The Tennessee Titans can be Super Bowl contenders, but they need a few things to go right.
I'll tell you what they are on today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
You are locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked on podcast
network, your team every day. Welcome to the Locked On Podcast Network. Your team, every day.
Welcome to the Locked On Titans Podcast.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland, Titans fans.
It's a mailbag episode of the Locked On Titans Podcast today.
I'm answering your questions that you sent to me.
Got some good ones here for you as well.
Can the Titans be Super Bowl contenders?
What has to go right?
We'll talk about the best five offensive line
and which Titans legend would I build around?
I'm going to answer all of that.
Before I get into it, though,
I do want to thank you for making the Locked on Titans podcast
your first listen each and every day,
Monday through Friday,
Tennessee Titans content all year round,
always for free.
Make sure you get subscribed, stay subscribed.
It's your team every day here on the Locked on Titans podcast.
Shout out to my everydayers out there tuning in Monday through Friday.
Couldn't do it without you guys.
Thank you so much for tuning in all week long.
And if you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one.
I'm going to have another mailbag episode for you guys tomorrow answering more of these
fantastic questions that you guys sent to me on Twitter,
at TicTacTitans.
But we're going to cap off the week with a preview of OTAs over the weekend.
The entire team is involved, so very important that a few of these guys get off to a good start.
We'll talk about some different things there.
But today, your question, starting with a great one about the Titans being Super Bowl contenders.
Question comes from B Chicken.
He says, even if it's a long shot, the longest long shot in the world,
what would we need to be Super Bowl contenders this year?
And listen, B Chicken, I don't think it's the longest long shot in the world.
I don't care what the betting odds say.
I still think it's a long shot, but it's not the longest long shot in the world. I don't care what the betting odds say. I still
think it's a long shot, but it's not the longest long shot in the world by any means. Here's the
reality. Will Levis has to be a stud. There is nothing more important than that. If the Titans
want to be true Super Bowl contenders this year, next year, they need Will Levis to work out.
That's all that matters is that Will Levis ascends to being one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL.
That's the number one thing that needs to happen.
Number two, the Bill Callahan magic must work.
JC Latham needs to be a beast right away.
They need to get the most out of Nicholas Petit Ferrer,
get the best out of Peter Skowronski.
Like, the only way that Will Levis can be what he needs to be
is if the offensive line is better than what the base level of expectation would be.
Like, with everything, there's a floor, floor down here, there's a ceiling up here,
and then there's the middle range, which is kind of the most general outcome
that could happen, and the Titans need to be above that general outcome
when it comes to the offensive line.
So that has to happen.
And then the last thing is,
Devondre Sweat.
Right?
I mean, if Devondre Sweat can be Dexter Lawrence,
and him and Jeffrey Simmons can just absolutely wreck shop
in the middle of defenses,
that's going to create easy turnovers for the secondary.
It's going to make it easier on the bad linebacker group that the Titans have.
It's going to make life easier for Arden Key and Harold Landry on the outsides.
Like, if Devondre Sweat can hit in year one,
with Will Levis turning into a top-ten quarterback,
and Bill Callahan making that offensive line actually better than what we expect,
then the Titans can absolutely be far better than what we all have
as kind of the expected outcome.
When you talk about, you know, making the playoffs,
like I said earlier, 9-8 is kind of my record prediction.
If all three of those things happen at the same time,
Tavondre Sweat's an all-pro level player from day one,
Bill Callahan works his magic with the O-line,
and Will Levis is a top-ten quarterback.
The Titans could compete for a Super Bowl this year.
Again, long shot, but that's what it would take.
Josh Murbitz, my god Josh, says,
What is the Titans' floor and what is the ceiling after the draft?
Well, I've talked about this quite a bit since we've got through the draft.
The floor is seven wins for me.
The ceiling right now is ten wins. So that's
how I feel about the Titans right now.
