Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans ROSTER CUTS BEGIN, Defensive Depth Predictions & Top Waiver Claim Will Be Used
Episode Date: August 25, 2025The Tennessee Titans are in the process of cutting down their roster and Tyler is going over who he thinks will make the 53-man roster on the defensive side of the ball after discussing the offense on... yesterday's show. The issue with going through the roster on defense is there is not enough talent. This leaves the Titans with a lot of spots where they simply need to fill a space, but the player shouldn't be too comfortable as the place holder. The reason for that is because the Titans have the number one spot in the waiver claim and will be keeping an eye on every player cut around the league. Tennessee Titans roster cuts have begun.
I'll tell you who got the axe on Monday
and who I think survives on today's edition of Locked on Titans.

But with that being said, the Tennessee Titans began making roster cuts on Monday.
They cut 16 players.
I'm going to tell you who got cut.
I'm also going to tell you who I think makes the roster on the defensive
side of the ball and at the end of the show
we'll go over my final
53 man roster
prediction including yesterday's
offensive predictions and then today's
defensive predictions and cuts.
Before we dive into all of that though, do want to
thank you for making Locked on Titans
your first listen each and every day.

is right around the corner roster is going to be finalized on tuesday i'm going to be here
to break it all down with you it's your team every day here on the locked on titans podcast but
with that being said again roster cuts have begun 16 players got cut by the tennessee titans
on Monday.
All right.
Now, out of those 16 players,
I would only tell you that three of them
have any noteworthy quality to them at all.
Number one, Jaquan Jackson,
the Titan's sixth round pick from last year,
totally failed as a punt returner,
got beat out by multiple players
at his position this year.
Big failure for Rancarthorn,
and I got to tell you,
we've heard a lot about Tajay Spears
having a rough year on and off the field
last year, Rancar Thon, who we know loved Taji Spears
and raved about him all the time.
Is it possible that Rancar Thon over-drafted a guy
who was Tadier Spears' best friend and roommate in college
because Spears was going through some things
and Rancar Thon really cared about him?
I'm just saying, I'll take off the aluminum foil hat,
but that one, not looking so good for Rancar Thon right now.
Also, Julius Wood got cut at safety.
We talked about him potentially making the rock.
because he had had pretty good preseason.
He's been helpful on special teams.
But he is suspended for one game to start the season,
the end of a six-game suspension.
So you wonder if that factored into the decision
to move on from him pretty quickly.
And then finally,
I would say that Matt Landers is a guy that stood out to me
as a part of the first wave of cuts.
Landers 6 foot 3, 6 foot 4,
huge guy out of Arkansas.
But dealing with an injury right now
and he was actually waived due to injury.
So those are the three that stand out to me.
Other than that, what I would say is,
there's a lot of corners that got cut.
Jalen Kimber out of Penn State,
Davion Ross, Clarence Lewis,
Jermari Harris out of Iowa.
The Titans brought in a ton
of undrafted free agent cornerbacks,
safeties,
and basically none of them
were able to break through and make an impact.
None of the undrafted guys
that they brought in in the secondary.
So that's unfortunate for the Titans,
but outside of,
the guys that we've talked about so far
Joshua Bledso
who was a back end of the roster
safety cut
Amari Bernie at linebacker
Joe Graziano
Josiah Bronson T.J. Smith at Interior
defensive line Arlington
Hambright at Interior Offensive Line
who I'm still not convinced as a real
person. Sam Mustifer
one of the Titans veterans they brought in
on the offensive line cut
and then T.J. Sheffield, who was an undrafted free agent wide receiver, also cut.
The last guy I want to mention that got cut is Desmond Evans.
Desmond Evans was an undrafted free agent edge rusher, big-bodied guy.
I think he was number 57, and he really stood out when you watched him out there.
He's just huge, long, physical edge.
And I thought that Desmond Evans had a pretty good chance of being a practice squad guy.
But here's the reality.
If you're part of these first 16 cuts,
you're not probably going to be on the practice squad.
Think about the roster math.
The Titans had 91 players on the roster.
They have to cut down to 53.
Quick math, that's 38 people.
Well, if they're cutting 38 people
and you were part of the first 16 and not the second 22,
probably not a good sign for you.
You know what I mean?
Like, the guys that are getting cut in this wave
are guys who are not probably going to be able
to continue their NFL careers for much longer.
