Starting point is 00:01:17 I think the Colts are going to have a massive meltdown that results and a ton of firings. I'm going to tell you why. And we're going to talk to Jake Arthur from Locked on Colts and get his perspective on all of this that I think about that team. But again, we got to start. with kind of what the Colts have done this all season. And I got to be honest, I think the Colts have had one of the worst all seasons of any team in the NFL.

Starting point is 00:01:43 I think Jacksonville is probably the worst. I think a team like Green Bay, Seattle, Arizona could be in there as well. But I think the Colts are right there fighting for the next best after the Jacksonville Jaguars. They have absolutely gutted what really kept the Colts an interesting team over the last few seasons. So allow me for a moment to paint. All right, just close your eyes for a moment.

Starting point is 00:02:09 Allow me to paint the picture. The reason that the Colts have been a competitive football team for years, from Matt Ryan, old man Matt Ryan, to Carson Wentz, to Garner Menshu,

Starting point is 00:02:25 to Anthony Richardson, to Philip Rivers, to even older Philip Rivers. All of these different random mid to less than mid quarterbacks. And the Colts have remained competitive. Why is that? Why did they think that they could just plug in quarterback here,

Starting point is 00:02:45 plug in quarterback here, remain competitive, and they were right. It's because the roster was so good everywhere else. They had good depth on the defensive line. They had great linebacker groups. They had great offensive line. a great running back, a good cast of weapons. The Colts were a good team over the last few years because their roster was so strong.

Starting point is 00:03:16 Well, what happened last year was, is they got tranced by Danny Dimes. He put them in a trance that first 10 games of the year when they were 8 and 2 before they collapsed and went 0.7. still ended up being better than I thought they were going to be. But the wheels started falling off at the end. It wasn't just the injuries, yeah, we're a problem. And my guy Jake Arthur from Lockstone Colts

Starting point is 00:03:41 going to talk about the injuries a lot. But Danny Dime started to fall off a cliff a little bit his last three or four games. He was not playing like he did at the start of the season. People started to understand what the Colts were trying to do, where they were trying to attack, what they were most successful with, and they were starting to adjust.

Starting point is 00:03:59 Now, the big problem, again, is that they gave all that money to Daniel Jones and Alec Pierce to keep that exciting connection around and they sacrificed what made their team good over the last few years. They trade Zaire Franklin to the Green Bay Packers and what do they replace him with?

Starting point is 00:04:24 They have Akeem Davis Gather, a journeyman, Jagg, linebacker, and two rookies, C.J. Allen, who is expected to be a good player, right? Second round pick. And Bryce Botcher from the fourth round. Is that a good enough linebacker group? I don't think so.

Starting point is 00:04:49 Yeah, the secondary is pretty good with good cornerbacks. I like A.J. Hossy as a young safety in the third round this year. Cam Bynum's not a bad safety either. The secondary's good, but go to their edge group. They lost quitty pay. and who'd they replace them with. Arden Key? DeForest Buckner's a year older. Grover Stewart a year older.

Starting point is 00:05:12 Who's behind him? Colby Wooden, who they traded for? You know, I just, Michael Clemens, J.T. Toulamolow out from Ohio State, who I liked but did not have a good season last year, and they disliked him so much. They brought in Arden Key to play over him. Yes, that Arden Key. So their edge rush group is terrible.

Starting point is 00:05:35 And they lost a good young player. You go to the offensive line. They let Braden Smith leave. Now Jalen Travis at right tackle. What's he going to be? And you're only as strong as your weak link on the offensive line. If Jalen Travis is not good, the Colts offensive line suffers in a big way.

Starting point is 00:05:56 Quentin Nelson, one of the best guards of all time. Another year older, though. And then at wide receiver, you lose Michael Pittman, Jr., who is your chain mover, And you're big-bodied guy who can run those short-to-intermediate routes and get the yards that you need. And you trade him away just to save money. And you're replacing him with Nick Westbrook-Akeke.

