Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Should SAY NO TO MATT NAGY in Head Coaching Search & Concerning Candidate Reports
Episode Date: December 23, 2025The Tennessee Titans head coaching search is still the most important thing they must handle ahead of them and as we get closer to the end of the season when the search will really ramp up, we start t...o get more reports on what the options could be. Matt Nagy, the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator and former Chicago Bears head coach, continues to be named as a possibility. The Titans should not hire Matt Nagy and the fact he keeps coming up is concerning. The rest of the recently reported names doesn't inspire a lot of hope either. It is limited on the offensive side of the ball and some great options aren't mentioned that should be. However, these reports always have an intent so we should not take them as certainty. Finally, Jeffery Simmons made the pro bowl in the AFC and he should also win an all-pro spot with it. Chimere Dike also got a pro-bowl nod as a returner in the AFC. A tremendous feat as a rookie. On today's show
I am gonna tell you why I would absolutely not hire Matt Nagy
Why he is one of my least favorite candidates
That have been reported for the Tennessee Titans
Despite the fact that he continues to be mentioned in the reports
After I talk about Matt Nagy as a terrible option for the Titans,
I'm going to go over all the other names that were a part of a recent report
on the Tennessee Titans head coaching search.
And I'll be honest with you, I don't really like the list very much either.
So we're going to go over that and why you've got to take it with a grain of salt as well.
And then two Tennessee Titans made the Pro Bowl,
one of them being Jeffrey Simmons and not only should he make the Pro Bowl,
Jeffrey Simmons should be a first team all pro.
Before we get into all of that,
do want to thank you for making the Lockdown Titans podcast,
your first listen.
Thank you for making the Locked-on Podcast Network, the number one sports podcast network.

You want to stay up to date.
You want to stay informed on all the candidates.
This is the place to do it.
make sure you stay locked in with the Locked on Titans podcast.
But again, just say no to Matt Nagy.
Matt Nagy would be a disaster.
Matt Nagy would be a terrible hire and it makes me absolutely terrified
that he continues to be rumored, continues to be mentioned
anytime there's a report on the Tennessee Titans head coaching search
and we got a report last weekend from Diana Rusini
who talked about the Tennessee Titans search
and she mentioned Matt Nagy once again she said
Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is viewed internally
as a serious candidate.
Nagy will be in Nashville on Sunday with Kansas City
but the NFL rules state there can't be any job discussions.
Tennessee also plans to reach out to several defensive coordinators
including Indianapolis Colts Luana Rumo
Green Bay Packers Jeff Hathley
Jacksonville Jaguars Anthony Campanil
Rams Chris Shula
the Houston Texans Matt Burke and Chargers
Jesse Mentor. So she mentions
right at the top that Matt Nagy
is viewed as a serious
candidate and I just don't
understand. I am going
to be driving this bus. I'm going to be
driving the hate train. It may be
Christmas Eve edition of Locked on Titans
but I'm going to be the Grinch and say
bah humbug to Matt Nagy.
Like I don't
understand whatsoever
outside of oh Matt Nagy
is in Kansas City and had a
relationship with Mike Borganzi because they were co-workers. Outside of that, I do not see any
viable positivity. Let's start. Leadership. What the Tennessee Titans desperately need right now
is a leader to lead the franchise to inspire guys. That is not who Matt Nagy is.
Matt Nagy isn't a culture center. Matt Nagy isn't a big rah-rah leadership guy that's going to inspire
players and going to be able to draw on past experiences to connect with
every player in the locker room and get the best out of them.
That is not who Matt Nagy is.
And on the Kansas City Chiefs Crossover Thursday episode last week,
literally, literally my guy Chris Clark was like,
yeah, I don't think he would be a very good head coach.
I don't think that's a good idea.
It's a guy who sees him every single day.
Number one more than anything, the Titans need a leader for this organization,
a North Star, a set of culture.
That is not Matt Nagy's personality.
That is not who he is.
Okay? And not only that,
but Matt Nagy is an offensive coach
who had a bad offense.
They were 9th in points that first year.
They went 12 and 4.
