Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans Will Levis NEEDS HELP, Offensive Line Disappoints & T'Vondre Sweat Tape Domination
Episode Date: September 10, 2024The Tennessee Titans and quarterback Will Levis took an ugly loss to the Chicago Bears, but when you cut on the tape, it is never as bad as it seems. While Levis played poorly, there are things that h...e could use some help with as well. One of those is the offensive line who had a very bad opening game as well. They must be better also. Finally, T'Vondre Sweat looked better on tape than it seemed like he played and that is key for the defense moving forward.Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitansTicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=ascFollow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitansFollow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPodSubscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videosFor your next listen, check out the Locked On Fantasy Football podcast. It is time to step into the film room with me
as we break down what I saw on tape from week one.
Will Levis needs some help.
Also, the offensive line was a true disappointment.
And finally, got to give some more credit to Tavondre Sweat in the defense.
I'll tell you what the Titans did to attack the Bears.
Before we get into all of that, I do want to thank you
for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen each and every day.
Remember, Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round
always for free. You're not going to beat
that anywhere else. Make sure that you get

It's your team every
day here on the
Locked on Titans podcast. Speaking
of every day, shout out to my everydayers out there
tuning in Monday through Friday. Couldn't do it
without you guys if you aren't an everydayer. Well,
you need to be one.
Tomorrow is crossover Thursday.
I'm going to be speaking with my guy John B. from Locked on Jets
to get an idea of what they're thinking over there in New York.
And then on Friday, I'll have a game plan for you guys.
But if you want to see the film that I actually break down
to go with our conversation today,
make sure that you go over to the Tic Tac Titans film breakdown YouTube channel.
I'm going to have the link to that down in the description.
I've had a video on the top plays of the week.
Did a breakdown on Will Levis' performance,
which we're going to talk quite a bit about here.
I got a Tavondre Sweat video coming out on Monday morning,
which I'll give you a little preview of in our final segment.
So make sure that you go check out the film channel
to pair up with the conversations
that we're having here on the Locked on Titans podcast.
But starting with Will Levis,
and again, I know that a lot of you guys
are scratching your head right now.
Wait a minute.
Why does Will Levis need help?
Will Levis needs to be better himself.
And you know what?
You are right.
Will Levis does need to be better himself.
And I'll tell you exactly how he needs to be better,
but he also needs some help around him as well,
and there are some things in the game that really let me down
about the supporting cast and the things that have to help Will Levis
to go along with him letting himself down as well.
I think I want to start with kind of my criticisms of Will Levis
from watching the tape.
The number one thing that pops into my mind when I watch Will Levis play this week is
Will Levis isn't an athletic quarterback. He is an athlete that has been taught to play
quarterback. I don't know how else to properly explain it, and if it doesn't make sense,
I don't really know what else to say, but he just doesn't have the natural feel of a quarterback.
Will Levis has said he was a running back.
He was a linebacker, and then he was taught to play quarterback.
He was moved to quarterback early in his life.
Well, he plays football like a linebacker and a running back.
That's the way that he plays.
He's just frantic, man.
His feet are all over the place in the pocket.
He just looks
nervous. He doesn't look like a guy who naturally was meant to be a quarterback. Will Levis looks,
got to give a shout out to my brother here. My brother said it today on the phone. Will Levis
is a football player more than he is a quarterback. And that's the way that he plays. And that's
something that I don't know that you're ever going to be able to fix. You're going to have to coach around that aspect of Will Levis' game.
He's not, and I hate to do this to Titans fans,
but he doesn't have the pure quarterback instincts of like a C.J. Stroud.
He just doesn't play the position the same way.
He doesn't feel things the same way.
And that's what gets him to trouble with in the pocket.
So the number one thing that I have to point out for Will Levis
that he has to get better at is his movement in the pocket.
Too many times he would drift off his midline.
So think if you drew a line from the center through the quarterback.
Will Levis would drift to the left.
I saw a couple people in the comments of my film breakdown
say he has drift stick, like on your video game controller,
when your joystick is broken
and your character will kind of float one way or the other.
I would also compare it to when your alignment is off in your car
and you let go of your wheel and your car starts to go the other way.
Will Levis' alignment is off in the pocket.
And every time he starts to feel a little bit of pressure,
he starts to drift back and towards the left.
Back and towards the left. Back and towards the left.
And Brian Callahan talked about it.
It's something that they've tried to coach out,
but he reverted back to it when the pressure got on him in the game.
