Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans ROSTER NEARLY FULL After Hendon Hooker, KJ Osborn & Michael Carter Signings
Episode Date: April 2, 2026The Tennessee Titans made four signings on Wednesday all on the offensive side of the ball, Hendon Hooker, Michael Carter, KJ Osborn and Lance McCutcheon, and that brings their roster total to 78 play...ers, give or take. Add in the expected nine draftees they will add in a few weeks and that gets you very close to the limit of 90 players. That would be fine, but typically teams will load up on 10 or more undrafted free agents each year. That means either the Titans plan on a mass exodus soon or they don't intend to be very active in the undrafted free agent pool, which would be a surprise. The Tennessee Titans brought in some new players on Wednesday, and now the roster is too full.
They have to make more room before they get to the NFL draft.
I'll explain why on today's edition of Locked on Titans.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network,
your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland Titans fans.
on today's show. We're gonna talk about the four signings the Titans made on Wednesday.
What each of those players is going to do and what their role is going to be.
We'll talk about why the Titans have too many players on the roster right now
and this is exactly what competition on the roster looks like.
Before we get into all of it, I do want to thank you for making Locked on Titans,

So make sure, again, that you stay locked in with Locked on Titans.
But with that being said,
the Titans did make some more veteran-free agent moves
on Wednesday. They brought in four different players.
And of course, they add two more players immediately after I talked to you guys
yesterday afternoon. But they bring in Hendon Hooker at quarterback, Michael Carter at
running back, and two wide receivers, Lance McCutcheon, and K.J. Osborne.
KJ. Osborne being the most productive of those players.
But all four of these players are simply camp competition.
And we'll talk about the fact that this is what competition looks like.
like, but each of their individual roles is nothing more than a camp body at this point.
You look at Hendon Hooker.
He's played three games in his career, thrown nine passes.
Hendon Hooker is just a quarterback three.
He's a practice squad guy.
Now, does this mean that Will Levis is more likely to get traded like we talked about yesterday?
I don't really think it affects that he was going to get traded before.
But it kind of just confirms it.
It puts a period at the end of the sentence.
Like, there is our practice squad third quarterback for the season.
and most likely.
Maybe they bring in somebody else to compete with Hendon Hooker,
but that's the role that he's fighting for.
Michael Carter, I saw some people, you know,
uh-oh, Jeremiah Love, they're not taking Jeremiah Love.
I saw some love stands, some Love Nuts getting down.
I don't think that Michael Carter means that the Tennessee Titans
are not going to take Jeremiah Love in the first round.
It doesn't really have an effect on it whatsoever, in my opinion.
Michael Carter is a guy who can compete with Julius Chestnut,
compete with Calell Mullings.
You know what I mean? He's that type of player.
5 foot 8, 200 pounds.
Played for Robert Sala before with the New York Jets.
Has been with Arizona ever since.
He's just a productive third running back to have in the rotation.
He'll play special teams.
He's a good person, good guy in the locker room,
knows the culture.
What's expected of him will do the right things.
Michael Carter, again, is competing with Julius Chestnut
and Calell Mullings for the RB3 spot or the RB4 spot right now.
He's not going to prevent the Titans from taking Jeremiah Love.
if they take Jeremiah Love, they're just going to cut Tony Pollard.
So that is how the math works out on that one.
And then they add two wide receivers.
KJ. Osborne.
KJ. Osborne is interesting.
All right.
He had some good seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.
He had a three-year stretch where he had most of his career production.
He had 650, 65, 650, 540 yards, back-to-back seasons.
He scored 15 total touchdowns.
He caught 150 passes.
Like the majority of his career production came in that three-year window.
And since then, he's dropped off a cliff.
He's been with New England for a little bit, was with Washington for a little bit,
didn't even play in the NFL last year, like get in an actual game.
He was practice squad surfing and everything.
So maybe KJ Osworn is just out, you know,
most career NFL careers last about three and a half years.