Matt Nagy is just surviving off the success that he had
that first season in Chicago where they went 12 and 4.
They were 9th and points.
The very next year they were 29th.
The very next year they were 22nd.
The very next year they were 27th.
And then he got fired.
Or he got fired in the middle of the season, but regardless.
Or not the middle of season. He made it through. They were 27.
Yards, they were 21st, 29th, 26th, 24th.
The dude doesn't want to run the ball.
He was 6th and rushing attempts that first year.
And then he went to 27th and 24th.
And then 11th in the final year as they had finally ran out of gas and he got fired.
Not committed to the run.
An offensive coach who had struggling offenses.
And again, everybody wants to say,
Matt Nagy had a winning record in Chicago.
Matt Nagy won games with Mitch Trubisky.
Well, Mitch Trubisky was better in his first year than he ever was after that.
He didn't get better under Matt Nagy.
He fell off under Matt Nagy.
So do you want to put Matt Nagy with Cam Ward?
A guy whose quarterback got worse under him?
Like, his offenses weren't that good.
He isn't committed to running the football.
He didn't improve his young quarterback.
and then people say
oh he's got a winning record
he's got a winning he went 12 and 4 the first year
then he went 8 and 8 8 and 8 and 8 and 6 and 11
he went 12 and 4 the first year
and was awesome and that makes 8 8 and 8 and 6 and 11
look good now
because he had a very good first season
and I'm sorry but I put a major asterisk
on that first season that he had in Chicago
because he had Vic Fangio as his defensive coordinator
They had 36 turnovers on defense, number one in the NFL that year.
Why were they 9th in points but 21st in yards?
Because the offense barely had to go anywhere to score
because the defense was so good and the defense was scoring points
and that gets credit to the offense for points scored.
That defense was outrageous.
Vic Fangio was a head coach level coordinator.
So I'm sorry, the one good year,
that Matt Nagy's whole entire candidacy is based on
in my opinion the credit for that season should actually go to Vic Fongio
not Matt Nagy
Fongio was the best coach on that staff
and that continues a trend of Matt Nagy
not being the top mind on his coaching staff
like right now he was with Kansas City
he wasn't the top offensive mind there
Andy Reid is the top offensive mind there
And then he goes to Chicago.
All right, he's in Chicago.
He's the top offensive mind of terrible offenses.
The outside of the first year, again, 29th in scoring, 29th in yards,
22nd and scoring 26th and yards, 27th in scoring 24th in yards.
Terrible offenses as an offensive coach.
And then he goes back to Kansas City,
and I'm supposed to look at what he's done in Kansas City since he got back
and be like, oh yeah, he's ready for another opportunity.
Kansas City missed the playoffs this year
and you could say Patrick Mahomes
towards ACL they were being beat
by the Chargers and eliminated from the playoffs
before Mahomes injury took place
this offense has fallen off a cliff
the offense has been a problem last year for the Chiefs
when they went to the Super Bowl
their defense was what was most impressive
the year before that when they won it
remember everybody was crying about their offense saying it wasn't good
no wide receivers blah blah because the offense was not productive
and Mahomes is simply carrying this team to some semblance
of success, even though they're not developing any additional answers on the offensive side of the ball.
Why would Matt Nagy's recent time with Kansas City where the offense hasn't been as good as the first couple of years with Patrick Mahomes?
The offense is downgraded.
And Matt Nagy isn't even the top offensive mind to get credit for being the top offensive mind
because he went back to be Andy Reid's sidekick.
Again, like, how can you tell me that year?
in Chicago where we went 12 and 4
and what he's done
in his second stint with Kansas City
and his lack of leadership qualities
is just a personality
how can you look at me and tell me that Matt
Nagy is a great candidate for this head coaching job
and here's the reality if they
pick Matt Nagy
it is simply picking relationship
over talent they care more about
the past relationship with Mike Borganzi
than they do the talent of the coach
that they're hiring and Matt Nagy is just
and not in any
way, shape, or form. What this franchise needs right now. I agree. A coach with experience,
a coach with an offensive slant to work with the quarterback, he's worked with Mahomes,
he works with Cam Ward. I get the argument that people would make for him. But I just think
it's a flimsy, terrible argument. I think when you look deeper at the situation, it's even
worse. And yes, the talent that the Bears had on offense wasn't the best and he had Mitch
Trubisky. But as a coach, you're supposed to elevate and make those players better.
