Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans ROOKIE CLASS BREAKING OUT, Linebacker Battle is OVER & Special Teams Panic Must End
Episode Date: August 5, 2025The Tennessee Titans released their first unofficial depth chart of the preseason and the rookie receivers, Elic Ayomanor and Chim Dike, having broken out in camp and ascended on the depth chart into ...prime positions. Rookie tight end Gunnar Helm is also rising as he sits second on the depth chart at tight end. On defense, James Williams has essentially ended the linebacker position battle before it began as he is the certified starter as thing stand now while Femi Oladejo is still set in a reserve role. Finally, the Titans have Jha'quan Jackson listed as the starting kickoff returner and some fans have been shocked by this, but the Titans are clearly looking to get answers on special teams and no one should be panicking. there's a reason this has been the number one Tennessee Titans podcast in the world for multiple years
running make sure that you get subscribed stay subscribed it's your team every day with that being
said you look at the Tennessee Titans first depth chart of the season we start on the
offensive side of the ball. And when I talk about the rookie class balling out, obviously I mean
Cam Ward in that as well. Now, Cam Ward has had an up and down training camp so far. There is
no way around that. But nonetheless, Cam Ward is the number one quarterback for the Tennessee
Titans. He is the starter. And despite some who tried to drum up the quarterback controversy stuff
with Will Levis, even when he was healthy, we all knew if you were being logical that Cam Ward's going
to be the starting quarterback for this team. Now, Brandon Allen, as the backup quarterback,
That's to be expected as well.
We've talked about that.
Brandon Allen was Joe Burroughs back up for a long time in Cincinnati.
He's basically a teacher in the locker room.
And then Tim Boyle behind him.
We moved to the running back spot.
No real surprises there.
Tony Pollard, number one, Tage Spears, number two.
You got Julius Chestnut at number three.
Mullings at four.
And then the two long shots with Mims and Jefferson behind him.
But wide receiver is really where I want to take a moment and look at this.
Because the rookie wide receivers are doing exactly.
what we expected them to do.
And I know when I go over this, some people are going to be like,
well, this is, you know, what the expectation was.
And it's great to have expectations for rookies.
But to see them actually fulfill that,
we saw plenty of rookies throughout the last five to six years
who didn't fulfill their expectations in their first training camp.
So to see rookies actually have expectations
and hit and exceed those expectations,
that's really what stands out to me most looking at
this roster and we'll hit on it as we go, but at wide receiver, you obviously have your veterans
who are going to be listed as the starters with Calvin Ridley is the Z, Tyler Lockett in the slot,
and Van Jefferson as the X wide receiver. But right behind Van Jefferson, you have Ellick I.O. Manor,
the mid-round pick out of Stanford. And I've talked about how I think Iyo Manor is the rookie
receiver who could make the biggest impact right away because of his skill set. He is 6'2,
215 pounds big physical wide receiver and I think that he could be that number one primary
ex receiver for the Titans by the end of the season we could look back and look at that but for
Iomanor to already be in that spot and already have proven that he deserves that spot
that's great stuff and all the great reports from Elico Manor out of camp I don't think it'll be
something where you know he doesn't get on the field because Van Jefferson is out there and you
can move Van Jefferson is around as well that's part of his alert
as a player, but also we see Chim Dike as a number two wide receiver.
And here's the thing, in the slot.
We talked about how DK had the ability to probably play some Z wide receiver,
but also could play as a big slot wide receiver.
DK is 6 foot one.
He's not small like the other slot wide receivers you think of like Kenzie and Restrepo
and even Tyler Lockett.
Like, DK's got a little bit of size to him,
which makes him very appealing as a backup slot.
And again, I would expect by the end of the season that Chim Dike is actually maybe getting the majority of slot reps over a guy like Tyler Lockett.
But to have both the rookie wide receivers already number two on the depth chart with short-term veterans ahead of them, which gives them great opportunity to get a ton of snaps, this was the expectation that we had coming into training camp and the rookies have met the expectation.
So that's what's most exciting for me.
You talk about rookies meeting and exceeding expectation.
We move to Tide-end where Gunner Helm is already.
