Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast. I'm your host, Tyler Rowland. Titans fans, I am still coming down off that awesome Colts win. Watched the game a few more times and really enjoyed the game plan that the Titans put together and what they tried to do against the Colts. Thought it worked spectacularly and as we talked about yesterday, really exciting to see all three phases of the football team make a major contribution in multiple games in a row here. Really gives every player on the roster confidence that they will be able to make a play for the team come Sunday. Everyone pulls their weight. So those type of victories really, as a football purist, really get me excited.
Starting point is 00:00:40 So we're going to talk a little bit about that today. I want to kind of put a spotlight on two individual players. First, we're going to talk a little bit about that today. I want to kind of put a spotlight on two individual players. First, we're going to talk some more Ryan Tannehill. What a story he is. And not just him playing well, but at this moment in time, is he the NFL's comeback player of the year? In our first segment, we're going to talk about his prospects for winning that award and who his competition might be when it's time to actually vote. In our second segment, it is Tick-Tack Tuesday, Titans fans.
Starting point is 00:01:09 So we are going to step in the film room, break down some X's and O's, and talk about Harold Landry and how he impacted the game on Sunday with his pressure on Jacoby Brissett. So we will talk about that in our second segment. I'm going to talk about Harold Landry's plays as we always do, but I also just want to talk schematically about what the Titans did on defense. It was pretty impressive, and we've got to give a shout-out to Dean Pease and all the players on defense that made that game plan possible.
Starting point is 00:01:36 In our third segment, as I always do on Tuesdays, I'm going to play you Mike Vrabel's day after press conference so you can hear directly from the coach after he's had an opportunity to review the tape as well. Really excited to jump into all of it with you guys. Let's get it. Your Tennessee Titans lead story is Ryan Tannehill's push for comeback player of the year in the NFL. I think that at this moment in time, he has a pretty good case to be made. There is some decent competition for the award, but I would consider it a down year in terms of the candidates for comeback player of the year.
Starting point is 00:02:21 So let's take a look at what Ryan Tannehill has done so far on the season and see how he compares to some other possible candidates. Looking at Tannehill's numbers so far in the six games that he has started now he has a 72 percent completion percentage has thrown for 1,602 yards his 12 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, 3 rushing touchdowns, and a 113.9 quarterback rating. But it's not just the stats that tell the story. He's done it in an impressive way. He has 3 game-winning drives, 2 fourth-quarter comebacks, has run for 9 first downs with his legs when the Titans needed it most, and delivered when the game was on the line.
Starting point is 00:03:04 The Titans now sit at 5-1 with Ryan Tannehill. And while there are four games left in the season, and those four games will ultimately be calculated into whether or not he is a true candidate for the Comeback Player of the Year award, as I mentioned, with the candidates and the competition at hand, it seems like he has a pretty good shot if he continues this stellar play and is able to get the Tennessee Titans into the playoffs. Jimmy Garoppolo is a candidate against him.