Julius Wood may be an exception to that,
but it's not good to be part of these first wave of cuts.
It's not what you're looking for.
If you're one of these players,
you would hope that the team would be more interested
and would keep you considered for a little bit longer.
And a lot of these guys, teams don't care
if other teams know they're going to be out on the waiver wire.
See, what you can do is if you cut guys a little later on,
maybe you can, you know, teams commit their resources to other players,
and then you might get a guy to slide through
and get them back on the practice squad.
That's not going to happen with this first group of cuts.
These are guys who the Titans care about the least.
And that's just the cold, hard truth about it.
So, 16 players already cut by the Tennessee Titans.
Again, only a couple of names that I think matter.
But let me just say this.
There's one name that wasn't in these cuts.
And it's Xavier Restrepo.
And I've resigned myself.
I took my L already.
I let you guys take your victory laps.
Tyler was wrong.
He said Xavier Restrepo would be a lock.
he's probably not going to make the roster.
I basically already accepted my fate
and accepted that I did not hit 100%
of my 53-man roster predictions
from a couple of months ago.
But he wasn't cut yet.
Xavier Estrepo was not part
of the first 16.
So,
you're saying there's a chance.
That's all I'm saying is there is a chance.
And like I just talked about,
I think what we could see for the Titans
is Xavier Restrepo could be one of the last
players that get cut.
I know that he went undrafted,
but just because you go undrafted doesn't mean that another team
wouldn't be interested in picking you up on their practice squad.
Maybe Xavier Restrepo was mad about the lack of opportunities
that he got in Tennessee.
He would rather go somewhere else
where they're actually going to give him a chance.
That's all possible once you cut him
and you put him out on the open market.
Now, if you do that later in the process,
as late as you possibly can in the process,
it's possible that a team that might be interested
already decided that they're going to claim
a different wide receiver they got cut
and they already used those resources
or plan to use those resources
and then maybe
you could slide Xavier Restrepa
through waivers without anybody claiming them
and you can get him back on your practice squad
if he's not mad at the team
which I don't think he will be
but you never know what could happen
you never know how people react to certain things
but at the end of the day
we saw a first wave of cuts happen on Monday
and he wasn't a part of it
So that gives me at least a little bit,
at least a little bit of hope
that Restrepo might be able to find a way
on to the 53.
But speaking of the 53,
let's talk about who I think actually does make the roster
on the 53.
Can't wait to dive into the defensive side of the ball.
Do want to let you guys know
that today's episode is brought to you

Let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about the roster cuts that have already happened.
Why I think the timing is the timing
and Xavier Restrepo didn't get cut yet.
But let's do my defensive roster predictions.
We're going to start in the front seven.
Before we dive in, do I want to thank you again
for making Locked on Titans your first.
listen if you want to help out us here over at the locked on podcast network we'd love to hear from you we put together a survey to learn more about you guys and make your favorite podcasts even better go to locked on podcast.com slash survey to get started everyone who completes a survey will be entered for a chance to win one of ten one hundred dollar Amazon gift cards again that's locked on podcast dot com slash survey you can find the link in the show notes as well thanks for helping us out but with that being said on the interior defensive line
I think that this is a place where the Titans could do a lot of waiver-wire work.
I am not 100%, and I have not been for years,
not 100% happy with the interior defensive line depth.
At the top, you could argue it's the Titans best position group.
Jeffrey Simmons, Tavondre Sweat, Sebastian Joseph Day,
really, really good group there, up at the top.
But after that, I would say James Lynch,
does make the roster, and if the Titans, if the Titans keep a fifth interior defensive lineman on the initial roster,
I think it would be Cam Horsley.
But here's the thing, here's the reality.
Even if they keep James Lynch and they keep Cam Horsley,
I still think Lynch and Horsley have a great chance to not make it to the final group.
Like, so honestly, I would tell you, I don't think Cam Horsley gets kept.
I just think he's an option.
He could be a placeholder type guy.
I would tell you that the Titans are going to keep four interior defensive linemen.
Jeffrey Simmons, Tavondre Sweat, Sebastian Joseph Day, and James Lynch.
Those will be the only guys that make the initial 53.
And James Lynch could be a guy who's replaced with a waiver.
But I think the Titans ultimately during the season will carry five interior defensive linemen.