Gunner-Helm is already the number two tight end on the depth chart
just behind Chigacanquo and again,
I have made my point throughout that I think
Gunner-Helm will ultimately be the Tid-N-1 for this team.
He will play the most snaps at Tide-N this year for the Titans.
Of course, health involved, all of them.
that and Chica Conquo were to go down. I'm not going to be like, oh, I was right, he played the most snaps.
That's not fair. I'm saying if everybody is healthy for the entire season,
I think it would be Gunner Helm, who gets the most snaps at tight end,
even if I think that Chigacanquo will have better statistics and being more explosive offensive weapon.
I just believe in Gunner Helm's versatility, and the fact that he has already passed up a guy like Josh Wiley,
who has a very similar skill set, I think that tells you a lot about how impressive Gunner Helm is.
for it to be two weeks of training camp
and the Titans have already vaulted Gunner Helm
over a third-year player like Josh Wiley
that means something.
That means, and if you go back to the Mike Vrable days,
rookies were never getting out of the doghouse
ever on these depth charts.
So I am very impressed with Gunner Helm,
but this is what I expected.
Again, they're meeting a high expectation
and got to give a ton of credit to Gunner Helm for doing that.
Staying on the offensive side of the ball,
finishing out with the offensive line
no real surprises on the offensive
line when it comes to starters
Dan Moore, Peter Skoronsky on the left side
we know that Cushingberry will be
the starter when he's back McCory Levin is listed
as the starter right now but I've been telling you that
for two weeks that Corey Levin has been
starting at center with Lloyd Cushingberry
out you have Zitler at right guard
J.C. Latham at right tackle
no expectations, no interest
that's what it should be but you go to that second
line and I think when the Titans
brought in a bunch of
of those veterans in free agency, the trio of
Oli Odu, Sam Musfer, and Brandon Jamies, when they brought those guys in,
it was like, oh, they are going to compete with the young guys on the Titans roster already,
the John Ojukoo, the Jalen Duncan, the Andrew Rupcich, the guys who are already there.
Well, all the Titans holdovers have won those battles.
John Ojuku is over Oli Udo.
Jalen Duncan is over Oli Udo and Brandon Crenshaw Dixon,
third string tackle for the Titans.
You look at Blake Hans at second string right guard,
but Andrew Rupsich at second string left guard,
and you would think a guy like Jackson Slater may be able to get into that party,
but Jackson Slater is actually the third string guard
behind Blake Hans and behind Kevin Zitler at right guard.
So that's very interesting to monitor there.
But, again, the Young Titans guys, Duncan, Rupsich, Ajuku,
guys who have been around for a minute,
beating out some of these veteran guys like Jamie's and Udo
and Mustifer who have starting experience.
That's good news.
Not only for the Titans' depth,
because you'd rather have younger guys who are depth guys
so you can keep getting more potential.
But it's also Bill Callahan.
If Bill Callahan has turned Jalen Duncan into a starting offensive tackle,
if Bill Callahan has got
John Ajuku and Andrew Rupsich
to the place where they're beating out
these veterans who have starting experience
that's a good sign
for the offensive line health
overall as a group.
So keep an eye on Jackson Slater though
again third string right guard
I think that he's better than that
I think he's going to play higher than that
I think he's making the team but again
technically he's behind
a guy like Andrew Rupsich
so that's something that's going to be
interesting to watch. But let me know
your guys' thoughts on the offensive side
of the ball, talking about the depth chart.
Who do you think will rise?
Also got to mention one last thing
before I go.
Xavier Restrepo
at wide receiver.
I should have mentioned this when I talked about
wide receiver, but you know.
Xavier Restrepo is behind Mason Kinsey.
He is the fourth string
slot wide receiver right now.
James Prochet is the third string
wide receiver on the outside.
Jaquan Jackson is a third string wide receiver on the outside.
So if you're being honest, Restrepo is behind Jackson
and behind Proche.
So Sheffield, Restrepo, and Landers are the fourth string wide receivers right now.
Not a good sign for Xavier Restrepo,
but he should get some opportunities on special teams.
We'll talk special teams and why some people are not reading this
the right way at the end of the show, but it's time to talk about the defense.

Titans fans. Let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We are breaking down the Tennessee Titans debt chart.