So things need to be better around Will Levis,
but he's got to stop drifting in the pocket to the left
and getting closer to where the pressure is coming from.
And that's something that really, really hurt him in this game.
There are two plays in particular.
There are really three plays throughout the game,
but two plays in particular.
The play where he missed Calvin Ridley on the deep post.
All right, the ball was a little underthrown
because he got a little bit of a contact as he's throwing the ball.
Well, the problem is that on that play, Will Levis went
all the way to the left compared to the midline of where him and the center were at the start of
the play. The one thing here is where I start to kick in, Will Levis needs help. So Will Levis
drifted on a couple of plays on the Calvin Ridley post. There's also a play that almost was a sack
where Levis did it to himself. He like
bounced, did a two footed bounce away from the midline where he had space and bounced towards
the pressure coming from the left tackle spot. I don't know why he is bouncing that direction.
It doesn't make sense. But on the post to Ridley, go watch the film breakdown that I did. He does a
play action fake. And normally when you do a play-action fake
and then you get into a quarterback drop-back,
it's your throwing shoulder that is in the back.
You are going backwards with your throwing shoulder backwards
so that your arm is at the back so you're ready to throw.
On the missed post to Calvin Ridley,
Will Levis does a play-action fake
and then he drops back to the left
with his left shoulder backwards.
So then he's got to reverse, reverse, and flip his feet so that his back
shoulder is back so he can make a throw.
And the timing of doing that and drifting back left, it leads him into the
pressure that he takes that makes him underthrow the pass to Calvin Ridley.
So while Will Levis on a couple of plays drifts himself,
he also drifts into pressure on the pick six.
But the design of the play has his shoulders twisted
and him drifting left.
So I'm not going to say I know more about football
than Brian Callahan or say Brian Callahan is wrong.
I'm just saying I am very confused as to why Will Levis is doing that
off the play-action fake.
I've never seen a quarterback drift that far left with his left shoulder forward
on a play-action fake.
So again, Will Levis needs to clean things up himself with his decision making,
and he needs to not drift left. But why is the plan for him to do that off the play action fake?
That to me doesn't make any sense. And that's not on Will Levis. That's the design of the play from
Brian Callahan. And while we're talking about Brian Callahan, the Tennessee Titans only ran play action on 13% of Will Levis' dropbacks.
13% play action rate.
The league average is 22.
Why would the Titans have a non-play action game plan?
Why wasn't there more play action involved from the beginning?
Now, Brian Callahan said it's kind of hard to play action on 2nd and 12.
Well, it's hard to play action on 2nd and 12
because you ran a run play on first down
that got zero yards or lost yards.
Why aren't we play actioning on first down
where that's not as much of an issue?
And honestly, that's some of the complaints
I had about last year's offense,
that they weren't going to play action
on early downs enough.
And I think the Titans got conservative
and Brian Callahan got a little scared
in the second half.
And he said, we're running on first down.
We're running on first down.
We're running on first down.
When the Titans really needed to play action early
rather than waiting to do it on second and manageable.
So that is, again, Will Levis has to clean up his own problems.
But that's help that he needs from the play caller
and the play design to help him out with some of those things.
And then, of course, the offensive line struggled,
and Will Levis was pressured the second most of any quarterback in week one.
So we need to talk about the offensive line and what I saw on tape.
And unfortunately, one of my favorite guys had a terrible, terrible game,
and I'm going to tell you who that is.
Before I do though,
I do want to let you guys know
that today's episode is brought to you
by FanDuel Sportsbook.

of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about Will Levis, some of the drifting,
but also some of the play design that also caused Will Levis
to drift into pressure that I'm confused about as well.
But now we got to talk about the offensive line
because that was the other problem for the Titans.
And, you know, I'm talking about Will Levis needs help
from the play design.
Will Levis needs help from the play calling.
But Will Levis also needs some help from the offensive line.
And I think it was easy to pile on Will Levis
because of the decision making.
But when you start to watch the tape,
you see how it definitely wasn't all on him.
Okay?
So looking at the offensive line, before we get into it,
I do want to thank you again for making the Locked on Titans podcast
your first listen.

I break down the tape and show you what I see with Devondre Sweat,
some of the best plays of the week as well.
And I'm going to have a preview of the New York Jets and what the Titans should be looking for on film later this week.
So a lot of promotion, but a lot of great content.
And I want to make sure that you guys know exactly where to get it.