Starting point is 00:03:32 He's the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. They are a 10-2 ball club. He's thrown for 2,869 yards, 21 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 69% completion rate. And he is coming off of, like I said, an ACL tear. So that gives him a definite possibility there. But being on the type of team that he's on, having the supporting cast that he has, being able to come back and get a full offseason in, seems like that kind of takes away some of the shine of his comeback award viability. If you know what I'm saying there. He had most of
Starting point is 00:04:08 the season to come back from that. Hasn't really had any adversity in season so far with that injury. He was able to come back pretty quick because he tore it in week three of last season. Darren Waller, the tight end for the Oakland Raiders, is a possible candidate. He's not coming off of any kind of injury, but he has dealt with two lengthy suspensions due to drug abuse. So he's come back from a drug addiction issue, a full 16 game suspension in 2017 and has showed out for the Raiders this year, 66 catches, 807 yards and three touchdowns so definitely a possibility there as well Cooper Cup has come off an ACL injury but he has looked fantastic so far for the Rams as a wide receiver 73 catches 945 yards six touchdowns and then the last candidate that I wanted to mention was an
Starting point is 00:04:58 offensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles their guard Brandon Brooks he came off an Achilles injury late last season and has been one of the better offensive linemen in the NFL, graded out per PFF or wherever you want to use your offensive line measurements. He's been one of the better linemen in the league. The Eagles run the ball about 118 yards per game. That's 13th best in the league. They've only given up 30 sacks, which is 18th in the NFL so the Eagles offensive line is still performing at a pretty high level and he is one of the main reasons for it and an Achilles injury if you know anyone who suffered that or you've seen multiple professional athletes that
Starting point is 00:05:35 at this point in time is almost more dangerous and tougher to come back from than an ACL injury at this moment in time so you have to give props to those four candidates. There are a couple other people sprinkled in there as well who you could give some love to. But when you look at everything that Ryan Tannehill has come back from, it was an ACL in 2017. It was the shoulder in 2018. It was getting traded and being a backup when you've been a starter for your entire time in the NFL. All of these different little pieces of adversity going against Ryan Tannehill, and he's able to overcome them and be one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL since he got the opportunity to start. So at this moment in time, I would consider Ryan Tannehill the clubhouse leader for comeback player of the year. We saw something similar with Phillip Rivers
Starting point is 00:06:20 in 2016. He got it just from coming back from a bunch of interceptions the year before. So it doesn't always have to be injury. It can be circumstances like getting traded, getting put on the bench for the first time in your career. You combine that with the ACL in 2017, the shoulder in 2018, and Miami generally giving up on him. With the fact that he's playing so well, and it makes sense that he would have an opportunity to win that award. That is going to do it for our first segment though. We are going to jump into our second segment. Step into the film room with me. We will break down some X's and O's in this week's Tick Tack Tuesday and I will show you exactly how Harold Landry who has completely overshot his
Starting point is 00:07:00 draft position totally impacted the game on Sunday and caused a lot of the havoc that you saw the Titans defense wreak out there so we are going to jump into that next before we do jump into that though I want to remind you guys that away creates thoughtful products designed to change how you see the world for $20 off a suitcase visit away travel.com locked on and use promo code locked on during checkout. As I said in the first segment, I'm going to cover Harold Landry here and talk about his impact on the game yesterday and how he was able to help out everybody around him. It's going to allow me to highlight some of the other players on the defense
Starting point is 00:09:06 and their contributions as well, because obviously everything is interconnected here. But Harold Landry definitely gets the defense going in a right direction. But one thing I did want to mention is just schematically speaking from yesterday's game, really, really impressed with the type of blitzes and the pressures that Dean Pease was calling and the defense was able to run. We saw a lot of Logan Ryan coming off one side and then a linebacker dropping into coverage on the opposite side or we saw Kenny Vaccaro playing as a middle linebacker with the linebackers up on the line of scrimmage and him bringing pressure up the middle on a delayed blitz. A couple of times the Titans had some pressures called, and Rashawn Evans was responsible
Starting point is 00:09:48 for the running back. Once he saw the running back stayed in the block, he went in and had a delayed blitz that caused problems. So a lot of different packages and a lot of different pressures the Titans were running out of zone coverage, out of man coverage, where they would have one safety over the top, Kevin Byard covering anything deep everybody else is in man with one linebacker underneath with that responsibility I talked about earlier with Rashawn so generally speaking just really
Starting point is 00:10:16 impressed by the zone blitzes the man blitzes the the different types of pressures bringing Logan from the corner bringing Kenny Vaccaro up the middle, just all the different things that Dean Pease was doing to confuse Jacoby Brissett. And it's something that we talked about on Friday, that we would expect the Titans to blitz heavily, make Brissett get on the move, prove that his knee is healthy. And ultimately, his lack of mobility, I think, caused him to panic a little bit and throw some of those interceptions and make some of those mistakes. So really impressive by Dean Pease and the coaching staff on defense. So I just wanted to highlight that first
Starting point is 00:10:48 before we jumped into our four plays to talk about Harold Landry. With that being said, let's jump into play one of our deep dive on Harold Landry. So there's about two minutes and 20 seconds left in the first quarter here. It's a very big third and one for the Colts. They are on their side of the field. Look to be at about the 32-yard line here. So, Jacoby Brissett takes the snap from under center, and the Titans are in a man concept. So, you have Logan Ryan, Adory Jackson, Ty Smith, Kenny Vaccaro, and Jayon Brown all manned up with a Colts skill position player. Rashawn Evans is kind of playing like a middle zone but also spying on Brissette. Now this is just a good example of how Harold Landry is relentless but it also allows me to kind of shine a light on the other players on
Starting point is 00:11:38 the defense. This is excellent man coverage from the Titans on a third and one where clearly they were expecting a run. The Titans defenders stay plastered on the Colts players and don't allow any of them to get separation to give Brissette an easy throw. This is supposed to be a quick hitch throw. Brissette's supposed to hit a quick three-step drop, quick five-step drop, and get rid of the ball. He's unable to do that. Jeffrey Simmons completely bulls over Quentin Nelson.