Gumbungus says,
do you believe in Rand Carthon after this
draft? I know the sweat pick was
not the best, but do you still believe in him
as our GM? Yes.
Yes, Gumbungus. I do
believe in Rand Carthon. People wanted to
people like to take what you
say sometimes and make it like they tell themselves in their head
what your opinion means and what it means about other opinions.
Just because I didn't like the Devondre Sweat pick doesn't mean that I'm out on Rancar Thawne.
I loved almost every other move the Titans have made this offseason.
A little questionable on the Kenneth Murray deal.
Didn't really love the Devondre sweat pick,
as I've talked about a ton.
But two moves out of the litany of moves
that the Titans have made so far
isn't going to spoil me on Rancar Thon.
I think Rancar Thon is going to be a good GM.
It could be a great GM.
That doesn't mean that he's never going to make
any kind of mistake and that every signing
and every draft pick is going to be incredible.
We have to recalibrate our thoughts.
Do you think that Howie Roseman for the Eagles has made all great moves in his tenure?
Do you think that Brett Veach of the Kansas City Chiefs
has never made a bad signing or a bad pick?
Like, he traded for Kadarius Toney,
the guy who everybody thinks is the best GM in the NFL right now.
So, and look at San Francisco and what they built.
They traded up and got Trey Lance.
So, even the best GMs in the NFL make bad picks,
have signings that don't work out.
So, it's about getting it right the majority of the time.
That's the best that you can do.
You can't ask for perfection from a general manager.
That's never going to happen.
Gabriel Pilcher says,
Are you concerned Rand might overdraft someone if they're the guy he really wanted?
Well, I'm not concerned that Rand would, because overdraft,
think about the term overdraft.
When we think about overdrafting,
that's based on consensus draft boards from the media, right?
Like that's what, when we think overdraft, underdraft,
it's all based on the consensus board done by our favorite media draft people.
So when you think overdraft, yes, it's a concern,
but it's only a concern if it's proven that Rand Carthon doesn't select the right guys.
If the whole world thinks that Rand Carthon overdrafted
Tavondre Sweat, for example, based on the consensus boards,
that's great.
But if Tavondre Sweat turns out to be awesome,
then why would I question Rand Carthon taking the guys that he wants?
Really what it comes down to is,
can Rand pick the right guys in the draft?
I don't care where they got drafted at the end of the day.
So, we need more information before there's any reason to be concerned.
Dmoney says,
if you could be the Titans GM and change, add, delete one move
the team has made this offseason,
what would it be?
Love your content, man.
Listen to the show every day for a year now.
Appreciate that, D-Money.
Really, really do.
For me, obviously, if I could change one move,
add, delete, whatever,
I would change the Devondre sweat pick.
I would change that to either...
I mean, there's so many guys that I was interested in at that spot.
Cooper Djean.
Kool-Aid McKinstry, Adonai Mitchell.
Like, I would have taken any of those three players
over to Vondre Sweat, and I would have gotten
McKinley Jackson or Fabian Lovett way later in the draft
to be my nose tackle.
So that is number one at the top of my list
of what I would change.
But I'm not the Titans GM.
So let's just hope that it works out.
Finally, RTR Titans Mavs Fanatic says,
with all the talk of the Titans adding an analytics division to the staff,
where do you see that in the addition they made in the roster,
draft and free agency?
Well, I can't go through every single move
and talk about the analytical aspects of the move,
but I would point you to Calvin Ridley.
The Titans, if you look at separation grade
and separation ability last year,
were one of the worst wide receiver groups in the league.
So what do the Titans do?
They go out and get somebody who, based on the data,
is a fantastic separator.
All right?
With great speed on the field,
who's able to get open right away, and that fits
perfectly within the Titans
kind of setup that they had already.
