Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Tyjae Spears TRADE CANDIDATE for Tennessee Titans as Future of Running Back Room is in Flux
Episode Date: May 5, 2026The Tennessee Titans need as many weapons on offense as they can get, but they also need to think about the future and what makes sense going forward. That is why Tyjae Spears could be on the trade bl...ock. Spears is talented, but has never been consistent enough. With the Titans having Tony Pollard and drafting Nick Singleton, Spears could be the odd man out and with his electric ability, could generate some trade interest around the NFL. Tajay Spears should be on the trade block for the Tennessee Titans,
and I'll tell you why on today's edition of Locked on Titans.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast,
part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland Titans fans on today's show.
We're going to talk about the future of the Titans running back position,
and I'll tell you why both the future and the present show us that Tage Spears could be traded.
Now, let me just say this.
I like Tadier Spears.
I've always been a fan of Tadier Spears.
He's an electric playmaker.
He's great with the ball in his hands.
He's made some big-time plays for the Titans.
I think he's a good person too.
Like he's a fun player to root for.
Always enjoyed having Tagee on the team.
But here is the reality.
Tadier Spears is on the last year.
of his contract.
Tage Spears has never lived up to the player
that I think his talent says that he can be.
Through his first three years in the NFL,
he has just never been able to put it all together
and be that electric playmaker
that I thought that he could be coming out of college.
He's just never put it all together.
I mean, the most yards that he's ever had in a season
was his rookie year.
His rookie year.
and it's been downhill.
He had 838 yards his rookie season,
536, 547 after that.
He's just never going to be the guy that we want him to be.
12 games played in 2024, 13 games played in 2025.
It's unfortunate, but he's just a dude that can't stay consistent,
can't stay healthy, got a concussion,
ankle, soft tissue,
so many different things that he's had to deal with.
He is not in the future of this football.
This will be Taji Spears's last.
year with the Tennessee Titans.
Last year of his contract,
they're not going to re-sign him.
There's no reason to re-sign a Tajay Spears
when you can go into the draft.
Like, I would rather take Nick Singleton
in the fifth round again next year,
whoever the Nick Singleton of next year's draft is.
I would rather do that than bring back Taj Spears.
It just doesn't make sense to pay any kind.
I think Tajay Spears is going to get close
to a veteran minimum contract next year.
Like, he's just unreliable.
It's unfortunate, but that's the reality.
And if that's the case, and then you add in,
you still have Tony Pollard, who is clearly the lead running back.
Now you've brought in Nick Singleton,
who is a bigger back, who's faster than Tad J Spears.
He's not quicker than Tadier Spears,
but he's faster than Tadier Spears.
He's bigger than Tadier Spears.
And if you look at Brian Dables's running backs,
If you look at what Brian Dable wants from the running back position,
it's not these little shifty guys like Tadier Spears.
That's not typically what he's looking for.
He wants guys who have bigger bodies
so that they can run his offense with the gap runs,
with the pullers, and getting downhill north and south.
That's just not who Tadier is.
It's not.
So look, whether it be the contract,
whether it be having Tony Pollard, Nick Singleton,
and Michael Carter as well,
who we haven't talked a lot about
but was a favorite of Robert Salas
when he was with the Jets, Michael Carter,
are the Titans going to keep four running backs?
Is there enough carries and enough touches
and enough usage to justify having
Tony Pollard, Nick Singleton,
Tajay Spears, Michael Carter are all on the team?
I think you could clearly
and easily
make the argument
that a trade
where you send Tosh
Stier Spears out for a guard, a draft pick next year in the mid-round.
Probably fifth or sixth round pick.
I would be pleasantly surprised if the Titans were able to get more than that
out of Tage Spears.
But at the end of the day,
I would much rather have Tony Pollard, Nick Singleton, Michael Carter,
and then a draft pick or a starting guard,
for example, then have Taday Spears in that room.
They just have enough at running back right now
where I think they can be fine without Tadier Spears.
And with him being on the last year of his contract,
being unreliable from a health perspective,
declining every year of his career in production.
There's just no way that you can justify to me
that if they get a good trade offer for Tadier Spears,
that they shouldn't take it.
Now, will they get a good trade?
trade offer. Let's be honest here.
Why would an NFL team trade for a running back?
You know, the same reason that I just told you
that the Titans should not give Tajay Spears a contract extension
and should instead just draft a running back in the mid-round's again next year,
NFL teams are going to think about that and say, why don't we do that?
Why would we trade for Tajay Spears?
We'll just draft another running back.
But here's the thing.
The draft doesn't happen until after the season.
and if you feel like you need a running back right now.
And listen, we can talk about the downsides of Tadier Spears all we want.
But Tadier Spears is still an electric player.
Good with the ball on his hands.
Can make things happen.