Starting point is 00:06:23 And you're saying you're going to give more opportunities to Alec Pierce. I'm sorry, NWI plus more opportunities for Alec Pierce is not better than Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce. So Tyler Warren's going to get more opportunities, certainly. And that'll help fill that void. but again, the point is that the totality of the talent on the roster for the Colts is what made them a good football team. And yeah, if you drop Daniel Jones into that,

Starting point is 00:06:54 that could probably win some games. That roster isn't anywhere near as good as it was for the first stint of Philip Rivers or Carson Wentz or Gardner-Menschu or the first year of Anthony Richardson. This team is not as good as that team. And if that's the case, Daniel Jones off an Achilles, off a broken bone in his other leg, with lesser wide receivers,

Starting point is 00:07:24 lesser tackle play, lesser defense and pass rush, all of those things, and then you add in all the pressure from ownership. And it's something that I'm going to ask Jake about when we go to our conversation with Locked on Colts, but the new owner, Jim Ursa's daughter, Carly Ursaid Gordon, I think that's the name.

Starting point is 00:07:45 She has put a lot of pressure on Shane Steichen and Chris Ballard, the head coach and the general manager, respect them. They got to win. I'm going to ask Jake what constitutes success this year, but like I'm looking at it and I'm like, if they don't make the playoffs, I think Stikin and Ballard are both getting fired. Because it's a new owner. New owners like to put their stamp on things.

Starting point is 00:08:10 They don't want to just come in, especially she's a daughter. Oh, I'm just going to leave everything exactly how my dad had it. No, she wants to establish and announce to the NFL world. I'm the owner now. I'm going to pick my people. We're going to do it my way. I'm making the changes that needed to be made to get this team great. Listen to me, fan base.

Starting point is 00:08:32 I'll do it. I want to prove to you and show you and I want everyone to love me. new owners always do some wild things. I'm not even going to act like it's like a rash decision to fire Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen. I do think Shane Steichen is a good coach though. But Chris Ballard is a whatever general manager. So overrated.

Starting point is 00:08:57 But again, whether it's right, wrong, indifferent new owners like to shake things up and put their stamp on it. And I think that puts everybody on notice in Indianapolis. So with a worst roster, a ton of question mark still on the roster. pressure from ownership, everyone feeling the tension. I think the Colts absolutely collapsed this year.

Starting point is 00:09:18 But what does somebody who covers the Indianapolis Colts on a day-to-day basis think about those thoughts? All right, folks, so as we have been doing all week long during AFC South Rivalry Week,

Starting point is 00:11:06 we are going to get some inside information from the hosts of the other AFC South podcast. That means we got one half of locked on Colts, Jake Arthur, my brother in arms and the glasses gang, as we like to say. We see you guys in the comments saying, me and Jake look like brothers. We find it hilarious. Not related, we can confirm, but nonetheless, we understand. but we need to get that inside scoop on the Colts. And I have said, and Jake, I'll just let you respond.

Starting point is 00:11:33 I'm not going to sugarcoat it. I think that the Colts got worse this all season. I think they sacrificed some of the overall talent on the roster to keep Daniel Jones around, to keep Alec Pierce around, you know, like trading away. Zahir Franklin, the Michael Pittman trade, I really didn't like and replacing them with NWI. I guess do people in Coltsland and your personal take,

Starting point is 00:11:54 do you kind of agree with where I'm at or you may be more optimistic on the way the offseason went than the way that I see it? Yeah, it's fair to be skeptical about whether or not they got better, because we even put that question to Chris Ballard himself after the draft, you know, do you feel you got better? Where do you feel you got better? And in some key areas, I think there's still big questions. You know, no matter what the tone of the offseason was going to be,

Starting point is 00:12:23 I do think they were going to look to move past Michael Pittman Jr. and Zyre Franklin. Pittman Jr. was going to have like the seventh highest cap hit among receivers. It was 29 million. And then obviously to make room for Alec Pierce not only financially, but they really wanted to get Alec Pierce a broadened role in the passing game rather than just being that vertical threat, the big play guy. Just to kind of create room for Alec Pierce's new atmosphere, they probably needed to move past Pittman. And then Franklin just didn't really jive well. with this Louana Rumo defense. He took a very noticeable step back statistically. It was easily his worst season since being a starter.