And after that first season where he was carried by Vic Fongio's defense,
he never did that ever.
So I'm sorry, what you would take as evidence of him elevating an offensive bad.
I think he got exactly what that talent would have given him.
And that's bad offensive play for three out of four years.
This guy doesn't elevate offensive talent and get the most out of his guys.
He gets exactly what his guys are going to give him,
which is what the Titans are getting right now.
So leadership, pelts on the wall, the offense,
I'm just so out on Matt Nagy
I could not possibly be more out on Matt Nagy
but the problem is
I don't really like any of the other reported candidates
we got from Diana Rusini either
do want to let you know
that today's episode is brought to you
by prize picks
the holiday season is one of the best times for sports
you got bowl games, you got big basketball matchups
you got playoff pushes
it's all happening at once
and while we're all making choices every day
one of the most fun places to make the right call
is prize picks. Prize picks is the easiest way to get in on daily fantasy. You just pick more or less
on at least two player projections. You lock in your lineup and you're in the game. It's simple, it's fast. It's available in 45 states
including California, Texas, Florida, and Georgia. Prize picks adds an extra layer of excitement to the holiday sports schedule.
You could create your lineup in less than a minute and the app makes the process smooth and intuitive.
They have great features like the early payout feature and the stacks feature where you can use the same quarterback or play
up to three times in the same lineup you could do like more on a quarterback's passing yards,
touchdowns, and rushing yards. Download the prize picks app today. Use the code locked on NFL
to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That's code locked on NFL to get
$50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. It's prize picks. It's good to be right.
Titans fans let's continue today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast
looking at a recent report on the Tennessee Titans coaching search from Diana Rusini
she talked about Matt Nagy as a serious internal candidate and bah humbug to that
but with that being said want to talk about the rest of the list and we heard that
the Tennessee Titans might be looking for youth and that's what's on this list
but another thing that really stands out as this on this list is
it's all defense. Everyone else besides Matt Nagy is defense.
And I think that is a bit of a surprise.
Before I get into it, I do want to thank you for making Locked on Titans
your first listen.
Thank you for making the Locked On Podcast Network,
your first listen in the number one sports podcast network.
Also, happy holidays, Merry Christmas.
All of that to all of you guys, thank you so much
for making Locked on Titans your first listen each and every day, of course,
like I just said.
But with that all being said, we dive into the list.
And number one, Lou Anirumo.
The Colts defensive coordinator.
Yes, the Colts defense that has not had a consistent pass rush all year,
that has completely fallen off a cliff,
that has bad secondary play,
that gave up 47 points to the San Francisco 49ers at home.
Yeah, I'm out on Lou Anirumo.
Not only is Lou Anirumo a good defensive coordinator,
but he's not great.
He's not talented enough to be like, oh, that guy needs to be a head coach.
He's such a brilliant defensive mind, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Like, and I'm sorry, he's an older guy.
And, like, whereas Mike McCarthy is 62 years old,
he has a Super Bowl.
Mike McCarthy has been a head coach in the NFL for, you know,
two decades now, 15 years now.
Luana Rumo's never been a head coach.
So you're telling me that you're going to get a guy
who is going to be 60 years old
by the time next season starts
and this is his first time ever being a head coach
that's the worst of both worlds
you get an older guy who's going to have a harder time
connecting to younger players that you can build around
for the next decade
and he's inexperienced and as a first time head coach
not a chance in the world
get out of here with Lou Anorumo
Matt Burke is the defensive coordinator
of the Houston Texans.
He's not even the top schematic mind in Houston.
That's Damico Ryans.
Demico Ryans is the czar of defense.
He's the play caller.
Why would you go get a defensive coordinator
who's not the top schematic mind
and isn't a play caller?
