Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans T'Vondre Sweat was NERVOUS, O-Line Performs 'Top to Bottom' & Backer Breakouts
Episode Date: August 11, 2024The Tennessee Titans won their first preseason game of the year against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday, but rookie T'Vondre Sweat was rather quiet. Head coach Brian Callahan admitted the rookie w...as nervous, but also correctly pointed out some good things as well. Sweat should only get better going forward. Next, the offensive line was surprisingly solid in the victory and this is only their first attempt with a brand new crew. Finally, the linebackers all were incredible for the Titans, but the pass rush needs to do it's part as well as the season continues.GET SUBSCRIBED for year round Tennessee Titans film content!!Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitansTicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=ascFollow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitansFollow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPodSubscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videosFor your next listen, check out the Locked On Fantasy Football podcast. Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan said rookie Tavondre Sweat was nervous against the 49ers.
But that doesn't mean that it was all bad.
I'll break down the rookie's performance on today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.

On today's show, we're going to talk about the performance
of Tavondre Sweat and Brian Callahan.
Talked about it as well, saying that Sweat was nervous,
but doesn't mean it was all bad.
Also, this Titans offensive line
looked very much improved,
at least with the first team.
So we'll go over the individual performances there.
Also, the linebackers were the breakouts
in the game on Saturday night,
but that isn't all good either.
So I'll explain all that before I get into it.
Do want to thank you guys for making the Locked on Titans podcast

Throw a Titan up down in the chat.
With all that being said, let's talk about Tavondre Sweat.
Again, I want to start with a quote from Titans head coach Brian Callahan
talking about Sweat on Sunday.
He said, quote, he was nervous to start the game.
He kind of settled in a bit as it went on.
He was active.
Didn't make any splash plays or anything, but kind of rotated him through,
and it was good for him to feel that everybody in the NFL is big and strong,
and he's going to have to do a lot of things technically that need to get improved.
So that part was good for him.
It was a good learning experience for him.
You still felt him.
He still took up double teams.
He was still disrupting the line of scrimmage.
And he held the point of attack.
And that was all good things to see.
Positive first start.
And look, it would be easy to get up here and talk about, you know,
how Sweat didn't make a huge impact
because quite honestly, it was a quiet game. You look at the pro football focus grades,
he got a 48.5, which was 29th out of 32 people. But I want to point out that five of the 12 plays
that he was out there, he got a double team. So there were some people that were just trying to argue
that his performance was good because of the amount of double teams.
Five of 12, that's not every play,
but basically half of the plays that he was out there,
he was getting double teamed.
And when you think about how that translates to the regular season
and when you have a Jeffrey Simmons and you have a Harold Landry next to him,
well, obviously you can't double team everybody.
And in my opinion, and I've been saying this quite a bit since the game,
if you had to choose between double teaming a two-time All-Pro,
$100 million player in Jeffrey Simmons,
or double teaming a rookie second rounder,
you're probably going to double team Jeffrey Simmons,
which is going to give Tavondre Sweat even more opportunities to get one-on-ones.
And we know from what we've seen in training camp so far,
or reported in training camp so far at least,
that he should be able to win a good majority of those one-on-one reps.
Now, we do have to be honest.
There were some where he lost one-on-one reps.
He was just one-on-one, and he simply did not beat his man.
But there were other situations, which I will point out,
where he did beat his man, and he got good push into the backfield
and drove his man five yards deep.
And also, I would say that based on what I've seen so far,
San Francisco ran away from Tavondre Sweat quite a bit.
So if you're not on the front side of the play, you're not play side,
we're obviously not going to double team you there.
So obviously, I'm somebody who has been critical of the Tavondre Sweat draft pick, but I just don't think that you look at preseason
game one and use that as an opportunity to act like, you know, we should be concerned or we
should be worried about Tavondre Sweat whatsoever. He did look a little bit tired at the end of that
first drive by San Francisco, but this is what we should expect. It's not just like you play two weeks of training camp
and then all of a sudden you're going to be in perfect shape.
Talk about the difference between practice shape and game shape.