Starting point is 00:13:07 Just the season before, he was really affecting the game in so many different ways. It was creating turnovers. He's always kind of had some issues with, you know, filling the run and being in the right gaps and kind of getting pushed out of the way. But it was noticeably worse and doing a lot of man coverage, run and chase type stuff that just was not working this year. So those moves probably were going to happen, whether they were a reigning playoff team or not. But it's very interesting to see what they're thinking this is going to turn into. I think they're relying on health a lot, guys who were hurt last year to be healthy,

Starting point is 00:13:45 which is, I mean, it's kind of a risky approach because it's really the reason everything went off the rails last year. Daniel Jones got hurt, but also on the defensive side of the ball, Sauce Gardner, Mooney Ward, DeForest Buck, and everyone is hurt, you know. So you're relying on those guys to not only be back and healthy, but be performing at the level you expect them to. Daniel Jones, that one's tricky because you kind of had to do that. You saw in the first half of the year what it looked like when it's good. You give him the contract that he's like middle of the road APY in terms of quarterback play. So not, yeah, the big deal.

Starting point is 00:14:23 There's some sticker shock, but like you had to do that if you were going to bring it. back. And then Alec Pierce going into a role as a wide receiver won for the first time. There's just big leaps of faith here. But they're also made some moves that look like they'll be better for the future rather than winning right now. Like, you know, the whole linebacker makeover, I agree with it in general, but you're expecting C.J. Allen and Akeem Davis Gather and Bryce Betcher to come in and immediately replace veteran presence like Zyre Franklin, but also Jermaine Pratt. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:15:02 And, you know, the pass rush, we're all still kind of waiting to see what's the deal there because you and I talked after Arden Key was signed, I had you on. You know, he's better as like the next guy up. Like he's a third or fourth pass rusher. But right now it looks like he might be your starter opposite a lot to. And it's like they took a big swing on Trey Hendrickson and missed. So now, like, you just don't do anything else after that. It seems like you're missing something there in the edge room.

Starting point is 00:15:30 So like, did they get better? Maybe if everybody stays healthy because you were missing so much because of the injuries last year. But I don't think they were proactive enough to get better this year, if that makes sense. Like, if everyone's healthy, what you already had, that makes you better. But you didn't go out with like a, you didn't. go and add a bunch of things that guaranteed that you would be better if that makes sense. I would say other than the Titans, which the Titans were so destitute, had to get a new coach, roster was barren, like the Titans had no choice, but to have a very busy off season.

Starting point is 00:16:08 The AFC South was kind of sleepy in the off season. I think the Jags all season, like I didn't like the Colts all season, but I hated the Jacks all season. I talked about it yesterday. Like that was like, or two days ago, that was like the absolute worst. And the Texans, although I think the Texans all season was good. it was still like a boring. Like they added interior defense and offensive linemen

Starting point is 00:16:28 and they re-signed linemen and stuff. So it's like funny how the AOC South was better than people expected last year, but it kind of had a sleepy all season in a way. But I want to go back to Alec Pierce and Daniel Jones because the big question, I think for a lot of people outside and Titans fans are probably wondering as hell. Is Daniel Jones ahead of schedule? It's expected to be ready.

Starting point is 00:16:49 The Alec Pierce thing seems a little more maybe serious or timely than I even expected it to be what's up with the health of those two players. Yeah, so Jones at this point, I don't see why he wouldn't be ready for week one. During OTAs and mini camp, he was out there doing seven on sevens and everything, which is, good sign. I mean, that's, that's good. You're putting him in as close to a game day situation as possible without the pass rush. Now, Shane Steckin did say if they needed to put him into 11 on 11s during that portion of the year,

Starting point is 00:17:22 they would have, but they just weren't going to push the issue. And they were trying to be smart with them. So I've got to imagine early in training camp, maybe even the first practice. We'll see Jones in 11 on 11s. Fast forward a month. At that point, why would he not be ready for week one? So Jones, I don't think that's going to be an issue. It's really just, is he hitting his landmarks that he needs to on like rollouts and stuff for Shane Syking to be comfortable calling certain things. That's been kind of my wonderment, but in general, I think he'll be on the field. The Pierce thing is interesting. We know less about, I don't want to say we know less about it, but just the timeline because we haven't seen him all offseason. Now, the kind of the thing with him,

Starting point is 00:18:07 so basically since the end of 2024, he had an issue with his ankle that he was playing through with some pain and this and that. He played all 2025 with it. and he had a PRP shot right after the season in January, a platement-rich plasma shot to see if that would resolve it. They needed to give it a little time to work. Ultimately, that didn't take care of it. So in March, he had a cleanup procedure, and that carries a four to six-month recovery time,

Starting point is 00:18:37 which basically puts him anywhere from the very beginning of training camp to mid to late September. So, like, if he's on the early side of it, then we may see him early in training camp, but otherwise it could go a little bit into the regular season. So that's very broad. You'd love to see him already out there, given that he's got this big new role.