Starting point is 00:12:03 Love every second of that. Something I talked about on Twitter yesterday. And what it kind of allows here is Brissette has to get out of the pocket because the play doesn't go as designed. The man coverage is too tight. So he starts to roll out to his right, right into Harold Landry, who is fighting with Colts right tackle Braden Smith, fighting with him, fighting with him.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Eventually, as he sees Brissette rolling out to his right, he disengages, runs straight at him. Brissette runs out of time or he's going to take the sack, and he just throws the ball five yards in front of him down into the ground. Incompletion, fourth and one. Now, why is stuff like this so important? It's early in the game. You know, there are so many plays after that.
Starting point is 00:12:44 But what happens here is the Colts actually line up to go for it on fourth and one. They get a false start penalty on their center, Ryan Kelly, which turns it into a fourth and six, which loses their ability to go for it. Also pushes the field goal back. We know that Adam Vinatieri has really struggled this year. If you've been following the league whatsoever. So a 55-yard field goal from a really, really old kicker who's been struggling all year, that's easy money for the Titans. He misses, goes wide right, no points on the board. Harold Landry right there saves the Titans three points. Really, really excellent play from Harold on that first play. Let's jump to our second play here, and we are going to be jumping all the way to the third quarter on the opening drive for the
Starting point is 00:13:25 Indianapolis Colts. There's about 14 minutes and 30 seconds left in the third quarter. The Colts have just gotten the ball out of halftime. They are up 10-7 at this moment in time. So really important that the Titans continue to get pressure on Brissette and make him uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the Colts were able to go down and score on this possession to put themselves up 17-7, but I do want to highlight here Harold Landry's relentlessness, and this was his sack on the day. So the Colts go to run a wide receiver screen,
Starting point is 00:13:58 and remember I said earlier, some of these plays give me the opportunity to highlight other players on the defense. I just want to say that the Colts line up in shotgun here and try to run a wide receiver screen to one of their running backs, who's Naheem Hines, who's kind of out on the left side as a wide receiver. They try to run a quick screen like what the Titans run, where the one other wide receiver blocks and then they send the tackle out to get the other defensive back. Well, this play is going to hit for a lot.
Starting point is 00:14:27 If I could show you the still that I'm showing myself right now, Anthony Costanzo, the left tackle of the Colts, has basically Kareem Orr dead to rights. It could be Ty Smith at this moment in time just based on the still here. But essentially he's got a Titans defensive back dead to rights outside. It's two on two in terms of blocking. Zach Pascal is blocking Logan Ryan, and then Costanzo is going to get out on the other defensive back.
