Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans WILL UPSET Chargers in Week 9, YAC Weapons Must Win & Run Game Opportunities Arise

Episode Date: October 30, 2025

The Tennessee Titans take on the 5-3 Los Angeles Chargers in Week 9 as massive underdogs, but this is a perfect spot for an upset for the team. To do so, the Titans will need to get the ground game go...ing on offense and rely on their YAC weapons to make plays. Tyjae Spears, Chim Dike and Chig Okonkwo in particular need to have good games against the Chargers defense. On defense, the Titans are clearly outmatched, but there are a few spots where they may get an advantage and that start on the defensive line with Dre'Mont Jones and T'Vondre Sweat. Finally, the Titans will need a little luck as well and if Justin Herbert has a bad game with some turnovers, there is an opportunity to secure a victory. Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=asc Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videos Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!PelotonLet yourself run, lift, flex, and push forward. On today's show I'm gonna tell you exactly how the Tennessee Titans can upset the Los Angeles Chargers at home. There are some obvious ways that the Tennessee Titans can get some advantages and they'll need to get a little bit lucky as well. We'll go over keys to victory, players to watch. My final predictions for this game as well. Before we dive in, do want to thank you for making Locked on Titans. Your first listen each and every day. If you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one. Nobody is putting out the consistent Tennessee Titans content that I am. So make sure that you stay locked in with the Locked on Titans podcast. But with that being said, again, I do have the Tennessee Titans pulling the upset on the Chargers this week. And it's not going to be easy, but there are some clear paths that the Tennessee Titans have to make this happen. The number one path that the Titans can take to win this game is to run the football.
Starting point is 00:02:05 And look, I know I'm asking for a lot here. The Tennessee Titans have not been a good running team this year. They're the worst running team in the NFL. But I think a lot of that has to do with the overall health of the offense and the fact that the Titans have been down by so much and so many of these games. But if they want to find a way to win here, they have to run the ball on the Chargers because that's something that other teams have been able to do as of late. Right now, the Chargers are only the 17th best run defense in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:02:35 They're giving up 112 yards per game. And something that I talked about on yesterday's crossover episode, go look at their last six games. Yes, their very last game against the Minnesota Vikings. They held the Vikings to 34 rushing yards, and that looks great. Yep, and they got Khalil Mack back, like my guy, David Droganmeyer, mentioned yesterday. But the five weeks before that, 118 rushing yards allowed, 161 rushing yards allowed, 163 rushing yards allowed, 137, 120. Like, this is a defense that can be run on.
Starting point is 00:03:13 And I know that Khalil Mack makes a big difference. He's a good player even at his age. But Khalil Mack isn't the difference between 34 rushing yards and 160. You know what I mean? Like the run deep, he isn't that impactful to where he is making up for the rest of the defense. So I think the Tennessee Titans absolutely have a chance here to get back on track in the ground game. And if you can get the ground game going, it leads to other opportunities for the Titans. And one of the biggest problems for the Titans offense the entire year.
Starting point is 00:03:46 We've talked about it, the entire season. Is there in too many third and long, too many second and tens? Like, the yards to go are the highest in the NFL, and it's just killing them. You know what I mean? Especially when you have protection issues and you have wide receivers who can't separate very well, it's going to be tough to complete third and tens, third and eights, third and elevens all the time. So if you're able to run the football and not being able to run the football this year has been maybe the prime reason for those yards, those yard to gain situations being so long.
Starting point is 00:04:22 So if the Tennessee Titans can run the football on a Chargers run defense that has been very up and down this year, that will allow them to stay out of those third and long situations, have more easy conversion opportunities, and allow them to drive the football down the field. So I think if the Tennessee Titans are able to run the football in this matchup, they're going to have a great opportunity to pull the upset. And the reality is you look at what the Chargers have done in that realm. a possibility. I am not going to sit here and tell you that it's likely. I'm not. I'm not going to pretend like it is, but I think the Titans are going to be able to do it. I think the Titans go over a hundred yards rushing this week. I think they're able to have success on the ground with the two-headed punch or the two-handed punch. How do you punch with your head? That's not very logical, but the two-handed punch of Taj Spears and Tony Pollard. And I think getting Taj Spears more involved will help as well. We'll talk more about Tajay when we get to my players to watch on offense. But the second key to victory for me is the red zone.