What are we doing?
No, we're not taking Matt Burke
to division rival defensive coordinators.
Get out of here.
Terrible, terrible choices right there.
What are we doing?
Those are awful.
Now, the four names that I am higher on than those two.
Those are my least favorite names, a part of this report.
But I will tell you this.
Jeff Halfley from the Green Bay Packers,
they've had a real good defense.
He's a guy who has had some, I guess, buzz about him as a candidate.
But it is fair to say that his time in Boston College,
does that really work out?
You know, do you think that he can really do the job?
I don't know.
He's been a head coach before again at Boston College,
so he has some experience with that.
The defense has been fantastic.
Maybe he could have some connections to the Matlifler offensive tree
since he's been there.
He's 46 years old, so he's still, you know, a younger candidate,
but he's not so young.
He's not in his 30.
So Jeff Halfley is an okay candidate.
And remember, not every person on the list is going to get the job.
That's not how it works.
Getting guys in to get information from them.
How would you use our roster?
What areas do you think we need to improve in?
What would be your plan?
What would your offensive coaching staff look like if we hired a defensive guy?
Asking all those questions as a means of getting information
and getting smarter about your team,
that is a good way to do it.
And Halfley is a guy who I would actually like to have in the building
to at least ask those questions.
So Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator, Jeff Halfley
would be my fourth out of the four that I actually am interested in.
Next, Anthony Campanile, the defensive coordinator from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
You do have to wonder how much of their boost in Jacksonville has been from
Leon Cohen, who is a force of personality, you can just tell.
But Campanil is a guy who has really gotten a lot of buzz as of late,
and he's really got the Jacksonville Jaguars defense playing really, really good football.
But another division rival, he's a younger guy, and I just don't know,
I just don't know if the Titan should be taking that kind of risk.
You know what I mean?
Like he's 43, he's not in his 30s or anything like that.
He's had a lot of experience for sure in college in the NFL.
He's coached in Michigan before.
He's coached on offense and defense.
I think that's pretty interesting.
It makes him intriguing as a candidate,
but probably too big of a risk, in my opinion, to go that route.
Two guys who I really like, though,
are Jesse Mentor, the defensive coordinator from the Los Angeles Chargers,
and then Chris Shula, the defensive coordinator from the Los Angeles Rams.
and I think Shula is my favorite out of this list.
Shula is a guy who comes from a strong football family.
You've heard of the Shulas, obviously.
Now, he is 39 years old.
He's a young guy, the youngest of the guys that we've just talked about recently.
He is in his second year being the defensive coordinator for the Rams under Sean McVeigh.
And here's the thing.
He has the personality and the leadership qualities
that make people believe he could be a franchise leading head coach
here in the near future. And I think that sort of reputation, even though Shula is a younger guy,
even though he's a guy who has not had head coaching experience before, out of this list,
he is my favorite guy. I mean, none of these guys other than Matt Nagy, who we already talked about,
none of the guys we've talked about in this segment, have head coaching experience.
So out of this list, Chris Shula is certainly my favorite. Now, that defense has been absolutely fantastic.
He's at the cutting edge of the scheme on defense. He is the top defense of mine. And I know that you may be
Here, oh, family history is coaching in the NFL, 39 years old, never been a head coach before.
This is just Brian Callahan all over again, right?
Well, I think the main difference here is for me that Chris Schula actually calls plays on defense.
He is the play caller.
He is the top offensive mind.
Brian Callahan was not the top offensive mind in Cincinnati.
That was Zach Taylor.
Brian Callahan was not the play caller in Cincinnati.
That was Zach Taylor.
so Chris Shula is the cutting edge defensive mind in Los Angeles
Chris Shula is the defensive play caller in Los Angeles
so he could come over and still be that defensive wizard
and because he comes from Sean McVey's team
I think he also gives you some of that little sprinkle
that you get from Robert Sala who is a candidate I like
where you can get access to that Kyle Shanahan Sean McVey coaching tree
so that you have a better chance of having a good offensive coordinator
because that's always going to be the problem with a defensive-minded head coach
is are you going to be able to get the offensive coordinator right consistently?