Now look, I did initially have planned for today a look ahead to practice on Wednesday
and the Titans joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday.
But I have a sneaky feeling that Wednesday's practice is not going to be too intense
as the Titans prep for their joint practice and the preseason.
game. So my plan is to have kind of a mix-up episode tomorrow where I do some talk about joint
practice on Thursday and also give some notes on Wednesday's practice for the Titans, which
will be in Tampa Bay because the Titans are going to Tampa Bay on Wednesday to do their first
practice and then their joint practice is on Thursday. And then again, I'm going to go live on Friday
with a bonus episode previewing Saturday night's first preseason game and then I'm going to
live immediately after the Titans preseason game on Saturday night against the Bucks to break
down everything and then we start
Sunday through Thursday a whole new set of shows
again in the Titan second preseason game
is on Friday so I'm gonna have a bonus preview episode
I'm gonna have a live afterwards so much content
coming your way over the next 12, 13, 10 days
whatever it is math is not my strong suit
okay but get locked in
get locked in all right hit subscribe right now
with that being said though looking at the defensive side of the ball
the number one thing that stood out to me is the defensive battle
that we've been watching most closely throughout the process,
and that is linebacker.
And James Williams has won.
There's no or, there's no slash,
there's no differentiator
between Cedric Gray and James Williams
at the second inside linebacker spot.
Otis Reese is the backup to Cody Barton.
But James Williams is just the starting inside linebacker
next to Cody Barton.
He's just the start.
And again, it's early in training camp
and linebacker coach Frank Bush.
He keeps getting questions about James Williams
because it's obvious to everybody there
that James Williams is the starter
and is better than Cedric Greg.
But he doesn't want to like shut down the competition
during camp.
So he's just like, and look, it's early.
You know, these guys are battling.
But James Williams won.
He won.
He was better as a rookie.
He was more available as a rookie.
And he has taken a step forward with his game
in the all season and into training camp.
James Williams is the starter. So, you know, we could talk about updated position battles and all that stuff, which we will throughout training camp, but James Williams, with his size at 6 foot 4, 2.30, with his ability to understand where to be in coverage because he was a former safety. Add that to the mental aspects of playing linebacker now being something that James Williams has gotten better at.
Code to have ourselves a pretty solid player here next to Cody Barton. He's a guy who does need to take a step forward.
for the Tennessee Titans.
Now, staying in the front seven, Femiola DeGio is behind Arden Key.
Femiole Adegio is Arden Key's direct backup.
On the other side, you have Dremont Jones and Jihad Ward.
That makes sense because Dremont Jones and Jihad Ward are similar
in the sense that they have versatility to be on the outside early, kick inside.
I think Jihad Ward and Dremont Jones could even play a little bit of five technique and a five-man front
if they needed to, like, head up on the tackle or outside shoulder of the tackle and a 3-4,
base defense, but what the Titans are doing is they have one defensive end or one outside edge
who does a certain thing and then they have another outside edge who can do certain things.
So if you have Dremont Jones and Jihad Ward who both have that inside versatility,
they can kind of play the same role no matter what you're doing in the defense.
So that's pretty critical right there.
Femiola DeGio, not listed as a starter, but again, he's behind Arden Key.
I think Femiola DeGio is going to play ahead of Arden Key on early downs.
like it's going to be Draymont Jones and Femiola-Dazio out there as the edge on early downs to play against the run
because I don't think Arden Key is a great run defender.
And then when you get to passing downs, you'll probably have Arden Key and Dremont Jones as your primary edge rushers
because Femio is developing those things and he's going to be better against the run than he's going to be against the pass.
So that's just inherently what it's going to be with Femi developing as an off-ball linebacker changing to an edge.
the handwork, the moves, you know, the spin move, the fake spin, the Euro step, the swipe,
all that different stuff, he's just going to have to work on that, and it's going to take time.
He's not going to be a better pass rusher than he has a run defender early on.
So it makes sense what they're doing from that perspective,
and if Femey can play on early downs instead of Arden Key,
you keep Arden Key fresher for the pass rushing situations,
and Arden Key is at his best in the NFL, in my opinion,
and I think it's been bared out throughout his career,
He's at best as a third rusher on a good team.
But it's because he can stay fresh and be more effective when he's out there.