But looking at the offensive line, the offensive line's got to get better.
And I said, I said for the last two weeks
before the season started,
and I said it after this game,
the offensive line is going to take some time.
You have a rookie left tackle,
rookie offensive lineman always struggle.
Boom.
You got a second year player in Peter Skowronski
who we hope takes a big leap this year,
but that leap may not happen immediately in week one.
Obviously, Lloyd Cushenberry is not a rookie,
but he is a guy who's new to this offensive line
and new to this offensive system.
Dylan Radins may not be the youngest player ever.
He's in his fourth year,
but he hasn't had a lot of experience to actually play
and actually man a spot and be a starter. And NPF, we know, started his entire rookie year,
only played a couple of games last year, and now is in his third year with no offseason due to
injury. He was already playing catch up. So this offensive line will be improved from recent years,
but it is going to take time.
That is a reality.
And during that process of taking time,
they may take some lumps.
And they did against the Chicago Bears.
I mean, J.C. Latham really struggled with Daryl Taylor.
He was getting beat inside consistently as the game wore on.
Peter Skowronski, honestly, Pete had a very bad game. Will Levis had a bad game.
Peter Skowronski might have had a worse game. I mean, it was rough for Peter Skowronski, and you got to give the Bears the credit. They really figured out how to attack the offensive line as
the game went on. So talking about some of the things that Chicago did to adjust, the Titans
came out of the gate. They had a good plan.
They were able to run the ball in the first half with success.
It led to two scoring drives because they were able to run the football.
And that is exactly what I said
the game plan should be for the Titans.
Run the ball was my number one thing
for the offense going into the game.
And they were able to do that
against a very good run defense from the Bears.
But then in the second half,
the Bears made adjustments.
So what did the Bears do?
The Bears are a four-man front team.
They like to play only four down linemen.
Well, what they started doing is they started pinching their defensive line inside and then rolling one of their linebackers onto the line of scrimmage
so that they were in a five-man front.
Now, what does this do to the Titans' offense?
Well, the Titans were having a lot of success with gap runs,
with power runs, where you're down-blocking and double-teaming,
and then you're bringing a puller across the formation.
Well, when you condense things on the defensive line,
now you can't really double-team as well,
because imagine if there was a defensive lineman over the tackle,
not one over the guard, one over the center,
and then one over the other guard.
If you look at the interior trio,
there's only two guys covered, the center and then the other guard,
and then one of the guards is free.
Now that guard can double team with the center
and climb up to the second level and get on a backer.
But when the line is slanting in
and when you condense that alignment for the
defensive linemen so that there are more bodies in that area, well, now I can't double team because
we're all covered up. We all have a one-on-one responsibility and now I can't double team and
get to the second level because we all got to win one-on-one. That ruins the leverage of the play.
That makes it mismatches for the Titans on the interior. And when you bring that linebacker down to the middle,
they can bring pressure off the outside.
And if you're pulling a guy around,
well, now that linebacker that needs to get kicked out by the puller,
now he's closer.
And now there's less room for the running back to get through.
So you're ruining the double teams on the inside and how easy that is for the Titans.
Also making it more different on the puller who's trying to kick out
and you're condensing the space at which the running back is supposed to go through.
So the Bears made a great adjustment to create some five-man fronts
to slant inside and ruin some of the double teams and make it more difficult on the Titans
backside pullers. So the Bears did that in the second half and that really
eliminated the Titans' run game.
I think the Titans should have pivoted
to more zone run and attacking the perimeter more
than some of the power plays
that they were trying to run inside.
But they just didn't adjust quick enough
to get the run game going in the second half.
The linebackers for the Bears also.
There was a couple more,
I don't know if you want to call them blitzes necessarily,
but the Bears linebackers were much more willing
to get downhill in the second half
and they were willing to come through
and then it makes it harder for the linemen
to do that double team and get to the second level.
Well, I can't get to the second level as well
because the linebacker is coming downhill faster.
So the Bears made good adjustments in the way that they play.
Also in the pass rush,
the Bears really made a concerted effort in the second half
to send their defensive tackles vertically.
And then what that means is that the outside edge guys
can get inside easier
because the defensive tackles are going vertically up the field
and then the edge rushers can swoop inside and both the Titans offensive
tackles, Nicholas Petit-Ferrer and J.C. Latham, struggle with
inside moves. So what you're doing is you're creating
a situation where the inside move is easier to get to
while also attacking guys who are
vulnerable to their inside already.