Now, J.C. Latham, Titans left tackle,
did say that the Titans have a good habit of practicing faster in practice
than the games actually go, which is a great practice habit
because then obviously you're going to be more prepared
for the speed of the game. But if we're going to say that Tavondre Sweat deserves time
to get into shape, then you have to give him a game in the preseason as well.
So while I would have wanted to see more, I'm not going to sit here and act like
we shouldn't have seen more. As Brian Callahan said it himself, no splash plays.
The reports in training camp of what Sweat has been doing,
we didn't get a glimpse of that
on Saturday night.
And I think it's fair to say
that you were hoping to see a glimpse
of that greatness that we've heard about
in practice.
You were hoping to at least see a flash of that.
Like, I just wanted a little bit to see it,
like the rep from J.C. Latham on the Will Levis big hit at the goal line.
Like, Latham dominated on that rep the same way that you expected him to do
after watching his tape in college.
I wanted to see something out there, and there wasn't really,
there's not really anything to, like, latch on to in terms of,
hey, that was a big play.
Like, that was a good play even.
So I get that, you know, it's okay to be slightly disappointed
and want to see more.
But everything that we just talked about, not having Jeff,
not having Landry out there, all the splash plays that we hear about
in practice, he does have those guys next to him.
So to me, again, I think it's completely fair if you're a Tennessee Titans fan
and you say, hey, I would have liked to see something,
but also I'm not insanely disappointed at the same time.
Like, I know that nowadays culture, especially in sports coverage,
you're not allowed to have nuance and you're not allowed to kind of be in the middle of things.
You either got to have, you know, this hot take here or defend people in a crazy way here. But I think the only logical reaction to Sweat's performance last night is,
hey, I would have liked to have seen something, but it doesn't mean that everything that we've
heard so far was wrong. And I think that I've seen enough, enough people go both ways of pretending
like it was a good performance from Sweat. and then also people who are maybe trying to take it too far the other way as well.
So it's one preseason game for the rookie
without most of the important people to him most,
the defensive line out there.
So, and also the final point that I want to make here is
that Devondre Sweat is still a rookie.
I understand we've all gotten really high off the training camp reports.
And I'm not telling you that you shouldn't be very excited.
I have admitted my excitement.
I am excited about watching Devondre Sweat after what we've heard he's been doing in
Titans training camp.
How could you not be?
So I get if you were excited and then didn't really, you know, get to feel that excitement last night.
But you got to keep some things in mind.
Even though everyone is hyping Tavondre Sweatup, he is still a rookie.
Simmons and Landry aren't out there.
And it was his first preseason game ever.
So just saying it's okay to be in the middle.
That's all I'll say there.
But we got to talk about this Tennessee Titans offensive line
because according to Brian Callahan, they performed well from top to bottom.
Before we get into that, though, I do want to let you guys know
that today's episode is brought to you by LinkedIn Jobs.

Titans fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about Tavondre Sweat and why it's okay to be in the middle on it.
You don't got to be to one extreme or the other.
Now I want to talk about this offensive line. Before I do that, I do want to let you guys know,
tomorrow, we're going to be looking at the big questions for the Titans going into next week.
We're going to look at some of the more film-related topics
that I want to get into as well as I break down the film
over the next 24 hours or so.
Going to bring all of that knowledge to you guys.
And then on Tuesday night show, Wednesday morning,
for my podcast crowd, my commuters out there in the AM,
we are going to be previewing joint practices with the Seattle Seahawks
and what I'm looking for there and what the questions are there for the AM. We are going to be previewing joint practices with the Seattle Seahawks
and what I'm looking for there and what the questions are there for the Titans.
And then, obviously, we'll be recapping those joint practices
on the last two episodes of the week.
So, again, make sure that you get subscribed.

It's your team every day.
All right.
So, talking about this offensive line,
Brian Callahan said himself that this offensive line performed well from top to bottom.
And especially at the top with the first string and a little bit of the second string offensive line as well.
So I really just want to talk about some of these performances.
We'll start with J.C. Latham.
