. McMath is out, there's a clear hole for the Titans at wide receiver. There were some guys worth claiming that were cut. Number one at the top of my list, Tyler Johnson from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tampa Bay had just a bevy of wide receivers that were worth rostering. Think about their top four.
Starting point is 00:26:56 Godwin, Evans, Russell Gage, and Julio. Then they had Scotty Miller. They had Jalen Durden. They had Tyler. I mean, they just can't keep all those guys. And I talked about this a couple of weeks ago. I said, guys, there are other teams out there that have a lot more talent at certain positions than the Titans.
Starting point is 00:27:15 The Titans have one of the worst wide receiver groups in the NFL. So it only makes sense that other teams that are loaded with talent at those positions are teams that the Titans would target to take somebody from. Tyler Johnson makes a ton of sense. Preston Williams was cut by the Dolphins. He could make a lot of sense as well. So those are the two guys who I'm looking at. I'm looking at Tyler Johnson and Preston Williams.
Starting point is 00:27:40 I think they make the most sense. And I see people saying Cole Beasley. I see people saying Will Fuller. Guys, those people would be picked up if they were worth it. And Cole Beasley is double down on Kyle Phillips. I'd rather have Kyle Phillips. So if the Titans go out and get somebody, I want somebody who could play outside receiver with some speed and some size.
Starting point is 00:28:00 Because that's what the Titans are losing with Rayshia McMahon. NWI, big physical receiver, not enough speed. Robert Woods, not big, not fast, just a crafty, smart veteran who gets open. Traylon Burks, he is more the Titans gadget player right now. And then Kyle Phillips is the pure slot. So if Rayce McMath, who's 6'3", with a 4'4", 40, who can get downfield as the deep threat,
Starting point is 00:28:25 is out with a hip injury and going on IR and missing the first four weeks of the year, the Titans need somebody with that skill set. So while I would love to see it be Will Fuller, Robert Woods is fast. Robert Woods is not fast. Robert Woods has never been a speedy wide receiver. That's not his game at all.
Starting point is 00:28:43 He wins with craft and route running. He's never been a speedy wide receiver. That's not his game at all. He wins with craft and route running. He's never been a burner. Robert Woods is not. Come on, guys. Come on. Let's get it together here. So the Titans need a size speed guy in the wide receiver room right now. And I think somebody like a Tyler Johnson, I guess Will Fuller.
Starting point is 00:29:03 You guys know that I like Will Fuller, but no one seems to want him. So Preston Williams, Tyler Johnson. I guess Will Fuller. You guys know that I like Will Fuller, but I just, no one seems to want him. So Preston Williams, Tyler Johnson, I think could make some sense. Outside of that, Alec Lindstrom, the center out of Boston College, who I was very high on during the draft process, I think that Alec Lindstrom would be a great pickup
Starting point is 00:29:26 for the Titans on the interior or the offensive line. He would take Corey Levin's spot immediately. And I see here we should have drafted Kenny Pickett and kept A.J. Brown. That wouldn't have been possible. Kenny Pickett was taken before the 26th pick. So that would have never been a possibility for the Titans to do that. Anyways here,
Starting point is 00:29:50 other than Preston Williams, Tyler Johnson, Alec Lindstrom, I like a guy like OJ Howard. Why not? Tommy Hudson put on injured reserve. Or not put on injured reserve, he was released with an injury designation.
Starting point is 00:30:08 The Titans only have three tight ends. I think getting O.J. Howard in and seeing what he can do. I saw somebody mention the money with O.J. Howard. The Bills paid him $3 million. Ain't nobody paying him more than that. It's going to be way less than that. He's coming on a veteran minimum deal. These guys who are cut today, they're praying to be way less than that. He's coming on a veteran minimum deal. These guys who were cut today,
Starting point is 00:30:30 they're praying to be on an NFL roster tomorrow. They're not calling shots on their contract, okay? OJ Howard ain't that guy to be able to do that. Jared Davis at linebacker. The Titans need a run-stuffing backup linebacker. I don't think that they have it right now. Denzel Mims, I see that as an option, but he didn't get released,
Starting point is 00:30:51 so they'd have to trade for him. And with all the late-round picks, you know, the Titans just sent a fifth-round pick in 2024 and got a seventh-rounder back for Daly. I just don't see John Robinson giving up any more picks to trade for guys. There are so many guys who were cut. I just don't see any trades coming. And more picks to trade for guys. There are so many guys who were cut. I just don't see any trades coming.
Starting point is 00:31:07 And then the final guy that I want to mention, Dennis Kelly. Dennis Kelly was cut by the Colts. I truly wish that the Titans wouldn't have made that trade for Daly and they could just add Dennis Kelly back. No, Ugo Amadi did not get cut. Ugo Amadi made the 53-man roster and like I said, he's a nickelback and Elijah Molden's hurt.
Starting point is 00:31:29 I can see Elijah Molden going on IR as early as tomorrow and then Ugo Amadi is the starting early down running back. Yeah. Like, go get Dennis Kelly. I mean, it can't be worse. It can't be worse. So, anyways, guys, that's a full roster breakdown.
Starting point is 00:31:48 I've gone through every keep and every cut, talked about some waiver options for the Titans as well. I'm going to be back with you guys tomorrow. Remember, the situation is fluid, so we're probably going to get waiver claims tomorrow. We're going to get practice squad information tomorrow. A ton to discuss on tomorrow's show.