Starting point is 00:19:00 I'm not worried about him and Daniel Jones chemistry. I think those two worked really well together last year. But, I mean, he's going to be asked to do things he hasn't before. His route tree is going to become a little more boring, a little more diverse with the stuff inside the sticks. He's still going to have his downfield things. that he always did before. But I mean, if you're looking to replace Michael Pittman, Jr.,

Starting point is 00:19:25 Pittman did a lot of that shorter, more boring stuff. Again, the slants, the hitches, the comebacks, outs, all that stuff. Like, Pierce is going to have to incorporate more of that into his game. Yeah, that's not a WI. Yeah, and Jones is not necessarily used to targeting Pierce with that stuff quite as much. Right. So it may take a little bit of, you know, a feeling out period once Pierce does return. But they're two most important offseason priorities, you know, that may take a minute

Starting point is 00:19:55 for them to kind of get up to speed when the season begins. So this could be a misread on my part, but it feels like there's, actually, I feel like the owner said something about, like, I feel like there's big pressure. There's on Shane Steichen and specifically Chris Ballard this season. What do you think needs to happen for them to keep their jobs and to satisfy ownership? and do you think that they'll do it? Yeah. So everyone was kind of caught off guard a little bit that both Shane Stuyken and Chris

Starting point is 00:20:26 Bauer were retained after last year because it was the fifth straight year, no playoffs. Yeah. You know, Carly's going into her first year full time, you know, in control. You thought, okay, clean slate everywhere. And plus, like, they had a lot of their contract stuff set up to be able to hit the detonator button last year. They still can next year. But I think they, you know,

Starting point is 00:20:47 they very much believe they're closer to being that eight and two team that they saw at the first half of last year than the team that finished 0 and 7. They saw how well it worked with Jones and Stuyken when everyone was healthy. Jonathan Taylor was playing unbelievable. You know, Alec Pierce second year in a row leading the NFL in Yardsper catch. And then on the defensive side of the ball, they know that it did not look as good as it should have because of, you know, the injuries. I mean, not having Mooney Ward and then ultimately not having Sauce Gardner, it really changed the complexion of what Lou Aniruma wanted to do on defense overall. They weren't able to do demand coverage as much, which you have to be more careful with blitzing at that point. And then, you know, the linebackers, they had to rely on them in coverage more than they wanted to. So the Colts really took the injuries into account.

Starting point is 00:21:38 but I think this year is the end of those excuses. It has to be, at least, you know, even if everyone does get banged up again and they miss the playoffs, so you just have to say, well, you know, that sucks, but we have to do something. Like we have got to turn the page because otherwise, what are you selling fans on to hope? That already is something we asked this year. It's like, well, what can fans hang their hat on for hope going into this next year

Starting point is 00:22:07 that everyone's going to stay healthy because that's basically what it is now. Yeah. So, yeah, I think they're walking a fine line. And you're right, Carly Ursaig Gordon did come out right after the season and basically said, you know, the sense of urgency we have conveyed to Chris Bowler and Shane's second has never been higher to perform this year. That's putting those guys on the hot seat right away. I think that's got to mean playoffs.

Starting point is 00:22:32 Yeah. Because, I mean, the AFC South is good now, but it's not a juggernaut. It's not the NFC West out here. You know what I mean? Yeah. Like the Colts, again, they drop the last seven games. They should have been in the playoff race at the very end of it. They only got eliminated going into their final two games.

Starting point is 00:22:50 But there's no reason they shouldn't be able to compete and get in the playoffs. So without saying mandate, like you've got to think that if they don't make the playoffs, then what are they looking at to salvage from that duo? You know what I mean? And, you know, Shane Steichen is signed through 2028. They signed me like a six-year deal when they hired him in 2023. Ballard, this is his final year of his contract. So Stuyken's buyout will be less, you know, next year versus this offseason.

Starting point is 00:23:22 Ballard, they, you know, his contract will be up. So I have to think it becomes a lot easier to move on from those guys if, you know, if they don't make the playoffs. It's your no, and no excuses to it. like it just can't matter anymore. Yeah, something I've said as well as when, you know, you have new ownership. I know it's staying in the family,

Starting point is 00:23:42 but she kind of wants to put her stamp on things. Maybe get her guys in place. See what that looks like. That can happen sometimes when these things happen. Yeah. So Carly is a lot more practical and business minded than Jim was too. So I know some people question that because they got a lot of pushback for bringing back Shane and Chris.