So J.C. Latham said after the game that he would give himself a C. All right. That
would be his grade for himself. And I got to be honest with you. I think I would fully agree with
him. Uh, if you look at what he was able to do out there, there were some good pass pro reps
where we was able to get hands on guys, but there were some bad pass pro reps too, where he really
got pushed back further than you would expect. He wasn't really able to pop guys with his hands like he was known for coming out of college.
But he seemed pretty aware of that.
Overall, though, he got great movement in the run game.
He was able to push some guys around.
Excuse me.
Had a 68, still dying,.0 pass block grade in the game.
But gave up zero pressures., gave up zero sacks.
And I think for Titans fans, at least,
when you look at the left tackle play over the last few years,
if you watch JC Latham and you watch the Titans first team offense
for those, you know, 12, 14 plays,
that they were actually in the game,
Will Levis wasn't getting immediately pressured from the left side.
Will Levis had the opportunity to step up and make throws.
He had time to sit in there and make throws.
That play where he eventually scrambled and got popped,
he had so much time in the pocket.
It was truly incredible to see from a Titans fan perspective,
especially after going over the last few years of offensive tackle play.
So, J.C. Latham, I'm not going to sit up here and tell you that it was perfect.
It's kind of similar to me to the Tavondre Sweat situation.
The only difference is when I say it about Sweat, everybody's mad.
When I say it about Latham, everybody agrees.
You can tell me why that is that way.
You know, whatever.
But there's much more room for improvement there.
But also, you see kind of what can be.
Some of these double teams
where he hit the hip of the defensive lineman,
it is literally exactly what he did for Alabama in college.
And he gets so much displacement on some of these double teams.
It's incredible.
Now, I will say that there were a few plays
where he needs to climb up to the second level, and he simply did not. He didn't do it. It's kind of a mental error, because usually
if he's blocking down on a double team, you would think maybe there would be a puller coming in
behind, but there is no puller, and it looks like he's just supposed to climb up to the second level,
and he just doesn't do it. So I think some of the timing stuff for him of, oh, this is how long I'm up to the second level and he just doesn't do it. So I think some of the timing stuff for him of,
oh, this is how long I'm on the double team.
Then I got to climb to the next level.
That's what I got to do.
I think some of that stuff definitely needs to improve.
But again, first NFL action for a rookie.
Like, I'm pretty happy with what he was able to do out there.
Skowronski just looked awesome. 79.3 pass blocking grade, second highest
on the Titans offensive line. Again, zero pressure, zero sacks. I mean, you look at the whole first
team offensive line, zero pressures and zero sacks the whole time. Two drives, not a pressure,
not a sack. Is this life now? Like, what do we do here? Now, I'm sure that there will be ups and downs,
and they were going against San Francisco's kind of backup defense.
There were a couple maybe starting-level players out there,
but mostly the backup defense.
So we're not going to freak out.
But, I mean, honestly, other fans of other teams probably would not understand.
But if you're a Titans fan and have been watching these games the last few years,
I don't care who they're going against.
Any, if
Andre Dillard and Jalen Duncan
were out there, or
Dennis Daly was out there,
they wouldn't have given up zero sacks and zero
pressures, even against a second team
defense. So, I don't really
care about people, oh, it's just the preseason. This is
a good development, okay? So,
Skowronski was really good in
this game. Cushenberry as well. Dylan
Radins tied Peter Skowronski with a
79.3 pass blocking
grade. He was pretty efficient
there. That's what you would expect
I guess. And then MPF
you know, it wasn't perfect either
but again, looked very much improved
from what we saw from him last year.
There were great moments.
MPF had some really good run blocking.
Like he really had some good run blocks.
Tony Pollard's big play.
He had a good run block as we talked about on yesterday's show.
So just really impressed with the first group on the offensive line.
And all of them really performed well.
I mean, again, it wasn't perfect.
But like, how can you bat an eye at it? You know, and even
you go to the second string offensive line,
I thought Garron Christian did a pretty good job at
left tackle, but really on the interior.
Daniel Brunskill and Andrew Rupsch
played very well as backup guys
on the interior, and I'm to the point where I think both
of those guys have a good chance to
make this roster.
Now that Sadiq Charles is gone.
I like,
I just think the,
the Titans offensive line depth is too important this year.