So just a really, really smart plan up front
from the Chicago Bears in the second half
that shut down the Titans' run game
and allowed them to get more pressure on Will Levis.
Once they got more pressure on Will Levis,
his screws started to tighten.
He started playing a little less loose,
and it led to mistakes.
So that's what the Bears did on defense.
That's how they made adjustments and attacked the Titans offensive line.
Now we got to talk about the Titans defense, which had a very good plan for the Chicago
Bears.
And we'll lead off that conversation talking about Tavondre Sweat and what I saw from him
on tape, which is a preview to the Tavondre Sweat film breakdown video that comes out Wednesday morning, 8am
on the Tic Tac Titans YouTube channel. So can't wait to dive into the defense.

We talked about Will Levis and what he needs to get better at,
but also he needs some help.
He needs some help with the play design,
the play calling, with the offensive line.
We talked about the offensive line struggles
and how the Bears chose to attack in the second half.
Now I want to flip over and talk about the Tennessee Titans defense.
Before I do, thank you again for making Locked on Titans

with that being said,
we got to talk about Tavondre Sweat.
Alright, I talked about him yesterday and just watching the game copy,
but after watching the film of the defense, definitely impressive.
Absolutely impressive stuff.
Now, before I get into what impressed me most, I do just want to say this,
and I already know the reaction and how it's going to be, and I don't care.
I'm being honest, all right?
Tavondre Sweat played a lot better in the first half
than he did the second half, okay?
That's a fact.
In my film breakdown of Tavondre Sweat,
I have five good plays.
Like five, that's not, you know, like he only had five good plays,
but five plays where he really stood out,
only one of them was in the second half.
He was much less noticeable in the second half.
Now, we're talking about a rookie in his first NFL game ever, so I would imagine that that
is going to improve mightily, but at the end of the day, the second half, I would have
liked to see a little bit more in the second half.
But again, it's a rookie.
I'm not trying to hate.
Overall, very good game.
He was one of the Titans' best players.
I would say he was their second-best defensive player
on the day behind Imani Hooker,
and that is reflected in his pro football focus grades as well.
Tavondre Sweat, second-highest graded Tennessee Titan
on the defensive side of the ball.
Not only that, but some other stats here that I wanted to go over.
Tavondre Sweat was second among all rookie defensive linemen
in pro football focus grade with a 77.7.
He also was the second highest graded pass rushing
interior defensive lineman in the entire NFL.
In the entire NFL.
So, great debut for
Devondre Sweat. First and foremost
he had a
very good swipe down
on the early play
that he made early in the game where he
forced Caleb Williams out of the pocket which
thanks Arden Key for nothing.
Arden Key ruined a Devondre Sweat sack
and allowed Caleb Williams to break
contain and get out of the pocket. So again, Arden Key ruined a Tavondre Sweat sack and allowed Caleb Williams to break contain and get out of the pocket.
So, again, Arden Key, man, it's just frustrating to watch.
But Tavondre Sweat, again, so impressive with his hands.
For a man that size, he swipes down on the offensive lineman's hands
when they get in his chest, and then he does a club with his outside arm
and swims over with his inside arm,
and he's right in Caleb Williams' lap.
Again, he gets blocked by Arden Key with his head down,
stumbling forward, losing a rep against the offensive tackle,
and Key ends up blocking Tavondre Sweat on that one.
There's another play, though,
where I was critical of Tavondre Sweat and his ability to pass rush with power
when he was drafted after we broke down the tape of him at Texas.
But he has a power rush against an offensive lineman in this game
that was impressive where he got a pressure as well.
So love to see that he's not just winning with his hands
and trying to be fancy and trying to be a big man shooting threes.
He played with power on a pass rush rep and won as well.
I want to see more of
that from him as he continues to develop as a player, but seeing it in week one, that's like,
okay, that's a good sign. Let's keep that going. So I loved seeing that. He was disruptive in the
run game three times. One of them was called back by a penalty. The Bears were holding,
so the Titans didn't count the play. They pushed him back 10 yards, but the play is still on tape,
and Tavondre Sweat
was incredibly disruptive. Now,
there were a couple plays early where he gets moved
out of his gap, and the Bears have some good
runs, down-to-down consistency,
but overall, Devondre Sweat
played 37 snaps.
I think it was only nine less
than Jeffrey Simmons. I was concerned about
cap, or cap.