And I think Cam Horsley is a guy who goes to the practice squad.
for the Titans so they can keep developing him
but I think they're going to get another veteran
at some point off of waivers
and carry five interior defensive linemen
with Lynch being number four
a waiver guy being number five but the
initial 53
I think you'll have four interior
defensive linemen in Lynch
and then the starting three but
outside of that we go to the edge
rusher group and I think the Tennessee
Titans are going to have five edge
rushers Arden Key Dreymont Jones
and Femiola Dejio are absolute
locks to make the roster.
After that, it's a little more dicey.
But I think Jihad Ward, I think Jihad Ward, who the Titans brought in during training
camp, I think Jihad Ward makes the team.
I think he adds versatility.
He's real physical against the run.
He can rush from the interior as well.
I think that versatility makes me more confident that Jihad.
I'm not going to call him a lock necessarily, but I think Jihad Ward will make the roster.
And I don't think he's somebody who's going to be replaced by a waiver claim.
lame guy. Now, Allie Gay, I think
Ali Gay makes the roster as the Titans' fifth edge rusher,
okay? The thing with Ali Gay is he's super long,
six foot six, and I think the Titans want bigger, longer, edge rushers.
But Allie Gay is another one of these guys who I would say is a placeholder.
I think the Titans have five edge rushers on the roster.
I just don't think that fifth edge rusher is going to be Allie Gay all year.
I could see Allie Gay is just a placeholder,
for when the Titans use their waiver claims.
Again, they're number one in the waiver claim process,
which means they could claim as many players as they want.
They get first dibs on every player.
Now, we'll talk about waivers
and why not every player is on waivers at the end of the show.
But Allie Gay, I think, makes the initial 53
but is a placeholder for someone who they get off waivers.
But five edge rushers for the Titans
then we go to the linebacker group
and I kept trying to find a fourth linebacker
kept trying to find a fourth linebacker
and I just didn't
I don't want Curtis Gray
I don't want Brian Osamoa
I don't want Curtis Gray
Curtis Jack Jacobs
like I kept trying to decide
whether I wanted Osamoa or Jacobs
or you know
and I'm sorry
but I don't want any of them
I think the Titans keep three linebackers
on their initial 53
but I think they use a waiver claim on one or two.
Like the Titans are going to carry at least, at least, at least
four linebackers on the roster this year.
They're not going to have three linebackers on the roster all year.
But the first initial 53,
why would you use a roster spot on Curtis Jacobs or Brian Ossemoa?
Why? Why do that?
They're not valuable enough to do that.
So just go in with three,
understanding that you're going to cut somebody who makes the initial 53
to add a linebacker on waivers.
That's what I would be doing if I was the Titans.
There's just no reason to keep a fourth linebacker
if none of them have proven that they're worth it.
Now, we move to the secondary.
At cornerback,
Legerius Sneed, Jarvis Brownlee Jr., Roger McCreery,
No surprises there, right?
Go with Marcus Harris, the Titans rookie,
cornerback out of cow,
Daryl Baker Jr., who I think has been passed on the depth chart by Marcus Harris,
but Daryl Baker Jr. still someone you can count on
who knows the system who's been around.
And then I am going to add Gabe Judy Lawley.
Like, to me, I would rather keep Gabe Judy Lawley
on the team than one of the fourth linebackers.
I would rather keep Gabe Judy Lawley on the team
than one of the fifth interior defensive lineman.
Now, I think Gabe Judy Lawley gets cut on Wednesday.
I don't think that Gabe Judy Lawley stays on the team.
I think he's one of those guys who's a placeholder player.
All right?
And the Titans are going to go to the waiver claim
and look to get another cornerback.
Or even go to free agency for a Razul Douglas
or an Asante Samuel Jr. or something like that
depending on what they really feel like behind the scenes
with Legerius Sneed.
but let me say this
Gabe Judy Lawley is a guy who's played in the slot
and he's played a little bit outside
but he's primarily been Roger McCreary's backup
throughout the process
with Roger McCreery
being a slot
with Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
being a guy who I think is more suited for the slot
and he even said that when he came out of college
with Marcus Harris
also being a guy
who I think is better in the slot.
You have three guys right there who are going to make the roster,
who I think are at their best playing slot nickel cornerback.
What the Titans need, in my opinion,
is not for their sixth cornerback to be a slot guy like Judy Lawley,
if that's what the Titans see.