They had physical guys, contested catch
situation, Traylon Burks is a
gadget guy, but now you add somebody
who's different analytically in Calvin Ridley
who's more of a separation guy and a
route runner and all of that. So, that's
one thing that I would point out. I think the analytics
led them to Calvin Ridley,
but maybe it was so obvious that they were there anyways,
but just saying,
I think that would have an impact because analytically speaking,
he fits well with what the Titans have already is kind of a different
skillset,
a varying skillset,
which I think is important in your wide receiver group.
But with that being said,
we are going to move on to more of your questions who are going to be the top five offensive linemen on this team?
Who's the best wide receiver on this team?
I'm going to give you guys my answer to that.
Before I do that,
I do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you

It's your team every day.
Here on the Locked on Titans podcast.
Diving back into these questions,
we looked at some big picture questions to start.
Super Bowl contention, Rancar Thon, all that stuff.
Now we're going to talk more about individual players.
And the first question is from 2G Harley.
And he says,
the Titans have said Raidens is a guard and NPF is a tackle.
Who are your best five offensive linemen and what positions?
Well, JC Latham, Peter Skowronski, and Cushenberry
are a lock.
Okay, that's the top three.
With Latham at left tackle,
Pete at left guard, and Cush at center, obviously.
But that leaves Radins and NPF.
And I'll be honest with you.
I think the best five offensive linemen are the top three we just mentioned,
Latham, Skowronski, Cush, and Berry.
But I think it's Radins and Brunskill next.
And that's tough because, like you said,
the Titans have said they think Radins is better at guard.
Daniel Brunskill is a guard.
People always try to move him to center, tackle, all this stuff.
Maybe center, but he is not a tackle.
Daniel Brunskill is a guard in the NFL.
I mean, stop it.
Okay?
This isn't maddening.
You can't just go in and edit people's position
and their overall rating doesn't change.
And you're like, oh, I'll play him there.
That doesn't work in the real NFL like that.
Okay?
So, Radins and Brunskill are both guards.
And they need a tackle.
So, you could say best five offensive linemen,
but I don't think that's possible because they're going to play Radins at guard.
I think ultimately the Titans have Latham at left tackle,
Peter Skowronski at left guard,
Cushenberry at center,
Dylan Radins at right guard, and NPF at left tackle, Peter Skowronski at left guard, Cushenberry at center, Dylan Radins at right guard,
and NPF at right tackle.
That's what I think the opening day starting lineup looks like
with Daniel Brunskill as the swing interior offensive lineman
that could potentially play all three spots.
That's what I think they go with.
Is that their best five?
No.
To me, it's four out of five because Brunskill is one of the best five.
But there's no good way to put that into place
when you have Dylan Radins supposedly being a guard,
which is what they've said.
Eric Callahan, as I always call you,
who's the best wide receiver on the Titans roster?
This may be controversial to some, but to me, it's Calvin Ridley.
Calvin Ridley is the highest paid wide receiver on the Titans roster.
Calvin Ridley is the best wide receiver on the Titans roster to me.
DeAndre Hopkins, very good player.
Very, very good player.
Still a high level number two in the NFL, okay?
But Calvin Ridley has the talent and the youth to be a number one right now, okay?
So to me, it's Calvin Ridley.
And I think the payment of what Calvin Ridley got
and what DeAndre Hopkins' situation was last year,
I think that tells you all you need to know.
It's Calvin Ridley.
Miles G.
Miles, my guy.
Who are you most excited to see play when the season starts?
And do you think we will have any all-pro players?
If so, who?
I'm going to go with Jeffrey Simmons.
I think if Simmons is healthy and unlocked in this defense,
Jeffrey Simmons is going to explode.
Look, last year they shut him down early.
People want to use last year against him.
It was obvious they shut Jeffrey Simmons down early
because the season was over.
They were out of playoff contention.
He was dealing with an injury.
There was no reason to run your $100 million player
into the ground on a bunch of games that didn't matter.
All right?
So I think Simmons could have played if he needed to last year,
but because the team was out of the playoffs, they didn't do it.
They shut him down.
So I think Jeffrey Simmons can be an all-pro player.