I was concerned about snap counts.
Shut up, Tyler.
He's going to be out there and play fine.
I was concerned about power rushing.
Shut up, Tyler.
He was able to do that.
I was concerned about down-to-down consistency.
That still needs to improve a little bit,
but he's a rookie in his first game.
Who am I to criticize him for that?
So overall, a very good game from
Tavondre Sweat, but looking at the defense as a whole for the Titans, some of the things I noticed,
the Bears really tried to attack the perimeter. The Bears did not want to run through the teeth
of the Titans defense. They did a lot of tosses. They did a lot of sweeps. They threw a lot of
outside quick screens. They wanted to attack the perimeter of the Tennessee Titans defense.
They wanted nothing to do with Jeffrey Simmons and Tavondre Sweat
and trying to run through the A gaps or the B gaps.
That did not happen for the Bears.
They went to attack the perimeter.
And with that, the reason that the Titans defense held up so well
is because of the physicality of their outside cornerbacks.
Roger McCreary, well, outside cornerbacks, I'll say their defensive
backs in general. The physicality of the Titans' defensive backs is why
the Bears were not able to have success running to the perimeter as their plan.
LeJarrius Sneed was incredibly physical in this game. He made multiple
tackles. There's one play where the Bears run a toss sweep, and they have a lead
blocker as an offensive lineman coming out.
Might have been a tight end, too, but a big guy.
LeJarrius Sneed literally dives into him, cuts his legs out,
and hits the running back in the process to make the tackle.
LeJarrius Sneed played incredibly physical and made tackles on the edge.
Roger McCreary had three tackles for loss in this game.
Roger McCreary was so incredibly physical, not only against the run,
but against the this game. Roger McCreary was so incredibly physical, not only against the run, but against the screen game.
Roger McCreary basically shut down the screen game
of the Chicago Bears by himself.
Roger McCreary was really good in this game.
The Titans encouraged that behavior.
They put Jeffrey Simmons and Tavondre Sweat
head up over the guards.
They said, we're not giving you,
because usually what you do is you have one guy shaded over the center,
and then you have another guy in the B gap.
The Titans said, no, we're just putting them head up over the guards.
We're not giving you any advantage on the interior or either side.
You can have two tight ends on the field.
We don't care.
We'll roll Harold Landry down in a five-man front.
Like, the Titans played in nickel and they were able to really do a great job against the Bears run game because
Devondre Sweat and Jeffrey Simmons were so good on the interior and the defensive backs were willing
to be so physical. Imani Hooker included. Imani Hooker was the best defensive player on the Titans
and a lot of it had to do with his run fits. So physical in the run game.
Imani Hooker had a couple of pass breakups
in the pass game as well.
He deserves so much credit.
He's such an underrated player by this fan base.
I know he's been a little banged up
over the last few years,
but Imani Hooker's really good.
The last thing I want to mention
is a rush package for the Titans.
So it may not have been something that caught your eye,
but the Titans went to a rush package on third downs where they had Arden Key and Jeffrey Simmons as their interior
rushers. And then they had Harold Landry and Jalen Harrell as their edge guys. This continues
my push to explain to everyone the Titans need another edge desperately in the 2025 draft in
the 2025 offseason. The number one need for the Tennessee Titans is an edge rusher. They need
another second quality edge. All right. Absolutely. They do. Arden Key. When you have Jeffrey Simmons
and Harold Landry on one side that works, but on the other side, you have Arden Key and Jalen
Harrell. Look, Jalen Harrell.
Look, Jalen Harrell is going to be a really good rotational player
for the Titans, but he's a seventh-round rookie.
He is not the upside edge rusher that the Titans need.
Arden Key was bad in this game.
I talked about him blocking Tavondre Sweat.
He broke contain for Caleb Williams a bunch of times,
did not hold his edge in the run game a couple of
times. Like Arden Key is not a starting edge rusher in the NFL and the Titans need one opposite of
Harold Landry desperately, man. It is the biggest need on defense that they have. So that's my
breakdown of what I saw on tape from Will Levis, the offensive line and the offensive plan, and
then the defensive plan and
Devondre Sweat. If you want to see this stuff, if you want to see the clips, you want to see me
telestrate this stuff, head over to the Tic Tac Titans YouTube channel right now. Get subscribed
there. I'm going to be breaking down Titans content for free all year long on the Tic Tac Titans
YouTube channel. So with that being said, though, that is going to do it for me today, folks.