Starting point is 00:24:02 but there's just like she's made a lot we she's just been around for a long time and a lot of us know kind of how she operates and she is just very practical there's a lot more black and white to her than there is you know not that it's not a family atmosphere like it still was with ursa or jim ursay but there's i feel like there's probably fewer decisions made off of the motion you know yeah yeah she's she's a little more cold and calculated with her decision making just got to be She's got a kind of carve her own path now. Yeah, it's the modern NFL. You can't be a mom and pop shop anymore.

Starting point is 00:24:37 But with that being said, Jake, thank you so much for coming on. Give us the inside perspective on the Colts. Locked on Colts. He's one half. Shout out Zach as well. You guys do a great job over there. I got to be honest,

Starting point is 00:24:47 I don't have a lot of high hopes for the Colts this year, but I didn't last year and look how they proved me wrong at the beginning of the year. So we'll see what happens there. Now I'll talk about how the games will go between these two teams and how the rosters match up. But with that being said, again, I think the Tennessee Titans are going to sweep the Colts this year. I think it's a great matchup for the Titans. Number one,

Starting point is 00:27:57 I think the Titans secondary might be a little bit shaky, but Alec Pierce is the number one wide receiver, not the number two. Josh Downs, good player, Tyler Warren, good player. I'm not going to act like they're bumps. But with Nick Westbrook-Akekekeke out there, you have Pierce who's going to be asked to do more. NW. why, who isn't near as good as Michael Pittman, Jr. That makes their situation a lot worse. And I don't really like their depth either. Ashton Doolin, Dionne Burricks, Anthony Gold.

Starting point is 00:28:26 Not that impressive. Lequant Treadwell as well. I just don't think that that's to be feared outside of Tyler Warren, Moe Alley Cox, Drew Oglesby, Will Mallory. Like, that's just not a great group of weapons, in my opinion. And, you know, Jonathan Taylor is an excellent player. But I truly don't believe that the Colts' offensive line is going to be as good as it's been in recent years.

Starting point is 00:28:48 I think the Tennessee Titans' defensive line will have a massive advantage in this one. Before it was always about, oh, can Quentin Nelson stop Jeffrey Simmons because that is the primary matchup? And if Jeffrey Simmons goes against the other guard slot, they could just double team with the center and the guard. Well, John Franklin Myers, I would put Jeffrey Simmons over Quentin Nelson,

Starting point is 00:29:07 have those two Beesco one-on-one, and then good luck with John Franklin Myers on the other side. Like, bam. And then Jalen Travis, against Caldric Falk, Jermaine Johnson, I like that matchup as well. So I don't think the Colts are going to be

Starting point is 00:29:23 as impenetrable on the offensive line as they were before. That's going to affect the run game. That's going to affect the past game. They're asking lesser weapons to do more and better roles this year. I don't think that's good. And on the other side,

Starting point is 00:29:35 what's the biggest concern with the Tennessee type? What is the number one thing that we're all concerned about with the Tennessee type? The offensive line. well, what are the Colts going to do? DeForest Buckner is a good player. I agree.

Starting point is 00:29:55 Grover Stewart is a good run stop. Who's getting older. But, Latu is good. He's not great. This ain't, you know, Miles Garrett or something like that. You know, I'm not overly fearful.

Starting point is 00:30:10 We'll have a little chip there. It'll be fine. And Arden Key's on the other side, and come on. Come on. I'll take JC LAT. them against Ardenke. I can go down to the ship with that, or Dan Moore for that matter. That's fine. That's the exact kind of match-up that Dan Moore does play well in

Starting point is 00:30:28 is a guy like Ardenkeet. So, I'm not overly worried about the trench battle, which really changes things for the Titans, changes things for the team. The Titans need to be better than the Colts this year. this is the team that they need to jump. And I talked about in the first segment, the upheaval, the tension that's going to be in the building. Like, this is an opportunity for the Titans to finally step up. You're going to have to win some games in the division.

Starting point is 00:31:06 Win both of these. They're at Indianapolis in week six. They play them again in week 15. They're spread out. Your home games in week 15. So you at minimum, at minimum should be playing your best football by the end of the year now that everybody is in their roles, knows the system,