I also think LeJarius Sneed can be an all-pro player this year.
As for who I'm most excited to watch, it's Will Levis.
I mean, how could I give you any other answer?
I'm excited to see Will Levis with better offensive line play
and a much better wide receiver group.
Let's see what the guys really got.
I'm super excited.
But also, I'm really excited to watch Peter Skowronski.
I've been a big Peter Skowronski guy from day one.
Last year, like, I was the leader of the alt cult this year,
but last year, I was banging the drum all offseason for Peter Skowronski.
That's who I wanted the Titans to take.
I liked Paris Johnson as well,
but I thought he would probably be gone by the time the Titans pick.
Peter Skowronski was the guy that I really liked last year,
and I'm excited to watch him improve.
Without a midseason emergency surgery
and the weight that he looks like he's put on, I can't wait. So that's what I'm excited to watch him improve without a mid-season emergency surgery and the weight that
he looks like he's put on. I can't wait. So that's what I'm excited for. Kenneth, New Jersey Titans
fan said, seeing how the draft went, do you think the Titans could have traded back and still picked
up Latham? No, I don't. I don't actually. With all the reporting that's come out, I do believe
the text messages Rand Carthon got after hearing more reports of the same thing,
seeing other teams in their draft and their reaction to Latham getting picked,
I don't think the Titans would have been able to trade back
and still get J.C. Latham.
I guess if they traded back one pick, then maybe, but no.
No, no, no, I don't think so.
Andrew Rennie says, what would T-Sweat have to do to prove to you
he was worth the pick at 38?
Is there anything he could do to prove he is worth the pick?
Well, of course there's something he could do to prove he's worth the pick.
I mean, if the guy goes out and goes nuts,
how would I say he's not worth the pick?
You know what I mean?
I'm going to keep it honest for you guys.
You hate my honesty when it's negativity,
but I'm going to be honest here.
Yeah, I mean, he needs to play, you know, 50% of snaps,
three or four sacks, you know, seven or eight tackles for loss.
Just make an impact consistently.
I'm worried about the conditioning.
I'm worried about the off-field benefiting the on-field.
So it's really about consistency with the rookie defensive tackle.
Who would Vrabel have picked at number seven?
JC Latham. That's the funny part. JC Latham and Tavondre Sweat are Vrabel style picks. We want to
be big, physical, powerful, blah, blah, blah. So I found that kind of interesting. Ray Thompson said,
so was just curious on if you feel like the wide receiver out of Tulane, Jaquan Jackson,
rookie six-round pick, is already the leader to be kickoff
and punt returner. A lot of that is coming
out that they like him for his return abilities.
Yeah, 100%. I think
he is the leader in the clubhouse,
the favorite right now to be the kickoff and
punt returner for this team. And
Mr. Brando says, since our top
four corner spots are accounted for,
Sneed, Cheeto,
Roger, Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
Do you think Caleb Farley could transition over to safety?
Guys, so Mr. Brando, I don't mean to be rude when I say this,
but like I said with Daniel Brunskill before,
stop this Caleb Farley at safety conversation.
Like, give it up.
You can't just move a guy's position when they're not good enough.
Caleb Farley struggles in space.
Caleb Farley is not good out on an island.
Okay?
Putting him in space more as a safety
just would be the opposite of helping him.
Caleb Farley transitioned from wide receiver to cornerback
either when he came from high school to college
or after his first year of college,
he's a guy who needs more experience at cornerback.
Switching positions of him again
would just absolutely be a detriment to him at all.
If there's any chance that Caleb Farley is a salvageable NFL player,
it's at cornerback where his length and his straight line speed
give him the traits that
you need at that position. He is not a safety. That would be the total opposite of what fits
his skill set. And again, Mr. Brando, thank you so much for the question. I don't mean to be crass
at you and your question. I just get asked this so often by people and it's just like,
no, it wouldn't make any sense at all. He needs to be a cornerback. And if he's not a cornerback, I just get asked this so often by people, and it's just like, no.