So if he can help spell Arden Key on early downs,
that makes Arden Key better as well and helps the Titans defense.
Defensive line, nothing to say.
Sebastian Joseph Day, Jeffrey Simmons,
Devonre Sweat, and then outside of that, it's rough.
Carlos Watkins, Timmy Horn, James Lynch.
It's rough. Cam Horsley, a guy who we've been excited about, behind James Lynch as the three technique behind Jeffrey Simmons.
So not so much a nose tackle, more of the three technique style.
So that means that Timmy Horn, Isaiah Reichies, they must have really been impressive.
They brought in Timmy Horn recently, but Rakees must have been impressive or they must have like what they saw on Horn's tape to get rid of Keandre Coburn and move him in.
I think that's interesting, but going to the secondary finally.
No shock that you have Xavier Woods and Amani Hookers, your starting safeties.
Kevin Winston, number two, behind Xavier Woods.
And I like that because if Kevin Winston were to replace one of these safeties in the starting lineup during the season,
it should be Xavier Woods, not Amani Hooker.
Mike Brown is the other number two safety.
I think Mike Brown's making this roster.
I have been a Mike Brown stand for two or three seasons now, two seasons, the last two, going into this one.
I think Mike Brown is a really solid depth safety.
The Titans also brought in a new safety,
so it'll be interesting to see how that safety battle works out.
But outside of that, you go to cornerback,
and one of the more interesting things that I saw on the depth chart
was at cornerback.
Because Gabe Judy Lawley,
the second-year undrafted free agent out of Tennessee,
is the only player on the depth chart on offense or defense
listed at two positions.
And he is the backup
at outside corner
for Daryl Baker, which is Ligerius Sneed spot.
So really Gabe Judy Lawley is the
what you would have Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
Legerius Sneed, Daryl Baker,
and then Gabe Judy Lolley would be the fourth
outside cornerback.
And then Gabe Judy Lolley is also listed
as the backup nickel cornerback.
Based on that, Gabe Judy Lolley
is going to make the roster.
If he's the primary backup nickel, and he's, like, right now with Legerius Sneed-out,
the primary backup outside corner, that's pretty clear that he's CB5.
You know what I mean?
But Marcus Harris, the Titans rookie.
Again, listed as the backup cornerback behind Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
I think that Marcus Harris is the clear QB6, or CB6 right now.
And I think if I had to do my, if I did my 53-man roster stuff right now,
I would probably have Marcus Harris and Gabe Judy Lawley making it
and the Titans keeping six cornerbacks with four safeties.
That's what I would probably have right now,
which I'll do another roster prediction, I think, next week
when we get a little bit of time before the Titans have joint practices
against the Atlanta Falcons.
Because the Titans practice once against Tampa Bay,
and that's Thursday, and they'll practice twice against Atlanta next week.
so it'll change the flow up a little bit,
but I'll still be here pumping out episodes nonetheless.
But now we've got to talk about special teams
because Jaquan Jackson is the starting kickoff return guy
and some folks did not like to see that.
But let me talk you off the ledge
if you're worried about that whatsoever.

Today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast
going over the Tennessee Titans depth chart that came out
before this preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers again.
The Tennessee Titans have practice on Wednesday in
not against the Buccaneers.
I'm going to be here to break that down tomorrow
and then I'm going to also look forward
to the joint practice the Titans
do have against the Buccaneers
on Thursday. We'll be here on Thursday
to break that down. Then, Friday
bonus episode previewing the game
Saturday live after the game.
Don't miss any of it. Make sure you get subscribe
and stay subscribed and thanks for making Locked on
Titans your first listen. For your second
listen check out Locked on bets.
Betting experts Lee Sterling and Kevin
Rogers have daily MLB locks.
and can't miss football futures
find locked on bets on YouTube
or wherever you listen to podcasts
but on special teams
some folks were kind of freaking out
look you have Joey Sly is the starting kicker
Joey Sly is the kickoff guy
Johnny Hecker is the punter
Johnny Hecker is the holder
punt returner though
and Morgan Cox is the long snapper
punt returner
you have James Proche
you have ChimDK at number two
and you have Xavier Restrepo at number three
all right and then for kickoff return you have jaquan jackson chimray dk and then t j sepield
as the third guy now some people saw jacuan jackson as the starting kickoff return man and
got upset about that why is that why is he there what are we doing what's going on he had his chance
last year he's not any good why would they do that why would he be the start relax allow me
to explain.