Never lived up to the third round draft pick that was used on him here.
But that's not someone else's problem where he got drafted.
That's, they're paying a fifth or a sixth round pick for Tage Spears, not a third.
So I think from that perspective,
Tajay Spears is good enough
where he could have some trade value to a team
this season who wants to compete right now
and needs running back help.
But he's also not good enough
for the Titans to be worried about trading him.
And hey, we can't trade Tajay Spears, we need him.
No, Nick Singleton is good out of the backfield.
He's a bigger body who fits better in Brian Dable's system.
Michael Carter can be your number three.
You still have Cal L Mullings who can be a special team's number four.
There are options.
So Spears is good enough where he might be able to get the Titans a little something in return,
but he's not good enough where the Titans should feel hesitant about doing it.
Now, that's the present situation.
Again, I think it's the present and the future that makes Tage Spears expendable for the Tennessee Titans.

And let's continue and cap off today's bonus edition
of the Locked on Titans podcast again.
We're looking at a potential trade for Tagee Spears.
I think it could make a ton of sense
with what the Titans have in the running back room.
Tadier Spears is individual situation.
But again, it's about the future for the Titans as well.
Now, before we dive into that,

With that being said, though, again, I think that Nick Singleton
is the only running back on the team right now that is part of the future at running back.
Now, will Nick Singleton be the lead back for the time?
Titans going forward. Will he be the secondary back
for the Titans going forward? Will it be a
50-50 1A 1B situation with another running back next year?
Maybe that is the case. But either way, I know that
Nick Singleton is a part of the future at the running back position
for the Titans and I also know that Taj Spears is not.
So Tony Pollard, likely not a part of the future.
But let's just be honest here.
Tony Pollard is a better player than Tadge Spears.
Tony Pollard is an actual, like, feature running back
that the Titans can give, you know, 200 carries to.
Like, Tony Pollard and Tadge Spears are totally different.
And when you look at Nick Singleton's skill set,
maybe not the best IQ as a runner.
Maybe not the best at setting up his blocks,
running with patience, running with tempo.
All that stuff needs to be developed and needs to be coach.
But what he is good at, good out of the backfield, catch the ball,
will lay the hit on somebody in pass protection.
He's not perfect there, but he's good enough.
And again, as I mentioned earlier, he's a bigger body back.
And I think Tony Pollard and Nick Singleton together
with Michael Carter as a third option who's going to play special teams
and be a good teammate, know the offense and all that stuff,
I think that is plenty.
And if Taj Spears isn't a part of the future, which I think that he isn't,
and Nick Singleton is, well, wouldn't it make sense?
to prioritize getting Nick Singleton opportunities over Tage Spears going forward.
Spears may be a little bit of a better player right now, but how much better?
So it's not just about the present situation for the Titans where they have Pollard,
Singleton, Carter, and can withstand losing Tage Spears to get an asset back,
but it's also about getting Nick Singleton ready to be a much more important piece
going forward.
And whether Nick Singleton
replaces the Tony Pollard role
or whether he just replaces
the Taj Spears role
probably best to start that process
right now.
Now, I'll say this.
This time of year,
trades are not super likely.
Coaches are telling themselves
our rookies, our young players
are going to step up.
Oh, we don't need to trade
a pick for a running back right now.
We can wait for cuts
to happen. So maybe
Atage Spears'
trade doesn't actually
happen until
near the trade deadline
into the season. And if Nick Singleton
maybe the Titans want to get a look
at Nick Singleton and confirm that
he's good enough to move off of
Taj Spears before they do it. Because
this year is important. The Titans need to win.
They need good production. They need good
running backs, all that.
So maybe
a Taj Spears trade makes more
since during the season, closer to the trade deadline.
When the Titans get a look at Singleton,
maybe some running backs get hurt in the NFL,
maybe some young guys disappoint, blah, blah.
That's always going to force teams to make more moves that right now,
hope springs eternal.
You guys think the Titans are a playoff team.
Every team around the NFL thinks their young guys are going to be stars,
blah, blah, this and that.
This is when optimism is at its highest,
which means that making a trade for somebody else
and using drop picks,
likelihood probably at its lowest.
But I'm just telling you to keep your eye on Tage Spears,
whether it's during training camp,
whether it's preseason, whether into the season,
I think it would make a ton of sense
for the Titans to trade Tagee
and get something back
before he inevitably leaves in free agency.
And again, I don't think that Tadier Spears
is a part of this team going forward.
But with that being said,
let me know how you would feel
about a Tage Spears trade down below
and what it would take for you to trade Taj Spears,
what you would need to get back.
For me, again, it's a fifth or a sixth round pick.
Would do it just fine.
But with that being said,
that's going to do it for today's bonus edition.
As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland,
and this was Locked on Titans.
