Hey folks, Aaron here.
Welcome back to another edition of Deeper Lour,
a bonus episode designed to serve as a topical guide
to the most recent episode of lore.
Have you ever wondered where you can find more episodes
on a specific topic that you just heard about?
Did this particular type of folklore get you interested
in keeping the vibe going?
Or maybe the newest episode of lore
made you want to go deeper into a particular topic.
So let's get started with that, shall we?
This week, we actually ran a rerun of one of our first stories,
Episode 12, Half-Hanged.
And for those who have never actually heard it yet,
it's a powerful tale of witchcraft accusations in early New England,
and quite possibly one of my favorite episodes ever.
And it's worth revisiting this theme and digging a little deeper
to see what other episodes will pair nicely with it.
To that end, let's talk witch trials.
Oddly, this has been a hot topic among listeners for many, many years.
Every time I publish a new witch-trial episode,
I get comments that ask,
world we need yet another story of people accused of witchcraft. Some listeners, I'm sorry to say,
have told me that they are sick of them. But here's the thing. Lore is, at its heart,
a show that tries to explore stories from history that demonstrate the intersection of real-world
events and superstitious folk beliefs, and witch trials fall into that sweet spot perfectly.
They all took place in a time when events like that were heavily documented, so we have a lot
of records of them, and there were sadly a ton of them. And on top of all of that, they always
have something to teach us about human nature and community life, which makes them valuable
stories to revisit and hear about. So naturally, episode 12 was not the last time we discussed
which trials on lore. Here are three older episodes that should pair up nicely with this week's
classic rerun. First up, episode 25, The Cave. This one is another fan favorites covering an unusual
story about male witches on the island of Chilaue off the coast of Chile. It has some pretty
unique elements and offers a fresh perspective on the idea of witches in general. So do check it out.
Next, download episode 41, Hole in the Wall. This one is another classic, and it unpacks a
key Scottish witch trial event that was centered around a young woman who claimed to be attacked
by a local witch. The truth, though, was a lot stranger, and definitely worth revisiting. And finally,
there's episode 56 going viral. This episode covers the terrifying events that took place on a farm in
Tennessee in 1817. What happened has gone down in American history as one of the most popular
and frightening American legends, a story often referred to as the Bell Witch. So be sure to
give this one a fresh listen. And there you go. Follow up this week's brand new episode with a trip
into the past. Episodes 25, 41, and 56 are waiting for
you in this podcast feed. You can just scroll through your app to find them, or you can tap
on their direct links in the description for this episode. And until next time, folks, stay spooky.