Starting point is 00:14:53 And there's literally nobody else out there. So if the Colts hit this and complete this and execute this properly, this is going to be a huge play. Well, Logan Ryan fights through the block of Zach Pascal, and basically Brissette has to hold the ball. He can't make the throw. He's got to pull it back because Logan Ryan may intercept the pass, or it's just going to go badly.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Anyway, Brissette can tell early it's going to go bad because Logan Ryan fights through a block and basically ruins this play design, and it looks like it's going to be a pretty solid play. So you have to be disappointed if you're the Colts not being able to hit this but what a beautiful play by Logan Ryan to fight through the block and I'll show this remember I'm going to post all the visuals for these on Twitter at Tic Tac Titans so please follow me there to kind of marry that up with this audio breakdown but essentially what that does is that causes a delay in the play there's nowhere really to go Brissette
Starting point is 00:15:43 his only option from this moment in time is to try to tuck it and maybe run and get some. He essentially just gives up on the play, dives down on the ground. Harold Landry has just recently beat his man and is there to just fall on top of Brissette and take the sack. So while we're showing Harold Landry and I want to show that he got another sack on the year, I do want to use the opportunity to show what the other guys on the defense are doing to make it possible the opportunity to show what the other guys on the defense are doing to make it possible for him to rack up these numbers. So this is a good example of how Logan Ryan in the secondary
Starting point is 00:16:11 is actually more responsible for the sack than Harold Landry, but he'll be the one who cleans up and gets the statistic to show his impact, though. But he was the first person there, and without Harold Landry meeting Brissette and putting that pressure on him, who knows if he's able to cut up the field and maybe get some more positive yardage so great play by Harold Landry but also a great play by Logan Ryan there as well we will jump to play three which is also going to be in the third quarter here the Colts do have the ball and at this moment in time they are up 17 to 14 so this is a really big moment in this game where the Titans have just responded with a touchdown.
Starting point is 00:16:47 But now they need to find a way to stop this Colts offense who came out in their first drive of the second half and scored immediately. So it's not a given right now that the Titans defense is going to be able to stop this Colts offense. So it's 1st and 10 from the 25. It is the first play of the Colts drive after the Titans score. Huge momentum shifting play here. So what we're going to see is a regular standard four-man rush. The Titans are going to be in a man coverage again. Harold Landry uses a great, it's hard to tell whether it's a design stunt or just the way that it looks, but at this moment in time, it looks like it is a design stunt. You have Daquan Jones as your left
Starting point is 00:17:30 defensive tackle. You have Jarrell Casey as the other defensive tackle. Jeffrey Simmons is going to be your left side defensive end, and Harold Landry is going to be on your edge on your right side. Well, what we'll see here is at the very last moment before the snap, Daquan Jones and Jarrell Casey shift to the left so that Jarrell Casey is kind of splitting the center and the right guard, or I apologize, Daquan Jones is splitting the center and the right guard and Jarrell Casey is splitting the left guard in the center. And what they do is they fire out at their man, and then all of a sudden, they both go to the right. Daquan and Casey kind of twist in the middle,
Starting point is 00:18:12 and that bunches up all the interior offensive linemen, and then Harold Landry goes right off the butt of Daquan Jones and Jarrell Casey up the middle. The center for the Colts doesn't slide over to pick up Harold Landry as he's looping underneath, and that causes Jacoby Brissett to have Harold Landry in his face and panic and just throw the ball up into the middle. Kevin Byard is right there to intercept it because of course he is always there when the Titans need a big play. The Titans go down. They're able to get into the red zone here, get a field goal, tie the game, and totally play. The Titans go down. They're able to get into the red zone here, get a field goal, tie the game,
Starting point is 00:18:47 and totally change the momentum of the game. It gives the defense hope that they're going to be able to get stops here in the second half. So that's our play three. Harold Landry has made an incredible impact. He's had a sack. He's caused an interception. And we're going to keep going forward
Starting point is 00:19:00 and show how he continued to make plays into the fourth quarter. Two minutes and 33 seconds left here. The Titans are up 31-17. Now, can the Titans put people away with their pass rush when they do have a lead? That's something that as the team evolves, we want to see them go from good to great. Can the Titans' pass rush put teams away? So, something really nice here that I wanted to highlight is the games that the Titans defensive line are playing. That's something that you'll hear Mike Vrabel say a game here. So what
Starting point is 00:19:31 the Titans do here is they rush four people. You have Sheree Finch on the right hand side edge. You have Harold Landry on the left hand side edge. And in the middle, you have Rashawn Evans closest to Harold Landry and Isaiah Mack as kind of the nose tackle here. What we're going to see is Rashawn Evans is at the left defensive tackle spot. He kind of loops all the way around to take Naheem Hines and man coverage from his defensive line position. Sheree Finch rushes. What I want to point out is what Isaiah Mack and Harold Landry do here. So as I mentioned before, Isaiah Mack kind of pushes from his nose tackle position all the way towards the offensive tackle that is blocking Harold Landry.