It wouldn't make any sense at all.
He needs to be a cornerback, and if he's not a cornerback, he's not an NFL player. And we just have to accept those realities.
That's just what it is.
But with that being said, got some fun questions to answer.
Why do the Titans owner have different titles than other owners?
That's a good question.
Titans legend, which one would I build around? Can't wait to dive
into that with you guys. Before we do.
Titans fans, let's cap off today's part one edition of the mailbag episodes I have for you this week.
Tomorrow, I'm going to answer more of your guys' questions.
You sent in some fantastic ones.
A lot of Will Levis questions tomorrow.
Is he a franchise quarterback?
Can't wait to talk about that.
And then my last show of the week will be a preview of this weekend's OTAs
with the full team.
But more questions to answer from you guys now.
We've got some excellent ones about Titans legends and Titans ownership.
Excited to dive into that.
Colin Light says,
name one non-quarterback, non-quarterback Titans legend
that can come in and solidify a 10-win season.
Bonus question.
If you have time, build your offense and defense Titans legends.
I don't have time for that.
But what I will say here is, Colin,
if I had one Titans legend to add to this team, that's not a quarterback.
I'm going to go with Javon curse. I'm going to take curse. I'm going to put them opposite of
Harold Landry and we are just absolutely going to wreck shop up front. You could go offensive
line too. You could go like Bruce Matthews or Michael Roos or, you know, David Stewart. Um,
heck I would even consider maybe bringing back Jack Conklin,
the young version of Jack Conklin for this team.
But yeah, I'm going to go with Javon Curse.
That's going to be my answer here because I think the Titans,
if the Titans had a top tier, you know, 20-sat capable player
and Harold Landry was their second best edge rusher
and Arden Key was their third best edge rusher
and then you have Jeffrey Simmons on the inside, that would just be absolutely nuts. So give me the freak. and Harold Landry was their second best edge rusher, and Arden Key was their third best edge rusher,
and then you have Jeffrey Simmons on the inside.
That would just be absolutely nuts.
So give me the freak.
McKnight58 says,
who's your top three personalities ever with the Titans?
For a team that's lacked swagger most of its existence,
I'd be interested to know who's your top three.
Mine, Taylor LeJuan, Cortland Finnegan, Keith Bullitt.
Okay, so really, I think you got a good list there.
I'm going to avoid the people you put on your list.
Okay, I'm not, those are good answers.
I'm not going to reuse them though.
Keith Bullitt, my favorite linebacker ever.
So obviously I would have him in there. But number one,
Steve McNair, throwing the hooks,
running around the field, his style
of play. He just had a fun
personality that made the Titans fun.
I would also say
let's go with
man, it's hard to leave out like
Cortland Finnegan and Keith Bullitt
because there's just not a lot of great options.
CJ 2K, I'll go with Chris Johnson.
The dancing in the end zone, the style of play, the speed,
had a ton of swagger, had the dreads coming out.
Just was awesome.
I just loved Chris Johnson.
That was a good time.
And I'll say,
come on, we got to say it, man.
A.J. Brown.
I mean, come on.
A.J. Brown, it didn't go well, and he left so early, so I can't answer.
But other than Kevin Byard, A.J. Brown is like my favorite Titan ever, man.
Like, watching him play football, I couldn't believe my eyes
that this guy was on the Titans.
It's like nothing we'd ever had before.
But before I start crying, and maybe some of you guys who took it hard to start crying,
we will move on.
Cody Weath.
Always sending in good questions, Cody. Thank you.
Why is it when people talk about other franchises like the Cowboys or the Raiders,
Jerry Jones is the owner?
Mark Davis is the owner.
When they talk about the Titans, Amy Adams Strunk is the controlling owner. What's the difference?