Right? So he's already beat that, but he's just another guy.
And I think that he's somebody that's competing for the backup Wondale Robinson role.
Like, Wondale Robinson is the starter for the Tennessee Titans.
He's the starting slot.
Well, who's going to back him up and be his direct backup?
Yeah, Ridley could play a little in the slot.
D.K. could play a little in the slot.
But they're not going to be the direct slot backup.
I think K.J. Osborne is a guy fighting for that role.
And he's going to compete with a guy like Xavier Restrepo.
So this is Restrepo competition.
They brought in Lance McCutcheon, and I don't really like the move.
He was retired.
Like he had told everybody that he was retired.
And they came back, he hasn't played in an NFL game since 2022.
This has got to be an agent favor or something like, you know,
hey, my guy wants to have a try out here.
Can you let him come to camp?
Sure, why not?
You know what I mean?
That's what that is.
So I wouldn't take anything from the Lance McCutcheon move.
He isn't going to be around.
He isn't going to make it.
But the bigger point here is with all four of those signings,
the Tennessee Titans are now up to about,
78, 79 players, 77, 78, 79. And you can only have 90. Now, if you have an
international pathway player like the Titans had with Thomas O'Don Coyer for years and years and
years, then you can have a 91st player or a 17th player on practice squad, but that's
a conversation for another day. It's a footnote. But the Titans only have 13 spots left and
they have nine rookies. Now, I don't know if you know this, but that would only leave
Uh-oh. The math is only four spots for undrafted free agents.
Carry the two. There we go.
That's not a lot of room.
The Titans usually bring in NFL teams
usually bring in on their 90-man roster.
They'll have 10, 10 plus undrafted free agents.
Usually you would have about, you know, 70 to 75 players on your roster.
then you add your undrafted free agents.
So if the Titans actually have
nine draft picks,
you add that to the
78 that they're already at,
that's 87, you know,
three spots.
No, 70, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Math, not my strong suit.
As you can tell, I'm fighting demons behind the scenes
up there in the noggin.
But the point is,
three or four spots, no matter what they happen to have right now,
is not enough for undrafted free agency.
That doesn't make any sense at all.
And I refuse to believe that that's what the Titans' plan is.
I think we're going to see the Titans cut a wave of different people very, very soon.
Like, they're going to have to make some room in one way or another.
You know, they absolutely have to.
And there's a lot of guys on the roster that I just don't, you know,
a Hal Presley, at wide receiver,
Garrett Dellinger on the O-line,
Clay Webb, Drew Moss, Trey Hill,
Ryan Hayes, all, you know,
camp body offensive linemen.
They're going to keep them around.
Joel Wilson at tight end.
You know, Blake Watson at running back.
There are plenty of people that they could shave off this roster.
I mean, they have a ton of edges right now,
like Nate Lynn, Truman Jones,
David Ed Bucca, I think, Allie Gay.
There's a lot of room that they have to make.
can make right here to clear out more space on the roster.
But I think it's got to happen before the NFL draft
because as soon as the draft ends,
the undrafted free agency gets wild.
And you've got to make sure that you have roster spots
that you can give to these guys
because it's literally the Wild Wild West
with undrafted free agency, bonuses,
guaranteed amounts, negotiations,
playing time, opportunities in camp and pre-seating.
Like, there's so much that you've got to negotiate with.
If you don't even have a roster spot available
for a guy that you're trying to sell
to be an undrafted free agent.
That could make things a little bit more complicated,
and he could just go at easier path of resistance
and go with somebody else that he doesn't have to wait on,
and it couldn't pull his deal
and can't make the agreement right now
because they have roster moves to make.
So I think that is something that we've got to watch here
in the next two weeks, three weeks before the NFL draft kicks off
is do the Titans clear out a chunk of their roster to make room
because right now they simply don't have the typical standard room
that you would have going into the NFL draft.
So with that being said, though, again, this is what competition looks like, folks.