Starting point is 00:20:11 What this causes is the center, the guard, and the tackle now have to communicate who's gonna pick up who as they switch men. Well, Isaiah Mack goes all the way out to the offensive tackle. The guard expects to kind of push Isaiah Mack towards the tackle, but when the tackle goes to take Isaiah Mack, he lets off a little too early. The guard who was blocking Isaiah Mack originally and who needs to take Harold Landry
Starting point is 00:20:38 as Harold Landry twists inside is unable to do so. Harold Landry kind of fits in between the crease of the offensive tackle and the guard who aren't reacting quick enough. This is something that really hurts the Titans offensive line that I mention all the time and it got them a lot in this game in the first half as well, but that gives Harold Landry just a crease between the offensive tackle and the offensive guard. He slides through, gets right up into the face of Jacoby Brissett, which forces another incompletion. So, I know the game is quite out of hand here, but this is what we need to see from the Titans' pass rush.
Starting point is 00:21:11 They need to be able to close games down, put pressure on the opposing offense when it's a guaranteed passing situation, a comeback situation, especially late in the game. Smother these teams with the pass rush. Do not let them get anything going to think that they have a chance to come back so Harold Landry after the play also looks like to be telling Jacoby Brissett hold on just hold on to the ball for one more second you know Harold Landry wants to get these sack numbers boosted up and I mean why wouldn't he he wants to prove everything everything that he's been doing and all the hard work that he's been putting in that it's working and obviously players love to get those stats and get them on the board and I love to see him rack up those stats been doing and all the hard work that he's been putting in that it's working and obviously players
Starting point is 00:21:45 love to get those stats and get them on the board and I love to see him rack up those stats as well so more sacks coming from Harold Landry he's only improving as a second year player and we see here how with the help of the other talent on the defense he's able to really impact other offenses so that's going to do it for our Tic Tac Titans Tic Tac Tuesday segment this week. I will obviously, as I mention all the time, will be putting up the visuals to go with this breakdown on my Twitter at Tic Tac Titans. So please follow me there so you can see that.
Starting point is 00:22:16 We are going to jump into our third segment. I'm going to let you hear from Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel's day after press conference after he has had an opportunity to review the tape and get his takes on the game from Sunday. Titans talk. Let's hear, as we always do on Tuesdays, from Mike Vrabel's day after press conference. I want to make sure I play that for you guys
Starting point is 00:22:50 so you can hear all his insights after he's had an opportunity to watch the tape. As always, audio is courtesy of TitansOnline.com. Yeah, we have to get open, and we have to protect, and we have to get rid of the football when it's not there. I mean, it's, you know, we get to go through all these and break them down. And, you know, sometimes we're all included. When we run the football successfully, it's 11 guys operating. And when we throw the football efficiently, it's 11 guys operating.
Starting point is 00:23:20 And when we don't do those things, there's a breakdown somewhere. And every sack is not going to be on the offensive line. Every sack's not going to be on the quarterback and every sack's not going to be because we didn't get open. We certainly have to make sure that we protect our quarterback, to make sure that we get open in man coverage and we run great routes in zone. And then when it's not there, we have to understand the journey's over and get rid of it and make sure that we're not, you know, fumbling the football. Well, I think it's first of all is identifying players that aren't front runners by nature to bring in here.