Starting point is 00:05:27 So the Chargers are going to move the ball, folks. They're going to move the ball. The Titans defense is not in a position to hold down Justin Herbert, his weapons, all that. That's not going to happen here. But you want to look for a weakness with this Chargers team, especially on offense. Their red zone conversion rate is 46.4%. 27th in the NFL. They are one of the worst red zone offenses in the NFL,
Starting point is 00:05:56 and I think a main reason for that is, while the Chargers' run game has been okay and they've had good moments, you know, they ran for a million yards on the Vikings last week. But the Chargers' run game hasn't been very consistent this year, and when the offenses had issues, it's because they cannot consistently run the football. And when you're in the red zone,
Starting point is 00:06:16 and you have short-yard situations, and the defensive backfield doesn't have to drop back as far because there's less field to cover that allows safeties to get back up into run fits linebackers don't have to drop back too far it's harder to run the football and harder to operate in general in the red zone and the chargers have struggled in that realm
Starting point is 00:06:35 so I think again the chargers are going to move the ball they're going to go up and down the field from the 20 to the 20 the Titans aren't going to be able to stop them there but if they can hold the chargers to some field goals instead of touchdowns It gives the Titans a great opportunity to keep this close, to stay in striking range, and ultimately pull an upset. So the Chargers' Red Zone woes on offense
Starting point is 00:07:00 are going to give the Tennessee Titans an opportunity to stay in the game if they can take advantage. The Titans' defense has just been okay in the Red Zone, 60% conversion rate on them. That's 18th in the NFL, middle of the pack, really. But I think the Titans have an opportunity here to really take advantage. And again, you hold the Chargers to some field goals in this one, you're going to have a great opportunity to win the game.
Starting point is 00:07:22 And then finally, you know, we talk about what the Titans can do on offense, run the ball, what the Titans can do on defense, win the Red Zone battle. But at the end of the day, the Titans are major underdogs here. They're going to need Justin Herbert to just play poorly. Like, there's no way around it.
Starting point is 00:07:36 They're going to need Herbert to have a bad game. And when we talk about what that means, that means that Herbert's going to give you the ball a little bit. Okay? He is a great player, top five quarterback, absolutely awesome. I've always been a guy who believed in Justin Herbert while he's been kind of a controversial topic, whether he's good, whether he isn't good.
Starting point is 00:07:55 I've always thought that Justin Herbert was a very good player. But the reality is he has to play poorly for the Titans to have a chance here. He has to miss a couple throws that lead to some third down stops. He's got to miss a couple throws that lead to some field goals in the red zone like we talked about. And he's got to give the Titans the ball a little bit. The Chargers have lost three games this year. They're five and three.
Starting point is 00:08:15 and in those three games they have lost the turnover battle 5 to 1 They're minus 3 in turnover margin on the season The Titans are only minus 4 So it's not like these two teams are all that different When the Chargers lose games is because they don't take advantage of their red zone opportunities They play bad run defense
Starting point is 00:08:41 and they lose the turnover battle So if the Titans want to beat the Chargers they're going to have to take advantage of the bad run defense. They're going to have to stop them in the red zone and they're going to have to win the turnover battle. It's that simple for the Titans and I think they can do it. Now, there are going to be some players
Starting point is 00:08:57 who will be paramount to the Titans pulling off this upset and we'll talk about the offense and the defense players that I'm looking for right now. Do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by Mazda's moving the game forward moment of the week And for those who believe it's not just about playing the game, it's about redefining it. There are moments that do more than put points on the board.
Starting point is 00:09:21 They move crowds, they move culture, and they keep the game moving forward. This week's moment that move the game forward is the performance of Jim D.K. The Titans' fourth round rookie wide receiver out of Florida had seven catches, 93 yards. He's number five in the NFL over the last two weeks in receiving yards with 163, having a bit of a breakout and that comes on top of the performance that he's putting on on special teams where he leads the NFL in all-purpose yards. Chim D-K has been absolutely fantastic in that regard
Starting point is 00:09:55 as a special teams player, as a wide receiver now he's starting to step up. He is truly moving his game forward even if it hasn't resulted in wins for the Tennessee Titans. But when you follow what moves you, the unexpected is only the beginning and just like there's more to every highlight, There's more to a Mazda vehicle. It's Mazda move and be moved.