The Titans need more help at outside corner,
where Legerious Sneed may be uncertain with this health.
health, where again, Jarvis Brownlee Jr. is a shorter, smaller, outside corner.
Marcus Harris, again, a smaller, shorter outside corner.
The Titans need more cornerbacks with size that can play on the outside.
They have enough cornerbacks that could be good on the interior if Roger McCreary were to get banged up.
I would rather have an outside corner who could, if Roger McCreary were to get hurt,
or if Jarvis Brownlee Jr. were to get hurt, or if Marcus Harris were.
to get hurt, or if Lageria Steed were to get hurt.
They could play on the outside, and then you could kick Marcus
Harris or Jarvis Brownlee Jr. or leave Roger McCreary inside.
To me, it's not even a question. The Titans need
outside boundary cornerbacks with size and length
more than they need more slot guys.
So if they see Gabe Judy Lawley is a backup slot,
I just don't think that he's somebody
who they necessarily need to keep on the roster. And here's the thing.
if the Titans keep Gabe Judy Lawley on the roster
through the initial 53
and then use a waiver claim
and cut Gabe Judy Lawley
other teams will have already filled up their practice squads
and you've got a better chance to getting Gabe Judy
Lolley back on your practice squad
which is what I think the Tennessee Titans really want
they want to keep him around so that they can continue developing him
so that's where I see the cornerback room
now we finish with safety
five safeties I don't think
this is super controversial. Amani Hooker,
Xavier Woods, Kevin Winston,
quandary digs, Mike Brown.
I went with Mike Brown over Kendall Brooks.
I thought Kendall Brooks was very impressive
throughout the preseason.
But I went Mike Brown like I talked about recently
because he is the personal protector
for the punt coverage team.
Mike Brown is a critical, very important
special teams member.
I don't think that quandary digs is going to play
a bunch of special teams.
You don't want to overwork Kevin Winston Jr.
having him play a bunch of special teams.
so I think a guy like Mike Brown
who can be that
that number one special teams player
from the safety position
I think that's critical
so I think Mike Brown makes the team
so if you're keeping score at home
that's four interior defensive linemen
three linebackers
five edge rushers
that's 12
and then we went with
five safeties
and six cornerbacks
so we're up to 23
players on the defensive side of the ball
to go with the 26 players
that we had on offense yesterday
or we had 27 on offense yesterday
and we have 23 players plus the three specialists
Hecker, Sly and Cox
so that's 26 with special teams in defense
27 with offense
that's your 53 and let's talk about the full picture
of the roster right now

Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about how the roster cuts have already begun.
The Titans cut 16 players.
Xavier Estrepo wasn't one of them.
We did my roster predictions on the defensive side of the ball.
Now, I want to take a look at the roster as a whole and once again talk about, you know,
the waiver claim and how the Titans are going to set this up.
But before I do want to thank you again for making Locked on.
and Titans your first listen for your second listen check out locked on fantasy football i told you
where to play your fantasy football now you need to get advice for your fantasy football leagues
from locked on fantasy football with viny ire and the data queen michelle maju they're
going to get you ready for your fantasy draft so you can take home the trophy this season
find locked on fantasy football on youtube or wherever you listen to podcasts but looking at the
entire roster here for the tennessee titans again at quarterback two quarterbacks
Cam Ward, Brandon Allen, did four running backs with Tony Pollard, Tage Spears,
Callum Mullings, and Julius Chestnut, although I think Tage Spears is probably going to go
on injured reserve is, I think, what's going to happen.
He's going to go on injured reserve to start the season, which is going to open up a spot right away.
Then at wide receiver, Calvin Ridley, Van Jefferson, Tyler Lockett, Bryce Oliver, Chim D.K.,
Elicayo Manor, and James Prochet.
Prochay getting that designated punt returner role.
that is seven wide receivers
then tight ends, four tight ends
Chica Conquo, Gunnard Helm,
David Martin Robinson, Josh Wiley
don't think the Titans are going to have
four tight ends all year. I think they settle on three
but they don't have their third tight end yet.
Went with 10 offensive linemen
a backup for every spot.
Dan Moore, Peter Skoronsky, Lloyd Cushionberry
Kevin Zeitler,
not Daniel Brunskill
following along their home.