Starting point is 00:23:54 I think those are the type of people that you, you know, have to identify because some of those guys, it's going to be hard to change their mentality. Now, then it's my job or our job here to instill that in them, understanding that games are going to be close. They're going to be tightly contested, most division games. That's just how this league is designed to be. It keeps people watching. At the end of the year, there's a bunch of teams that can make
Starting point is 00:24:25 the playoffs. There's a lot of things that happen in this league that's supposed to be geared towards parity. And so that brings in the situations that happen every week. I think you have to be really good in situational football and not have any panic involved in you and stay the course and be consistent and understanding that a few plays are going to make the difference in the football game. Okay. I mean, I think that you saw some good things and some things that we need to clean up and improve on.
Starting point is 00:24:53 But, you know, Ty finishing that play at the end of the game was a huge play. It was a physical play. You know, Ty did not turn down contact whatsoever. He went in there and looked for contact. He hammered the football out. And, you know, us recovering that football, Kamalei you could see almost overreacting that he got it, was what enabled us to challenge that call there.
Starting point is 00:25:20 Supposed to be ready to go. That's why we practice, and we have these guys here. That's why we go back to the practice squad. It's so critical that these guys, you know, we try to give them a card, but we just try to also make them say, hey, here's what coverage you're playing. Here's the defense. Here's the technique. Go play so that these guys can go against our receivers,
Starting point is 00:25:41 the linemen can go against our linemen, and that that's their way to improve. And we've had a number of those guys do that, not only this year and last year. And Ty and Kareem are some of those guys. I think you see Khalif that was doing that, was running routes and getting open in practice and improving. You know, I think that Kari Blazingame was doing that in Minnesota and trying to improve. There's only so many reps to go around, and so you try to get ready for the game in different ways. I think that their job here is not just to run a card.
Starting point is 00:26:18 It's not just to be a body. It's that we think that you, if on Friday or Saturday, need to get called up, you're responsible for the game plan at your position. And you may or may not be activated, but it's your job to be ready to go and prepare that on special teams responsibilities or in offense and defense responsibilities that you're ready to go. And there's been a number of examples where that's happened. And guys can jump in there and be a backup and be up on game day. I don't think that we've always tried to embrace different aspects of our offense. I mean, just because we've had a little bit more success, maybe we've blocked a little better, maybe we've run a little better
Starting point is 00:27:02 and we've been able to get to it by a number of circumstances, the nature of the game, how the game's going. We have to take care of the football, and there's some things that we have to fix and clean up, but I know those guys take a lot of pride in blocking, working on the edge, receivers blocking, tight ends working in combination with tackles. And, again, everybody's just trying to improve.
Starting point is 00:27:30 My goal is to try to make sure that we improve as the season goes along. In my history in this league, those are the teams that end up, you know, being in a good spot at the end of the year is that you try to improve. And, you know, hopefully we've been able to do that and we can continue to do that. When you said yesterday that you could. You know, I think that Josh getting out there and, you know, coming back off a high certainly helped his length.
Starting point is 00:27:54 And, you know, Jeffrey's ability to do some things and the guys, you know. Again, we just try to make sure that everybody's going hard and not taking the play off and competing. And now I hope that we expect to block one every week. You know, I think that every phase, I think, whether it's offense, defense, you know, players need to be prepared. If you're comfortable that they, you know, know what to do and are given techniques to help them do their job,
Starting point is 00:28:23 they have to go out and perform. That's what it is. When I missed a tackle, I never looked over at the coach and was like, that's terrible coaching because I was taught the proper leverage or the technique or taught to stay on my feet or taught how to break the stiff arm down. So there were certainly instances in the game yesterday where I thought the players were prepared and that they executed. And I think that in this game, we knew, I think, a huge turn of events was our ability to stop them when they went fast on third and one. And Kenny was very
Starting point is 00:29:02 well prepared by the staff, but Kenny also executed it and they tried to you know pick him and go to the flat and man coverage on third and one and you know he's standing right there and he really runs the route for the guy because he knew what was coming and then on fourth and one you know they go for it and they're not able to you know they they jump instead of us jumping and then on fourth and one we we go fast and score a touchdown. So we knew coming in that that was something that they had done on film and they had done a very good job of it, of converting those third and one and two and fourth and one plays where they're going fast
Starting point is 00:29:35 and catching the defense off guard.