Well, the difference is Amy Adams Strunk is the controlling owner. So Jerry Jones bought the
Cowboys. Mark Davis was given the Raiders by his father, Al Davis. And to my knowledge, there aren't other Davis children.
I don't know that for sure,
but Mark Davis was given the team.
Like it wasn't...
So I would give you an example of my other favorite team, the Lakers.
Jeannie Buss is the controlling owner of the Lakers.
But technically, her other siblings own the team just as much as she does.
You know, she is just the child who runs the organization on a day-to-day basis.
It's the same with Amy Adams Strunk.
She has a brother, okay?
So while she is the controlling owner,
the person who's in charge of the franchise,
she's not the sole owner of the team like Jerry Jones is or like Mark Davis is.
She technically shares ownership with her sibling,
but she is just the one in control.
So she is the controlling owner because there are multiple owners.
I hope that makes sense, Cody,
and maybe other people who have that question learn from that too.
And then finally, Paul Harp says,
For the safety position,
that too. And then finally, Paul Harp says,
for the safety position, can you describe the difference in play styles between free safety and strong safety? How do they rotate within
a game, scheme? Love the content. Thanks, Paul. So, this is
an antiquated question, in my opinion, Paul. This answer
does not apply as often
to the modern day NFL.
So in the NFL nowadays, safeties are much more versatile.
You can't afford to have a strong safety and a free safety
that are totally different playing types.
For most teams and most schemes in the NFL now,
safeties have to be interchangeable.
Like Kevin Byard and Imani Hooker.
They could both come down and play in the box.
They could both play back deep.
They could both play man coverage.
Like you need your safeties to be interchangeable to a point
in most schemes in the NFL.
Now what you're talking about, I would imagine,
it would make a lot more sense 10 years ago.
Think about the Legion of Boom Seahawks.
You had Earl Thomas in the back end,
and Cam Chancellor is the strong
safety. So Earl Thomas, free safety.
Cam Chancellor, strong safety.
In those situations,
the free safety would be more
of a coverage guy. He would be
a speedier guy. He would
be a guy who can roam the back end. Think about
like a center fielder in baseball.
That's what you would be getting from a traditional
free safety. Think about an Ed Reed type
for example.
That guy would need to be more
rangy, sideline to sideline
speed, have better coverage
instincts, have better ball
skills as well, can help out the
cornerbacks back deep. That's what you would get with
that guy. And then your strong safety
think of like a Cam Chancellor type.
Think about Bob Sanders from the Colts.
Think about Chris Hope for the Titans.
Think about Michael Griffin as like a pure free safety
who played in the back end.
You know what I mean?
So there's some Titans examples for you.
Blaine Bishop was a strong safety.
So the strong safety would be a guy who comes down into the box,
plays closer to the line of scrimmage.
You want him coming forward, not backward,
typically not as good at coverage,
not as quick as the free safety,
but a stronger, more physical player
who can play in the run,
who can play in the box,
who can blitz a little bit.
Just a more physical guy who may not have the pure athleticism
that your free safety. Again,
this isn't as common anymore in today's NFL, that style of play and those kind of roles. It's like
gender roles in America. You know what I mean? Women don't just do the traditional old stuff
anymore. That's not the way life is these days. Well, life is evolved in the NFL for safeties too.
not the way life is these days.
Well, life is evolved in the NFL for safeties too. You don't just have
these very rigid role sets.
Now things are more intertwined.
They're shared. There's more balance.
That is a philosophical
answer about
the NFL today compared
to yesteryear, but hopefully
that answered for you there, Paul, and
anybody else who had that question, hopefully that is
a good enough explanation. Hoping that all made sense for you guys, but with that being said, that is going to do it for you there, Paul, and anybody else who had that question. Hopefully that is a good enough explanation.
Hoping that all made sense for you guys.
But with that being said, that is going to do it for me today, folks.
I'm going to be back with you guys tomorrow
answering more of your mailbag questions.
Very excited to dive into those.
But as always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland,
and this was Locked on Titans.