And so let's cap off today's bonus edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
Again, we talked about the additions the Titans made on Wednesday.
Talked about why the roster is far too full right now.
But this is what competition looks like, guys.
When you hear Mike Borgonzi or you hear Robert Saller,
you hear any coach in the history of coaching,
say, we want competition all up and down the roster.
This is what that looks like.
You might just think about starters.
We want people competing for starting roles.
We want our backups to be as good as our starters.
And of course, you do want that.
You do want that.
That would be great.
The best teams have guys who are starting level players who aren't starters.
But competition applies to every spot.
So you may not be working.
about RB4 or RB3,
but Michael Carter getting added
is competition
for Julius Chestnut,
for Colell Mullings.
That's what competition looks like.
Maybe that's not the number one thing
that you think of when you think of
competition, but that's exactly what it looks like.
When you bring in
Hendon Hooker, Will Levis,
that's what competition looks like.
You know, KJ. Osborne,
Xavier Restrepo, Mason Kinsey,
That's what competition looks like.
You have to beat out a veteran who's been a productive player in the NFL throughout his career.
If Xavier Restrepo's career went like KJ Osborne and he had a KJ Osborne role with the Vikings with the Titans,
his career is a success. He did it.
Wow.
500, 600 yard seasons.
15 total touchdowns in three years.
150 catches in three years.
If Xavier Ostrepo put that together,
we would be singing his praises.
One of the greatest undrafted free agents of team history,
like Nick Westbrook-Akeenay.
Who did it? He did it. He put together a great career.
Most people, you know, 99.9% of people on this earth,
less than that.
You know, there are more nines after the decimal.
We'll get to have the kind of career in the NFL
that Nick Westbrook Aquine did that KJ Osborne did.
Can you beat him out?
because you have to be better than a guy like that
who had his peak and is on the way down.
If you're not better than a guy like that,
you're not going to make it.
Because you need to be rising into your peak.
That's what competition looks like.
Lance McCutcheon is a bigger-bodied wide receiver guy.
Maybe the Titans playing on grabbing one of these big-bodied guys
that we talked about yesterday, a Reggie Virgil or Jeff Caldwell,
getting one of these bigger-bodied-wide receivers at the end of the draft,
then you go up against him.
Oliver, you go up against him.
So that is what competition
looks like.
We don't always think of it that way, but that is
how you create, when every single person
on the team knows, I am competing
for my spot against this person.
That is the competition that coaches talk about, that the general
manager talks about, and they want to add
that all over the roster.
So, you know, everybody
wants to make a big statement
off of every move,
but individually speaking, none of these moves,
I think can be traced to the big state.
Hendon Hooker, you know, isn't competing to be the backup with Mitch Trubisky.
It doesn't necessarily mean Will Levis is getting traded.
I thought he was getting traded before that ever happened.
So that can't be more motivation there.
Michael Carter means no Jeremiah Love, KJ Osborne,
and, you know, Lance McCutcheon mean the Titans aren't going to look to add wide receiver in the draft.
No.
It's just back end of the roster competition.
because everybody needs somebody to compete against.
And bringing in some of these veteran guys
who can go against maybe some younger players,
that's what it looks like.
So, though I would tell you,
out of all four,
the guy who I think actually could make the roster
is Michael Carter.
He's a better player than Julius Chesno.
So if they don't add a running back in the draft,
I think Michael Carter is RB3.
And if they add Jeremiah Love,
and cut Tony Pollard, I think that Michael Carter could still be RB3.
He runs tougher than Tage Spears.
He's not as good of an athlete.
Plays special teams.
I think Michael Carter has a good chance to make this roster.
But with that being said, again, that's going to do it for me today,
folks. I'll be back with you tonight for the full length 30-minute edition
of Locked on Titans.
Thank you so much for tuning in.
If you're watching on YouTube, thumbs up on the video,
tighten up down in the chat.
With that being said, that's going to do it for me today, folks.
as always. I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