I would keep nine offensive linemen and Brian Callahan even pointed out
Andrew Rupsich afterwards and said him and Daniel Brunskill played very well,
especially Andrew Rupsich.
Andrew Rupsich had an 82.2 pass blocking grade,
which was the best on the team, and he had 17 pass blocking reps, which was a lot. I mean,
the first string offensive line only had five, and Rupschitz had 17 with zero pressures and zero
sacks in the highest pass blocking grade. So, you know, small sample size still, but bigger sample
size than we saw from the first string, and then he had an 83 run blocking grade two, which was the best.
I mean, Rupcich had a good game.
I'm very excited to look at his performance,
and I think I'm going to do kind of an individual deep dive into Andrew Rupcich
later this week on the Tic Tac Titans film channel,
which you can subscribe to with the link down below in the description.
So overall, again, like Brian Callahan said, top to bottom,
this offensive line performed pretty well.
I believe they only gave up one sack, period.
And it was when Malik Willis was in the game.
No sacks for Mason Rudolph or Will Levis.
Like, again, it's hard to believe.
It's absolutely hard to believe.
But with the offensive line performance and Tavondre Sweat in the books,
now let's talk about these Tennessee Titans linebackers
because they had a fantastic performance as well, a lot of them.
And you could tell by the grading as well, which we'll get into.
But it's not as good as maybe it sounds.
And I'll explain why before I get into it, though.
And I'll explain why before I get into it though.

Let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about Devondre Sweat, talked about the offensive line.
Now I want to talk about the Tennessee Titans linebackers.
As a reminder on tomorrow's show, I'm going to be looking at some of the more holistic stuff
from the Tennessee Titans offense and defense.
Wanted to kind of hold off on those conversations until I got to watch the tape
so I can actually chart the plays and understand exactly what they were trying to do out there.
Feel like that's important information.
And then on the next episode of this week, we're going to preview joint practices with
the Seattle Seahawks.
My last two episodes of the week, of course, we'll be breaking down those.
I'll have a bonus episode on Friday night with a preview of the preseason game.
And then I'll be live again after Saturday night's preseason game, just like I was this
week.
We're not slowing down here on the Locked on Titans podcast. game, and then I'll be live again after Saturday night's preseason game, just like I was this week.
We're not slowing down here on the Locked on Titans podcast, so thank you for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen each and every day.
Now go check out Locked on Fantasy Football.
It's that time of year, folks.
You need to get your daily insight to the best fantasy draft strategies so you can win
your league.
You'll find that on Locked on Fantasy Football, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
But looking at the linebackers,
it's funny if you look at the pro football focus grades.
And look, pro football focus grades don't mean anything.
They're just a good baseline.
It's how I feel about analytics in football.
It's not the end-all, be-all.
You can't look at a pro football focus grade and be like,
oh, that player played bad because the grade says so. You've got to match that up with what you see on tape as well. It's
got to be a combination. But like analytics and football decision-making, it is a piece of the
puzzle. Look, I am a guy who will say the head coach needs to read the game. You can't just do
the same thing in every situation. If I have not been running the ball very well in short yardage
situations, I probably won't go for it on fourth and one where I need to run the ball. I would
probably either pass or not go for it. Like you got to read game to game, but the analytics need
to be a piece of the puzzle. Hey, success rate is this percentage when teams go for it. This is how
it changes when projection stuff like that. Like it's got to be a piece of the puzzle. So just wanted to say that, but you look at the pro
football focus grades on defense for the Titans and four out of the top five, Keiondre Coburn was
number one, Titans interior defensive lineman. So good to see that. But four out of the five
were inside linebackers. Chance Campbell, 83.7.
James Williams, the rookie, 81.9.
Kenneth Murray, 80.4.
Otis Reese, 80.2.
And remember, a 60 grade is an average grade.
So really good performances from all of those inside linebackers.
And Brian Callahan even said about James Williams,
I don't think he knows how good
he can be yet because he's transitioning from a safety um so I'm very excited about this inside
linebacker group and again we're going to talk about the defense more holistically tomorrow when
I have the opportunity to to break down the tape and it crazy. Right before I went to record this episode, got the tape.