And I think having a guy from that Sean McVey tree, that Kyle Shanahan tree,
I think that does give you a better opportunity to fill that offensive coordinator position.
So I think Chris Shula is the number one guy on my list.
Jesse Minter is a spicy candidate,
defensive coordinator again for the Los Angeles Chargers.
The defense has been pretty good this year for the Chargers.
been a little up and down at times,
but Mentor is truly, truly, truly a cutting-edge defense of mind.
He is at the forefront of defensive scheme in the NFL.
He's had a lot of experience.
He's a Jim Harbaugh guy, so he's had a good opportunity
to see what real leadership and truly leading a professional football team looks like.
Harball is at the top of the list when it comes to professionalism
with running an NFL unit and what it's supposed to look like.
So I think having that example to look up to could be very helpful for Jesse Mentor.
overall, I don't really like this list.
This is not, where is the offense?
Where is the guy who's going to help Cam Ward?
And if the Titans
basically look at all defensive guys
and then they hire Matt Nagy and say
oh, we wanted somebody who could work with Cam Ward,
I'm going to be pissed.
All right?
You can't say that you want somebody
who wants to work with Cam Ward
and then only be interested in one offensive coach.
But here's the reality.
Here's what we have to remember.
And here's maybe the most important point at this point after going through the list.
This is only Diana Rusini.
And there are a lot of you who point out Rusini has had some else on some reports in recent memory.
Now, I don't keep track of every big time now.
Do that.
You know what I mean?
I'm not out there charting whether Diana Ruhrush.
or see any scoops are all right or wrong.
But she's had her fair share of misses.
And I don't think that she's had good sources inside the building since Vrable left.
And I think, again, you've got to take this list with a grain of salt.
We don't know that these are the actual candidates.
We don't know that this is the actual list.
Last year, we heard all kinds of crazy talk about, you know,
this guy's the front runner and this, and they didn't even get a second interview.
So until we hear the official interview list from the Titans,
It's okay to not be too panicked by any single report.
But I will tell you this, Matt Nagy's name has come up in every single report
from ESPN to Diana Rusini to any report that you want to get from many different sources.
Matt Nagy's name's always brought up, so that is concerning to me.
But with that being said, pro bowl rosters were announced.
Two Tennessee Titans made the Pro Bowl,
and one of them, maybe even both of them, should be on the All-Pro team as well.
Titans fans. Let's continue and cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about saying no to Matt Nagy. God, I'm going to be so angry.
Matt and Aggie is hired as the head coach.
We talked about the rest of the names on the list in the recent report
and why they're not all that inspiring to me either.
But now I want to talk about some recent news.
Two Titans make the Pro Bowl.
Both of them I think should probably make the All-Pro team.
Before we dive in, thanks again for making Lockdown Titan Jew at first.
Listen.
Thank you for making the Lockdown Podcast Network,
the number one sports podcast network.
But Jeffrey Simmons made the Pro Bowl.
No surprise, he should.
I've said it online.
I made some short content recently
showing Jeffrey Simmons
domination talking about it
Jeffrey Simmons
is the
best interior defensive lineman
in the NFL this year, full stop.
Period. Period.
He's number one
amongst interior defensive linemen in sacks with 9.
He's number 2
among interior defensive linemen
and tackles for loss with 16.
He's first in pressure rate.
He's got the highest
grade in pass rush.
on pro football focus amongst the Terrier defensive lineman with a 90.9.
He is a dominant force out on the field.
Absolute dominant force.
And I know, I know, I know.
The Titans are going to be 3 and 14.
They're not very good.
But that shouldn't take away from how absolutely insane
Jeffrey Simmons has been this year.
And mind you, all of that production is in 13.
13 games. Not 16. Not 15.
Like, think about it.
Dude has been absolutely dominant every game making massive plays,
two force fumbles, batting down passes at the line of scrimmage even when he doesn't get there.
And all the while, he is the guy who, how many players on the Titans,
do you think that the defensive coordinator or the offensive coordinator says,
we got a game playing around that guy?