Starting point is 00:11:34 We are doing a game preview episode here. I went over my keys to victory. Now I want to get into my players to watch again. I do think the Tennessee Titans pull an upset. In this game, I'm going to give you my game and score prediction, my gambling advice, my fantasy stuff at the end of the show. But let's talk about these players to watch. And we'll start on the offensive side of the ball.
Starting point is 00:11:52 And as I mentioned earlier, Taj Spears is going to be critical in this game. He's my number one player to watch. We're seeing him start to get back into a rhythm here, start to make plays. Had a super explosive run, the longest run on the season for the Titans last week. And I think that Tajay Spears is ideally suited to take advantage of this Los Angeles Chargers defense. The Chargers, as I talked about on yesterday's crossover episode, the 10th worst team in the NFL in yards after catch allowed. The Chargers are a good pass defense.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Make no mistake about it. I'm not saying they're a bad past defense. But what I'm telling you is where they are vulnerable is yards after catch. You can make a couple guys miss. They don't have guys that are super quick in the back end of the defense. The linebacker group outside of Dayon Henley, the defensive backfield without a guy like Derwin James, Harheed still is banged up.
Starting point is 00:12:44 A lot of their good players are not out there. And even if they were, it's not an overly fast defensive backfield. We know a guy like Elijah Molden, who's carved out a really nice role there with the Chargers in the few years since the Titans have traded him, really good player. But Molden is not a fast guy. He's not a speedster by any means. We know that Denzel Perryman and an older veteran linebacker is not a speedster. He's a heavy-handed, you know, run-stopping type guy.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Deion Henley, yes. great speed for a linebacker, very athletic, no mistake about that. But I think there's a great opportunity for the Titans to take advantage of the lack of speed and the back end of the defense of the Los Angeles Chargers. Now, do I think the Titans will be able to attack downfield with that speed? No, I don't, because the Chargers are so good, playing their too high coverages, backing off, not letting anybody have anything deep. They're not a team that's going to give up a ton of explosive plays down the field in the passing game.
Starting point is 00:13:40 But, and this is beneficial to Cam Ward, you can dump it off short, you can make a guy miss, and then you can take advantage. And I think Taj Spears getting the ball out of the backfield, dumping it off on a screen, motion into a quick swing pass. I think those things can really help the Titans. And I think Cam Ward really has to be dialed in to dumping down to his checkdowns. And it goes past Taj Spears, but I think Spears is ideally equipped to take advantage of this opportunity. Again, 10th worst team in the NFL and yards after catch, yardage allowed.
Starting point is 00:14:13 So that's something that Tajay Spears should be able to take advantage of. But Chim DK. We just talked about Chim DK. Having a little bit of a mini breakout here, okay? Showing that he's more than just a returner. He's a guy who can make plays as a wide receiver. And with Calvin Ridley, still not practicing, probably not going to play in this game.
Starting point is 00:14:35 The lack of weapons that the Titans have, the lack of speed that the Titans have, offense I think D.K. has a chance to do something awesome this week and getting him involved in the quick stuff and I don't mean just wide receiver quick screen. Let's get him on some short drags across the field. I thought last week we saw some very interesting stuff where what the Titans have done at times this year is they've had a wide receiver as a wing back right past the tight end off the line of scrimmage and then on run plays the Titans have slid that wide receiver into the C gap in between the tight end and the offensive tackle. Last week, the Titans did that off of play action with Chim Dike, but instead of block it, of course, because it's play action, he actually got into a drag route into the flat. And the Titans were able to dump it off to him.