So very excited to spend my Sunday night and all Monday
breaking down this tape and getting videos ready for you guys
for the Tic Tac Titans film channel.
But in this Denard Wilson defense,
where they're going to bring pressure from the linebacker spot consistently,
it's just going to be very, very important that the linebackers play well.
And to see the starting linebacker, the second string linebacker, two young linebackers we're
excited about in Otis Reese and James Williams play the way that they did and be able to execute
the idea of that. Do you know how important that is that, Hey, our scheme is going to be dependent
on bringing pressure from different places like the safeties and the linebackers. Well, that sounds great, but if you don't have linebackers that can actually execute that because
they don't have skill sets that match up with that, well, it's going to be pretty difficult
to get the best version of your defense. And the Titans linebackers all look like they have the
skill sets necessary to do it. Chance Campbell was an incredible athlete coming out of college.
Like he had great athletic testing scores. People are mad about Jack Gibbons all the time. Cause
he's not a great athlete. I always remember talking about these guys, like they're very
rookie season, like Gibbons and chance. Campbell will be looked at that. You'll just look at them
and you'll be like, Oh, they're probably similar. But they're very different. Gibbons is more of an instinctual player.
He's a guy with great length and stuff like that.
Where you look at Chance Campbell, he is a very good athlete.
He did have good testing scores.
So it makes sense that in this style of defense,
Campbell would look better than Jack Gibbons.
It's crazy to think that Gibbons is clearly, people
would think Gibbons is clearly ahead of Campbell, but Campbell was the 6th round
draft pick that year, and Gibbons was an undrafted free agent.
Think about that. I would not be surprised if Chance Campbell was able
to take over for Jack Gibbons at some point in the season.
You know what I mean? I don't think that's incomprehensible to see happen.
Now, Otis Reese and James Williams,
cannot wait to watch the tape on those guys
because they were absolutely flying around.
And like I said, Brian Callahan even pointed out James Williams,
thought he played well,
and said he doesn't even know how good he can be yet.
I think that they're so, so high on what James Williams can do. I mean,
Rancard Thawne, again, made a name for himself. I'm going to make a name for myself here,
if you guys catch that reference. But made a name for himself in the front office by finding
late round linebackers. That's something that he did very well and his team did very well. So very excited about that.
Now let me, just for a second,
I don't want to rain on the parade.
Good for the linebackers.
But Titans need more out of the pass rush in general.
Like all of the pressure the Titans got last night
was from the linebackers.
The majority of it.
We didn't see any real pressure.
I think Rashad Weaver one time got close to a quarterback
and knocked down a pass, right?
Like he had a pass defended.
But for the most part, not a lot of pressure off the edge.
Brian Callahan admitted Jalen Harrell.
They need to see more from him in the pass rush.
Rashad Weaver, you would think that he would be dominating out there
going against, you know, second and third string offensive linemen.
Simply didn't.
Not a bad day, but simply didn't.
So, I think that this happens every training camp.
Getting reports about how good Jalen Harrell looks
makes people, you know, and Shane Ray,
makes people kind of forget this is still
a need.
And as I talked about with Arden Key, probably still getting suspended at some point.
I wouldn't have liked this before the Arden Key suspension, but with it coming, maybe
Yannick Ngakwe, maybe you give him a call.
I believe Carl Lawson still available over the weekend.
I didn't see him sign anywhere.
If he did over the weekend, maybe he did.
I didn't see it.
I saw him work out somewhere.
It was Dallas, and I believe there's another workout.
But, you know, I'm still in favor of maybe bringing in a free agent edge.
Like, I'm just not ruling that out because Brian Callahan said it,
and I agree.
Quote, we would like to see more from the pass rush next time we go out there.
And I agree.
So Seattle's offensive line, it's good.
Their tackles kind of regressed last year.
Um, they added some stuff up the middle, so we will see, but I don't think it's such a
great offensive line that the Titans, um Titans shouldn't expect to have some success.
There should be some improvement.
But with that being said,
I'm going to go break down some tape,
get ready to be back with you guys tomorrow
to have a tape-based conversation.
If you've been watching this show