J.C. Latham,
John Adjuku, Blake Hans, Corey Levin,
Jackson Slater and Ali Udo.
So that's what I have on the offensive side of the ball
that goes with what we talked about on defense.
And again, I just don't think,
I just don't think that this 53-man roster is what 53-man rosters
have been in the past for the Titans.
We have talked about, you know, the 53-man roster for the Titans,
and it's going to be mostly the guys who are going to be on the team.
But I just think there's going to be so much waiver claim activity
for the Titans this year.
five to seven guys is what I would say for waiver claims.
And again, the Titans have the number one waiver claim.
This is not like your fantasy football league
where once you use the waiver claim on a player, you go to last.
No, the Titans finished last in the NFL last year.
They get number one waiver claim all offseason.
And the way that this works is take every player that's cut in the NFL.
The Titans can claim 20 of them if they wanted to.
every player in the NFL
the Titans have right of first refusal
Basically the Titans get to look at every player
And say no I don't want him
No I don't want him
Yes I do want him
Yes I do want him
Basically the Titans get to go through the grocery store
First before anybody else
They could pick as many heads of lettuce
They can pick as many ribby steaks
They can make as many bags of chips
And then everybody else gets the leftovers after that
And that's going to be the case for the Titans
until week four of the NFL season
So that's going to be a huge, huge advantage for them this year.
And it's not like they go back to the bottom of the line
after they use their waiver claim.
Again, they can use as many as they want.
Now, I would say 5 to 7 is what makes the most sense.
Now, I want to say this too.
Waivers don't work for every player.
Every player is not available on waivers like Mike Hilton.
Mike Hilton is a veteran cornerback,
was playing for the Dolphins this preseason.
The Dolphins cut him.
Mike Hilton has been in the NFL for more than four years.
So he is not subject to waiver claims.
That's only for people with less than four years of NFL service to their record.
So not everybody is a...
If the Titans cut Calvin Ridley right now,
he wouldn't go on waivers.
He's a vested veteran who would get to be a free agent
and pick whatever team he wants.
So not every player that gets cut that you see
is somebody that the Titans can pick up on waivers,
just so you realize that.
But, anybody else, the Titans, again, get first crack at.
So keep that in mind as players start to get cut on tomorrow's show
after we see what the roster cutdowns look like.
I'll probably look at some other guys who got cut who interest me at minimum,
guessing who the Titans are going to claim on waivers is a losing game.
And you know how it works for me.
I can make a prediction.
If I'm not 100% right, everybody goes nuts.
Even though nobody cares when other people gets prediction wrong.
But let me be one player wrong on my 53-man roster.
and, you know, I'm going to hear about it all day long.
But I'm not going to be out here guessing waivers.
But I'll tell you some guys that I'm interested in after we see all of the cuts around the NFL.
Remember, the best players that are going to get cut are all going to get cut on Tuesday.
Do you want to mention one thing that's not about a cut.
Jacoby Myers requested a trade from the Raiders.
I don't think that he gets it.
But Jacobi Myers is the type of player who the Titans might be able to do,
they might be able to do Van Jefferson.
and a fifth round pick.
And Jacoby Myers is a much better player
than Van Jefferson.
I don't think the Titans should do that.
I don't think Jacobi Myers is good enough
for the Titans to make that play.
But the reality is,
Jacob Myers has had like 800 yards
for four straight seasons.
He's a very consistent, very productive,
very professional player.
I think there are other teams out there
that it would make more sense for,
like the Steelers who are more trying to win right now.
But I know that there are going to be
some Titans fans who see that and say,
oh he would make sense and he would make sense
I think Jacobi Myers is a good possession receiver
who would make sense with Calvin Ridley
and would take some pressure off the younger wide receivers
again much better player than Van Jefferson in my opinion
but to make it happen I just don't know if it makes sense for the Titans
but if they find a way to make it happen
it's not something that I'm going to be against
like sure let's make wide receiver better around Cam Ward
I just don't I just don't know if there's going to be a deal
that does make sense for the Titans but with that in mind
that is going to do it for me today folks
roster cutdowns will be complete by the time we talk tomorrow.
Can't wait to dive into all that with you guys.
I might be going live at 4 p.m. Eastern time
when the cuts are official.
Might do that.
Might not though.
We'll see.
But that's going to do it for me today.
Folks, as always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland.
And this was Locked on Titans.
Thank you.