And I talked about this on the Tennessee Titans squad show
on Tuesday morning with Brad Hopkins and Julian Misanone.
If you guys are not checking out the Titan squad show,
it's going to be going like three times a week,
two times a week,
all throughout the season with me, Brad, Julian.
It's going to be awesome.
It's kind of a long form, more bar stool conversation about the team.
Some other voices, great stuff,
but don't worry, locked on Titans is not changing in any way whatsoever.
but just some cool new content for you guys
with some cool new voices that I'm very, very excited about.
But I sat on there.
This is about the coaching staff getting answers.
Jaquan Jackson as the starting kick returner
and James Prochet is the starting punt returner.
T.J. Sheffield and Xavier Restrepo
being the third stringers, respectively at those spots.
It's about answers.
If James Prochet
can't be the Titans punt returner,
he's not going to make the team.
And I think Jaquan Jackson,
if he doesn't do a good job as the kickoff returner
in this game in the preseason,
he'll probably be cut.
All right?
The Titans aren't going to start Jaquan Jackson
as the starting kickoff returner,
but he already failed at the punt returner job.
And if he can't be the kick returner,
He's not going to be on the team.
So the Titans know that Jaquan Jackson is not going to start
at kickoff returner for them.
But they want to give him opportunities to prove
that he deserves to stay on the team.
Same with Prochet.
Prochet is not a lock to make this roster.
Prochet has to be the starting punt returner
or he's not making the team.
James Prochet is not making the team
because of his wide receiver ability.
He's going to make the team
because he can be the seventh best wide receiver
but be the starting punt returner.
So you're not going to take D.K. or Tajay Spears
who are probably actually going to start for you
and give them the most opportunities in the preseason.
It's the preseason.
You don't want them to get hurt.
You don't want to overwork.
People who you're actually going to use.
You need to give as many opportunities in the preseason
as possible to guys who you aren't certain
about if they're going to make this roster.
Now, you need to make sure that your best players and your starters are warmed up.
And I think the Titans better play their starting players quite a bit,
especially on offense.
The defense, maybe they can have a little time off,
but the offense needs to play.
And I'll talk about that later in the week when I do my preseason game preview.
The Titans need to play.
Cam Ward needs to play.
But outside of getting your starters ready to go in a limited capacity,
the whole reason for the preseason is to let these depth guys battle it out.
And that's not any different on special teams.
Jaquan Jackson is listed as the starter.
James Prochet is listed as the starter at punt return.
Xavier Restrepo and T.J. Sheffield are going to get a ton of work
on both of those as well when possible.
Because they're trying to see whether these guys can earn their roster spot or not.
They know Taji Spears can be their starting kick returner.
They know Chim Ray D.K. can do it.
We know Chim Ray D.K. is going to make the team.
But Prochet, Jackson especially, Restrepo, Sheffield.
You're not going to burn out your real returners
when you can use these opportunities to get answers on these other guys
who you aren't certain about.
So don't freak out about Jouan Jackson
isn't going to be the starting kickoff returner
unless he goes nuts.
And then it's a good thing for the Titans.
So you just got to understand sometimes
what the coaching staff is trying to accomplish by doing this
and understand that the preseason during
or the depth chart during the preseason
can be as much about getting answers on guys
as it can be, oh, these are the starters
and, you know, as a look into where they're at.
So I think certain spots you can look at
and say, hey, this is the depth chart, this is behind who.
But you've got to also look at certain spots
and especially, especially, especially special teams
and realize this is about the coaches
getting answers on these end of the roster depth chart guys,
not so much figuring out who is actually going to start.
So with that being said,
that is going to do it for today's debt chart review.
Let me know your guys' thoughts about the offense,
the defense, special teams, all that down below.
Tomorrow, I'm going to recap Wednesday's practice
while also getting you ready for joint practices.
Thursday will recap joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
and then it's on to a preseason preview.
a real game preview baby and then we got a Tennessee Titans football game on Saturday night