It ain't Arden Key and Jihad Ward.
It ain't Cody Barton.
It ain't Amani Hooker or Daryl Baker Jr.
or Jalen Armar Davis.
It's Jeffrey Simmons.
The entire plan every week is to stop Jeffrey Simmons.
And they can't.
And they can't.
Even with the lack of helper,
imagine if he had an NFL starting edge rusher next to him.
Imagine.
You know?
Like, he is just absolutely insane.
He has been incredible this year.
Again, not only did he make the Pro Bowl,
but he should absolutely be the first team all pro in the NFL,
full stop, point blank period.
Doesn't matter how you want to cut it.
He should be the top.
Interior defensive linemen in the NFL, all pro first team.
I don't care that the Titans haven't won a lot of games.
He is by far the most dominant.
If you watch him play on a week-to-week basis,
it is not only impressive, it's even more impressive
with the lack of help around him
and the performance of the Titans defense.
Like, it's just insane.
And not only that,
but I need Jeffrey Simmons to get that first team All-Pro
because he deserves it.
Not just on the field, off the field.
What he's done in the community,
the player and the person that he's become for this team,
the leader that he became this year
using his voice to speak up and say
this isn't right, we got to get better
challenging people and practice
on the other side of the ball,
expecting more, demanding more,
criticizing his teammates in public.
Jeffrey Simmons has said
this is not good enough and I have to do more.
I have to physically
spiritually, emotionally
drag this team
back to where we have to go.
Now that Cam Ward's here
and I feel like I have real help to do it,
I'm putting my all into it.
Jeffrey Simmons has given everything to the Tennessee Titans
and the Tennessee Titans fans this year.
And he has lived up and truly become this year,
truly become not only just the player,
but the person that he always dreamed that he could be,
I guarantee it.
And, you know, his house is getting broken into.
And he's like, I'm still smiling.
They didn't win.
I'm still smiling.
I didn't lose nothing.
Like, the adversity of the team not being good.
What he's going through with that.
He dropped the weight before the season, remember?
And he is just a truly different person,
different dedicated level of person this year.
And he deserves all of the success that he's getting.
He should make the Pro Bowl.
He should be first team All-Pro.
And I literally can't hear anything else about it.
He is the best interior defensive lineman in the entire league.
It's not close.
It's not close.
So that's all I have to say about,
that. Now, he wasn't alone. Jim D.K.
also made the Pro Bowl as the returner in the AFC, and I think
DK should also be the All-Pro as well. Now, the Patriots have a really good
returner. Um, Marcus Jones. Is that his name, Jones? Is his name Marcus Jones, I believe?
Very good returner has been awesome this year. No doubt about it. But Jim D.K.
I mean, he should have another punt return touchdown on top of the two that he already has.
He's one of the first rookies.
There's only like four rookies in the last 25 years
that have had four receiving touchdowns and two return touchdowns,
and he's one of them.
Like, he has had a historic season as a returner.
He's added as a wide receiver.
Jim, look, there are two all-pro spots.
He may not get the first team all-pro spot,
but Jim D.K. definitely needs to get at minimum second-team all-pro as the returner
because he has been fantastic, a revelation,
And I got to tell you, seeing Bones Fossil get up in front of the team,
the Titans media team put out a video showing when they announced the Pro Bowl stuff
to the team in the team meeting.
And him announcing Chim D.K. getting the spot was just,
it was awesome.
They got to bring Bones Fossil back.
And that's why I like Mike McCarthy as my number one option for head coach
because he had Bones Fossil on his coaching staff in Dallas
before he got let go.
So, keep bones fossil around.
Honestly, I think DeNard Wilson might even stay around if Mike McCarthy gets hired.
I think that would be a great idea.
I'm here for it.
I'm not going to pound the table for it, but I'm not against it either.
You know what I mean?
They just need better offensive coaching and a more professional leader.
But with that being said,
congrats to Chim DK.
Congrats to Jeffrey Simmons on the Pro Bowl and hopefully an all-pro selection as well.
But I'm going to be back with you guys tomorrow on Christmas