Starting point is 00:15:20 He was able to make a guy miss, break a tackle, and get up the field for a 20-yard gain. I think that's the type of thing that the Titans are going to have to do with Chim D.K. They're going to have to get creative with getting him opportunities on linebackers, on safeties to use that 4-3 speed, create yards after-catch opportunities. And that helps Cam Ward get the ball out of his hands. quicker as well when you're trying to design short routes, a little bit different, some of these longer developing things
Starting point is 00:15:44 that have to go down field. So I think those two players specifically have a great opportunity to take advantage of yards after catch opportunities. I want to throw Chigaconquo's name in there as well. You guys know I'm high on Gunner Helm, I'm the big Gunner Helm guy, but I think Chigacanquo could actually have a huge game this week in the same situations as Tage Spears,
Starting point is 00:16:04 little dump-offs, little checkdowns, one-on-one with a linebacker headed to the outside. I think that Chigacanquo could take advantage of those opportunities. But my final player to watch here is J.C. Latham has rebounded a little bit after that bad first game back against Max Crosby. Been pretty good in the last two weeks against the Patriots. And then last week he was really good against the Colts. I think J.C. Latham has his hands full here against Khalil Mack. Mack is nothing to play with.
Starting point is 00:16:33 He's a good player. been one of the best edge rushers of my lifetime. But last week we saw Kaleel Mack line up majority on that side where he's going to be taking on J.C. Latham. Now, Kaleo Mac has the ability to move around. You look through so far this season and the limited stats that he's played.
Starting point is 00:16:50 He's played on the left. He's played on the right. He's moved around a ton. But I think that when Latham gets opportunities against Kalea Mac, Mac isn't a speed rusher and speed is what gives J.C. Latham problems. So I think if Latham is ready to and on his best behavior, he's going to be able to deal with the power of Khalil Mack
Starting point is 00:17:08 and being able to slow down Khalil Mack. Look, the Chargers pass rush is okay. You know what I mean? It's just okay. Too will... I struggle so hard to say the Polynesian names. It's just an issue on my scouting report. Tuipalutu, and then, you know,
Starting point is 00:17:26 you have Bud Dupree as well, who... You guys know I'm not a big fan of Bud Dupree. He can be a physical fourth rusher that plays with effort, but he's not going to like win with pass rush moves consistently. So I just don't fear, I don't fear the Chargers pass rush talent outside of Khalil Matt. So if you can get J.C. Latham to shut him down, maybe Mac moves over to Dan Moore. You can help Dan Moore a little bit.
Starting point is 00:17:51 Dan Moore's been fine this year, quite honestly, he's been just fine. So I think that offensive tackle matchup, specifically J.C. Latham, who is not played as well as Dan Moore as of late. That's just the reality. If Latham can hold down the ford on his side, whether it's against Khalil Mack or against somebody, Addafe O.A, you have to, he's a good player. Got to mention him who they acquired in trade. If Latham can hold down his end of the bargain, I think Cam Ward will have time to make plays. Now on the defensive side of the ball, the players I'm watching mostly on the defensive line. Draymont Jones has had three sacks in three weeks, one sack in each of the last three games, really got things going here.
Starting point is 00:18:31 really the only Titans edge rusher right now that is consistently making plays and Jihad Ward still be out there maybe he can do something you know what I mean but the Titans are obviously very very thin at edge rusher so they're going to need even more from Draymont Jones and the reality is we wait to see exactly how healthy the Chargers offensive line is with a guy like Trey Pipkins who's probably going to start if everything goes well for the Chargers but you could see Bobby Hart in there which is kind of crazy to say in the big 20, 25, that Bobby Hart is out there starting games. Bobby Hart actually hasn't played that poorly for the Chargers and the limited opportunities that he has got.
Starting point is 00:19:11 But Trey Pipkins, on the other hand, is second on the team and allowed pressures with 17. Bradley Bozeman, the center, has allowed 21 pressures the most on the team. So I think there are some areas of opportunity, the Chargers' offensive line. When the Chargers have played their bad games, it's because their offensive line is not played well. Now, a lot of that came with Joe Oll and Trey Pepkins out of the lineup where they were playing two backup tackles. That's not going to be the case here. Joe Oll is going to be starting and is going to be playing.
Starting point is 00:19:39 So you're probably not going to get many opportunities to win against him because he's an all-time talent who's going to be a Hall of Famer. But Draymont Jones against Pipkins, Draymont Jones against Hart, I expect Draymont Jones to win a little bit of that. And if he could throw that inside spin move on those guys after getting them to overset wide, I think that'll give him an opportunity to put some pressure
Starting point is 00:19:58 on Justin Herber. Again, Bradley Bozeman, not a great interior player. I think Tavondre Sweat, who is my second player to watch on the defensive side of the ball, has to dominate. And, you know, we haven't talked about the run game of the Chargers because I just don't think it's, I don't think it's that important. I think the Chargers could not run the ball at all and still have a chance to beat the Titans because Justin Herbert and his weapons are so good. But at the end of the day, Tavondre Sweat has the ability to blow up the interior
Starting point is 00:20:25 of the Los Angeles Chargers offensive lines. and if he's able to do that, that interior pressure on Justin Herbert could create some turnover opportunities. So I'm looking at Dremont Jones against the backup right tackle or, you know, if it's PIPC, well, it'll still be a backup because technically alt is their starting right tackle when Slater was their starting left. So no matter what, it's their backup offensive tackle.
Starting point is 00:20:46 But a backup offensive tackle on the right-hand side of Dremont Jones can take advantage there, and Tavondre Sweat can win quite consistently. Tavondre Sweat's been the Titans' highest-graded player per pro football focused and back-to-back. weeks. I don't think it's been as good as the grading, in my opinion, from what I've seen, especially in run defense and anchoring down and holding your gap. But nonetheless, he's a talented player. The Titans need him to ball out. And if he can shut down the run and then
Starting point is 00:21:10 get some pressure in the past, helping Draymont Jones from the outside, the Titans have a chance to create some of those turnover opportunities and put Justin Herbert under pressure where four of his six interceptions have come. Um, finally, Amani Hooker. Hooker has been terrible this year. absolutely awful and this week he's going to have to step up all right number one Xavier Woods might be out in this game which means we're going to see more Kevin Winston
Starting point is 00:21:36 but I don't think Kevin Winston is ready to play the big nickel role which is the slot cornerback on early downs and I don't think he's ready to play the dime package linebacker role just yet I think they want Kevin Winston in the back end playing zone defenses hanging back using his speed to cover the field Amani Hooker is slowed down significantly so if I'm Amani Hooker or I'm the Titans I'm going to have Amani Hooker as the big nickel because Xavier Woods is usually that guy,
Starting point is 00:22:00 and he might be injured and out for this game. Quandre Diggs isn't fast enough. They don't trust Kevin Winston to be up that close with all those responsibilities. So I think Amani Hooker will slide to the big nickel. He'll slide to a guy who can take on Arande Gadsden, the rookie tight end who's breaking out right now for the Chargers. I think if Ammoni Hooker has a good week,
Starting point is 00:22:17 it gives the Titans defense a great opportunity to do what they need to do to get this win. But with that being said, again, I do think the Tennessee Titans pull the upset. I'm going to give you my score prediction, my gambling, my fantasy advice as well. It's locked on Titans, your team every day. Starting point is 00:23:54 Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. We talked about my keys to victory. We've talked about my players to watch on both sides of the ball. Now it's time to get into some of my predictions, some of my guesses for this game. We will start with my game and score prediction before we dive in. Thanks again for making Locked on Titans your first listen each and every day. And happy Halloween. I'm dressing up as an optimistic Titans fan.
Starting point is 00:24:23 and I think the Tennessee Titans win this game 23 to 20. I talked about it. I think the Tennessee Titans will be able to run the football. I think that gives Cam Ward easier opportunities. I think the yards after catch opportunities that the Chargers will give the Titans also make it easier on Cam Ward. I think we could look back and this could be a breakout game for Cam Ward in a sense. But really, I think it's about everything else helping him around.
Starting point is 00:24:50 I think the Chargers pass rush doesn't scare me as much as some previous pass rushes have. The Chargers run defense we have talked about is susceptible to some games. I think the yards after catch opportunity means Kim Ward can dump it all short, get the ball out of his hands, and still have big opportunities and explosive plays. I think everything about that goes towards giving the Titans a great opportunity to get something done here. Now, the defensive side of the ball is going to be tough. But again, I go back to what we said earlier, the Red Zone defense. I think the Tennessee Titans have the chance to force the Chargers to some field goals here,
Starting point is 00:25:25 and that's what I think happens. I think out of four Red Zone opportunities, the Chargers only get two touchdowns, they get two field goals, and I think the Tennessee Titans make a big play on special teams with Chim D.K. in the return game, and I think it sets the Titans up for an easy touchdown where the Titans only score, you know, one touchdown on offense, but they get, well, two touchdowns on offense, but one of them is set up easily by a special teams play, a turnover play. The Titans are able to get that
Starting point is 00:25:52 and get a couple more field goals on the board. I think the Tennessee Titans win this game. They're going into their buy after that. This would be exactly what the Titans need. And quite frankly, the Chargers are a team that, you know, I do lock on NFL where I cover the entire league nationally. And the Chargers are one of those teams
Starting point is 00:26:07 when I'm looking at the league as a whole that I just, I don't know that I trust to always play their best. At the end of the day, the Chargers are going to charge. And the Titans have played close games with the Chargers as a lot. late in Tennessee. There have been some close matchups as well. So I know that things are slanted very much to the chargers, but I actually think the Titans pull off the upset this week. Now with that
Starting point is 00:26:31 in mind, we go to keeping it plus 100. Right now, the line on Fandul Sportsbook is plus 9.5. I would slam that plus 9.5. That's too many points to give up to the Titans at home. But the reality is, I like the Titans money line here. Plus 370 on the money line, which means if you You bet $100, you'd win $370. That's great value for the Titans at home. Again, if you're not as confident in the Titans winning the game, I get it. I understand the plus 9.5 looks absolutely juicy. But at the end of the day, I do think the Titans win this game.
Starting point is 00:27:09 So I'm going Titans money line plus 370. Over under is 43 and a half. I have my score at 43. You guys know, I tell you every week. over unders. I don't play them. I don't like them. I'm not good at them. Also, one of the big things in life folks is self-awareness. You gotta know what you're not good at, what you are good at, what you need to improve on, and what you're never going to get better at. Like there are just things that are just not for,
Starting point is 00:27:37 not everything is for everybody. There are certain things that people are never going to get better at no matter how hard they try. For me, it's musical instruments. I could play guitar 100 hours a day for 100 years and I would suck at playing a guitar. It's not for me. I wasn't made to do it. I feel the same about over unders. I suck at them. I don't get them right. I don't understand. It's not for me. But I will take the Tennessee Titans money line. Now finally for my beautiful dark twisted fantasy player of the game, my fantasy sleeper. I'm going to Tajay Spears. So last week I went with Gunner Helm. I said he would get his first touchdown catch of the year. And hey, I had a couple of you guys reach out to me like, hey, good call on Gunner Helm. And I
Starting point is 00:28:19 did say that once earlier in the season, I think against the Texans or the Colts in week three or four. I said I thought Gunnardell will get his first touchdown of the year. I was wrong about that, but hey, came back, realized, good matchup, good opportunity. Here we goes, National Tide End Day, and that's what happened. But for me, this time, I'm going with Tage Spears. I think Tage Spears has over 100 total yards, and I think he scores a touchdown in this game. I think Spears is going to take a quick screen, a slip screen for a running back, something peculiar, maybe a trick play of some kind. I think Tajay Spears is going to break a big play and score a touchdown in this one.
Starting point is 00:28:54 So Tajay Spears is my guy who is my beautiful dark, twisted fantasy player of the week. So whether you're in a season long and you've got some buys or your double flex league, something like that, I think Tajay makes a ton of sense. And if you're playing daily fantasy and you're looking for a value pick so you can stack the rest of your lineup, I think that Tajay Spears would be a great option there as well. But with that being said, let me know down below whether you think the Tennessee Titans will win this game. Again, happy Halloween, everybody stay safe out there. With that being said, that's going to do it for me today, folks.
Starting point is 00:29:27 As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
